Welcome to Wales Today. Tonight's headlines. | :00:03. | :00:06.
Fewer students get the highest A- level grades - the gap with England | :00:06. | :00:10.
is widening - but the Education Minister refuses to accept Wales is | :00:10. | :00:20.
:00:20. | :00:25. | ||
falling behind. The reality is we have got an additional 7000 young | :00:25. | :00:29.
people who've got the equivalent of an A grade at A-level because they | :00:29. | :00:32.
have got the Advanced Diploma in the Welsh Baccalaureate and that is | :00:33. | :00:42.
:00:43. | :00:49. | ||
Also tonight. Parlaympian cyclist Simon Richardson is still in | :00:49. | :00:52.
critical care after being knocked off his bike in a suspected hit- | :00:52. | :00:54.
and-run. The murder of private investigator | :00:54. | :00:59.
Daniel Morgan 24 years ago. Calls to re-examine the case as part of | :00:59. | :01:08.
the phone-hacking inquiry. And we'll be out on the open sea. | :01:08. | :01:15.
Join me later to find out why the RNLI are recruiting surfers to help | :01:15. | :01:21.
keep the sea say. Don't worry, I'm not one of them! | :01:21. | :01:24.
The number of students passing their A-levels in Wales is up | :01:24. | :01:27.
slightly, but fewer are getting the top grades and, for the second year | :01:27. | :01:32.
in a row, results here are worse than in England. The pass rate, in | :01:32. | :01:36.
Wales, was 97.2% - up by 0.1%. The average for all A-levels across | :01:36. | :01:42.
England, Wales and Northern Ireland was higher, at 97.8%. The numbers | :01:42. | :01:46.
getting both the top grades fell here. 6.3% of Welsh students got an | :01:46. | :01:53.
A star - well below the UK average of 8.2%. Almost 24% of students in | :01:53. | :01:59.
Wales got an A grade, compared to 27% across the UK. Let's get more | :01:59. | :02:04.
now from our education correspondent, Ciaran Jenkins. | :02:04. | :02:10.
Good evening. I'm at University of Wales Institute Cardiff where | :02:10. | :02:20.
:02:20. | :02:21. | ||
they've been handling calls from students all day. As usual, lots of | :02:21. | :02:24.
celebrating, a bit of commiserating, but what do these results tell us | :02:24. | :02:34.
:02:34. | :02:35. | ||
about the general state of Welsh education? | :02:35. | :02:41.
But you cannot do better than that one freight grade at A-level. No | :02:41. | :02:48.
wonder at these pupils were celebrating. People's joining | :02:48. | :02:54.
thousands across the country are on track for university. I have had | :02:54. | :03:02.
four A stars in chemistry, physics, maths, I'm going on to do medicine | :03:02. | :03:10.
at Bristol. I'm going to Queen Mary to do English. I just scraped it. | :03:10. | :03:14.
want to do medicine but I applied last year and did not get any | :03:14. | :03:18.
offers because there are hardly any places available. I'm hoping to | :03:18. | :03:24.
take a gap year and getting next year. Chemistry, Abbey and biology | :03:24. | :03:32.
and A. No, really? At this college, another student his parents and | :03:32. | :03:36.
grandparents good reason to be proud. But despite the overall pass | :03:36. | :03:42.
rate in Wales creeping up slightly, numbers getting the top A star | :03:42. | :03:46.
great here are down on last year and are now 2% lower than in | :03:46. | :03:52.
England. The increase has come Froome more entries in voice. The | :03:52. | :03:57.
boys' results are not as strong as those of curls. The thing to | :03:57. | :04:04.
celebrate his more A-level entries than ever. A greater now at their | :04:04. | :04:09.
lowest for five years. In a key speech in February, the Education | :04:09. | :04:13.
Minister suggested the situation needed to improve. We have to | :04:13. | :04:17.
accept that we are not living in performance terms in public | :04:17. | :04:20.
examinations overall compared to other parts of the UK. Not enough | :04:20. | :04:26.
top grades at GCSE or A-level. despite these top grades at A-level | :04:26. | :04:29.
falling further today, the Minister insists it is a very different | :04:30. | :04:34.
story once the Welsh Baccalaureate is taken into account. It rewards | :04:34. | :04:39.
lie skills such as independent learning and work experience. | :04:39. | :04:43.
Fisher, almost 7000 students and the qualification which is claimed | :04:43. | :04:49.
to be equivalent to an A grade at A-level. Elsewhere around Wales, up | :04:49. | :04:55.
signs of just how much pressure is on power teenagers. This teenager | :04:55. | :05:01.
has had a tough morning. I came in as for the one of my modules was a | :05:01. | :05:04.
Jew. I didn't think there was right because I was away for an operation | :05:04. | :05:09.
and got predicted a seat or a B. That was the make and break | :05:09. | :05:14.
differed between me getting into university. They are phoning up now | :05:14. | :05:19.
to see what the problem this. Have you there will be up to sort it out. | :05:20. | :05:24.
Exam rare results always could be under the spotlight the share after | :05:24. | :05:28.
the World government admitted standards were not up to scratch, | :05:28. | :05:31.
and as individual celebrate across the country, there are still | :05:31. | :05:36.
questions being asked about the performance in Wales overall. | :05:36. | :05:39.
Earlier, I spoke to the Education Minister Leighton Andrews, and I | :05:39. | :05:42.
began by asking him how, with the top grades falling for the second | :05:42. | :05:49.
consecutive year, he could claim that the results were excellent. | :05:49. | :05:53.
You clearly do not understand what has happened today. We have a | :05:54. | :05:59.
record number of young people who are the chief the Advanced Diploma | :05:59. | :06:03.
in the Baccalaureate which is the equivalent of an ape grade at A- | :06:03. | :06:08.
level. We have to look at a whole picture here in Wales. We have an | :06:08. | :06:12.
increase in overall performance, an increase in the top grades and the | :06:12. | :06:16.
record number of young people who now have the equivalent of and a | :06:16. | :06:23.
crate. Let us look at the A star grade. We are up 2% behind England | :06:23. | :06:29.
and we are down on last year. That is not excellent. He was such a | :06:29. | :06:34.
cynic. The reality is we have an additional 7000 young people who at | :06:34. | :06:38.
the equivalent of and eight grade at A-level because they have the | :06:38. | :06:41.
Advanced Diploma in the back to Laurette and that is not included | :06:41. | :06:46.
in the A-level figures. Not only have we got increase performance at | :06:46. | :06:52.
A-level, we also have their 7000 JUN people with the equivalent of | :06:52. | :06:56.
an A grade. It but that is not in the figures in the bottom line and | :06:56. | :07:01.
even if it were, the A star great is still down. Can you tell me why | :07:01. | :07:06.
well students should be doing worse than in the rest of the UK? You are | :07:06. | :07:11.
failing to understand the education system in Wales. What we have is | :07:11. | :07:15.
the Welsh Baccalaureate which gives the Advanced Diploma level, | :07:15. | :07:20.
students with the university equivalent of an eight great. That | :07:20. | :07:26.
is not recognised in these figures because it is not an A-level. But | :07:26. | :07:32.
for university entry qualifications, it is the same. It is something | :07:32. | :07:38.
that the BBC News to understand. if you are saying that actually | :07:38. | :07:41.
Welsh students have outperformed those in England? No, I'm saying | :07:41. | :07:45.
that students in Wales have done well and we should be celebrating | :07:45. | :07:50.
the success of Jan people and the hard work of teachers. But if you | :07:50. | :07:56.
want -- ret results W1 us to, you would see that they have | :07:56. | :08:01.
outperformed those in England. is not what I am saying. I'm saying | :08:01. | :08:05.
we have a qualification in Wales that are not part of the figures. | :08:05. | :08:10.
7000 young people in England -- in Wales have got the equivalent | :08:10. | :08:15.
result that is not included in the A-level results. We have an overall | :08:15. | :08:19.
increase in performance, fewer people leaving school without | :08:19. | :08:23.
qualifications, and more young people doing better at the top | :08:23. | :08:26.
grades and the additional 7000 people achieving this new | :08:26. | :08:30.
qualification. If we have more people achieving top grades than we | :08:30. | :08:37.
may as well talk about the number getting A star and A. They are down. | :08:37. | :08:40.
You have talked about educational standards and yet we are doing | :08:40. | :08:44.
worse than the rest of the UK. have thousands more young people | :08:44. | :08:48.
who have got the Advanced Diploma that in the Buckle Loretta which | :08:48. | :08:56.
for university entry qualifications is worth the equivalent of an A. -- | :08:56. | :09:05.
and the buck Laureate. I am joined by Dr Philip Dixon, a director of | :09:05. | :09:11.
the Association of Teachers and Lecturers in Wales. Of these | :09:11. | :09:15.
results worse than in England? Overall, I think results are | :09:15. | :09:19.
excellent and we should celebrate the success. There is a slight | :09:19. | :09:22.
concern are the very slight dip in the top grades but nothing we | :09:22. | :09:27.
should be unduly worried about. Overall, the results for the A | :09:27. | :09:31.
levels are excellent. Are we kidding ourselves if we do not look | :09:31. | :09:35.
at the reality and say they are worse than England? They are worse | :09:35. | :09:39.
than England and Northern Ireland, we can turn that around. That is | :09:39. | :09:44.
the most important thing, how we move forward. Is there anything | :09:44. | :09:48.
inevitable about that fat? Can Wales a performer things pick up? | :09:48. | :09:53.
Yes, I did see any problem in that. Our youngsters are very able and | :09:53. | :09:57.
the teaching staff are very able. Is a question of focusing on | :09:57. | :10:03.
improving those results. Thanks very much. Here at UWIC, it's been | :10:03. | :10:06.
a busy afternoon in the process known as clearing - when pupils try | :10:06. | :10:11.
to get a place at Uni. It's been a similar story across the country - | :10:11. | :10:14.
Bangor University have told us tonight all places there have gone. | :10:14. | :10:17.
Nick Palit reports now on what happens next for our A-level | :10:17. | :10:21.
students. The phones keeping ringing here at | :10:21. | :10:24.
Glyndwr University - with A-level candidates chasing an ever | :10:24. | :10:32.
decreasing number of places. Here in Wrexham there are 7% fewer | :10:32. | :10:35.
places available this year but applications are up by 17%, as | :10:35. | :10:39.
students from the rest of the UK try to beat next year's fee | :10:39. | :10:47.
increase. By where they would have perhaps had a gap year, there | :10:47. | :10:51.
wanting to enrolled this year it rather than wait for the high of | :10:51. | :10:55.
piste next year. 18-year-old Becky Milward from Garth Olwg School near | :10:55. | :11:01.
Llantrisant has been one of the lucky ones. Her dreams of going to | :11:01. | :11:05.
University became reality today - she was so excited she came to | :11:05. | :11:11.
visit UWIC in Cardiff, where she'll be studying from September. I am | :11:11. | :11:16.
going to be studying educational studies and Wells. I'm hoping to be | :11:16. | :11:21.
a primary teacher in a well school. But not everyone was so lucky. | :11:21. | :11:24.
Garry Yau from Tonyrefail didn't get the grades he needed to study | :11:24. | :11:31.
biology in Swansea, or his insurance choice of Aberystwyth. | :11:31. | :11:36.
Leaving it for years later may not be a good choice. So I am seeing | :11:36. | :11:40.
whether I get a reply back from Glamorgan. Garry may yet be lucky, | :11:40. | :11:43.
as nine out of the ten Welsh universities do have courses | :11:43. | :11:46.
available through clearing. At Cardiff, a late increase in funded | :11:46. | :11:48.
places from the Higher Education Funding Council means this | :11:49. | :11:51.
prestigious Russell Group University will have around 300 | :11:51. | :11:54.
places up for grabs. For the first time, the number of university | :11:54. | :11:58.
places in Wales has been capped - institutions fined if they take on | :11:58. | :12:01.
more students than they've been allocated. Many school leavers may | :12:01. | :12:04.
now need to consider a different route to a career. At this | :12:04. | :12:07.
accountancy firm in Aberystwyth, nearly three quarters of the staff | :12:07. | :12:10.
do not have a degree. Taken on after A-levels, they study on the | :12:10. | :12:19.
job. It is a good opportunity their rifles going to university. There's | :12:19. | :12:22.
also the financial improvement of having worked for three years, | :12:22. | :12:27.
earned money, avoided student debt and, with that qualification they | :12:27. | :12:31.
can take them further. With tuition fees rising, and university places | :12:31. | :12:34.
becoming more scarce, many celebrating success today face an | :12:34. | :12:39.
increasingly uncertain future tomorrow. | :12:39. | :12:42.
Unfortunately, there will be some young people sitting at home this | :12:43. | :12:48.
evening badly in need of some good at five. We have it right here. If | :12:48. | :12:53.
you have missed out on a university place or Clearing, what you do | :12:53. | :12:58.
next? There are a range of options. The important thing is to take your | :12:58. | :13:03.
time and look around for the advice that is available. The key options | :13:03. | :13:07.
are bent be going into work, either full-time or part-time. How do I | :13:07. | :13:11.
get a job if I have not got a university place? You have to look | :13:11. | :13:14.
at the different career areas you are interested in and there may be | :13:14. | :13:19.
different entry points. But are their jobs out there. Young people? | :13:19. | :13:25.
There are some jobs, certainly. So, perhaps a part-time course, getting | :13:25. | :13:28.
some work experience through the voluntary sector. Another option | :13:28. | :13:33.
could be taking a gap year. We encourage of people to seek advice | :13:33. | :13:38.
and the pink when reapplying. have advisers on hand. Yes, we are | :13:38. | :13:48.
:13:48. | :13:59. | ||
ready to help everyone with regard There is a full list on our website. | :13:59. | :14:01.
He overcame terrible injuries to become a double Paralympic cycling | :14:01. | :14:05.
champion. But tonight Welsh gold medallist Simon Richardson is in | :14:05. | :14:08.
critical care in hospital once again after being knocked off his | :14:08. | :14:11.
bike in a suspected hit and run accident. He was permanently | :14:11. | :14:15.
disabled after being hit by a car ten years ago, but went on to | :14:15. | :14:18.
achieve huge success. Tonight, his dreams of competing at the London | :14:18. | :14:21.
Paralympics lie in tatters after fracturing his spine for a second | :14:21. | :14:25.
time. Simon Richardson was one of the | :14:25. | :14:32.
stars of the Beijing Paralympics. Two golds and a silver medal were | :14:32. | :14:36.
the reward for seven years of hard work. Simon had been seriously | :14:36. | :14:39.
injured after being knocked off his bike by a car in 2001, injuries to | :14:39. | :14:44.
his back and leg left him without power in his left side. He competed | :14:44. | :14:47.
on a specially adapted bike, first suggested to him by doctors who | :14:47. | :14:53.
thought it would aid his recovery. Now Simon will have to begin the | :14:53. | :14:55.
recovery process all over again after yesterday's crash left him | :14:55. | :14:58.
with a fractured spine, broken pelvis and breastbone, and only one | :14:58. | :15:08.
:15:08. | :15:10. | ||
working lung. He had a comfortable night. He has been assessed by the | :15:10. | :15:15.
consultant. I am sure that they will have a plan in how he will | :15:15. | :15:19.
recuperate from this. The heartening thing is that he is in a | :15:19. | :15:24.
stable condition. The signs are very good in terms of his recovery | :15:24. | :15:29.
from these injuries. Police say a white van collided with Simon while | :15:29. | :15:32.
he was cycling along the A48 near Bridgend yesterday morning. They're | :15:32. | :15:35.
appealing for witnesses, and a 59- year-old man from Cowbridge has now | :15:35. | :15:43.
The crash. He's been released on bail while enquiries continue. | :15:43. | :15:45.
Simon Richardson is being treated here at the University of Wales | :15:45. | :15:55.
Hospital in Cardiff. He's currently in the critical care unit with his | :15:55. | :15:59.
wife at his bedside. He's told her that he can't remember the incident, | :15:59. | :16:01.
but feels frustrated at what happened, especially so close to | :16:01. | :16:08.
the London Paralympics. If you think about what this man came back | :16:08. | :16:15.
from in 2001, he was on the podium at Beijing winning gold medals and | :16:15. | :16:20.
having an M P shortly after that. This guy can bounce back. The | :16:20. | :16:23.
Tonight, the head of British Cycling is calling for a government | :16:23. | :16:26.
campaign to highlight the issue of safety for cyclists on the roads - | :16:26. | :16:29.
as Simon Richardson battles to overcome serious injuries for a | :16:29. | :16:31.
second time. John Morgan is the chief executive | :16:31. | :16:34.
of Disability Sport Wales, and a trustee of Great Britain | :16:34. | :16:37.
Paralympics. Mr Morgan, you've spoken to Simon Richardson's wife | :16:37. | :16:47.
Amanda today. How is he? Simon is critical but he is stable. There is | :16:47. | :16:51.
a team of consultants working with him now, assessing what needs to be | :16:51. | :16:55.
done to help him go forward and to look at the corrective surgery that | :16:55. | :17:00.
he will need resulting from the multiple injuries he suffered in | :17:00. | :17:05.
the accident. His spirits are good. I was with Amanda this morning. She | :17:06. | :17:12.
is as good as you can imagine. So many well-wishers and messages of | :17:12. | :17:17.
support for Simon. He knows that the entire sector and beyond is | :17:17. | :17:22.
rooting for his recovery. It would seem his dreams of London 2012 are | :17:22. | :17:27.
over. It is a difficult time for Simon. He was working very hard and | :17:27. | :17:33.
training every day. He had come off the back of the Beijing Paralympics | :17:33. | :17:41.
and had gone into a new class. He was trying to get into the | :17:41. | :17:45.
selection zone for London 2012. It is very early days at the moment | :17:45. | :17:49.
but the injuries are serious and it could well be at the moment that | :17:49. | :17:56.
London may be beyond him. But he is an incredible, determined person. | :17:56. | :18:00.
He was knocked off his bike 10 years ago and came back to be this | :18:00. | :18:06.
champion. Do you think he will come back again? Will he compete again? | :18:06. | :18:11.
It is a remarkable story. He is in the same position 10 years on. But | :18:11. | :18:16.
Simon is so determined. That determination and self-belief will | :18:16. | :18:23.
hopefully bring him through. Can I ask you about the safety concerns? | :18:23. | :18:30.
There are calls for better cycling safety provisions on the roads. | :18:30. | :18:37.
organisations are looking to campaign for better road conditions. | :18:37. | :18:41.
Everybody has a right to use the roads and everybody has to have | :18:41. | :18:47.
mutual respect for those on the highway. There are calls for the | :18:47. | :18:49.
unsolved murder of a private investigator from Monmouthshire to | :18:49. | :18:52.
be included in the phone-hacking inquiry. Daniel Morgan was killed | :18:52. | :18:54.
in London 24 years ago. Five separate investigations have failed | :18:54. | :18:59.
to identify his killers. Daniel Morgan was found with an axe | :18:59. | :19:06.
in his head in this pub car park in south-east London in 1987. 24 years | :19:06. | :19:08.
on, the private investigator's family are still looking for | :19:08. | :19:18.
:19:18. | :19:19. | ||
answers. We have been through five investigations, failed, the | :19:19. | :19:22.
prosecution collapsed in March of this year. We need a judicial | :19:22. | :19:30.
inquiry into this case. A BBC investigation has seen evidence | :19:30. | :19:32.
suggesting Daniel was selling a story exposing police corruption to | :19:32. | :19:36.
the News of the World newspaper the week before he died. The paper's | :19:36. | :19:39.
crime editor at the time, Alex Marunchek, denies ever meeting Mr | :19:39. | :19:49.
:19:49. | :19:52. | ||
Morgan. Campaigners find it very curious that in all these years, 24 | :19:52. | :19:58.
years, that the police have never once interviewed him on the basis | :19:58. | :20:04.
of the statement that was made by the witness to at least find out | :20:04. | :20:10.
what he might be able to -- what blighty may be able to shed on the | :20:10. | :20:14.
investigation. MP Tom Watson, seen here meeting Daniel's brother | :20:14. | :20:18.
Alistair, says he wants the case to become part of the judicial inquiry | :20:18. | :20:21.
looking at wrongdoing in the media. There is more to this murder case | :20:21. | :20:24.
than meets the eye. There were five previous investigations leading to | :20:24. | :20:30.
a failed case in March of this year. It would be very helpful if we | :20:30. | :20:33.
could find out why that happened. Shortly after this Crimewatch | :20:33. | :20:36.
appeal in 2002, Detective Chief Superintendent Dave Cook and the | :20:36. | :20:42.
programme's presenter were followed by News of the World journalists. | :20:42. | :20:45.
It was claimed at the time the paper believed the couple were | :20:45. | :20:48.
having an affair, even though they were already married and had two | :20:48. | :20:51.
children. Mr Watson says he's now writing to the Prime Minister to | :20:51. | :20:53.
get Daniel Morgan's murder, and this new information, scrutinised | :20:53. | :21:00.
as part of the Leveson Inquiry. A report by the public services | :21:00. | :21:03.
ombudsman for Wales says an elderly man who died in the Royal Glamorgan | :21:03. | :21:06.
hospital three years ago may have survived if he'd been observed more | :21:06. | :21:10.
regularly by doctors. Cwm Taf health board has apologised to the | :21:10. | :21:16.
man's family and assured patients that improvements are being made. | :21:16. | :21:19.
House prices in some parts of Wales may be among the lowest in the UK, | :21:19. | :21:24.
but when it come farmland, the price tags are among the highest. A | :21:24. | :21:26.
survey by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors shows the | :21:26. | :21:33.
demand for agricultural land and prices here have never been greater. | :21:33. | :21:38.
350 acres of commercial farmland on the outskirts of Bridgend. It's | :21:38. | :21:41.
recently changed hands and the agent who negotiated the deal says | :21:41. | :21:50.
business is brisk. Farming is having a renewed optimism at the | :21:50. | :21:56.
moment. The commodity prices are resulting in the agricultural land | :21:56. | :22:01.
values being harnessed. Agricultural land is seen as a cold | :22:01. | :22:06.
type commodity. The fact that you can feel and touch it, in uncertain | :22:06. | :22:12.
times, it is sought after. average price per acre here now | :22:12. | :22:16.
stands at 6,500. Only in the north west of England is the price tag | :22:16. | :22:19.
higher at almost 7,000. In the South East, where prices are | :22:19. | :22:22.
traditionally among the highest, the average cost is below the | :22:22. | :22:26.
6,000 mark. They were taking a break from the | :22:27. | :22:30.
hard work of farming at the Denbigh and Flint Show but there was some | :22:30. | :22:38.
insight into why the cost of farmland in Wales is on the rise. | :22:38. | :22:45.
In Wales, the farms are smaller. That could be pushing the price up. | :22:45. | :22:49.
It is only Cumbria that has land values that are more now. They have | :22:49. | :22:53.
similar types of farming there. Surveyors say the trend is set to | :22:53. | :22:56.
continue with expected growth forecast in the sector over the | :22:56. | :22:58.
next 12 months. Rugby and Wales' World cup | :22:58. | :23:01.
preparations have suffered another injury blow Ryan Jones has pulled | :23:01. | :23:04.
out of the clash against Argentina this Saturday because of a calf | :23:04. | :23:08.
injury. The number eight was due to captain the side for the final | :23:08. | :23:11.
World Cup warm-up game. Martyn Williams takes over the captaincy | :23:12. | :23:21.
:23:22. | :23:23. | ||
with Andy Powell coming into the team. | :23:23. | :23:27.
Cardiff City's winning start to the season is over. They were beaten 3- | :23:27. | :23:30.
1 at home by Brighton last night who do hold onto their 100% record. | :23:30. | :23:34.
Manager Malky Mackay says he hopes to make a number of signings before | :23:34. | :23:40.
the end of August's transfer window to strengthen the squad. Glamorgan | :23:40. | :23:43.
have the upper hand in their county championship match against | :23:43. | :23:48.
Leicestershire. Surfers are being recruited by the | :23:48. | :23:52.
RNLI in Wales to help keep our seas safer. It's part of a voluntary | :23:53. | :24:02.
:24:03. | :24:04. | ||
programme in which they're taught resuscitation and rescue techniques. | :24:04. | :24:07.
The RNLI says this time of year is always busy for them and that | :24:07. | :24:10.
surfers, who spend much of their time in the water, can help save | :24:10. | :24:20.
:24:20. | :24:21. | ||
lives. We are just teaching them basic skills so that if they do | :24:21. | :24:26.
come out of hours, surfing at the beach, it is how they can rescue | :24:26. | :24:30.
and help each other get out of difficulty before calling on the | :24:30. | :24:35.
lifeboat or other emergency services. The conditions today are | :24:35. | :24:40.
fairly calm. But every beach is different. You never know what | :24:40. | :24:46.
dangers are lurking beneath the surface. The idea behind this | :24:46. | :24:49.
initiative is that if I were to get into trouble, there would hopefully | :24:49. | :24:55.
be surfers nearby to rescue me. This man's first surfing experience | :24:55. | :24:59.
was memorable for the wrong reasons. He was caught in a riptide and | :24:59. | :25:07.
swept out to sea. I realised that we were in serious trouble. You | :25:07. | :25:12.
lose so much energy flapping about. We did not know what to do. You can | :25:12. | :25:16.
get out of your depth really quickly and if you're not a strong | :25:16. | :25:22.
swimmer, you can get into serious trouble. Someone who knows what it | :25:22. | :25:27.
is like to be seconds from getting into serious trouble is this | :25:27. | :25:32.
professional surfer. He says the Carmel waters in Britain should be | :25:32. | :25:37.
treated with respect. You can never tell with the conditions, they | :25:37. | :25:43.
changed so much on the UK coast. Different people have different | :25:43. | :25:49.
knowledge, I think it is great. Among the things I learned today | :25:49. | :25:54.
was how to Paul an injured person back to shore. It his skills like | :25:54. | :26:00.
this that the RNLI say that will help save lives and help make EC a | :26:00. | :26:09.
The weather is turning much more promising tomorrow. It is the | :26:09. | :26:12.
exception. The weather is very changeable over the next few days. | :26:12. | :26:18.
We can see this on the pressure chart. There is a gap between the | :26:18. | :26:22.
two systems. It is a window of opportunity for a clear whether | :26:22. | :26:29.
tomorrow before this moves in on Saturday. Today's rain clears | :26:29. | :26:38.
It will be a chilly night in places. Temperatures falling to six degrees | :26:38. | :26:47.
Celsius. Tomorrow, a sunny start. The sunshine turning increasingly | :26:47. | :26:54.
hazy with thicker cloud spreading in from the West. Staying dry for | :26:54. | :27:00.
most of us. A bit warmer than today. Top temperature 20 degrees Celsius | :27:00. | :27:06.
in Cardiff. On Saturday, it is all change. Cloudy with rain. Blustery | :27:07. | :27:16.
:27:17. | :27:18. | ||
winds. Changeable for the weekend. Looking brighter on Sunday. | :27:18. | :27:22.
A reminder of our top storey, the number of students passing their A- | :27:22. | :27:27.
levels in Wales is up slightly but fewer are getting the top grade. | :27:27. | :27:30. |
