Welcome to Wales Today. Tonight's headlines: I don't know whether to | :00:00. | :00:10.
laugh or cry! A-level results - a fall in the | :00:10. | :00:13.
number of pupils getting the top grades, lagging further behind | :00:13. | :00:16.
England. The education minister says it's a | :00:16. | :00:21.
cause for concern. Those high-achieving students, the | :00:21. | :00:22.
cause for concern. question in my mind is whether we | :00:23. | :00:24.
are stretching them enough. A police officer who sexually | :00:24. | :00:42.
assaulted two women while on duty is jailed for three years. | :00:42. | :00:47.
Why Wales is handing out more prescriptions than any other country | :00:47. | :00:52.
in the UK. The Premier League season starts on | :00:52. | :00:56.
Saturday. This is how the game is being marketed in America. Why | :00:56. | :00:59.
Cardiff and Swansea are already reaping the financial rewards? | :00:59. | :01:05.
Orange shoes, who's that? Gareth Bale. Bale, where's he from? | :01:05. | :01:12.
England? Wales. Is that another country? Yes and no.How many | :01:12. | :01:18.
countries are in this country? Four. The Commonwealth baton relay was | :01:19. | :01:21.
first introduced in Cardiff - now more than 60 years on that very | :01:21. | :01:23.
first baton has been found. Good evening. A cause for concern. | :01:23. | :01:33.
That's how the Education Minister, Huw Lewis, has described the fall in | :01:33. | :01:37.
the number of Welsh pupils who got the highest grades at A-level this | :01:37. | :01:41.
year - for the fourth year in a row. This means students in Wales are now | :01:41. | :01:44.
further behind those in England and Northern Ireland. Last year 23.6% | :01:44. | :01:50.
got A star or A grades. This year that figure fell to 22.9%. The | :01:50. | :01:57.
number of pupils who got A star to E grades has stayed the same at 97.6%. | :01:57. | :02:01.
Here's our education correspondent, Arwyn Jones. | :02:01. | :02:09.
As always, many were celebrating their success this morning. After 13 | :02:09. | :02:15.
years in school, the result was worth the wait. | :02:15. | :02:21.
What are you going on to do? Medicine. | :02:21. | :02:31.
How, what will you be doing now? Either go to college next year. | :02:31. | :02:36.
It has been interesting, seeing the peoples come in to get their slips. | :02:36. | :02:42.
Some of them were ecstatic but others less so. That reflects the | :02:42. | :02:46.
overall picture in Wales. The overall pupils getting the very top | :02:46. | :02:52.
grades has gone down and that isn't new. It is the pattern we have seen | :02:52. | :02:57.
in the last four years. The gap between us and the rest is | :02:57. | :03:02.
continuing to grow. 26.3% of pupils across Wales, England and Northern | :03:02. | :03:09.
Ireland but at least one a grade. In Wales it was 22 point 9%. Our you | :03:09. | :03:16.
concerned when we see the highest grades? We are falling behind. | :03:16. | :03:27.
It is a cause for concern. Overall, we can see a small cup of around | :03:27. | :03:33.
half a percentage point in terms of overall achievement. There is an | :03:33. | :03:38.
issue over those higher grades. Those high achieving students, the | :03:38. | :03:41.
question in my mind is whether we are stretching them enough. | :03:41. | :03:51.
The Conservatives in Wales says the persistent widening with other parts | :03:51. | :03:55.
of the UK needs to be addressed so what is going wrong? The results for | :03:55. | :03:59.
girls were steady but boys didn't do so well. | :03:59. | :04:06.
Most of the fall at grade a seems to be in the boys results. That is | :04:06. | :04:10.
disappointing because it has been in place for a few years and it is | :04:10. | :04:18.
present in AES results. We need to follow through in terms of support | :04:18. | :04:21.
and guidance in the education system in Wales, in the way the boys | :04:21. | :04:28.
approach causes. George and Chris are the DJs at | :04:28. | :04:34.
Newport's city radio. Today we were with them in Newport. Chris didn't | :04:34. | :04:39.
get the grades he wanted but George was very pleased with his results. | :04:39. | :04:45.
Hours of revision and then it culminates in this one moment when | :04:45. | :04:49.
you open the envelope and all they are is letters on a page but they | :04:49. | :04:54.
mean a lot. Luckily, I checked I had got into university before I got the | :04:54. | :04:57.
results so the results were secondary but it is nice to get the | :04:57. | :05:01.
confirmation. Yesterday we caught up with Sam | :05:01. | :05:06.
during her drills as an army cadet in Wrexham. This morning, we were | :05:06. | :05:14.
with her influential. She got to grade the and she passed the Welsh | :05:14. | :05:22.
baccalaureate. Over 8500 pupils were awarded the advanced diploma at it | :05:22. | :05:29.
is rolled out across Wales. It is useful because it is there as | :05:29. | :05:32.
a back-up to help you get in and it is helpful because it is like | :05:32. | :05:35.
another A-level qualification and it wasn't that time-consuming. | :05:35. | :05:41.
Today will be a chance to congratulate all the success of | :05:41. | :05:44.
Welsh pupils and the ongoing task of trying to get more pupils getting | :05:44. | :05:48.
the top grades goes on. A day of celebration for some | :05:48. | :05:52.
students - for others who didn't get their grades it's been a slightly | :05:52. | :05:55.
different story. Arwyn is at the University of South Wales in | :05:55. | :06:01.
Pontypridd now. Arwyn. Thank you. For the majority of | :06:01. | :06:06.
students, as you say, they have got the university places they want but | :06:06. | :06:11.
not everybody was so fortunate today and that is why we are here at the | :06:11. | :06:15.
clearing department. The phones have been bringing all day. People have | :06:15. | :06:21.
been seeing if there are any spaces available and the advice is clear, | :06:21. | :06:25.
there is bound to be a cause for you. Perhaps take a year out and | :06:25. | :06:32.
come back having done a little bit more work. Let's discuss these | :06:32. | :06:36.
issues with the beauty Vice Chancellor at the University of | :06:36. | :06:40.
South Wales. You were only formed last year as a university. 33,000 | :06:40. | :06:47.
students. How is clearing going? It has been busy. We are pleased. | :06:47. | :06:53.
The firms have been ringing all day. We have a number of courses that are | :06:53. | :06:58.
full and a number of courses that are close to being full. | :06:58. | :07:02.
Which courses are filling up first of all? | :07:02. | :07:08.
Courses like nursing and midwifery are full. Our courses in Cardiff in | :07:08. | :07:15.
the cultural and creative industries, including teaching, are | :07:15. | :07:19.
very nearly full although we do still have some places for | :07:19. | :07:25.
well-qualified applications. We have other courses and one of the | :07:25. | :07:28.
advantages of being a newly merged University is we have a wider range. | :07:28. | :07:37.
We have courses at different levels that offer different routes to a | :07:37. | :07:41.
degree. Our advice is don't panic. Give us a call and we will try and | :07:41. | :07:47.
help you. If we can't, we will point you in the right direction. | :07:47. | :07:51.
There is a phone going off behind me. They are open tomorrow. Plenty | :07:51. | :07:58.
of room to celebrate for pupils in Wales Today but plenty of room for | :07:58. | :08:03.
improvement in terms of the Wales wide picture of a level results. | :08:03. | :08:12.
A South Wales Police detective who sexually assaulted two women while | :08:12. | :08:15.
on duty has been sentenced to three years for each offence. Jeffrey | :08:15. | :08:18.
Davies was a family liason officer when he carried out the assaults in | :08:18. | :08:21.
2010. Two senior officers are now facing a misconduct hearing over the | :08:21. | :08:25.
way they dealt with the allegations. Caroline Evans reports. | :08:25. | :08:27.
Arriving at court today, Jeffrey Davies already knew he would be | :08:27. | :08:30.
given a prison sentence. The 42-year-old was convicted two weeks | :08:30. | :08:33.
ago for the two sexual assaults which took place in Merthyr Tydfil | :08:33. | :08:37.
three years ago. As family liaison officer he was supposed to support | :08:37. | :08:41.
victims of crime, but when one women came here to complain about domestic | :08:41. | :08:44.
violence he took advantage of the situation. The assault took place as | :08:44. | :08:50.
she left the interview room inside the station. The second assault | :08:51. | :08:55.
happened after he drove another victim of crime to an isolated lane | :08:55. | :08:59.
near her home. One of the women is said to be so traumatised by her | :08:59. | :09:03.
experience she now panics every time she sees a policeman. Now following | :09:03. | :09:08.
his conviction two senior detectives from the force are also being | :09:08. | :09:11.
investigated. Detective Inspector Phillip Camm and Detective Sergeant | :09:11. | :09:14.
Richard Jones who oversaw him at work are to face misconduct hearings | :09:14. | :09:18.
for the way they dealt with the allegations. The Independent Police | :09:18. | :09:23.
Complaints Commission has told us that if the allegations against them | :09:23. | :09:30.
up upheld they could be sacked. At his trial, Davies pleaded not guilty | :09:30. | :09:33.
to both assaults but two weeks ago a jury found him guilty. The judge | :09:33. | :09:39.
said that plea meant he had forced the women to relive what had happen | :09:39. | :09:44.
to them. Sentencing him the judge said he recognised prison would be | :09:44. | :09:47.
difficult for a former police officer but Davies was guilty of a | :09:47. | :09:51.
gross breach of trust and he had a duty to redress public confidence in | :09:51. | :09:57.
the integrity of the legal system. Davies was given three years for | :09:57. | :10:00.
each offence the sentences to run concurrently. It means in practice | :10:00. | :10:03.
he will serve 18 months behind bars and he will be put on the sex | :10:03. | :10:07.
offenders register where his name will remain indefinitely. | :10:07. | :10:12.
An investigation has been launched following concerns about nursing | :10:12. | :10:18.
care at a hospital in Flintshire. No staff at Deeside Community Hospital | :10:18. | :10:20.
have been suspended but Betsi Cadwaladr Health Board says a small | :10:20. | :10:23.
number are not currently involved with patient care. | :10:23. | :10:30.
The funeral of Corporal James Dunsby who died two weeks after collapsing | :10:30. | :10:33.
during SAS selection training in the Brecon Beacons has taken place. The | :10:33. | :10:37.
service for the 31-year-old was held in Trowbridge in Wiltshire. Two | :10:37. | :10:41.
others reservists, Trooper Edward Maher and Lance Corporal Craig | :10:41. | :10:44.
Roberts, died on the day of the exercise. | :10:44. | :10:52.
A disciplinary panel has heard allegations a nurse at Ty Hafan | :10:52. | :10:55.
Children's Hospice posted a photo of a person sitting on a bedpan on | :10:55. | :11:00.
Facebook. Allison Hopton is also accused of making a series of | :11:00. | :11:02.
inappropriate postings on the website containing swear words. The | :11:02. | :11:06.
Nursing and Midwifery Council hearing in Cardiff was read a | :11:06. | :11:09.
letter, in which she expressed remorse for her actions. | :11:09. | :11:15.
A judge at Mold crown court has reduced the sentence of a | :11:15. | :11:18.
15-year-old boy who barricaded a teacher in a classroom and laughed | :11:18. | :11:22.
as he carried out a sex attack on her. The boy had his four year | :11:22. | :11:26.
sentence in youth custody cut by 12 months. The original hearing was | :11:26. | :11:30.
told colleagues tried to break down the door to help the teacher. | :11:30. | :11:36.
It is football's richest league, its clubs sharing the billions of pounds | :11:36. | :11:42.
flowing in from all over the world. Cardiff City have joined Swansea | :11:42. | :11:45.
City in the Premier League and both have been spending heavily on new | :11:45. | :11:48.
players ahead of Saturday's big kick off. But this is as much about | :11:48. | :11:54.
business as it is about sport, as Sachin Krishnan explains. | :11:54. | :12:04.
Manchester United, champions. Football these days is a global | :12:04. | :12:09.
business and the coming season, Premier League clubs including | :12:09. | :12:12.
Swansea and Cardiff can look forward to a windfall. A new deal with sky | :12:12. | :12:19.
and BT is kicking in, worth around £3 billion over the next three | :12:19. | :12:24.
seasons. It means each curve can expect a minimum of 60 million each | :12:24. | :12:28.
year. The amount of money the bottom club | :12:28. | :12:33.
gets at the end of the season is equivalent to what Manchester United | :12:33. | :12:37.
got when they won it last season. A cautionary tale is provided by | :12:37. | :12:43.
Portsmouth. Five years ago, as an established Premier League side, | :12:43. | :12:47.
they beat Cardiff. Now, after financial mismanagement, they are | :12:47. | :12:51.
mixing with Newport County in the fourth tier. | :12:52. | :12:57.
Struggling in the Premier League is better than being mid-table in the | :12:57. | :13:01.
championship and there will be tough decisions. As long as they are | :13:01. | :13:06.
careful with the money. In Swansea, the success of the club | :13:07. | :13:10.
is benefiting businesses across the city, with one study estimating the | :13:11. | :13:15.
Swans first season in the Premier League was worth £58 million to the | :13:15. | :13:18.
local economy. At Swansea University, they have linked with | :13:18. | :13:22.
the club to develop new training facilities and a significant rise in | :13:22. | :13:27.
foreign applications has been put down, in part, to the Swans. | :13:27. | :13:32.
I was out recently at a conference in sweets and -- in Sweden. I met | :13:33. | :13:41.
someone from Mozambique who knew Swansea city. He was talking about | :13:41. | :13:48.
the premiership. It has not only put Swansea region on the map, it has | :13:48. | :13:53.
put the university on the map. Where is Gareth Bale from? | :13:54. | :13:57.
Wales. Is that another country? How many | :13:57. | :14:00.
countries are in the east country? Clubs frequently spend much of the | :14:00. | :14:12.
PCs and in Asia and one expert in branding told me that the profile of | :14:12. | :14:18.
Cardiff city is beginning to rise, following the switch to read. | :14:18. | :14:24.
I think so far, Cardiff city are smart in terms of focusing on the | :14:24. | :14:31.
grassroots relationships with the Academy. | :14:31. | :14:36.
48 hours to go until the big kick-off, it is a season that | :14:36. | :14:40.
promises much excitement on the pitch, as well as plenty of | :14:40. | :14:43.
opportunities and benefits of it. A little later, a closer look at | :14:43. | :14:47.
Swansea City's prospects on the pitch. Also still to come - Engraved | :14:47. | :14:50.
with daffodils, leeks and a dragon - the mystery of the first | :14:51. | :14:56.
Commonwealth Games baton is solved. And he fights on Saturday night! WBO | :14:56. | :15:00.
light heavyweight world champion Nathan Cleverly is here. I'll be | :15:00. | :15:02.
talking to him in a few minutes. GPs in Wales prescribe more medicine | :15:03. | :15:14.
than any other country in the UK - more than 24 items per person per | :15:14. | :15:19.
year. In England, it's fewer than 19. New figures show the number of | :15:19. | :15:23.
prescriptions has risen by more than half in ten years and as Daniel | :15:23. | :15:27.
Davies reports, it's reignited the political row about whether we can | :15:27. | :15:28.
really afford to do it for free. We get through more than half £1 | :15:28. | :15:40.
billion worth of descriptions every year. The cost of the NHS has fallen | :15:40. | :15:44.
but the number of ascription is this going up. Ten years ago, GPs here | :15:44. | :15:50.
wrote about 48 million prescriptions. Last year it was more | :15:50. | :15:56.
than 74 million. A steady rise. Free prescriptions were introduced in | :15:56. | :16:00.
2007 and there was no obvious leap after that. If it isn't free | :16:00. | :16:04.
prescriptions that are pushing up the figures, why do they continue to | :16:04. | :16:08.
climb? Every year we see about a 5% | :16:08. | :16:12.
increase in the number issued and we think that is mainly the | :16:12. | :16:16.
consequences of an ageing population with chronic diseases that come with | :16:16. | :16:19.
age and also increasing evidence about which drugs can provide | :16:19. | :16:22.
benefit. This pharmacist in Carmarthen | :16:22. | :16:27.
worries about the wasted medicines that are prescribed but never taken. | :16:27. | :16:32.
There are not of initiatives to try and reduce that. They are to do with | :16:32. | :16:42.
prescribing intervals and reminding people to order what they need. | :16:42. | :16:45.
For years, Wales has been prescribing more medicine than other | :16:46. | :16:49.
parts of the UK but the Welsh Conservatives say those who can | :16:49. | :16:52.
afford to pay should do so. Ultimately, the reproductions policy | :16:52. | :16:57.
is not doing what it was meant to do and there is greater dependency on | :16:57. | :17:02.
prescriptions. There is not the decline in ill health that we would | :17:02. | :17:08.
like to see. The Welsh government is spending over £550 million per year | :17:08. | :17:12.
on prescriptions in Wales. Some will ask whether it is the best | :17:12. | :17:18.
use of scarce resources, whatever the cost, you can be assured we | :17:18. | :17:21.
haven't heard the last of that debate. Doctors, dentists and other | :17:21. | :17:24.
health workers who are HIV positive will be able to give full medical | :17:24. | :17:28.
care in Wales and England from next year. | :17:28. | :17:30.
It's part of plans to update rules drawn up in the 1980s, when the | :17:30. | :17:34.
risks were less well understood. Advances in HIV treatment mean | :17:34. | :17:37.
people are now more likely to be struck by lightning than infected by | :17:37. | :17:42.
a doctor. More than £5 million will be spent | :17:42. | :17:45.
on improving Tywyn Hospital in Gwynedd. The Health Minister says | :17:45. | :17:48.
part of the site will be demolished to make way for a new extension. | :17:48. | :17:52.
There are plans for a new 16-bed ward and a primary care centre. The | :17:52. | :17:55.
local community health council hopes the health board will now rethink | :17:56. | :17:58.
plans to reduce accident and emergency opening hours in the Tywyn | :17:59. | :18:02.
area. More on the Premier League build up | :18:02. | :18:06.
now, here's Claire. As we've heard, just two days to go | :18:06. | :18:10.
until the start of the Premier League season. Tomorrow night we'll | :18:10. | :18:13.
be looking at Cardiff City but tonight it's the turn of Swansea | :18:13. | :18:16.
City, who are looking forward to a third season in the top flight. The | :18:16. | :18:20.
Swans host the Champions, Manchester United and after exceeding all | :18:20. | :18:22.
expectations last year, hopes are high at the Liberty. Cemlyn Davies | :18:22. | :18:26.
reports. Last season was an historic one for | :18:26. | :18:28.
Swansea city, with the club winning Last season was an historic one for | :18:28. | :18:31.
its first major Tracey and finishing ninth in the Premier League. Already | :18:31. | :18:36.
this turn, the Swans have beaten a Swedish side. It is little wonder | :18:37. | :18:43.
funds expectations are high for the new campaign. But the manager isn't | :18:43. | :18:49.
getting carried away. By target, overall, would be in the | :18:49. | :18:52.
Premier League to try to consolidate By target, overall, would be in the | :18:52. | :18:58.
this team as a maid team. -- in middle team. If we could do that, it | :18:58. | :19:01.
would be fantastic. The closed season hasn't been | :19:01. | :19:06.
straightforward for Swansea, who missed out on several answer | :19:06. | :19:11.
targets. A falling out between the club and an agent also fuelled | :19:11. | :19:15.
speculation about the manager's future but he is still at the helm | :19:15. | :19:20.
and has managed to add a few faces to the squad. They include a record | :19:20. | :19:26.
signing. Fans will hope he can have the same impact as his new striking | :19:26. | :19:32.
partner had last season. Another player has joined from Liverpool to | :19:32. | :19:37.
bolster the field and they have held onto the midfielder for another year | :19:37. | :19:44.
at least. Nathan Dyer has signed a new four-year contract and no key | :19:44. | :19:48.
players have left the club. We hear these tales about how | :19:49. | :19:54.
Arsenal would like to sign some of the players but no sign of a | :19:54. | :19:57.
concrete bid and the end of the transfer window is approaching. | :19:57. | :20:03.
There is of a first Premier League transfer window is approaching. | :20:03. | :20:09.
Welsh derby to look forward to. That is in Cardiff on the 3rd of | :20:09. | :20:13.
November. Swansea kick off their league campaign against Manchester | :20:13. | :20:19.
United and new management. There is a change of manager but I | :20:19. | :20:25.
don't think they have changed many players. It will be a tough game. | :20:25. | :20:30.
International is all over the park. It will be very tough and we | :20:30. | :20:33.
couldn't have asked for a much tougher game. | :20:33. | :20:37.
After exceeding expectations last year, the pressure is now on Swansea | :20:37. | :20:40.
city to take another step forward and what that it way to show they | :20:40. | :20:46.
are up to the task than beating the champions here on Saturday evening? | :20:46. | :20:52.
He's 26 fights unbeaten and this Saturday will defend his WBO light | :20:52. | :20:54.
heavyweight world title against Russian Sergey Kovalev in front of | :20:54. | :20:58.
home fans in Cardiff. Nathan Cleverly has taken a break from his | :20:58. | :21:01.
rigorous training schedule to join us. How are you? How our | :21:01. | :21:08.
preparations? I feel great and excited. Fantastic. | :21:08. | :21:13.
I'm mentally focused and feeling in great shape, ready for Saturday. | :21:13. | :21:19.
Let's talk about your opponent. Boxing fans will know him. He is a | :21:19. | :21:24.
tough competitor. Many say he is the favourite. How do you deal with | :21:24. | :21:27.
that? He hits exceptionally hard. 18 | :21:27. | :21:33.
knockouts in three rounds. He wants to knock you out. He is the | :21:33. | :21:37.
favourite going in to the fight but I like that. That is taking the | :21:37. | :21:43.
pressure off me so I can go in and wind the fight. | :21:43. | :21:45.
Is that how you deal with that? Knowing him so well, how he will | :21:45. | :21:49.
deal with it, makes it better for you? | :21:49. | :21:52.
Knowing it is tough and how dangerous he is has kept me focused | :21:52. | :21:58.
and I have worked hard in training. As I said, preparation has gone real | :21:58. | :22:02.
good. What is the next step then? Is | :22:02. | :22:06.
Bernard Hopkins still someone you want to fight? | :22:06. | :22:09.
Icy this fight as a stepping stone to those big names like Bernard | :22:09. | :22:18.
Hopkins. This is the fight to do it. This man is capable and dangerous | :22:18. | :22:22.
but we will get through this and we can look for the Bernard Hopkins | :22:22. | :22:24.
fight. The way in is tomorrow. Are you | :22:24. | :22:30.
starting? Don't worry. I am looking forward to | :22:30. | :22:35.
the way in. I'm hungry and I will get that out the way tomorrow. It is | :22:35. | :22:41.
outside the Capitol shopping Centre in Cardiff. Then I will get some | :22:41. | :22:45.
carbohydrates in me. What do you fancy? | :22:45. | :22:50.
A bowl of spaghetti Bolognese. The best of luck. That's all for | :22:50. | :22:55.
tonight. I know Nathan is a Cardiff City fan, tomorrow night we'll be | :22:55. | :22:58.
looking at their hopes for life in the Premier League. Lucy, back to | :22:58. | :23:04.
you. Also tomorrow, The baton that will | :23:04. | :23:08.
travel to all 71 commonwealth countries ahead of next year's games | :23:08. | :23:11.
in Glasgow, will be unveiled tomorrow night. The baton relay has | :23:11. | :23:15.
become a regular feature of the games - ever since organisers first | :23:15. | :23:19.
suggested it here in Wales, in 1958. But, as Jenny Rees explains, the | :23:19. | :23:22.
whereabouts of that very first baton were a mystery, until recently. | :23:22. | :23:30.
A relay around the country to kick-off a sporting event. It is | :23:30. | :23:35.
something we are familiar with after the Olympic Games in London and soon | :23:35. | :23:38.
to be unveiled is the Commonwealth Games bat on for 2014. The first | :23:38. | :23:45.
relay for the Commonwealth Games started at Buckingham Palace in 1958 | :23:45. | :23:50.
and made its way to the opening ceremony of the six games in | :23:50. | :23:56.
Cardiff. It was at the Arms Park. And this was the original bat on. | :23:57. | :24:01.
Engraved with daffodils, leeks and a dragon. It travelled around what was | :24:01. | :24:09.
then 13 canteens of Wales before can Jones took the final leg of the | :24:09. | :24:13.
relay, and in the bat on to rinse Philip. It has been held at the | :24:13. | :24:18.
National Museum of Wales since but staff admits they didn't know it was | :24:18. | :24:26.
year. The sporting significance was | :24:26. | :24:29.
unbeknownst to us because it was only recently we had in enquiry from | :24:29. | :24:35.
the organising committee in London, asking if we knew about its | :24:35. | :24:38.
whereabouts. It had been safely stored here since the late 50s. | :24:38. | :24:43.
It was stored with a letter from the Queen, which would have been rolled | :24:43. | :24:49.
up inside the bat on. The organising committee thought of | :24:49. | :24:54.
the idea. Judging by the correspondence, there is a letter in | :24:54. | :24:57.
the final saying that the committee had thought up the idea of a relay | :24:57. | :25:03.
and the Queen had supported it. Following the event, the Queen | :25:03. | :25:06.
wanted it to come to the National Museum. | :25:06. | :25:10.
Staff are now hoping to find a permanent home for the bat on to go | :25:10. | :25:15.
on display. In the meantime, the 2014 bat on will be in Wales for a | :25:15. | :25:19.
week next year. Now it is time for the weather. | :25:19. | :25:25.
You will need your umbrella tonight and on Saturday but sunshine in | :25:25. | :25:31.
between. A yellow warning is in place for parts of Gwynedd and | :25:32. | :25:37.
Conway. We are expecting up to three inches of rain in 12 hours. | :25:37. | :25:43.
Localised flooding is possible. This is the extent of the showers. Here | :25:43. | :25:48.
is the rain making its way in from the west and currently, it is | :25:48. | :25:52.
sitting across parts of her books are right up to Anglesey and Gwynedd | :25:52. | :25:54.
and parts of the north-west but it are right up to Anglesey and Gwynedd | :25:54. | :26:02.
will ease as we go into the overnight period. The cloud will | :26:02. | :26:06.
help to hold those temperatures. We will get a brief wake tomorrow when | :26:06. | :26:12.
that clears but there is another one waiting in the wings, bringing the | :26:12. | :26:16.
rain on Saturday. First thing tomorrow morning, a bright start | :26:16. | :26:20.
with bits of rain across the south-east but we are in for a | :26:20. | :26:25.
decent day. It will feel warm in the sunshine with highs of 17 - 22 | :26:25. | :26:30.
Celsius with lighter winds compared to tonight. Tomorrow evening we | :26:30. | :26:35.
start to see thickening cloud ahead of that front and with that starts | :26:35. | :26:40.
to come a bit of light drizzle in the overnight period into the early | :26:40. | :26:43.
hours of Saturday with temperatures remaining in double figures. | :26:43. | :26:47.
Saturday will start to feel more like autumn when we see strong to | :26:47. | :26:52.
gale force winds in coastal areas and rain accompanying that. The good | :26:52. | :26:59.
news is that will clear on Sunday. A bright and breezy day on Sunday and | :26:59. | :27:03.
early indications of high pressure building next week and things will | :27:03. | :27:06.
settle down. The main news again, the education | :27:06. | :27:12.
minister has told BBC Wales he is concerned by the number of Welsh | :27:12. | :27:16.
pupils who got the highest grades at A-level, which has fallen further | :27:16. | :27:21.
away from pupils in England and Ireland. | :27:21. | :27:25.
It is a cause of concern for me. We can see a gap of half of a | :27:25. | :27:30.
percentage point in terms of overall achievement but I will be looking at | :27:30. | :27:34.
those higher grades with officials. That is Wales Today. We will have an | :27:34. | :27:37.
update for you at 8pm and again at That is Wales Today. We will have an | :27:37. | :27:45.
ten 5pm. Thanks for watching and in joy your evening. Goodbye. | :27:45. | :27:45. |
