gone wrong with Wales? But now on BBC One, it's time for the news | :00:00. | :00:00.
where Good evening. A man from County | :00:00. | :00:15.
Tyrone has been killed in an incident at a concrete firm in | :00:16. | :00:18.
Dungannon. It happened at Joseph Barrett and Sons on Eglish Road | :00:19. | :00:21.
earlier this afternoon. In a statement, the company said they | :00:22. | :00:24.
were numbed by the sudden passing of an esteemed colleague and lifelong | :00:25. | :00:27.
friend, and extended their sympathies to his wife and children. | :00:28. | :00:30.
The Health and Safety Executive is investigating what happened. It is a | :00:31. | :00:40.
terrible tragedy, a tragic incident that happened here today and has | :00:41. | :00:44.
shocked the entire community. Even the people he works for would be | :00:45. | :00:48.
devastated by this affair. It is just one of these things that is | :00:49. | :00:55.
terrible and for his wife and all his family, it must be devastating. | :00:56. | :01:02.
A fourth man has been given a life sentence for murdering Philip | :01:03. | :01:04.
Strickland from Comber. He was shot dead during a dispute | :01:05. | :01:08.
with a County Down family two years ago. Stephen McCaughey from | :01:09. | :01:10.
Shackleton Walk in Newtownards was convicted today, as Kevin Sharkey | :01:11. | :01:19.
reports. An ordinary image, Philip Strickland at a filling station in | :01:20. | :01:22.
Comber shortly before being attacked. Within and are of getting | :01:23. | :01:28.
petrol and paying for it, he was shot twice, murdered by a father and | :01:29. | :01:32.
two sons and one of their friends. A six-week trial ended today. Stephen | :01:33. | :01:37.
McCarthy was convicted. The judge asked the jury, have you reached a | :01:38. | :01:41.
verdict on the first kind of murder? The jury replied, yes, guilty by | :01:42. | :01:48.
majority. Mr justice we're addressed Stephen McCaughey and said, you have | :01:49. | :01:52.
been found guilty of murder and the only sentence I can pass is life | :01:53. | :01:55.
imprisonment. Also serving life sentences for the murder are Jimmy | :01:56. | :02:01.
Seales, convicted yesterday. Here seen here protesting at a Department | :02:02. | :02:07.
of Agriculture office in the past. Two of the farmer's sons, Ian and | :02:08. | :02:11.
Jason Weir from near Killinchy, have also been convicted. Details of a | :02:12. | :02:18.
local dispute preceding the murder emerged during the trial. The pig | :02:19. | :02:23.
farmer claimed it began when he told a local man to remove cannabis being | :02:24. | :02:29.
grown in a shed he owned. He was later starved and beaten with iron | :02:30. | :02:34.
bars. This was followed by Facebook comments and offensive graffiti | :02:35. | :02:36.
about the farmer attributed to Philip Strickland. The following | :02:37. | :02:40.
year he died after being shot in the leg at his farm, then driven | :02:41. | :02:46.
elsewhere and shot in the face. Just over two years later his family was | :02:47. | :02:49.
in court for the end of the murder trial. On behalf of my family I | :02:50. | :02:53.
would like to take this opportunity to thank members of the police and | :02:54. | :02:57.
the legal team for their hard work to successfully convey those | :02:58. | :02:59.
responsible for the murder of Philip. -- to successfully convert. | :03:00. | :03:07.
It has been a difficult time for us. However we are happy with this | :03:08. | :03:11.
outcome and appreciated the support from everyone. Thank you. Two years | :03:12. | :03:18.
after he was last seen living a normal life, two men are now | :03:19. | :03:24.
convicted for his murder. The Lord Mayor of Belfast has been | :03:25. | :03:27.
giving evidence in the trial of three people accused of disorderly | :03:28. | :03:30.
conduct at the re-opening of Woodvale Children's Park. Mairtin O | :03:31. | :03:33.
Muilleoir of Sinn Fein was jostled and pushed by protestors in the wake | :03:34. | :03:37.
of a Twelfth parade being blocked from passing the Ardoyne shops. | :03:38. | :03:43.
Eunan McConville reports. August last year, the reopening of a | :03:44. | :03:50.
children's park in Belfast and extra police officers are called in to | :03:51. | :03:53.
help get the Sinn Fein Lord Mayor Eric amid a loyalist protest. This | :03:54. | :03:57.
morning, Mairtin O Muilleoir was in the Magistrates' Court to give | :03:58. | :04:00.
evidence against the three people charged with disorderly behaviour, | :04:01. | :04:03.
Maureen Simpson, Samuel Brown and Paul McTeer, all from North Belfast. | :04:04. | :04:13.
All three deny the charges. The court was shown video footage. From | :04:14. | :04:21.
Sinn Fein's publicity website. The Lord Mayor said that when he got to | :04:22. | :04:26.
Woodvale Park he became aware of the protesters. He said he got out of | :04:27. | :04:29.
the car, some people pushed towards him and he said he was shoved and | :04:30. | :04:36.
hit in the back of the head. He was hit with what turned out to be a | :04:37. | :04:39.
burger. He told the court that when he made his way back to the car, | :04:40. | :04:43.
himself and police officers where attacked and abused. He said he was | :04:44. | :04:49.
subjected to a torrent of bile and vitriolic abuse. Lawyers for the | :04:50. | :04:56.
defence had put it to the Lord Mayor that the High Sheriff of Belfast had | :04:57. | :05:00.
contacted him prior to the park event, urging him to allow a DUP | :05:01. | :05:03.
politician to open the park. The Lord Mayor told the court that it | :05:04. | :05:07.
was not something in his gift to permit and that he had taken advice | :05:08. | :05:11.
from the police before going to Woodvale Park and was told it would | :05:12. | :05:14.
be safe. In the afternoon the court was shown some more footage of the | :05:15. | :05:18.
event. The evidence centred on what a number of police officers have to | :05:19. | :05:20.
say. The case continues. The families of a young man and | :05:21. | :05:25.
woman who died from medical complications brought on by eating | :05:26. | :05:28.
disorders say more support is needed for sufferers. Laurence Nugent from | :05:29. | :05:32.
Belfast and Danielle O'Neill from Londonderry were both 24 years old. | :05:33. | :05:42.
Tara Mills has this report. Not the face of someone you would expect to | :05:43. | :05:46.
have an eating disorder. To those outside, Laurence Nugent lived a | :05:47. | :05:49.
normal life, but he kept a very deep secret. He was totally ashamed of | :05:50. | :05:58.
himself. He hated himself. He told us he hated the very look of | :05:59. | :06:03.
himself. As a family we lived in turmoil every day. We didn't know | :06:04. | :06:08.
whether he was going to be alive when we came home. I used to ring | :06:09. | :06:13.
him from work to make sure he was alive. You were very afraid for him. | :06:14. | :06:18.
Sadly, their fears were realised, but not how they expected. He died | :06:19. | :06:23.
from a heart attack, the bulimia and starvation taking its toll on his | :06:24. | :06:28.
body. He didn't trust anybody. He was afraid to tell his friends, to | :06:29. | :06:37.
say he couldn't cope. Yu was ashamed to say he was not being the man. I | :06:38. | :06:43.
am saying to every young man out there in Northern Ireland do not be | :06:44. | :06:49.
afraid because this can kill you. Another family shares a similar | :06:50. | :06:52.
story. Adelaide O'Neill lost her daughter to anorexia. Her descent | :06:53. | :06:58.
into the illness was much more rapid than Lawrence's. I would say to | :06:59. | :07:02.
anybody out there, eating disorders don't have any respect for anybody. | :07:03. | :07:05.
Danielle would have been the last person I would have thought would | :07:06. | :07:09.
have had an eating disorder. She said, I never intended to be this | :07:10. | :07:14.
thin. It was never my intention. It was almost as though it was a | :07:15. | :07:23.
roller-coaster for her. Danielle had excellent help, but sadly it wasn't | :07:24. | :07:27.
enough. Her mum believes young people don't realise the permanent | :07:28. | :07:32.
damage an eating disorder can cause. Both families now have to live with | :07:33. | :07:35.
every treatment. A difficult journey lies ahead but if speaking out helps | :07:36. | :07:41.
just one other family, they say their loss will not have been in | :07:42. | :07:44.
vain. A judge has told a Belfast mother | :07:45. | :07:48.
had it not been for her four children she would be facing an | :07:49. | :07:50.
immediate jail sentence. Gillian Turtle from Glenbryn Parade had | :07:51. | :07:53.
claimed Income Support and Housing Benefit of more than ?100,000 over | :07:54. | :07:58.
eight years. The court was told she had denied her partner, who had a | :07:59. | :08:02.
job, was living with her, but later admitted he did and said she thought | :08:03. | :08:06.
she could get away with it. Her 18-month jail sentence was suspended | :08:07. | :08:11.
for three years. The Health Minister, Edwin Poots, | :08:12. | :08:14.
has requested a meeting with the Secretary of State about the closure | :08:15. | :08:17.
of a charity-run coffee shop and walled garden at Hillsborough | :08:18. | :08:20.
Castle. The Secret Garden is run by Praxis Care and employs people with | :08:21. | :08:26.
learning difficulties. The agreement with the Castle estate is coming to | :08:27. | :08:30.
an end and the charity must find new premises. Today, the Northern | :08:31. | :08:37.
Ireland Office said it was willing to be flexible about the timescale | :08:38. | :08:41.
for it leaving the walled garden. The weather forecast is next. It was | :08:42. | :08:48.
good to see some dry weather today. A little brightness as well. There | :08:49. | :08:52.
is some rain moving back into Fermanagh, and a few dribs and drabs | :08:53. | :08:57.
moving east, enough cloud to keep the frost and ice awake at first | :08:58. | :09:02.
thing tomorrow could be down. Most of Wednesday will end up reasonably | :09:03. | :09:08.
dry and bright. First thing some mist and low cloud over the hills | :09:09. | :09:12.
and drizzly rain. It shouldn't be long before it brightens in the | :09:13. | :09:16.
second half of the morning and then a good part of the date will be dry. | :09:17. | :09:19.
Some brightness also for the Republic of Ireland, bits and pieces | :09:20. | :09:24.
of rain over Scotland and northern England but a lot of dry weather | :09:25. | :09:30.
across Britain. The next area of rain moves into the west and south | :09:31. | :09:35.
of Ireland tomorrow afternoon. That will move toward south Wales and | :09:36. | :09:38.
south-west England and it is coming our way tomorrow night but before | :09:39. | :09:43.
then the afternoon will not be too bad, the odd shower but reasonably | :09:44. | :09:49.
dry, temperatures up to 10 degrees. That of a breeze towards the east | :09:50. | :09:53.
coast and by tea-time it is raining and that will extend east, so some | :09:54. | :09:58.
wet weather into Thursday morning, once again quite mild that there | :09:59. | :10:02.
will be strong winds through the night and it will still be wet and | :10:03. | :10:05.
windy for a while on Thursday and the East, but brightening up with | :10:06. | :10:10.
showers moving in from the West and those could get wintry. Feeling | :10:11. | :10:14.
colder on Friday with sunshine and showers. | :10:15. | :10:20.
BBC Newsline is back here at 6:25am. Good night. | :10:21. | :10:23.
Should Britain have entered the Great War? | :10:24. | :10:25.
Britain's decision for war was a disaster | :10:26. | :10:28.
