. Good evening and welcome to BBC Points West.

:00:10.:00:12.

Our headlines tonight: Plans to take methane out of the

:00:12.:00:15.

Mendips, but campaigners say look what can happen if the gas leaks

:00:15.:00:21.

into the water supply. Fears for missing William, another

:00:21.:00:25.

student disappears after a night out.

:00:25.:00:30.

A series of police drugs raids in Swindon today.

:00:30.:00:33.

And a "didgeridoo" of a row, after art gallery bosses walk out over

:00:33.:00:43.
:00:43.:00:46.

plans to showcase work from the Hello. Plans are being put forward

:00:46.:00:50.

to drill for natural gas in the Mendip Hills. A company hopes to

:00:50.:00:53.

extract methane from deep in the earth in Somerset which could be

:00:53.:00:57.

used to power homes and create hundreds of jobs. The practice

:00:57.:01:00.

known as "fracking" is widely used in America, but is proving

:01:00.:01:02.

controversial and the proposals here have already run into problems

:01:02.:01:05.

too with campaigners warning the drilling could prove dangerous and

:01:05.:01:15.
:01:15.:01:17.

threaten water supplies. John Even on a day like today the

:01:17.:01:21.

Mendips offer spectacular views from the Bristol Channel to

:01:21.:01:25.

Dorset's Jurassic coast. The hills provide water, tourism, farming,

:01:25.:01:32.

but could they provide so much more? A huge gas supply?

:01:32.:01:39.

The company UK Methane wants to sink test holes across 564

:01:39.:01:44.

kilometres of Somerset in search of gas that it would access through

:01:44.:01:54.
:01:54.:01:55.

fracking. So what is fracking? Well, its full name is hydraulic

:01:55.:02:01.

fracturing. Bores drill down 9,000 feet to access the gas. Explosions

:02:01.:02:05.

strip the rock and water, sand and other chemical are pumped in to

:02:05.:02:09.

release the gas. And my concern is that any activity,

:02:09.:02:13.

is going to come back and through the caves and pollute the water and

:02:13.:02:18.

out into the atmosphere. Explosives expert, Nigel Taylor

:02:18.:02:24.

says the geology in the Mendips is just too unstable to handle process.

:02:24.:02:29.

The fracking will damage the limestone and the gases will expand

:02:29.:02:32.

out through the rocks. These gases will come out and

:02:32.:02:36.

pollute the water supplies and the area. It is not to be treated

:02:36.:02:40.

lightly. We must get the checks and balances in place before

:02:40.:02:48.

permissions are given. In America, there are claims that

:02:48.:02:52.

the methane can leak into the domestic water supply with alarming

:02:52.:03:02.
:03:02.:03:04.

And in Lancashire, drilling has stopped for an investigation after

:03:04.:03:09.

two small earthquakes occurred in recent months. The company mined

:03:09.:03:15.

the Somerset plans says its work is approved by the Government and is

:03:15.:03:18.

tightly controlled. I know there has been a lot of

:03:18.:03:23.

controversy over fracking, but if you go by the Government Select

:03:23.:03:26.

Committee's report and the Environment Agency comments, then

:03:26.:03:30.

it is quite safe and this is all very, very strictly governed. We

:03:30.:03:36.

wouldn't be able to do do anything that was not safe.

:03:37.:03:42.

If fracking comes here, UK Methane says thousands of jobs will be

:03:42.:03:46.

created and the the gasworks could be concealed underground. Right now,

:03:46.:03:51.

there are more questions than answers. Crucially, is there gas in

:03:51.:04:01.
:04:01.:04:02.

the hills in the the first place? Friends and family of a Bristol

:04:02.:04:04.

student, who has now been missing for four days, say they're

:04:05.:04:07.

extremely concerned for his safety. 19-year-old William Appleby was

:04:07.:04:12.

last seen inside a nightclub in the early hours of Sunday morning.

:04:12.:04:16.

Laura Lyon is in St Philips for us now. Laura, what's the latest

:04:16.:04:26.
:04:26.:04:27.

Well, David, this is Motion Nightclub and on Saturday night

:04:27.:04:31.

there were 1700 people out here enjoying themselves. Among them was

:04:31.:04:34.

William Appleby with his group of friends. They were celebrating the

:04:34.:04:37.

end of their first year at university. We are told it wasn't a

:04:38.:04:42.

wild night out, but we know that William had been drinking. None of

:04:42.:04:46.

his friends saw him leave the club and it was later on Sunday that the

:04:46.:04:50.

alarm was raised. A a keen skateboarder, William

:04:50.:04:55.

Appleby and his friends regularly go to Motion Nightclub in Bristol.

:04:55.:04:58.

The club has a skate park inside and is busy on Saturday nights. He

:04:58.:05:04.

is a student at UWE studying for a media degree and he and his friends

:05:04.:05:08.

were relaxing before starting their summer break. They saw him inside

:05:08.:05:13.

the club at around 2.30 am. Usually after nights out, he would

:05:13.:05:17.

be the first one awake. He would be knocking on our doors trying to get

:05:17.:05:23.

us up and stuff. For him to go the opposite and not be about is out of

:05:23.:05:26.

character. Avon and Somerset Police say his

:05:26.:05:31.

mobile phone was in use at 3.30 am. We know Will had been drinking with

:05:31.:05:35.

his friends. It wasn't unusual for Will to leave the nightclub by

:05:35.:05:38.

himself and his friends who tried to text him were not concerned at

:05:38.:05:43.

the time, but it wasn't until the following morning that Will wasn't

:05:43.:05:47.

at their accommodation that they raised the alarm and we were aware

:05:47.:05:53.

and we started the investigation. William's family family contacted

:05:53.:05:58.

police after he failed to catch a bus. In the back of their minds

:05:58.:06:02.

students like James Bubear and Casper Flagg who died in Bath after

:06:02.:06:08.

after nights out. Although term has finished at UWE. The university is

:06:08.:06:12.

advising students to be careful. We have a clear message around that

:06:12.:06:17.

which is about, if it feels unsafe then you know, think twice about it.

:06:17.:06:25.

So we encourage our our to go in -- students to go in pairs and you

:06:25.:06:29.

know, we hope that is what they do. For now, William's family and

:06:29.:06:34.

friends are hoping the police appeal and a Facebook campaign will

:06:34.:06:42.

help jog people's memories and they Well, Avon and Somerset Police say

:06:42.:06:45.

they want to hear from anyone that was inside the club and might have

:06:45.:06:49.

seen William on his way home. It is likely he headed back to the city

:06:49.:06:55.

as that's where his student residence is. This evening missing

:06:55.:06:59.

posters are going up around Park Street and the city centre hoping

:06:59.:07:03.

to jog people's attention. William's family, his twin brother

:07:03.:07:07.

and parents were due to be going on holiday on Friday. Instead they are

:07:07.:07:15.

making plans to come to Bristol to Let's hope for good news soon.

:07:15.:07:18.

Heroin and crack dealers were the target in Swindon early this

:07:18.:07:20.

morningas police mounted the biggest operation of its kind in

:07:20.:07:24.

the town for ten years. It follows a rise in violent crime in the last

:07:24.:07:34.
:07:34.:07:36.

year linked to street dealing. A door opens on Swindon's illegal

:07:36.:07:42.

and violent Class A drugs trade. This, one of 16, suspected dealers

:07:43.:07:47.

targeted by 130 police officers. They have to break in quickly using

:07:47.:07:54.

what they call the big red key. It creates a shock for them, but

:07:54.:07:58.

also they will get rid of evidence. They will flush it or they will

:07:58.:08:01.

swallow it. They will try and distribute it to other people in

:08:01.:08:05.

the house. At this home, hours of searching.

:08:05.:08:11.

Officers find a set of weighing scales. An estimated 6,000 in this

:08:11.:08:16.

bundle. Then bags buried in the garden.

:08:16.:08:20.

A lot of dealers bury their drugs because they are not in the house.

:08:20.:08:24.

Operation was launched after a series of stabbings in Swindon

:08:24.:08:27.

linked to street drug dealing. It is known that dealers from London,

:08:27.:08:32.

Reading and Birmingham are now targeting the town. On this estate,

:08:33.:08:36.

neighbours were glad something is being done.

:08:36.:08:40.

It should make life safer for everybody, shouldn't it and less

:08:40.:08:46.

hassle. Normal Syringes and with three

:08:47.:08:51.

young kids, it is worrying. I don't think they get stiff enough

:08:51.:08:56.

penalties to be honest with you. You know, if you don't really stamp

:08:56.:09:03.

down on them as Nick just said, the next one will come along.

:09:03.:09:07.

Officers admit they will only disrupt drugs trading for 24 hours.

:09:07.:09:11.

Soon someone else will be supplying, but they say it is worth of months

:09:11.:09:14.

of surveillance. This case isn't just about drugs

:09:14.:09:18.

supply, it is about reducing violence with drugs supply and I

:09:18.:09:21.

think that is going to have a significant impact because the

:09:21.:09:25.

people we've gone after are the people that we have got that cause

:09:25.:09:29.

people's lives a misery. 14 arrests were made including one

:09:29.:09:33.

in London and two of inmates already doing time at Bristol

:09:33.:09:42.

Well, you are watching BBC Points West.

:09:42.:09:47.

It is a rather grey Wednesday, but stay with us as there is more,

:09:47.:09:51.

including: 25 years on, find out how plans for

:09:52.:09:55.

a science park are becoming a reality.

:09:55.:10:05.
:10:05.:10:05.

We meet the boxer called Bang Bang Blackwell.

:10:05.:10:09.

Stay with us. Last year, more than 1,300 elderly

:10:09.:10:14.

people in the West were reported as abused, neglected or swindled. The

:10:14.:10:17.

BBC has obtained the figures from local authorities who are trying to

:10:17.:10:20.

highlight the issue. Here's our Health Correspondent, Matthew Hill,

:10:20.:10:29.

Today has been dubbed national Elder Abuse Dayand to give you an

:10:29.:10:32.

indication of how widespread the problem is here in the West, we've

:10:32.:10:36.

been number crunching all the figures from local councils.

:10:36.:10:39.

Overall there were 1,306 reports of safeguarding concerns for the over

:10:39.:10:44.

65s to local authorities in the last year. More than half were

:10:44.:10:52.

found to be true. 594 of them were categorised as Physical abuse. 402

:10:52.:10:56.

were financial and 342 were about neglect. We've all been shocked by

:10:56.:10:59.

the cases of abuse of elderly people in our care homes, most

:10:59.:11:03.

recently at the hands of nurse manager, Rachel Baker. She is

:11:03.:11:06.

serving ten years after the manslaughter of an elderly resident

:11:06.:11:10.

at Parkfields Care home in Somerset. Concerns have also been raised

:11:10.:11:13.

about a number of homes run by Mimosa Health Care in Bristol

:11:13.:11:17.

including worries about the alleged neglect of a patient. They have

:11:17.:11:21.

been told to improve by the regulator or face legal action. Now

:11:21.:11:24.

we also have data from Bristol City Council revealed under the Freedom

:11:24.:11:27.

of Information Act which shows that last year 654 vulnerable adults

:11:27.:11:29.

were referred to Social Services because of suspected abuse, but

:11:29.:11:38.

there was not a single serious case review. That's something which

:11:38.:11:44.

review. That's something which concerns the charity, Elder Abuse.

:11:44.:11:51.

That's a concerning statistic for Action on Eld abuse. Within child

:11:51.:11:59.

pro tux, serious case reviews are are mandatory.

:11:59.:12:04.

But we are concerned out of that many referrals, there hasn't been a

:12:04.:12:08.

Serious Case Review because serious case reviews are about learning

:12:08.:12:11.

lessons and ensuring there is better protection for other older

:12:11.:12:14.

people. Bristol City Council says there

:12:14.:12:17.

would only be a serious case review if there was a death caused by

:12:17.:12:20.

institutional failure, but one thing all parties do agree on is

:12:20.:12:23.

the need for people report concerns to councils and if that abuse could

:12:23.:12:26.

be life threatening then the police should also be involved and on this

:12:27.:12:36.
:12:37.:12:38.

day, all believe more must be done A man has been jailed for two years

:12:38.:12:41.

for his part in the violence in the Stokes Croft area of Bristol

:12:41.:12:44.

earlier this year. Steven Farthing, who is 32, was charged with violent

:12:45.:12:49.

disorder, burglary and possessing cannabis. So far 60 people have

:12:49.:12:54.

been arrested in connection with the protests in April.

:12:54.:12:57.

The Bristol DJ Roni Size was back in court today to challenge claims

:12:57.:13:01.

by his former girlfriend that he threw her down the stairs of his

:13:01.:13:05.

home in a jealous rage. 32-year-old Jane Andrews claims the musician

:13:05.:13:13.

caused her to shatter her heel when he pushed her during an argument.

:13:13.:13:16.

He denies grievous bodily harm and says she fell during a row. The

:13:16.:13:21.

case at Bristol Crown Court continues.

:13:21.:13:25.

A Wiltshire MP has called for a new Bank Holiday to be created to

:13:25.:13:28.

remember the armed forces. Claire Perry, who represents Devizes,

:13:28.:13:31.

today asked Parliament to make the Monday after Remembrance Day an

:13:31.:13:34.

official public holiday. She says it would be the best way of

:13:34.:13:44.
:13:44.:13:47.

bringing people together to support the military. A big celebration was

:13:47.:13:52.

held today at the Bristol and Bath Bath Science Park. Developers and

:13:52.:13:57.

the three universities behind the scheme say the park will bring

:13:57.:14:05.

6,000 hi-tech jobs into the region. The Bristol, and Bath region is a

:14:05.:14:10.

very, very strong region economically and we are one of the

:14:10.:14:13.

only science city that is doesn't have a science park and we have

:14:13.:14:16.

needed one for a long time. These events are always a big deal

:14:16.:14:22.

when a big construction project comes to an en. Scientists and

:14:22.:14:29.

industrialists waited 25 years for this moment.

:14:29.:14:38.

He. A guided tour for the physicist who has been dreaming of this place

:14:38.:14:41.

since 1987. It is wonderful to see the flesh on

:14:41.:14:45.

the bare bones on what I have been working on for many years.

:14:46.:14:52.

Soon this room will be filled with brand-new hi-tech companies. The

:14:52.:14:54.

decades of delay cost the West Country dear.

:14:54.:14:58.

We have lost a lot of our industrial strength. We need to

:14:58.:15:00.

have new industries and have employment for local people, but

:15:00.:15:09.

also for the bright people people at the three three academic

:15:09.:15:14.

institutions who migrate, often going overseas for employment.

:15:14.:15:17.

This is the kind of company they are looking for.

:15:17.:15:23.

This is some exciting data coming from our first patients in our

:15:23.:15:28.

second trial for multiple sclerosis. It takes year to to develop a

:15:28.:15:31.

treatment like there, but if they are right, they will change the

:15:31.:15:35.

lives of MS sufferers and make money and employ a lot of people.

:15:35.:15:38.

To get there, they don't only need science, they need investment.

:15:38.:15:46.

Recently they raised 10 million euros, if the company is anymore

:15:46.:15:48.

successful, it will be too big for the university.

:15:48.:15:52.

We have grown from two people and we have now got 28 people working

:15:52.:15:55.

for the company. As you continue to grow, you have got to have space to

:15:55.:16:00.

do that in and clearly that needs to be in something like the science

:16:00.:16:05.

park. It is not just small companies

:16:05.:16:13.

coming to the park, yesterday this 9 tonne flat bed -- 92 tonne

:16:13.:16:19.

flatbed truck left Filton head to go Emerson's Green. On board a

:16:19.:16:24.

giant oven. Airbus use it to cook their carbon-fibre components

:16:24.:16:31.

creating light aircraft. They brought it here, the new National

:16:31.:16:36.

Research Centre on the other side of the Science Park.

:16:36.:16:41.

Bristol is first class in research. It is a real academic centre for it,

:16:41.:16:46.

but the UK is not great at at bridging the golf between academic

:16:46.:16:50.

research and industry application. The NCC is here to fill that void.

:16:50.:16:53.

It was all smiles today at the science park, but they know their

:16:53.:17:01.

job starts now. Getting the brightest hi-tech entrepreneurs to

:17:01.:17:11.
:17:11.:17:15.

The science park 25 years in the making.

:17:15.:17:21.

Now to the world of art. It has emerged that for the first

:17:21.:17:24.

time in over 150 years the President of the Royal West of

:17:24.:17:26.

England Art Academy has resigned. Simon Quadrat quit in protest at

:17:26.:17:29.

the artistic direction the Academy was taking. Its new management team

:17:29.:17:32.

has been trying to attract more visitors by showing works by

:17:32.:17:37.

popular artists like Jack Vettriano and possibly Rolf Harris. But some

:17:37.:17:47.
:17:47.:17:49.

local painters claim it amounts to There is over 150 years of history

:17:49.:17:57.

that's here, but but its the future that's at stake. The current

:17:57.:17:59.

exhibition includes the giant Damian Hirst sculpture outside plus

:17:59.:18:02.

work by painter Mary Fedden and sculptor Elisabeth Frink. But its

:18:02.:18:05.

plans to bring in more popular artists and change the way they're

:18:05.:18:07.

chosen that have angered many and caused president and painter Simon

:18:07.:18:10.

Quadrat to resign.. It would be foolish to say the only way of

:18:10.:18:14.

bringing people through the door is putting on populist art. Anything

:18:14.:18:19.

like that that undermines the integrity of the art we show, where

:18:19.:18:23.

the academy has no opportunity to say one way or the other, whether

:18:23.:18:27.

they approve or disapprove of it, well these are not to the credit of

:18:27.:18:31.

the current regime of this academy. In terms of the programme and

:18:31.:18:36.

planning, we want to have a cross- fertilisation between audiences.

:18:36.:18:39.

Somebody might see something like the Damien Hirst and hopefully

:18:39.:18:43.

develop a bigger understanding of the visual arts.

:18:43.:18:46.

The upcoming exhibition by Jack Vettriano has caused problems.

:18:46.:18:48.

You'll probably recognise his pictures, they're hugely popular,

:18:48.:18:51.

but not critically acclaimed and there was even talk of bringing in

:18:51.:19:01.
:19:01.:19:02.

Rolf Harris. The fascinating thing about art is that there is so much

:19:02.:19:09.

agreement and disagreement about it. Often it is very subjective. What

:19:09.:19:14.

one thinks is popular another person says, "That's not for me."

:19:14.:19:18.

Of course, I understand that they can have different views and

:19:18.:19:23.

different tastes. Some artists fear their views and

:19:23.:19:27.

experience are being ignored at the academy, but the board and the

:19:27.:19:31.

director say the majority of the public have never set foot through

:19:31.:19:35.

the doors of the gallery so they have no modernise and change to

:19:35.:19:45.
:19:45.:19:49.

The Trowbridge boxer Nick Blackwell is confident he can spring a

:19:49.:19:54.

surprise despite being the under dog for this weekend's fight. The

:19:54.:19:57.

20-year-old made headlines last November when he became the

:19:57.:20:01.

youngest winner of the English middleweight belt. This next big

:20:01.:20:06.

opportunity has come quickly. He found a way to keep any nerves in

:20:06.:20:12.

Far from the toil and sweat of the boxing ring, this is where Nick

:20:12.:20:16.

Blackwell comes to relax. A keen fisherman since he was young,

:20:16.:20:21.

it is the perfect way to clear his head days before the biggest fight

:20:21.:20:25.

of his life. It takes your mind off it out in

:20:25.:20:31.

the countryside and yeah, just think about fushing and just to

:20:31.:20:36.

chill out. Especially when it is a big fight like this, but I deal

:20:36.:20:40.

with them this the right way. If I win, it opens so many more doors

:20:40.:20:43.

for me. Getting a British title chance

:20:43.:20:46.

after just eight professional fights is virtually unheard of. The

:20:46.:20:51.

man he is fighting Martin Murray, is eight years older than him and

:20:51.:20:56.

had three times as many bouts, but it seems the Murray camp may have

:20:56.:20:58.

underestimated their opponent's background.

:20:58.:21:06.

They haven't seen a lot of me. They have been asking for tapes and we

haven't given them any. Their attitude is starting to change and

:21:11.:21:15.

they are getting more worried and they have respect for me. I'm

trying to play with his head really and it is working.

Nick had the assistance of a top conditioning coach for the last six

:21:22.:21:27.

months. He is around the same weight as his last fight, but it is

:21:27.:21:31.

now muscle. We have got him leaner so he is

:21:31.:21:35.

quicker when he is he is throwing punches. His hands are quicker than

:21:35.:21:41.

they were previously. The whole package has improved another 20%

from where he was five or six months.

Commonwealth Intercontinental belts are on the line on Saturday.

A win would give Nick a world ranking and then he would be with

public. We will give you a sneak pre-view. First, a bike used in

used to have ordinary forks, but because I kept on going over the

:22:57.:23:03.

payments and breaking -- pavements and breaking the forks, my father

:23:03.:23:08.

put the forks on for me. I remember riding it on the Downs with my

:23:08.:23:16.

mother and father down Lady's Mile and place like that.

:23:16.:23:21.

My son rode it afterwards when he was three. My grandson has just

ridden it. Very well done, Thomas, I am very proud of you.

Today was the first day that Thomas rode the bike and I was privileged

trail is being set-up to celebrate Bristol Zoo's 175th birthday.

:24:13.:24:18.

Businesses, charities and children are helping to hand pain the --

:24:18.:24:26.

hand-paint the animals. Why gorillas? We were looking for a

:24:26.:24:33.

project that would help celebrate the zoo's 175th anniversary. We

:24:33.:24:38.

thought the gorillas are big creatures and they would make a big

:24:38.:24:42.

impact. At the end of the trail, we will bring them back in and auction

:24:42.:24:47.

them off at end of September and proceeds are going to gorilla

:24:47.:24:51.

conservation projects and the Wallace and Gromit appeal.

:24:51.:24:58.

There are 100 smaller gorillas. This one, King Alfred, was made in

:24:58.:25:01.

Bristol. They will be on display from the start of July for ten

:25:01.:25:05.

weeks. Don't they look great!

:25:05.:25:08.

Let's move on to the weather. It has been really gloomy today. Not

:25:08.:25:11.

has been really gloomy today. Not much rain, but just grey.

:25:11.:25:14.

Well, we have had a fair few showers. We have had everything

:25:14.:25:18.

this week. It has been a mixed bag and there is more unsettled weather

:25:18.:25:22.

on the way. Today's unsettled weather was the legacy of several

:25:22.:25:26.

systems. One that came in overnight. That was a Warm Front. Several more

:25:26.:25:30.

behind and more tomorrow. The last one really, really dragging its

:25:30.:25:34.

heels and bringing cloudy and wet weather on the way. We have cloudy

:25:34.:25:39.

and wet weather tonight. If you are an amateur astronomer, there is a

:25:39.:25:42.

possibility we might have just enough visibility at times to see

:25:43.:25:47.

it. It is a significant one, but the moon is low in the sky at this

:25:47.:25:51.

time of year and we have the showers to contend. For those 100

:25:51.:25:56.

minutes while there is breaks in the sky, you might see T for tonne,

:25:56.:26:01.

we see a continuation of the showers. A few breaks here and

:26:01.:26:06.

there but a band of rain spreads in. Heavy at times, especially over

:26:06.:26:11.

Somerset, but the cloud coverage means our overnight lows not

:26:11.:26:16.

particularly low, typically between 10 and 12 Celsius. The rain lingers

:26:16.:26:20.

on into the first part of Wednesday. Early doors, rather wet. Then

:26:20.:26:26.

things brighten up, but behind that, more showers to come. The showers

:26:26.:26:31.

tomorrow heavier than today. I wouldn't be surprised if we see

:26:31.:26:37.

hail and hear a rumble or two of thunder. With a brisk westerly,

:26:37.:26:40.

temperatures take ago tumble. It was warm and sticky today and we

:26:40.:26:46.

got to 20 Celsius. Tomorrow, 16 and 17 Celsius at best.

:26:46.:26:50.

The outlook after that, there is your stats again for tomorrow. The

:26:50.:26:54.

sun index low despite the fact that we will be seeing sunny spells. The

:26:54.:26:59.

grass pollen is low. After that, more low pressure coming in. We end

:26:59.:27:04.

the week on a grey, gloomy, wet and windy note and rather chilly as

:27:04.:27:11.

well on Friday. Saturday and Sunday, more showers

:27:11.:27:16.

to come. Accompanied by once again a still south-westerly wind. The

:27:16.:27:19.

showers should make a disappearance by Sunday. At least ending the

:27:20.:27:29.
:27:30.:27:31.

I am really excited about the lunar Thank you very much.

:27:31.:27:35.

Get your telescope out. Hopefully we won't need to.
