elderly residents of a care home in Sussex. And the police are | :00:00. | :00:00.
protecting moderate British Muslims after they were targeted in a video | :00:00. | :00:00.
by Islamist extremists. That's all from the BBC News at Six. So it's | :00:00. | :00:00.
goodbye from me, and on BBC One, we can now | :00:07. | :00:22.
Good evening and welcome to BBC Newsline. The headlines... After the | :00:23. | :00:34.
speech in the First Minister praising the GAA, a leading pundit | :00:35. | :00:38.
says it is no one else's has missed if clubs or tournaments are named | :00:39. | :00:44.
after republican paramilitaries. Hundreds of children schools because | :00:45. | :00:49.
of bomb alerts in Lurgan and Hollywood. | :00:50. | :00:52.
A new initiative to combat drugs in prison. We go behind bars. | :00:53. | :00:58.
but all club that never was. but all club that never was. | :00:59. | :01:02.
Ahead of tomorrow night's big boxing bill in Belfast one of the biggest | :01:03. | :01:06.
names in the sport - Ricky Hatton - joins me live in the studio. | :01:07. | :01:09.
And it's been raining all day but will it clear in time for the | :01:10. | :01:13.
weekend? I'll tell you later in the programme. | :01:14. | :01:20.
The high profile GAA commentator Joe Brolly says it's no-one else's | :01:21. | :01:23.
business if GAA clubs or tournaments are named after republican | :01:24. | :01:25.
paramilitaries. Unionist politicians say naming clubs and tournaments | :01:26. | :01:27.
after paramilitaries glorifies terrorism. Joe Brolly's comments | :01:28. | :01:30.
come after the First Minister, Peter Robinson spoke at a gala dinner and | :01:31. | :01:33.
acknowledged the GAA for its efforts in building better community | :01:34. | :01:39.
relations. Here's our political reporter Stephen Walker. Peter | :01:40. | :01:49.
Robinson told his audience that the side of the Unionist First Minister | :01:50. | :01:53.
at such an occasion would have been unimaginable years ago. He began | :01:54. | :01:57.
with a joke about what he told the organiser or his terms when | :01:58. | :02:03.
attending the event. I did lay down a very firm condition. I insisted | :02:04. | :02:09.
that he would not ask Joe Brolly to do the post-speech analysis. And | :02:10. | :02:17.
true to form, GAA, Judge Joe Brolly has entered the fray. Unionists have | :02:18. | :02:23.
written me criticised the naming of training grounds and druggies after | :02:24. | :02:27.
republican prisoners. Joe Brolly is says he is proud that the hurling | :02:28. | :02:33.
club in his hometown of Dungiven was named after INLA hunger striker | :02:34. | :02:39.
Kevin Lynch. We are very proud of Kevin and we are proud that the club | :02:40. | :02:43.
is named after him. It is not the else's business. It is as simple as | :02:44. | :02:46.
that. People can either like it or lump it. That is the way society has | :02:47. | :02:54.
worked and communities work. When he was Sports Minister, Gregory | :02:55. | :02:58.
Campbell often criticised the GAA. Speaking before the comments were | :02:59. | :03:02.
made, he said the sporting body has changed it needed to do more. We | :03:03. | :03:08.
should not have games and trophies or grounds named after killers. That | :03:09. | :03:13.
should not be the case. It should be obvious to everyone that should not | :03:14. | :03:18.
happen. That should be the case on either side. I think the GAA has | :03:19. | :03:22.
made significant progress but it needs to take another step. Last | :03:23. | :03:28.
night, Peter Robinson praised the GAA product in its ban on security | :03:29. | :03:32.
force members and he said respect was the key to the future. We | :03:33. | :03:38.
acknowledge the role that the GAA has made and it is testament to the | :03:39. | :03:42.
progress we have all made that tonight we can knowledge the GAA's | :03:43. | :03:50.
rule in peace building. The speech was welcomed by the GAA which said | :03:51. | :03:55.
it was a significant step to improving community relations. How | :03:56. | :03:59.
should the speech be interpreted? It is easy to say something dressed up | :04:00. | :04:04.
in your dinner jacket in a well lit hall. It is in tiredly different to | :04:05. | :04:10.
come good on those ideas. The First Minister says the occasion shows how | :04:11. | :04:16.
much political life has changed. The TUV leader Jim Allister says his | :04:17. | :04:19.
speech was Polly and he says the remarks of Joe Brolly proved the GAA | :04:20. | :04:23.
was not interested in reaching out to the Unionist community. -- was | :04:24. | :04:32.
folly. Hundreds of children missed school | :04:33. | :04:35.
today because of bomb alerts in Lurgan and Holywood. A special needs | :04:36. | :04:38.
school was among three schools disrupted. Fightback in the last few | :04:39. | :04:45.
minutes, police have said the device in Lurgan was viable. Kevin Sharkey | :04:46. | :04:53.
reports. Street after street was closed around this part of Lurgan | :04:54. | :04:58.
today. There have inform Agro points of disruption, to schools and a | :04:59. | :05:02.
hospital, or out of use because of the squadron. 50 families have had | :05:03. | :05:11.
to move out. A closed of entry to the hospital was visible, and from | :05:12. | :05:16.
another position, part of the empty school. Over 100 special needs | :05:17. | :05:24.
children were sent home. Most children would be delighted with a | :05:25. | :05:28.
day off. Our pupils will be traumatised. You cannot explain to | :05:29. | :05:32.
these children who have their uniform on, are waiting for the boss | :05:33. | :05:34.
these children who have their to come, that the school will not | :05:35. | :05:37.
the open because someone has put upon there. Outside the school, | :05:38. | :05:45.
Look at yourself, look at what you Look at yourself, look at what you | :05:46. | :05:51.
have done. It is despicable. In Hollywood, in nursery school was | :05:52. | :05:54.
closed before an object found in a hitch was described as a hoax. Over | :05:55. | :05:58.
500 pupils have been forced to stay at home today in this area and in | :05:59. | :06:09.
Lurgan. Three visitors have been arrested | :06:10. | :06:12.
after trying to smuggle drugs into Maghaberry prison. The arrests are | :06:13. | :06:15.
part of a new initiative by the Prison Service and the police aimed | :06:16. | :06:19.
at reducing the amount of illegal drugs available behind bars. Our | :06:20. | :06:21.
Home Affairs Correspondent Vincent Kearney reports. High fences and | :06:22. | :06:28.
barbed wire are designed to keep people inside Maghaberry prison. But | :06:29. | :06:32.
they are failing to keep drugs out of. Despite clear warnings about the | :06:33. | :06:38.
consequences, the prison service and police have launched a joint | :06:39. | :06:41.
initiative aimed at tackling the drugs problem. A police officer will | :06:42. | :06:46.
be based at Maghaberry prison for a three-month period as part of a | :06:47. | :06:50.
programme to reduce the drugs available on the level of demand. | :06:51. | :06:55.
Since the initiative was launched two weeks ago, 11 prisoners have in | :06:56. | :06:59.
court in possession of drugs and files have been sent the Public | :07:00. | :07:03.
Prosecution Service. Last night, three visitors were arrested trying | :07:04. | :07:08.
to smuggle drugs into the prison. Specially trained dogs have been | :07:09. | :07:16.
used trying to detect drugs and he has -- a solicitor has asked judges | :07:17. | :07:22.
not to send his prison -- plans to prison because drugs are so easily | :07:23. | :07:28.
available. He wrote to the governor of Maghaberry gale on behalf of a | :07:29. | :07:30.
client who complained he did not want to be surrounded by people | :07:31. | :07:36.
openly abusing drugs. He would have been horrified and terrified by the | :07:37. | :07:40.
amount of drugs there, the fact that other inmates were clearly under the | :07:41. | :07:44.
influence of illegal substances and eventually, we munched to getting | :07:45. | :07:49.
moved. The problem of drugs in prison tier has been highlighted in | :07:50. | :07:54.
a series of inspection reports. Earlier this month, the chief | :07:55. | :07:59.
criminal Justice inspector told police of his first-hand experience | :08:00. | :08:05.
in sight -- had bank Young offender centre. I went into the cell and the | :08:06. | :08:14.
smell was quite strong. A young man was off his head. Police will search | :08:15. | :08:19.
sales, prisoners and prison officers if there is intelligence information | :08:20. | :08:23.
to indicate they may be trying to smuggle drugs. Anyone who attempts | :08:24. | :08:30.
to bring contraband into the prison, whether it's prisoners, | :08:31. | :08:34.
visitors or staff, will face the rigours that we impose. Anyone who | :08:35. | :08:42.
brings drugs into prison will be dealt with appropriately. The Prison | :08:43. | :08:47.
Service and police say this initiative may be extended if it is | :08:48. | :08:54.
successful. A letter a DUP minister sent to | :08:55. | :08:58.
Glentoran Football club, raising the possibility of ?10 million in | :08:59. | :09:01.
funding, has been described as misleading. The comments from a | :09:02. | :09:03.
senior civil servant are contained in documents obtained by the BBC. | :09:04. | :09:07.
Julian O'Neill has this exclusive report. Glentoran is one of local | :09:08. | :09:17.
football's biggest clubs but it also has big financial worries and its | :09:18. | :09:23.
home ground is one of the worst in the Irish league. Two years ago, | :09:24. | :09:28.
Peter Robinson helped rescue the club by introducing a mystery | :09:29. | :09:32.
donor. Now documents we have obtained under the Freedom of | :09:33. | :09:35.
Information Act show that around the same time, more financial help | :09:36. | :09:41.
appeared to be on its way. Mr Robinson again apparently playing a | :09:42. | :09:45.
role. He asked his then Sports Minister Nelson McCausland to write | :09:46. | :09:50.
to the club. In his letter to club chairman, he told Glentoran that the | :09:51. | :09:55.
Executive had agreed funding for local soccer as outlined in an IFA | :09:56. | :10:01.
proposal. That included plans for a ?10 million grant to Glentoran as | :10:02. | :10:07.
long as it made the business case. Mr McAusland said the money was | :10:08. | :10:11.
secure. Things were looking good for Glentoran on telly senior civil | :10:12. | :10:17.
servant rang the alarm bells. In a memo, the civil servant said the | :10:18. | :10:18.
letter was misleading in several memo, the civil servant said the | :10:19. | :10:24.
ways. Crucially he said this. I do not leave the Executive were | :10:25. | :10:28.
agreeing the specific allegation to Glentoran as they had not been asked | :10:29. | :10:37.
the question. When Caral Ni Chuilin took over, she was briefed. A senior | :10:38. | :10:44.
civil servant told her at the request of the First Minister Nelson | :10:45. | :10:48.
McCausland wrote to Terence Branagan confirming ?10 million funding had | :10:49. | :10:52.
been earmarked for Glentoran. The memo said Mr McAusland's assertions | :10:53. | :10:56.
may not be borne out so definitively by the Executive decision. After | :10:57. | :11:04.
meeting senior officials, Caral Ni Chuilin concluded that previous | :11:05. | :11:06.
commitments to funding could not be upheld. As it stands, the money is | :11:07. | :11:12.
not there for Glentoran but sources have told me that the Nel -- the | :11:13. | :11:16.
letter from Nelson McCausland offered a financial lifeline and | :11:17. | :11:21.
they had not expect the money, but the letter was of huge comfort. | :11:22. | :11:24.
Tonight it would seem that the money is as far away as ever. | :11:25. | :11:34.
A short time ago the DUP said Mr McCausland's letter was factual and | :11:35. | :11:36.
how people interpreted it is for them to explain. It said the | :11:37. | :11:40.
officials concerned were not present at the relevant Executive meeting or | :11:41. | :11:42.
during discussions between Ministers. | :11:43. | :11:51.
You are watching BBC Newsline. Still to come. Did you know Belfast is | :11:52. | :11:56.
officially a healthy city? We will ask what makes it so? | :11:57. | :12:06.
Up to 40 firefighters were needed to deal with a blaze in Belfast city | :12:07. | :12:09.
centre until late this afternoon. They were called to a shop in | :12:10. | :12:12.
Rosemary Street shortly after 5am this morning. The fire was spotted | :12:13. | :12:16.
by a passing police patrol. There were fears it could spread to the | :12:17. | :12:19.
adjoining buildings, including an old Masonic Hall. Nearby shop fronts | :12:20. | :12:22.
were left blackened by the thick smoke. It's not yet clear how the | :12:23. | :12:29.
blaze started. The Senior Coroner has warned both | :12:30. | :12:33.
the Chief Constable and the Justice Minister that he won't allow further | :12:34. | :12:36.
delays to the inquest into the death of Arlene Arkinson from Castlederg | :12:37. | :12:39.
who disappeared in 1994. The PSNI has yet to hand over all the | :12:40. | :12:43.
documents relevant to the case. The coroner, John Leckey has given them | :12:44. | :12:46.
until the end of the month to comply and advised the Chief Constable to | :12:47. | :12:50.
ask the Justice Minister for more resources if necessary. | :12:51. | :12:58.
The bloodstained clothes of an Armagh student brutally attacked on | :12:59. | :13:01.
a Chicago street have been shown in court, during the trial of the man | :13:02. | :13:05.
accused of the attack. Natasha McShane was left badly brain damaged | :13:06. | :13:08.
after she and her friend were robbed and beaten in the city in April | :13:09. | :13:11.
2010. From Chicago, Julie Kirby reports. A family member quietly | :13:12. | :13:21.
sobbed as the cream-coloured jacket of Natasha McShane was pulled out of | :13:22. | :13:25.
the brown paper bag. Photographs from the scene work she and her | :13:26. | :13:30.
friend were mugged and beaten were also presented in the County | :13:31. | :13:33.
criminal Court. They showed the jacket intertwined with than all of | :13:34. | :13:37.
college jumper and pools of blood on the ground. It was another emotional | :13:38. | :13:42.
day in the trial of 84-year-old Heriberto Viramontes who was accused | :13:43. | :13:45.
of attempted murder. He denies the murder. -- 24-year-old. A worker at | :13:46. | :13:56.
a petrol station testified that the defendant was trying to use the | :13:57. | :14:03.
credit card stolen from the women. Images were shown of him at the | :14:04. | :14:07.
petrol station. The man who served him admitted under questioning he | :14:08. | :14:11.
did not see any blood on the accused that morning. His lawyers maintained | :14:12. | :14:15.
he would have had blood on him if he had carried out the attack. The case | :14:16. | :14:22.
continues. There is plenty more to come. The | :14:23. | :14:27.
head of the big fight tomorrow night in Belfast, a boxing legend joins us | :14:28. | :14:36.
in the studio. What do you think makes a healthy | :14:37. | :14:40.
city? Is it cafes selling wholesome affordable food, play areas for | :14:41. | :14:43.
children or more cycle lanes? Next month, Belfast Healthy Cities is | :14:44. | :14:45.
hosting awards to acknowledge those projects which have made a | :14:46. | :14:48.
difference. Our Health Correspondent Marie Louise Connolly has been out | :14:49. | :14:52.
and about taking a look at what's been changing. Believe it or not, | :14:53. | :14:58.
this area on the Shankill Road in Belfast used to be an eyesore. It | :14:59. | :15:04.
was a derelict space, and some were no one wanted to work or live. But | :15:05. | :15:11.
now, it is transformed into a place for people can come to work and for | :15:12. | :15:16.
others can work and live and make plans for the future. It is | :15:17. | :15:21.
transforming areas like this that is part of the Belfast Healthy Cities | :15:22. | :15:27.
rebid. It can be challenging. Agencies have their own remit but we | :15:28. | :15:31.
tried to encourage them to look at the benefits and health benefits of | :15:32. | :15:36.
the work they are involved in. The fields of change have turned slowly | :15:37. | :15:40.
but steadily since Belfast was designated a healthy city by the | :15:41. | :15:45.
World Health Organisation 25 years ago. To mark that milestone, it is | :15:46. | :15:49.
looking for suggestions from groups that can change the city. It got us | :15:50. | :15:56.
thinking. What makes a healthy city? Would it be making more of the River | :15:57. | :16:02.
Lagan? And make all cycle lanes as good as this one? Or just make | :16:03. | :16:12.
better use of the wide open space that could be available right in the | :16:13. | :16:17.
heart of the city? While pedestrianise in the City Hall area | :16:18. | :16:24.
is idyllic, some think compare to other European cities, Northern | :16:25. | :16:33.
Ireland needs to step up. Here the figure is less than 5% compared to | :16:34. | :16:36.
Copenhagen where it is 46%. Transport spaces have breathed new | :16:37. | :16:42.
life into areas across the UK and Europe, promoting better health and | :16:43. | :16:46.
attracting tourists. Here in north Belfast, these pupils from a local | :16:47. | :16:50.
primary school no fault they want from their city. More green space | :16:51. | :16:59.
for the children to play. No burning things and no throwing stuff into | :17:00. | :17:05.
the river. I would like to see more pictures and more vegetable patches. | :17:06. | :17:07.
Transforming Belfast means more pictures and more vegetable patches. | :17:08. | :17:12.
quirky cabbies like this be used on the Titanic Quarter. Its managers | :17:13. | :17:18.
says creativity must be encouraged. Everything is donated and people | :17:19. | :17:22.
come in for coffee and they leave whatever they can. So I could leave | :17:23. | :17:27.
you 50p or ?50? It would be up to you. We would not know. Belfast city | :17:28. | :17:34.
has come a long way but with more ideas like this one, it can go even | :17:35. | :17:43.
further. The Belfast boxer Carl Frampton | :17:44. | :17:46.
headlines a sold out bill at the Odyssey Arena tomorrow - but he's | :17:47. | :17:49.
Watson is with the multiple World Watson is with the multiple World | :17:50. | :17:56.
Champion, Ricky Hatton. Delighted to welcome the five time | :17:57. | :18:00.
World Champion Ricky Hatton - The hit man to his fans - into the BBC | :18:01. | :18:03.
Newsline studio tonight. Ricky is in Belfast as the promoter and coach of | :18:04. | :18:06.
exciting local prospect Ryan Burnett, who's on the undercard | :18:07. | :18:10.
tomorrow night. Great to have you here. You never fought in Belfast | :18:11. | :18:16.
but you know all about the heritage. I did so many things in my boxing | :18:17. | :18:21.
career, but I know the boxing heritage here. Everyone is so | :18:22. | :18:23.
passionate and we will see that tomorrow night. I know how the fans | :18:24. | :18:31.
get behind the fighters. I know when I boxed against a mini did many | :18:32. | :18:36.
moons ago, there was a fantastic reception. It would be great. As we | :18:37. | :18:43.
saw at the way in there was a great atmosphere. You know what it is like | :18:44. | :18:49.
to have a whole city like Manchester behind you. How difficult is it for | :18:50. | :18:53.
this young man from Belfast, Carl Frampton? He was very mature beyond | :18:54. | :19:01.
his years. He is working out at a high level and he has wanted to be a | :19:02. | :19:06.
world champion. You must have the temperament, the attitude, you must | :19:07. | :19:11.
to your advantage. He comes from a good stable with Barry McGuigan. He | :19:12. | :19:23.
has good people around him that will keep him on the right track. You are | :19:24. | :19:29.
looking after Ryan Burnett and he was a glittering young amateur who | :19:30. | :19:32.
won a gold medal at the youth Olympics. He has been cleared from | :19:33. | :19:36.
his brain scan but it has been a difficult time for him. It was | :19:37. | :19:44.
character building for him. It would have been easy to chuck the towel in | :19:45. | :19:49.
and say I have had enough. He was in the gym every day. By the time his | :19:50. | :19:54.
debut came he was like a miniature seasoned professional. He is a nice | :19:55. | :20:00.
kid and a joy to train, very easy to train. He has so much talent, it is | :20:01. | :20:04.
frightening but I do not want to put too much pressure on him. Carl | :20:05. | :20:10.
Frampton is his hero and I could see him going for Karl has been. He | :20:11. | :20:15.
wants to follow him. Great to see two giants of boxing, you and Barry | :20:16. | :20:20.
McGuigan as promoters. Does that help replace the boys of fighting? | :20:21. | :20:24.
It does a little bit. It will never be the same. I am sure Barry is the | :20:25. | :20:31.
same. -- the buzz of fighting. It gives a little bit back. Barry | :20:32. | :20:37.
McGuigan has been a massive success, like I had been. It is nice | :20:38. | :20:42.
to give a little bit back. We have had a wonderful life and we want to | :20:43. | :20:46.
give someone else the chance. Thank you very much. | :20:47. | :20:54.
By the time Carl Frampton gets into the ring we will know whether | :20:55. | :20:58.
Ulsters rugby players have won in Europe. Ruan Pienaar will make his | :20:59. | :21:01.
first start of the season for Ulster in tomorrow's Heineken Cup clash | :21:02. | :21:04.
with Montpellier. The away trip to France is arguably the toughest test | :21:05. | :21:08.
in the pool stages of the European Cup this season for Mark Anscombe's | :21:09. | :21:11.
side after both teams won their opening games last weekend. After a | :21:12. | :21:14.
mediocre start to the season, Ulster rugby or flying high. They are into | :21:15. | :21:17.
the top four of the PRO12 in the European cup. Tomorrow, this current | :21:18. | :21:24.
Ulster squad faces there most of the capacity to date as they play | :21:25. | :21:30.
Montpelier. They are the best team in France. It will be a massive | :21:31. | :21:35.
game. We are going believing we can then and we can then. We have got to | :21:36. | :21:42.
believe that we can go all the way and win this game. Bolster rugby won | :21:43. | :21:48.
this game once before back in 1999 and it is a long way until the final | :21:49. | :21:53.
-- final in May but is this team good enough? You have to believe | :21:54. | :22:01.
that we are. -- Ulster rugby. Leinster have shown that they are | :22:02. | :22:06.
well and able to take on any team in Europe and I think we have the | :22:07. | :22:10.
players and the squad to do that. A victory tomorrow would help pave the | :22:11. | :22:15.
path for special days ahead, just like it was back in 1999! There is | :22:16. | :22:26.
live commentary of that game on radio Ulster tomorrow along with | :22:27. | :22:30.
local football and the first two of the International Rules matches. | :22:31. | :22:34.
Finally Rory McIlroy shot a two-under par 69 in his second round | :22:35. | :22:38.
at the Korean Open and is now two shots off the lead. | :22:39. | :22:46.
Described the weather today. How was it looking for the weekend? | :22:47. | :22:55.
If you are in the North and East there is more heavy rain on the way. | :22:56. | :23:06.
It will be a better picture for the west across County Fermanagh and | :23:07. | :23:09.
County Tyrone. Eventually that rain will ease and for most places it | :23:10. | :23:14.
will clear. It will not be eight cold night and temperatures will | :23:15. | :23:19.
stay around 11 degrees. That is higher than expected for this time | :23:20. | :23:23.
of year. Tomorrow morning it will be dry at first and you should not need | :23:24. | :23:27.
an umbrella. Some places will be grey and Brisley -- drizzly but | :23:28. | :23:34.
there will be plenty of clear skies on offer. Towards the afternoon, the | :23:35. | :23:41.
cloud will thicken and rain will come in. Some of the rain will be | :23:42. | :23:46.
quite heavy. With the ground already well saturated, you should see some | :23:47. | :23:51.
localised flooding. Temperatures will reach around 15 degrees, well | :23:52. | :23:59.
above average for the time of year. Eventually they rain will ease from | :24:00. | :24:03.
the south, but it will take a little while to clear from the North Coast. | :24:04. | :24:13.
It is not great weather for the International Ploughing | :24:14. | :24:20.
Championships. Tomorrow night it will dry up for a little while and | :24:21. | :24:24.
temperatures will stay around 11 degrees. Looking towards Sunday, we | :24:25. | :24:31.
can see some more low-pressure systems moving in. We can expect | :24:32. | :24:36.
further showers and some of them will be quite heavy. In between the | :24:37. | :24:39.
showers there will be some bright will be quite heavy. In between the | :24:40. | :24:44.
weather. Temperatures will stay above average, reaching 14 degrees. | :24:45. | :24:49.
The unsettled weather will stay with us into next week. It will be a | :24:50. | :24:53.
mixture of sunny spells and scattered showers with high | :24:54. | :24:55.
temperatures. That's all from the BBC Newsline | :24:56. | :24:58.
team. Keep up to date with News Online and you can follow us on | :24:59. | :24:59.
