Welcome to Wales Today. Tonight's headlines: An investigation is

:00:19.:00:22.

underway following the death of a man, who it's thought became

:00:22.:00:24.

trapped by a metal gate while making a delivery.

:00:24.:00:28.

Also in the programme this evening: The leader and his deputy are among

:00:28.:00:30.

three councillors being investigated for their conduct at

:00:30.:00:36.

Swansea Council. We've been on the train to London.

:00:36.:00:39.

With electrification on the cards, is a billion pounds to save 17

:00:39.:00:44.

minutes value for money? In tonight's sport: It's over 40

:00:44.:00:47.

years since they last did it. Cardiff City reach the quarter

:00:47.:00:55.

finals of the League Cup. We're looking for unsung sporting

:00:55.:01:04.

heroes like Lisa. We catch up with last year's winner.

:01:04.:01:09.

And the Nutcracker like you've never seen it before. We go behind

:01:09.:01:12.

the scenes with the Welsh company making sets for productions around

:01:12.:01:22.
:01:22.:01:24.

Good evening. A 42-year-old man has died after making an early morning

:01:24.:01:27.

delivery to a wholesalers in Newport. It's thought the man, who

:01:27.:01:30.

hasn't been named, became trapped under a heavy metal gate at the

:01:30.:01:33.

back of the premises, which are on Agincourt Street in the Crindau

:01:33.:01:36.

area of the city. Police and the Health and Safety Executive are

:01:36.:01:43.

investigating. Nicola Smith reports. At just after 5:00am this morning,

:01:43.:01:46.

emergency services were called to this gateway just off a quiet

:01:46.:01:49.

terraced street in Newport. This lorry had been making a delivery to

:01:49.:01:56.

Blakemore Wholesalers. The trade entrance is through this metal gate.

:01:56.:01:59.

Hours later, the gate was on the floor. Specialist officers were

:01:59.:02:02.

checking the gate posts and the surrounding area for clues to

:02:02.:02:07.

explain how the man died. At this stage, police will only say that

:02:07.:02:11.

his death "involved the movement of heavy gates". Sid Cloud lives just

:02:11.:02:15.

a few hundred yards from where it happened. He told me that the

:02:15.:02:18.

street is always busy with early morning deliveries, but that today

:02:18.:02:28.
:02:28.:02:29.

was very different. They start coming in at around about 6:00am in

:02:29.:02:39.
:02:39.:02:41.

the morning. Sometimes its earlier. I got up at my normal time and it

:02:41.:02:51.

seemed to be -- this seems to be more activity going on. I saw the

:02:51.:02:55.

police and there were three fire engines over there. There were also

:02:55.:02:59.

ambulances as well. The man who died was 42-years-old and came from

:02:59.:03:02.

the Merthyr Tydfil area. His family are now being supported by

:03:02.:03:04.

specially trained police officers. In a statement, Blakemore

:03:04.:03:07.

Wholesalers say they are "assisting in the investigation" and pass

:03:07.:03:13.

their condolences to his family. The Health and Safety Executive, as

:03:13.:03:15.

well as Newport Council's health and safety department, are

:03:15.:03:19.

investigating. A gynaecologist who worked in

:03:19.:03:21.

hospitals across South Wales has been suspended for 12 months. Dr

:03:21.:03:23.

Priyantha Perera Kandanearachchi has been suspended with immediate

:03:23.:03:26.

effect for inappropriate sexual behaviour towards a patient and a

:03:26.:03:34.

colleague. People suffering major injuries in

:03:34.:03:37.

parts of Mid Wales will be treated closer to home. The Royal

:03:37.:03:40.

Shrewsbury Hospital is introducing a new trauma unit. At the moment,

:03:40.:03:42.

people living in north Powys have to travel to Stoke-on-Trent or

:03:42.:03:50.

Birmingham for treatment. That can mean over an hour's drive.

:03:50.:03:52.

Welsh businesses who export to Europe are watching today's summit

:03:52.:03:55.

in Brussels closely. Thousands of jobs here rely on exports and

:03:55.:03:58.

there's concern that if the Euro crisis worsens, companies here

:03:58.:04:04.

could be badly affected. I'm joined now by Russell Lawson, from the

:04:04.:04:06.

Wales International Business Council. Let's put this into

:04:06.:04:16.
:04:16.:04:16.

context. How serious is the Euro crisis for Welsh businesses? It is

:04:16.:04:22.

very serious. We do rely an awful lot on exporting and manufacturing

:04:22.:04:28.

exporter and. In Wales, the average GDP we rely on for manufacturing is

:04:28.:04:32.

24 % whereas in the rest of the UK it's only about 11 %. If we are

:04:33.:04:40.

going to be hit with a whole market and we are not able to export, it

:04:40.:04:45.

will hit Wales significantly harder than everywhere else in the UK.

:04:45.:04:51.

it going to affect jobs? There will be lost orders for companies and

:04:51.:04:56.

strict orders. They will have to look at the bottom line costs which

:04:56.:05:02.

may lead to redundancies and as a knock-on impact, that has an effect

:05:02.:05:09.

on the economy. What can be done to help businesses through this

:05:09.:05:14.

difficult period? We have been asking for a lot more support,

:05:14.:05:18.

especially for exporting businesses. We want to see the government put

:05:18.:05:24.

more money in and help and advice to get businesses to look at their

:05:24.:05:32.

goods and services to see if they are exportable. We also want more

:05:32.:05:35.

help to export to the growing market. The euro-zone is an

:05:35.:05:39.

important area but it could be affected so we need to looking --

:05:39.:05:44.

start looking at areas which are starting to grow like Brazil, India

:05:44.:05:52.

and Vietnam. But money is tight as we know. How likely is it that the

:05:52.:05:58.

government will put some money in? We are talking about small amounts

:05:58.:06:03.

of money which can have greater benefits at the bottom end.

:06:03.:06:06.

Teachers and lecturers from Wales have been in Westminster today to

:06:06.:06:08.

lobby Parliament against pension cuts. They were part of a joint

:06:08.:06:11.

campaign organised by seven education unions. They say the cuts

:06:11.:06:14.

being imposed to their pensions are too severe. The UK Government says

:06:14.:06:24.

changes are needed to ensure pensions remain sustainable. There

:06:24.:06:32.

is plenty of money in the pensions fund. Just have a rethink on the

:06:32.:06:35.

extra contributions they expect us to pay towards the pensions because

:06:35.:06:39.

they are sustainable at the moment. They have to make cuts and I

:06:39.:06:44.

understand that. But they need to do a proper review of our pension

:06:44.:06:49.

scheme. If that proves we need to pay more, that will be one thing,

:06:49.:06:52.

but they need to produce that review.

:06:52.:06:55.

A company which is taking over a third of the residential homes

:06:55.:06:58.

formerly owned by Southern Cross says it will start running 17 homes

:06:58.:07:01.

in South Wales from next month. HC- One says it's now ready to complete

:07:01.:07:04.

the transfer of the homes. The company stepped in after Southern

:07:04.:07:08.

Cross got into financial difficulties.

:07:08.:07:10.

It'll mean faster, greener and more efficient trains but

:07:10.:07:15.

electrification will come at a cost of over one billion pounds. It's

:07:15.:07:18.

still over five years away but today a service ran from Cardiff to

:07:18.:07:21.

London to demonstrate just how quick they'll be. It'll mean a

:07:21.:07:24.

saving of 17 minutes off your journey but with such a large price

:07:24.:07:34.
:07:34.:07:34.

tag, is it really worth it? Matt Murray was on board.

:07:34.:07:39.

Electric trains are the future of rail travel in the UK but today a

:07:39.:07:42.

journey to demonstrate just how fast they will be was almost like

:07:42.:07:46.

stepping back in time. With a three-course meal, business leaders

:07:46.:07:50.

and politicians were here to taste not just the lamb but also high-

:07:50.:07:54.

speed rail travel. No stops were made today to match the speed

:07:54.:08:01.

electric trains will travel at and it will mean a journey time of 1

:08:01.:08:06.

hour and 43 minutes but it will cost 1 billion. This journey

:08:06.:08:10.

between the soup -- Capital cities is an indication that Wales is very

:08:10.:08:19.

well connected. Do you really think that 17 minutes is going to make

:08:19.:08:24.

that much difference? I think good infrastructure is always going to

:08:24.:08:28.

make a difference to people doing business. People may not realise

:08:28.:08:33.

just how close Wales is. It business leaders and rail experts

:08:33.:08:36.

on board believe it will go a long way to improving business links

:08:36.:08:41.

between Wales and London. When you keep adding it up, what it means is

:08:41.:08:48.

not just 17 minutes one way, it is 34 minutes in two directions. That

:08:48.:08:52.

takes half-an-hour of the travel time between South Wales and London.

:08:52.:08:55.

That is the kind of saving we are looking for because that is the

:08:55.:09:00.

kind of saving that will encourage inward investors to look at Wales.

:09:00.:09:04.

But the line will only be electrified as far as Cardiff, a

:09:04.:09:09.

concern for commuters like this lady who works in Swansea. Her head

:09:09.:09:12.

offices in London and she thinks she will fail to see any real

:09:12.:09:18.

benefit. The electrification of the line is until Cardiff so it won't

:09:18.:09:21.

make much difference because I still have to travel between

:09:21.:09:30.

the amount of time that will be shaved off the time of the journey.

:09:30.:09:35.

A lot of the trains are already quite unreliable. Litigation is not

:09:35.:09:39.

just about speeding up the service, it is also about making a -- making

:09:40.:09:44.

it greener. These old diesel engines will be replaced and

:09:44.:09:47.

instead there will be carriages her that will mean that more passengers

:09:47.:09:53.

will be able to get on board, close to 20 % more. Today's train journey

:09:54.:09:59.

from Cardiff to London was one of the fastest in over 20 years. It is

:09:59.:10:03.

hoped that a letter vacation will make this a regular thing --

:10:03.:10:07.

electrification. Still to come tonight: Football

:10:07.:10:10.

coach Lisa Jones was our Unsung Sporting Hero last year. Who will

:10:11.:10:13.

you nominate to be this year's winner?

:10:13.:10:16.

And I'm at a new company which makes sets for opera, ballet and

:10:16.:10:26.
:10:26.:10:29.

The two most senior councillors in Swansea are under investigation by

:10:29.:10:31.

the Public Services Ombudsman. The leader, Chris Holley, and his

:10:31.:10:34.

deputy, John Hague, are facing questions about their conduct. A

:10:34.:10:36.

complaint against a third councillor is also being

:10:36.:10:46.
:10:46.:10:49.

investigated. Carl Roberts reports. A clear view over Swansea this

:10:49.:10:53.

morning and tonight, BBC Wales can reveal that the public services on

:10:53.:10:58.

his own -- Ombudsman is looking into the conduct of the leader of

:10:58.:11:02.

Swansea Council and is the pity. The complaint made about -- against

:11:02.:11:09.

Chris Holley and his deputy John Hague and the Conservative council

:11:09.:11:11.

-- and a Conservative councillor is being investigated. The

:11:11.:11:14.

investigation is believed to refer to alleged discussions between the

:11:14.:11:20.

leader and deputy leader and some opposition councillors about

:11:20.:11:24.

Conservative support for the councils up rolling Lib-Dem

:11:24.:11:28.

administration. In any male seen by BBC Wales, the deputy leader of

:11:28.:11:34.

Swansea council confirms that he met with Councillor to discuss

:11:34.:11:38.

possible projects. One of those projects included building a new

:11:39.:11:42.

path where an old one had become overgrown. The man who says his

:11:42.:11:48.

initial complaints sparked the investigation wants answers.

:11:48.:11:52.

think this is a very serious breach of the code of conduct and it could

:11:52.:11:56.

always be a breach of the law in that there are lots of safeguards

:11:56.:12:01.

about the spending of public money. All three councillors and Swansea

:12:01.:12:04.

council declined to be individual and said they could not comment

:12:04.:12:09.

because of the ongoing investigation.

:12:09.:12:12.

Tonight marks the deadline for people bidding to buy a grade two

:12:12.:12:15.

listed brewery chimney in the centre of Wrexham. Bids have

:12:15.:12:18.

already reached 900 on the auction website eBay. The town's former MP

:12:18.:12:22.

and Assembly Member, Dr John Marek, who put it up for sale, says the

:12:22.:12:29.

money raised will go to charity. Yesterday, we reported on calls for

:12:29.:12:32.

a law forcing councils to provide public toilets after many have been

:12:32.:12:36.

closed in cost-cutting drives. Well, Wales Today viewer Dave Robinson

:12:36.:12:39.

from Llandrillo in Denbighshire got in touch to tell us how he and his

:12:39.:12:42.

neighbours re-opened their local lavatories and maintain them as a

:12:42.:12:49.

community. Here in Llandrillo, they're proud

:12:49.:12:53.

of their loos. They were closed by Denbighshire Council in 1998 and

:12:53.:12:56.

the building eventually deteriorated. But after a long

:12:56.:12:58.

running campaign and careful negotiations, new toilets were

:12:58.:13:07.

officially opened in 2005. From a tourist point of view, if you don't

:13:07.:13:14.

get people to enjoy their stay, they do not come back. Only last

:13:14.:13:18.

week, I had an e-mail from a couple in West Sussex who said what a

:13:18.:13:24.

fantastic facility you've got. We will definitely come back again.

:13:24.:13:27.

rota has been drawn up so that each week, different villagers take

:13:27.:13:30.

responsibility for opening and closing the lavatories as well as

:13:30.:13:33.

keeping them clean. It doesn't come cheap. The running costs are around

:13:33.:13:36.

1,300 a year but a 2 tax per household raises 900 and

:13:36.:13:38.

Denbighshire Council contributes 500, making an annual total of

:13:38.:13:48.
:13:48.:13:51.

1,400. Many of the visitors have done more than spend a penny here.

:13:51.:13:56.

In the last year, ramblers have given donations worth more than

:13:56.:13:59.

100 towards the upkeep of the tireless. It is really nice if

:13:59.:14:02.

there is a public toilet there because you can go before you set

:14:02.:14:07.

off on the walk. Most of our members are all the people so it's

:14:07.:14:15.

more important for us to be relaxed before we start. Of course, it is

:14:15.:14:20.

frustrating if we find a place which is there but is padlocked up.

:14:20.:14:23.

The lack of public toilets across Wales means plenty of people are

:14:23.:14:26.

getting caught short, but this is one of the places where villagers

:14:26.:14:28.

have stood firm, much to everyone's relief.

:14:28.:14:35.

The day's sports news now. Here's The day's sports news now. Here's

:14:35.:14:37.

Claire. Cardiff City are through to the

:14:37.:14:40.

quarter finals of the Carling Cup. Their 1-0 win over Burnley sees the

:14:40.:14:43.

Bluebirds into the last eight of the competition for the first time

:14:43.:14:46.

in 46 years. Sachin Krishnan reports.

:14:46.:14:50.

While their league form has been a bit up-and-down this season,

:14:50.:14:54.

Cardiff have shown great resilience during their car in Cup run until

:14:54.:14:59.

last night's meeting with Burnley. Their previous matches had all been

:14:59.:15:04.

won in extra time or on penalties. Early on, Joe Mason came close to

:15:04.:15:08.

opening the scoring, grazing the post when clean through. But his

:15:08.:15:12.

moment was to come. Both sides created good chances in the first

:15:12.:15:17.

half. Both goalkeepers being brought into action. With half-time

:15:17.:15:21.

approaching, Joe Mason showed composure on the edge of the box to

:15:21.:15:31.
:15:31.:15:32.

The second half again saw chances go begging. The best for Cardiff

:15:32.:15:37.

captain Mark Hudson who headed over from six yards out. I think whoever

:15:37.:15:42.

was going to score first was probably going to win the game.

:15:42.:15:47.

Since coming here are my main objective was to win a place in the

:15:47.:15:54.

starting team. His gain intelligence belies his age. Again,

:15:54.:16:00.

tonight, his movement was fantastic. He has good players around him who

:16:00.:16:10.
:16:10.:16:15.

are helping him. I thought he led It was in the 1965-S66 season that

:16:15.:16:19.

Cardiff last reached the last eight of the League Cup. They eventually

:16:19.:16:23.

lost in the semi-finals to West Ham who at the time featured the likes

:16:23.:16:27.

of Bobby Moore and Geoff Hurst just months before they won the World

:16:27.:16:37.
:16:37.:16:37.

The likes of Manchester United and Arsenal are already in the quarter-

:16:37.:16:41.

finals with Cardiff. The draw takes place on Saturday.

:16:41.:16:44.

The hunt is on to find this year's BBC Wales Unsung Sporting Hero. The

:16:44.:16:48.

award was won last year by football coach Lisa Jones who trains girls

:16:48.:16:51.

and boys at Penydarren Club in Merthyr. Well, with the closing

:16:51.:16:54.

date for this year's entries fast approaching, we've been back to see

:16:54.:17:04.
:17:04.:17:06.

what life is like for Lisa almost Let's make some space and make the

:17:06.:17:12.

passing much easier. Lisa Jones is a lady in demand. Apart from her

:17:12.:17:16.

day job as a sports development officer, she coaches as a volunteer

:17:16.:17:20.

three football team's five nights a week. This single mum of three

:17:20.:17:23.

pours her energy into helping develop youngsters and it is that

:17:23.:17:28.

selfless devotion that saw her win that and some Hero award last year.

:17:28.:17:33.

I said I would love to rewind it back just for one moment to

:17:33.:17:38.

remember what it was like. I was so mixed with emotions, I don't know

:17:39.:17:46.

how I felt. I felt overwhelmed, I was happy, I wanted to cry. My

:17:46.:17:50.

mother was sitting there. She was absolutely sobbing. She was

:17:50.:17:56.

overwhelmed. It was a tremendous thing to win and I wish anybody

:17:56.:18:01.

looked to win it this year because it is an amazing feeling. For the

:18:01.:18:05.

club in a Merthyr, the recognition Lisa has achieved has also brought

:18:05.:18:10.

huge benefits. She was absolutely chest and I think it is recognition

:18:10.:18:15.

of what she has done and is a good advertisement for our club. A big

:18:15.:18:20.

club with around 250 playing members, it is nice for people to

:18:20.:18:24.

know that we exist. I think we are getting well known throughout the

:18:24.:18:30.

principality now. One very proud member is at least a's son, Jordan.

:18:30.:18:34.

She has been brilliant with the children. When she came in and said

:18:34.:18:38.

she had won the award, I was very shocked and very pleased that she

:18:38.:18:42.

had won because she is a fabulous coach and she is the best in the

:18:42.:18:48.

club. Lisa is the pinnacle of what the award is all about. She goes

:18:48.:18:53.

out of her way to help others in Sport and expects nothing in return.

:18:53.:19:02.

12 months on, it is still nice to be recognised. You can imagine what

:19:02.:19:08.

it was like for months a. Even people now recognise me. Now we are

:19:08.:19:12.

looking for this year's winner. Maybe there is someone you feel

:19:13.:19:16.

deserves recognition to. So is there someone you know who

:19:16.:19:19.

deserves to be recognised? Someone who goes out of their way to help

:19:19.:19:23.

others in sport? The person has to be 16-years-old or over and not get

:19:23.:19:25.

any financial reward for their efforts. Nominations close soon on

:19:25.:19:30.

October 30th. You'll find all the details on these websites.

:19:30.:19:33.

Well, from sport to the arts, and a new company in Cardiff is making

:19:33.:19:36.

stage sets for opera, ballet and musical theatre companies around

:19:36.:19:39.

the world. Yes, it started trading just four

:19:39.:19:43.

months ago and employs 40 people. It's currently refurbishing the set

:19:43.:19:45.

for Matthew Bourne's Nutcracker ballet which comes to Cardiff next

:19:45.:19:50.

month as part of its UK tour. Rebecca John has been taking a look

:19:50.:20:00.
:20:00.:20:03.

around and she's there this evening. They are busy here tonight. This is

:20:03.:20:07.

their cake and these columns have got to be ready for the English

:20:07.:20:16.

National Opera. They have got to be In the corner of a Cardiff

:20:16.:20:19.

industrial estate stand some giant lips and a cake which weighs a

:20:19.:20:24.

tonne. They're in for refurbishment ahead of Matthew Bourne's

:20:24.:20:29.

Nutcracker tour which starts in 10 days time. The deadlines are tight

- the Nutcracker props have to be ready by Friday. As does the set

:20:33.:20:38.

for the English National Opera's production of Eugene Onegin. It

:20:38.:20:41.

includes a mirrored floor and walls as well as nine ballroom columns

:20:41.:20:45.

which are eight metres high. There's also a barn wall which

:20:46.:20:55.
:20:56.:20:57.

weighs 2.5 tonnes. Scenic artists are given models like this to go on.

:20:57.:21:01.

We get given from the welders, they put the frame, and then carpenters

plier, and we build it up with this foam. We cut in the group's and put

skin ply on and then texture that. Painting is the last process.

company also employs carpenters, draughtsmen and metal fabricators

:21:22.:21:25.

who work off detailed drawings and models. Many are graduates of the

:21:25.:21:28.

Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, with degrees in theatre

design and stage management. When did you graduate? In May. This must

:21:40.:21:46.

be a great experience for you. is, I didn't expect it. I have

:21:46.:21:49.

definitely landed on my feet here. Two of the three company directors

:21:49.:21:51.

worked for Cardiff Theatrical Services for many years, a

:21:52.:21:54.

subsidiary of the Welsh National Opera. They set up their own

:21:54.:22:01.

company four months ago and haven't looked back. The Nutcracker and

:22:01.:22:05.

English National Opera's production goes on Friday and then we are

:22:05.:22:09.

straight into Oliver for Cameron Mackintosh which goes into the

:22:09.:22:13.

Wales Millennium Centre in December. Then we have got other productions

:22:13.:22:17.

coming up straight after that for English National Opera and for

:22:17.:22:26.

festivals. There is a lot of work. Beset has got to be ready by Friday.

:22:26.:22:31.

It will be loaded on to 80 trailers on Friday and driven to the

:22:31.:22:35.

Coliseum Theatre in London where dress-rehearsal start on Tuesday.

:22:35.:22:38.

The hours get longer as the deadlines approach, but the people

:22:38.:22:48.
:22:48.:22:50.

here know, without them, the show won't go on.

:22:50.:22:54.

Rhys Griffiths is the workshop manager. The deadlines are looming,

:22:54.:23:00.

how is it going? It is going well. We know we're going to have

:23:00.:23:06.

everything done and ready for Friday. What will happen on Friday?

:23:06.:23:11.

We will have a train is coming in on Friday and we will know these

:23:11.:23:15.

out and then transport them up to London. How do you do it without

:23:15.:23:20.

damaging them? It takes a lot of preparation, thinking and planning

:23:20.:23:25.

but everything is flat-packed. All this is taken into account at the

:23:25.:23:33.

drawing stage. What about the columns themselves? They are all

:23:33.:23:41.

packed strategically and put into position. What do you do then? Do

:23:41.:23:46.

you go with them? Myself and a few of the employees will go up to

:23:46.:23:49.

London and work with the stage technicians in London to assemble

:23:49.:23:53.

them and take them through the build process and handing our

:23:53.:23:58.

product over to them. If there are teething problems, you have got

:23:58.:24:06.

people who can fix it? Yes, that is my job, but there are very few.

:24:06.:24:11.

Thank you very much. Good luck. Derek is over here and I tried to

:24:11.:24:16.

get him to jump out of the cake but he is not playing ball. How is the
