Adebowale show nod remorse. That is all from us. Now we join our news

:00:00.3:59:59

teams where Our main story tonight: A Christmas

:00:00.:00:18.

present for Westland. The company wins a billion pound helicopter

:00:19.:00:21.

order from Norway bringing festive cheer to Somerset. Other products

:00:22.:00:41.

and the loyal workforce. The other stories making the news tonight A

:00:42.:00:45.

widow's grief: Her husband died after apparently falling from a

:00:46.:00:49.

train ` why did the police take so long to find his body? I will not

:00:50.:00:53.

give up until I have some idea of what has happened. Fasten your

:00:54.:00:56.

seltbelts ` The planes blown around in the air and the cars that turned

:00:57.:01:00.

into boats. What will the weather throw at us next? And that's my

:01:01.:01:04.

girl! The synchronised swimmers teaching their daughters to perform

:01:05.:01:14.

just like they did. First tonight, the ?1 billion order that's just

:01:15.:01:17.

landed in Somerset's helicopter factory. At lunchtime today, the

:01:18.:01:20.

Norwegian government signed a deal for a new fleet of search and rescue

:01:21.:01:23.

helicopters, made by Agusta Westland in Yeovil. The Business Secretary

:01:24.:01:26.

Vince Cable came west to congratulate the staff, and our

:01:27.:01:28.

business correspondent Dave Harvey was there for us. We have just heard

:01:29.:01:43.

from Norway that the contract has been signed for 16 appliances.

:01:44.:01:52.

APPLAUSE They don't really do ceremony here,

:01:53.:01:56.

but for half an hour, they paused on the production line, to take in the

:01:57.:02:04.

news. You have superb products, world`class engineering and a loyal

:02:05.:02:10.

workforce. And this is what they make ` the AW101, in search and

:02:11.:02:14.

rescue mode. In the future, if you get stuck in a Norwegian fjord, this

:02:15.:02:17.

helicopter will mean the difference between life and death. For Beth

:02:18.:02:28.

Gibson, it means a good job. One of 3,200 staff here, today's deal means

:02:29.:02:32.

Beth can carry on doing the job she loves. There is nothing better than

:02:33.:02:38.

watching it go out on the pads and watching it fly. It is a huge deal

:02:39.:02:44.

but what really matters is that this is not a military aircraft but a

:02:45.:02:50.

search and rescue aircraft. This company is trying to be less

:02:51.:02:54.

dependent on the decisions made at the Ministry of Defence and more

:02:55.:03:02.

open to overseas sales. We were purely UK military but now we will

:03:03.:03:09.

be more international. It is terrific. There is still plenty of

:03:10.:03:13.

work here for the army and the Royal Navy, but the fortunes of factories

:03:14.:03:17.

like this often hang on a few key contracts. Before today, the order

:03:18.:03:20.

book was starting to look a little thin. They are building aircraft for

:03:21.:03:27.

the Italians at the moment and they have one or two after that, but it

:03:28.:03:30.

was beginning to slow down but it has now been boosted up again. What

:03:31.:03:36.

matters is their ability to export and the ability to get into the

:03:37.:03:41.

market for search and rescue helicopters. They are the best

:03:42.:03:45.

company in the world for that business and their innovation is

:03:46.:03:49.

ahead of everyone else, and it is important that we work with them to

:03:50.:03:53.

develop the market. Speeches over, it was back to work. But everyone

:03:54.:03:57.

here, and in the dozens of supply firms, will have a much happier

:03:58.:04:04.

Christmas with this deal in the bag. A shelter for homeless women in

:04:05.:04:08.

Bristol is moving into new premises after Christmas to cope with growing

:04:09.:04:13.

demand. There has been a big rise in the number of women sleeping on the

:04:14.:04:19.

streets. According to a homeless charity, last year, 45 people were

:04:20.:04:24.

sleeping rough in the city overnight, but now it is around 70.

:04:25.:04:29.

Setting up for the night in a part in the rain. That is the reality for

:04:30.:04:36.

70 people every night in Bristol. A quarter of them are women. We found

:04:37.:04:43.

one shivering from the rain in a car park with only a towel for covering.

:04:44.:04:48.

Jane said there is no provision in Bristol. There is not enough for the

:04:49.:04:55.

homeless. Basically, at the end of the day, especially if you have a

:04:56.:05:07.

dog. There are emergency places for women in Bristol and according to

:05:08.:05:12.

the Council, there are 42 women only beds, some in hostels and some in

:05:13.:05:18.

supported housing. There is a shelter that opens four nights a

:05:19.:05:22.

week and is even open on Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Each night we

:05:23.:05:27.

are open it is fully used by women from all walks of life. There is a

:05:28.:05:32.

need and there is a gap where there are needy women who are seeking

:05:33.:05:38.

refuge at night in a safe environment. In January, the shelter

:05:39.:05:46.

is moving to a new building. We will have more space. Instead of

:05:47.:05:49.

mattresses on the floor there will be proper bedroom is shared by three

:05:50.:05:57.

women. This is run by a charity relying on donations. Bristol

:05:58.:06:02.

council said the problem of homelessness is not as big as the

:06:03.:06:05.

charity claims but says there needs to be more beds in the city. We need

:06:06.:06:12.

more accommodation, not just for women but there is a population of

:06:13.:06:15.

men who are homeless. It has increased over the last 12 months.

:06:16.:06:21.

It is not very nice, you put yourself at risk. For Michelle,

:06:22.:06:29.

homeless for three month, the experience has been frightening

:06:30.:06:35.

Vulnerable to attack, scared and cold, she is hoping to get her own

:06:36.:06:39.

flat soon. That would be her best Christmas present this year. The

:06:40.:06:44.

family of a man who went missing say the police have told them his body

:06:45.:06:47.

could have been found earlier, if the investigation had been carried

:06:48.:06:51.

out differently. The body of Tom Edwards was found next to a railway

:06:52.:06:55.

line five days after a night out in Swindon. His family has now

:06:56.:06:58.

officially complained about how they were dealt with. Sabet Choudhury

:06:59.:07:06.

reports. It gets worse, it does not get better. They say time is a

:07:07.:07:12.

healer, but I would not say that. For Tom's widow, life without him is

:07:13.:07:16.

a living nightmare. The couple were married and lived together here in

:07:17.:07:19.

Calne for just over a year. What's day today life like? Hard ` never

:07:20.:07:37.

easy. You want to stay here cos of all memories here. That's why I m

:07:38.:07:43.

staying. Lots of good memories ` we got married here. It's a horrible

:07:44.:07:53.

nightmare and I dont want to leave. He is here. Tom was last seen on a

:07:54.:08:03.

night out here, Rudis Bar in Swindon, one friday night last June.

:08:04.:08:08.

He was given a lift by police to a bus stop over there before he

:08:09.:08:11.

eventually made it to the train station. He got on a train heading

:08:12.:08:15.

on a journey that was never completed. Desperate to find him,

:08:16.:08:17.

the family launched their own search. They appealed for help. He

:08:18.:08:26.

is unconscious somewhere, he is alive. That is what we need to keep

:08:27.:08:31.

thinking. We need to be positive. He will come back through the door But

:08:32.:08:35.

he never did. Five days later, Tom's body was found by a railway line

:08:36.:08:40.

near Chippenham Station. I didn t believe it was him. Even though they

:08:41.:08:47.

told us it was a body, I could not believe it. That's when it hit. I

:08:48.:08:52.

went to bed for first time that week. To be honest, I dont remember

:08:53.:08:58.

sleeping. I just shook all night. Police have now told the family

:08:59.:09:01.

things could have been done differently, and Tom's body perhaps

:09:02.:09:04.

found sooner ` sparing the family days of uncertainty. They've now

:09:05.:09:10.

officially complained about the police contact with Tom on the night

:09:11.:09:19.

he went missing and their search. Our sense of frustration came from

:09:20.:09:22.

the first 12 hour window where we were doing work off our own back. We

:09:23.:09:28.

were adamant from the start that something had happened because of

:09:29.:09:33.

how he was. There was no other reason why he would not have come

:09:34.:09:38.

back. The sense of frustration is because we may have got categorised

:09:39.:09:44.

and because he was a man who went out drinking. Wiltshire Police have

:09:45.:09:47.

already investigated themselves because they'd had contact with Tom

:09:48.:09:51.

before his death. They told us lessons have been learnt. They're

:09:52.:09:54.

now re`investigating after the family complaint. The events

:09:55.:10:02.

surrounding Tom's death still remain a mystery. An inquest next year may

:10:03.:10:06.

provide some answers for his family. A family trying to come to terms

:10:07.:10:10.

with losing a brother, a son and a husband. In the film, you can feel

:10:11.:10:23.

the pain and grief of the family. What have the police said? Nothing.

:10:24.:10:31.

The complaint is still being investigated and the inquest into

:10:32.:10:34.

Tom's death is due to take place next year. We approached the

:10:35.:10:39.

commissioner about this and he said it was an operational matter. There

:10:40.:10:43.

is still a lot of mystery surrounding what happened to Tom.

:10:44.:10:49.

The family feel that the inquest may answer some of those questions but

:10:50.:10:54.

they are hopeful that whatever happens, lessons are learned into

:10:55.:11:00.

how the police carry out searches into missing people in the future.

:11:01.:11:11.

Thank you. Only six days until Christmas, and only one day at

:11:12.:11:18.

school for some. The last day for first class post is tomorrow. Coming

:11:19.:11:26.

up: Like mother, like daughter. The synchronised swimmers keeping it

:11:27.:11:34.

harmonious in the pool and at home. A number of police stations across

:11:35.:11:37.

Bristol are under threat of closure as part of cuts being planned by

:11:38.:11:41.

senior officers as a direct result of Government spending reductions.

:11:42.:11:44.

There are concerns tonight that the closures could result in longer

:11:45.:11:50.

response times. This exclusive report by our Home Affairs

:11:51.:11:56.

Correspondent, Steve Brodie. Rank and file officers are angry after

:11:57.:11:59.

being told that a number of stations including Trinity Road and Broadbury

:12:00.:12:02.

Road, which provide 24 hour a day response teams, could close by the

:12:03.:12:06.

middle of next year. Part of the plan will see those teams being

:12:07.:12:09.

moved to Kenneth Steel House in St Philips. Officers have told the BBC

:12:10.:12:12.

that senior officers have warned them about possible closures.

:12:13.:12:15.

Trinity Road in particular is mentioned in this question and

:12:16.:12:22.

answer session. The Police Federation claims there will be

:12:23.:12:25.

potentially dangerous delays in responding to incidents as it will

:12:26.:12:28.

take longer to transport people under arrest to the new custody

:12:29.:12:35.

suites at Patchway and at Keynsham. Everything is on the table and is

:12:36.:12:40.

dependent on the new operating model. If we start closing police

:12:41.:12:51.

nations, `` stations, these are communities, people see these as

:12:52.:12:57.

safe havens where they can go to. Tonight, the force said that Trinity

:12:58.:13:00.

Road was not going to close immediately but Bristol's district

:13:01.:13:02.

commander, John Stratford would not rule out possible future closures

:13:03.:13:05.

following the publication of a review in the New Year. I cannot

:13:06.:13:13.

rule closures out. We have to make tough decisions going forward. We

:13:14.:13:16.

have to spend money and we would rather spend the money putting

:13:17.:13:20.

police officers on the street than retaining a large stock of expensive

:13:21.:13:24.

buildings. What is certain is that the custody suite here at Trinity

:13:25.:13:27.

Road will close and the station s car park is to be sold off. Next in

:13:28.:13:32.

line for the possible axe are the stations at fish ponds where the

:13:33.:13:35.

lease on the building is running out and is proving too expensive to

:13:36.:13:38.

renew, and Southmead once the Patchway complex is up and running.

:13:39.:13:41.

News of these possible closures comes the day after it was revealed

:13:42.:13:45.

that the number of police dog teams are to be dramatically reduced as

:13:46.:13:48.

part of a collaboration between the Avon Somerset, Wiltshire and

:13:49.:13:51.

Gloucestershire forces. Even Ronnie, the police dog who has his own

:13:52.:13:55.

Twitter account is to be retired and his handler moved to different role.

:13:56.:13:59.

The review of property is just part of the force's battle to cut another

:14:00.:14:05.

?15 million from its budget. We should know for sure where those

:14:06.:14:11.

cuts will fall in the New Year. A man arrested in connection with the

:14:12.:14:14.

murder of Melanie Hall has been re`bailed until February next year.

:14:15.:14:17.

Melanie, who was 25, was last seen alive leaving a Bath nightclub in

:14:18.:14:21.

1996. Her remains were found four years ago next to a slip road off

:14:22.:14:25.

the M5 near Thornbury. The man, who's 44, was detained at his home

:14:26.:14:28.

in Bath last month. Police say he's now been re`bailed while they

:14:29.:14:38.

continue their investigation. The Secretary of State for Communities

:14:39.:14:42.

has dismissed an appeal by Tesco to build a store at the former Bath

:14:43.:14:48.

Press site. The supermarket wanted to redevelop land on Lower Bristol

:14:49.:14:54.

Road. But Eric Pickles has refused to grant planning permission. He

:14:55.:15:01.

says the plan would have a harmful impact on the shops on the nearby

:15:02.:15:04.

Moorland Road. Tesco says it's disappointed and that its plan had

:15:05.:15:07.

offered significant investment in the city. The police have seized

:15:08.:15:10.

?200,000 worth of products in a raid on a shop in Taunton which sells

:15:11.:15:14.

legal highs. Officers from Avon and Somerset searched the shop on Bridge

:15:15.:15:17.

Street after information from the public about suspected illegal

:15:18.:15:20.

drugs. The police say various substances were seized and they re

:15:21.:15:31.

now being sent for forensic testing. It's been built to help transform

:15:32.:15:34.

public perceptions of the Bristol Royal Infirmary ` but there's been a

:15:35.:15:38.

mixed reaction to the hospital's new "welcome centre". The entrance foyer

:15:39.:15:42.

is part of a multi`million pound project to improve the building s

:15:43.:15:45.

appearance ` but not everyone's been impressed by the new design. Here's

:15:46.:15:59.

Jules Hyam. It is one of the country's oldest infirmaries `

:16:00.:16:02.

dating back originally to 1735 but its 1970's facade doesn't really

:16:03.:16:05.

sell the place as a centre of excellence. The University Hospital

:16:06.:16:15.

Trust has raised? 80 million to transform the outside ` and

:16:16.:16:21.

re`organise services on the inside. The first and most visible change so

:16:22.:16:25.

far ` the new "welcome centre". It's meant to provide a sense of arrival

:16:26.:16:29.

` offer waiting space and generate income from retails ` but does it

:16:30.:16:33.

say hospital ` or coffee shop? It looks like a coffee shop but it is

:16:34.:16:36.

more professional. It is a nice environment. I would rather have

:16:37.:16:44.

this than the old building. It is more modern, that is the way it

:16:45.:16:48.

should be. Take the drabness away from everything. The trust is only

:16:49.:16:53.

part way through the whole project and it is a big one. Next is the new

:16:54.:16:58.

facade. Three artists and three architectural practices put forward

:16:59.:17:05.

ideas. This was the winner. Light and bright, the hospital said it

:17:06.:17:10.

best reflected their clinical excellence. It made a good first

:17:11.:17:13.

impression and was a big improvement on what has been long regarded as

:17:14.:17:16.

one of the least attractive loadings in Bristol. Work on the new look

:17:17.:17:21.

facade should start not too long into the New Year. The Mayor of

:17:22.:17:31.

Swindon approaches a vote of no confidence tonight after making

:17:32.:17:38.

derogatory remarks, allegedly, about children with learning disabilities.

:17:39.:17:58.

He is a Conservative councillor and in October he was at a private event

:17:59.:18:03.

and the conversation got round to talking about adults with learning

:18:04.:18:08.

disabilities. It is alleged that he referred to adults with Down's

:18:09.:18:13.

syndrome in a derogatory manner He questioned whether they should still

:18:14.:18:17.

be allowed to have children. The whole matter is still being looked

:18:18.:18:20.

at by the standards committee but they do not report back until next

:18:21.:18:25.

year. Tonight we have a vote of confidence, asking the Mayor to

:18:26.:18:29.

resign. I have spoken to the Mayor and he said that whatever remarks he

:18:30.:18:33.

made was spoken in private and they should not be used to attack him in

:18:34.:18:38.

a public office. I put that point to the Labour leader. This was not a

:18:39.:18:45.

private meeting. It was attended by councillors from all parties and it

:18:46.:18:48.

is unacceptable for anyone to make such remarks in any forum nowadays.

:18:49.:18:54.

He has let down the people of Swindon. We cannot wait for the

:18:55.:18:59.

standards committee report. We cannot have an unfit Mayor for three

:19:00.:19:04.

months. Are their allegations that politics has become embroiled in all

:19:05.:19:11.

this? Very much so, yes. The Labour only have a majority of one so

:19:12.:19:16.

opposition parties will do what they can to disgraced them as the Tories

:19:17.:19:20.

try to gain ground. The committee can suspend him but it is ultimately

:19:21.:19:27.

up to the public to unseat him. One final note of irony, the Mayor will

:19:28.:19:33.

share a meeting tonight and he will have to cast the vote. Thank you.

:19:34.:19:40.

Now, preparing the Christmas dinner can be a challenge of epic

:19:41.:19:44.

proportions for many of us ` but now help is at hand. A community group

:19:45.:19:52.

in Somerset ` appropriately called Bubble and Speak encourages people

:19:53.:19:54.

to get cooking. This year they're helping one of their members to cook

:19:55.:19:58.

the festive feast for her family for the very first time. Simon Lewis

:19:59.:20:04.

went to find out more. Cooking your first Christmas dinner for the

:20:05.:20:08.

family can be daunting. For this woman it is especially so. She is

:20:09.:20:13.

registered blind. This year I decided to cook and not allow my

:20:14.:20:20.

family to do it for me, and that gives me a bit more independence.

:20:21.:20:25.

Although she has always been a keen cook, it is thanks to this group,

:20:26.:20:32.

Bubble and Speak, who have given her the confidence to tackle a festive

:20:33.:20:38.

epic. You have more things to cook at Christmas such as pigs in

:20:39.:20:44.

blankets and Yorkshire puddings and everything. It is knowing, timing

:20:45.:20:53.

wise, when to put it all in and that it is cooked properly. That is the

:20:54.:20:59.

bit I will find difficult as well. As her confidence has increased she

:21:00.:21:04.

has done more in the kitchen. She is now preparing things which is great.

:21:05.:21:10.

I think that gives her the confidence to do a bit more at home

:21:11.:21:17.

because she has a number of carers who come and help her but she likes

:21:18.:21:24.

to be independent. She will be the boss in the kitchen and who knows,

:21:25.:21:28.

by next Christmas, she may have started a new family tradition. I

:21:29.:21:37.

wish I had half her confidence in the kitchen! Now, they say history

:21:38.:21:44.

repeats itself and for a group of synchronised swimmers from Bristol

:21:45.:21:47.

that's certainly the case. They ve just qualified for the England

:21:48.:21:49.

Synchronised swimming team ` coached by their mums, who all represented

:21:50.:21:54.

their country in the sport. Tracey Miller went to find out what it s

:21:55.:21:58.

like to swim in your mother's wake. These four girls are leading the way

:21:59.:22:06.

in their sport. All have qualified for the England team and have their

:22:07.:22:13.

sights on the next Olympics. They train at Hengrove in Bristol under

:22:14.:22:16.

the coaching of three ex`national swimmers. So I asked Kate, Isabelle,

:22:17.:22:22.

Chloe and Corrie, what's it like when your coach is also your mum?

:22:23.:22:29.

People think your mum has done all this stuff and now it is your turn.

:22:30.:22:37.

And competing with your sister? It is good. Sometimes we have an

:22:38.:22:40.

argument in the middle of the pool. Normally, it is OK. The mums and now

:22:41.:22:47.

coaches, Georgie, Karen and Marie represented great Britain in the

:22:48.:22:50.

90's. They all competed together and are now coaching the next

:22:51.:22:57.

generation. We are seeing them starting their pathway as young

:22:58.:23:00.

athletes, and it takes you back 40 years when you are doing the same

:23:01.:23:03.

thing. The same sport but even the mums admit the challenges are

:23:04.:23:09.

giggle when she sees pictures. It's not just the hairstyles that have

:23:16.:23:21.

changed. Luckily, our daughters are fit and they are working hard to get

:23:22.:23:26.

on the world stage. It is great for them because they have each other.

:23:27.:23:31.

There are a group of them who are driving up standards in Bristol The

future for the girls and the the Bristol Synchro club is looking

:23:36.:23:38.

promising, with funding secured for the next three years of training. I

:23:39.:23:44.

am impressed. Parts of the West were battered overnight by heavy rain and

:23:45.:23:47.

strong winds. Some flights at Bristol Airport were delayed ` while

:23:48.:23:50.

others had to make difficult landings. Drivers faced tricky

:23:51.:23:57.

conditions throughout the night too. The torrential rain also forced

:23:58.:24:00.

officials to abandon Bristol Rovers' FA Cup second round replay away at

:24:01.:24:10.

Crawley Town. Well, let's just have a look at that plane landing again

:24:11.:24:14.

from a different angle. Flight 816 coming in from Milan appeared to

:24:15.:24:22.

have a tricky descent into Bristol. The airport has told us that it is

:24:23.:24:26.

in fact a perfectly executed landing in a cross wind. And by contrast,

:24:27.:24:34.

look at these wonderful pictures. This was the sunset in Taunton this

:24:35.:24:37.

evening captured by our cameraman Steve Powell... It was so beautiful

:24:38.:24:43.

people couldn't resist stopping to capture it themselves on their

:24:44.:24:52.

phones. A red sky at night, any comments? It is improving, some

descending from aloft. Tomorrow though, will be a day where a fair

:25:08.:25:13.

part of it will be characterised by dry weather. As we get through to

:25:14.:25:18.

the evening, it is Groundhog Day. Again, another thoroughly wet and

:25:19.:25:25.

windy spell. For the time being this rain is moving away from us.

:25:26.:25:33.

Some showers speeding in behind Light dusting is of snow. Some hail

:25:34.:25:41.

as well which has been tricky on the roads. We will still get some hail

:25:42.:25:47.

feeding in from the west. As we run through the course of the night it

:25:48.:25:52.

should be less of a feature. There should be dry and initially quite

:25:53.:25:57.

bright weather. That will change into the evening. You will see the

:25:58.:26:01.

isobars tightening up and a familiar story to yesterday. Winds just as

:26:02.:26:07.

wrong and as much rainfall I suspect. For the rest of the night,

:26:08.:26:16.

the greater concern is ice. We have a yellow warning for ice across the

:26:17.:26:23.

Cotswolds. Untreated roads, 200 metres up, could be a bit dicey by

tomorrow morning. Some showers still around. Temperature is could get

down to freezing. `` temperatures. A chilly start tomorrow. Some showers

speeding in from the West but they become less of a feature as the

:26:42.:26:45.

morning goes on. Bright weather about before the cloud begins up,

:26:46.:26:50.

the winds pick up, and outbreaks of rain by afternoon. More certainly so

:26:51.:26:55.

by the evening as the wave dominates the pattern. Through the night and

:26:56.:27:05.

into Saturday it looks wet. Temperatures tomorrow will be up on

today at nine or 10 Celsius. As we looked through the course of the

week, heavy rain on Monday. Decidedly windy as well.

:27:25.:27:30.

open our advent calendar. Taken by Bill Ovel ` it's another sunset

:27:31.:27:37.

this time in Charmy Down near Bath. Beautiful, thank you. Thank you for

:27:38.:27:41.

all your photos. We will see you at 10pm. Otherwise, we are back

:27:42.:27:43.

tomorrow, goodbye. Me and Alan don't always

play by the rules. I think perhaps we should

:28:15.:28:17.

never mention it again. I'm getting wed again. I hope that's

all right. Ready when you are, kid.
