Here, on BBC One, it's time for the news where you are. | :00:00. | :00:00.
Thousands of steelworkers at Tata vote to accept less generous | :00:00. | :00:09.
pensions in a bid to secure the future of the industry. | :00:10. | :00:11.
And, they say we'll all be driving electric cars soon - | :00:12. | :00:14.
so why are there so few places to recharge them? | :00:15. | :00:36.
They've voted for less money in future to save their jobs. | :00:37. | :00:40.
Tata steelworkers, including 6,000 in Wales, | :00:41. | :00:41.
have overwhelmingly backed a deal that will end the company's final | :00:42. | :00:44.
The company's offer included a ?1 billion investment | :00:45. | :00:49.
commitment at Port Talbot and no compulsory job losses. | :00:50. | :00:52.
Here's our Business Correspondent Brian Meechan. | :00:53. | :00:59.
28-year-old Scott's been working at Port Talbot for ten years. | :01:00. | :01:02.
He followed his dad into the Tata plant. | :01:03. | :01:04.
Scott and his workmates have had a tough decision to make. | :01:05. | :01:08.
Obviously pension is not at the front of our minds | :01:09. | :01:11.
as the older workforce but obviously it gives us hope for the future, | :01:12. | :01:15.
that's what we need, we need to save the steel industry | :01:16. | :01:18.
for our future and the future of the next generation coming through. | :01:19. | :01:21.
Workers are being offered a pension that will give them | :01:22. | :01:23.
a lot less in retirement than their current one. | :01:24. | :01:26.
The company will pay 10% into the pension pot | :01:27. | :01:28.
Tata says it's essential to secure the long-term future of Port Talbot | :01:29. | :01:33.
The pension deal is also tied to a 10-year ?1 billion investment | :01:34. | :01:41.
plan to support steel-making at the site. | :01:42. | :01:45.
A minimum five-year commitment to keeping two blast furnaces | :01:46. | :01:49.
And a commitment to seek to avoid compulsory | :01:50. | :01:52.
I think although the employees at Port Talbot and elsewhere have | :01:53. | :01:59.
They didn't really have any choice in the matter. | :02:00. | :02:03.
The traditional company pensions scheme is dead | :02:04. | :02:05.
Companies are closing the pension schemes left, right and centre. | :02:06. | :02:12.
We had Tesco, which was a very big one, about a year ago, | :02:13. | :02:15.
When the pensions deal was announced in December, | :02:16. | :02:20.
the workforce seemed split and there was a significant chance | :02:21. | :02:23.
But in the end members of the Community Union voted 72% | :02:24. | :02:26.
Unite reported 75% vote in favour on a 69% turnout. | :02:27. | :02:34.
While GMB says it members voted yes by 74% in a 51% turnout. | :02:35. | :02:41.
Local union leaders who also worked at Talbot initially said they'd let | :02:42. | :02:44.
But last month they urged them to back the deal, | :02:45. | :02:50.
arguing the alternative was almost unthinkable. | :02:51. | :02:53.
I don't think anybody had any great pleasure in putting the X in the yes | :02:54. | :02:57.
box and I think people have thought about future and, you know, | :02:58. | :03:02.
it is the ultimate sacrifice, you know, absolutely immense to do | :03:03. | :03:07.
Do you think that Tata can rebuilt trust and how does | :03:08. | :03:13.
Everybody I think now has got to a stage where we are tired, | :03:14. | :03:19.
frustrated, and we need to rebuild confidence in ourselves, | :03:20. | :03:23.
in the company and put us back where we need to be. | :03:24. | :03:27.
The future of Port Talbot and the rest of Tata's steel | :03:28. | :03:32.
operations may be a little clearer tonight, but there are many more | :03:33. | :03:37.
decisions to be made about what that future looks like. | :03:38. | :03:42.
A 23-year-old man from South Wales will appear before | :03:43. | :03:44.
Westminster Magistrates tomorrow charged with possessing information | :03:45. | :03:47.
likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing | :03:48. | :03:51.
Nathan Saunders, from Tredegar, was arrested earlier this month. | :03:52. | :03:57.
Police investigating an armed robbery at a shop in Usk have | :03:58. | :04:00.
The incident happened at the One Stop Shop on Sunday morning. | :04:01. | :04:05.
A 36-year-old from Blaina and a 42-year-old from Little Mill | :04:06. | :04:10.
A 15-year-old boy from Little Mill is in police custody. | :04:11. | :04:17.
Severn Trent has completed its takeover | :04:18. | :04:19.
Shareholders were against the deal because of fears over job | :04:20. | :04:25.
But they dropped an appeal opposing it on Sunday. | :04:26. | :04:31.
Wales urgently needs a network of rapid charging | :04:32. | :04:34.
That's the call from campaigners who say a lack of infrastructure | :04:35. | :04:39.
in rural Wales is holding back the growth of low carbon vehicles. | :04:40. | :04:43.
More from our Environment Correspondent, Steffan Messenger. | :04:44. | :04:49.
Making the switch from a diesel van to an electric model | :04:50. | :04:53.
was all about cutting fuel costs and helping the environment | :04:54. | :04:56.
Based in Newtown in Powys, he delivers plumbing | :04:57. | :05:01.
He's installed his own charger, which tops up the van | :05:02. | :05:14.
But far from helping his business, he's found that a lack of points | :05:15. | :05:21.
to plug into whilst he's out and about means this new vehicle | :05:22. | :05:23.
On a fully charged battery, you're basically, you get about 70 miles. | :05:24. | :05:27.
I mean, people talk about this thing, range anxiety, | :05:28. | :05:30.
Currently to operate an electric vehicle in mid Wales is quite | :05:31. | :05:37.
Currently, so-called rapid charging points that can top up an electric | :05:38. | :05:45.
car in around 20 to 30 minutes are only available in four | :05:46. | :05:49.
locations along the A55, and eight stops along the M4. | :05:50. | :05:53.
Without some serious forward planning, the rest of Wales is, | :05:54. | :05:57.
Use of electric cars is growing in Wales. | :05:58. | :06:03.
Latest figures show there are 1,725 licensed vehicles here, | :06:04. | :06:08.
The Welsh government says it wants to see that continued. | :06:09. | :06:14.
More of us choosing electric vehicles will help tackle carbon | :06:15. | :06:17.
But campaigners say a lack of charging infrastructure means | :06:18. | :06:22.
the switch isn't happening as quickly as it could. | :06:23. | :06:25.
People want to travel and use electric vehicles, but they can't | :06:26. | :06:28.
because infrastructure isn't there, and infrastructure isn't going to be | :06:29. | :06:31.
What I would like to see is government recognising that it | :06:32. | :06:35.
does need some grant and funding support. | :06:36. | :06:37.
Back in 2015, a report by transport experts commissioned by the Welsh | :06:38. | :06:41.
government made a string of recommendations to | :06:42. | :06:43.
They included installing charge points on all government property | :06:44. | :06:49.
and encouraging local authorities to do the same. | :06:50. | :06:51.
All the places that people want to go need to have | :06:52. | :06:54.
And so until we get to that level, I think we are still going | :06:55. | :07:02.
to struggle a bit to really make a difference in terms of our carbon | :07:03. | :07:06.
The Welsh government told us it was considering the recommendations | :07:07. | :07:09.
that it received and was committed to helping the low carbon vehicle | :07:10. | :07:12.
Back in Newtown, Richard is hoping it won't be too long before he has | :07:13. | :07:17.
other faster points to plug into, apart from his own. | :07:18. | :07:24.
Able and talented pupils are not getting enough attention | :07:25. | :07:28.
in Welsh schools according to the education watchdog Estyn. | :07:29. | :07:31.
It says schools focus on helping pupils on the borderline | :07:32. | :07:34.
The Welsh government agrees it needs to help able pupils | :07:35. | :07:39.
Snooker now and Lee Walker, Dominic Dale and Michael White | :07:40. | :07:48.
are all through to the last 32 of the Welsh open in Cardiff. | :07:49. | :07:51.
But the star of the show was 15-year-old Jackson | :07:52. | :07:53.
He's also through to the next round, out-performing some of the best | :07:54. | :07:59.
Let's see what the weather has in store - Derek has the forecast. | :08:00. | :08:10.
Jamie, I think we have seen the last of the cold weather for a while. In | :08:11. | :08:16.
fact, if out like spring this afternoon with some sunshine. | :08:17. | :08:20.
Temperatures in many places up to 12 Celsius. There is more mild weather | :08:21. | :08:23.
to come over the next few macro days. Showers in the south this | :08:24. | :08:28.
evening will clear. The rest of the night dry, clear spells. Some low | :08:29. | :08:34.
cloud and mist. Not a particularly cold light. A bit chilly in land. | :08:35. | :08:37.
Tomorrow morning, much of the country's drive. Right in places. | :08:38. | :08:44.
Some sunshine developing. Across the rest of the UK, watch out for the | :08:45. | :08:50.
patch in southern England if you are travelling. They will gradually but | :08:51. | :08:53.
during the morning. Most of the South Pine and dry. The two showers | :08:54. | :08:58.
and northern England. Breezy in Scotland with a few showers there. | :08:59. | :09:02.
Some rain into Northern Ireland, which will cross the Irish Sea to | :09:03. | :09:07.
North West England. 12 Celsius in London. Most of Wales dry tomorrow | :09:08. | :09:10.
afternoon, some bright spells, some sunshine. Rain spreading down into | :09:11. | :09:16.
the north of the afternoon was some of that could turn heavy. | :09:17. | :09:20.
Temperatures above average. Some rain in the north tomorrow evening | :09:21. | :09:25.
and overnight stop gradually turning light and dying out. Further south | :09:26. | :09:29.
it is dry, some low cloud and mist. A bridge of high pressure over us on | :09:30. | :09:33.
Friday with a cold front to the west of Ireland. Any list of fog on | :09:34. | :09:38.
Friday morning will lift. Some sunshine and dry but cloud spreading | :09:39. | :09:41.
from the West during the afternoon. Rain approaching Pembrokeshire. Over | :09:42. | :09:47.
the weekend a few spots of light rain and drizzle but no more than | :09:48. | :09:50.
that. On the whole, dry weather and staying on the mild side. The use | :09:51. | :09:52.
soon. Jamie. -- see you soon. From all of us on the | :09:53. | :09:58.
programme, goodnight. So, apparently Red Nose Day | :09:59. | :10:01.
is back... Cool. So, we... | :10:02. | :10:03.
We love Red Nose Day. Yes. So, Comic Relief have asked | :10:04. | :10:05.
if we can help with a bit a reboot of the show. | :10:06. | :10:08.
OK, cool. | :10:09. | :10:12. |
