Is the celebrity obsession with weight to blame

:00:11.:00:12.

for girls as young as ten going on diets in Guernsey?

:00:13.:00:21.

If you talk to even quite young children, six, 78 years old, how

:00:22.:00:27.

they feel about how they look, quite a number of them are unhappy with

:00:28.:00:32.

how they look and some would describe themselves as fat.

:00:33.:00:34.

Good evening and welcome to the late news from BBC Channel Islands.

:00:35.:00:37.

Charities in Jersey as being encouraged to help

:00:38.:00:41.

There's concern children as young as six in Guernsey are becoming too

:00:42.:00:48.

focused on their weight, with one local eating disorder

:00:49.:00:50.

specialist saying in particular it's worrying how many ten-year-old girls

:00:51.:00:52.

A recent survey revealed a third of primary school pupils

:00:53.:01:01.

They're rich, they're famous, and, on the whole, they're thin and often

:01:02.:01:09.

But is celebrity culture making us all too obsessed with our looks?

:01:10.:01:13.

And, worryingly, is it it rubbing off on our children?

:01:14.:01:21.

Even quite young children, six, seven, eight years old,

:01:22.:01:23.

actually quite a number of them are unhappy about how they look,

:01:24.:01:26.

A number of them, shockingly enough, say that they have been on a diet.

:01:27.:01:36.

It's something nurses like Christine often come across.

:01:37.:01:38.

She mainly deals with children that are perhaps overweight but she says

:01:39.:01:41.

If parents can avoid saying that they are going on a diet,

:01:42.:01:48.

I think if they don't give those messages out.

:01:49.:01:51.

You eat food because it is nice food, that is a much better

:01:52.:01:54.

Schools like this one are doing their bit,

:01:55.:02:00.

with lessons focusing on making kids proud of their bodies.

:02:01.:02:06.

Children are open to more things, for example the use of social media,

:02:07.:02:13.

Rather than taking a negative slant, looking and comparing,

:02:14.:02:20.

we've chosen to go down the positive route of celebrating

:02:21.:02:23.

Everybody is different becuase they have different

:02:24.:02:27.

They can think differently and feel differently.

:02:28.:02:34.

I always hear lots of adults saying, "I am on a diet."

:02:35.:02:39.

Actually it is not a diet, it is just a healthy lifestyle,

:02:40.:02:42.

it is just what your lifestyle should be.

:02:43.:02:47.

And, a lesson for us all to take on board perhaps.

:02:48.:02:53.

Well, earlier today I spoke to Rosie Williams

:02:54.:02:55.

who volunteers at The Hub - a charity in Guernsey that

:02:56.:02:57.

offers support and advice to children from 11 to 18.

:02:58.:03:00.

I started by asking her if this was an issue she'd experienced.

:03:01.:03:11.

People come to us for a whole range of issues and one of the most

:03:12.:03:18.

prominent as concerns about body image and self-confidence. It can be

:03:19.:03:24.

a huge issue and I think it is often quite unspoken about so people will

:03:25.:03:27.

come and talk to us but maybe will not tell their friends or family.

:03:28.:03:28.

If so many Guernsey youngsters are concerned about their weight

:03:29.:03:30.

from a young age, would you say they're more likely to develop

:03:31.:03:33.

I think it is certainly a really higher risk. There are links between

:03:34.:03:47.

body image and eating disorders. If it is not tackled from an early age

:03:48.:03:49.

then it can definitely escalate. What advice would you give

:03:50.:03:50.

to a young girl or young man who might be concerned

:03:51.:03:53.

about their weight? I would definitely say to talk to

:03:54.:04:00.

someone about it, your friends and family, open up. If you start

:04:01.:04:07.

talking to people about it you can kind of tackle some of those issues

:04:08.:04:10.

and see if maybe some of those thoughts are quite destructive or

:04:11.:04:11.

concerning. If you don't tackle this now,

:04:12.:04:12.

how serious a problem could the island be facing

:04:13.:04:14.

in five years' time? It could be a lot more eating

:04:15.:04:28.

disorders and other issues, Laura mood, -- Lower mood, anxiety and

:04:29.:04:38.

body issues. Is this a ticking time bomb? Yes.

:04:39.:05:01.

The body of a man has been recovered from rocks at Crabby Beach

:05:02.:05:04.

in Alderney..Earlier this evening the Channel Islands Air Search

:05:05.:05:06.

and the Alderney lifeboat were called out to look for Alderney

:05:07.:05:09.

resident Keith Jones, who was reported missing

:05:10.:05:11.

Guernsey police do not believe there are any suspicious

:05:12.:05:14.

circumstances and the death is being treated as unexplained.A

:05:15.:05:16.

Formal identification has not yet been carried out .

:05:17.:05:20.

A postmortem examination is to be carried out on the body of a man

:05:21.:05:24.

recovered from the sea at Pleinmont in Guernsey.

:05:25.:05:26.

A large scale air, land and sea search was carried out over

:05:27.:05:29.

the weekend for 50-year-old Patrick Eker, who went

:05:30.:05:31.

A formal identification is expected later.

:05:32.:05:33.

The police are not treating the death as suspicious.

:05:34.:05:35.

A disciplinary hearing has heard how an ambulance station officer

:05:36.:05:38.

in Guernsey failed to follow up a 999 call from an elderly man

:05:39.:05:41.

Jason Garnham was on duty when Alan Hamilton dialled 999 -

:05:42.:05:45.

but the call was cut off and attempts to call him

:05:46.:05:48.

Procedures including logging the call and dispatching the police

:05:49.:05:50.

and ambulance were not followed through and Mr Hamilton's body

:05:51.:05:53.

The hearing in Southampton continues.

:05:54.:05:57.

Charities in Jersey are being encouraged to hire people who've

:05:58.:05:59.

been unemployed for a long time, using a States Back To Work scheme.

:06:00.:06:02.

The scheme offers companies and other groups funding

:06:03.:06:04.

for training and up to six months' salary if they take

:06:05.:06:07.

But there's some concern it doesn't suit much of the charity sector.

:06:08.:06:11.

Sammi is learning the ropes for her new admin role

:06:12.:06:19.

at a young people's charity - the Barnardo's service

:06:20.:06:21.

Previously unemployed, her salary here is being covered

:06:22.:06:28.

Without this help, the charity couldn't have afforded her.

:06:29.:06:32.

Sammi's come in and she's picked up the admin work for Plan B.

:06:33.:06:35.

She's able to do the basic admin and project workers are able to work

:06:36.:06:38.

with young people on the ground so, yeah, a huge difference.

:06:39.:06:41.

Sammi isn't the only one who's found work through this

:06:42.:06:44.

The Social Security department set the scheme up three

:06:45.:06:52.

and a half years ago, and it's so far cost

:06:53.:06:55.

It's funded roles for 150 roles for people who were previously out

:06:56.:06:58.

of work and, of those, about half had their employment

:06:59.:07:01.

extended in those placements or found work elsewhere.

:07:02.:07:07.

But, while it doesn't have exact figures, the department admits

:07:08.:07:09.

there's a relatively low take-up of the scheme among charities.

:07:10.:07:11.

They're trying to change that, but it seems they might

:07:12.:07:14.

The scheme doesn't work as well for charities as it does

:07:15.:07:19.

The charities don't always have the resources to continue

:07:20.:07:22.

employing that person, so unfortunately they take them

:07:23.:07:24.

for the short time that covers it and then they have to let them go.

:07:25.:07:32.

So can the States do anything to help?

:07:33.:07:34.

Obviously, some charities do continue employing people

:07:35.:07:36.

particularly if they've been beneficial to the organisation,

:07:37.:07:38.

It's sad if the charity can't continue with employment but,

:07:39.:07:41.

from the client's perspective, they've had valuable

:07:42.:07:43.

This particular Jersey charity has had previous

:07:44.:07:57.

success with the scheme, but even they admit finances

:07:58.:07:59.

will have to be assessed before they can commit to keeping Sammi

:08:00.:08:02.

on after the six-month funding runs out.

:08:03.:08:09.

Sport now and it's been announced that Guernsey and Jersey cricket

:08:10.:08:12.

teams will be heading to Johnannsburg later in the year

:08:13.:08:14.

for the World Cricket League Five tournament.

:08:15.:08:16.

The South African city was chosen over Jersey and the Netherlands

:08:17.:08:19.

2017 is going to be an exciting year for Guernsey cricket according

:08:20.:08:24.

to the head of the sport in the island.

:08:25.:08:25.

Jersey Reds have climbed to fifth in the Championship

:08:26.:08:28.

They beat Rotherham Titans 17-9 at St Peter.

:08:29.:08:33.

And Congratulations to Guernsey's Ladies Rugby Team

:08:34.:08:34.

They ended their season in style with an 85-0 victory over Worthing.

:08:35.:08:47.

It's the start of another week so let's see what the forecast has

:08:48.:08:50.

We have seen some sunshine today. We have seen a spell of rain but the

:08:51.:09:00.

weather front has cleared and we have clear skies. We will see a

:09:01.:09:06.

little more sunshine than today. As we had through this week, it will be

:09:07.:09:11.

a cold start, certainly the next few days, some rain at times, sometimes

:09:12.:09:17.

quite heavy. Breezy as well. It will settle down towards the end of the

:09:18.:09:22.

week. The cold front has cleared out of the way so a little bit of a

:09:23.:09:25.

breeze but largely clear skies overnight, one or two showers.

:09:26.:09:29.

Tomorrow through daylight hours it will be a much better day. It will

:09:30.:09:35.

feel cold but it should be dry with plenty of sunshine. Wednesday is a

:09:36.:09:41.

bit of a mess. Early rain followed by brightness in the afternoon and

:09:42.:09:48.

much lighter winds. Thursday, rain and merging into a heavy downpours.

:09:49.:09:51.

Some hail and thunder as well. Friday settles down, much brighter

:09:52.:09:58.

conditions and like winds. Some showers at the moment clearing

:09:59.:10:03.

through quickly on a brisk wind. Largely clear skies between the

:10:04.:10:07.

showers but even with the breeze we could get down as low as 5-6 saw it

:10:08.:10:12.

it's going to be a chilly night. One or two isolated showers tomorrow but

:10:13.:10:17.

by the time most of us get up it will be dry and bright with a lot of

:10:18.:10:21.

sunshine. Still breezy and I think it will be deceptive because you

:10:22.:10:25.

will see blue skies but it will still feel cold. Temperatures 9-10.

:10:26.:10:32.

Showers and outbreaks of brain through the middle part of the week

:10:33.:10:35.

and it settles down through Friday into the weekend and it will warm up

:10:36.:10:37.

slightly. That's your news

:10:38.:10:39.

this Monday evening. BBC Radio Guernsey and Jersey

:10:40.:10:40.

will have bulletins from six tomorrow morning and I'll be back

:10:41.:10:42.

at 6.30 tomorrow. outlook for Saturday and Sunday is

:10:43.:11:04.

for something dry and settled, sunny spells but a bit on the cool side.

:11:05.:11:12.

This week we are starting off with a taste of winter. This is Paul and

:11:13.:11:20.

maritime air, it has come from a long way north and will push in lots

:11:21.:11:25.

of showers. The last of any mild air gets swept away with the cloud.

:11:26.:11:28.

Tonight we have showers mostly across the northern half of the UK,

:11:29.:11:36.

which will turn wintry and that means more snow, particularly across

:11:37.:11:40.

Scotland and Northern Ireland, perhaps northern

:11:41.:11:41.
