Good evening and welcome to BBC Points West.

:00:09.:00:13.

Our headlines tonight: The tragedy of a neglected toddler. Little

:00:13.:00:16.

Daniel drowned in a garden pond, his parents and grandmother are

:00:16.:00:21.

guilty of not looking after him. New insights in the turbulent

:00:21.:00:26.

marriage of Shrien and Anni Dewani. Another phone hacking story but

:00:26.:00:30.

this time it's a drill that cuts hundreds of lines.

:00:30.:00:34.

Happy birthday Bristol Zoo! We will be live here at a special party

:00:34.:00:37.

with hundreds of people and Larry the Lima as they celebrate 175

:00:37.:00:47.
:00:47.:00:50.

Good evening. A little boy who was neglected by

:00:50.:00:53.

his mother, father and grandmother fell into a pond and drowned, and

:00:53.:00:56.

nobody noticed. Two year old, Daniel Rees-Smith, was at his

:00:56.:00:59.

grandmother's house in Hanham when the tragedy happened.

:00:59.:01:02.

Today, charges of manslaughter against his family were dropped and

:01:02.:01:10.

they pleaded guilty to not properly caring for the boy.

:01:10.:01:13.

Grandmother, Hilary Rees, who was looking after Daniel when he died

:01:13.:01:18.

refused to comment as she left court. Daniel's mother, Charlotte,

:01:18.:01:20.

and his dad, Andrew Marshall, also wouldn't answer questions about why

:01:21.:01:26.

the little boy was left alone. Daniel was discovered in the pond

:01:26.:01:30.

late on the Friday evening of June 4th last year. He was rushed to

:01:30.:01:33.

Bristol's children's hospital where he was pronounced dead. He'd fallen

:01:33.:01:37.

into this pond in the back garden of his grandmother's house in Mount

:01:37.:01:41.

Hill Road, Hanham. His parents were in the nearby Cross Keys pub while

:01:41.:01:45.

Hilary Rees was in left charge of the two year old. After his death

:01:46.:01:47.

both Charlotte Rees-smith and Andrew Marshall left emotional

:01:48.:01:54.

messages about their son on Facebook. In court they spoke only

:01:54.:01:58.

to confirm their names, but Daniels' mother cried in the dock.

:01:58.:02:01.

The charges of child neglect covered a period between April 2009

:02:01.:02:04.

and June 5th 2010 for both women and for Andrew Marshall just for

:02:04.:02:12.

the one day - the day that Daniel died. In accepting the guilty pleas

:02:12.:02:15.

to child neglect, Rupert Lowe for the prosecution said "This was not

:02:15.:02:20.

an easy decision to make. But we took into account the public

:02:20.:02:23.

interest". The prosecution then formally withdrew the charges of

:02:23.:02:30.

manslaughter against all three defendants. The judge told the

:02:30.:02:32.

three that they had committed serious crimes and they shouldn't

:02:32.:02:36.

take any indication from the fact he was granting them bail. All

:02:36.:02:45.

three will be sentenced next week. A group of travellers have moved

:02:45.:02:48.

into an industrial estate in Bristol. They arrived at the

:02:48.:02:52.

Liberty Industrial Park over the weekend. A local businessman, who

:02:52.:02:55.

rents a nearby unit, said it's the second time this year a convoy has

:02:55.:02:58.

moved onto the estate. The travellers are due to be evicted

:02:58.:03:01.

this evening. A new rehabilitation centre in

:03:01.:03:05.

Wiltshire for injured soldiers has taken in its first patients today.

:03:05.:03:08.

17 million has been spent turning Tedworth House in Tidworth into a

:03:08.:03:11.

specialist recovery centre. It's one of five centres being opened by

:03:11.:03:21.
:03:21.:03:22.

the charity Help for Heroes across the country.

:03:22.:03:25.

The residents of 21 care homes in the West are facing an uncertain

:03:25.:03:28.

future after today's news that Southern Cross is closing down. The

:03:28.:03:31.

company is the biggest care home operator in the country. Our

:03:31.:03:33.

business correspondent, Dave Harvey, has been looking at the

:03:33.:03:36.

implications. Dave, does this mean these homes will close down as

:03:36.:03:46.
:03:46.:03:47.

well? The biggest question is just that, although Southern Cross is

:03:47.:03:52.

getting out of the business, the homes continue. First of all there

:03:52.:03:57.

are 21 homes across the West Country. This is Haven Lodge at

:03:57.:04:03.

Portishead. About 200 people live there. Paid for mostly by the NHS

:04:03.:04:07.

and the local council. Mick is run by Southern Cross but it is not

:04:07.:04:12.

owned by Southern Cross. Like all there of the homes, there is a

:04:12.:04:16.

landlord that owns the building. Up until now those landlords have

:04:16.:04:21.

thought they could do better job of it, both for their shareholders and

:04:21.:04:25.

themselves making profits, but also for the residents and relatives

:04:25.:04:29.

providing better care by being part of Southern Cross. That has all

:04:29.:04:32.

gone, Southern Cross are in deep financial trouble and they are

:04:32.:04:36.

getting out and handing the homes back to the landlords. So the

:04:36.:04:42.

landlords are left in the lurch, what are their options? Some of the

:04:42.:04:44.

landlords are care organisations and they will be trying to run

:04:44.:04:49.

these homes themselves and do a better job of it. They will be

:04:49.:04:54.

smaller, but others will try to sell them on. What is worrying is

:04:54.:04:58.

this is Britain's biggest care provider and they run 750 homes

:04:58.:05:02.

across the country. People are thinking, if they cannot make money,

:05:02.:05:07.

how can people make an honest living and still look after people?

:05:07.:05:10.

What should relatives be doing or thinking at the moment? All they

:05:10.:05:15.

can do is contact the home and ask them what is happening. People are

:05:15.:05:19.

desperately worried, but is the Government going to step in? MPs

:05:19.:05:25.

are saying banks are too big to fail, but care homes are much more

:05:25.:05:35.
:05:35.:05:37.

important. Ministers have said We will be watching to see if they

:05:37.:05:41.

will keep their word. This is Monday's Points West with

:05:41.:05:44.

Alex and David. Thank you for joining us.

:05:44.:05:48.

Coming up in tonight's programme: The new fuel at the Pump Rooms -

:05:48.:05:54.

could there really be power hidden in slime? And fluke or future star?

:05:54.:06:04.
:06:04.:06:06.

We meet the schoolboy cricketer already breaking records at 12.

:06:06.:06:09.

A documentary being shown tonight will be making new claims about

:06:09.:06:12.

Anni Dewani's state of mind before she was shot dead on her honeymoon

:06:12.:06:15.

in South Africa. The Channel Four Dispatches programme "Murder on

:06:15.:06:17.

Honeymoon" investigates her death, shortly after her marriage to

:06:17.:06:21.

Bristol Businessman, Shrien Dewani. He denies being involved in her

:06:21.:06:23.

murder, although the South African authorities want him extradited to

:06:23.:06:28.

stand trial. The programme tonight has exclusive access to Anni

:06:28.:06:30.

Dewani's family, and earlier I spoke to the producer, Dimitri

:06:30.:06:39.

Collingridge, about tonight's programme.

:06:39.:06:43.

We are looking at the two sides of what the South Africans are

:06:43.:06:49.

alleging happened and what Shrien Dewani says happened. We have also

:06:49.:06:56.

spent a lot of time with Anni Dewani's family. They have told us

:06:56.:07:02.

a lot about the relationship they had from their point of view.

:07:02.:07:07.

do, you mention her family, I know you have spoken to her father.

:07:07.:07:16.

Let's look at a clip of that. According to the family, before the

:07:16.:07:20.

wedding Shrien Dewani told Anni Dewani he did not believe in sex

:07:20.:07:27.

before marriage. This undid him to her father. I said that you should

:07:27.:07:34.

be very proud of that, what a nice boy. It is part of the Hindu

:07:34.:07:43.

culture and they commented on that to my daughter. She would find that

:07:43.:07:52.

funny, but according to Hindu culture it gives respect to the

:07:52.:07:55.

voice. There is new evidence to talk about

:07:55.:07:58.

in the programme of her communications with her family

:07:58.:08:03.

about her marriage, can you tell us any more? We understand she

:08:03.:08:08.

discussed the possibility of divorce with friends and family.

:08:08.:08:15.

She had on one occasion described Shrien Dewani as a monster. She

:08:15.:08:20.

said of though he was a really nice guy, she wasn't happy with him at

:08:20.:08:27.

all. That is what we understand. was she saying this to? Befriend.

:08:27.:08:33.

You also spoke to the lawyer of the taxi-driver accused of the murder.

:08:33.:08:37.

We have another club if we can look at that.

:08:37.:08:44.

The taxi driver was never assaulted or tortured and there was never any

:08:44.:08:53.

price placed on him. Independently of each other, they tell the same

:08:53.:08:58.

story about a plot that was hatched to kill the female occupant of the

:08:58.:09:06.

taxi. That, I believe some answers. Obviously he is defending his

:09:06.:09:16.
:09:16.:09:16.

client. Briefly, what's have Shrien Dewani's family had to say to you?

:09:16.:09:21.

He is family and the husband himself have declined to comment.

:09:21.:09:25.

Then there are lots of conflicting stories and they are all

:09:25.:09:30.

allegations and they remained at unless there is eventually a trial.

:09:30.:09:34.

It is on tonight, and thanks very much for joining us.

:09:34.:09:37.

We contacted the publicist, Max Clifford - he's the spokesperson

:09:37.:09:41.

for the Dewani family and is featured in tonight's programme. He

:09:41.:09:44.

told us that the family say, "the South African police have declined

:09:44.:09:47.

to interview Shrien. The matter is before the courts where all issues

:09:47.:09:55.

will be raised and his name cleared".

:09:55.:09:58.

Engineers from British Telecom says they are working around the clock

:09:58.:10:01.

to restore services to hundreds of homes and businesses in Gloucester.

:10:01.:10:03.

Phone and internet connections were lost when drilling by Severn Trent

:10:03.:10:08.

Water cut through underground cables.

:10:08.:10:12.

Claire Higgs isn't alone - far from it. At least 1,400 other homes and

:10:12.:10:15.

businesses in Gloucester have been without their phone and internet

:10:15.:10:25.
:10:25.:10:25.

access for four days now. Are we going to get compensation

:10:25.:10:30.

for it? Who knows. Dear thing you should get compensation? Yes,

:10:30.:10:35.

people like me on BT vision, we don't have an internet, we don't

:10:35.:10:41.

have television challenge. My kids are missing out. For Claire it's a

:10:41.:10:43.

costly inconvenience but for others, this doctor's surgery for example,

:10:43.:10:46.

it's causing real problems contacting patients and hospitals.

:10:46.:10:48.

It happened on Thursday when drilling for Severn Trent Water,

:10:48.:10:51.

which is working to improve Gloucester's flood prevention, cut

:10:51.:11:01.
:11:01.:11:01.

through eight BT cables. On this map on the side of the construction

:11:01.:11:06.

site fence, details of what lies beneath from cable TV, two gas

:11:06.:11:11.

pipes, electricity, water. That should tell engineers exactly what

:11:11.:11:15.

is Underground. In Longlevens and near the city centre it seems there

:11:15.:11:17.

are BT engineers everywhere working to restore the services. But some

:11:18.:11:26.

can't afford to wait. It has caused havoc. I lost two deals because of

:11:26.:11:32.

it at the weekend. Not being able to get in touch with customers to

:11:32.:11:37.

make appointments so they have gone elsewhere to buy cars. Explain to

:11:37.:11:43.

us what that dongle does. It gives me mobile broadband, so I have to

:11:43.:11:47.

spend 20 to get mobile broadband so I can get in touch with my

:11:47.:11:50.

customers. This is the culprit - the underground drill known as the

:11:51.:12:00.

Aussie mole. Neither Sever Trent nor BT were available for interview

:12:00.:12:03.

by us today but both are apologising and hope normal service

:12:03.:12:08.

will be resumed as soon as possible - maybe by the end of the week.

:12:08.:12:11.

A campaign to make Frome the first town in Somerset to have a 20mph

:12:11.:12:14.

speed limit on every residential street has been launched. Those

:12:14.:12:17.

behind the "20 is Plenty" campaign say it would make the roads safer

:12:17.:12:21.

and encourage people to walk and cycle. But critics claim it would

:12:21.:12:23.

make little difference, after police said it's not practicable to

:12:23.:12:33.
:12:33.:12:50.

To be hunt continues for for alternative at fuel. This

:12:50.:12:53.

alternative is green, slimy and lives in baking hot temperatures.

:12:53.:12:59.

For nearly 2,000 years, these Waters have been believed to cure.

:12:59.:13:04.

Lurking beneath the murky depths, researchers from the University of

:13:04.:13:11.

Baath believe they have a remedy for carbon-based of pollution. This

:13:11.:13:18.

algae contains oil which can be used. We have managed to isolate a

:13:18.:13:23.

clean-up seven species. We are looking at to see what sort of

:13:23.:13:27.

temperatures they prefer, and what sort of products they make. If they

:13:27.:13:32.

make oil, that is what we would make diesel from.

:13:32.:13:37.

Does it have a practical future? The team say that although the

:13:37.:13:41.

converting process is expensive, farming algae uses a less land than

:13:41.:13:51.
:13:51.:13:52.

crop based bio Fuels. Because our they are more sufficient, you need

:13:52.:13:56.

a fraction of the amount of land to produce the same amount of fuel.

:13:56.:14:06.
:14:06.:14:07.

Are they can accumulate in the region of 50% of their dry weight.

:14:07.:14:10.

It is potentially an efficient way of producing an alternative to

:14:10.:14:14.

fossil fuels. The team have much work to do to

:14:14.:14:17.

identify the other species beneath the Waters, which could help power

:14:17.:14:25.

the future. Who knows? One day, these ancient Waters could have

:14:25.:14:30.

another claim to fame. A younger power lifter from the

:14:30.:14:34.

Forest of Dean has been crowned a world champion at the Special

:14:34.:14:39.

Olympics in Athens. Myth and Fisher won a gold, silver and two bronze

:14:39.:14:49.
:14:49.:14:49.

medals. -- Nathan and Fisher. Today, he came back to his gym.

:14:49.:14:53.

As a world champion and gold medallist, he is getting used to

:14:54.:14:58.

the trappings of fame. On Saturday, he was guest of honour at a large

:14:58.:15:03.

dinner. Today, he received a hero's welcome at the gym where he trains.

:15:03.:15:09.

He is obviously happy to lap up the limelight. We have known him a long

:15:09.:15:19.

time, he is a tremendous young man. It is good for the club as well,

:15:19.:15:24.

Betty has achieved what he has. came through and conquered the

:15:24.:15:28.

situation. It was not only physical, but mental power. That is what we

:15:28.:15:32.

all need. Nathan's achievements have been

:15:32.:15:36.

outstanding. What makes the more remarkable is that he was born with

:15:36.:15:39.

a condition which meant he could not walk until the age of three.

:15:39.:15:45.

Not only that, before the condition there -- competition, he came down

:15:45.:15:55.
:15:55.:15:55.

with food poisoning and was on a drip. I am so happy. I have focused

:15:55.:16:04.

my mind. I do my best. What he achieved his of the planet. Being

:16:04.:16:11.

ill, on a drip, like food for 24 hours, goes out and performs lifts

:16:11.:16:15.

of that calibre? Amazing. There is no stopping making. After

:16:16.:16:21.

showing of his medals, he was soon back to training. This week, we

:16:21.:16:25.

have 10 or 11 sessions. A lot of people want to speak to him, see

:16:25.:16:28.

his medals and have a chat to him, congratulate him. It will be a busy

:16:28.:16:32.

week. Nathan is now preparing for the

:16:32.:16:37.

British championships in the autumn. He will defend his title at the

:16:37.:16:45.

Special Olympics in 2015. You have to be really focused to

:16:45.:16:54.

get that fit. Now to another young man destined

:16:54.:16:57.

for sporting excellence. In Somerset, they are busy doing their

:16:57.:17:00.

research to see if 12-year-old Owen Price has set a new cricketing

:17:00.:17:03.

world record. Coming in to bowl for Westlands Under 12s in Yeovil he

:17:03.:17:06.

took a hat trick - that's three wickets in three successive balls.

:17:06.:17:10.

Quite special for any bowler at any level, of course. But then in his

:17:10.:17:13.

next over - he did it again! It's thought he could be the youngest

:17:13.:17:21.

person ever to take a double hat trick.

:17:21.:17:25.

First wicket I bowled round his legs, second one straight through

:17:25.:17:30.

the gate and it hit middle stump, the third one I bowled off stump

:17:30.:17:35.

and it clipped the stump. By any standards Owen's figures make

:17:35.:17:38.

impressive reading. Two hat tricks in two overs and he ended the game

:17:38.:17:48.
:17:48.:17:50.

with figures of six for six. wickets in a row. Not bad?

:17:50.:17:53.

No-one was more surprised than former Somerset batting hero Jimmy

:17:53.:17:56.

Cook, who now coaches the youngster at county level. Owen is Somerset's

:17:56.:18:04.

under 12 wicket keeper. It just shows, he got six wickets in six

:18:04.:18:08.

balls. He is a talented young boy, he can turn to bowling and he is

:18:08.:18:11.

probably a good tennis and football player. We were surprised that he

:18:11.:18:18.

bowls very well. Were you throw away the wicketkeeper gloves?

:18:18.:18:23.

will stay as keeper. Are you telling me six in six was a fluke?

:18:23.:18:28.

Probably! Only last week Somerset's Arul

:18:28.:18:31.

Suppiah set a new world record by taking six wickets for five runs in

:18:31.:18:33.

a 20-20 game. Now everyone is frantically

:18:33.:18:36.

searching the record books to see if Owen at 12 is the youngest

:18:36.:18:44.

player ever to take a double hat trick. It could well be the case.

:18:44.:18:49.

We have not looked in detail added that it is possible. I think a 13-

:18:49.:18:54.

year-old has done it fairly recently but he is only 12.

:18:54.:19:04.
:19:04.:19:12.

Maybe he needs tougher opponents. Your foot was over the edge!

:19:12.:19:16.

Now, we are off to the zoo. There are not many institutions that can

:19:16.:19:20.

claim to have entertained six generations of families, but

:19:20.:19:25.

Bristol Zoo is one of them. Today it celebrates its 175th anniversary

:19:25.:19:34.

with a big party. We took a sofa to the zoo to meet Terry Nutkins, who

:19:34.:19:39.

was presenting a special programme directly after Points West, about

:19:39.:19:45.

the zoo. He has been reminiscing about Animal Magic, filmed in is

:19:45.:19:55.
:19:55.:19:56.

very studio. First of all, we are sitting on our.

:19:56.:20:01.

West sofa. We are privileged. Welcome back to Bristol Zoo. How

:20:01.:20:07.

does it feel to be back? It is a great pleasure. It is great to see

:20:07.:20:10.

all of the new enclosures and Hallett has changed over the last

:20:10.:20:18.

30 years. It has. Reminders about them. It was 30 years ago that I

:20:18.:20:21.

first came here with Johnny Maurice. He was the presenter of Animal

:20:21.:20:31.
:20:31.:20:31.

Magic. He spent a lot of time here. I came along on a couple of

:20:32.:20:40.

occasions, it brings back nice memories. Also, it is good to see

:20:40.:20:45.

the way that the zoo has moved on in those last 30 years. Back in the

:20:45.:20:50.

day, the elephants would literally wander around outside the

:20:50.:20:57.

enclosures. Yes. That was rather lovely, in its way. They used to be

:20:57.:21:00.

rides on the llamas and elephants. The animals just walked around with

:21:01.:21:05.

their keepers, chimpanzees. Then, environmental health and safety

:21:05.:21:10.

came on board, and put an end to all of that. The thing that Bristol

:21:10.:21:19.

Zoo have done is successfully breed animals in captivity and then --

:21:19.:21:24.

across multiple generations. Many zoos are now involved in releasing

:21:24.:21:31.

animals back into the wild. Back in the day when you were here, it is

:21:31.:21:35.

often quoted in television never to work with animals. There is footage

:21:35.:21:40.

of Johnny Maurice with a gorilla which has just given birth, and

:21:41.:21:45.

hands the baby to Johnny. That was the most wonderful piece of animal

:21:45.:21:50.

footage in the world. Every time I see it, it makes me feel so soft

:21:50.:21:55.

Delilah? If you are so blinking clever, you look after him! OK, but

only for a moment! I say, he is quite heavy.

:22:07.:22:11.

I spoke with Johnny many times about it. Because he knew about

:22:11.:22:16.

animals, he was quite nervous about that situation. Animals can change

:22:16.:22:20.

rapidly. All of a sudden, the mother could have thought, what are

:22:20.:22:26.

you doing with my baby? But none of that happened. It was just a

:22:26.:22:32.

magical television moment. In the programme of looking back you have

:22:32.:22:39.

been working on merit -- there are a lot of lovely moments, memories

:22:39.:22:44.

of this place. Yes. A lot of older people, at my age, who were here in

:22:44.:22:53.

those days, they remember Johnny with the elephants. The hosepipe,

the kids leaping and the water everywhere. It was all good,

:23:29.:23:32.

wonderful to reminisce with you about it, so thank you for taking

the time. It is a pleasure. Good to meet you, I hope you enjoy these

two. Definitely. That was such a treat! We go to

these do now. What is happening there?

:23:47.:23:51.

There is a great party atmosphere at this special picnic for the

:23:51.:23:57.

175th birthday of these two. It is for staff, former staff, family and

:23:57.:24:01.

friends. Everybody is having a great time. There is so much

:24:01.:24:04.

history in this place. If the animals could talk, they could tell

:24:04.:24:09.

us a few stories. We will have to make do with the people. Over here

:24:10.:24:16.

is the man who was the zoo director from 1974 till 2001. You remember

:24:16.:24:20.

the 125th birthday, 50 years ago! What are your best memories of

:24:20.:24:27.

these two? The most memorable is being here when an elephant fell

:24:27.:24:37.
:24:37.:24:42.

over. That was chaotic. I always remember that day. It was an

:24:42.:24:44.

amazing attraction back then, hundreds of thousands came every

week. In 1967, 35,000 people came. They do not get that in one month,

now. -- 35,000 people came every week.

This man, John Partridge, what are your favourite memories over the

:25:14.:25:20.

years? Everything is brilliant. The staff are fantastic. My first

:25:20.:25:25.

memory of working here is starting with Samson, the silver back

UK in 1971. I love that sort of thing. I have worked with elephants

and giraffes. We all remember Wendy the elephant. I worked with her for

20 years, off and on. I would walk around and introduce it to young

people. There have been a lot of memorable experiences. There are
