joins us to say he is not scared of Brexit that he is worried that | :00:00. | :00:00.
politicians are thinking of nothing is because he thinks there are | :00:00. | :00:00.
bigger problems to deal with. Join me to find out more | :00:00. | :00:08.
Welcome to Wales Today. Our headlines tonight: | :00:09. | :00:11.
More than a billion pounds of investment for south-west Wales | :00:12. | :00:14.
as Prime Minister Theresa May signs off the Swansea City Region deal. | :00:15. | :00:19.
And how will Brexit affect farming here? | :00:20. | :00:22.
Its been described as the biggest ever investment in south-west Wales | :00:23. | :00:44.
with the aim of transforming the area over the next | :00:45. | :00:46.
The Swansea Bay City Region, which was signed off | :00:47. | :00:51.
by the Prime Minister today, is, according to its backers, | :00:52. | :00:54.
They claim it'll create 9,000 jobs across four counties, | :00:55. | :01:00.
from Pembrokeshire to Neath Port Talbot. | :01:01. | :01:03.
Here's our business correspondent Brian Meechan. | :01:04. | :01:09.
Theresa May swept into the Liberty Stadium to sign off | :01:10. | :01:13.
the agreement that will deliver the Swansea Bay city deal. | :01:14. | :01:16.
It focuses on creating highly skilled well-paid jobs | :01:17. | :01:19.
across south-west Wales in sectors including life sciences, | :01:20. | :01:22.
This city region deal that we will be signing today | :01:23. | :01:27.
is a very good example of working together, a partnership | :01:28. | :01:31.
that can deliver that and prosperity and growth. | :01:32. | :01:35.
There are 11 main projects across the four counties including | :01:36. | :01:39.
?40 million for a health care and well-being village | :01:40. | :01:42.
and ?5 million for a new creative hub that will be home to S4C. | :01:43. | :01:47.
The company behind this building on Swansea University's Bay campus | :01:48. | :01:51.
will be one of the beneficiaries of the city deal. | :01:52. | :01:54.
They build homes and offices that power themselves. | :01:55. | :01:57.
This could be an example of one of the buildings of the future. | :01:58. | :02:00.
Electricity comes from the integrated solar roofs and it's | :02:01. | :02:04.
able to operate even on overcast days like this one. | :02:05. | :02:08.
The walls have been designed to provide | :02:09. | :02:10.
If you were to build a million buildings like this, | :02:11. | :02:17.
you would get in the order of three gigawatts of capacity. | :02:18. | :02:20.
That's equivalent to a large nuclear power station. | :02:21. | :02:23.
The ?15 million this Homes as Power Stations scheme gets | :02:24. | :02:27.
from the city deal will unlock a further ?60 million investment, | :02:28. | :02:31.
making it a business that can deliver not just | :02:32. | :02:34.
The city deal was originally billed as creating the Internet coast | :02:35. | :02:41.
by the technology billionaire Sit Terry Matthews, | :02:42. | :02:44.
Central to it was a cable under the sea, delivering | :02:45. | :02:51.
the fastest broadband speeds from New York to Swansea. | :02:52. | :02:53.
That's not part of the latest city deal. | :02:54. | :02:55.
There are changes to this city deal from what was first proposed | :02:56. | :02:58.
There's much more emphasis on building projects. | :02:59. | :03:03.
On the one hand, some people see that this has made the city | :03:04. | :03:06.
On the other hand, there are those who believe that it's lost part | :03:07. | :03:11.
This is strategy, "You build it, they will come." | :03:12. | :03:16.
It's been discreteted by economic development | :03:17. | :03:19.
organisations around the world, so the question is, | :03:20. | :03:22.
why are they doing it here in Swansea Bay? | :03:23. | :03:24.
Critics point to the Technium project as an example of how | :03:25. | :03:28.
They were centres targeted at supporting businesses | :03:29. | :03:33.
and creating science and technology jobs. | :03:34. | :03:35.
More than half closed down with questions over | :03:36. | :03:38.
whether they provided value for money. | :03:39. | :03:40.
What's important is the impact this will have on people | :03:41. | :03:43.
in the region, including here on the streets of Carmarthen. | :03:44. | :03:46.
It's important it comes this far west and I think, | :03:47. | :03:50.
even if it stays in Swansea, it will benefit this area. | :03:51. | :03:54.
I think they want to concentrate on shops that are closing here. | :03:55. | :03:58.
This is the vision for what the region will look | :03:59. | :04:01.
The real work starts now in making that a reality. | :04:02. | :04:07.
The Prime Minister also used her visit to Swansea to urge | :04:08. | :04:10.
Welsh companies to strike deals around the world as she insisted | :04:11. | :04:14.
she would try to negotiate a free trade deal with the rest of the EU. | :04:15. | :04:18.
She also held talks with the First Minister Carwyn Jones | :04:19. | :04:22.
after he said Welsh support for the UK could be in doubt | :04:23. | :04:26.
if she did not listen to concerns about devolution. | :04:27. | :04:30.
We want to see a really good, comprehensive free-trade deal | :04:31. | :04:33.
It's something that the Welsh Government paper proposed. | :04:34. | :04:38.
We believe we want that for the whole of the United Kingdom. | :04:39. | :04:41.
We are going to be out there negotiating that. | :04:42. | :04:44.
That's going to be for the benefit of Wales and the whole UK. | :04:45. | :04:49.
A man from Cardiff who's admitted five terrorism charges was an active | :04:50. | :04:53.
member of so-called Islamic State, helping people prepare for acts of | :04:54. | :04:56.
Samata Ullah stored extremist information on a memory device | :04:57. | :05:03.
He'll be sentenced at the Old Bailey next month. | :05:04. | :05:09.
A man who says he was repeatedly assaulted and raped | :05:10. | :05:12.
by his psychiatrist, Dr Brian Harris, seen here, | :05:13. | :05:15.
"a sexual predator who knows how to handle people like me." | :05:16. | :05:21.
Dr Harris denies 13 charges of sexual assault | :05:22. | :05:24.
and rape against five men between 1991 and 2011. | :05:25. | :05:29.
On the day Downing Street confirmed the process of taking the UK out | :05:30. | :06:00.
Plenty to think about for the chair of the Welsh Affairs Committee, | :06:01. | :06:03.
He met farmers and union members in Meirionnydd | :06:04. | :06:07.
to hear their thoughts on agriculture post-Brexit. | :06:08. | :06:09.
The inquiry launched at Dolgellau farmers' market will address the key | :06:10. | :06:11.
issues for the future of farming in Wales once Britain leaves the EU. | :06:12. | :06:14.
Geraint Davies is a sheep farmer from Bala and relies on the European | :06:15. | :06:17.
market for exporting as much as 90% of his produce. | :06:18. | :06:20.
There's a risk of losing financial support which is very vital | :06:21. | :06:23.
Like a double-edged sword, we are going to be losing the free | :06:24. | :06:27.
trade within the European Union, which is very important | :06:28. | :06:30.
But Dafydd Jones thinks Brexit will give the Welsh farming industry | :06:31. | :06:36.
As an industry we have got, the average age is about 58, | :06:37. | :06:42.
you come to my county, Meirionnydd, it's well into the 60s. | :06:43. | :06:46.
And you just look at the general farming for the last year, | :06:47. | :06:50.
Agriculture is a massive part of the mid and north Wales economy. | :06:51. | :06:56.
Those farmers are reliant on European subsidies as hill | :06:57. | :07:05.
Welsh farming is heavily reliant on funding from the EU, | :07:06. | :07:12.
with ?274 million paid in subsidies each year. | :07:13. | :07:17.
We are going to need to have quite a few years of transition | :07:18. | :07:20.
What I personally believe, and I can't speak for the whole | :07:21. | :07:24.
committee, is that we need to make sure the amount of payments | :07:25. | :07:28.
going into agriculture are absolutely maintained. | :07:29. | :07:30.
But are maintained at the same level. | :07:31. | :07:35.
Back at Dolgellau mart, it's a very British menu, | :07:36. | :07:37.
but there still seems to be a taste for Europe from many of these | :07:38. | :07:41.
farmers as they focus on getting the right Brexit deal. | :07:42. | :07:44.
Football, and ahead of Wales' crucial World Cup qualifier | :07:45. | :07:48.
against the Republic of Ireland on Friday just one injury | :07:49. | :07:51.
Ipswich striker Tom Lawrence is out with an ankle injury. | :07:52. | :07:56.
Liverpool's Harry Wilson replaces him. | :07:57. | :07:58.
The players have assembled today and will travel | :07:59. | :08:00.
Let's get tonight's weather. Derek Brockway's got the forecast. | :08:01. | :08:06.
Today marked the spring equinox but it's going to feel a little more | :08:07. | :08:11.
like winter over the next couple of days with some wintry showers. | :08:12. | :08:15.
There will be showers dotted around, some of them heavy. | :08:16. | :08:20.
Sleet and snow on some of the hills and mountains. | :08:21. | :08:24.
Some clear weather as well tonight and cold enough inland | :08:25. | :08:27.
There will be a chill in the air tomorrow. | :08:28. | :08:32.
Some blue sky and sunshine but not dry everywhere. | :08:33. | :08:35.
You can see there will be showers again. | :08:36. | :08:37.
Across the rest of the UK, a similar story. | :08:38. | :08:43.
Rain and hail at low levels mostly but some settling snow | :08:44. | :08:53.
Dry in eastern counties and colder everywhere. | :08:54. | :08:58.
Chilly and breezy in Wales tomorrow afternoon. | :08:59. | :09:03.
A dusting of snow on some of the hills and mountains. | :09:04. | :09:12.
Temperatures lower than today with a south-westerly breeze. | :09:13. | :09:16.
A longer spell of rain tomorrow night. | :09:17. | :09:19.
Some of this heavy with sleet and snow on higher ground. | :09:20. | :09:22.
A few showers but some dry, sunny weather as well. | :09:23. | :09:30.
On Thursday, a north-easterly breeze will pick up. | :09:31. | :09:34.
That will make it feel decidedly cold. | :09:35. | :09:36.
One or two showers but otherwise dry and some bright spells. | :09:37. | :09:40.
And it's looking more settled and dry later in the week. | :09:41. | :09:44.
Some sunshine and promising for the weekend thanks to high pressure. | :09:45. | :09:48.
But gardeners watch out, there will be some overnight frost. | :09:49. | :09:53.
From all of us on the programme, good night. | :09:54. | :10:14.
The 24-year-old man has been charged with murder. | :10:15. | :10:17.
You made sure an innocent man is charged! | :10:18. | :10:20.
What gives you the right to say that he's innocent? | :10:21. | :10:23. |
