Welcome to Wales Today. Tonight's headlines. Brenda is one of the | :00:02. | :00:05.
lucky ones but many older people are waiting years for vital aids to | :00:05. | :00:15.
:00:15. | :00:20. | ||
help them around their home. There was a danger I would have to be | :00:20. | :00:24.
cared for. Having it done straightaway was from a safety | :00:24. | :00:34.
:00:34. | :00:41. | ||
Also tonight, a new programme to improve our children's maths. We | :00:41. | :00:51.
:00:51. | :00:52. | ||
put the Education Minister to the test. What is seven times six? | :00:52. | :00:58.
42! Hospital shake-up. What could it mean for services near you? | :00:58. | :01:01.
And from a former car parts factory to Leonardo Da Vinci's Italy. Wales | :01:01. | :01:08.
is the backdrop for a new multi million pound TV series. | :01:08. | :01:15.
The beauty is that rather than being in various locations, we are | :01:15. | :01:21.
in historic buildings with incredible views and locations. | :01:21. | :01:24.
Figures seen by BBC Wales suggest elderly and disabled people are at | :01:24. | :01:27.
the mercy of a postcode lottery when it comes to the length of time | :01:27. | :01:30.
it takes for councils to pay for ramps, rails and lifts in their | :01:30. | :01:33.
homes. Some elderly and disabled people are waiting nearly four | :01:33. | :01:36.
times longer than others, because some councils are taking up to two | :01:36. | :01:39.
years to hand over the money. It comes as the Older People's | :01:39. | :01:42.
Commissioner for Wales says she'll take councils to court, if they | :01:42. | :01:48.
make people wait unnecessarily. Jordan Davies has the story. | :01:48. | :01:51.
84-year-old Brenda Rowley finds it easier to get around her home these | :01:51. | :01:55.
days. The retired head-teacher from Newport has had rails fitted inside | :01:55. | :02:01.
and out after a nasty fall. Her case was taken up by a charity, | :02:01. | :02:10.
which meant she avoided what could have been, a long wait in her area. | :02:10. | :02:14.
I am trying to think how we would manage if it had not been dealt | :02:14. | :02:20.
with. Going up and down those stairs, there was a danger that I | :02:21. | :02:29.
would have to be careful. Having it done straight away., from a safety | :02:29. | :02:33.
point of view, it was paramount. New figures for last year show how | :02:33. | :02:37.
fragmented the grant system is in Wales. On average Newport Council | :02:37. | :02:40.
took nearly two years, and Neath Port Talbot a year and a half, to | :02:40. | :02:44.
deliver a grant. Compare this to Merthyr Tydfil and Conwy councils, | :02:44. | :02:49.
which took less than half a year. 69-year-old Melinda Hanmer's life | :02:49. | :02:54.
is now downstairs. She had her bathroom and bedroom moved in her | :02:54. | :03:03.
Pentraeth home, a big job that took a year. It has made a lot of | :03:03. | :03:07.
difference. I do not have to worry at all about trying to go upstairs. | :03:07. | :03:12.
My bathroom is within sort of calling distance, my bed is there | :03:12. | :03:17.
if I need it. But not everyone's as fortunate as Melinda. Last week the | :03:17. | :03:20.
Older People's Commissioner for Wales said she'd spoken to a couple, | :03:20. | :03:23.
who had to climb the stairs on their hands and knees, because | :03:23. | :03:28.
their hand rail hadn't arrived, after several months. The | :03:28. | :03:30.
Commissioner says today's figures reveal the extent of the postcode | :03:30. | :03:33.
lottery and she will take legal action if councils don't improve | :03:33. | :03:43.
within a year. I do not think 700 days is acceptable. I think we can | :03:43. | :03:47.
get it right and we need to get it right. But if the only way that we | :03:47. | :03:51.
can get it right is for me to lay down guidance and use my statutory | :03:51. | :03:57.
powers their last commissioner, that is what I will do. -- then as | :03:57. | :04:01.
commissioner. Yesterday in the Assembly, the leader of the Welsh | :04:01. | :04:04.
Liberal Democrats explained how a delay was effecting one of her | :04:04. | :04:07.
constituents. I have a disabled person in my constituency having to | :04:07. | :04:12.
wash out of a bucket because of the inability of the local authority to | :04:12. | :04:16.
install a shower. In Newport, Brenda enjoys her independence and | :04:16. | :04:19.
experts say an average grant of 7,500 can keep someone out of | :04:19. | :04:25.
residential care. The Welsh Local Government Association says the | :04:25. | :04:29.
time it takes to deliver a grant has reduced. Brenda's council, | :04:29. | :04:32.
Newport, says it accepts it's been taking far too long and is putting | :04:32. | :04:38.
changes in place. Ken Skates is the Assembly Member | :04:38. | :04:41.
for Clwyd South and is a member of the Communities, Equalities and | :04:41. | :04:44.
Local Government Committee in the Assembly. People waiting up to two | :04:44. | :04:48.
years for a ramps or handrails in their homes. This isn't acceptable, | :04:48. | :04:57.
is it? Absolutely not. We must recall that as your report | :04:57. | :05:00.
mentioned that Conwy Council is one of those councils that have brought | :05:00. | :05:06.
down their average waiting time. I'm sure many other councils at the | :05:06. | :05:10.
moment not performing as good as they should be can learn good if -- | :05:10. | :05:14.
good practice. Is the committee gone to be trying to do something | :05:15. | :05:19.
about this? Absolutely. I spoke with the share of the committee | :05:19. | :05:24.
today. We must look into this as a priority. In your report you | :05:24. | :05:27.
observe that seven-and-a-half 1,000 in terms of a grant can keep | :05:27. | :05:34.
people out of residential care. -- 7,500. That can save the taxpayer | :05:34. | :05:43.
100,000. Some the most vulnerable people in Wales. Does this all down | :05:43. | :05:48.
to tight budgets? Not at all. Resemble things can be conducted by | :05:48. | :05:52.
councils to ensure that the process is swift and efficient. For example, | :05:53. | :05:56.
they can make sure there is a follow-up service in place to chase | :05:56. | :05:59.
any applications that have been sent out. There can be help and | :05:59. | :06:03.
assistance in terms of filling in those obligations. It is about | :06:03. | :06:09.
making sure that targets are set and met. A five year plan aimed at | :06:09. | :06:12.
raising numeracy standards in Welsh schools has been published. It | :06:12. | :06:15.
includes annual testing for 7 to 14-year-olds and puts more emphasis | :06:15. | :06:24.
on teaching numbers, and logic, in every subject. | :06:24. | :06:30.
We make products. We do it from Easter, we make bunny rabbit | :06:30. | :06:34.
plaques. Meet members of the Biz. Pupils here at Ynystawe Primary | :06:34. | :06:36.
School in Swansea are always developing new business ideas and | :06:36. | :06:40.
today, the Education Minister is a potential customer. It's not part | :06:40. | :06:45.
of a maths lesson but it teaches them about numeracy. They know a | :06:45. | :06:53.
lot about profit and loss. They're keen on stocks. They want to buy | :06:53. | :06:58.
into the stock market and make money. It is a lovely experience | :06:58. | :07:01.
for children. In recent years, the performance in Wales, the figures | :07:01. | :07:04.
have been pretty startling. In international tests for 15-year- | :07:04. | :07:08.
olds, Wales ranked 40th out of 67 nations for maths. In reality, it | :07:08. | :07:11.
means that pupils here are the equivalent of half a school year | :07:11. | :07:15.
behind the average. The National Numeracy Programme aims to turn | :07:15. | :07:18.
things around. From next year, 7 to 14-year-olds will sit annual | :07:18. | :07:21.
numeracy tests. National expectations will be set to better | :07:21. | :07:24.
understand how a pupil is performing and teachers will be | :07:24. | :07:26.
trained to teach numeracy, to move away from worksheet based maths | :07:26. | :07:36.
lessons and include numbers and reasoning in lots of subjects. | :07:36. | :07:39.
You have been in charge for years and yet there has not been a plan | :07:39. | :07:45.
like this in place until now. have actually improved performance | :07:45. | :07:49.
in Wales over the last decade. We have seen fewer young people | :07:50. | :07:54.
leaving school without qualifications. Standards are | :07:54. | :07:57.
probably lower across the UK in comparison with international | :07:57. | :08:02.
standards now. We have all got to raise standards. Here at GE | :08:02. | :08:04.
Aviation in Nantgarw, near Caerphilly, staff need an | :08:04. | :08:06.
understanding of numeracy to operate the tools, the computer | :08:06. | :08:09.
programmes, to analyse data. The company regularly visits schools, | :08:09. | :08:17.
something this numeracy programme wants to promote. By talking to | :08:18. | :08:24.
young people and how they are using antennae to use those skills in the | :08:24. | :08:30.
workplace, hopefully they can gain a greater understanding of why | :08:30. | :08:36.
developing the skills is important. Today, many teachers in Wales are | :08:36. | :08:40.
taking action over concerns about pay, pensions, and their workload. | :08:40. | :08:45.
There's some unease this programme will add to the problem. It takes | :08:45. | :08:49.
the same amount of time to teach a good maths lesson as a bad one and | :08:49. | :08:52.
the evidence we have for them is how to teach a good maths lesson, | :08:52. | :08:55.
so I don't think they should worry, their lives should become easier. | :08:55. | :08:58.
The benchmarks of success will be if Wales moves up the international | :08:58. | :09:01.
league tables and if more Welsh pupils leave primary school with | :09:01. | :09:04.
the basic skills they need. And, talking of basic skills, I | :09:04. | :09:07.
couldn't resist a simple maths test for the Minister. What is six times | :09:07. | :09:17.
:09:17. | :09:19. | ||
seven? Its 42! I'm glad he got it right! Well, a team from | :09:19. | :09:21.
Techniquest, the science museum in Cardiff, regularly goes into | :09:21. | :09:24.
schools to help pupils with their maths. Rebecca John is there for us | :09:24. | :09:30.
this evening. Many children come here every day to learn through | :09:30. | :09:34.
play but it also takes some of their games into schools as part of | :09:34. | :09:40.
the maths scheme. I am joined by one of those running the scheme. | :09:40. | :09:44.
Talk us through this game. Basically, it is an easy game that | :09:44. | :09:51.
children can sit around and work together and the idea is trying to | :09:51. | :09:54.
leave seven members uncovered so that they are either the same shape | :09:54. | :10:00.
or colour or odds and even numbers. They can put the shapes in whatever | :10:00. | :10:04.
way they want. One of the nice things about it is they can work in | :10:04. | :10:07.
partnership. They have to build a strategy it back -- strategy at | :10:07. | :10:13.
work logically. What do you find when you going to schools in terms | :10:13. | :10:18.
of ability? It ranges from those that are very timid and shy to | :10:18. | :10:21.
those who are really at on their maths and what to do the best they | :10:21. | :10:24.
can. With games like this, it is great because they can work | :10:24. | :10:30.
together. You can have more able to helping the less able. You can also | :10:30. | :10:40.
:10:40. | :10:43. | ||
have them working on the Rhone. -- their own. We are working in | :10:43. | :10:47.
primary schools may be added is about fun and making maths fun and | :10:47. | :10:50.
making it enjoyable. It is about making them enjoy it -- realise | :10:50. | :10:55.
they are not doing maths when they really are. Learning their tables | :10:55. | :11:05.
:11:05. | :11:07. | ||
is not find that they need to know them. -- is not fun. My son always | :11:07. | :11:12.
asks me to test the on his tables. It is partially down to the parents | :11:12. | :11:16.
to do what the teachers are trained to do in the classroom. But there | :11:16. | :11:20.
are loads of easy ways than fun games out there that parents can do | :11:20. | :11:27.
with their children. Thank you very much, Tina. I am going to get back | :11:27. | :11:32.
to my maths puzzle now. Back to the studio. | :11:32. | :11:36.
Good luck! Plans for a new shopping centre in | :11:36. | :11:38.
Pontypridd are in tatters tonight, after the developer went into | :11:38. | :11:41.
receivership. The old shops have now been demolished and the new | :11:41. | :11:44.
Taff Vale shopping centre had been due to open this summer, but it was | :11:44. | :11:47.
delayed by funding difficulties. Pontypridd MP Owen Smith said the | :11:47. | :11:50.
developer had emailed him to say receivers were being appointed and | :11:50. | :12:00.
:12:00. | :12:02. | ||
the project would not go ahead. Specialist health services are | :12:02. | :12:06.
spread too thinly and should be concentrated at five hospitals in | :12:06. | :12:10.
South Wales. That is the view of NHS managers. They have been drawn | :12:10. | :12:17.
up plans to reorganise services in hospitals from Newport to Swansea. | :12:17. | :12:21.
If you take an hour's drive along the M4 from Newport to Swansea, you | :12:21. | :12:30.
will pass a number of signs that there are hospitals nearby. Six big | :12:30. | :12:34.
hospitals are located within a few miles of the motorway. And they | :12:34. | :12:38.
provide a mix of specialist services which look after the sick | :12:38. | :12:43.
list and most seriously injured patients. But health managers argue | :12:43. | :12:48.
that set-up is now unsustainable. The present service is not | :12:48. | :12:51.
delivering a high enough quality of service to patients. Part of the | :12:51. | :12:55.
reason it is not is because of the way it is configured. The present | :12:55. | :12:59.
service means we are spreading specialist doctors too thinly at | :12:59. | :13:04.
too many sites. That means we cannot guarantee on the 20 for 7 | :13:04. | :13:09.
basis that a doctor with the right Competency compete there for the | :13:09. | :13:19.
:13:19. | :13:21. | ||
patient. -- can be there for the patient. | :13:21. | :13:31.
:13:31. | :13:39. | ||
Proposals include service is being concentrated on four or five sites. | :13:39. | :13:43.
But there is no doubt some hospitals were low services. The | :13:43. | :13:51.
plan will see the most urgent accident and emergency care | :13:52. | :13:56.
centralised in one or two hospitals. Managers insist no final decisions | :13:56. | :14:00.
have been made and that all hospitals in the region will | :14:00. | :14:06.
continue to provide most of the services they do already. The | :14:06. | :14:10.
Health Minister to they argued the NHS had to respond to the pressure | :14:10. | :14:18.
effaces. We have had a very unusual summer. We have had this | :14:18. | :14:22.
unparalleled demand for services. It is something we will continue to | :14:22. | :14:26.
see. The talk of the demographic ticking bomb and maybe we are | :14:26. | :14:34.
seeing that coming forward. It is something we are all aware of. | :14:34. | :14:37.
there is another pressure facing the NHS across Wales, they need to | :14:37. | :14:41.
fight more savings than ever before. Yesterday the First Minister Carwyn | :14:41. | :14:45.
Jones indicated that the Welsh club Med might need to give health | :14:45. | :14:50.
boards more money again this year to help them balance their books -- | :14:51. | :14:57.
the Welsh government. But what does whatever bizarre made, they are | :14:57. | :15:03.
likely to be controversial. -- whatever decisions are made. | :15:03. | :15:08.
Changing the shape of the NHS in South Wales like elsewhere will not | :15:08. | :15:18.
:15:18. | :15:49. | ||
A man who lived near a student stabbed to death in an alleged case | :15:49. | :15:51.
of mistaken identity has told a court how he was physically | :15:51. | :15:54.
attacked on his doorstep. Mohammed Tanhai told Swansea Crown Court he | :15:54. | :15:57.
had faced an intimidation campaign over a debt of 50,000. 17-year-old | :15:57. | :16:00.
Aamir Siddiqi died after a bungled contract killing at his home. The | :16:00. | :16:02.
prosecution claimed that Aamir Siddiqi died in a bungled | :16:02. | :16:04.
contracting -- killing. Mohammed Tanhai told the court he was | :16:04. | :16:06.
selling a property just a couple of streets away from when the murder | :16:06. | :16:11.
hand -- happened and that deal went wrong. He had received 50,000 from | :16:11. | :16:14.
a disc -- businessman he had been introduced to. The prospective | :16:14. | :16:18.
buyer cannot be named for legal reasons. But Mohammed Tanhai said | :16:18. | :16:21.
when he tried to pull out of the deal, he underwent a campaign of | :16:21. | :16:25.
intimidation. Mohammed Tanhai told the court that a man intending to | :16:25. | :16:29.
sell his property to turned up at his house in November 2009 with | :16:29. | :16:34.
another man. He was punched and sprayed in the face in front of his | :16:34. | :16:38.
wife and children. He told the court he was severely beaten up and | :16:38. | :16:43.
could not seek during the attack. He was then moved by police to a | :16:43. | :16:47.
safe house. The jury has previously heard the defendants Jason Richards | :16:47. | :16:51.
and Ben Hope were hired back -- by an unnamed businessman angry | :16:51. | :16:58.
because of a failed business deal. They deny murder and attempted | :16:58. | :17:01.
murder. The trial continues. The laboratory headed by the Dean of | :17:02. | :17:03.
Medicine at Cardiff University is under investigation following | :17:03. | :17:07.
allegations of research misconduct. They relate to papers produced by | :17:07. | :17:13.
the academic team there over recent years. The man in charge of the lab, | :17:14. | :17:16.
Professor Paul Morgan, remains in his post. Rhodri Lewis is in the | :17:16. | :17:20.
newsroom now. Well, it's alleged that some of the images used to | :17:20. | :17:23.
help draw conclusions from academic research have been manipulated. No | :17:23. | :17:26.
further details have been given about how they may have been | :17:26. | :17:29.
altered, but a number of articles produced by the group of academics | :17:29. | :17:33.
led by Professor Morgan have caused concern. A panel at the university | :17:33. | :17:35.
found some of them acknowledged responsibility for certain aspects | :17:35. | :17:39.
in specific articles in academic journals. As a result it decided to | :17:39. | :17:42.
launch a formal investigation. Last year, after a similar investigation | :17:42. | :17:45.
at the university, a different article by this research group was | :17:45. | :17:49.
withdrawn from a journal. That was after it was found that one member | :17:50. | :17:52.
of the team had inappropriately manipulated primary data in two | :17:52. | :17:55.
figures in the paper. The investigation at the time found | :17:55. | :17:58.
that he was solely responsible and he no longer works there, but he | :17:58. | :18:01.
was involved in preparing some of the papers now under investigation. | :18:01. | :18:03.
It's obviously important in the academic world that certain | :18:03. | :18:06.
standards are followed in academic research so that people can rely on | :18:06. | :18:13.
the conclusions. Professor Morgan, who heads the team has got a long | :18:13. | :18:15.
and distinguished career in research into this specific aspect | :18:15. | :18:19.
of biology, and he remains in post. Cardiff University says it will | :18:19. | :18:21.
need to await the outcome of the Formal Investigation Panel before | :18:21. | :18:26.
making any further comment. Soldiers who've recently returned | :18:27. | :18:29.
from a tour of duty in Afghanistan have marched through Haverfordwest | :18:29. | :18:34.
in Pembrokeshire. Troops from 223 Signal Squadron, were presented | :18:34. | :18:40.
with campaign medals after the parade. They're based at Cawdor | :18:40. | :18:50.
:18:50. | :18:55. | ||
Barracks in the town and are experts in electronic warfare. How | :18:55. | :18:58.
do you pass off Margam Castle in Port Talbot for the Medici Palace | :18:58. | :19:01.
in 15th Century Florence? One man who knows is the writer of | :19:02. | :19:04.
Hollywood hits like Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. He's chosen | :19:04. | :19:08.
South Wales as the location for his new 20 million TV series based on | :19:08. | :19:11.
the life of Leonardo Da Vinci. And he started by transforming an old | :19:11. | :19:14.
factory into a film studio, as Carwyn Jones now reports. | :19:14. | :19:18.
It opened 50 years ago. Back then they made fridges. In its heyday, | :19:18. | :19:25.
they made car parts. And now they're making television. Believe | :19:25. | :19:31.
it or not, this is the old Ford factory in Swansea. Today, it is a | :19:31. | :19:34.
fifteenth-century Italian street. Look around and you'll spot | :19:34. | :19:36.
Florence's Ponte Vecchio bridge and the doorway to the Duomo cathedral. | :19:36. | :19:40.
It's all part of a 20 million TV series, Da Vinci's Demons, which | :19:40. | :19:44.
traces the early life of Leonardo. It's the brainchild of David S | :19:44. | :19:49.
Goyer. You might not know the name, but you'll know his work. He's | :19:49. | :19:51.
written a host of Hollywood blockbusters like Batman, Blade and | :19:51. | :20:00.
the forthcoming Superman film. is more in the Batman begins vain. | :20:00. | :20:06.
Having done that, it paints with a broad canvas. It is very cinematic. | :20:06. | :20:10.
It will feel much more like a movie than a TV show. It is certainly the | :20:10. | :20:14.
largest TV production I have ever been involved in. Recreating | :20:14. | :20:17.
Renaissance Florence in South Wales has proved easier than you'd think. | :20:17. | :20:19.
The gothic splendour of Margam Castle in Port Talbot doesn't | :20:19. | :20:22.
immediately suggest the Medici Palace. But the production has use | :20:22. | :20:26.
made of the grand interiors, while the exterior shots will be a mix of | :20:26. | :20:31.
computer graphics and specially constructed sets. Something else | :20:31. | :20:34.
the programme makers found on their doorstep was a highly skilled cast | :20:34. | :20:43.
and crew. There is a huge talent base. It has remained undiscovered | :20:43. | :20:47.
for many years. But things like Doctor Who and more recently | :20:47. | :20:53.
Sherlock, it has recently brought the talent base to the fore. | :20:53. | :20:56.
Vinci's Demons is a co-production between BBC Worldwide and the | :20:56. | :20:59.
American TV network Starz. A series on this scale has proved good news | :21:00. | :21:05.
for the local workforce, everyone from craftsman to caterers. | :21:05. | :21:11.
We are seeing temporary jobs being created to the tune of over 3,300. | :21:11. | :21:16.
BRC in permanent jobs being created. -- we are seeing. It is quite an | :21:16. | :21:22.
investment in this area. We must do what we can to capitalise on that. | :21:22. | :21:25.
The programme were hit our screens in spring next year. If a second | :21:25. | :21:31.
series is Commission, it will bring more Hollywood money to South Wales. | :21:31. | :21:34.
Swansea City will find out later who they'll play in the fourth | :21:34. | :21:38.
round of the Capital One Cup. They had to come from behind to beat | :21:38. | :21:41.
League One side Crawley 3-2 last night, Garry Monk scoring a last- | :21:41. | :21:44.
minute winner. Meanwhile in the Conference, Newport County stay top | :21:44. | :21:49.
after beating Telford 4-2. Wrexham are hot on their heels in third. | :21:49. | :21:54.
They beat Barrow 3-0. Boxing, and World Champion Nathan | :21:54. | :21:57.
Cleverly says he wants to bring a big name opponent to the Cardiff | :21:57. | :22:01.
City Stadium if he successfully defends his title again next month. | :22:01. | :22:03.
Cleverly held an open training session at the ground this | :22:03. | :22:06.
afternoon, as part of his preparations to fight at the | :22:06. | :22:09.
Motorpoint Arena on 27th October. Cardiff City manager Malky Mackay | :22:10. | :22:19.
:22:20. | :22:21. | ||
and pupils from a local primary school came along to watch. I come | :22:21. | :22:25.
to a lot of the home matches in and around at training when I am free. | :22:25. | :22:32.
In all fairness, they are very supportive of me as well. Hopefully, | :22:32. | :22:36.
I can get the fight that I want here. Her grandmother was unable to | :22:36. | :22:39.
read or write, her parents left school early to run their business | :22:39. | :22:42.
and she spends several months a year missing lessons when her | :22:42. | :22:45.
family's travelling fair tours the country. But 18-year-old Shelby | :22:45. | :22:48.
Holmes from Towyn near Rhyl is just about to start an English degree at | :22:48. | :22:54.
Oxford University. Life is full of distractions for | :22:54. | :22:57.
Shelby Holmes. Coming from five generations of travelling show | :22:57. | :23:00.
people when she's not on tour she's helping to run the family's | :23:00. | :23:06.
amusement arcade in Towyn. But she's about to break with tradition | :23:06. | :23:09.
after hitting the jackpot and winning a place at Oxford | :23:09. | :23:17.
University. Not many travelling showman go to higher education. | :23:17. | :23:21.
When I said I was applying to Oxford, everyone said, that's good | :23:21. | :23:25.
but we'll see how far she goes with it! And then I got the interview I | :23:25. | :23:29.
did got a little bit more exciting and then I got an offer. That was | :23:29. | :23:35.
really exciting. And then I got the grades. It was the most incredible | :23:35. | :23:40.
feeling. Studying hasn't always been easy. Shelby missed plenty of | :23:40. | :23:45.
school while on tour with the family. I had something like a 68 % | :23:45. | :23:50.
attendance record, extremely low. The school were fantastic. Taking | :23:50. | :23:54.
my books with me, doing the fairgrounds and having to study | :23:54. | :23:59.
while on the road, it was difficult. It was harder than a lot of people | :23:59. | :24:05.
have it, I guess. If you asked it to do some reading while she was | :24:05. | :24:09.
away, she did so. She didn't tend to fall behind. She is bright | :24:09. | :24:14.
enough and sharp enough to pick it up. Shelby says travelling shows | :24:14. | :24:17.
will always be part of her life, but her proud parents think she's | :24:17. | :24:20.
moving on in more ways than one. She's got another life to leave. We | :24:20. | :24:25.
went to Oxford and had a look round. I can imagine her in there. I | :24:25. | :24:29.
turned to Michael and said, she is not coming back. She will finish up | :24:29. | :24:35.
working in the college will something. That will be her life, I | :24:35. | :24:43.
can see that. Shelby will now be permanently installed for the next | :24:43. | :24:47.
two years at Oxford University. Opportunities will open up. What a | :24:47. | :24:51.
prize will be is anyone's guess. Here's Derek with the weather | :24:51. | :25:01.
:25:01. | :25:06. | ||
I do have some good news. Things are on the mend. It is wet in | :25:06. | :25:09.
places at the moment, but tomorrow is looking drier and a bit more | :25:09. | :25:12.
settled. The low pressure that brought the recent deluge was the | :25:12. | :25:16.
most intense September storm for 30 years. Some places have well over a | :25:16. | :25:19.
month's worth of rain. One of the wettest places, Bodelwyddan in | :25:19. | :25:24.
Denbighshire. Nearly 100mm of rain since Sunday. About four inches. | :25:24. | :25:28.
These figures are from Met Office weather stations. A few of you have | :25:28. | :25:32.
recorded more rain than this. Rivers levels are now falling but a | :25:32. | :25:36.
few remain swollen. There is still one flood warning in the Lower Dee | :25:36. | :25:38.
Valley from Llangollen to Chester. This evening, heavy showers will | :25:38. | :25:42.
slowly ease. A few showers in the north and Cardigan Bay overnight | :25:42. | :25:45.
but most places becoming dry and clearer. The wind falling light | :25:45. | :25:51.
inland with some mist. Temperatures falling as low as 7 Celsius. | :25:52. | :25:55.
Tomorrow's chart shows a ridge of high pressure over Britain. This | :25:55. | :25:59.
front approaching Ireland will reach us on Friday. | :25:59. | :26:02.
So tomorrow a better day in prospect. Some sunshine in the | :26:02. | :26:07.
south and Powys. Some morning mist as well. But not completely dry. A | :26:07. | :26:10.
few showers are likely. For example in Conwy, Denbighshire, Flintshire | :26:10. | :26:17.
and Wrexham. A few showers too in Gwynedd and Ceredigion. So you may | :26:17. | :26:21.
catch a shower tomorrow but not as heavy as today. On the whole much | :26:21. | :26:29.
drier and brighter than recently. Top temperatures 12 to 15 Celsius, | :26:29. | :26:32.
with a west to north-westerly breeze. Tomorrow evening, dry for a | :26:32. | :26:35.
time, but a front will bring some rain and showers after midnight. | :26:35. | :26:40.
The wind freshening as well. On Friday, rain first thing will clear. | :26:40. | :26:44.
Followed by drier, brighter weather and a few showers. As for the | :26:44. | :26:47.
weekend, Saturday looks the better day. The odd light shower otherwise | :26:47. | :26:51.
dry. Some sunshine. Sunday will start dry but rain will spread from | :26:51. | :26:54.
the north-west during the day. Windier as well. Our picture | :26:54. | :26:59.
tonight is from Mark Roberts. Dark clouds over Lake Bala. Thanks, Mark. | :26:59. | :27:02.
Great photo. So better weather tomorrow. Drier and brighter with | :27:02. | :27:11.
just a few scattered showers. The main news from the BBC is the | :27:11. | :27:14.
weather. Hundreds of people have been forced to abandon their homes | :27:14. | :27:17.
as the most intense September stock for decades works his way across | :27:17. | :27:23.
the North of England. Just outside Newcastle, the volume of water | :27:23. | :27:27.
swept away the Foundation's office block of flats. We'll have an | :27:27. | :27:31. |
