Counting the cost of fog - While passengers face delays Aurigny

That's the cost of fog to one Channel Island airline.

Aurigny has confirmed today that paying for hotels and food

The recent discovery of three snare traps in a popular walking area

in Jersey has sparked warnings to dog owners.

But it's the sophistication of these latest devices that has

caused real safety concern as Emma Chambers reports...

They are used to catch food and vermin.

But today they are being described as archaic and inhumane

after the discovery of three snares in this area of St Ouen.

These anchors they had, the dog would have panicked and hurt itself

quite badly if it had been caught in it. They had their point years ago

when we were overrun but now I don't think they are needed.

You can see the long grass is a haven for dogs to run in.

The parish centennier showed me where they were found.

He says they are illegal in this parkland, but its the way

the traps were planted that's worried him the most.

We found two, two of these which are more lethal

than the original ones we found six months ago.

The difference between the snares is that one is stubby wooden

pushed into the sand, and it will come out very easily.

This one is totally different - long, you can see how long it is -

and what will happen is a rabbit or dog or whatever animal

is will go along, he'll go in through there and that will pull

We are surprised and very disappointed.

This is a great dog walking area, these things are dangerous to dogs

and we just didn't expect to ever see them again but they are here.

The JSPCA is now calling for an outright ban of all snares,

not just the self-tightening devices and those on protected land.

There's many other methods to catch wild animals that can be caught

for food such as rabbits and wood pigeons and then of course

there is vermin as well which does have to be controlled -

I recognise that but equally there are many other methods you can

use rather than something that comes from the early 18th century

and is quite honestly in the 21st century a barbaric method to do.

But until that happens, officials are relying on islanders

Especially those that shouldn't be used on Jersey's protected reserves.

Earlier today I spoke to John Pinel the Principal Ecologist

at the Department of the Environment and asked him how serious

would the injuries be if a pet was to get trapped by one

They are very nasty things and they can quickly cause damage. The

problem is if a cat could get stuck in the snare that ours, the lesions

become particularly bad when animals struggle. Three have been found in

the last week. Are you concerned about them? We are concerned. We

found three in a similar place last year. Who do you think would be

setting them and why would they be doing this? I have no idea in this

day and age who will be seeking to kill rabbits in this way. There are

many other ways of taking rabbits. As a department, would you like to

see an outright ban? Self locking scared -- snares are banned but

sliding ones are not. We have to look at this problem. How concerned

should dog walkers and people be about the snares being in place? On

the whole it is probably a low risk. There are many dangers in the

countryside. The real risk about the snares is to wildlife. We have a lot

of protected species which could be caught in these snares. People

shouldn't be overly concerned. Same-sex marriages could take place

in Guernsey as early as May. The law will be reviewed early next

month, before being ratified If approved, it could come

into effect on the 2nd of May. Jersey Police are donating unclaimed

jewellery to the charity The collection of watches,

chains, and rings have been in storage at the police station

for over three years. Most of the time, the police can

reunite owners with their lost or stolen property but that hasn't

been the case with this jewellery. Jersey Hospice will sell it to raise

money to provide care We are going to get the jewellery

valued and will decide on what the best course of action is and how we

can maximise the value for the charity. Some pieces are nice but I

suspect they are costume jewellery pieces. Some are wedding rings and

could have significant value and we will decide how to raise the most

money once we decide how much they money once we decide how much they

little in the way of sunshine today. The hill fog will continue through

the night. Many of you have had scenes like this and you can see how

the cloud is. Tomorrow, we will keep a lot of cloud over us. There will

be some light rain into the afternoon and with the westerly

winds picking up, some of the low cloud should lift in places. We are

south of this weather front and we have warm air that has left us with

cloud and hill fog and poor visibility that will remain

overnight. We start to pick up through the day. This weather front

will be sinking southwards. You can expect light rain during the

afternoon and early evening. The wind is really picking up and we

have some light rain and drizzle. Hill fog is still remaining. A very

mild night and these temperatures you would expect by day. Below of

nine Celsius. A graze start of the day perhaps drizzle and fog. The

westerly wind picks up and that should clear the cloud in places but

I don't think it will break. Towards the tail end of the day, we will

start to see that rain sinking southwards. Tomorrow, the last of

the mild days and temperatures making it up to 11 Celsius. For

Thursday, you can expect some strong winds. Storm Doris has been named.
