power cuts to thousands of homes. Now we can join the news

:00:00.:00:09.

Good evening and welcome to BBC Points West. Our headlines tonight:

:00:10.:00:15.

Battered and bruised ` but better than anticipated. The clear`up

:00:16.:00:18.

continues after last night's storm brings down trees and power lines. I

:00:19.:00:28.

feel very sad the building has been damaged but it could have been so

:00:29.:00:31.

much worse and nobody was here to be heart and that is a good thing. Just

:00:32.:00:39.

ten to 20 miles made the difference of gusts of 70 mph and 16 hours per

:00:40.:00:43.

hour. Also tonight: Discrimination in the

:00:44.:00:47.

workplace ` what happened when a Muslim went for a job against a

:00:48.:00:50.

non`Muslim with an identical CV One of the grandmothers gives

:00:51.:00:53.

evidence in the case of the Bristol couple accused of killing their

:00:54.:00:56.

baby. And the Bristol City player

:00:57.:00:59.

celebrating a very special birthday and a first league win.

:01:00.:01:11.

Good evening. The West is recovering this evening after being battered by

:01:12.:01:17.

high winds and heavy rain in last night's storms. Gusts of up to 5

:01:18.:01:22.

mph caused trees to crash onto buildings and cars in dozens of

:01:23.:01:29.

homes were left without electricity. Somerset and Wiltshire where the

:01:30.:01:35.

worst affected areas in our region. The West walk to a difficult journey

:01:36.:01:41.

to work this morning. And while some could not get started, others wish

:01:42.:01:46.

to be had not tried. Driver of this car escaped serious injury. In

:01:47.:01:52.

Wiltshire, a large tree was blown down near Saint Barnabas Church It

:01:53.:01:57.

crashed into the roof of a small site building. Nobody was inside. It

:01:58.:02:07.

was very wet and windy. Gusts of wind were 60 mph. It happened

:02:08.:02:18.

quickly. When I saw that gap in the trees, I ran here as quickly as I

:02:19.:02:22.

could. That could have been someone trapped. It may not look like it,

:02:23.:02:31.

but this church has actually had a lucky escape. The tree which fell on

:02:32.:02:37.

top of the roof landed in the churchyard. Although damage is

:02:38.:02:44.

extensive, it is repairable. I feel very sad that the building is

:02:45.:02:47.

damaged but it could have been so much worse. I went into the

:02:48.:02:51.

building, expecting to see every window smashed, but not one window

:02:52.:02:56.

was broken. I don't know how many damaged gravestones might be under

:02:57.:03:00.

the tree when we move it. It began in the early hours as storms swept

:03:01.:03:06.

in from the Atlantic. Drivers had been warned to take care. In Swindon

:03:07.:03:12.

lanes were closed for most of the day with tailbacks reaching six

:03:13.:03:18.

miles. Some companies cancelled all the trains, but first Great Western

:03:19.:03:23.

soldiered on. There was no electricity at this station. With a

:03:24.:03:29.

bit of patience, people got really wanted to go. The main challenge has

:03:30.:03:35.

been the impact of the wind blowing trees down onto the railway line

:03:36.:03:45.

will stop. We need to get the trees cut up and cleared away. We want to

:03:46.:03:53.

get services back up and running. Homes were without electricity in

:03:54.:03:55.

Somerset and Wiltshire after trees came down onto his power lines. Some

:03:56.:04:06.

things are gone for good, this tree at the Bishop 's Palace is a years

:04:07.:04:14.

old but could not survive the storm. It is a big loss because we have had

:04:15.:04:22.

this tree since 1885. It replaced another tree which had fallen in the

:04:23.:04:26.

opposite direction. It was a fine specimen. Hopefully we will be

:04:27.:04:33.

planting a new one. As the clean`up continues, we are left to reflect on

:04:34.:04:37.

a night and day that test of resolve but could have been so much worse.

:04:38.:04:46.

It seems that since the storm moved across the West it has become more

:04:47.:04:48.

destructive. After all the warnings, we appear to

:04:49.:04:57.

have escaped lightly. We were very close. It is very

:04:58.:05:05.

difficult to pin these things down until the last minute. This

:05:06.:05:09.

animation shows how things progressed. Here we can see later

:05:10.:05:28.

wins. You'll also gusts of up to 70 mph. That's where we had most of the

:05:29.:05:45.

damage. This is cold, dry air coming down from around three to four

:05:46.:05:53.

kilometres up. This is what caused most of the damage during the last

:05:54.:06:07.

Great Storm. We will have a full forecast at the end of the

:06:08.:06:08.

programme. Great Storm. We will have a full

:06:09.:06:14.

forecast at Other news: The BBC s Inside Out West programme has

:06:15.:06:19.

revealed widespread discrimination against Muslims in the workplace.

:06:20.:06:23.

One Muslim and one non`Muslim applied for 14 jobs. All of the

:06:24.:06:27.

vacancies were advertised in shop windows. The non`Muslim succeeded 14

:06:28.:06:35.

times but the Muslim reporter just three times.

:06:36.:06:41.

Being unemployed is a sad reality for many young people in this

:06:42.:06:45.

country. But for young Muslim men the likelihood is much greater. Is

:06:46.:06:50.

the village and affecting their job prospects? To find out, dash`mac is

:06:51.:06:57.

a religion affecting their job prospects? These men wear similar in

:06:58.:07:09.

age and had almost identical CDs but one man wore traditional Islamic

:07:10.:07:10.

dress. In all, the two men applied for 40

:07:11.:07:30.

jobs advertised in Windows. A Muslim man was only successful in getting

:07:31.:07:35.

the job interviews. The non`Muslim reporter secured 13 interviews and a

:07:36.:07:41.

job offer. One of the businesses they visited was a supermarket which

:07:42.:07:45.

we cannot name. It had adverts in its window for three different jobs.

:07:46.:07:48.

The Muslim reporter went in first. When our second reporter in choir at

:07:49.:08:14.

about the store supervisor job ten minutes later, the same member of

:08:15.:08:18.

staff told him that there were vacancies and even helped him with

:08:19.:08:19.

his application form. In this country we have a lot of

:08:20.:08:41.

which protects against discrimination. Individual firms

:08:42.:08:44.

have these policies and we need to make sure that these policies are

:08:45.:08:48.

being applied. Responding to our investigation, the supermarket told

:08:49.:08:53.

us it has a zero tolerance policy towards all forms of discrimination.

:08:54.:08:59.

It is investigating the BBC's findings.

:09:00.:09:10.

Inside Out West will be on after the one show at 730. Stay with us, as

:09:11.:09:19.

there is much more to come tonight, including: Heartbreak for this

:09:20.:09:28.

motorcycle star. We reflect on Scott Redding's courage as he loses out on

:09:29.:09:32.

being the first British champion for 36 years.

:09:33.:09:38.

One of the mothers of a Bristol couple accused of killing your

:09:39.:09:40.

three`month`old baby has told a court how the four and took cannabis

:09:41.:09:46.

every day. It has also been revealed that they were already known to

:09:47.:09:50.

social services before the little girl or dash`mac little girl was

:09:51.:09:55.

taken to hospital. Paris Vince`Stephens died in

:09:56.:10:00.

hospital days after what the prosecution described as

:10:01.:10:04.

catastrophic head injuries. She was brought to the children's Bristol

:10:05.:10:08.

hospital but doctors were unable to save her. The prosecution claim that

:10:09.:10:19.

her mother Danah Vince and her partner either should curb or

:10:20.:10:21.

brought her head into a soft surface. Giving evidence today, Gina

:10:22.:10:28.

's mother said that the couple were always arguing and that the Nevins

:10:29.:10:39.

had thrown him out. With both families sitting in the public doubt

:10:40.:10:45.

gallery, Marie Stephens described that her son had been feeding the

:10:46.:10:48.

baby when she went all floppy and he gave her mouth to mouth will stop

:10:49.:10:53.

them being snatched the baby away, shouting what's going on. It was

:10:54.:11:01.

from this flat but she made a 9 9 call to the ambulance service on

:11:02.:11:05.

Friday afternoon. In the early hours of Saturday morning, she sent a text

:11:06.:11:09.

to Marie, telling her that the baby was not well and that if the police

:11:10.:11:12.

called, nothing had happened while she had been hoped that the flat.

:11:13.:11:19.

Marie Stephens admitted that her son suffered from learning difficulties

:11:20.:11:22.

but said there was nothing wrong with his brain. She said that the

:11:23.:11:26.

couple often hate one another and smoked cannabis every day. She said

:11:27.:11:32.

he would never heart a little kid. Both are facing charges of

:11:33.:11:36.

manslaughter and of causing or allowing the death of a child.

:11:37.:11:44.

The Swindon to football player Nile Ranger has appeared to deny charges

:11:45.:11:50.

of rape. The former Newco castle United striker was charged. He was

:11:51.:11:57.

granted bail at head of a trial which is due to take place at the

:11:58.:12:03.

start of next year. A man who ran an illegal meat

:12:04.:12:06.

processing plant which supplied fried chicken to take aways across

:12:07.:12:10.

the West has told a court he is financially ruined. At the premises

:12:11.:12:14.

in Bristol, the toilets were next to food preparation areas and

:12:15.:12:19.

underpants were used to wipe down surfaces. Kamran Ajaib has already

:12:20.:12:25.

admitted eight counts of failing to comply with food hygiene

:12:26.:12:28.

regulations. Today the court heard that he had lied repeatedly to avoid

:12:29.:12:33.

paying back any financial benefit he had made from the business.

:12:34.:12:38.

One of the world's biggest environmental groups has dropped

:12:39.:12:43.

charges over plans to build a new nuclear power station in Somerset.

:12:44.:12:47.

Greenpeace say they remain dubious about the proposals for Hinkley C.

:12:48.:12:54.

Seven days on from the big announcement and Hinkley C is this

:12:55.:12:56.

evening another step closer to actually being built. This time last

:12:57.:13:02.

week, Clinton was keen to it expressed that this had not yet been

:13:03.:13:08.

signed off. That was because there were still several legal challenges

:13:09.:13:12.

in its way, but now one has gone away. The piece is dropping its

:13:13.:13:17.

claim against the government against the granting of planning

:13:18.:13:21.

permission. Greenpeace's challenge was all about nuclear waste. They

:13:22.:13:25.

believe that the government should not be awarding planning permission

:13:26.:13:30.

without first having a long`term plan to deal with radioactive waste.

:13:31.:13:34.

But no Greenpeace have dropped that challenge, saying they believe that

:13:35.:13:37.

the gov`mac's assertion that they will be able to find something,

:13:38.:13:44.

somewhere to dump waste will be accepted by courts.

:13:45.:13:54.

The government disagrees, saying they are looking at solutions. David

:13:55.:14:01.

Cameron once again reiterated his support for Hinkley C today. When,

:14:02.:14:11.

as I hope we will, start building more nuclear power stations, there

:14:12.:14:15.

will be more work for those people to do and more skills and I think it

:14:16.:14:19.

is an important a that we have been out of four too long and we are now

:14:20.:14:24.

getting back into. Is still a challenge by the Irish National

:14:25.:14:27.

trust, and the European Union is yet to rule. But this evening, the

:14:28.:14:34.

problem dash`mac the project is a step closer.

:14:35.:14:43.

In sport, it was a busy weekend Bristol City's long wait for a

:14:44.:14:46.

league win is finally over and we are going to catch up with their

:14:47.:14:52.

hat`trick hero very sharply. It is a big night for the Somerset

:14:53.:14:55.

Rebels as they try to clinch the Premier league title. Our reporters

:14:56.:15:01.

at the track now. Although it is looking wet, the actual competition

:15:02.:15:06.

has survived the weather. If I told you it was not raining ten minutes

:15:07.:15:10.

ago it would have the truth. The heavens have just opened up now The

:15:11.:15:17.

result of that of water on the track behind me now. I have had a walk

:15:18.:15:19.

around it. We will be going ahead at 7:30pm. 15 heats to decide who will

:15:20.:15:29.

be crowned premiership champions. Somerset Rebels need to overturn

:15:30.:15:34.

Edinburgh tonight. They have come close tonight in the 13 years they

:15:35.:15:38.

have been going. Last night the mistake they just one single point,

:15:39.:15:41.

so let us hope that it stays dry and that they can win it this year.

:15:42.:15:46.

Let's talk about football. Huge relief for Bristol City to get that

:15:47.:15:52.

first league win. How long had it been since last one? Thankfully not

:15:53.:16:04.

14 years, but 2000 minutes of football. Basically far too long.

:16:05.:16:08.

Supporters were told that this would be difficulties and per Bristol City

:16:09.:16:14.

but I do not think that any of them expected it to be this hard. I have

:16:15.:16:20.

been catching up with the hat`trick hero from the match against Carlisle

:16:21.:16:25.

on Saturday, Jay Emmanuel`Thomas, who believes that the result on

:16:26.:16:31.

Saturday will be a turning point. One is the magic number for Jay

:16:32.:16:35.

Emmanuel`Thomas, a first win at the weekend and today a first birthday

:16:36.:16:39.

party for his daughter. She was just four months old when city last won a

:16:40.:16:44.

league game in March, something her dad Putin statically rated Carlisle

:16:45.:16:46.

with the first hat`trick of his senior career. `` her dad

:16:47.:16:58.

ecstatically rated. I never managed to score three in one game before,

:16:59.:17:02.

but it was a very good feeling for me when it came. The 4`2 win takes

:17:03.:17:07.

city of the bottom of the table and eased the pressure that has been

:17:08.:17:10.

building on the head coach, Sean O'Driscoll. He is a good coach and

:17:11.:17:18.

we do not want him to go anywhere. On Saturday it felt like it was

:17:19.:17:25.

getting to a point where this actuation `` the situation was

:17:26.:17:28.

getting Opera to. We had to leave Carlisle with three points and that

:17:29.:17:36.

is what we did. He now has ten goals for the season and his hat`trick won

:17:37.:17:39.

him the signed match ball to keep. It is the sort of performance which

:17:40.:17:48.

could mean that there is light at the end of the tunnel for Bristol.

:17:49.:17:57.

Does this take the pressure off Sean O'Driscoll? It does contain some

:17:58.:18:03.

praising space. It is just one when in 22 games, a lot of room for

:18:04.:18:07.

improvement. It is just as important for the players. They put in a lot

:18:08.:18:11.

of hard work on the training ground. They needed to see some reward for

:18:12.:18:14.

all that hard work that they were putting in. They have got two home

:18:15.:18:19.

matches coming up on Saturday against all the. And then on the

:18:20.:18:22.

following Tuesday against Crawley. If they stay unbeaten and pick up a

:18:23.:18:26.

couple of wins in those matches then you can see that things are

:18:27.:18:29.

improving and the pressure will drop off. If you lose on Saturday I

:18:30.:18:36.

suspect that fans will be calling into BBC Radio Suffolk today with

:18:37.:18:39.

the same old questions. If you want to watch the action again it is on

:18:40.:18:49.

the BBC open air `` calling into BBC radio. And that goal from Wayne

:18:50.:18:58.

Hennessey helped his side and their first home win of the season against

:18:59.:19:01.

Nottingham Forest. The goals in that game were not bad either. A bit of

:19:02.:19:17.

sad news, there was huge disappointment for quite chilly s

:19:18.:19:28.

Scott Redding this weekend. Quedgeley's Scott Redding. He

:19:29.:19:36.

crashed on the first lap eight in Japan and his main rival went on to

:19:37.:19:41.

win the race and therefore claim the World Championships. That is all

:19:42.:19:44.

over as far as Scott is concerned. Incredibly proud of what he has

:19:45.:19:52.

achieved the season. He is looking forward to stepping up to Moto GP

:19:53.:19:57.

next season. Keeping an eye on Scott Redding. There is a crash in there.

:19:58.:20:02.

Scott Redding has been brought down! Scott Redding crashes out the

:20:03.:20:07.

Japanese Grand Prix. And along with it his chance of winning his 20 3

:20:08.:20:12.

Moto2 title. Back at home it was an uncomfortable watch for his dad It

:20:13.:20:17.

is not nice to see anybody come off, not just because it is your son But

:20:18.:20:22.

especially when you're not there and you cannot do anything. You're

:20:23.:20:30.

waiting for a phone call from his team to let you know how he is

:20:31.:20:47.

doing. He had previously broken his wrist last week. To have it happen

:20:48.:20:53.

again, it is not a nice feeling Scott Redding had been in pole

:20:54.:20:57.

position the whole season, including winning the British Moto2 GP here at

:20:58.:21:05.

Silverstone in June. His hopes of becoming the first Brit to win a

:21:06.:21:10.

motorbike championship since 19 7 may be over, but he's determined to

:21:11.:21:15.

finish second. Want to make a good finish and I have nothing to lose. I

:21:16.:21:19.

may have another crash, but it is possible at the time you go out

:21:20.:21:24.

Valencia is last race of the season but Scott Redding has already got

:21:25.:21:27.

his sights on next year. The following day he starts training for

:21:28.:21:40.

the top`flight. No crowning moment for Scott Redding. But we are in the

:21:41.:21:50.

pits tonight for the heat. We will have the pictures for you. Hopefully

:21:51.:21:53.

that crowning moment in our ten o'clock bulletin. Back to one of our

:21:54.:22:00.

top stories, an undercover operation by BBC's Inside Out West programme

:22:01.:22:07.

has identified widespread discrimination in the workplace

:22:08.:22:14.

against Muslims. We can get action now from the MP Stephen Williams.

:22:15.:22:19.

Thank you for joining us. This investigation found a distinct lack

:22:20.:22:23.

of race equality. What is your reaction to all this? From what I

:22:24.:22:29.

have read about it, I have not seen the programme, I was quite horrified

:22:30.:22:34.

that this was still going on. Clearly discrimination is wrong

:22:35.:22:38.

whether it is on gender, race or sexuality. We are always on

:22:39.:22:42.

people's side in these cases and discrimination is unlawful. What you

:22:43.:22:47.

think should happen to the businesses? The individual

:22:48.:22:51.

businesses themselves I am sure would want to give their own side of

:22:52.:22:56.

events, but it is possible that they have committed offences, and if

:22:57.:23:00.

people had been genuinely applying for jobs or flats, they may have a

:23:01.:23:04.

case for damages, that would be what would happen in a real situation.

:23:05.:23:09.

Teasing that this is something that legislation would find it difficult

:23:10.:23:13.

to change? # do you think that this. We have had race relations

:23:14.:23:22.

legislation for many years now. Society's attitudes have changed a

:23:23.:23:26.

lot during that period and clearly the legal framework and the law has

:23:27.:23:30.

a role to play, but you are right, it is down to all of us to challenge

:23:31.:23:34.

discrimination very find it, speak up about, condemn it. Rightly so.

:23:35.:23:41.

The BBC has played an important role here in exposing it will be thought

:23:42.:23:45.

it was not taking place. It is a good job by the BBC but it is

:23:46.:23:49.

worrying that this is taking place. Does it worry you that you have a

:23:50.:23:52.

lot of work still to do to change this? It is a worry and that is why

:23:53.:23:57.

it is important that we continue, right across government, not just my

:23:58.:24:01.

department, to tackle discrimination. Both on the legal

:24:02.:24:05.

side, to have sanctions against Abel who commit discrimination on

:24:06.:24:09.

whatever grounds, but also to bring people together from different

:24:10.:24:11.

backgrounds and that is actually what my department does a lot of

:24:12.:24:16.

good work on, bringing people together from different

:24:17.:24:18.

backgrounds, different faith communities, he might otherwise not

:24:19.:24:22.

meet. They can go to a music festival together are street party.

:24:23.:24:25.

To break down those cultural misunderstandings. Thank you. Let's

:24:26.:24:32.

return to the other big story today, it was last night's storm.

:24:33.:24:41.

It has been very lively in the daylight hours. As we look back

:24:42.:24:47.

towards the story, these are the maximum bus to strengths that we

:24:48.:24:54.

have seen recorded. 70 files mph `` 75 mph. As we look towards tomorrow

:24:55.:25:08.

at least it will be a vastly improved story, many of you will

:25:09.:25:13.

have a dry day, or evade about. Some showers around but no junior is

:25:14.:25:21.

windy `` but nowhere near as windy as we have seen it today. Some very

:25:22.:25:25.

lively showers for some of you, some with hail and thunder. You saw

:25:26.:25:30.

colleague being courted by another cluster just living in from parts of

:25:31.:25:37.

Somerset. It will take off while on the first part of the night for the

:25:38.:25:43.

showers to tend to fade away. A good deal of dry weather about as the
