Hello. Thursday's headlines: New figures show we're spending | :00:05. | :00:10.
less on the High Street. Now warnings our shopping centres face | :00:10. | :00:12.
tough times in the run-up to Christmas. | :00:12. | :00:15.
It's been really quiet. We're hoping it'll pick up the end of | :00:15. | :00:21.
November and into December. The Christmas lights have just been | :00:21. | :00:27.
turned on in Cardiff. I'll find out if what we spend gives retailers | :00:27. | :00:37.
:00:37. | :00:47. | ||
Also tonight: What happens to soldiers after | :00:47. | :00:50.
they've left the frontline? A review's looking at whether we need | :00:50. | :00:53.
a permanent base helping veterans in Wales. | :00:53. | :00:58.
The growing number of blind people struggling with bills. A call for | :00:58. | :01:04.
more help for those living below the breadline. | :01:04. | :01:07.
And reassurance for Sam Warburton. Dropped for the Samoa game, but | :01:07. | :01:12.
he's still the first-choice captain. Good evening. The body representing | :01:12. | :01:15.
large retailers here is warning consumer confidence is at a six- | :01:15. | :01:18.
month low, and it's fearing the worst just weeks before Christmas. | :01:18. | :01:20.
People are facing a squeeze on their disposable income and new | :01:20. | :01:26.
figures suggest we're spending less on the High Street. Well, it's | :01:26. | :01:28.
late-night shopping tonight and our Business Correspondent Nick Servini | :01:28. | :01:38.
:01:38. | :01:39. | ||
is in Cardiff for us. A drop in the amount of clothing | :01:39. | :01:43.
people have been buying has been behind one of the factors behind | :01:43. | :01:47.
the figures that have come out today. The retailers will be trying | :01:47. | :01:53.
to change things over the course of the next six weeks. It is a hugely | :01:53. | :01:57.
important time. For many retailers, they can make as many as half their | :01:57. | :02:03.
annual profits during the course of the Christmas period. If they have | :02:03. | :02:08.
a bad Christmas, it means that they have a bad year. It is a big night | :02:08. | :02:12.
in Cardiff. The Christmas lights have just come on. His is all to | :02:12. | :02:18.
get people in the Christmas mode and to spend more. So the timing of | :02:18. | :02:21.
the release of today's figures was significant because it is a | :02:21. | :02:27.
critical time for retailers as they gear up for the festive period. | :02:27. | :02:33.
This lady and owns a flat shop. She says she started Christmas early to | :02:33. | :02:37.
try to drum up trade. October was one of her was man's and sales were | :02:37. | :02:42.
down by at least a quarter. last we call two, people are | :02:42. | :02:46.
starting to look towards Christmas and starting to spend more. But | :02:46. | :02:53.
still, it is not enough. All the big stores offer so much more. And | :02:53. | :02:57.
at lower prices. The smaller retailer or does not get another | :02:57. | :03:02.
chance. From the town to the city centre, this store in Cardiff is | :03:02. | :03:06.
the largest outside of the south- east of England. So far up on the | :03:06. | :03:10.
year and in recent months, but they are not taking anything for granted. | :03:10. | :03:15.
We have got to be realistic. The economy is still fragile. We are | :03:15. | :03:20.
still trying to see growth. We have got be realistic in terms of their | :03:20. | :03:25.
approach. Christmas is going to be strong. It is a fact that we need | :03:25. | :03:30.
to stick to our who values. views of the current state of the | :03:30. | :03:35.
high street which give us a reader the Lynch snapshot of how many s | :03:35. | :03:45.
are feeling it financially. Sales of clothing and shoes was down 2.3%. | :03:45. | :03:50.
Compared with this time last year, the overall volume of sales was up | :03:50. | :03:55.
0.6%. Another standard figure today from the Office for National | :03:56. | :03:59.
Statistics was that the average weekly spend on the internet has | :03:59. | :04:04.
gone up by 11% on the year. That was reflected in the centre of | :04:04. | :04:10.
Carmarthen today. I think it is internet shopping. Piggott's take | :04:10. | :04:15.
advantage of cheaper prices. Find out where they are coming from. -- | :04:15. | :04:20.
it is internet shopping. I have bought two books for half price. | :04:20. | :04:28.
Anything big, I would go one the internet. This lady and her son | :04:28. | :04:32.
living on Deeside. She is having to make tough choices when it comes to | :04:32. | :04:35.
spending this Christmas because a few months ago, she was made | :04:36. | :04:40.
redundant from her job in a solicitor's. Last year, she says | :04:40. | :04:45.
first Christmas budget was run to 150. This year, it will be half | :04:45. | :04:50.
that. When you going to the shops, you spend money on petrol and food | :04:50. | :04:54.
one you were right because you have to buy lunch. When you were at home, | :04:54. | :04:59.
it is a lot cheaper. A lot of the things are half the price on some | :04:59. | :05:03.
websites. The high street is clearly facing major challengers. | :05:03. | :05:08.
But it has bases for a number of years now and has proved more | :05:08. | :05:15.
resilient than many have given it credit for. Some differences on the | :05:15. | :05:21.
state of the high street. Huge crowds year out tonight as people | :05:21. | :05:24.
are building up for the Christmas season. It was interesting speaking | :05:24. | :05:29.
to retailers in Cardiff there was that plague warning from the Wash | :05:29. | :05:33.
Retail Consortium, contrasted with a number of retailers hope that | :05:33. | :05:36.
they have gone through a difficult period, they are resilient and | :05:36. | :05:41.
think things are looking reasonably up. Let's have a word with a few | :05:41. | :05:49.
gusts. -- gusts. By choosing we are at in terms of the high street? | :05:49. | :05:54.
high street is not good. There is a high rate of shop vacancies. People | :05:54. | :05:59.
are spending more online. Thames cent of retail sales are not online. | :05:59. | :06:03.
Today's figures are worrying for the retail sector in the UK. The | :06:03. | :06:06.
growth is not as much as people expected and this year's sales | :06:06. | :06:10.
figures have been practically the last -- the same as last year's. By | :06:10. | :06:14.
the people are holding back for a big spending spree at Christmas, I | :06:14. | :06:18.
do not know. Let's get another perspective. What your members | :06:18. | :06:21.
telling you about what they are expecting over Christmas? It is | :06:21. | :06:27.
very difficult. They are saying that retail sales at the top of a | :06:27. | :06:30.
tree of economic indicators and businesses, all contributing. | :06:30. | :06:35.
Essentially, it means what we have got in a pocket to spend at | :06:35. | :06:39.
Christmas. If the economy and the high street is not doing well, it | :06:39. | :06:42.
is not doing well elsewhere. They have been good signs. More people | :06:42. | :06:48.
in jobs. But inflation has gone up. Normally, though things do not go | :06:48. | :06:51.
hand in hand. We do not know exactly what is going on so it is | :06:51. | :06:56.
very hard to predict what this Christmas will bring. But we have | :06:56. | :07:01.
this trade-off between the shoppers and in terms of what is happening | :07:02. | :07:05.
in terms of the Consumers'? There is already at some pre- Christmas | :07:05. | :07:09.
discounting going on. I have noticed that as I have walked | :07:09. | :07:15.
through the city centre. Consumers are looking for a bargain. They are | :07:15. | :07:18.
looking for value-for-money. They need to make their money stretch as | :07:18. | :07:22.
far as they can. So anything that gives them a deal. Anything that | :07:22. | :07:28.
gives them a way of stretching their budget will be welcomed. | :07:28. | :07:33.
are here in Cardiff city centre, a huge amount of investment in terms | :07:33. | :07:38.
of the retail. But many of your members are in town centres, a high | :07:38. | :07:41.
streets up and down the country and things are very difficult birth. | :07:41. | :07:44.
They are very difficult, but the opportunities they have got a lot | :07:44. | :07:48.
of a good as well. They have something to offer that the big | :07:48. | :07:52.
retail brands cannot give. That is something a unique, special, local. | :07:52. | :07:58.
There will be selling on value, quality, service. Adding that | :07:58. | :08:03.
something extra over and above simply a cheaper priced item. | :08:03. | :08:07.
must talk about inflation. It is the lingering thing going on in the | :08:07. | :08:11.
economy at the moment. We're out of recession. Unemployment is coming | :08:11. | :08:17.
down. But disposable cash has come down. Wages are not keeping up. | :08:17. | :08:20.
That is why people are looking to insure. There are also going up, | :08:20. | :08:25.
their wages are not going up or are even coming down, and they have got | :08:25. | :08:30.
Christmas. And I think when people are feeling the heat of a recession, | :08:30. | :08:34.
something like Christmas that can be a big celebration, they do not | :08:34. | :08:38.
think they will go without this year, so will people stop spending? | :08:38. | :08:45.
They do nothing fog so. -- I do not think so. With the small shops on | :08:45. | :08:48.
the high street, these can often be a way you can buy goods and | :08:48. | :08:52.
presents for people that you want find in the town centres. You want | :08:52. | :08:56.
find this city centres. By the degree that we should support | :08:56. | :09:06.
:09:06. | :09:07. | ||
smaller independent traders will have you can. Thank you very much. | :09:07. | :09:09.
Thank you very much. The former Conservative Treasurer, | :09:09. | :09:12.
Lord McAlpine, says he doesn't want to meet the man who wrongly accused | :09:12. | :09:16.
him of abusing him, but he says Steve Meesham is a victim and he | :09:16. | :09:18.
has sympathy with him. In an interview with the BBC, Lord | :09:18. | :09:21.
McAlpine said the Newsnight programme should've called him to | :09:21. | :09:30.
ask about the allegations. course they should have called me. | :09:30. | :09:35.
And I would have told them exactly what they learnt later on. What was | :09:35. | :09:41.
that? That it was complete rubbish and that I had only ever been to | :09:41. | :09:46.
Wrexham once in my life. They could have saved themselves a lot of | :09:46. | :09:51.
agonising. And many, actually. If they had just made that telephone | :09:51. | :09:57.
calls. He if we return briefly back to Steve Meesham, he has made a | :09:57. | :10:00.
comment that he sincerely apologises and that he would like | :10:00. | :10:08.
to meet here. Pride you feel about that? I do not want to meet him. I | :10:08. | :10:13.
see what he feels like. I do not want to go there again. I want to | :10:13. | :10:21.
get this over. I want to get it cleared up. I just do not want to | :10:21. | :10:25.
do that. Lord McAlpine speaking to the BBC's | :10:25. | :10:28.
Becky Milligan. The issue of what happens to our | :10:28. | :10:31.
veterans after they return to civilian life is one we've featured | :10:31. | :10:34.
extensively on Wales Today this year. A report by Health | :10:34. | :10:37.
Inspectorate Wales, which took evidence from 250 people associated | :10:37. | :10:39.
with the armed forces, made a series of recommendations back in | :10:39. | :10:43.
May. Among them was the establishing of a permanent | :10:43. | :10:46.
residential centre for veterans in Wales. Professor Rosemary Kennedy | :10:46. | :10:49.
has today been tasked with leading a review into whether such a centre | :10:49. | :10:56.
is needed and she joins me now. What would a centre like this do | :10:56. | :10:59.
question a kid could fulfil a number of functions. On other | :10:59. | :11:03.
things we would need to do is to look at the responses that came | :11:03. | :11:07.
back to the health inspector it Wales. Because for some people, | :11:07. | :11:12.
what they need is just a signpost through hugely complicates it | :11:12. | :11:16.
things like pensions and grants or how to get themselves into a new | :11:16. | :11:20.
career and some career development opportunities. For others, it is | :11:20. | :11:25.
much more of a lasting half a support that they need. And | :11:25. | :11:28.
possibly residential accommodation for short periods for assessment of | :11:28. | :11:34.
for respite care. And support for their families. Because they | :11:34. | :11:37.
require it, as well. The row centres like this in Scotland, in | :11:37. | :11:42.
England. -- there are centres like this. By you surprise we have not | :11:42. | :11:47.
got one in Wales? The centres that have been established principle | :11:47. | :11:53.
League -- principally in England have certainly come to Wales. We | :11:53. | :11:57.
have a significant proportion of armed forces recruited in Wales for | :11:57. | :12:00.
will return here we have to look at how we can provide all the support | :12:00. | :12:06.
that they need. But Government has asked you to carry out this revered. | :12:06. | :12:15.
His bare and of political will to see this through? I'm sure this. | :12:15. | :12:24.
is there enough political will? have been looking at the terms | :12:24. | :12:28.
between the armed forces. We have got a spread of these around Wales. | :12:28. | :12:31.
I'm sure they're keen to ensure we provide the best support in | :12:31. | :12:36.
whatever way that is determined. How long will this review take? | :12:36. | :12:42.
have been given a quite a new tight timescale. The group have got until | :12:42. | :12:45.
May so we will be delivering to that time frame. Thank you very | :12:45. | :12:49.
much. Polls have been open all day in | :12:49. | :12:51.
elections to select police commissioners for Wales' four | :12:51. | :12:54.
forces. The commissioners will have the power to appoint chief | :12:54. | :12:57.
constables and set budgets, but they will not dictate day-to-day | :12:57. | :13:02.
operations. In Cardiff South and Penarth, there's also a | :13:02. | :13:07.
parliamentary by-election. And we'll bring you full coverage | :13:07. | :13:17.
:13:17. | :13:20. | ||
of all the results in our Part of the M4 near Swansea was | :13:20. | :13:22.
closed for seven hours earlier after a lorry overturned, spilling | :13:22. | :13:25.
boxes of frozen ready-meals onto the road. The accident happened | :13:25. | :13:27.
near Penllergaer. There were long tailbacks. No-one was seriously | :13:27. | :13:29.
injured. A woman who was taken ill after her | :13:29. | :13:32.
car was deliberately set on fire outside her home in Wrexham has | :13:32. | :13:35.
died in hospital. Dorothy Dudley- Smith was 78. A man's been arrested | :13:35. | :13:42.
and released on bail. You're watching Wales Today. Still | :13:42. | :13:46.
ahead: "It was always in the plan". Rob Howley defends changing half | :13:46. | :13:56.
:13:56. | :13:59. | ||
the team for the Samoa game. Allegations that children in | :13:59. | :14:02.
Ceredigion are being told off for speaking English in school and on | :14:02. | :14:05.
the yard have been removed from an anonymous website. The individuals | :14:05. | :14:08.
behind the site say they've been accused of making things up but | :14:08. | :14:11.
insist all they wanted to do was assess how much concern there is | :14:11. | :14:14.
amongst parents. Our reporter, Cemlyn Davies, is in our | :14:14. | :14:17.
Aberystwyth newsroom this evening. What more do we know about this | :14:17. | :14:27.
site? The website was set up in the middle of October and since then it | :14:27. | :14:30.
has published a number of allegations including claims some | :14:30. | :14:34.
schools are using a traffic light system to punish children were | :14:34. | :14:38.
caught speaking English. The report suggested some children are going | :14:38. | :14:44.
home afraid of speaking English for fear of being told off. These | :14:44. | :14:48.
allegations are completely anonymous. We have no idea who is | :14:48. | :14:52.
behind this website or how many people are involved. We have been | :14:52. | :14:56.
in contact with them but they would not give us their names or an | :14:56. | :15:01.
interview either. Tonight, the allegations have been removed from | :15:01. | :15:05.
the website and a new statement has been published by those involved | :15:05. | :15:09.
and that says the people have been accused of making things up and all | :15:09. | :15:12.
they wanted to do was assess how much concerned it is and draw | :15:13. | :15:16.
attention to the issue. They say tonight they have managed to do | :15:16. | :15:21.
that. The story has appeared in a number of national newspapers over | :15:21. | :15:29.
the last few days. It was in the Daily Mail today. What more has | :15:29. | :15:35.
been said about this website? number of people have taken to | :15:35. | :15:39.
social media sites. Some have contacted the BBC as well asking so | :15:39. | :15:44.
much -- asking why so much attention is being paid to this | :15:44. | :15:49.
anonymous campaign. In the meantime, the Cabinet member with | :15:49. | :15:54.
responsibility for education in Ceredigion has said he would be | :15:54. | :15:58.
happy this -- to discuss any concerns with the person or persons | :15:58. | :16:08.
behind the website. The council also says the council find it very | :16:08. | :16:13.
difficult to believe the accusations have any basis. The | :16:13. | :16:17.
Children's Commissioner has also been made aware of the issue and he | :16:17. | :16:21.
will be listening to interested parties in due course. | :16:21. | :16:24.
Police are investigating a ram-raid at a shop in Cardiff. Thousands of | :16:24. | :16:27.
pounds worth of cigarettes were stolen from a Co-op store in the | :16:27. | :16:31.
Danescourt area of the city in the early hours of this morning. Three | :16:31. | :16:33.
men are believed to have been involved. | :16:33. | :16:36.
A formal complaint has been filed against the accountancy firm Ernst | :16:36. | :16:39.
& Young in connection with the collapse of the Christmas hamper | :16:39. | :16:41.
company, Farepak, six years ago. It left thousands of people across | :16:41. | :16:44.
Wales out of pocket. The disciplinary body for auditors, the | :16:44. | :16:46.
Financial Reporting Council, alleges that the firm failed to | :16:46. | :16:49.
consider Farepak's ability to continue as a going concern. A | :16:49. | :16:59.
:16:59. | :17:00. | ||
tribunal hearing will be held next year. | :17:00. | :17:03.
A supermarket chain has withdrawn its application to build a new | :17:03. | :17:05.
store in Llandeilo. Sainsbury's said continued delays and | :17:05. | :17:08.
uncertainty over approval for the store had made it impossible to | :17:08. | :17:13.
continue. Campaigners opposed to having a supermarket in the town | :17:13. | :17:18.
have welcomed the decision. A third of blind or partially | :17:18. | :17:21.
sighted people in Wales are living in poverty, according to the | :17:21. | :17:25.
charity RNIB Cymru. It says the figure is "shocking", and is | :17:25. | :17:28.
calling for more help for those living below the breadline. Carwyn | :17:28. | :17:37.
Jones reports. Danny Eggar lost his sight when he | :17:37. | :17:41.
was 16. He's now 24 and despite having qualifications and years of | :17:41. | :17:47.
voluntary work under his belt, he's found it difficult to get a job. | :17:47. | :17:55.
He's currently unemployed and says he's struggling to make ends meet. | :17:55. | :18:00.
Their iron people out there my age who have nothing wrong with them -- | :18:00. | :18:05.
they are young people and they don't want to work. I want to work | :18:05. | :18:11.
but I have no choice. I have to pay my rent and gas and electric and | :18:11. | :18:18.
water. Danny is one of a hundred thousand people living in Wales who | :18:18. | :18:21.
are blind or partially sighted and one in three of those is living in | :18:21. | :18:24.
poverty. That's according to a report released today by two | :18:24. | :18:28.
charities - the Bevan Foundation and RNIB Cymru. The report says | :18:28. | :18:32.
it's much harder to get a job if you're blind or partially sighted | :18:32. | :18:34.
and you're more likely to experience discrimination by | :18:34. | :18:44.
:18:44. | :18:46. | ||
employers. Visually impaired people face additional costs in their | :18:46. | :18:48.
daily lives, like specialist equipment and medical expenses. And | :18:48. | :18:51.
while most people with sight loss rely on welfare benefits, there's | :18:51. | :18:53.
confusion as to what those entitlements are and to how to | :18:53. | :18:59.
apply for them. It is very shocking in this day and age that we have so | :18:59. | :19:03.
many people living in poverty. The people I talked to don't have | :19:03. | :19:10.
enough money to heat their house and it is their basic right and | :19:10. | :19:15.
people should be able to have enough money to heat their homes | :19:15. | :19:19.
and be able to eat. The Welsh Government says it's committed to | :19:19. | :19:21.
tackling poverty in all its forms. That's an approach welcomed by | :19:21. | :19:24.
charities who work with visually impaired people in Wales. But they | :19:24. | :19:27.
say much more can be done to support people like Danny, who live | :19:27. | :19:33.
below the poverty line. Rugby and Wales' interim head coach, | :19:33. | :19:36.
Rob Howley, says Sam Warburton is still the squad captain, despite | :19:36. | :19:39.
his exclusion from tomorrow's starting line-up against Samoa. | :19:39. | :19:41.
Ospreys flanker Justin Tipuric takes his place, with Ryan Jones | :19:41. | :19:45.
skippering the side. But Howley says Warburton remains a special | :19:45. | :19:55.
:19:55. | :19:56. | ||
player. More from Ashleigh Crowter. The finals training session of the | :19:56. | :20:00.
week is known as the captains run but which Captain? The Wales | :20:00. | :20:03.
management have played down the decision to leave Sam Warburton out | :20:03. | :20:07.
of the starting team. They say it was always in the plan to give | :20:07. | :20:15.
other players like Justin Tipuric a chance to prove their worth. | :20:15. | :20:20.
commonsense approach is needed. You can never pick the same 15. Over | :20:20. | :20:27.
the ten year of the coaching team, we have made changes -- changes for | :20:27. | :20:32.
this fixture. Sam Warburton has been a special player and is a | :20:32. | :20:39.
special player. Sam Warburton is still captain. With Sam Warburton | :20:39. | :20:44.
on the bench tomorrow, Ryan Jones will lead the national team for a | :20:44. | :20:49.
record-breaking 29th time. Pride does not do it justice. It means | :20:49. | :20:54.
the world to me and my family and friends. It will be a pretty | :20:54. | :21:00.
special day. The news for read Le Lac Alun Wyn Jones is less cheery. | :21:00. | :21:04.
Already ruled out of the autumn internationals, today he learned he | :21:04. | :21:08.
needed surgery on his shoulder and is set to miss the rest of his | :21:08. | :21:11.
reasons Heineken Cup campaign and possibly the start of the Six | :21:11. | :21:16.
Nations. His club partner a Ian Evans sat out training today as a | :21:16. | :21:19.
precaution after a back spasm but he is expected to be fit for | :21:19. | :21:24.
tomorrow. There will be new combinations of the pitch. Dan | :21:24. | :21:28.
Biggar and Mike Phillips at half- back and Ashley Beck will also play | :21:28. | :21:30.
his first international at the Millennium Stadium alongside Jamie | :21:30. | :21:40.
Roberts. He has been passing on his knowledge. He is one of the big | :21:40. | :21:43.
figures in the team and he learned a lot just standing by him and | :21:43. | :21:50.
listening to him. He is a big character and it will be great to | :21:50. | :21:56.
play alongside him. Samoa have beaten Wales at two World Cups and | :21:56. | :22:00.
have only lost by seven points when they met in the Zealand last year. | :22:00. | :22:04.
Both sides think they can win tomorrow. | :22:05. | :22:08.
There's been a further injury set- back for Wales goalkeeper Wayne | :22:08. | :22:11.
Hennessey. The Wolves keeper has had surgery on his injured knee and | :22:11. | :22:13.
won't now play until next season. Hennessey originally suffered a | :22:13. | :22:16.
cruciate ligament injury in April but then ruptured the same knee in | :22:16. | :22:20.
training on Monday. Let's get the weather now with Sue | :22:20. | :22:23.
in the centre of Cardiff, where they've been switching on the | :22:23. | :22:33.
:22:33. | :22:42. | ||
The lights are looking festive. Some welcome brightness after a | :22:42. | :22:45.
grey day for most of us, but not everywhere. Snowdon and Pen y Fan | :22:45. | :22:49.
saw blue skies above the mist. It won't be as foggy tomorrow but it | :22:49. | :22:51.
starts cloudy with some mist patches. It's mainly cloudy this | :22:51. | :22:59.
evening with mist reforming. Not as foggy as last night though. Mostly | :22:59. | :23:02.
dry, although a few spots of drizzle are possible towards dawn | :23:02. | :23:05.
as cloud thickens. Cold enough in rural spots for a slight frost, | :23:05. | :23:07.
particularly through Powys. These are temperatures for towns and | :23:07. | :23:13.
cities, but it'll be colder in the countryside. So first thing | :23:13. | :23:16.
tomorrow, a slight frost inland. Some early brightness along the | :23:16. | :23:19.
North coast with patchy mist and fog but it'll turn cloudier with | :23:19. | :23:25.
outbreaks of rain and drizzle developing from the west. More | :23:25. | :23:31.
persistent by late afternoon. Freshening winds too with | :23:31. | :23:35.
temperatures suppressed by the cloud and rain. Just 7C in Wrexham | :23:35. | :23:41.
and Flintshire. Just about getting into double figures along the south | :23:41. | :23:48.
coast. So it's dull and it could turn wet through the evening if | :23:48. | :23:51.
you're heading to the rugby in Cardiff, Wales against Samoa, at | :23:51. | :24:01.

It's Pudsey's big day tomorrow. Before Children In Need starts, | :24:13. | :24:16.
we're looking at some of the projects in Wales that benefit from | :24:16. | :24:19.
your donations. Louise Elliott has been to see one charity working | :24:19. | :24:22.
with young carers. I think all of us should agree that childhood | :24:22. | :24:26.
should be a special time. But I want to tell you about some | :24:26. | :24:29.
children who live in Wales who don't have what most of us would | :24:29. | :24:34.
call a normal childhood. This is Wrexham and the children here are | :24:34. | :24:37.
taking part in a group organised by Barnardo's and funded by Children | :24:37. | :24:44.
In Need. The children are all young carers and today, they are dressed | :24:44. | :24:50.
up as soon be Euros. That is just what they are. He rose caring for | :24:50. | :24:59.
others. It might involve caring for parents with a disability or | :24:59. | :25:02.
illness but some of these children care for parents who cannot have | :25:02. | :25:07.
after themselves through substance misuse of alcohol abuse. So this | :25:07. | :25:12.
group is fun but it is also doing a vital job in lots of other ways and | :25:12. | :25:17.
if things do get more difficult at home, they can receive the help | :25:17. | :25:23.
they and their families desperately need. Your donations really help | :25:23. | :25:27.
because they keep activities like the one in Wrexham going and the | :25:27. | :25:30.
children can forget about caring for two hours a week and hopefully | :25:30. | :25:35.
get back some of their childhood. Louise Elliott reporting there on | :25:35. | :25:38.
the work of Barnardos Flintshire Young Carers project. Children In | :25:38. | :25:41.
Need is tomorrow night on BBC One Wales, starting at 7:00pm. There's | :25:41. | :25:51.
:25:51. | :25:53. | ||
a lot more information on the website, bbc.co.uk/pudsey. | :25:53. | :25:57.
The main news again from the BBC: The former Radio One DJ, Dave Lee | :25:57. | :26:00.
Travis, has been arrested at his home in Buckinghamshire on | :26:00. | :26:02.
suspicion of committing sexual offences. The 67-year-old is being | :26:02. | :26:05.
held by detectives from a Scotland Yard unit, set up in the wake of | :26:05. | :26:15.
:26:15. | :26:17. | ||
the Jimmy Savile scandal. Lord McAlpine, the former | :26:17. | :26:19.
Conservative treasurer wrongly accused of child abuse, has told of | :26:19. | :26:22.
his shock and hurt over the false allegations which emerged following | :26:22. | :26:24.
a report on BBC's Newsnight programme. His lawyer says he | :26:24. | :26:34.
:26:34. | :26:36. | ||
expects a compensation deal with the BBC to be reached. | :26:36. | :26:38.
Here in Wales, the body representing large retailers is | :26:38. | :26:41.
warning consumer confidence is at a six-month low and it's fearing the | :26:41. | :26:46.
worst just weeks before Christmas. A report says Wales should consider | :26:46. | :26:48.
establishing a permanent residential centre for military | :26:48. | :26:50.
veterans. The Health Inspectorate received 250 submissions from | :26:50. | :26:52.
members of the armed forces and believed the move could improve | :26:52. | :27:01.
care for veterans after they return to civilian life. Consumer | :27:01. | :27:05.
confidence is at an all-time low. People are facing a squeeze on | :27:05. | :27:09.
their disposable income. New figures suggest we are spending | :27:09. | :27:18.
less. If you have a story you think we should cover, get in touch. The | :27:18. | :27:28.
