Tall Ships Festival -- on board Hello. | :01:02. | :01:05.
A 16-year-old boy has been questioned by police after fire | :01:05. | :01:10.
destroyed one the region's most well-known pubs. Fire crews spent | :01:10. | :01:13.
much of the day damping down the remains of the building in | :01:13. | :01:15.
Gloucester. Emergency services were called out | :01:16. | :01:19.
in the early hours of this morning. At the height of the blaze, the | :01:19. | :01:22.
flames could be seen for miles around. Here is our Gloucestershire | :01:22. | :01:31.
reporter, Steve Knibbs. At its peak, this was a huge and | :01:31. | :01:37.
intense blaze. 50 firefighters from across the county were brought in | :01:37. | :01:40.
to tackle it. One of the owners, who was inside at the time, managed | :01:40. | :01:43.
to escape, but one of her dogs was killed. A policeman was also | :01:43. | :01:46.
treated in hospital for breathing in smoke. With major structural | :01:46. | :01:49.
damage, firefighters could not get inside so their job was to make | :01:49. | :01:57.
sure the fire did not spread. used the appliance to damp down at | :01:57. | :02:00.
the scene, make the same safe and control the fire water run-off to | :02:00. | :02:03.
make sure it is not going into the drains where it could pollute the | :02:03. | :02:07.
water. In the morning daylight, the true extent of the damage is clear. | :02:07. | :02:12.
The entire pub and restaurant destroyed. The damage is so bad it | :02:12. | :02:17.
is likely the building will have to be demolished. But the focus is | :02:17. | :02:21.
turning to the investigation. Scenes of crimes of scissors and | :02:21. | :02:24.
fire investigators are here, trying to find out how and why the fire | :02:24. | :02:29.
started. -- scenes of crimes officers. And it is delicate work, | :02:29. | :02:33.
piecing through the charred remains looking for vital evidence. | :02:33. | :02:38.
first job, excavating a fire scene, is to remove the roof area which | :02:38. | :02:42.
has fallen in and will not provide forensic evidence. Once we dig | :02:42. | :02:50.
deeper, there might be a lot of evidence preserves and a need. | :02:50. | :02:53.
preserved underneath. The Orchard was a popular venue. When it opened | :02:53. | :02:57.
in the late 80s, it was the 200th Beefeater pub in the country, and a | :02:57. | :03:00.
major destination locally. Today it is in different hands, but the | :03:00. | :03:03.
owners face an uncertain future, their staff looking for new jobs. | :03:03. | :03:06.
am trying to find a venue for our wedding... And the fallout of the | :03:06. | :03:09.
fire extends elsewhere. Jason Smith and Lynn Burns are good friends | :03:09. | :03:12.
with the owners, and were planning to hold their wedding reception at | :03:12. | :03:15.
the Orchard in a fortnight. Devastated, I think. That is the | :03:15. | :03:19.
only way I can describe it. Very worried about what we are going to | :03:19. | :03:25.
do. More importantly, my concern is for the owners. Once we knew they | :03:25. | :03:29.
were OK, it was the thought of having to sort out the wedding and | :03:29. | :03:35.
changed everything. Early this morning, a 60-year-old boy from | :03:35. | :03:39.
Gloucester was arrested on suspicion of arson. He is still in | :03:39. | :03:45.
custody, being questioned. A man and a woman have been charged | :03:45. | :03:48.
with child neglect after a toddler was found dead in a house in | :03:48. | :03:51.
Bristol. Jamie Green, who is 32, and 35-year-old Sonia Britton were | :03:51. | :03:54.
arrested after the body of the two- year-old boy was found in a flat on | :03:54. | :03:58.
Bell Hill Road in St George. They have been remanded in custody and | :03:58. | :04:01.
will appear before Bristol magistrates in the morning. How the | :04:01. | :04:03.
child died is still unclear, and further forensic tests are being | :04:03. | :04:09.
carried out. Nearly a thousand people attended | :04:09. | :04:12.
the funeral of a Wiltshire teenager who was killed by a polar bear | :04:12. | :04:17.
while on expedition in Norway. Horatio Chapple, who was 17 and | :04:17. | :04:19.
from Bishopstone near Salisbury, was attacked by the animal, which | :04:19. | :04:24.
had got into his tent. This afternoon's heavy rain did not put | :04:25. | :04:27.
off the hundreds of mourners who packed Salisbury Cathedral for the | :04:27. | :04:36.
service. A young man who was full of life | :04:36. | :04:40.
and full of fun and adventure, clearly a sportsman. His mother has | :04:40. | :04:44.
written a marvellous tribute for the beginning of this order of | :04:44. | :04:49.
service that describes him and evokes, I never knew her ratio, but | :04:49. | :04:55.
I get a sense of him as a young man with his future before him -- I | :04:55. | :04:59.
never knew Horatio Chapple. He had get-up-and-go and an instinct for | :04:59. | :05:01.
friendship. Some of Horatio Chapple's fellow | :05:01. | :05:04.
adventurers, who were with him in Svalbard when he died, were also | :05:04. | :05:07.
among today's congregation. A refugee action group is warning | :05:07. | :05:10.
the latest sham marriage uncovered in Gloucestershire could damage the | :05:10. | :05:16.
chances of success for genuine cases. A man and a woman were | :05:16. | :05:19.
jailed this week after trying to get married for the purpose of | :05:19. | :05:22.
being allowed to stay in this country. And new figures reveal an | :05:22. | :05:25.
increasing number of foreigners are keen to settle here. Last year | :05:25. | :05:28.
there was a 21% rise in the number of migrants coming to the UK, while | :05:28. | :05:34.
the number leaving hit a six-year low. Sabet Choudhury reports. | :05:34. | :05:37.
Father of two Mojeed Bello, from Nigeria, wanted a future in the UK | :05:37. | :05:42.
for his children and partner. His solution was to pay this woman, | :05:42. | :05:48.
Carina Mersalina, a Dutch national with EU passport, to marry him. | :05:48. | :05:51.
Bello came to this church in Gloucester to ask the vicar to | :05:51. | :05:54.
conduct the ceremony. And that is where his deception started to fall | :05:54. | :06:02.
apart. There did not seem to be a particular chemistry between them. | :06:02. | :06:07.
They did not seem to be madly in love. There was something within me | :06:07. | :06:12.
that was saying, this is not real. There is something amiss about this. | :06:12. | :06:21.
I needed to check-up. That is why I wanted to bring the police and | :06:21. | :06:26.
check that my suspicions were correct, which they were. This is | :06:26. | :06:30.
the flat that the couple had told Reverend Simpson that they live | :06:30. | :06:34.
that. When he came here to meet them, he realised there were little | :06:34. | :06:40.
signs of domestic bliss, or that they actually live here at all. | :06:40. | :06:44.
After the tip-off from Reverend Simpson and the police | :06:44. | :06:48.
investigation, the couple were arrested. And they have both been | :06:48. | :06:51.
jailed. Today, new figures show an increasing number of people are | :06:51. | :06:54.
keen to make their home in the UK. Last year, for the first time, the | :06:55. | :06:57.
number of immigrants living in Britain broke the 7 million mark. | :06:57. | :07:05.
But the desire to stay can sometimes prompt desperate measures. | :07:05. | :07:07.
And sham marriages have now raised concern amongst charities which | :07:07. | :07:11.
help asylum seekers. They feel they make genuine cases where refugees | :07:11. | :07:16.
want to marry EU nationals much more difficult. It has always been | :07:16. | :07:19.
quite hard for people to get married to genuinely want to get | :07:19. | :07:23.
married. But Home Office used to make people apply for a certificate | :07:23. | :07:27.
of approval, but that was abolished recently because it was deemed | :07:27. | :07:31.
unlawful this year. It is still very hard for people to marry | :07:31. | :07:36.
because they have to show appropriate ID, which they often | :07:36. | :07:39.
don't have. The UK Border Agency told us today that, "This case | :07:39. | :07:42.
shows the desperate nature of immigration crime, with large sums | :07:42. | :07:47.
of money changing hands". With immigration continuing to rise, | :07:47. | :07:50.
Reverend Simpson and other vicars are being asked by the authorities | :07:50. | :07:53.
to remain vigilant to spot any other marriages which may not be | :07:53. | :08:03.
:08:03. | :08:03. | ||
genuine. It is the start of the August bank | :08:04. | :08:06.
holiday weekend, and you are watching your regional news | :08:06. | :08:09.
programme, BBC Points West. And stay with us, as there is much | :08:09. | :08:12.
more still to bring you, including: For two years running, always the | :08:12. | :08:16.
bridesmaid but never the bride. Can Somerset finally bring home the | :08:16. | :08:25.
silverware this weekend? And for the cricket at Edgbaston, | :08:25. | :08:29.
we are expecting showers from time to time tomorrow, not as heavy as | :08:29. | :08:33.
today. A similar story in Gloucester for the Tall Ships | :08:33. | :08:37.
Festival, but things will improve as we get to bank holiday Monday. | :08:37. | :08:41.
More later. A 59-year-old man from Gloucester | :08:42. | :08:44.
is still being questioned on suspicion of making threats to | :08:44. | :08:50.
Louise Mensch, the MP for Corby. The Metropolitan Police said the | :08:50. | :08:53.
man was arrested in Gloucester as part of an investigation into | :08:53. | :08:55.
"malicious communication and threats" via email and social | :08:55. | :09:00.
networking sites. Teenagers suffering from cancer | :09:00. | :09:03.
could soon be treated at their own dedicated unit in one of Bristol's | :09:03. | :09:09.
hospitals. The new 13.5 million plans would see an extension of the | :09:09. | :09:15.
Haematology and Oncology Centre at the Bristol Royal Infirmary. The | :09:15. | :09:20.
proposals have been welcomed by the hospital's board. It would mean | :09:20. | :09:23.
adults and teenagers could be cared for in wards that are appropriate | :09:23. | :09:29.
for their age and without changing nurses during treatment. | :09:29. | :09:32.
A fresh warning has been issued to motorists driving on beaches in the | :09:32. | :09:38.
Somerset area after another 4x4 had to be towed to safety at Berrow. | :09:38. | :09:41.
Beach wardens and the Burnham-based rescue charity BARB were called in | :09:41. | :09:44.
after a holidaymaker's car became stranded in mud several hundred | :09:44. | :09:50.
metres from the shore. Only last week, a council cleaning van became | :09:50. | :09:58.
trapped in the rising waters there. Now, he has become quite a talking | :09:58. | :10:01.
point in his home town of Yeovil since being featured on a national | :10:01. | :10:06.
TV documentary. Ken Andre is the martial arts expert who dresses in | :10:06. | :10:11.
Ninja robes to patrol the streets of the town by day and night. | :10:11. | :10:16.
Reaction to what he does has been mixed. So Clinton Rogers has been | :10:16. | :10:20.
out on the streets with him to see what drives the man who lives in | :10:20. | :10:30.
:10:30. | :10:30. | ||
the shadows. I go out there, I move in the | :10:30. | :10:33.
shadows and help people. A warrior for just causes or a | :10:33. | :10:38.
vigilante? Meet Shadow. You may not even have seen him, but he has been | :10:38. | :10:42.
lurking in the shadows of Yeovil for the last six years. He says he | :10:42. | :10:47.
is looking to keep the streets safer. Ken Andre is a 33-year-old | :10:47. | :10:54.
father of two. By day, a security guard. Being a Ninja is his hobby, | :10:54. | :11:00.
his passion. But what does his wife make of it? It is really brave to | :11:00. | :11:06.
be out there in his kit, doing what he does. You don't think it is a | :11:06. | :11:15.
bit odd? No. I would not be with him if I thought he was Bob! -- odd. | :11:15. | :11:19.
It is not just night-time that Ken assumes the role of Ninja Shadow. | :11:19. | :11:22.
During the day, he can frequently be found patrolling areas where he | :11:22. | :11:32.
:11:32. | :11:32. | ||
thinks trouble may flare. And there have been confrontations. And you | :11:32. | :11:41.
stepped in? I got as close as I can and gave a quick growl and as they | :11:41. | :11:47.
stood up I said, move on. Today, by chance, we came across the more | :11:47. | :11:50.
established law enforcers, who wanted to check what they thought | :11:50. | :11:58.
might be a Samurai sword. In fact, it is a stick made entirely of foam. | :11:58. | :12:03.
What do you make of this? It is quite unusual. Is it the right | :12:03. | :12:08.
thing to do? I don't see any harm in it, he was not breaking the law. | :12:08. | :12:11.
Mind you, the formal police view is they would prefer you to leave it | :12:11. | :12:15.
to them. And while some members of the public have clearly applauded | :12:15. | :12:21.
what Ken is doing, others are a little suspicious. I looked at | :12:21. | :12:25.
anybody with a samurai sword with a bit of suspicion! But make no | :12:25. | :12:28.
mistake - Ken believes he is providing an important public | :12:28. | :12:30.
service, breaking up trouble where it happens, calling the police | :12:30. | :12:39.
where necessary. There will be people saying, you are a vigilante, | :12:39. | :12:44.
it is wrong, back off? I am not a vigilante, I am not looking for | :12:44. | :12:48.
crime. If I see someone getting beaten up in the street, I will not | :12:48. | :12:53.
walk on by. And with that in mind, Shadow will be back on the streets | :12:53. | :13:03.
:13:03. | :13:04. | ||
In sport tonight, Cheltenham Town prepare to face their former | :13:04. | :13:10.
striker as he returns with his new club. Can Somerset's cricketers | :13:10. | :13:17.
bring home the Twenty20 Cup? Twice in the last two years, Somerset | :13:17. | :13:21.
have battled their way to the finals, only to lose out, first to | :13:21. | :13:26.
Sussex and then to Hampshire. Tomorrow, it is finals day at | :13:26. | :13:31.
Edgbaston in Birmingham. The semi- finals and the final in a single | :13:31. | :13:35.
day, weather permitting. Somerset are up against Hampshire in the | :13:35. | :13:44.
second semi-final. Cannot wait, mate. Relaxed and ready for another | :13:44. | :13:49.
crack at the final state. This talented squad have not yet won a | :13:49. | :13:56.
terrific. But there is not talk of revenge, just getting it white. | :13:56. | :14:03.
have played consistently good cricket. -- just getting it right. | :14:03. | :14:08.
We have got pivotal moments in games that can turn events. This is | :14:08. | :14:14.
massive for the club and it would be fitting to get a first trophy. | :14:14. | :14:17.
They were runners up in all three competitions last year. | :14:17. | :14:20.
Impressively, they picked themselves up from that heartbreak | :14:20. | :14:25.
to be in the hunt for the treble again. A lot of people do not think | :14:25. | :14:32.
that we can win the three competitions but if we keep giving | :14:32. | :14:36.
us the opportunities and working hard, it can happen bus-stop it is | :14:37. | :14:41.
like winning every game you play. - -. It is like winning every game | :14:41. | :14:47.
you play. This is the best Somerset team since the days of Botham, | :14:47. | :14:52.
Richards and Garner. That team was captained by Brian Rose, now on the | :14:52. | :14:59.
committee. I had many people on the day that could win in my team and | :14:59. | :15:05.
could do that in finals. That is what we have got to find. They have | :15:05. | :15:11.
got to get into the final and win. Tomorrow's match will be | :15:11. | :15:15.
psychologically crucial in the remaining competitions. Victory | :15:15. | :15:19.
will take the pressure of but losing and they would just be a | :15:19. | :15:25.
human Cynthia what happened last year. -- to earthier what happened | :15:25. | :15:31.
last year happening again. Two Somerset players have been included | :15:31. | :15:36.
in the England squad. Craig Kieswetter is in the one-day | :15:36. | :15:40.
international squad. Joss Butler, another wicketkeeper-batsman joins | :15:40. | :15:47.
him in the squad for the Twenty20 International next Wednesday. Last | :15:47. | :15:51.
season, he was the darling of the Cheltenham supporters but tomorrow, | :15:51. | :15:56.
West Thomas returns to Whaddon Road with his new club. He now plays for | :15:56. | :16:01.
Crawley Town and with wealthy backers they are favourites to take | :16:01. | :16:05.
the title. Cheltenham are gearing up for a considerable challenge | :16:05. | :16:15.
:16:15. | :16:19. | ||
from Crawley and especially with He was fantastic for his club last | :16:19. | :16:25.
season but I would like to think it we can give him a game. He had | :16:25. | :16:29.
never played so many games last season. He had a great opportunity | :16:29. | :16:37.
to score goals. But to be fair, he took it. He was certainly the jewel | :16:37. | :16:42.
in the crown of last season. It was highly impressive, 19 goals. Red | :16:42. | :16:48.
alerts to repel him tomorrow. a good goal scorer and a good | :16:48. | :16:55.
finisher. We will keep him quiet on Saturday it. You can keep him quiet | :16:55. | :17:02.
for 80 minutes and then he can score. You have got to concentrate | :17:02. | :17:07.
for the full match. I am looking forward to the game. Replacing him | :17:07. | :17:11.
is not easy. The new guard is up and running with a couple of goals | :17:11. | :17:18.
last week but neo- obvious pressure. I will put pressure on myself to | :17:18. | :17:26.
score goals. I pride myself on that. If I can continue to do that, that | :17:26. | :17:33.
will be good. Do you set targets? Not really. I have never done that. | :17:33. | :17:37.
You can set targets if you want but that does not mean you will get | :17:37. | :17:42.
that target. I just see what I have got at the end of the season and go | :17:42. | :17:49.
with that. Crawley are top of the table and have got a lot more | :17:49. | :17:55.
firepower than that. But if they come out of that game intact, | :17:55. | :18:01.
Cheltenham can send out a big message to the rest of the table. | :18:01. | :18:05.
The Cheltenham match is just one of the matches this weekend. Details | :18:05. | :18:10.
of all the matches are coming up now. Bristol City played Doncaster | :18:10. | :18:15.
it. Doncaster have been beaten in all four games so far. It is a must | :18:15. | :18:20.
win match for Bristol City. They must improve on a poor performance | :18:20. | :18:24.
against Swindon. Swindon will be hoping to build on that performance | :18:25. | :18:29.
when they play against Shrewsbury. The rugby season starts next | :18:29. | :18:33.
weekend but all the main teams are in action tonight. Gloucester take | :18:33. | :18:38.
on Russia ahead of the World Cup campaign. This is a testimonial | :18:39. | :18:42.
match for James Simpson Daniel. Bath take on Bristol. If you live | :18:42. | :18:47.
close enough, you have just got time to get down there. The Culture | :18:47. | :18:52.

popular events in the West and it is back to died after being | :20:23. | :20:28.
cancelled last year. The tolls are shipped testable -- the Tall Ships | :20:28. | :20:33.
festival has been brought back. It was cancelled last year because of | :20:33. | :20:42.
building works but they are sailing again. Here is our correspondent. | :20:42. | :20:47.
Thank you very much, good evening. Unfortunately you have joined us as | :20:47. | :20:54.
the rain has also joined us. But we have been blessed with the arrival | :20:54. | :21:00.
of beautiful sailing ships. One of these, Irene might be familiar to | :21:00. | :21:05.
viewers. She is based in Bristol and was built in Somerset. We will | :21:05. | :21:12.
be going on board later. The event was first held in 2007 it. It is | :21:12. | :21:18.
being staged for be first time since 2009. The organisers said it | :21:18. | :21:23.
brought 75,000 visitors to Gloucester and brought 2 million | :21:23. | :21:29.
to the local economy last time. Slowly but surely and watched every | :21:29. | :21:35.
inch of the way, this flotilla headed to the town. The centrepiece | :21:35. | :21:43.
of the weekend festival. It is very interesting, gas. We can hear | :21:43. | :21:50.
people talking as they travel by it. It is lovely. It is going back to a | :21:50. | :21:55.
bygone age. In it is marvellous for the area to bring them into | :21:55. | :22:01.
Gloucester, I think. It is a great attraction. It is very busy and we | :22:01. | :22:07.
have only just started. Tomorrow it will be good. The organisers say it | :22:07. | :22:12.
shines a spotlight, welcome on the town. This was the last time the | :22:12. | :22:18.
festival took place. The year the Gloucester Quays outlet was opened | :22:18. | :22:24.
by Gok Wan. He is not present this year. But the people in charge | :22:24. | :22:29.
think it will be successful even without a make a buck. It was very | :22:29. | :22:38.
popular in 2007 it. -- even without a makeover. It was great opening | :22:38. | :22:43.
this attraction. I bet we will get a good number of people this time | :22:43. | :22:49.
as well. That was definitely true today. But is it the case for the | :22:49. | :22:53.
rest of the weekend? That might be down to the great British unknown, | :22:53. | :23:01.
the weather. That is out of the organiser's hands. But they can | :23:01. | :23:04.
control the events they hope will once again bring thousands of | :23:04. | :23:10.
people to the docks in Gloucester. One of the people responsible for | :23:10. | :23:15.
that is Andrew. He is wearing the official colours of the Tall Ships | :23:15. | :23:21.
testable. What can we expect? ships is a good thing to start with | :23:21. | :23:26.
but also music and high rents and art and craft and funfairs. All the | :23:27. | :23:32.
things we would expect. The council has had to put money into the event | :23:32. | :23:39.
to make certain it happens. As the funding been secured? We are | :23:39. | :23:44.
confident because it is a much loved event. We have got local | :23:44. | :23:49.
businesses that put lead in this event. We will be back in business. | :23:49. | :23:59.

Tell us about it. How does this narrow canal work? I and from | :24:07. | :24:13.

It will get better by Bank Holiday Monday. This is the headline, | :24:51. | :24:56.
reigned one minute and showers the next. A fairly breezy spell of | :24:56. | :25:05.
weather. Temperatures getting up to 19. Pressure across the North Sea. | :25:05. | :25:12.

from the West. -- pressure. Wind getting lighter and we hope we will | :25:19. | :25:27.
get a reasonable amount of sunshine. We have had a lot of rain. This has | :25:27. | :25:32.
been speeding across the region and barely moving towards the east. | :25:32. | :25:37.
Parts of Bristol and Somerset will be affected. It will take a while | :25:37. | :25:42.
for this to disappear. A bit of thunder as well. These have been | :25:42. | :25:49.
recorded by the Met Office. These are coming across some parts of | :25:49. | :25:56.
West Gloucestershire. We cannot rule them out anywhere. We will | :25:56. | :26:03.
have more heavy downpours tonight. That will gradually disappear | :26:03. | :26:08.
towards the east and gradually reduced in intensity. Clear spells, | :26:08. | :26:13.
particularly away from the coast. Some showers across West Somerset. | :26:13. | :26:23.
But it will essentially be dry. Temperatures between 12 and 10. It | :26:23. | :26:30.
is comparatively cold tonight. Tomorrow, dry and bright. Wind and | :26:30. | :26:37.
showers getting going early. This will affect parts of Somerset and | :26:37. | :26:45.
Gloucestershire. A little bit in between. The mountains tend to sake | :26:45. | :26:53.
some of the showers up. A bit of rain in Edgbaston for the cricket. | :26:53. | :27:00.
This is coming through the Bristol Channel. That will still feed | :27:00. | :27:08.
across into parts of North Somerset, Bristol and Bath. Temperatures at | :27:09. | :27:15.
17 and 18. Not looking bad in the Forest of Dean. That event is at | :27:16. | :27:22.
6:30pm tomorrow it. Showers on Sunday. Broadly similar to Saturday | :27:22. | :27:28.
