Newsline: over 200 new jobs at a big pharmaceutical company. The pop-up | :00:31. | :00:37.
prison ready for use if G8 protests turn violent. | :00:37. | :00:41.
Another critical report into performance at the Northern health | :00:41. | :00:42.
trust. Graeme McDowell tells us how the | :00:42. | :00:45.
rain in Philadelphia could help him regain the US Open title. | :00:45. | :00:49.
And the rain is back with a very big splash tonight but there is some dry | :00:49. | :00:55.
weather to be had tomorrow. I'll be back shortly with the full forecast. | :00:55. | :00:58.
One of Northern Ireland's top companies has announced the creation | :00:58. | :01:02.
of 229 jobs. Almac, the pharmaceuticals manufacturer, is | :01:02. | :01:07.
based in Craigavon. It's spending 14 million on two big expansion | :01:07. | :01:17.
:01:17. | :01:24. | ||
projects. Almac is a local success story, a | :01:24. | :01:30.
kind of pinup poster for the northern island economy. All the | :01:30. | :01:38.
right boxes ticked. It gives me great pleasure, the fact it is a | :01:38. | :01:45.
local company, but also a company exporting globally. This is a very | :01:45. | :01:49.
good news story. It is a mixture of jobs, for graduates and | :01:49. | :01:57.
non-graduates. This is part of the business which is expanding, | :01:57. | :02:03.
production of a laxative drug is being stepped up. Almac has 600 | :02:03. | :02:10.
planned companies. The vast majority of our sales are outside the UK. | :02:10. | :02:15.
really see our main market is being Europe, the US and the rest of the | :02:15. | :02:20.
world. Other jobs included are in a newly opened product development | :02:20. | :02:25.
facility. One third of these jobs are in fact in place. They are part | :02:25. | :02:31.
of a 2000 strong workforce here. The company also has a facility in the | :02:31. | :02:37.
United States which employs 1000. Despite Almac making a 40 million | :02:37. | :02:44.
profit last year, invest is helping this expansion. Why does a company | :02:44. | :02:52.
of this profile needs help? Because we make things happen. In terms of | :02:52. | :02:56.
projects and the scale of the project. Sometimes, it is in terms | :02:56. | :03:00.
of how quickly it can be implemented. The amount of money we | :03:00. | :03:05.
need to put in here was needed to make this project happen. There has | :03:05. | :03:12.
been a steady stream of job announcements in late. The economy | :03:12. | :03:17.
has seen slight growth but is still struggling outside the gates of | :03:17. | :03:19.
Almac. Four companies, whose names were | :03:19. | :03:22.
linked to an overpayment scandal in Housing Executive contracts, have | :03:22. | :03:26.
rejected any wrongdoing. The Social Development Minister Nelson | :03:27. | :03:34.
McCausland said some 18 million had been overpaid to them. But in a | :03:34. | :03:37.
joint statement, the companies say they are "upset and dismayed by the | :03:37. | :03:44.
allegations" and will mount a challenge. They describe them as | :03:44. | :03:50.
"outrageous" and very damaging to their reputation and business. | :03:50. | :03:53.
The G8 summit in County Fermanagh may be less than a week away but | :03:53. | :03:58.
protests have already begun in London. More than 30 people have | :03:58. | :04:00.
been arrested for a range of offences, including violent | :04:00. | :04:05.
disorder. The trouble began after the police surrounded a building in | :04:05. | :04:08.
Soho where a group called Stop G8 were holding what they called a | :04:08. | :04:14.
Carnival Against Capitalism. Our home affairs correspondent Vincent | :04:14. | :04:17.
Kearney has been looking at the preparations to deal with any | :04:17. | :04:22.
violent protests here. In place will be a pop-up prison, special courts | :04:22. | :04:28.
and a fleet of prison vans brought over from England. All of that means | :04:28. | :04:34.
the police can deal with up to 260 arrests a day if needed. BBC | :04:34. | :04:36.
Newsline was given exclusive access to a temporary custody centre in | :04:36. | :04:46.
:04:46. | :04:46. | ||
Omagh. Prepared for the worst: Six | :04:46. | :04:51.
temporary cell blocks have been built on the side of a former Army | :04:51. | :05:00.
base. Each can hold 16. This is where anyone arrested will be | :05:00. | :05:05.
brought. After having their details taken and being questioned and | :05:05. | :05:09.
fingerprinted, suspects will be taken to one of the cells. They will | :05:09. | :05:14.
be held there by staff from the Public prosecution service and | :05:14. | :05:18.
police officers to get them into court as quickly as possible. What | :05:18. | :05:24.
this will enable us to do is have a detained person process, interviewed | :05:24. | :05:28.
if required, charged and peer before the court in a very short period of | :05:28. | :05:35.
time. There is capacity to cope with many more arrests if there is any | :05:35. | :05:41.
serious trouble. There are also 50 cells at this police station in | :05:41. | :05:47.
Belfast, but the PSI hopes they will not be needed. In a worst-case | :05:47. | :05:54.
scenario, we could processed up to 260 detained persons. But that is | :05:54. | :06:02.
the worst-case scenario and those plans can scaled back. 16 judges are | :06:02. | :06:09.
on stand-by to preside over special court sittings. The prison service | :06:09. | :06:14.
is also prepared for the worst. A fleet of prison vans and additional | :06:14. | :06:18.
officers have been brought in from England and hundreds of cells have | :06:18. | :06:23.
been set aside to hold protesters charged with criminal offences. The | :06:23. | :06:29.
vans will be based here and then deployed if needed to take arrested | :06:29. | :06:33.
protesters from custody centres to court and then from court to prison | :06:33. | :06:37.
if they are remanded in custody while awaiting trial. Local trade | :06:37. | :06:46.
unions unveiled Art of their G8 plans. Afterwards, the police were | :06:46. | :06:51.
accused of overstating the threat of violence to put people of taking | :06:51. | :06:59.
part in peaceful protests. One might be forgiven to think that we are | :06:59. | :07:07.
being reduced. Non-violent protests is essential. The PS and I says it | :07:07. | :07:11.
respects the right to peaceful protest and will facilitate those | :07:11. | :07:15.
who wish to take part but it says resources and plans are in place to | :07:15. | :07:17.
deal with anyone who turns to violence. | :07:17. | :07:21.
The Northern Health Trust is no stranger to bad news. Covering an | :07:21. | :07:24.
area from Antrim to Coleraine and with major hospitals in each | :07:24. | :07:29.
location, it's been the subject of much criticism. Today there was more | :07:29. | :07:34.
in the shape of yet another review. It says the Trust's in a poor | :07:34. | :07:39.
position and requires intensive support to improve. The review team, | :07:39. | :07:43.
brought in from England last year, has made several recommendations. | :07:43. | :07:45.
Our health correspondent Marie-Louise Connolly can tell us | :07:45. | :07:55.
:07:55. | :07:55. | ||
more. Yet another review. What's different about this one? It feels | :07:55. | :08:00.
like Groundhog Day. There have been several reviews into this | :08:00. | :08:09.
beleaguered trust. Following that, we had the chairman being sacked by | :08:09. | :08:14.
the Health Minister before Christmas, and later, the chief | :08:14. | :08:19.
executive stepped aside. It has been turmoil. Why should this one make | :08:19. | :08:25.
any sort of difference? Well, it's not being rushed like the others. | :08:25. | :08:30.
Instead of making changes very quickly, they are suggesting they go | :08:30. | :08:36.
in in stages. It will happen in three stages, firstly in Antrim, the | :08:36. | :08:41.
causeway and out in the community. Instead of running a marathon, those | :08:41. | :08:46.
who have been charged with leading this changed will be running more | :08:46. | :08:53.
like five and ten K runs, doing it very short term because they cannot | :08:53. | :08:58.
get this one wrong. To directors have been so Condit to lead that. | :08:58. | :09:04.
Some say that as a poisoned chalice. At least with Mary, the woman | :09:04. | :09:09.
charged with leading this changed, her chalice will always be half | :09:09. | :09:14.
full. She is a very positive person. This is what this trust needs at the | :09:14. | :09:19.
moment. That will make a difference. She isn't new to the trust, | :09:19. | :09:24.
however. She has been their 18 months so is very familiar with what | :09:24. | :09:28.
needs to be done and she will not be afforded the time to make any | :09:28. | :09:38.
:09:38. | :09:40. | ||
mistakes. She said, among her priorities, is to support staff. | :09:40. | :09:43.
focus is on the future, on everybody in this organisation working in the | :09:43. | :09:46.
interests of patient care. You mattered to patients and we care | :09:46. | :09:52.
about you and we will help you do your job even better than before. | :09:52. | :09:57.
She described herself as an old-fashioned girl. Staff will be | :09:57. | :10:00.
wanting to see some old-fashioned practices such as empowering nurses | :10:00. | :10:03.
back on the wards. You're watching BBC Newsline. Still | :10:03. | :10:06.
to come on the programme: We hear about a claim that the Government | :10:06. | :10:13.
tried to bury the truth about the real dangers of rubber bullets. | :10:13. | :10:16.
Two Belfast brothers, who got a heavily-reduced prison sentence for | :10:16. | :10:19.
agreeing to give evidence in a UVF murder trial, will NOT be sent back | :10:19. | :10:26.
to jail, even though they lied in court. No action will be taken | :10:26. | :10:30.
against Robert and Ian Stewart by the Public Prosecution Service. But | :10:30. | :10:32.
another so-called loyalist "supergrass" Neil Hyde is being sent | :10:32. | :10:42.
:10:42. | :10:45. | ||
back to court. They got out of jail early after | :10:45. | :10:49.
promising to tell the truth, but even though Robert and Ian Stewart | :10:49. | :10:54.
lied in court, they would be going back to prison. The brothers were | :10:54. | :10:59.
involved in the UVF killing of Tommy English 13 years ago. The brothers | :10:59. | :11:03.
later handed themselves into the police and offered to give evidence | :11:04. | :11:09.
against nine other men they said were involved. In return, Robert | :11:09. | :11:14.
Stewart and his brother served only three years of a 22 year sentence. | :11:15. | :11:19.
The so-called supergrass trial more than 11 million, but all the men | :11:19. | :11:25.
accused of murder were found not guilty. When the Public prosecution | :11:25. | :11:29.
service examined the case, they found seven different occasions on | :11:29. | :11:33.
which the brothers lied, but today, they announced the lies were not | :11:33. | :11:38.
serious enough to send them back to court. The relevance of the lies in | :11:38. | :11:42.
the context of the case as a whole, particularly because they did not | :11:42. | :11:46.
implicate anybody in crime, would not have led to the conviction of | :11:46. | :11:51.
any of the accused in the trial. that reason, I find that very | :11:52. | :12:01.
:12:02. | :12:10. | ||
persuasive. The trial which the brothers gave evidence lasted three | :12:10. | :12:12.
months. It took the Public prosecution service more than a year | :12:12. | :12:15.
to decide whether to take any action against them. The PPS also announced | :12:15. | :12:17.
their decision on a different case, that of another so-called | :12:17. | :12:19.
supergrass. He admitted his part in the killing of a Sunday world | :12:19. | :12:22.
reporter and agreed to give information about others in return | :12:22. | :12:27.
for a reduced sentence. But now the authorities are sending him back to | :12:27. | :12:31.
court. After his sentencing hearing, material was made available | :12:31. | :12:36.
to us which has led us to the belief that he was not telling us the full | :12:36. | :12:41.
truth. I need to be very careful what I say here because this is now | :12:41. | :12:46.
the subject of a court process. Hyde is expected back in court later this | :12:46. | :12:54.
year. Last summer, a new parading flashpoint emerged at a Catholic | :12:54. | :12:58.
Church in Belfast. With just over a month to go until the Twelfth, the | :12:58. | :13:00.
Orange Order has published a plan aimed at easing tensions around | :13:00. | :13:04.
parades which pass St Patrick's Church in Donegall Street. | :13:04. | :13:07.
Nationalists say the next step must be dialogue with residents. Chris | :13:07. | :13:17.
:13:17. | :13:19. | ||
Page reports. August last year and please try to deal with Northern | :13:19. | :13:26.
Ireland's biggest headache dispute. Seven police officers were heart" | :13:26. | :13:33.
she is whether nationalist residents after the date went through. -- | :13:33. | :13:42.
after the parade went through. In July as Sinn Fein member filmed the | :13:42. | :13:51.
band circling outside the church, playing a circadian song. The Orange | :13:51. | :13:58.
order has now made a move which it says is a sign of goodwill. We are | :13:58. | :14:03.
trying to break out of the recrimination of broken | :14:04. | :14:08.
determination and that will get us over to the next key and the all | :14:08. | :14:13.
thing repeats itself. We are trying to delete that cycle and get some | :14:13. | :14:22.
stability. The Orange order has given some commitments. It says no | :14:22. | :14:31.
parades. Outside and Patrick's church. The bands will play him is | :14:31. | :14:40.
only and supporters will walk on the other side of the street. Sinn Fein | :14:40. | :14:45.
has given this reaction. There may be good points in this. Appealing | :14:45. | :14:50.
Fortran is a good point but talking to local groups is what will sort | :14:50. | :14:56.
this out. And this representative group of local nationalists say it | :14:56. | :15:04.
is up to the loyal orders to convince them not to view the league | :15:04. | :15:11.
is as sick TV in. All sides say they are hopeful this summer can be | :15:11. | :15:15.
peaceful and that violence is not inevitable. Next there's been what | :15:15. | :15:18.
is being seen as a major breakthrough in the ambitious plan | :15:18. | :15:22.
to create a shared school campus in Omagh at a former army barracks. Our | :15:22. | :15:32.
education correspondent Maggie Taggart has more on this. Unexpected | :15:32. | :15:40.
news today. Yes because this school we are talking about has always set | :15:41. | :15:46.
its mind against going to this. It was so incensed at not being given a | :15:46. | :15:52.
new 50 million school that it took them to court for a judicial review | :15:52. | :15:58.
and the judge voted in favour. Then it says it will be actively | :15:58. | :16:06.
participating in plans and hopefully leading the plans. Why the change? | :16:06. | :16:10.
He would rather have a school. seems there is no upper show in | :16:10. | :16:16.
town. There have been talks with the trustees, board of governors and | :16:16. | :16:21.
Department of education and there have been assurances on retaining | :16:21. | :16:25.
its own ethos. It also says the changes in education planning might | :16:25. | :16:31.
mean that the original site is not big enough. It has also requested a | :16:31. | :16:38.
payback of 1 million to do remedial works, health and safety linked, on | :16:38. | :16:46.
its own school in the meantime. important is its inclusion in this | :16:46. | :16:56.
shared plan? It is essential. It is one of six and it has been healed as | :16:56. | :17:03.
a milestone. The government say they should be no problem with that and | :17:03. | :17:13.
the first stage is due to be in place by March 2013. Thank you for | :17:13. | :17:16.
that update. Still to come before seven: We check out familiar weather | :17:16. | :17:22.
for our golfers preparing for the US Open in Pennsylvannia. A human | :17:23. | :17:25.
rights campaigner, blinded by a rubber bullet during the Troubles, | :17:25. | :17:28.
says he believes the Government tried to bury the truth about the | :17:28. | :17:33.
potential dangers of the weapon. The claim came after the Pat Finucane | :17:33. | :17:38.
Centre unearthed documents. Richard Moore from Londonderry was struck by | :17:38. | :17:42.
a rubber bullet while going home from primary school. The Ministry of | :17:42. | :17:45.
Defence said it regretted his injuries and that lessons had been | :17:45. | :17:55.
:17:55. | :18:14. | ||
learned. Keiron Tourish reports. Apologies, it seems as if we have | :18:14. | :18:19.
lost the sound on that report. We will try to get it later in the | :18:19. | :18:24.
programme. The weather in just a few minutes but before that we have | :18:24. | :18:29.
sport and it's not just here that our weather has taken a turn for the | :18:29. | :18:39.
:18:39. | :18:41. | ||
worst. Also in the United States. Our reporter is you to explain. -- | :18:41. | :18:47.
our reporter is here to explain. Torrential rainfall has disrupted | :18:47. | :18:50.
preparations for golf's US Open which starts on Thursday. The Merion | :18:50. | :18:54.
Golf Club, west of Philadelphia has had three inches of rain on what was | :18:54. | :18:57.
supposed to be a practice day. But the weather hasn't put off one | :18:57. | :19:05.
Northern Ireland golfer as Stephen Watson reports. Record brain in | :19:05. | :19:10.
Philadelphia produced a washout on day one. There were many unwelcome | :19:10. | :19:14.
water features flowing down the middle of the manicured fairways. | :19:14. | :19:21.
But leaving the elements was this man, the Portrush golf is no | :19:21. | :19:30.
stranger to bad weather and he was the last golfer out on the course. | :19:30. | :19:36.
Mother nature is not really Kuopio and right now. You can see behind me | :19:36. | :19:40.
the flooding and how wet the golf course is going to be. Logistically | :19:40. | :19:47.
getting there is around and on and off the golf course is why the | :19:47. | :19:52.
practice round last Wednesday is worth its weight in gold. They will | :19:52. | :19:55.
be running around trying to get a look at this golf course now which | :19:55. | :20:00.
is going to be saturated. Thankfully I am able to bank that practice | :20:01. | :20:08.
round. He might be tiptoeing through the mud but he arrives in a rich | :20:08. | :20:16.
bean of form. To tournament wins this season and three in the last | :20:16. | :20:22.
six months makes him one of the favourites to land the title this | :20:22. | :20:32.
:20:32. | :20:32. | ||
week. Yes the season has gone nicely and I am playing well. My US open | :20:32. | :20:37.
form has been solid the last couple of years but did at 150 guys out | :20:37. | :20:42.
here trying to do the same thing. When the gun goes off I will be as | :20:42. | :20:48.
ready as any of them but we will do our best. Organisers are working | :20:49. | :20:57.
hard to make sure this course is ready and thankfully the walk up to | :20:57. | :21:06.
sunshine today. With Roni Mackle Roy's victory in 2011, expectations | :21:06. | :21:12.
are high for some more Northern Ireland major success. -- broadly | :21:12. | :21:21.
Mackle Roy. Maureen is forecast for tomorrow afternoon. So we will see. | :21:21. | :21:25.
With 11 days to go before the first test against Australia, the British | :21:25. | :21:28.
and Irish Lions continued their tour with a warm-up game against a | :21:28. | :21:30.
combined country VX. The match was high-scoring. Thomas Kane was | :21:30. | :21:39.
keeping count. This had been expected to be a last glimpse of | :21:39. | :21:44.
some test starters before the showdown with the Wallabies. They | :21:44. | :21:51.
seemed to show little mercy against their opponents. The two lists | :21:51. | :21:55.
seemed to manage almost one point para minute during the first half. | :21:55. | :21:59.
The captain of the day showed glimpses of billions as he played | :21:59. | :22:04.
the full 80 minutes and weighed in with a try of his own. While their | :22:04. | :22:10.
opponents battle briefly the class between the sides was obvious as the | :22:10. | :22:18.
scoreboard continued to take over. Driscoll played a big part in the | :22:18. | :22:24.
final try, the 10th of the match for the Lions. He is said to be wrapped | :22:24. | :22:29.
in cotton wool before Warren Gatland's side take on Australia. | :22:29. | :22:35.
Their final warmup game is on Tuesday. Matt McGovern and Ryan | :22:35. | :22:38.
Seaton, the Irish sailing pair we featured recently here on BBC | :22:38. | :22:42.
Newsline, have had a brilliant day in Weymouth. On the Olympic course | :22:42. | :22:46.
in the 49er class, they were placed second, first, second and third in | :22:46. | :22:52.
today's four races. That moves them up to move up to second place | :22:52. | :22:57.
overall in the fleet at the Sail For Gold regatta. Racing finishes on | :22:57. | :23:04.
Thursday. Former Carrick Rangers boss Kenny Shiels has left the | :23:04. | :23:10.
Scottish side Kilmarnock by mutual consent. He was dismissed as manager | :23:10. | :23:15.
after the club finished ninth in the SPL last season. A four-match ban | :23:15. | :23:17.
for outspoken media comments, two suspended, was also taken into | :23:17. | :23:27.
:23:27. | :23:30. | ||
consideration. Fans have gathered outside Rugby Park in protest. | :23:30. | :23:33.
Finally, the Belfast Giants made a big signing today. Evan Cheverie, | :23:33. | :23:36.
the Canadian forward who scored the penalty that won the play-off final | :23:36. | :23:41.
in 2010, is coming back to the Odyssey for next season. We have | :23:42. | :23:48.
just learned they'd is a new chief executive of Northern Ireland. It is | :23:48. | :23:53.
the first woman to read the agency for the development of sport in this | :23:53. | :24:01.
part of the world. Thank you for that. We saw the dreadful weather | :24:01. | :24:06.
they are having a head of the U.S. Open. Our weather has taken a turn | :24:06. | :24:11.
for the worst. We had all that lovely sunshine for the last week or | :24:11. | :24:15.
so and now we have got the rain, what is actually our usual summer | :24:15. | :24:23.
weather? Some people would say normal service has resumed! When I | :24:23. | :24:28.
was out at lunchtime today it was a different ban it, people had their | :24:28. | :24:34.
arms covered, some with green courts. Temperatures are about | :24:35. | :24:44.
:24:45. | :24:52. | ||
normal? -- some covered with green courts. -- raincoats. The rain that | :24:53. | :24:57.
has been affecting the US open is down to a tropical storm. We can | :24:57. | :25:02.
blame the Atlantic on what is coming our way through the rest of this | :25:02. | :25:08.
week. I am going to start with the big Atlantic chart which shows | :25:08. | :25:12.
several areas of low pressure coming out of the United States heading | :25:12. | :25:18.
along the jet stream and running up towards Ireland. We have been | :25:18. | :25:24.
developing this afternoon which is coming our way through this evening. | :25:24. | :25:28.
Heading out tonight, be prepared for some very wet weather, some sudden | :25:28. | :25:33.
worst of rain and wind which could be blustery in places towards | :25:33. | :25:40.
midnight. It will dry up by the early hours. Just a few drips of | :25:40. | :25:45.
rain around the coast. Some feelings guys moving into the west by the end | :25:45. | :25:48.
of the night and some brightness around tomorrow morning with a few | :25:48. | :25:53.
bright spells out the second half of the day will become increasingly wet | :25:54. | :25:58.
from the south. If you are doing something outside tomorrow to attend | :25:58. | :26:03.
the morning. There will be some sunshine around. It looks like we | :26:03. | :26:13.
:26:13. | :26:14. | ||
will have a north-west /Southeast split during the afternoon. Up to | :26:14. | :26:19.
the North there will be sunshine until well into the afternoon but | :26:19. | :26:29.
:26:29. | :26:34. | ||
much cloudier skies towards Down and Ahmad. -- County Armagh. As we moved | :26:35. | :26:39.
into Thursday a cloudy and damp start with the overnight rain still | :26:39. | :26:45.
hanging around. It will brighten up with some sunshine in the afternoon. | :26:45. | :26:49.
It will be nice to feel from June sunshine again in our faces but | :26:49. | :26:56.
temperatures will be cooler. It is a very unsettled picture I'm afraid | :26:56. | :27:00.
through the rest of the week. Some sunshine and some dry weather on | :27:00. | :27:10.
:27:10. | :27:11. |
