One, we now join the BBC's news teams where | :00:00. | 3:59:59
Good evening, the headlines on BBC Newsline: A plastic bag holds the | :00:00. | :00:21.
total catch of the day for a Kilkeel trawler. | :00:22. | :00:24.
We hear how our fishermen are facing a perfect storm. I'm live in Kilkeel | :00:25. | :00:33.
speaking to a charity about the crisis on our coasts. | :00:34. | :00:37.
The shutters come down on 200 jobs - now Stormont is told it's time to | :00:38. | :00:41.
help. A family already touched by tragedy | :00:42. | :00:45.
tell how they almost lost another teenager after a night out. My | :00:46. | :00:54.
nephew was coming back to my mind and here we go again. It is because | :00:55. | :01:01.
of cheap drink. Time to play or time to pray - will | :01:02. | :01:05.
the first ever Sunday fixture at Windsor Park see a kick off? | :01:06. | :01:08.
No triple crown or grand slam for Ireland, but it's still all to play | :01:09. | :01:11.
for in the Six Nations. And the wind and rain has arrived to | :01:12. | :01:15.
give us an unsettled evening, but will it improve for tomorrow? I'll | :01:16. | :01:21.
have the details shortly. First this evening, some news just | :01:22. | :01:26.
coming into us. The Belfast Health Trust has brought in more staff to | :01:27. | :01:29.
the Royal Victoria Hospital's Emergency Department because of the | :01:30. | :01:32.
number of people looking for treatment. Our health correspondent | :01:33. | :01:37.
Marie-Louise Connolly joins me now with the latest. What are you | :01:38. | :01:45.
hearing Marie-Louise? I am hearing that the emergency department at the | :01:46. | :01:48.
Royal is packed with patients. These figures have not been confirmed by | :01:49. | :01:55.
the Belfast Health Trust, but a source has told me there are | :01:56. | :02:00.
approximately 29 people waiting on trolleys to be seen and around this | :02:01. | :02:04.
time on a Monday evening that is serious. There are over 100 people | :02:05. | :02:10.
in the general emergency area. A lot of people in that tiny space. There | :02:11. | :02:16.
are trolleys waiting and members of the public who are with their loved | :02:17. | :02:21.
ones. It is extremely busy, and not only in the Royal, but in other | :02:22. | :02:33.
hospitals. Some are operating a policy of diversion, but where do | :02:34. | :02:36.
you divert these patients to when they are all under pressure. We have | :02:37. | :02:41.
heard of a major incident at the Royal before. Is this a major | :02:42. | :02:47.
incident? You boil are not declaring it a major incident yet. Previously | :02:48. | :02:56.
there have been up to 42 people waiting on trolleys, it is currently | :02:57. | :03:04.
29. This proves that the system is not sustainable, even with all the | :03:05. | :03:09.
major incidents, they have not got it right. Staff are not being kept | :03:10. | :03:16.
at a normal level in order to avoid a major incident. So things are | :03:17. | :03:20.
busy, they have been busy since yesterday and it is quite telling | :03:21. | :03:26.
that senior managers are on the floor watching things develop. There | :03:27. | :03:30.
has been a lot of talk about this, but from your point of view, how can | :03:31. | :03:37.
they stop this happening? The system needs to be sustainable. The level | :03:38. | :03:46.
of staff needs to be sustainable. We also need to have seven day working | :03:47. | :03:53.
hospitals, not five days. People get sick all the time. | :03:54. | :03:58.
Fishermen say dozens of their families are having to rely on food | :03:59. | :04:02.
parcels because months of bad weather has forced the fleet to stay | :04:03. | :04:05.
in port. BBC Newsline last week highlighted the difficulties the | :04:06. | :04:08.
fishing industry is facing in Ardglass, Portavogie and Kilkeel. | :04:09. | :04:10.
Now fishermen say they are at breaking point and they have | :04:11. | :04:13.
criticised government for failing to address their plight. Late this | :04:14. | :04:17.
afternoon, the Agriculture Minister Michelle O'Neill said she'll meet | :04:18. | :04:19.
fishermen's groups at Stormont tomorrow. On the quayside at Kilkeel | :04:20. | :04:32.
is our reporter Chris Page. The weather has taken a turn is the | :04:33. | :04:36.
West again, but the most of today there has been a lull from the | :04:37. | :04:40.
stormy conditions, but that relative calm has not brought relief for the | :04:41. | :04:50.
trawlermen here. My colleague Francis Gorman has been speaking to | :04:51. | :04:54.
both those on shore who rely on the fishing industry and those who go | :04:55. | :04:58.
out to sea in search of prawns. This skipper has just arrived back. He | :04:59. | :05:01.
was out at sea before the dawn. Taking his boat out costs over ?200. | :05:02. | :05:09.
His entire hall is in one bag. This is our catch for today. The weather | :05:10. | :05:15.
for the past few months has been atrocious and it has been impossible | :05:16. | :05:23.
to make any money. In bad weather, prawns borrower into the sea bed for | :05:24. | :05:28.
shelter. Today was relatively calm, but not many have surfaced. This | :05:29. | :05:33.
skipper has only been at sea twice this year and now he and others are | :05:34. | :05:40.
having to rely on charity hand-outs. The indignity of having to go on TV | :05:41. | :05:47.
and admit to queueing up for food vouchers. Fisher men are our people. | :05:48. | :05:56.
We need an emergency crisis meeting at storm once and explain how bad it | :05:57. | :06:00.
is and what fishermen can suggest to make it better for next winter. This | :06:01. | :06:08.
fish processor buys the prawns for export. This is all he got today. We | :06:09. | :06:15.
are on shift 20 47. This is devastating. -- on shift 247. It is | :06:16. | :06:26.
sad to see the these strong dignified men looking for a hand-out | :06:27. | :06:33.
from the Fishermen's Mission. They are the only people who seem to | :06:34. | :06:39.
realise there is a crisis here. Fishermen say they are food | :06:40. | :06:42.
producers just like farmers and they think they should be entitled to | :06:43. | :06:45.
subsidies, especially in bad weather. A number of factors | :06:46. | :06:57.
affecting the fishermen. There is bad weather and bad winds. They are | :06:58. | :07:04.
also suffering from a fall in shellfish stocks and fuel costs are | :07:05. | :07:09.
still rising. In that sense, fishermen have a lot of reasons as | :07:10. | :07:14.
to why they have fallen on hard times. The Fishermen's Mission say | :07:15. | :07:25.
that since the weekend they have paid out ?20,000. That comes out of | :07:26. | :07:31.
a total of ?50,000 that have been made available. You can see that the | :07:32. | :07:35.
situation here in Northern Ireland is bad. The Fishermen's Mission and | :07:36. | :07:39.
other members of the fishing community have made an appeal to | :07:40. | :07:45.
storm on. The agricultural Minister has not committed one way or | :07:46. | :07:50.
another, but she has said she will meet representatives of the fishing | :07:51. | :07:54.
industry tomorrow. People will be waiting here to see what happens. | :07:55. | :07:58.
Many families are facing financial hardship. | :07:59. | :08:06.
There were also calls today for politicians to do more to help | :08:07. | :08:09.
people in Dungiven following the collapse of its largest employer. | :08:10. | :08:12.
More than 200 jobs were lost at the utilities company KPL after it was | :08:13. | :08:15.
placed in administration. Our north-west reporter Keiron Tourish | :08:16. | :08:18.
found a town today still trying to come to terms with the news. The | :08:19. | :08:25.
shelters were down on the KPL head office in Dungiven this morning. | :08:26. | :08:30.
Local people were despondent as the full effect of the 200 job losses | :08:31. | :08:40.
became apparent. It is bad enough without losing so many jobs. It is | :08:41. | :08:46.
bad news for the town. People have mortgages and that sort of thing. It | :08:47. | :08:53.
is really bad. The administrators said efforts to save the business | :08:54. | :08:59.
had been unsuccessful. KPL was one of Northern Ireland's leading | :09:00. | :09:04.
utility contract is. It also employed subcontractors who | :09:05. | :09:14.
installed utility lines. Action was now needed to help the area. Places | :09:15. | :09:22.
like Dungiven are dying. They have had years and years of struggle with | :09:23. | :09:30.
factories going. We are told, we are doing all we can, but nothing | :09:31. | :09:38.
happens. Yet we see announcements for things happening in greater | :09:39. | :09:42.
Belfast. It seems that playing field is not level. We need to look at | :09:43. | :09:58.
projects that could bring money into the area. It is time that we all sat | :09:59. | :10:04.
down and discussed this. This family run business said that Dungiven | :10:05. | :10:10.
needed direct intervention from store Montt. Perhaps the bypass will | :10:11. | :10:24.
improve things. -- from storm onto. The government could help small | :10:25. | :10:36.
businesses. For 20 years KPL has been the bedrock of the local | :10:37. | :10:41.
economy. Many now face an uncertain future as they try to secure new | :10:42. | :10:44.
employment. Many of those workers are preparing to meet their bank | :10:45. | :10:51.
this week to discuss the options. The father of a student who ended up | :10:52. | :10:55.
in hospital after a night out says drinks promotions must end. John | :10:56. | :10:58.
Kelly's 19-year-old son drank a bottle and a half of wine and six | :10:59. | :11:02.
shots of tequila at the Box nightclub in the Odyssey in Belfast | :11:03. | :11:05.
last Thursday. His cousin Joby Murphy died in 2012 after a similar | :11:06. | :11:11.
night out. BBC Newsline's Tara Mills has been talking to the father and | :11:12. | :11:19.
son. Two fathers who want an end to | :11:20. | :11:24.
drinks promotions. Joe Murphy's farm died after he felt into the river | :11:25. | :11:29.
following a night out two years ago. His cousin ended up in hospital | :11:30. | :11:33.
after attending a drinks promotion at a nearby club. The 19-year-old | :11:34. | :11:43.
did not want to appear on camera. I drank tequila and a lot of shots. It | :11:44. | :11:50.
only cost me ?20. I should not drink that much. I do take responsibility | :11:51. | :11:59.
for it. Student collapsed outside the nightclub and ended up with | :12:00. | :12:01.
hypothermia. His father said it would have been worse if he was not | :12:02. | :12:08.
taken to hospital when he was. I opened the cubicle door at the | :12:09. | :12:15.
hospital. He had two drips in him - one for blood and one for fluid. He | :12:16. | :12:22.
had a hypothermia blanket on him. He was unconscious. I thought I had | :12:23. | :12:29.
lost him. I thought, here we go again. I don't know what was going | :12:30. | :12:39.
through my mind, I really don't. My nephew's death was coming back to | :12:40. | :12:44.
me. I thought, here we go again. It is because of cheap drink. Drink the | :12:45. | :12:51.
motions are regular here at this nightclub. The student was thrown | :12:52. | :12:56.
out of the club for being too drunk. An ambulance was called as | :12:57. | :13:01.
soon as he was discovered unconscious. We reported the | :13:02. | :13:07.
incident to the Ambulance Service. It has been taken slightly out of | :13:08. | :13:14.
context in terms of the timeline. I am happy that our staff had a duty | :13:15. | :13:19.
of care that night. The Odyssey has had its fair share of publicity. | :13:20. | :13:27.
Those that run the nightclub say they are happy they have all the | :13:28. | :13:29.
adequate safety measures in place. The Northern Ireland football team | :13:30. | :13:36.
are set for their first match on a Sunday at Windsor Park. They will | :13:37. | :13:39.
face Finland in the Euro 2016 qualifiers on the last Sunday in | :13:40. | :13:51.
March next year. Never on a Sunday has an international match taken | :13:52. | :13:55.
place at Windsor Park, but all that is about to change. Finland are due | :13:56. | :14:00.
to play here on Sunday March the 29th next year. But not through one | :14:01. | :14:10.
-- but not everyone is happy, including this former international | :14:11. | :14:18.
player. I would advocate that we should keep Sunday as the Lord's | :14:19. | :14:26.
day. I did play Sunday fixtures when I was on the mainland, but I would | :14:27. | :14:30.
like to keep Sunday as holy as possible. The Irish Football | :14:31. | :14:38.
Association says that dates of matches are now out of their hands. | :14:39. | :14:45.
We will have two live with it the course like every other football | :14:46. | :14:51.
organisation, we are a business and we need money to keep us where we | :14:52. | :14:59.
are. Just down the road from Windsor Park on Sandy Row in south Belfast, | :15:00. | :15:04.
fans gave their view on Sunday for all. I don't agree with it. I | :15:05. | :15:13.
disagree with it. It should be during the week or on Saturday. What | :15:14. | :15:20.
is the difference playing on a Sunday? I think it is a good idea. | :15:21. | :15:26.
It is a day out for the family and Sunday is the new Saturday and in | :15:27. | :15:31.
England and other places, they playful ball on a Sunday. The real | :15:32. | :15:37.
test of public opinion will come in March next year when the match | :15:38. | :15:41.
against Finland takes place. We will see then weather fans support | :15:42. | :15:44.
international full all on a Sunday or not. | :15:45. | :15:55.
The jury has been sworn in in the trial of a 19-year-old County Tyrone | :15:56. | :16:00.
man accused of murdering his father. Sean Hackett is accused of shooting | :16:01. | :16:03.
60-year-old Aloysius Hackett at the family home in Augher in January | :16:04. | :16:08.
last year. He also denies having a firearm and ammunition. | :16:09. | :16:13.
Sinn Fein Policing Board member Gerry Kelly is taking legal action | :16:14. | :16:16.
against the Chief Constable about an incident in which he was carried on | :16:17. | :16:20.
the front of the police Land Rover in Belfast. Both Mr Kelly and the | :16:21. | :16:25.
officer driving excepted informed warnings for their actions at | :16:26. | :16:33.
Carrick Hill in June last year. People living in a rural area on the | :16:34. | :16:37.
outskirts of south Belfast are angry about a plan to build a camping and | :16:38. | :16:42.
caravan park there. A planning application has been made by the | :16:43. | :16:45.
South Eastern Education and Library Board who own the land close to | :16:46. | :16:56.
Shaws Bridge. It is difficult perhaps to see the | :16:57. | :17:02.
potential. In the undergrowth, signs of civilisation. The foundations of | :17:03. | :17:08.
an old school, pulled down around 20 years ago. The site is owned by the | :17:09. | :17:13.
South Eastern Education and Library Board. This site is worth more with | :17:14. | :17:17.
planning permission so four years ago, the board applied for | :17:18. | :17:21.
permission for a camping and caravanning park on this land. The | :17:22. | :17:27.
board themselves say they have no intention of building here. The site | :17:28. | :17:31.
could accommodate 16 caravans and several pitches for tents. When I | :17:32. | :17:37.
was first told about this, I thought they were pulling my leg. What has | :17:38. | :17:41.
that got to do with education? When I spoke to the board, unfortunately | :17:42. | :17:46.
that was correct. They said it was to enhance the value of the site | :17:47. | :17:52.
before they sold it. I query the common-sense in all of this. This is | :17:53. | :17:56.
not a function of the education department. The road adjacent to the | :17:57. | :18:05.
site is better known for traffic snarl ups than as a tourist | :18:06. | :18:10.
destination. The road safety issues are severe. It is a very busy road | :18:11. | :18:16.
and it narrows in both directions. It is hard as he how they would get | :18:17. | :18:21.
in and out safely. Is the problem not that you live nearby? I suppose | :18:22. | :18:28.
a little bit but there are lots of potentials for caravan sites where | :18:29. | :18:33.
there are tourists. Planners say they are minded to give the site | :18:34. | :18:37.
planning permission. The application was discussed for the first time | :18:38. | :18:42.
last month in Lisburn. Opposition is growing and growing. Pages of | :18:43. | :18:47.
signatures and at its centre, a new concern residents group who have | :18:48. | :18:52.
been meeting the planners, roads service and counsellors. This is | :18:53. | :18:56.
just the beginning of the process. As for the South Eastern Education | :18:57. | :18:59.
and Library Board, they say they are still actively trying to dispose of | :19:00. | :19:02.
the land. Ireland's rugby team lost out on | :19:03. | :19:05.
Triple Crown glory at the weekend but a Six Nations championship | :19:06. | :19:08.
victory is still in sight. Gavin Andrews is here. | :19:09. | :19:13.
No Grand Slam this year but Joe Schmidt's side still top the | :19:14. | :19:16.
championship table with two games to play. The likely decider will come | :19:17. | :19:20.
against France in Paris on St Patrick's weekend. It could all have | :19:21. | :19:24.
been so different against England on Saturday. | :19:25. | :19:36.
There was a feel-good factor on Saturday. The English players which | :19:37. | :19:40.
edition and walked the stadium. Their supporters were prepared for | :19:41. | :19:45.
battle but the Irish were full of confidence. Physicality, | :19:46. | :19:53.
determination and intensity that they are in abundance in the first | :19:54. | :19:58.
half, but very little scoring action. This penalty is separated | :19:59. | :20:04.
the sides. The second half started perfectly for the Irish. By the time | :20:05. | :20:15.
Jonny Sexton hit this penalty, most expected Ireland to maintain their | :20:16. | :20:20.
100% winning start to the championship. But they never scored | :20:21. | :20:24.
again on the winning and losing this game came down to this break by Mike | :20:25. | :20:32.
Brown. They sealed a 13-10 win for England. We distort -- we did not | :20:33. | :20:43.
get the rub of the green. It was a game of fine margins and | :20:44. | :20:46.
unfortunately we did not end up on the right side of the result. Grand | :20:47. | :20:52.
Slam aspirations are now extinguished but Ireland can still | :20:53. | :20:58.
win the six Nations. It is still in our hands but we have two big games | :20:59. | :21:02.
still coming up. We had to do the business and we have to look to win | :21:03. | :21:06.
this championship. It was always going to be difficult. We felt we | :21:07. | :21:10.
would give a bottle of winning the Grand Slam. We have to do everything | :21:11. | :21:13.
in our power to get the championship. Ireland could still | :21:14. | :21:16.
get win the battle. Ulster moved up to third in the | :21:17. | :21:22.
Pro12 table after a narrow win in Italy against Treviso yesterday. | :21:23. | :21:25.
Darren Cave scored Ulster's first try of the game, sprinting over | :21:26. | :21:28.
early in the first half. Robbie Diack gave the visitors breathing | :21:29. | :21:32.
space when he charged through the Italians to score just after the | :21:33. | :21:39.
half-time break. Eugene Laverty won the first race of | :21:40. | :21:42.
the World Superbike series in Australia yesterday. He finished | :21:43. | :21:45.
second in last year's title race and was making his debut for a new team, | :21:46. | :21:49.
but it didn't all go according to plan. | :21:50. | :21:54.
Eugene Laverty showed good speed, taking the lead with five laps to | :21:55. | :22:06.
go. Once in front, he stayed there in impressive fashion, claiming a | :22:07. | :22:11.
first win in four years and some 95 races. It is an incredible day for | :22:12. | :22:23.
us. I wanted to get back to winning ways sooner rather than later but to | :22:24. | :22:26.
win in the first race was very unexpected. An incredible day and I | :22:27. | :22:37.
would like to thank the team manager for giving me this opportunity. A | :22:38. | :22:48.
loan engine in the second race put paid to any hope of a double victory | :22:49. | :22:51.
but Eugene Laverty has signalled he will be challenging for the title | :22:52. | :22:54.
once again. Linfield will look to jump back to | :22:55. | :22:57.
the top of the Irish Premiership tonight when they face Glenavon at | :22:58. | :23:01.
Windsor Park. After a 1-0 win at Glentoran on Friday night, the | :23:02. | :23:04.
Blues' lead at the top of the table lasted less than 24 hours. | :23:05. | :23:07.
Cliftonville overtook them, courtesy of this late Stephen Garrett strike | :23:08. | :23:10.
which clinched a 2-1 win over Dungannon Swifts on Saturday | :23:11. | :23:14.
afternoon. Limited will reclaim top spot with a win in their game in | :23:15. | :23:19.
hand. Portadown now lie third in the table after a 3-2 win at Coleraine. | :23:20. | :23:23.
Ballymena's win with the same scoreline over Warrenpoint lifts | :23:24. | :23:31.
them into the top six. Cavan's Aogan O Fearghail will be | :23:32. | :23:35.
the next President of the GAA after he won Friday's vote at the | :23:36. | :23:37.
association's congress in Croke Park. He will take over from Liam | :23:38. | :23:52.
O'Neill after next year's congress. This is the primary school right on | :23:53. | :23:59.
the border. Aogan O Fearghail has been principal here for over 20 | :24:00. | :24:04.
years. He will become the 30th President of the GAA and every | :24:05. | :24:08.
single one of the pupils have come out to congratulate him. How proud | :24:09. | :24:17.
is it for you as a Cavan man but also as a native of this part of the | :24:18. | :24:22.
world to be the next President? I am absolutely thrilled. I came here at | :24:23. | :24:27.
the age of three and I have been teaching here for over 30 years and | :24:28. | :24:32.
I am absolutely delighted. These are my family and friends, my people. | :24:33. | :24:39.
What are your biggest challenges? The GAA is very strong and I suppose | :24:40. | :24:43.
the challenge for President is to maintain its strength and to grow | :24:44. | :24:49.
it. I would hope to lead this fantastic organisation and continue | :24:50. | :24:53.
our work and keep the family atmosphere strong. A lot of focus on | :24:54. | :24:59.
the future of the Railway cup. The players still want it, or do you | :25:00. | :25:06.
feel is the future of this? The players are right to want it, it is | :25:07. | :25:10.
the highest level you can achieve in our sport. Wearing the provincial | :25:11. | :25:14.
jersey is the highest level you can aspire to. There was quite a good | :25:15. | :25:20.
crowd at the weekend but in its current form, the cup has not | :25:21. | :25:24.
ordered. We have to be honest about that. I don't believe it should be | :25:25. | :25:30.
abolished. It is a big challenge and I would like to see it grow. I will | :25:31. | :25:35.
be looking at it immediately. I will talk to a lot of people and see how | :25:36. | :25:40.
we can improve it and restore it to a good competition, which it always | :25:41. | :25:47.
was. We have to seek reasons why the crowds are not coming to it. | :25:48. | :25:51.
Congratulations on your appointment. I have a feeling it is a very, very | :25:52. | :25:56.
popular decision! Congratulations to ards Ladies | :25:57. | :25:59.
hockey team, they won all six of their matches to win the European | :26:00. | :26:10.
Indoor Club Challenge in Budapest. The weather is next. | :26:11. | :26:23.
This rain reaches Northern Ireland later on in the afternoon so a wet | :26:24. | :26:27.
and windy night to come. The rain will clear around my -- midnight. | :26:28. | :26:34.
Where the skies clear, there be some frost developing in 12 areas. For | :26:35. | :26:40.
many places, especially in the north and east tomorrow morning, a dry and | :26:41. | :26:44.
bright start. It will not stay that way for long as we have scattered | :26:45. | :26:49.
showers coming in from the west. The showers coming and going and in | :26:50. | :26:52.
between but being, there will be the odd spell of sunshine. Some of those | :26:53. | :26:56.
insurers could be heavy, possibly with some thunder. Temperatures as a | :26:57. | :27:03.
result, back to normal at seven or eight degrees. In any sunshine away | :27:04. | :27:08.
from the wings, it could be even warmer than that. Tomorrow evening, | :27:09. | :27:15.
largely dry and most of the showers are in the North and West. The | :27:16. | :27:22.
showers will stay with us overnight into Wednesday. Wednesday is going | :27:23. | :27:29.
to begin as a cloudy and damp start. The good news is, as we go through | :27:30. | :27:34.
into the afternoon, it will improve and turn drier and brighter. | :27:35. | :27:41.
Temperatures on Wednesday are eight degrees so they will stay in and | :27:42. | :27:45.
around the average for the time of year. To enjoy the dry weather on | :27:46. | :27:50.
Wednesday because as we go towards the second part of the day, the next | :27:51. | :27:54.
area of low pressure will push in and bring rain with it on Wednesday | :27:55. | :28:00.
night. A very wet night to come. Following that being, it will be a | :28:01. | :28:04.
case of sunny spells and scattered showers on both Thursday and Friday. | :28:05. | :28:14.
Our late summary is at 10:25pm. From BBC Newsline, good night. | :28:15. | :28:15. |
