This is East Midlands Today. Our top story: anti-capitalism | :00:08. | :00:13.
protesters prepare for a long campaign. They have been occupying | :00:13. | :00:17.
the market square for three weeks. They say they will still be here | :00:17. | :00:23.
for Christmas but what have they achieved? Also tonight: the Derby | :00:23. | :00:26.
cabbie who says he has been the target of racist vandalism. | :00:26. | :00:33.
Plus finally open after years of fund-raising. A striking new Cancer | :00:33. | :00:39.
Centre that feels a lot like home. And Noddy and I will be exploring a | :00:39. | :00:45.
little-known tradition that comes around every November. It is the | :00:45. | :00:55.
:00:55. | :01:03. | ||
Good evening. Protesters who have set up camp in the centre of | :01:03. | :01:06.
Nottingham it say they are preparing to spend Christmas there. | :01:06. | :01:12.
It is part of that global campaign against financial inequality, but | :01:12. | :01:17.
after almost three weeks camping out, what have they achieved? | :01:17. | :01:25.
Jeremy Ball is in the Old Market Square. This camp has been growing | :01:25. | :01:30.
over the last few weeks. There are more than 30 tents here now. They | :01:30. | :01:36.
have just started their evening at 630 assembly. Some of these | :01:36. | :01:39.
protesters come and go, some stay overnight but it is getting people | :01:39. | :01:46.
talking. We do a lot for this country. If you think people do not | :01:46. | :01:53.
care about politics, come and listen to this. All they want is to | :01:53. | :01:57.
change the world. I have given up my warm bed and the comforts of | :01:57. | :02:02.
home to come here because it needed doing. Somebody had to start that | :02:02. | :02:08.
process of change and bring it home to Nottingham. Four we are talking | :02:08. | :02:14.
about your granny with meals on wheels to the young mother next | :02:14. | :02:19.
door and things that everybody can relate to. They are kitted out for | :02:19. | :02:25.
the long haul. They have even brought the kitchen sink and they | :02:25. | :02:31.
are digging in. We have a stove brought out of donations given to | :02:31. | :02:38.
us. We can cook Christmas dinner. I have achieved a connection with the | :02:38. | :02:43.
people of Nottingham that I did not feel the full. Even though I have | :02:43. | :02:47.
lived here all my life. We have had a problem with some people's | :02:47. | :02:52.
attitudes. No one is in charge here said they are meetings in the camp | :02:52. | :02:56.
to help make decisions. Today's agenda the cleaning rota and how | :02:56. | :03:00.
they will mark Remembrance Day. How do they answer the charge that it | :03:00. | :03:04.
is pointless and that a protest like this will never change the | :03:04. | :03:08.
financial system? A lot of us have hope because without the hope, it | :03:08. | :03:13.
is a rather sad looking world. You have to try. Will you change the | :03:13. | :03:20.
world? Yes eventually. The world will change and evolution through | :03:21. | :03:25.
evolution is what we aim to achieve. It is a big ambition and they know | :03:25. | :03:29.
there were people who think their demands are naive but it will not | :03:29. | :03:34.
stop them trying. We have seen a huge row over plans | :03:34. | :03:39.
to evict a camp just like this are outside St Paul's. Are the | :03:39. | :03:43.
Nottingham protesters going to be made Don? Not at this stage. They | :03:43. | :03:47.
have agreed to move voluntary from the other side of the Old Market | :03:47. | :03:52.
Square, but I have spoken to the police and the council who say | :03:52. | :03:57.
there are no plans to shut the Camperdown. There seemed to be good | :03:57. | :04:02.
relationships with the authorities here. They are more worried about | :04:02. | :04:06.
people coming To Town tonight, getting drunk and causing problems, | :04:06. | :04:11.
so much so that some of the people have been running security teams to | :04:11. | :04:18.
protect the camp. They say they are here for the long haul. | :04:18. | :04:21.
A taxi driver says he and his family feel like prisoners in their | :04:21. | :04:26.
own home after a string of attacks on their property. In the latest | :04:26. | :04:31.
incident, racist graffiti was daubed on their driveway. Earlier | :04:31. | :04:37.
this year a brand new car was set alight and destroyed. Police say | :04:37. | :04:44.
they are treating the incidents very seriously. | :04:44. | :04:47.
Halloway and is known for some mischief but this is much more | :04:47. | :04:52.
sinister. Two dudes spray lettering on a driveway on Monday night | :04:52. | :04:58.
before running away. Jagtar Shergill discovered the graffiti | :04:58. | :05:04.
the next day. He is hoping the CCTV footage could help to identify the | :05:04. | :05:09.
culprits. They are just cowards, doing something behind your back, | :05:09. | :05:14.
picking on your kids. Earlier this year, reported higher brand new | :05:14. | :05:18.
Mini used by his daughter was destroyed in a late-night arson | :05:18. | :05:22.
attack. Those responsible were also caught on camera, but not brought | :05:22. | :05:28.
to justice. After the arson attack, Jagtar Shergill decided to have | :05:29. | :05:32.
electronic gates fitted to his property. They will be installed | :05:32. | :05:37.
later this week and he says after this latest incident, it cannot | :05:37. | :05:41.
come soon enough. He has also recently invested in more cameras | :05:41. | :05:46.
and a dog to guard the family in their home. I am not the one that | :05:46. | :05:52.
should be in prison. It seems like I am coming into a prison. We are | :05:52. | :05:57.
treating this Ferris seriously. It is a racially aggravated offence | :05:57. | :06:03.
where graffiti has been sprayed in this gentleman strive. The police | :06:03. | :06:07.
say they will not more patrols in the area but Jagtar Shergill says | :06:07. | :06:15.
he fears it will not prevent another attack on his home. | :06:15. | :06:21.
Still to come: we will have a special guest in the studio - | :06:21. | :06:24.
cricketer Graeme Swann will be joining Natalie for sport and there | :06:25. | :06:34.
:06:35. | :06:38. | ||
Traffic was brought to a standstill this morning after construction | :06:38. | :06:43.
workers held a protest at the Ratcliffe Soar power station. The | :06:43. | :06:47.
workers claim they have been told to sign new contracts or leave but | :06:47. | :06:51.
the Unite union says the new contracts would merge grades and | :06:51. | :06:56.
cut pay by 30 %. It will ballot its members on industrial action. | :06:56. | :06:59.
The decision on the future of children's heart surgery at | :06:59. | :07:04.
Leicester is expected in just over six weeks. The centre at Glenfield | :07:04. | :07:08.
Hospital is one of several across England under threat as part of a | :07:08. | :07:11.
government review. The Department of Health is considering which | :07:11. | :07:15.
children's cardiac centres should be closed with the aim of creating | :07:15. | :07:20.
fewer larger centres of excellence. An announcement is expected in | :07:20. | :07:25.
December. Here are some good news, after four | :07:25. | :07:29.
years of fund-raising and thousands of donations, a new support centre | :07:29. | :07:33.
for people affected by cancer has officially open. International | :07:33. | :07:37.
fashion designer Sir Paul Smith helped to the honours at the Maggie | :07:37. | :07:41.
Centre in his home city of Nottingham. The eye-catching centre | :07:41. | :07:46.
is run by a charity and aims to offer free, practical and emotional | :07:46. | :07:52.
support to anyone affected by cancer. | :07:52. | :07:58.
After years of fund-raising the the big day. Maggie's is opening. The | :07:58. | :08:02.
eye-catching building has been likened to a giant teapot. To | :08:02. | :08:06.
others it is a tree house. The inside has been styled by Paul | :08:06. | :08:11.
Smith. Being a Brit we all like a cup of tea and we have put a lot of | :08:11. | :08:16.
emphasis on the kitchen. He hopes the design will prove an ice- | :08:16. | :08:22.
breaker. What I have tried to do is make it quirky. I understand it | :08:23. | :08:29.
might not be to everybody's taste. This is one of the sitting REM's | :08:29. | :08:34.
which is really lovely because it is very comfortable. A lot of | :08:34. | :08:40.
muddied things are very shallow in the seat, very low but this one you | :08:40. | :08:44.
can really get comfortable in. That is what I have tried to do in | :08:44. | :08:49.
through the whole building. Optimistic colours, lots of things, | :08:49. | :08:53.
conversation starters. Are you pleased to be associated with | :08:53. | :08:58.
something in Nottingham? Yes. People have said, how has this carp | :08:58. | :09:08.
about? They asked me. Nottingham lad born and bred. It is wonderful | :09:08. | :09:12.
to be associated with it. architect said his dream was to | :09:12. | :09:17.
create a magical meeting place. reads more homely than | :09:17. | :09:21.
institutional, which is the important thing. That it should | :09:21. | :09:25.
feel like a place that you are comfortable being in. Nottingham | :09:25. | :09:31.
Post readers help make it possible raising over 600,000. We never | :09:31. | :09:35.
thought it was a gamble because we've always thought the people of | :09:35. | :09:41.
Nottingham would raise the money to build the centre. Sarah Brown, wife | :09:41. | :09:45.
of Prom our Prime Minister of Gordon Brown, met a cancer patient. | :09:45. | :09:50.
It is therefore everything. Financial advice, psychological | :09:50. | :09:57.
support, advice on nutrition. is the essential link between | :09:57. | :10:02.
diagnosis and answers - where do you go from here? Coup do you pass? | :10:02. | :10:07.
At last with its eye-catching design, the Maggie's house in | :10:07. | :10:14.
Nottingham is open. Leicestershire police say more | :10:14. | :10:18.
people used its new it non- emergency number on Hannah wing. 75 | :10:18. | :10:25.
people have dialled one by one on the night. 61 calls the related to | :10:25. | :10:30.
flour and eggs being thrown at houses. Officers handed out 60,000 | :10:30. | :10:34.
posters to elderly and vulnerable residents as part of a campaign to | :10:34. | :10:38.
reduce anti-social behaviour. The supermarkets Sainsbury's says | :10:38. | :10:43.
it plans to create 350 new jobs at West Bridgford in Nottingham. That | :10:43. | :10:47.
is because it wants to build a new store there. The supermarket giant | :10:47. | :10:51.
is proposing to redevelop the former Chateau pub side on Wilford | :10:51. | :10:57.
Lane. It will have more than 600 parking spaces and so not -- solar | :10:57. | :11:00.
panels. The company says it will be one of the most environmentally | :11:00. | :11:05.
friendly stores in the UK. More than 300,000 adults in the | :11:05. | :11:09.
East Midlands have dyslexia, a lifelong condition. As part of a | :11:09. | :11:13.
series to mark National Dyslexia Awareness Week, Carol Hinds has | :11:13. | :11:17.
been to meet two men who have very different approaches to living with | :11:17. | :11:23.
dyslexia. Paul has two degrees. The Derby | :11:23. | :11:28.
University graduate has not let his dyslexia hold him back. It is a | :11:28. | :11:34.
colour associated dyslexia. I cannot see letters very well. I c a | :11:34. | :11:38.
spectrum of colour, so if you see a page of words, I would see a | :11:38. | :11:46.
rainbow. My involvement with Paul is to help our articulate his | :11:46. | :11:52.
working words. Paul and I will talk through his ideas, his concepts and | :11:52. | :11:58.
we will work towards putting, taking his words and I type them | :11:58. | :12:05.
and write them and put them together. I can get the computer to | :12:06. | :12:11.
play my e-mails that to me or at any text I need. It makes things a | :12:11. | :12:16.
lot simpler. Steve Davis in Leicestershire were seven years old | :12:16. | :12:22.
when he was diagnosed with dyslexia. Letters would get mixed up. Numbers | :12:22. | :12:31.
would get mixed up. Reading aloud would be a massive issue. If | :12:31. | :12:36.
someone said, can you read aloud, that would be horrendous. Almost 20 | :12:36. | :12:41.
years after being diagnosed, he saw a news item about this programme. | :12:41. | :12:46.
They are doing physically exercise on a daily basis and repeating them | :12:46. | :12:51.
and the aim is that is stimulating the cerebellum, which is the back | :12:51. | :12:57.
part of the brain, the brain Skill Centre. This is one of the first | :12:57. | :13:02.
exercises I had to do. I would have to keep my head straight, my eyes | :13:02. | :13:08.
focused on the been back and throw it up, track, drop and catch. | :13:08. | :13:12.
is working in the care industry and studying for qualifications. Paul | :13:12. | :13:17.
is completing an arts project ahead of next year's Olympic Games. Both | :13:17. | :13:27.
:13:27. | :13:41. | ||
men have found a way to work with Today they planted a tree at Jesse | :13:41. | :13:46.
Gray School in West Bridgford to mark the day of their celebrations. | :13:46. | :13:52.
I enjoyed it very much. It was an honour to be part of it. It was | :13:52. | :13:57.
really cool. We have never really met anyone from the Royal Family | :13:57. | :14:06.
before. The cricket team said hello. They answer some questions. Saving | :14:06. | :14:11.
to the Queen's cousin's wife was a great honour and I do not think we | :14:11. | :14:18.
will ever do it again. Now to a tale of selflessness and generosity. | :14:18. | :14:22.
A war veteran celebrating his 90th birthday has turned down offers of | :14:22. | :14:27.
gifts, saying he wants donations to go to a charity instead. George | :14:27. | :14:29.
Ellis Parkinson from Youlgrave in Derbyshire is supporting his local | :14:29. | :14:38.
hospice. It was quite wonderful. Looking back on a remarkable life. | :14:39. | :14:44.
George has been a greengrocer, worked on the railways and flew 14 | :14:44. | :14:50.
wartime sorties for the RAF. Now he wants to make a difference to other | :14:50. | :14:57.
people's lives. It is difficult for my relatives. When they think, what | :14:57. | :15:03.
can we buy him? I decided that the money would more -- would do more | :15:03. | :15:07.
good at the hospice. His daughter says she is very proud. It is good | :15:07. | :15:12.
that he is giving the money to the hospice because every little helps. | :15:12. | :15:18.
It will help them. Hopefully, anybody that once had to go from | :15:18. | :15:26.
the village or any body that we know, it will help them. George has | :15:26. | :15:32.
lost two close friends recently who were cared for at hospices. This is | :15:32. | :15:37.
a cheque for my birthday. Instead of getting presents, I asked for | :15:37. | :15:43.
money. Thank you very much indeed. This will really help us care for | :15:43. | :15:49.
our patients. I think he is an absolutely fantastic man. It is so | :15:49. | :15:54.
generous and thoughtful. Donations like these from people like him, we | :15:54. | :15:59.
really need them. In fact, we rely on them. They will make a huge | :15:59. | :16:02.
difference to our patients and their families. It will allow us to | :16:02. | :16:07.
continue to provide the care that we do. George hopes that in some | :16:07. | :16:15.
small way, his contribution will help Brighton patients' lives. | :16:15. | :16:21.
What a nice man! You are watching East Midlands Today. Still to come: | :16:21. | :16:29.
all hail the humble banger, why Noddy is so laid bites of cities -- | :16:29. | :16:37.
Slade by sausages. Now sport. | :16:37. | :16:41.
England cricket star Graeme Swann is with us. Did I tell you that you | :16:41. | :16:49.
were co-presenting with me tonight? I thought I would be in the car | :16:49. | :16:53.
park! Before we get chatting, and I guess you have a lot to talk about, | :16:54. | :17:03.
:17:04. | :17:05. | ||
let's look back at a truly amazing year for Swanny. He is the best | :17:05. | :17:09.
spin bowler. He helped England to an Ashes win at the beginning of | :17:09. | :17:13.
the year and an emphatic Test series win against India. He was | :17:13. | :17:17.
ranked at the top one-day bowler in the world and was the only | :17:17. | :17:22.
Englishman named in the one-day international team of the year. He | :17:22. | :17:26.
is England's primary match-winner and the man who brought the | :17:26. | :17:29.
sprinkler dance to the cricket field. | :17:29. | :17:32.
We will chat about the sprinkler in a bit but first I know you have | :17:32. | :17:42.
strong views on corruption in cricket. Three Pakistan cricketers | :17:42. | :17:46.
in court today. What is your take on it? A it is obviously very | :17:46. | :17:50.
disappointing. For the guys who pay -- played in the Test match on the | :17:50. | :17:56.
England side, it was shopping at the time and it is shopping today. | :17:56. | :18:01.
-- shocking at the time. criticised Salman Butt. Do you | :18:01. | :18:08.
regret that now? Not really. We were very cheesed off. The | :18:08. | :18:12.
integrity of the game was tarnished. It was very disappointing at the | :18:12. | :18:16.
time and I do not think any of the England team have much sympathy for | :18:16. | :18:19.
him these days. What about the comments in the but when you were | :18:19. | :18:23.
so critical about your England colleagues? Do you regret to back? | :18:23. | :18:28.
They are your friends and to play with them every day. I was not so | :18:28. | :18:32.
critical about them. Some of the tabloid headlines made it out to be | :18:32. | :18:38.
like that. That is serialisation for you. I think it was a fairly | :18:38. | :18:43.
honest assessment. I spoke to them and it was not a character | :18:43. | :18:46.
assassination. It was just me trying to put my points a cross | :18:46. | :18:51.
from what I remember of those events. What about the way you have | :18:51. | :18:56.
had? Ashes, India, he became a dad. How are you mixing live with | :18:56. | :19:04.
cricket? -- life with a cricket? has been phenomenal, over the past | :19:04. | :19:11.
12 months. Beating India 4-0. And reintroducing myself to my son | :19:11. | :19:16.
every three or four weeks who cries every time he sees me. It takes me | :19:16. | :19:21.
a few days to win him over. We have got two months at home now so why | :19:21. | :19:26.
am looking up to -- looking forward to bonding with him. Here is some | :19:26. | :19:32.
footage of the sprinkler. Some of the England lads. Who is the best | :19:32. | :19:41.
at it? He is a born at natural. Stuart Broad was awful. There is | :19:41. | :19:51.
the best, obviously! It was good fun. My video diary there. A way of | :19:51. | :19:54.
alleviating the boardroom of being in a hotel room or winter. We are | :19:54. | :20:01.
international Pabst -- dance sensations. Are you a football fan? | :20:01. | :20:06.
I am a Newcastle fan. I like to follow their couple of the teams | :20:06. | :20:16.
:20:16. | :20:29. | ||
locally. Chesterfield. Derby County are in action tonight. They are at | :20:29. | :20:32.
home to Cardiff this evening and then play at Peterborough on | :20:32. | :20:35.
Saturday. Manager Nigel Clough is looking for a maximum points out of | :20:35. | :20:43.
the next two games. For a we want to put a similar performance in as | :20:43. | :20:47.
we have in the majority of home games. | :20:47. | :20:52.
A victory for Derby tonight could take them up to third. Last night | :20:52. | :20:54.
there were wins all round for Nottingham Forest and Leicester | :20:54. | :21:02.
City. Here is Jeremy Nicholas. they have not lost a midweek home | :21:02. | :21:10.
night fixture for 28 games. The Foxes Wedd took bids. -- work to | :21:10. | :21:19.
good. A spectacular effort. Burnley's equaliser came after an | :21:19. | :21:25.
unconvincing punch. It was headed straight back into the net. Burnley | :21:25. | :21:31.
came close a few times to taking the lead. The Foxes battled on | :21:31. | :21:35.
sharing a great team spirit and that at this header. The cross was | :21:35. | :21:41.
a beauty but it still left them with a lot to do to head it into | :21:41. | :21:47.
the goal. Leicester were awarded a penalty and Gallagher made no | :21:47. | :21:54.
mistake to settle the match. At Forest, Steve is already doing | :21:54. | :22:04.
:22:04. | :22:06. | ||
better. Steve Cotterill has scored more than Steve McClaren. This colt | :22:06. | :22:11.
was ruled out for offside. It was not quite enough from a Reading. | :22:11. | :22:15.
Both sides had their chances in a game that seemed destined to be a | :22:15. | :22:19.
draw. Reading had got lost in eight games previously. The goal finally | :22:19. | :22:29.
:22:29. | :22:37. | ||
came in the 68th 7th 67th minute. - - 67th minute. Leicester are doing | :22:37. | :22:43.
well at the moment without a manager. A Geordie connection is | :22:43. | :22:50.
Kevin Keegan. He may take over at the Foxes. I think it would be | :22:50. | :22:56.
amazing. Lee Clark is a cracking young manager. I am not sure it | :22:56. | :23:01.
would be easy to drag him a wave. There is always a place for Kevin | :23:01. | :23:09.
Keegan in football. He was there in the glory years. Let us hand back | :23:09. | :23:16.
to dominate. Brilliant! This week is pretty busy in the | :23:16. | :23:21.
seasonal calendar. Hallowe'en a couple of days ago. Guy Fawkes like | :23:21. | :23:26.
coming up. It is also a special pull something else. Not fireworks, | :23:26. | :23:29.
but a bangers. It is National Sausage Week and expert sausage | :23:29. | :23:35.
makers, they have been in Nottingham today hoping to be told | :23:35. | :23:41.
that they have the best recipe in the region. | :23:41. | :23:45.
You may be used to pork, beef or vegetable, but here there is no | :23:45. | :23:51.
such thing as the humble sausage. I am in the kitchen where master | :23:51. | :24:01.
:24:01. | :24:04. | ||
butchers are fighting it out to win the battle of the banners. When we | :24:04. | :24:09.
did our first round in September it became apparent that we had a real | :24:09. | :24:14.
step fast group of fantastic but shares in this area. Obviously the | :24:15. | :24:18.
people of Nottinghamshire at loved their sausages and they know what | :24:18. | :24:23.
makes a great sausage. Four varieties you can include... The | :24:23. | :24:31.
Henry Cooper at sausage, presumably because it packs a punch. Jake | :24:31. | :24:36.
Fleetwood has made a sweet chilli sausage. Why have you entered this | :24:36. | :24:44.
challenge? I am a chilli pepper fan but not everyone likes the heat of | :24:44. | :24:47.
a chilly so we have combined it with some sweetness. It has been a | :24:47. | :24:56.
real hit with customers. It is turning into a bit of Bass's All! - | :24:56. | :25:06.
:25:06. | :25:06. | ||
- a bit of the apes is all! Noddy Holder is beginning the taste test. | :25:06. | :25:11.
Why have you moved from head- banging to this? I am a sausage | :25:11. | :25:16.
fans. I want to promote British produce, British pig farmers and | :25:16. | :25:21.
British butchers. What has been your favourite? I cannot pick a | :25:21. | :25:26.
favourite. The quality has been so high. Today's winning the sausage | :25:26. | :25:32.
was a Lincolnshire sausage which When's this lovely black. A great | :25:32. | :25:42.
:25:42. | :25:45. | ||
record! You have nicked my sausage! I love the British Sausage | :25:45. | :25:55.

We have got some rain on the way this evening. A yellow warning | :25:58. | :26:03.
issued by the Met Office for some pretty heavy rain. It is going to | :26:03. | :26:07.
create some standing water issues on the roads because leaves are | :26:07. | :26:11.
blocking drains. That will cause quite tricky driving conditions | :26:11. | :26:19.
overnight. Strong winds are picking up. Gorgeous autumn scenes still a | :26:19. | :26:26.
cross the east Midlands. This was taken by the supermarket. It shows | :26:26. | :26:34.
you do not have to go too far to get some nice shops -- shops. This | :26:34. | :26:39.
low-pressure is moving towards us, bringing the rain and strong winds. | :26:39. | :26:43.
Some patchy outbreaks of rain this evening across the East Midlands | :26:43. | :26:49.
this evening. Very like to start with but intensifying as the main | :26:49. | :26:52.
band of rain moves in tomorrow morning. Temperature wise, quite | :26:52. | :26:58.
mild. 11 degrees minimum. Surprising for the time of year. | :26:58. | :27:03.
The rain clears early hours. Some of greatness through the morning | :27:03. | :27:07.
but further showers starting to spread through as we go into the | :27:07. | :27:14.
afternoon. Temperatures up to 17 degrees tomorrow. Overnight a | :27:14. | :27:18.
Thursday, further rain pushing in. That will clear by the early hours | :27:18. | :27:23.
of Friday morning. We are still left with a very blustery a fad for | :27:23. | :27:28.
Friday. Good news for your fireworks display on Friday night | :27:28. | :27:34. |
