Counting the cost of fog - While passengers face delays Aurigny | :00:15. | :00:17.
say it's costing them up to a hundred thousand pounds a day | :00:18. | :00:22.
Good evening and welcome to the late news from BBC | :00:23. | :00:25.
Illegal and extremely dangerous - Snares found on public parkland | :00:26. | :00:31.
Something that is a barbaric method to do. | :00:32. | :00:49.
That's the cost of fog to one Channel Island airline. | :00:50. | :00:54.
Aurigny has confirmed today that paying for hotels and food | :00:55. | :00:56.
for stranded passengers as well as a loss of revenue | :00:57. | :01:00.
It comes after another day of travel disruption. | :01:01. | :01:03.
been doing a well roaring trade over the last few days. | :01:04. | :01:17.
Stranded passengers providing the boost. | :01:18. | :01:24.
And for some the delay is just the beginning of a long journey. | :01:25. | :01:27.
I'm going to London because I have got a transatlantic flight booked to | :01:28. | :01:30.
go and see my parents because my father's not very well. | :01:31. | :01:33.
It has all been delayed, so I have had to | :01:34. | :01:40.
rebook my transatlantic flight which costs money and I'm | :01:41. | :01:42.
still not guaranteed to get off today. | :01:43. | :01:44.
I had to book more holidays work, as well. | :01:45. | :01:48.
Is this your first visit to Guernsey? | :01:49. | :01:50.
What you think of the capability to | :01:51. | :01:58.
Just rang to get a flight is really difficult. | :01:59. | :02:04.
It is not their fault, they are trying their best, | :02:05. | :02:06.
but definitely I think the state should be focusing on this issue. | :02:07. | :02:09.
It was a similar story in Jersey where the fog's been | :02:10. | :02:12.
But it's not just the passengers feeling the pain. | :02:13. | :02:16.
Airlines can't insure themselves against fog as it's | :02:17. | :02:19.
For a company like Aurigny, the fog's been costing them up | :02:20. | :02:25.
Aurigny says it's looking at thermal-imaging technology to try | :02:26. | :02:32.
and improve its chances of landing and taking off in foggy conditions. | :02:33. | :02:35.
In simple terms, it is a headset that the pilot wears. | :02:36. | :02:45.
There is a camera on the nose of the aircraft | :02:46. | :02:52.
which looks through the fog and improves our success rate by | :02:53. | :02:55.
But another piece of equipment that could minimise fog disruption, | :02:56. | :03:02.
The Civil Aviation Authority has told me today that a system called | :03:03. | :03:06.
Egnos which uses satellites to cut through the fog should be up | :03:07. | :03:09.
and running in Guernsey by the summer at the latest. | :03:10. | :03:12.
Illegal, dangerous and a risk to dogs. | :03:13. | :03:14.
The recent discovery of three snare traps in a popular walking area | :03:15. | :03:16.
in Jersey has sparked warnings to dog owners. | :03:17. | :03:18.
But it's the sophistication of these latest devices that has | :03:19. | :03:21.
caused real safety concern as Emma Chambers reports... | :03:22. | :03:26.
They are used to catch food and vermin. | :03:27. | :03:29.
But today they are being described as archaic and inhumane | :03:30. | :03:33.
after the discovery of three snares in this area of St Ouen. | :03:34. | :03:43.
These anchors they had, the dog would have panicked and hurt itself | :03:44. | :03:50.
quite badly if it had been caught in it. They had their point years ago | :03:51. | :03:56.
when we were overrun but now I don't think they are needed. | :03:57. | :04:00.
You can see the long grass is a haven for dogs to run in. | :04:01. | :04:03.
The parish centennier showed me where they were found. | :04:04. | :04:05.
He says they are illegal in this parkland, but its the way | :04:06. | :04:08.
the traps were planted that's worried him the most. | :04:09. | :04:11.
We found two, two of these which are more lethal | :04:12. | :04:14.
than the original ones we found six months ago. | :04:15. | :04:17.
The difference between the snares is that one is stubby wooden | :04:18. | :04:20.
pushed into the sand, and it will come out very easily. | :04:21. | :04:25.
This one is totally different - long, you can see how long it is - | :04:26. | :04:29.
and what will happen is a rabbit or dog or whatever animal | :04:30. | :04:31.
is will go along, he'll go in through there and that will pull | :04:32. | :04:39.
We are surprised and very disappointed. | :04:40. | :04:47.
This is a great dog walking area, these things are dangerous to dogs | :04:48. | :04:49.
and we just didn't expect to ever see them again but they are here. | :04:50. | :04:55.
The JSPCA is now calling for an outright ban of all snares, | :04:56. | :04:58.
not just the self-tightening devices and those on protected land. | :04:59. | :05:04.
There's many other methods to catch wild animals that can be caught | :05:05. | :05:07.
for food such as rabbits and wood pigeons and then of course | :05:08. | :05:10.
there is vermin as well which does have to be controlled - | :05:11. | :05:13.
I recognise that but equally there are many other methods you can | :05:14. | :05:16.
use rather than something that comes from the early 18th century | :05:17. | :05:19.
and is quite honestly in the 21st century a barbaric method to do. | :05:20. | :05:29.
But until that happens, officials are relying on islanders | :05:30. | :05:30.
Especially those that shouldn't be used on Jersey's protected reserves. | :05:31. | :05:36.
Earlier today I spoke to John Pinel the Principal Ecologist | :05:37. | :05:39.
at the Department of the Environment and asked him how serious | :05:40. | :05:41.
would the injuries be if a pet was to get trapped by one | :05:42. | :05:44.
They are very nasty things and they can quickly cause damage. The | :05:45. | :06:02.
problem is if a cat could get stuck in the snare that ours, the lesions | :06:03. | :06:09.
become particularly bad when animals struggle. Three have been found in | :06:10. | :06:14.
the last week. Are you concerned about them? We are concerned. We | :06:15. | :06:22.
found three in a similar place last year. Who do you think would be | :06:23. | :06:28.
setting them and why would they be doing this? I have no idea in this | :06:29. | :06:36.
day and age who will be seeking to kill rabbits in this way. There are | :06:37. | :06:42.
many other ways of taking rabbits. As a department, would you like to | :06:43. | :06:52.
see an outright ban? Self locking scared -- snares are banned but | :06:53. | :06:56.
sliding ones are not. We have to look at this problem. How concerned | :06:57. | :07:03.
should dog walkers and people be about the snares being in place? On | :07:04. | :07:09.
the whole it is probably a low risk. There are many dangers in the | :07:10. | :07:15.
countryside. The real risk about the snares is to wildlife. We have a lot | :07:16. | :07:20.
of protected species which could be caught in these snares. People | :07:21. | :07:21.
shouldn't be overly concerned. Same-sex marriages could take place | :07:22. | :07:25.
in Guernsey as early as May. The law will be reviewed early next | :07:26. | :07:28.
month, before being ratified If approved, it could come | :07:29. | :07:30.
into effect on the 2nd of May. Jersey Police are donating unclaimed | :07:31. | :07:37.
jewellery to the charity The collection of watches, | :07:38. | :07:38.
chains, and rings have been in storage at the police station | :07:39. | :07:44.
for over three years. Most of the time, the police can | :07:45. | :07:47.
reunite owners with their lost or stolen property but that hasn't | :07:48. | :07:49.
been the case with this jewellery. Jersey Hospice will sell it to raise | :07:50. | :07:53.
money to provide care We are going to get the jewellery | :07:54. | :08:06.
valued and will decide on what the best course of action is and how we | :08:07. | :08:11.
can maximise the value for the charity. Some pieces are nice but I | :08:12. | :08:17.
suspect they are costume jewellery pieces. Some are wedding rings and | :08:18. | :08:21.
could have significant value and we will decide how to raise the most | :08:22. | :08:23.
money once we decide how much they money once we decide how much they | :08:24. | :08:25.
are worth. Sport news and the Court | :08:26. | :08:27.
of Arbitration for Sport will this summer rule | :08:28. | :08:30.
on whether Jersey's bid to join the football governing body Uefa | :08:31. | :08:32.
should be considered The Jersey FA wants the island to be | :08:33. | :08:34.
given international status - it's currently run like a county, | :08:35. | :08:41.
affiliated to the English FA. Last year, Uefa officials | :08:42. | :08:44.
rejected the application, arguing the island isn't recognised | :08:45. | :08:46.
as an independent state. But Jersey believe their bid | :08:47. | :08:48.
should at least be put The weather is always a popular | :08:49. | :08:53.
conversation even more so over the last few days | :08:54. | :09:02.
because of the fog. Can Bee Tucker put a smile | :09:03. | :09:05.
on air travellers faces. Good evening. We have seen very | :09:06. | :09:16.
little in the way of sunshine today. The hill fog will continue through | :09:17. | :09:21.
the night. Many of you have had scenes like this and you can see how | :09:22. | :09:29.
the cloud is. Tomorrow, we will keep a lot of cloud over us. There will | :09:30. | :09:33.
be some light rain into the afternoon and with the westerly | :09:34. | :09:37.
winds picking up, some of the low cloud should lift in places. We are | :09:38. | :09:42.
south of this weather front and we have warm air that has left us with | :09:43. | :09:48.
cloud and hill fog and poor visibility that will remain | :09:49. | :09:53.
overnight. We start to pick up through the day. This weather front | :09:54. | :09:57.
will be sinking southwards. You can expect light rain during the | :09:58. | :10:01.
afternoon and early evening. The wind is really picking up and we | :10:02. | :10:06.
have some light rain and drizzle. Hill fog is still remaining. A very | :10:07. | :10:11.
mild night and these temperatures you would expect by day. Below of | :10:12. | :10:17.
nine Celsius. A graze start of the day perhaps drizzle and fog. The | :10:18. | :10:23.
westerly wind picks up and that should clear the cloud in places but | :10:24. | :10:28.
I don't think it will break. Towards the tail end of the day, we will | :10:29. | :10:34.
start to see that rain sinking southwards. Tomorrow, the last of | :10:35. | :10:38.
the mild days and temperatures making it up to 11 Celsius. For | :10:39. | :10:44.
Thursday, you can expect some strong winds. Storm Doris has been named. | :10:45. | :10:55.
You can expect 40 to 50 mph gusts. Have a good evening. That is it from | :10:56. | :11:00.
the late news team. I am back tomorrow night at 6:30pm. I will see | :11:01. | :11:03.
you then. Good night. the Outlook toward the end of the | :11:04. | :11:08.
week and then milder again from the wheel them. More on storm Doris now | :11:09. | :11:09.
with Matt Taylor. | :11:10. | :11:12. |
