Independence Square tonight, despite a | :00:00. | :00:13.
Hello and welcome to BBC Newsline. Tonight's top stories. Over 200 jobs | :00:14. | :00:21.
under threat after this firm goes into administration in Dungiven. 30 | :00:22. | :00:29.
years after the body of the dead baby boy was found by a river bank, | :00:30. | :00:37.
the police had a DNA profile. More trouble at the Odyssey as glasses | :00:38. | :00:40.
and other objects are thrown during a darts competition. Can Ireland win | :00:41. | :00:49.
the Triple Crown at the home of English Rugby? And there is more | :00:50. | :00:54.
rain to come this weekend, a warning has been issued. I'll be back with a | :00:55. | :00:59.
full forecast. Two hundred workers face an anxious weekend after the | :01:00. | :01:02.
firm they work for went into administratioin. KPL Contracts is | :01:03. | :01:05.
based in Dungiven, but its vans are a familiar sight across Northern | :01:06. | :01:08.
Ireland. They work for utility companies like BT and NIE, but it | :01:09. | :01:11.
was property development that got the firm into financial trouble, as | :01:12. | :01:14.
our Economics and Business Editor John Campbell now reports. The fans | :01:15. | :01:27.
are lorries of the company are a familiar sight across Northern | :01:28. | :01:30.
Ireland. They install and maintain water pipes and street lights, but | :01:31. | :01:35.
they got into property development as well. There were plans to build | :01:36. | :01:39.
homes here in Ballyclare, but only the first phase was delivered, the | :01:40. | :01:44.
property borrowings amounted to as much as ?50 million. The firm's | :01:45. | :01:50.
founder said they had been in discussions with the lender in order | :01:51. | :01:54.
to restructure the company and despite are structured that sugar | :01:55. | :01:58.
are restrictions of the property debt, it could not be helped. | :01:59. | :02:02.
Administration was the only option and workers were called together to | :02:03. | :02:08.
hear the bad news. There are futures are now uncertain, all were | :02:09. | :02:13.
reluctant to speak. KPL Contracts is a significant employer in Dungiven | :02:14. | :02:17.
and there is a network of subcontractors who are likely to | :02:18. | :02:21.
lose money. A lot of the work that they would carry out would have been | :02:22. | :02:27.
through subcontractors, most of whom are local here. I do know that a | :02:28. | :02:31.
small number of those have secured contracts with other companies, so | :02:32. | :02:36.
there might be some relief in that, what for the most of them, it will | :02:37. | :02:41.
be a case of getting out there and trying to re-establish themselves. | :02:42. | :02:47.
Probably as well as being paid for work that has been done up to now. | :02:48. | :02:52.
Administrators are talking to the main customers of the company and it | :02:53. | :02:55.
is those discussions which will determine the future of this | :02:56. | :03:00.
business and the workers. By now this is a familiar tale, a solid | :03:01. | :03:06.
trading business up an done by boomtime property borrowings. It may | :03:07. | :03:11.
not be the last as banks continue working through their bad property | :03:12. | :03:16.
loans. Police investigating the suspicious death of a newborn baby | :03:17. | :03:19.
found 30 years ago say they've established a DNA profile which may | :03:20. | :03:23.
help them find the parents. The child was found in a bag by a river | :03:24. | :03:26.
near Lisburn. Detectives have used advances in forensic science to help | :03:27. | :03:30.
them revisit the case. Conor Macauley reports. The discovery was | :03:31. | :03:42.
made on the banks of a river near Lisburn 30 years ago today. It flows | :03:43. | :03:49.
by a road outside a village, a sparsely populated spot. It would | :03:50. | :03:54.
have taken those responsible only minutes to carry the tiny body along | :03:55. | :04:00.
the river and dump it. This police photograph shows the scene at the | :04:01. | :04:04.
time. The child had been born alive, but a postmortem revealed he died | :04:05. | :04:10.
from head injuries. On the 21st of February, 1984, woman walking her | :04:11. | :04:18.
dog along the banks of the river, not far from village, found the body | :04:19. | :04:21.
of the dead baby boy. He had been placed in a plastic bag and left | :04:22. | :04:27.
amongst the brambles. This is the bag he was found in. The image | :04:28. | :04:32.
released today as part of a wider appeal. Using advances in forensic | :04:33. | :04:38.
science, police have extracted a DNA profile at which they believe they | :04:39. | :04:42.
can use to match the child to its parents. He did survive after birth | :04:43. | :04:49.
and he had sustained head injuries. The cause of the injuries is a line | :04:50. | :04:54.
of enquiry, I am keeping an open mind. We are appealing to the | :04:55. | :04:58.
parents who have been thinking about this for the last 30 years and we | :04:59. | :05:05.
appeal for them to come forward. The death of the baby boy shocked people | :05:06. | :05:12.
living nearby. Edwin Poots remembers the incident well. The loss of a | :05:13. | :05:19.
baby in such circumstances is hugely tragic. Irrespective of the | :05:20. | :05:22.
circumstances, we really need to know what the truth was and to get | :05:23. | :05:27.
to the truth and it is better for everyone involved that the truth is | :05:28. | :05:35.
identified and that justice is done. Police say if anyone suspects that | :05:36. | :05:39.
they know the parents, they should speak to police who will carry out a | :05:40. | :05:45.
DNA comparison. The family of a Londonderry man who was killed by a | :05:46. | :05:48.
speeding drunk driver in 2009 say they want the legal system to review | :05:49. | :05:52.
the sentences handed down by the courts. Martin Gallagher's family | :05:53. | :05:54.
believe the sentencing policy appears to be inconsistent and | :05:55. | :05:57.
leaves families confused. Here's our North-West reporter, Keiron Tourish. | :05:58. | :06:09.
Martin Gallagher's parents regularly visit his grave, a poignant moment | :06:10. | :06:14.
when they can reflect on a life so full of joy and good humour. The | :06:15. | :06:19.
25-year-old was walking home from Halloween celebrations in 2009 when | :06:20. | :06:27.
he was killed by a drunk driver. He served three years in jail. We had | :06:28. | :06:35.
no trouble with him. He ran and raised money for charities. We miss | :06:36. | :06:42.
him a lot. The family believe the sentence was unduly lenient and | :06:43. | :06:46.
raised their concerns after the recent case of a police officer who | :06:47. | :06:52.
was killed. A man admitted her manslaughter, he was given an | :06:53. | :06:57.
indeterminate sentence but must serve at least six years before | :06:58. | :07:01.
review. He had been drinking and was on drugs when he drove through two | :07:02. | :07:07.
red lights before the fatal crash. It was string can drugs and | :07:08. | :07:11.
speeding, exactly the same as Martin. -- drinking and drugs. How | :07:12. | :07:18.
can there be a difference? There is no difference. A lot of people were | :07:19. | :07:27.
watching the case to see what the sentencing would be, because they | :07:28. | :07:35.
were similar. He did not get an off. Life is a life. It hurts us more. | :07:36. | :07:51.
How can one get six years? I would like to see something change. It | :07:52. | :07:58.
will not help us. When you get that knock to say that your child has | :07:59. | :08:02.
been killed, I think all sentencing should be reviewed. There is no one | :08:03. | :08:08.
to tell you how to cope when you lose a child. You are torn apart. | :08:09. | :08:16.
Martin Gallagher's parents say they are -- they are concerned about the | :08:17. | :08:21.
legal system which they feel is confusing for Brive to families. The | :08:22. | :08:25.
department of justice says it is down to the individual judge, having | :08:26. | :08:32.
heard all the evidence -- but relieved families. He is confident | :08:33. | :08:39.
that measures are in place to address concerns about Anju | :08:40. | :08:45.
leniently. There is no doubt that some people believe sentences were | :08:46. | :08:50.
not stiff enough. Judges have a difficult job to do, they need to | :08:51. | :08:57.
look at the individual issues. Taking into account things like a | :08:58. | :09:02.
victim impact statements. The family say a review of sentencing is too | :09:03. | :09:07.
late for them, but longer jail terms may act as a deterrent in future. | :09:08. | :09:12.
For now, they are left with only memories. Still to come on the | :09:13. | :09:17.
programme. Why, after last year's wash-out, a top ploughing contest IS | :09:18. | :09:20.
going ahead in County Armagh tomorrow. Darts fans have called on | :09:21. | :09:29.
the organisers of Premier League Matches at the Odyssey Arena in | :09:30. | :09:32.
Belfast to do more to control drunken supporters. Thousands of | :09:33. | :09:35.
people were at the arena last night when the event was marred by Fights | :09:36. | :09:49.
and other incidents. Big names and big scores providing a big night of | :09:50. | :09:58.
entertainment. This is magnificent! Sizes were in the Odyssey for all | :09:59. | :10:05.
the action in the darts. This is what fans come to see and towards | :10:06. | :10:09.
the end of the event last night, this is what they got. They are | :10:10. | :10:17.
fighting in the corner. As television cameras brought coverage | :10:18. | :10:23.
around the world, glasses were flying around the arena. Hundreds of | :10:24. | :10:29.
fans were showered with drink. Diets has a huge following here, but it | :10:30. | :10:35.
seems the behaviour of a minority of fans taints the atmosphere. -- | :10:36. | :10:44.
darts. It is a great night out, a family occasion. I have been to the | :10:45. | :10:49.
Odyssey for the last few years, but I did not go this year because of | :10:50. | :10:54.
seems I have witnessed in the past. Cried control has been an issue. Two | :10:55. | :11:00.
weeks ago, and major incident was declared following a concert. -- | :11:01. | :11:07.
crowd control. Regular darts fans are ask in the Odyssey to do more to | :11:08. | :11:12.
control the small number of fans spoiling it for the majority. We | :11:13. | :11:17.
asked for a response and they said they are making no comment, so fans | :11:18. | :11:21.
will have to wait until the next big event to find out if darts are all | :11:22. | :11:31.
that will be thrown on the night. Meanwhile, a review of a major | :11:32. | :11:34.
incident at Belfast's Odyssey Arena has made a series of | :11:35. | :11:37.
recommendations. More than a hundred young people attending the DJ | :11:38. | :11:40.
Hardwell concert earlier this month were treated for the effects of | :11:41. | :11:43.
drink and drugs. The proposed changes include appointing extra | :11:44. | :11:45.
staff to liaise between the Odyssey's own paramedics and the | :11:46. | :11:48.
emergency services. The Odyessy arena's medical team will also | :11:49. | :11:50.
undergo training by the Ambulance Service. After 40 years, some of our | :11:51. | :11:57.
biggest leisure centres are set to be run as a nonprofit making trust. | :11:58. | :12:01.
Belfast Council says the idea is to save ratepayers money. But unions | :12:02. | :12:05.
fear it will mean jobs losses or changed contracts which will leave | :12:06. | :12:07.
workers worse off. Here's our business correspondent Julian | :12:08. | :12:17.
O'Neill. Outside City Hall, trade unions gathered in protest. Soon at | :12:18. | :12:23.
300 leisure centre workers will have a new employer, a not-for-profit | :12:24. | :12:27.
trust which is set to take over day-to-day operations at ten council | :12:28. | :12:33.
owned facilities. A new organisation which is running leisure services | :12:34. | :12:36.
will be able to make reductions in staffing levels and will be able to | :12:37. | :12:41.
change terms and conditions of employment. There are no guarantees | :12:42. | :12:46.
and staff cannot rely on any guarantees. The council will retain | :12:47. | :12:51.
ownership of centres and have a say in opening hours and admission | :12:52. | :13:13.
prices. The move is ahead of a major refurbishment programme. This is the | :13:14. | :13:15.
vision for one leisure centre and in all, ?105 million will be invested | :13:16. | :13:18.
to upgrade facilities in the years ahead. Aside from that investment, | :13:19. | :13:20.
the council wants to make a ?2 million saving on just how much its | :13:21. | :13:23.
ten leisure centres are subsidised by ratepayers. The idea is that the | :13:24. | :13:25.
trust will make savings and that makes the unions nervous. It will | :13:26. | :13:28.
also try to improve customer numbers. It is a fresh start and one | :13:29. | :13:34.
that comes with being able to outsource staffing levels. This is | :13:35. | :13:38.
about re-energising staff and the service we provide for the people of | :13:39. | :13:43.
Belfast. We want our staff to be proud and to be incentivised to make | :13:44. | :13:47.
sure they are giving the city best they can give and up until now, we | :13:48. | :13:55.
have had difficulties. Sinn Fein was against this, but despite | :13:56. | :14:00.
opposition, the move looks set to be endorsed at full council with | :14:01. | :14:02.
implementation predicted in the autumn. Twelve men have pleaded not | :14:03. | :14:10.
guilty to killing Kevin McDaid in May 2009. The Catholic community | :14:11. | :14:13.
worker was attacked by a loyalist gang outside his home in Somerset | :14:14. | :14:17.
Drive in Coleraine. At a pre-trial hearing today in Belfast, a High | :14:18. | :14:20.
Court judge criticised the length of time the case has taken to reach | :14:21. | :14:23.
trial. Two other men face lesser charges in relation to the incident, | :14:24. | :14:30.
including threats to kill. Plant machinery worth around 100 thousand | :14:31. | :14:34.
pounds has been damaged in an arson attack in Ballyclare. It's the | :14:35. | :14:37.
second attack on the Lagan Construction Group. A similar attack | :14:38. | :14:40.
at a site in Lisburn two weeks ago caused over two million pounds of | :14:41. | :14:46.
damage. A paramedic has been struck off for allowing his ambulance to | :14:47. | :14:51.
run out of petrol. David Hope, a paramedic with 34 years experience, | :14:52. | :14:54.
had been warned by a trainee that the tank was only a quarter full, | :14:55. | :14:58.
but carried on driving. It ran out of fuel on the way to an emergency | :14:59. | :15:02.
call and another ambulance had to be called, resulting in a 20-minute | :15:03. | :15:05.
delay. He then asked a mechanic to lie about the reason for the | :15:06. | :15:12.
breakdown. You're watching BBC Newsline. Still to come tonight. The | :15:13. | :15:16.
latest from the Ireland camp as they hope to beat England to win the | :15:17. | :15:29.
Triple Crown. If you have ever fancied having a go, tomorrow could | :15:30. | :15:36.
be your chance. One of the highlights of the ploughing calendar | :15:37. | :15:39.
takes place in County Armagh. The Mullahead ploughing match was | :15:40. | :15:41.
cancelled because of the weather last year for the first time in | :15:42. | :15:45.
almost a century. But it's back in business this year and, as our | :15:46. | :15:48.
South-East reporte r Gordon Adair found out, beginners' classes are | :15:49. | :15:51.
part of the attraction. You have to get the right width and depth. You | :15:52. | :15:58.
have to get it straight. It is high pressure staff. We are heading | :15:59. | :16:10.
away, that is good. We will see how you go. Tomorrow, the ever patient | :16:11. | :16:21.
Dermot will be helping novices to turn their first furrow. I am | :16:22. | :16:30.
supposed to keep looking around and judge where my front wheel is. Now, | :16:31. | :16:42.
in its 99th year, the ploughing match has shaken off the | :16:43. | :16:46.
disappointment of last year's cancellation due to bad weather. The | :16:47. | :16:51.
organisers say that the ground this year is surprisingly in fantastic | :16:52. | :16:54.
shape and they expect a record-breaking entry on upwards of | :16:55. | :17:06.
10,000 visitors. A big part of the attraction, is it. We can claim to | :17:07. | :17:13.
be the biggest in the world. We have eight teams this year. 17 teams | :17:14. | :17:18.
coming from across the water and the rest from throughout Northern | :17:19. | :17:25.
Ireland. It must be ignored this and sight to see those horses. When you | :17:26. | :17:34.
see a row of 20 or 30 teams of horses in a line, being worked and | :17:35. | :17:41.
turning the ground, it is amazing. Back to the not so amazing, how did | :17:42. | :17:48.
I do? I am happy enough with that. It is very enjoyable. That is the | :17:49. | :17:54.
main objective, to turn the green into the Brown. That is what good | :17:55. | :18:03.
ploughing is all about. With the food village and crafts, there will | :18:04. | :18:07.
be a lot more on show than pretty ploughing. The Sochi Winter Olympics | :18:08. | :18:17.
finish up on Sunday after more than two weeks of events. Team GB have | :18:18. | :18:21.
equalled their best medal tally at a Winter Games, while the Irish team | :18:22. | :18:24.
sent more athletes than ever before. So, could we see a new generation of | :18:25. | :18:28.
skaters, skiers and snowboarders who will bring home medals from the 2018 | :18:29. | :18:31.
Winter Games in South Korea. Our reporter Ita Dungan is live on the | :18:32. | :18:40.
slopes. Hello. I am here in Craigavon and unfortunately we do | :18:41. | :18:45.
not have the blue skies and mountains in Sochi. It is slopes | :18:46. | :18:52.
like this that British and Irish athletes train on. Has the spectacle | :18:53. | :19:00.
that was Sochi, the kickers, the tumbles, or the slopes, done | :19:01. | :19:06.
anything to bring in new talent? You have been an instructor here for | :19:07. | :19:12.
decades, have we seen an increase in the number of people coming to learn | :19:13. | :19:18.
to ski? Yes. We have doubled hits on our website, put on more courses and | :19:19. | :19:27.
we are really busy. Can you see natural talent? Yes. We also have a | :19:28. | :19:36.
lot of ramps that we are introducing and hopefully we will start a new | :19:37. | :19:41.
club in the near future. You're hoping to get new slopes as well. We | :19:42. | :19:48.
would love that. It would be nice if we could move to a new slope. You | :19:49. | :19:54.
are 14 and have won medals for Ireland. I am skiing here all the | :19:55. | :20:02.
time and I keep improving. You are fearless. I do not think so. You | :20:03. | :20:13.
have been in the Special Olympics. I1-macro two bronze medals in South | :20:14. | :20:20.
Korea and they did the giant slalom. Both of these are going to win | :20:21. | :20:24.
medals for Ireland in the future, but what we will need to know is | :20:25. | :20:28.
whether be more talent because of the events of Sochi? From | :20:29. | :20:35.
Craigavon, back to the studio. Sport now and in the Six Nations, Ireland | :20:36. | :20:39.
can lift the Triple Crown tomorrow. But they'll have to do it at | :20:40. | :20:43.
Twickenham. Gavin's here. Joe Schmidt's side trained at the home | :20:44. | :20:50.
of English Rugby this afternoon. Ireland will be fuller of | :20:51. | :20:52.
confidence. Thomas Niblock is at Twickenham with two former | :20:53. | :20:55.
internationals from both sides who And good luck also to Ireland's | :20:56. | :20:57.
Women, the reigning Six Nations champions, who also take on England | :20:58. | :21:01.
at Twickenham tomorrow night after the men. There is always something | :21:02. | :21:03.
that special when England play are in particularly when the Triple | :21:04. | :21:05.
Crown is on the line and especially when you take into consideration | :21:06. | :21:08.
that England must win if they harbour ambitions of winning the | :21:09. | :21:12.
Championship. Joining me now are two former international is. They are | :21:13. | :21:18.
playing a charity match. -- internationals. Are you confident | :21:19. | :21:23.
that England will win? Not massively confident, but they are improving | :21:24. | :21:30.
and developing. They are getting together young guys that are getting | :21:31. | :21:36.
blooded and they are really impressive. These guys are so | :21:37. | :21:46.
experience, right through the team, it will be a tough battle. If | :21:47. | :21:51.
Ireland are to win, what must they do? As long as they get their basics | :21:52. | :21:59.
right, I believe the back row are better than the English back row and | :22:00. | :22:09.
I think Johnny Sexton has the edge. The defence is a massive thing. | :22:10. | :22:12.
There are a lot of young English guys and this is the first time that | :22:13. | :22:17.
they are playing, Ireland have come back with the confidence they had | :22:18. | :22:22.
against Wales. They have got a few injuries. It will be a test for the | :22:23. | :22:27.
younger players playing in Six Nations. Ireland have the all-round | :22:28. | :22:34.
game to take. You think Ireland will win? I believe so. I am not so sure. | :22:35. | :22:43.
Ireland brings so much experience and if the boys can get Twickenham | :22:44. | :22:49.
to be a fortress, then we have a chance. Thank you. The game is on | :22:50. | :23:01.
BBC Two tomorrow. Golf, and Graeme McDowell is through to the last 16 | :23:02. | :23:06.
of the WGC World Match Play event in Arizona. But Rory McIlroy is already | :23:07. | :23:09.
out of the tournament, after losing on the first play off hole in his | :23:10. | :23:13.
second round match. Thomas Kane reports. Graeme McDowell's qualities | :23:14. | :23:14.
have been showcased over the past two days. Two down after 14 holes, | :23:15. | :23:23.
the Portrush man recovered brilliantly to set up a shoot out on | :23:24. | :23:30.
the 18th hole. Right in the middle. You would have backed him all day | :23:31. | :23:35.
long. He held at this part on the final green to book his place in the | :23:36. | :23:51.
next round. -- ten macro -- putt. That is a chance he has taken. | :23:52. | :23:58.
Coming from behind, Rory McIlroy produced some outstanding shots to | :23:59. | :24:01.
leave him in pole position against Harris English. The club is rapped | :24:02. | :24:15.
over. Level after 18, it all went wrong for the 24-year-old on the | :24:16. | :24:19.
first play-off hole as he exited the competition. There are three matches | :24:20. | :24:24.
in the Danskebank Irish Premiership tonight, with Linfield's visit to | :24:25. | :24:27.
Glentoran the standout game. A win would see Linfield go back to the | :24:28. | :24:31.
top of the table, two points clear of Cliftonville. And, visiting the | :24:32. | :24:34.
Oval for the last time as Linfield boss, David Jeffrey appears to be up | :24:35. | :24:38.
for the challenge of another title charge. There have been some people | :24:39. | :24:47.
who have been doubting my players and the club and making all sorts of | :24:48. | :24:51.
silly statements, this will be a battle I will relish and my players | :24:52. | :24:56.
will relish and we are looking forward to each and every single | :24:57. | :25:01.
game and if we end up being successful, that is fine, but at | :25:02. | :25:08.
this moment in time we are focusing on getting as many points as we can | :25:09. | :25:13.
so that we have a crack at taking the title. The Belfast Giants will | :25:14. | :25:20.
receive the Elite League trophy tonight at the Odyssey. They won the | :25:21. | :25:23.
title last weekend and receive the silverware after the game against | :25:24. | :25:26.
Coventry Blaze. Now here's Cecilia with the weekend weather forecast. | :25:27. | :25:32.
There has been a lot of rain and there have been terrible showers | :25:33. | :25:39.
across Northern Ireland. Severe downpours. That is all to do with | :25:40. | :25:44.
this cloud. That will move away in the next few hours and think should | :25:45. | :25:50.
become a little less wet and we are looking at more cloud and that is | :25:51. | :25:54.
the next area of low pressure which will be moving across the Atlantic | :25:55. | :25:59.
to bring wet and windy weather this weekend. It will not rain all the | :26:00. | :26:05.
time, it will be at its worst on Saturday evening and Sunday morning. | :26:06. | :26:11.
We have a warning for rain as well. There is likely to be flooding over | :26:12. | :26:17.
the weekend in County Fermanagh. Scattered showers, chilly if you are | :26:18. | :26:22.
out because of the breeze, but the breeze will keep temperatures above | :26:23. | :26:26.
freezing. To begin with tomorrow, it is try and the morning will be the | :26:27. | :26:35.
best part of the day. -- drive. The rain is coming in from the west, so | :26:36. | :26:43.
at midday it will still be dry in most areas. The wind will pick up as | :26:44. | :26:51.
well, but it will not feel as cold as it did today, temperatures up to | :26:52. | :26:55.
10 degrees and although it looks wet on the map, the rain will be fairly | :26:56. | :27:02.
sporadic. Still a few dry spells until tomorrow evening. Leading the | :27:03. | :27:06.
damp and cloudy skies in Belfast, moving into the Midlands, the sun is | :27:07. | :27:12.
shining and the temperatures are about 12 degrees. The rain will not | :27:13. | :27:17.
spoil things in the Six Nations match. Back to Northern Ireland, wet | :27:18. | :27:23.
and windy is the name of the game, the winds could get up to 50 mph and | :27:24. | :27:29.
the rain will be heavy and persistent in the West. It is still | :27:30. | :27:33.
wet and windy on Sunday morning, but the winds will ease on Sunday | :27:34. | :27:37.
afternoon. Raining a lot of the time, but not all of the time. Our | :27:38. | :27:41.
late summary is at 10.25. You can also keep in contact with us via | :27:42. | :27:44.
