It might seem that one life is worth more than another. It's not. It | :00:32. | :00:44.
never will be. The safety warning for owners | :00:45. | :00:46.
of certain tumble dryers - Northern Ireland's air link with | :00:47. | :00:49.

Paddy Jackson for Ireland's After the rain | :00:53. | :00:56.
and strong winds of Storm Doris. Tonight we have a weather | :00:57. | :01:00.
warning for ice. Around 1,000 homes | :01:01. | :01:07.
are still without power, as the Storm Doris clear-up | :01:08. | :01:13.
operation continues this evening. Hundreds of trees were brought down, | :01:14. | :01:16.
and flights and ferries experienced Storm Doris arrived early sleeping | :01:17. | :01:34.
in from the West leaving a trail of destruction. It hit eastern counties | :01:35. | :01:40.
around rush hour. In Belfast, major roads were blocked by fallen trees. | :01:41. | :01:45.
High winds uprooted hundreds of trees across Northern Ireland. Not | :01:46. | :01:50.
even the dark ages in County Antrim, made famous by Game Of Thrones | :01:51. | :01:59.
escaped. Flights, trains, ferry services all faced disruption as the | :02:00. | :02:06.
winds peaked. A top speed of over 100 mph was recorded on the south | :02:07. | :02:10.
coast. The worst of the storm passed through by late morning but the | :02:11. | :02:14.
clear up operation has taken most of the day. This team of tree surgeons | :02:15. | :02:20.
has removed 30 trees in Belfast alone. Most of the fallen trees were | :02:21. | :02:26.
weakened by disease or fungus. The tree is really quite a spongy, | :02:27. | :02:31.
falling apart. There is no strength to it. Everything we've dealt with | :02:32. | :02:36.
has been structurally defective or the tree has been attacked by a | :02:37. | :02:42.
pathogen, leading to decay and therefore the tree has been weak. | :02:43. | :02:47.
Disruption as well to electricity supplies. The vast majority have now | :02:48. | :02:54.
been restored with crews working from first thing this morning in | :02:55. | :02:58.
difficult conditions. Access can be a problem where we have debris lying | :02:59. | :03:04.
on roads. It is getting the equipment onto the ground. The | :03:05. | :03:09.
ground is very damp with some flooding so we have to be careful. | :03:10. | :03:14.
We have to be mindful of health and safety. It does take time to get | :03:15. | :03:18.
crews onto the ground to carry out repairs. Storm Doris may have left | :03:19. | :03:24.
but there is another weather warning for tomorrow morning. This time for | :03:25. | :03:32.
ice. Winter is not over yet. We will have a full forecast later in the | :03:33. | :03:33.
programme. A 63-year-old man struck | :03:34. | :03:34.
by an empty van in Larne as he was withdrawing money | :03:35. | :03:36.
from an ATM, has died. Our north east reporter Sara Girvin | :03:37. | :03:39.
has been to the scene. The man was using this ATM just | :03:40. | :03:50.
before 8:30am yesterday morning when he was hit by a van. The vehicle had | :03:51. | :03:55.
been parked on Main Street but it rolled backwards and struck him. He | :03:56. | :04:00.
was taken to husband with a suspected fractured leg but died | :04:01. | :04:03.
this morning. Robert Reid was working in the butchers next door | :04:04. | :04:10.
when it happened. I heard a man screaming in pain. We went to see | :04:11. | :04:15.
what was happening. They few other people from cars outside the shop | :04:16. | :04:19.
had run to his help. We then phoned for an ambulance. People are shocked | :04:20. | :04:25.
that somebody could be knocked down and buy the next day. It's horrible. | :04:26. | :04:32.
Police have asked anyone who saw a blue Vauxhall van parked here on | :04:33. | :04:35.
Main Street yesterday morning or who witnessed the incident themselves to | :04:36. | :04:38.
get in touch. The DUP MP Jim Shannon | :04:39. | :04:41.
has cried in the House of Commons during a debate | :04:42. | :04:43.
about the prosecution of security The Strangford MP says victims | :04:44. | :04:48.
of the Troubles want "closure and justice" and he referred | :04:49. | :04:55.
to the death of his cousin murdered by the IRA - | :04:56. | :04:58.
and members of the UDR Here's our Political | :04:59. | :05:00.
Correspondent Stephen Walker. UDR man Kenneth Smith was murdered | :05:01. | :05:10.
by the IRA back in 1971. Today his cousin Jim Shannon recalled his | :05:11. | :05:14.
death and the killing of his friends in April 19 90. I want justice for | :05:15. | :05:21.
the four UDR men. I knew three of them personally. And yet there is no | :05:22. | :05:27.
multi-million pound investigation available for that. There seems to | :05:28. | :05:34.
be more in the present this idea that one life is worth more than | :05:35. | :05:38.
another. It is not and it will never be. | :05:39. | :05:53.
Ian Paisley MP said that Baron McGrory should not take part in any | :05:54. | :05:59.
investigation because of his previously is. He should resign now. | :06:00. | :06:07.
I don't agree. The public prosecution service has pursued | :06:08. | :06:13.
prosecutions for serious terrorist crimes during the troubles and | :06:14. | :06:18.
continues to do so. Sir Gerald Howarth also claimed that the DPP | :06:19. | :06:21.
was trying to stop journalists reporting his work. The DPP has | :06:22. | :06:29.
issued an effective fatwa to news organisations across the United | :06:30. | :06:34.
Kingdom that if they have the temerity to make any criticism of Mr | :06:35. | :06:43.
O'Gara, Mr McCrory, that they will be served with legal proceedings. A | :06:44. | :06:51.
public prosecution service statement said... | :06:52. | :07:03.
This debate was called by the DUP who believe too much focus has been | :07:04. | :07:09.
given to the prosecution of eggs security force members compared to | :07:10. | :07:16.
former paramilitaries but this month, figures obtained by the BBC | :07:17. | :07:20.
has shown that investigations into killings by the Army account for | :07:21. | :07:25.
about 30% of its legacy workload. We must ensure that there is fairness | :07:26. | :07:29.
and balance in all of this. The Catholic Bishop of Derry has | :07:30. | :07:34.
offered to meet the bombers who tried to kill a police officer | :07:35. | :07:36.
at his home in Culmore. The bomb exploded while the army | :07:37. | :07:40.
was trying to make it safe. A neighbour of the officer | :07:41. | :07:43.
says many young children Here's our North-West | :07:44. | :07:45.
reporter, Keiron Tourish. At first glance, it looks like any | :07:46. | :07:56.
residential area but the damage on the tarmac reveals how close this | :07:57. | :08:00.
bomb was to the family home of a police officer. The PS and I say | :08:01. | :08:07.
this attack could have resulted in death or serious injury. Earlier, a | :08:08. | :08:12.
team of friends in offices was back at the scene. They covered a wide | :08:13. | :08:17.
area in search of fragments from the Bomb. Neighbours who, like the | :08:18. | :08:29.
policeman, had young children in the house were appalled at the attack. | :08:30. | :08:33.
We were looking after the grandchildren while their parents | :08:34. | :08:36.
worked and they were here. Their lives were put at risk and all the | :08:37. | :08:43.
children in the area. Their lives are disrupted. Everybody's is. It's | :08:44. | :08:48.
inconvenient and it's a disgrace and I feel for the poor family involved. | :08:49. | :08:53.
They've lived here about 15 years. I'm angry because they put everybody | :08:54. | :08:56.
at risk, not just the people targeted. I think an attack on any | :08:57. | :09:04.
police officer is an attack on all police officers regardless of what | :09:05. | :09:07.
their background is. I think we nearly -- need to take the message | :09:08. | :09:17.
seriously that we need to get behind the police service. The Bishop of | :09:18. | :09:29.
Derry said that they would not be deflected by the bombers. It was | :09:30. | :09:34.
reckless and where people could have been badly injured to do what they | :09:35. | :09:40.
have done is outrageous. It's a very dangerous weapon used in a heavily | :09:41. | :09:45.
built-up area with children and adults of all ages. It's very | :09:46. | :09:50.
irresponsible. I'd love to meet with them and show them there is a better | :09:51. | :09:57.
way to a better society. To use this weapon in this built-up area or | :09:58. | :10:00.
anywhere else is not part of the way forward. Police will be studying | :10:01. | :10:05.
CCTV images in an attempt to track down the bombers. | :10:06. | :10:09.
First Trust Bank says its decision to close half its branches is due | :10:10. | :10:12.
Around 130 staff will be made redundant when the bank closes 15 | :10:13. | :10:31.
Five years ago First trust had a network of 40 branches. It will be | :10:32. | :10:46.
soon down to just two. Branch usage has fallen by 40%. Mobile app usage | :10:47. | :10:52.
has increased and we have two responded to those changes. We have | :10:53. | :10:56.
carried out a strategic review of our business over the last 18 months | :10:57. | :11:00.
to come up with a sustainable strategy for the future. The bank is | :11:01. | :11:08.
closing for branches in Belfast. The other closures are in Antrim, | :11:09. | :11:12.
Armagh, Banbridge, Cookstown, president link, Derry, Downpatrick, | :11:13. | :11:23.
Newtownards, Portadown and Strabane. Outside this branch, disappointment | :11:24. | :11:28.
among customers. It's really bad. Sad. It's a nice branch to go into. | :11:29. | :11:35.
Sad for those boys working in it. It's capitalism at its work. It's | :11:36. | :11:41.
disappointing because it's handy. The bank says it is investing in | :11:42. | :11:46.
mobile and online products, an area in which it has lagged behind but it | :11:47. | :11:52.
does. It has also announced a partnership with the Post Office to | :11:53. | :11:55.
allow customers to do some banking there. But a spokesman said that | :11:56. | :12:01.
this couldn't replace fully a branch. A lot of customers haven't | :12:02. | :12:07.
migrated to digital banking. There is the author of the post office and | :12:08. | :12:13.
available but that is just for processing cash. They can't provide | :12:14. | :12:19.
independent financial advice. This is not just an issue for First | :12:20. | :12:22.
trust. All the banks have been closing branches. In fact, since | :12:23. | :12:29.
2010, one in three branches has closed. That's a trend that would be | :12:30. | :12:31.
reversed. A hearing has been continuing | :12:32. | :12:32.
at the High Court into the Economy Minister's plan | :12:33. | :12:35.
to publish the names More than 500 recipients | :12:36. | :12:37.
of the controversial subsidy are involved in a High Court | :12:38. | :12:42.
challenge against Simon Hamilton. The renewable heat Association | :12:43. | :12:55.
claims the ministers plan was to divert attention from ministerial | :12:56. | :12:59.
responsibility for the scheme. A lawyer for the minister said that | :13:00. | :13:02.
there is no evidential basis for Simon Hamilton to be acting | :13:03. | :13:10.
capriciously. He said the minister acted in the interests of | :13:11. | :13:16.
accountability and transparency. An investigation was told about the | :13:17. | :13:24.
financial consequences. The repercussions were seismic and the | :13:25. | :13:28.
fallout so grave that a public enquiry had to be established. The | :13:29. | :13:35.
court heard that the scheme had overspent costing taxpayers almost | :13:36. | :13:40.
half a billion pounds. The hearing was also told that any media | :13:41. | :13:45.
publishing confidential details were at risk of committing contempt of | :13:46. | :13:49.
court. A judgment is expected next week. | :13:50. | :13:53.
Do you have a Creda, Hotpoint or Indesit tumble dryer? | :13:54. | :13:55.
Have you checked to see if it is safe to use? | :13:56. | :14:06.
Whirlpool, which manufactures the dryers has now advised millions | :14:07. | :14:09.
of owners to unplug their machines and not to use them | :14:10. | :14:12.
if they are listed as one of the faulty models. | :14:13. | :14:15.
Our reporter Ita Dungan has been looking at exactly what you need | :14:16. | :14:17.
to do to make sure your home is safe. | :14:18. | :14:19.
It was a tumble dryer waiting to be repaired that caused this fire at a | :14:20. | :14:30.
London tower block in August. People were assured their drivers were | :14:31. | :14:34.
still safe to use as long as they were supervised. The guidance has | :14:35. | :14:39.
now changed. Following advice from trading standards, the advice is | :14:40. | :14:42.
now... What machines are affected? Creda, | :14:43. | :14:59.
Indesit, and Hotpoint dries fought between 2004 and 2015 could have the | :15:00. | :15:05.
dangers fault. You need to check the back for the serial number and then | :15:06. | :15:12.
go on to the Whirlpool website. You need your model number and serial | :15:13. | :15:16.
number and the website will tell you whether you're machine is faulty. If | :15:17. | :15:22.
it is, the advice is, don't use it until it has been repaired. You | :15:23. | :15:27.
might be waiting to five months for someone to come and repair it. This | :15:28. | :15:32.
Belfast woman wasn't happy with the service. They told me to supervise | :15:33. | :15:40.
it. It's in the garage which isn't realistic. I tended not to use it. | :15:41. | :15:46.
They told me to pay my own money to buy another one. I may think I | :15:47. | :15:51.
should get a free one. The advice is don't be tempted to use it. Doing | :15:52. | :15:58.
the kids school uniforms on Sunday night, don't do it. If it goes on | :15:59. | :16:03.
fire, you are not covered by house insurance and could be liable for | :16:04. | :16:08.
costs. Do the checks to ensure it is safe. Good advice. | :16:09. | :16:12.
Northern Ireland's air link with the US is on its way back, | :16:13. | :16:15.
with a new carrier promising low fares to airports near | :16:16. | :16:18.
Norwegian Air has also announced it'll operate from Dublin and Cork. | :16:19. | :16:25.
There's a boost too for City of Derry Airport, | :16:26. | :16:27.
as our business correspondent Julian O'Neill explains. | :16:28. | :16:31.
A new Boeing aircraft will soon be flying under the colours of | :16:32. | :16:39.
Norwegian air from Belfast International. Five services per | :16:40. | :16:44.
week begin in July with the low-cost operator using smaller regional | :16:45. | :16:48.
airports about 60 miles from Boston and New York. I am very happy that | :16:49. | :16:55.
we can continue the services into the US will stop Belfast definitely | :16:56. | :17:01.
needs services into the US. So after losing United, the airport is buoyed | :17:02. | :17:10.
up by a new connection. United had complained about profitability but | :17:11. | :17:15.
it left an opportunity. United weren't able to export the gap in | :17:16. | :17:20.
the market. These guys, low-cost, high-quality with the right aircraft | :17:21. | :17:25.
and right routes. City of Derry airport is now getting a lift as | :17:26. | :17:37.
well. A ?4 million of governments as -- government subsidy has allowed a | :17:38. | :17:39.
new operator to take over from Ryanair. It will unable to get a | :17:40. | :17:50.
full day of business in the capital. We're very optimistic the future. | :17:51. | :17:57.
All of these routes are getting financial help of varying degrees. | :17:58. | :18:01.
It will give them a start but perhaps the harder part is making | :18:02. | :18:03.
the services stand the test of time. With the prospect of Brexit | :18:04. | :18:08.
being triggered next month, it's still unclear if the rights | :18:09. | :18:10.
of the many EU migrants who have Donna Traynor was at a conference | :18:11. | :18:14.
in Dungannon where Brexit The Prime Minister says the UK would | :18:15. | :18:26.
be poorer and public services weaker without the contribution of EU | :18:27. | :18:33.
workers. This conference is organised by the stronger together | :18:34. | :18:38.
network that killed links with communities across Europe. Lena, you | :18:39. | :18:44.
are from Lithuania and have worked a long time in Northern Ireland. What | :18:45. | :18:48.
is the greatest fear of Eastern European people with Brexit | :18:49. | :18:56.
approaching? The fear is what will be tomorrow. Some politicians | :18:57. | :19:05.
attitude and position to migrants is not very nice. People feel confused | :19:06. | :19:13.
and not very safe. Thank you. Bernadette, one of the organisers of | :19:14. | :19:17.
the conference. What do you think the government needs to do as it | :19:18. | :19:23.
enters into negotiations with the EU? The conversation around what is | :19:24. | :19:30.
not going to happen when we are not in the EU should be a conversation | :19:31. | :19:35.
about how we ensure that inside or out, now we are going to be out, | :19:36. | :19:40.
people's human rights are strongly protected, or more strongly | :19:41. | :19:45.
protected, in a post Brexit United Kingdom than they are currently. Do | :19:46. | :19:51.
you think the fear is being exaggerated? No. The context is | :19:52. | :20:00.
happening in a world where the very idea of human rights and the | :20:01. | :20:04.
practice and exercise of human rights for all human beings is being | :20:05. | :20:08.
challenged. It's particularly important for others in the context | :20:09. | :20:13.
of the border. All the conversations around the border have been around | :20:14. | :20:21.
more or less security, criminality, and trade. But there's been very | :20:22. | :20:26.
little around the rights of freedom of movement, except in the Common | :20:27. | :20:32.
travel area which only applies to people who are citizens of the UK | :20:33. | :20:38.
and the Irish Republic. Thank you very much indeed. I have no doubt | :20:39. | :20:42.
that all of the issues will be discussed in the weeks that follow. | :20:43. | :20:49.
If you are an EU worker who has set up home in Northern Ireland, we'd | :20:50. | :20:55.
like you to share your thoughts on our Facebook page. | :20:56. | :20:57.

A storm brewing at the team hotel this morning and it wasn't called | :21:09. | :21:16.
Doris. Until lunchtime, the possible names were Jackson or Sexton. The | :21:17. | :21:20.
latter eventually got the call at outside half as Joe Schmidt | :21:21. | :21:24.
weathered questions as to why he chose the 31-year-old. Fitness is | :21:25. | :21:31.
never really an issue for Johnny. It is making sure he is fully fit. He | :21:32. | :21:37.
certainly is. He trained well today and on Tuesday. As expected, he's | :21:38. | :21:41.
highly motivated to get into the game on Saturday. After recovering | :21:42. | :21:48.
from a stomach bug, Captain Rory Best is reinstated at hooker with | :21:49. | :21:56.
Andrew Trimble and Henderson joining him on the bench which could have a | :21:57. | :21:57.
big say on match day. It's been a busy 24 hours. We | :21:58. | :22:15.
wouldn't have it any other way. You would think we were out of the woods | :22:16. | :22:22.
now as Doris has crossed across into the North Sea off to bother Belgium | :22:23. | :22:28.
and Holland. As the storm developed, it became deep enough to be | :22:29. | :22:33.
described as a weather bomb. We saw the strongest gust of 71 mph. This | :22:34. | :22:39.
evening, we've got another problem. This time it is nice. Clearing skies | :22:40. | :22:45.
after earlier rain and with Worcester in the atmosphere and | :22:46. | :22:48.
rapidly dropping temperatures and the breeze starting to ease off, | :22:49. | :22:53.
