This is East Midlands Today with Dominic Heale and me, Anne Davies.

:00:05.:00:15.
:00:15.:00:28.

Our top story tonight: The perils of the shisha pipe. We have great

:00:28.:00:34.

fans here at Derby County, but it did happen and we are accountable

:00:34.:00:40.

for it. That hundreds of patients with blood cancer who could benefit

:00:40.:00:47.

from trials about to take place here. Today we have been grilled by

:00:47.:00:57.
:00:57.:01:03.

these BBC newsroom reporters. Good evening. Welcome to

:01:03.:01:08.

Wednesday's programme. First tonight: It is said that using one

:01:08.:01:11.

for an hour is like smoking more than 100 cigarettes, but it seems

:01:11.:01:15.

that many people are unaware of the dangers of shisha pipes. Many

:01:15.:01:17.

councils are now considering bringing in licensing for shisha

:01:17.:01:20.

cafes, to try to deal with the growing number of back-street

:01:20.:01:30.
:01:30.:01:43.

premises. Angelina Socci reports. I am not worried, because they

:01:43.:01:48.

don't smoke a lot. A I have been smoking since it was 18 and haven't

:01:48.:01:55.

seen any harm, yet. I think everyone who smokes knows the side-

:01:55.:01:59.

effects of tobacco. And growing number of shisha bars have opened

:01:59.:02:04.

up. Now there are more than 30 in the East Midlands. This is

:02:04.:02:11.

something that health professionals are worried about. Their tobacco in

:02:12.:02:17.

healed from as she should pipe in one hour is the same two -- is the

:02:18.:02:23.

same as a hundred cigarettes. think this is a time bomb. I think

:02:23.:02:27.

you will see a lot more people with lung cancer, heart attacks at a

:02:27.:02:32.

young age to do not think there are causing any harm. It is not just

:02:32.:02:38.

people's health that is causing concern. Since the smoking ban was

:02:38.:02:43.

introduced, some premises have been operating illegally by allowing

:02:43.:02:47.

customers to operate indoors. The council says it is time for tighter

:02:47.:02:52.

regulations. One option is to look at injunctions to stop people

:02:52.:02:57.

smoking in enclosed areas. Another possibility is looking at licensing,

:02:58.:03:01.

but it is early days to see if there is any legislation that would

:03:01.:03:08.

allow that take place. These are all issues that are being discussed.

:03:08.:03:11.

While there has been a steady decline in cigarette smokers, the

:03:11.:03:16.

worry is that this could now be a new gateway for people to become

:03:16.:03:20.

addicted to tobacco. Sociologist Rania Hafez is a

:03:20.:03:23.

research fellow at the University of Derby. Earlier she told me she

:03:23.:03:33.
:03:33.:03:33.

would like to see more shisha bars. I think she Shem bars have been a

:03:33.:03:39.

great addition to our city centres. Going round their East Midlands to

:03:39.:03:44.

see a lot of segregated communities, but these shisha bars have brought

:03:44.:03:49.

people from different communities together. They can socialise in a

:03:49.:03:54.

clean, young way and I think it is a great edition. You are from the

:03:54.:04:01.

Lebanon, how important is she share smocking to your family? My mother

:04:01.:04:07.

smokes the shisha, so does my great-grandmother, my hands and 80

:04:07.:04:15.

something that really empowers women. It is unhealthy. It is the

:04:15.:04:19.

equivalent to smoking 100 cigarettes. Actually, it is not.

:04:19.:04:25.

You don't light up a shisha pipe 20 times a day. But the end of the day,

:04:25.:04:30.

if people go to her she should bar once or twice a week, may be much

:04:30.:04:35.

less, it is a lovely way to engage in something that adults enjoy. It

:04:35.:04:42.

is adults who can decide for themselves. Many things we can do

:04:42.:04:46.

in excess that are harmful to us, but we can make a decision as to

:04:46.:04:56.
:04:56.:05:00.

how much you want to engage in it and enjoy it.

:05:00.:05:03.

Next tonight, Derby County has apologised to the family of the

:05:03.:05:05.

former Nottingham Forest owner Nigel Doughty for what it describes

:05:06.:05:10.

as insensitive and distasteful chanting at last night's game. Many

:05:10.:05:13.

Derby and Forest supporters were upset by what they heard at Pride

:05:13.:05:17.

Park. Mr Doughty died last month after more than a decade at the

:05:17.:05:26.

City Ground. His own father was at the match. Mike O'Sullivan reports.

:05:26.:05:33.

It was a sell-out, 33,000 at Pride Park last night. As a Derby player

:05:33.:05:38.

lay injured, some Derby fans taunted their rivals about the

:05:38.:05:44.

former Forest owner Nigel Doughty, who died last month, chanting where

:05:44.:05:52.

has you're chairman gone? Today derby County said they had written

:05:52.:05:59.

to apologise to his father, Ted, who was at the match, and to

:05:59.:06:04.

Nottingham Forest. We regret and are embarrassed at what happened.

:06:04.:06:09.

We are accountable for that. We have great fans, but we don't want

:06:09.:06:14.

to condone anything like this. We are sorry that it happened.

:06:14.:06:24.
:06:24.:06:43.

His family must feel of love those type of comments. It must be bad

:06:43.:06:47.

enough without this kind of comments. I support Nottingham

:06:47.:06:53.

Forest, but I think that is disgusting. They shouldn't have

:06:53.:06:59.

done its. It is a bit cruel. I hope the people who had chanted that are

:06:59.:07:04.

ashamed of themselves tonight. This is football, a sport. We are

:07:04.:07:08.

talking about a man's life here. They are chanting came from that

:07:08.:07:12.

corner of the ground and Derby County are appealing for any

:07:12.:07:16.

supporters of information to contact them in confidence. At the

:07:16.:07:20.

moment the police are not involved. Still to come on the programme:

:07:20.:07:23.

Celebrating on ice - the Panthers enjoy their moment at the National

:07:33.:07:35.

Ice centre after retaining the A two-year-old boy has died after

:07:35.:07:40.

he was taken ill at home. One line of inquiry the police are

:07:40.:07:43.

investigating is the possibility he may have swallowed some methadone.

:07:43.:07:49.

Methadone is the legally prescribed substitute for heroin. A man and a

:07:49.:07:56.

woman have been arrested. From Derby, Simon Hare reports.

:07:56.:08:02.

Teddies and let the memory of a young life which ended all too soon.

:08:02.:08:08.

The two-year-old was taken ill at a flat above this former off-licence.

:08:08.:08:14.

He died in hospital shortly afterwards. A 41-year-old man and

:08:14.:08:19.

32-year-old woman had been arrested on suspicion of murder. No one from

:08:19.:08:24.

the playgroup that Reilly attended wanted to talk. Parents of other

:08:24.:08:34.
:08:34.:08:34.

children continued to least -- to leave flowers and toys at the scene.

:08:34.:08:40.

He was a happy little boy. At post mortem examination on the boy

:08:40.:08:44.

yesterday proved to be inconclusive. Detectives are waiting on the

:08:44.:08:48.

results of toxicology tests as one theory there working on is that the

:08:48.:08:55.

boy might have consumed some methadone. Whatever has happened

:08:55.:09:01.

here, a real sense of sadness at the loss of a two-year-old boy.

:09:01.:09:03.

Police are investigating an armed robbery at a Nottinghamshire

:09:03.:09:07.

supermarket. Three men entered Tesco Extra in Hucknall at around

:09:07.:09:09.

10.45pm last night and assaulted a security guard with what is

:09:09.:09:14.

believed to be a metal bar. The men then stole cash and left in a

:09:14.:09:18.

waiting car. Police are appealing for people who may have been near

:09:18.:09:21.

the store at the time to get in touch as they may hold vital

:09:21.:09:27.

information. Veterans involved in nuclear tests

:09:27.:09:33.

in the 1950's have lost their claim for compensation. Archie Ross, from

:09:33.:09:36.

Castle Gresley in South Derbyshire, is among hundreds of servicemen who

:09:36.:09:40.

witnessed the tests near Christmas Island in the South Pacific. Many

:09:40.:09:43.

claim it led to serious health problems for them and their

:09:43.:09:47.

children. Families of the veterans say they're disappointed with the

:09:47.:09:56.

ruling. Staff from across the emergency

:09:56.:10:03.

services... Staff from across the emergency services took part in a

:10:03.:10:05.

major training exercise to simulate a chemical incident in Nottingham

:10:05.:10:07.

city centre. Fire, police, ambulance and emergency planners

:10:07.:10:10.

from the city council were simulating what would happen in the

:10:10.:10:14.

event of a chemical attack at the Ice Arena. Organisers say it is one

:10:14.:10:21.

of the largest training operations they have carried out. Every 20

:10:21.:10:23.

minutes someone is diagnosed with blood cancer.

:10:23.:10:27.

As few as half of the adult patients who have it will survive,

:10:27.:10:30.

so clinical trials of new ways to fight the cancer are vital.

:10:30.:10:32.

Nottingham City Hospital treats hundreds of people with blood

:10:32.:10:35.

cancers each year and it has just linked up with centres across the

:10:35.:10:38.

country. It's expected that the new network will speed up research, and

:10:38.:10:41.

today it won the backing of former England and Forest player Geoff

:10:41.:10:49.

Thomas. Jo Healey reports. two years ago James was diagnosed

:10:49.:10:55.

with acute myeloid leukaemia. He was 21. He had a stem cell

:10:55.:10:59.

transplant last year. If people don't take part in these drug

:10:59.:11:04.

trials, how do you find out which struck his best? I suppose it is

:11:04.:11:10.

helping others. Does it help you? believe so. I was treated with

:11:10.:11:17.

trial -- with trial drugs, and I'm still here! Three new clinical

:11:17.:11:22.

trials are about to start up. The Nottingham unit has now linked up

:11:22.:11:27.

with 13 centres across the UK, which means that this will speed up

:11:27.:11:32.

the process between research in research and medicine for patients.

:11:32.:11:37.

Former England player Geoff Thomas is also a former blood cancer

:11:37.:11:44.

patient. He backs up the leukaemia charity that is set up this new

:11:44.:11:48.

infrastructure for trials. It is important. I have known people who

:11:48.:11:53.

have gone on a clinical trial when they have only got a few months to

:11:53.:11:59.

live. People have had such good responses to those trials that

:11:59.:12:06.

there are still here today. This unit is one of the biggest centres,

:12:06.:12:12.

where the sea up to 400 new patients seats year. I think this

:12:12.:12:17.

is crucially important. We know that the outcome for patients with

:12:17.:12:21.

blood cancers has improved, but we need to evaluate new drugs quickly

:12:21.:12:27.

so we can bring them forward to the clinics. James has reached those

:12:27.:12:31.

benefits. He is now in remission and looking forward to a healthy

:12:31.:12:36.

future. The number of people without a job

:12:36.:12:38.

in the East Midlands continues to rise. New quarterly labour market

:12:38.:12:41.

figures show the jobless total for the region stands at 187,000. That

:12:41.:12:44.

is an increase of 5,000 in the three months from November to

:12:44.:12:47.

January. The unemployment rate is 8.2% which is just below the

:12:47.:12:49.

national average. Our reporter Helen Astle's been talking to

:12:49.:12:52.

people in Leicestershire desperate to find a job and those fortunate

:12:52.:13:02.
:13:02.:13:06.

enough to have an apprenticeship. These two men are not just building

:13:06.:13:14.

walls, they are building a future. They are being paid to be trained

:13:14.:13:17.

to act as social and a Prius Green -- Social Enterprise scheme in

:13:17.:13:22.

Leicester. I am happy to be here because before I came I was doing

:13:22.:13:27.

nothing, bored, living off my mum. We didn't have any money. Coming

:13:27.:13:31.

here meant something because I was earning a good look after myself

:13:31.:13:37.

and do things that I wanted to do without relying on my mum. Jade is

:13:37.:13:42.

a trainee hairdresser. She has an apprenticeship. Most of them went

:13:42.:13:49.

to college straight after school, and I didn't. Now they have

:13:49.:13:54.

finished college and can get a job. I as unemployment rises, there is

:13:54.:13:59.

concern for young people you're not in education or training. A my

:13:59.:14:03.

concern for them is that they will not be able to get the job.

:14:03.:14:08.

Colleges are limited in their vacancies, so that they haven't

:14:08.:14:12.

achieved what they should in school, the colleges will not be able to

:14:12.:14:18.

take them. The future for them is that we won't break the cycle of

:14:18.:14:24.

unemployment. Phil is completing a computer course. He is desperate to

:14:24.:14:29.

find a job. No matter what you apply poor or word you go, it is

:14:29.:14:34.

impossible. Rid should is a qualified electrician who has been

:14:34.:14:39.

out of work since November despite applying for many jobs. You just

:14:39.:14:47.

can't do think, why me? We live get any better? Richard has got a job

:14:47.:14:52.

interview tomorrow and it could mean one less person unemployed and

:14:52.:14:58.

for Richard the start of a new life. Still to come on the programme:

:14:58.:15:01.

Strictly journalism - dance stars Anton Du Beke and Erin Boag get a

:15:01.:15:11.
:15:11.:15:12.

grilling at the hands of some young, but keen, reporters.

:15:12.:15:16.

After a week of dry but cloudy weather, we finally had some rain

:15:16.:15:21.

on the way. I will be packed with the forecast at the end of the

:15:22.:15:31.
:15:32.:15:38.

programme. Well, as we said earlier, it is No

:15:38.:15:41.

Smoking Day today and a family in Derbyshire has plenty to celebrate.

:15:41.:15:44.

Three generations have managed to give up cigarettes and tobacco, all

:15:44.:15:47.

at the same time, and there is a special reason why. Becky Sheeran

:15:47.:15:49.

reports. This is a family their shares more

:15:49.:15:51.

than just jeans. They are sharing will power. Three generations have

:15:51.:15:55.

stopped smoking at the same time, but it has not been easy. At first

:15:55.:15:59.

I thought it would be quite impossible. The first two weeks

:15:59.:16:05.

were pretty hard, but it gets easier. I still have the odd day

:16:05.:16:09.

when I think about them, but I have a spray of my missed and it goes

:16:09.:16:16.

away. What made them go up? Another generation is under way. She is

:16:16.:16:21.

living with me and my husband and she will be coming back to our

:16:21.:16:27.

house and I don't want a baby coming into a smoky environment.

:16:27.:16:32.

with support from a local NHS service, instead of reaching for

:16:32.:16:36.

cigarettes they are keeping themselves busy. It is a brilliant,

:16:36.:16:40.

brilliant story and it is good that people can stop us a family because

:16:40.:16:43.

they get to be able to support each other and they don't have the

:16:43.:16:47.

problems of somebody else smoking around them. This is unusual

:16:47.:16:54.

because we have so many unusual -- so many generations of the family

:16:54.:16:58.

stopping together. The family hope that this will inspire people to

:16:58.:17:03.

stop. I would advise them to stop smoking, because the baby doesn't

:17:03.:17:07.

have the choice in a matter if you're smoking are not, so you are

:17:07.:17:12.

harming the baby. This way if you stop smoking, he does not have to

:17:12.:17:17.

take that tower into his body. isn't easy, but you have got to use

:17:17.:17:24.

you will power, and if you want to quit, you will.

:17:24.:17:27.

It was the big derby last night of course with the Rams against Forest

:17:27.:17:31.

and, as ever, there was plenty of drama. There were of course the

:17:31.:17:34.

crowd chants which we covered earlier in the programme. Then

:17:34.:17:38.

there was a nasty injury to Derby's captain. As for the result, well,

:17:38.:17:47.

the Rams did their first double over Forest in 40 years. It is a

:17:47.:17:54.

match that is always about far more than just three points. The come on

:17:54.:17:58.

Derby! The come on Nottingham Forest! It is all about the

:17:58.:18:03.

bragging rights. This is the one we want to win. I think you will do it

:18:03.:18:07.

tonight. It would mean to world, really. Nothing better than beating

:18:08.:18:15.

them. It would mean an awful lot. The players know all too well what

:18:15.:18:19.

it means to their fans, but well the first half was hard fought,

:18:19.:18:23.

chances were limited. Things barking delight in the second, but

:18:23.:18:29.

then Derby suffered a real blow. Derby's captain delighted with his

:18:29.:18:34.

keeper. The club has said that his knee injury will be out for the

:18:34.:18:43.

rest of the season. We will have to get on with it without him, but it

:18:43.:18:50.

will be a great mess. A real spell of pressure was to follow from it

:18:50.:18:55.

the Rams as they went in desperate search of a breakthrough. There was

:18:55.:18:59.

just a minute left of normal time when Nottingham Forest found

:18:59.:19:05.

themselves down to 10 men. Into injury time and for drama was to

:19:05.:19:11.

come. Jonathan Greening was adjudged to have gone into high.

:19:11.:19:18.

Jake Buxton grabbed a late, late winner. Disappointment and heard

:19:18.:19:21.

for everybody connected to Nottingham Forest tonight. The

:19:21.:19:27.

players had given them all. I disagree with the free kick. We are

:19:27.:19:31.

disappointed with that, but not with the effort we put in.

:19:31.:19:36.

thought we put them under pressure all through the game. They defended

:19:36.:19:42.

extremely well. We don't score too many late goals, so hopefully that

:19:42.:19:46.

will be the first of a few more to come.

:19:46.:19:50.

The plot thickens at Leicester. So says manager Nigel Pearson anyway.

:19:50.:19:54.

Just when some were ruling City out of a play-off spot, they go and

:19:54.:20:00.

beat Birmingham 3-1. Mark Shardlow has more.

:20:00.:20:05.

When the referee awarded Birmingham an ordinary -- award gives them an

:20:06.:20:13.

early penalty, it seemed like a harsh decision. Birmingham might

:20:13.:20:19.

easily have finished the game off shortly afterwards. A shot hit the

:20:19.:20:23.

bar. Leicester were fortunate. Leicester dusted themselves down

:20:23.:20:31.

and got back into the game. It was level at half-time. Leicester were

:20:31.:20:37.

the better side, yet time seemed to be slipping away when a lovely ball

:20:37.:20:41.

gave them a chance. The young striker kept his head and with 10

:20:41.:20:46.

minutes to go Leicester were at last in the lead. Jermaine Beckford

:20:46.:20:50.

found himself in a similar position in injury time and again he

:20:50.:20:54.

completed the move to score his second of the night and Leicester's

:20:54.:20:58.

third. They moved to 11th in the table and they're still in with a

:20:58.:21:02.

fighting chance. In the Conference, Mansfield Town's

:21:02.:21:05.

charge towards a promotion place continued with an injury time

:21:05.:21:07.

equaliser against league leaders Fleetwood. They are now unbeaten in

:21:07.:21:15.

six games. Some news from League One - Notts

:21:15.:21:18.

County have signed the Leeds United winger Lloyd Sam. He will stay on

:21:18.:21:23.

loan until the end of the season. There were celebrations last night

:21:23.:21:25.

at the National Ice Centre as the Nottingham Panthers retained the

:21:26.:21:29.

Challenge Cup. They beat league leaders Belfast Giants 5-3 on the

:21:29.:21:39.
:21:39.:21:40.

night, 10-4 on aggregate. It is a trophy that Panthers and

:21:40.:21:46.

their fans love. This was their third successive title, they're fit

:21:46.:21:52.

in nine years. This was the most emphatic win. Thrilled. So much

:21:52.:22:02.

excitement here. We did smash them pretty good. It means history. The

:22:02.:22:11.

Watford team has done this before. They had a four-goal advantage from

:22:11.:22:18.

the first leg. They soon put the game out of reach. The win was

:22:18.:22:23.

comfortable and sweet. The Panthers now have their sights set on a

:22:23.:22:27.

double. Finally from me tonight, a quick

:22:27.:22:30.

line on rugby. The Leicester Tigers legend Dean Richards will soon be

:22:30.:22:33.

back in the front line. He is taking over as head coach at

:22:33.:22:36.

Newcastle in the summer. Richards was banned for three years after

:22:36.:22:46.
:22:46.:22:48.

being implicated in a fake blood injury during a European Cup match.

:22:48.:22:51.

Tomorrow is BBC School Report Day, when classrooms around the country

:22:51.:22:55.

become newsrooms. For weeks now schools across our region have been

:22:55.:22:59.

busy preparing for the big day. Students in Ashbourne decided they

:22:59.:23:02.

wanted a big name interview for their bulletin, and not just one

:23:02.:23:06.

big name either. No, they managed to bag two of the biggest stars

:23:06.:23:09.

from Strictly Come Dancing. So, how did they get on interviewing Anton

:23:09.:23:19.
:23:19.:23:23.

du Beke and Erin Boag? Let's find out. Here's their report.

:23:23.:23:32.

Please welcome the stars of her show, Anton Du Beke and Erin Boag.

:23:32.:23:37.

They have now brought their own show to Derby. What do you ask have

:23:37.:23:43.

such big stars? We started by doing her research. It will be quite

:23:43.:23:48.

difficult because we can't make a mistake. If something goes wrong,

:23:48.:23:52.

we can just say can you come back later because they have issued to

:23:52.:24:01.

do. We have got to get it right first time. I am again and we are

:24:01.:24:06.

all here to interview Anton Du Beke and Erin Boag from Strictly Come

:24:06.:24:15.

Dancing. Do you still enjoy dancing or is it just a job? It is not just

:24:15.:24:19.

the job. We love what we do and we are very lucky to be able to do

:24:19.:24:25.

something that we love as a living. Somebody once said if you can two-

:24:25.:24:29.

year hobby as a job that is the perfect situation. Are the judges

:24:30.:24:36.

the same off-camera as they are on show? We never know, we don't meet

:24:36.:24:46.

them. Good judges are all really nice people. I know sometimes it is

:24:46.:24:56.
:24:56.:24:58.

hard to believe, but they all are, really. It was really exciting.

:24:58.:25:01.

They were really nice. Anton Du Beke was funny and Duke around a

:25:01.:25:07.

lot. You get to introduce celebrities, not just people on the

:25:07.:25:13.

street, but I might go for it as a job. That was Anton Du Beke and

:25:13.:25:17.

Erin Boag in Derby. It was a fantastic opportunity and really

:25:17.:25:21.

enjoyed meeting them. Good luck to all the students

:25:21.:25:24.

taking part in the news day. We will, of course, have more reports

:25:24.:25:28.

on tomorrows programme. Time for the weather now and Sara's been

:25:28.:25:31.

taking the air this evening on the banks of the river Trent in

:25:31.:25:41.
:25:41.:25:46.

It is just starting to turn a little bit chilly here now. I must

:25:46.:25:51.

say a quick a load of the kids at the Malcolm Sargent primary-school

:25:51.:25:56.

who were also having a go at the weather with me the other day. We

:25:56.:26:02.

all had a good time. It will be called tonight as the skies will be

:26:02.:26:09.

relatively clear in the region. Whether Clyde has broken it will be

:26:09.:26:14.

misty tonight. The night-time temperature will be a minimum of

:26:14.:26:17.

four degree Celsius. There is the chance of a slight air frost for

:26:17.:26:22.

the early part of this evening. The cloud will increase from the north.

:26:22.:26:26.

Tomorrow morning will start off quite cloudy and misty with a lot

:26:26.:26:30.

of low cloud around, and it will be thick enough at times to produce

:26:30.:26:36.

some drizzle. Will gradually start to cure away towards the coast. We

:26:36.:26:41.

will get to see the cloud thinning and breaking at times. Again, I

:26:41.:26:49.

could be a bit hit and miss, but riven -- but we will get to see a

:26:49.:26:56.

few sunny spells around. We also have a dry day in store for Friday.

:26:57.:27:00.

There might be more of a breeze picking up on Friday coming for him

:27:00.:27:05.

from the south-west, so there could be more chances to see a break in

:27:05.:27:08.

the cloud. From Friday night into Saturday the cloud will really

:27:08.:27:12.

start to increase again Anne's the weather will change for Saturday

:27:12.:27:19.

and Sunday. It will keep things quite wet on Saturday, and probably

:27:19.:27:24.

overnight and into Sunday as well. It could produce up to four

:27:24.:27:29.

centimetres of rain during the day on Saturday and the first part of

:27:29.:27:33.
