Devon, the storm brought 40 millimetres of rain in | :00:00. | 3:59:59
Good evening. A popular restaurant has been destroyed by fire in | :00:00. | :00:11.
Coleraine. It broke out at the Yoko Noodle Bar at around teatime. A | :00:12. | :00:15.
nearby restautrant also had to be evacuated. No-one was injured. Live | :00:16. | :00:20.
now to our reporter, Kevin Sharkey, who is at the scene. Kevin, how did | :00:21. | :00:30.
it start? Valentine's night, one of the bus nights of the year for the | :00:31. | :00:37.
restaurant trade and popular night for couples everywhere. As you can | :00:38. | :00:43.
see behind me, the Yoko Restaurant now an emergency scene. The fire | :00:44. | :00:49.
broke out at 6. 6.30pm this evening. Party goers were sitting down and | :00:50. | :00:52.
the restaurant staff were preparing their meals, about to serve, when | :00:53. | :00:56.
the alarm went. At that stage everybody was evacuated. People were | :00:57. | :01:03.
evacuating from an adjourning Indian restaurant. I spoke to the manager | :01:04. | :01:07.
of the Indian restaurant. He spoke of the panic when the alarm went | :01:08. | :01:12.
off. I told my customers that everybody had to leave. The wind was | :01:13. | :01:16.
blowing this way. All the smoke was coming into my restaurant. It was | :01:17. | :01:20.
difficult to work in my restaurant. It happened so quickly, within | :01:21. | :01:26.
minutes because of the strong winds, all the smoke was coming this way. | :01:27. | :01:32.
What is the latest there from the scene? Well, as you can see, Tina, | :01:33. | :01:38.
the emergency situation is continuing. Now, the Fire Service | :01:39. | :01:43.
are scaling it down. There is still smoke billowing from the roof. A lot | :01:44. | :01:47.
of staff are standing around wondering what happened tonight. For | :01:48. | :01:53.
the owners of the Yoko Intole Bar, tomorrow morning they have to return | :01:54. | :01:58.
here and pick up the pieces. Kevin Sharkey, live from Coleraine, thank | :01:59. | :02:06.
you. A man from Newry says he is going through a "reoccurring | :02:07. | :02:08.
nightmare." His nephew has died after being hit by a car in San | :02:09. | :02:12.
Francisco. His son was killed in similar circumstances, also in the | :02:13. | :02:15.
United States. Paul Lambert, who was 35, was knocked down on Wednesday | :02:16. | :02:18.
morning. His cousin was killed by a hit-and-run driver eight months ago. | :02:19. | :02:24.
This from Nicola Weir. This is where Paul Lambert was knocked down. Hit | :02:25. | :02:32.
as he cross -- crossed the road with friends after buying a sandwich. A | :02:33. | :02:38.
pedestrian was left dead on the edge of Pacific Heights. Had been working | :02:39. | :02:46.
for a charity in ss -- is ofis of. He was due to return to his job in | :02:47. | :02:52.
Madrid next year. A speeding car came around the corner and struck | :02:53. | :02:59.
him. Threw him 30, 40 yards down the road. At the moment, it's kind of | :03:00. | :03:06.
unreal. It is. It's... We're really stunned. And, until we get Paul's | :03:07. | :03:13.
body home, it's, as I say, unreal. The second tragedy to hit the | :03:14. | :03:17.
family. Paul's cousin, Kevin Bell, was killed by a hit-and-run driver | :03:18. | :03:22.
outside his apartment in New York in June. Much the same as Paul. Kevin | :03:23. | :03:27.
was out on a night and returning home heaven was outside his | :03:28. | :03:31.
apartment. He got out of a taxi. Again, a speeding car hit him and | :03:32. | :03:37.
drove on. So, it's happened twice now. It's terrible. The cousins | :03:38. | :03:43.
attended the Abbey Christian Brother's Grammar School in Newry. | :03:44. | :03:47.
It's very difficult for the family. It's hard to believe. I'm sure they | :03:48. | :03:51.
are in shock, having gone through it once, they would have to go through | :03:52. | :03:55.
it a second time with someone so loved by them all. Paul Lambert's | :03:56. | :03:59.
body is expected to be brought home on Monday. Nicola Weir, BBC | :04:00. | :04:09.
Newsline, Newry. A woman has been hurt in a crash involving two cars | :04:10. | :04:12.
near Rasharkin in County Antrim. The collision was at Craigs Road this | :04:13. | :04:15.
afternoon. The Police say the woman's injuries are not | :04:16. | :04:17.
life-threatening. Driving conditions because of snow and rain have been | :04:18. | :04:20.
appalling today. Patricia Robie's report begins with that crash near | :04:21. | :04:26.
Rasharkin. A car and home were damaged as drivers struggled with | :04:27. | :04:29.
the weather. The police have been urging care and caution on the | :04:30. | :04:33.
roads. This crash happened after two cars collided. Elsewhere, one of the | :04:34. | :04:37.
high ground commuter routes in Northern Ireland today became a | :04:38. | :04:41.
high-risk route. Through the day, drivers have had to take their time | :04:42. | :04:45.
along the main Londonderry to Belfast road. The police have warned | :04:46. | :04:51.
motorists to drive with care. Then this evening conditions worsened. | :04:52. | :04:55.
Police closed the road for a time. The road is open again, it's only | :04:56. | :05:00.
passable with extreme care. There were Arctic conditions towards the | :05:01. | :05:05.
north coast, with the Limavady Coleraine Road posing problems for | :05:06. | :05:09.
drivers. In Belfast, more difficult conditions on the roads, rain the | :05:10. | :05:13.
problem here. Throughout the afternoon the constant downpour took | :05:14. | :05:18.
its toll. The end of the week rush-hour slower than usual, with | :05:19. | :05:24.
longtailbacks. Disruption wasn't confined to the roads. Ulster rugby | :05:25. | :05:30.
players had to wait to see if their Pro12 match against the Scarlets | :05:31. | :05:33.
would go-ahead. The rain just kept coming. In the end, under foot | :05:34. | :05:39.
conditions were too dangerous and the game was postponed. Patricia | :05:40. | :05:48.
Robie, BBC Newsline. A man from south Belfast has been jailed for | :05:49. | :05:51.
killing a pedestrian in the city two years ago. Steven McManus, who is 24 | :05:52. | :05:55.
and from Breda Park, pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous | :05:56. | :05:58.
driving. His car struck 25-year-old Niall Harrigan on Cromac Street in | :05:59. | :06:01.
2012. The driver was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in prison, | :06:02. | :06:04.
half of which he will spend on probation. He was disqualified from | :06:05. | :06:06.
driving for three years. When George Clooney's new movie, called The | :06:07. | :06:11.
Monuments Men, opened in Belfast tonight, in the cinema audience was | :06:12. | :06:16.
a man from the east of the city who played a part in this war story - | :06:17. | :06:19.
not in the film, but real-life events. BBC Newsline's Mervyn Jess | :06:20. | :06:23.
has been talking to the former US soldier from Belfast. | :06:24. | :06:30.
Teddy was born in New York, but brought up in Belfast. When America | :06:31. | :06:36.
entered the Second World War he joined the US army, fighting his way | :06:37. | :06:40.
through France, Germany and to Austria. It was here that he found | :06:41. | :06:46.
himself deep inside a saltmine, handling a Nazi treasure trove of | :06:47. | :06:55.
stolen artworks. These crates were stacked up in it. We were told they | :06:56. | :07:03.
were Goerings' treasures that he'd taken from different cities from | :07:04. | :07:07.
museums and one thing and another. Now, that little-known episode of | :07:08. | :07:12.
the war has been made into a movie, starring and directored by George | :07:13. | :07:17.
Clooney. We've been tasked with the finding and protecting of over five | :07:18. | :07:22.
million pieces of stolen after the artwork. There were art treasures | :07:23. | :07:28.
stolen from different places. But not on your shift? Not on our shift. | :07:29. | :07:36.
None stolen. They were watching us too closely. This mission was never | :07:37. | :07:41.
designed to succeed. If they were honest, they would tell us. They | :07:42. | :07:45.
would tell us with this many people dying, who cares about art. Millions | :07:46. | :07:52.
pounds worth of dollars of stuff, didn't know anything about it. It | :07:53. | :07:58.
must have been some monies worth in it. That was the only part I had | :07:59. | :08:02.
with the art treasures. Shifting them from the saltmines onto the | :08:03. | :08:08.
trucks and taking them back to the rightful owners. We always thought | :08:09. | :08:12.
of that though. The 94-year-old veteran will be casting a critical | :08:13. | :08:17.
eye over how Hollywood depicts what happened all those years ago in | :08:18. | :08:24.
Austria. The Now the weekend weather forecast now. Heavy rain, which led | :08:25. | :08:30.
to flooding, snow, particularly over the high ground, with strong winds, | :08:31. | :08:35.
blizzard conditions on high level roads too. It's warmed up enough so | :08:36. | :08:39.
that snow will not be a big problem tonight. The heavy rain warning is | :08:40. | :08:43.
in force right through until Saturday morning. Although it does | :08:44. | :08:47.
look as though the rain will be less intense tonight. Over the highest | :08:48. | :08:50.
roads, particularly in the Glenshane, there could be snow by | :08:51. | :08:54.
tomorrow morning. With temperatures falling low it could be icy here. | :08:55. | :08:58.
Otherwise, ice and frost will not be a problem tonight. Tomorrow, the | :08:59. | :09:03.
blustery wind will pick up, making it feel cool. There will be showers | :09:04. | :09:06.
around. There will be dry spells too. You can see good gaps between | :09:07. | :09:11.
those showers through the second-half of the morning. Sunshine | :09:12. | :09:14.
coming out across Northern Ireland too. Much better day also for the | :09:15. | :09:18.
Republic of Ireland, with a lot of dry and bright weather. Likewise, | :09:19. | :09:24.
for Scotland. Heavy rain to Wales and northern England which will move | :09:25. | :09:27.
into the Midland and southern England during the day. The strong | :09:28. | :09:30.
gusty winds over the south-east will edge away quite quickly too. It's a | :09:31. | :09:36.
better day for Northern Ireland. Not completely dry, yes, there will be | :09:37. | :09:39.
showers around, yes, it will be quite blustery. In between some | :09:40. | :09:43.
sunshine with temperatures fairly decent at around seven degrees. On | :09:44. | :09:47.
Sunday, there will be dry weather, particularly through the morning. | :09:48. | :09:50.
More cloud with some showers in the afternoon and on Sunday night, | :09:51. | :09:54.
unfortunately, more wet and windy weather returns for the new week. | :09:55. | :10:00.
That is it for now. Have a great weekend. Goodbye. | :10:01. | :10:02. |
