on the BBC News Channel, we are back with the late news 10:10. | :00:00. | :00:00.
Good evening. A man has appeared in court in | :00:00. | :00:13.
Omagh, charged with the murder of his partner. 36-year-old Mairead | :00:14. | :00:16.
McCallion was found with head injuries at a house in Castleview | :00:17. | :00:19.
Court in the town last Sunday and died the next day. Michael | :00:20. | :00:26.
Fitzpatrick reports. 50-year-old Noel Knox arrived in handcuffs at | :00:27. | :00:30.
the magistrate court this morning, to face a charge of murdering | :00:31. | :00:35.
Mairead McCallion. In the dock he spoke only to confirm that he | :00:36. | :00:40.
understand the charge against him. A detective inspector told the court | :00:41. | :00:42.
police were called to Castleview Court on Sunday morning by the | :00:43. | :00:46.
defendant, because he wanted two people removed from his brother's | :00:47. | :00:49.
house. When police arrived they noticed Mairead McCallion outside | :00:50. | :00:52.
the house, in her socks, and she allearned she had been assaulted by | :00:53. | :00:55.
the defendant, who had grabbed her and struck her head off a wall. | :00:56. | :01:00.
She was taken to a police station, for a medical examination, and was | :01:01. | :01:04.
then brought to another address. The court heard it was then her | :01:05. | :01:07.
condition began to deteriorate, she was brought to hospital, where she | :01:08. | :01:12.
died the following day. The Detective Inspector said the | :01:13. | :01:15.
defendant had denied ever assaulting Mairead McCallion. A defence | :01:16. | :01:21.
solicitor said Mr Knox wanted to express his sincere condolence to | :01:22. | :01:26.
her family. The court heard that Noel Knox and Mairead McCallion had | :01:27. | :01:29.
been in a relationship for seven year, and that she had previously | :01:30. | :01:34.
made complaints to police about him, but these had been withdrawn. A bail | :01:35. | :01:38.
application was refused, and Knox will appear in court again by a | :01:39. | :01:45.
videolink on 25th March. Two people are in police custody | :01:46. | :01:48.
following the death of a man in Coleraine. He died in hospital after | :01:49. | :01:52.
being found outside a flat early this morning. The victim was 46, but | :01:53. | :01:55.
the police haven't released his name yet. Kevin Sharkey reports. Side by | :01:56. | :02:02.
side on a Saturday morning. A busy street and a crime scene. The victim | :02:03. | :02:06.
was found here just before four o'clock this morning, he had head | :02:07. | :02:09.
injuries and was rushed to hospital, but it was too late to save his | :02:10. | :02:12.
life. The police arrested two people, they | :02:13. | :02:15.
are helping with inquiries into how the man was injured shortly before | :02:16. | :02:21.
he died. The apartment block is beside the | :02:22. | :02:24.
old bridge and forensic officers have been carried out detailed | :02:25. | :02:28.
examination, and the police are looking for information. They want | :02:29. | :02:31.
to hear from anyone in this Strand Road area in the early hours of this | :02:32. | :02:35.
morning and noticed anything suspicious. Most of the | :02:36. | :02:38.
investigation is focussing on this ground floor flat. Evidence being | :02:39. | :02:42.
gathered outside the door, and investigations also taking place | :02:43. | :02:45.
inside the building. And across the road, another crime | :02:46. | :02:49.
scene. Running along the banks of the river. People I have been | :02:50. | :02:53.
speaking to have been expressing shock and sadness at this terrible | :02:54. | :02:56.
news. It is not something we expected to wake up to this morning, | :02:57. | :03:00.
and thoughts and prayers go out to the family circle. It will be a | :03:01. | :03:03.
difficult time for them in the next few weeks. The police continue to | :03:04. | :03:08.
question two people about what happened here, investigators are | :03:09. | :03:12.
also continuing their inquiries at the scene. | :03:13. | :03:15.
An 83-year-old man has died in a road crash in County Londonderry. He | :03:16. | :03:20.
was William Stinson from the Foyle area. The accident happened on the | :03:21. | :03:23.
Glenshane Road near Drumahoe, at around 11.15 this morning and | :03:24. | :03:26.
involved two vehicles. A woman was also taken to hospital, but her | :03:27. | :03:29.
injuries are not thought to be life-threatening. | :03:30. | :03:36.
A planned homecoming event in County Donegal tonight for John Downey, who | :03:37. | :03:39.
was charged with murdering four soldiers in the 1982 Hyde Park | :03:40. | :03:42.
bombing, has been cancelled. A judge stopped the case against Mr Downey | :03:43. | :03:46.
last week because the accused had been sent a government letter | :03:47. | :03:49.
telling him, mistakenly, that he was not wanted by police. Supporters had | :03:50. | :03:52.
organised what was billed as a welcome home dance for him. But in a | :03:53. | :03:55.
statement issued through Sinn Fein, Mr Downey has said he's decided to | :03:56. | :03:59.
cancel tonight's event. He's said it was planned as a simple get-together | :04:00. | :04:03.
and he did not want it to be turned into a media circus. | :04:04. | :04:08.
Artefacts worth thousands of pounds have been stolen from the Somme | :04:09. | :04:11.
Heritage Centre in Newtownards. Two men entered the building as paying | :04:12. | :04:14.
customers just before midday and made off with the items. The centre | :04:15. | :04:18.
houses some of the most significant artefacts from the Home Rule era. | :04:19. | :04:28.
These are really rare items of history, Ulster's history, and the | :04:29. | :04:32.
period of time we have them out for is the 100th anniversary of the sort | :04:33. | :04:38.
of 1913, and we had this exhibition, it is called Ireland on the brink, | :04:39. | :04:43.
telling the political strife taking place in Ireland and these were part | :04:44. | :04:45.
of that history and heritage. It is a sad loss to the museum. | :04:46. | :04:51.
The Irish Football Association say they expect Northern Ireland's | :04:52. | :04:54.
friendly match in Cyprus to go ahead next week, after a referee's car was | :04:55. | :04:57.
damaged in a bomb attack near Nicosia yesterday. All First | :04:58. | :05:00.
Division matches in Cyprus this weekend have been postponed. The IFA | :05:01. | :05:03.
Chief Executive Patrick Nelson says they are monitoring developments | :05:04. | :05:10.
ahead of the match on Wednesday. The latest information is that the dints | :05:11. | :05:14.
would have nothing do with international football, and wouldn't | :05:15. | :05:18.
put the game in jeopardy. However, we are being sensible. We are | :05:19. | :05:24.
monitoring developments, we will in touch with the sub yacht FA today. | :05:25. | :05:31.
We are waiting for the Foreign Office to comment on it P after a | :05:32. | :05:37.
promising start it has ended up wet but the good news the rain is not on | :05:38. | :05:41.
for the night. It will clear away again in the next few hours and the | :05:42. | :05:44.
rest of the night will be fairy dry, clear and chilly as the winds start | :05:45. | :05:49.
to ease. There could be a rural frost and ice and fog round. That | :05:50. | :05:54.
won't last two long too long because the next area of rain will move in. | :05:55. | :05:59.
So dry to begin with but cloudy, some patchy rain initially and by | :06:00. | :06:02.
mid-morning more rain is starting to set in across the west. That is | :06:03. | :06:07.
tomorrow's weather front. It will move eastwards across Ireland, north | :06:08. | :06:12.
and south, reaching western areas of Scotland, England and Wales. Not | :06:13. | :06:16.
quite reaching the south-east, and behind it, it brightens up again | :06:17. | :06:20.
across the Republic of Ireland, with the scattering of shower, so | :06:21. | :06:23.
Northern Ireland becoming drier and brighter tomorrow, not that warm, so | :06:24. | :06:27.
any showers that come along could be wintry over the hills. And as we | :06:28. | :06:31.
head into the new week, the mix of sunshine and showers continues, more | :06:32. | :06:35.
unsettled for the second half of the week. | :06:36. | :06:39.
Newsline will be back tomorrow evening at 6.20. Enjoy the rest of | :06:40. | :06:41.
your weekend. Bye. Nowadays we take the issue of | :06:42. | :06:45.
fairness in employment for granted. I have never felt it important | :06:46. | :06:48.
to ask anybody's religion when I'm going to employ them | :06:49. | :06:51.
as a sheet metal worker. This is the story of fair | :06:52. | :06:53.
employment in Northern Ireland. it masked a much greater problem | :06:54. | :06:56.
in terms of educational disadvantage. The Fair Employment Act of 1989 | :06:57. | :07:02.
changed Northern Ireland's society dramatically. | :07:03. | :07:06.
We still have a way to go. | :07:07. | :07:10. |
