Here in the East Midlands: Tonight ` a pensioner dies from a heart attack | :00:14. | :00:18.
after paramedics lose the keys to their ambulance. It's one of several | :00:19. | :00:21.
serious cases, forcing EMAS to tackle poor performance. | :00:22. | :00:29.
Also tonight: after four deaths, fire teams visit hundreds of homes | :00:30. | :00:34.
to check smoke detectors. Test it now. Check them. And no snow yet, | :00:35. | :00:46.
but more Santas... This is East Midlands Today. | :00:47. | :01:00.
Tonight, we can reveal a raft of schools in | :01:01. | :01:07.
Welcome to Friday's programme. First tonight ` it's been revealed that a | :01:08. | :01:11.
pensioner died from a heart attack after paramedics lost the keys to | :01:12. | :01:14.
their ambulance. The incident happened at a golf club in | :01:15. | :01:17.
Derbyshire. Seven other serious incidents involving East Midlands | :01:18. | :01:19.
Ambulance Service were logged in just one month. The information came | :01:20. | :01:23.
to light after NHS bosses held an emergency meeting with EMAS over | :01:24. | :01:26.
poor performance and concerns about patient safety. It has been a year | :01:27. | :01:39.
of controversy. Another hefty fine. Paramedics made mistakes. And now | :01:40. | :01:49.
and don't bosses have been summoned to a summit. The emergency meeting | :01:50. | :01:57.
was called over concerns about the response times to emergency calls. | :01:58. | :02:08.
One of those listed in this report happened at the golf per billion in | :02:09. | :02:16.
Derbyshire. `` pavillion. A man had a cardiac arrest but the paramedics | :02:17. | :02:24.
had lost the keys to the Ann Jones. The patient received support but he | :02:25. | :02:25.
later died. The `` ambulance. Heck I am deeply concerned. The | :02:26. | :03:02.
people of the East Midlands would expect the Ambulance Service to put | :03:03. | :03:06.
in place quickly the changes and reforms that they need to. It needs | :03:07. | :03:15.
to be the top of the other gender. `` their agenda. | :03:16. | :03:24.
And it's been a momentous week for the NHS ` still learning the lessons | :03:25. | :03:28.
of the scandal of Stafford Hospital where hundreds of patients died | :03:29. | :03:30.
following appalling treatment. The government has finally set out what | :03:31. | :03:34.
it thinks is needed. It calls for a radical culture change ` more | :03:35. | :03:36.
openness and, yes, more restructuring of some services. Our | :03:37. | :03:39.
correspondent looks at where things go from here, to improve care for | :03:40. | :03:45.
all of us. Think about the sheer scale of the NHS. In England the | :03:46. | :03:50.
budget is over ?100 billion a year. One million patients are seen every | :03:51. | :03:57.
36 hours. 146,000 doctors. It's a world of competing priorities. | :03:58. | :04:02.
Today, a Nottingham charity backed demands for improving care for | :04:03. | :04:08.
patients with brain injuries. The budget can only be spent once. | :04:09. | :04:11.
Shoppers have kind words for the NHS, but access to GPs was a common | :04:12. | :04:23.
gripe. It took me ten days. I contacted my GP and they said it | :04:24. | :04:33.
would take till the 31st of January. My feet are sore. My daughter was | :04:34. | :04:50.
born 16 days ago. Helpful staff. It was a good experience. There is a | :04:51. | :04:58.
nursing shortage. The government says that staffing levels should be | :04:59. | :05:05.
displayed on wards. In Lincolnshire, the health and social | :05:06. | :05:10.
care system has been failing, with hospitals in special measures over | :05:11. | :05:12.
spending and recruitment problems arising. We want to keep people out | :05:13. | :05:21.
of hospital. We want to deliver better quality. It is not just about | :05:22. | :05:27.
what happens in hospital. It is about what happens to people before | :05:28. | :05:30.
they go to hospital and when they come out again as well. That is what | :05:31. | :05:38.
they are trying to fix. Two of the big challenges are ensuring enough | :05:39. | :05:41.
capacity and keeping up the quality. The boss at Derby hospital works as | :05:42. | :05:46.
a care assistant once a month. He won an award this week for | :05:47. | :06:00.
compassionate cure. `` She. `` care. RE delivering adequate service? That | :06:01. | :06:07.
is the question. Changing culture is not very easy. Many hospitals fear a | :06:08. | :06:23.
difficult winter. More money may have to be diverted to them if the | :06:24. | :06:31.
pressure keeps building. The funeral has taken place of a | :06:32. | :06:34.
four`year`old girl from Leicestershire who was mauled to | :06:35. | :06:37.
death by her family's dog. Lexi Brandon was killed by the pet at her | :06:38. | :06:41.
home in Mountsorrel earlier this month. The service was helf at Holy | :06:42. | :06:44.
Trinity Church at Barrow on Soar where the family is originally from. | :06:45. | :06:48.
Mourners were asked to wear pink, which was Lexi's favourite colour. | :06:49. | :06:56.
Still lots to come tonight ` including a look ahead to the | :06:57. | :06:59.
weekend's weather. And in sport, we've got a knockout preview ahead | :07:00. | :07:01.
of fight night! The government has confirmed it | :07:02. | :07:16.
wants a new Trust to run the troubled Derby free school, | :07:17. | :07:18.
Ad`Madinah. Education Minister Lord Nash has told the school he's not | :07:19. | :07:21.
satisfied the current Trust can make the necessary improvements. Last | :07:22. | :07:24.
night Al`Madinah told parents its governors would not resign ` but | :07:25. | :07:27.
today's letter says the Trustees have agreed to stand down in due | :07:28. | :07:31.
course. Lord Nash wants the school to work with the Greenwood Dale | :07:32. | :07:33.
Foundation Trust ` which already runs 22 other academies. There are a | :07:34. | :07:43.
group of pupils there who deserve a good education ` irrespective of the | :07:44. | :07:46.
nature of the school... Whether it's a faith school or not. These | :07:47. | :07:49.
children need a good education. That's something my Trust provides. | :07:50. | :07:52.
We provide it really well. That's all I'm in this for. I believe quite | :07:53. | :08:00.
fully, and I suspect Lord Nash does as well, that if we didn't take it | :08:01. | :08:11.
on then nobody else would. And staying with education, tonight | :08:12. | :08:15.
we can report that more than half a dozen secondary schools and | :08:16. | :08:18.
academies are in the spotlight at Ofsted sends inspectors into our of | :08:19. | :08:21.
our cities, which it says lets it pupils down. Our political editor | :08:22. | :08:25.
iis outside one of the schools in Nottingham we know has been visited. | :08:26. | :08:28.
I'm outside the Djanogly Academy in Hyson Green in Nottingham. This was | :08:29. | :08:33.
one of the country's first ever city academies during the Blair years. | :08:34. | :08:39.
But tonight it's been revealed that last week it was one of a number of | :08:40. | :08:43.
schools in Nottingham targetted by Ofsted inspectors, in what's been | :08:44. | :08:46.
described to us by an academic source as a blitz. I understand that | :08:47. | :08:53.
Djanogly is one of possibly as many as ten secondary schools in this | :08:54. | :09:01.
city that were inspected. In fact, tonight Ofsted have told us that | :09:02. | :09:04.
they carried out a week of coordinated inspections in | :09:05. | :09:07.
Nottingham to find out why some of the secondary outcomes are so poor | :09:08. | :09:10.
compared to the East Midlands region and nationally. | :09:11. | :09:15.
the secondary outcomes are so poor compared to This will really concern | :09:16. | :09:18.
parents, pupils and local politicians? It will. Remember, | :09:19. | :09:26.
Nottingham had a lamitable record for education attainment. In recent | :09:27. | :09:30.
years, the Labour leadership here has embraced the academy programme | :09:31. | :09:50.
and there were signs of improvement. Finally, what have the City Council | :09:51. | :09:54.
said about all this? They have confirmed that the inspections took | :09:55. | :09:56.
place. They haven't confirmed where but they say that they are working | :09:57. | :10:00.
with the schools and academies to help them to develop any improvement | :10:01. | :10:04.
plans that might be needed in light of these inspections. The results | :10:05. | :10:10.
should be published by Ofsted in the next few weeks. | :10:11. | :10:25.
A prospective parliamentary candidate has apologised for | :10:26. | :10:27.
offensive and threatening comments he made on social media about a | :10:28. | :10:31.
15`year`old boy. Joe Naitta is due to stand for the Liberal Democrats | :10:32. | :10:34.
in the Derby South constituency in the 2015 general election. He says, | :10:35. | :10:38.
when he made the comments he was speaking as a parent rather than a | :10:39. | :10:41.
city councillor. Our reporter is in our Derby studio and has seen the | :10:42. | :10:50.
comments. What do they say? This all goes back to an incident earlier | :10:51. | :10:56.
this week at Derby bus station. Joe Naitta says his daughter was | :10:57. | :11:02.
verbally abused and spat at. Joe Naitta then went on to Facebook and | :11:03. | :11:08.
threatened him. He said he was going to go round to his house. They were | :11:09. | :11:13.
littered with swear words. He said the boy had picked on the wrong bro | :11:14. | :11:25.
and told him not to mess with him. What has he had to say since this | :11:26. | :11:35.
solar merged? `` all emerged? He has apologised and said they were said | :11:36. | :11:39.
in the heat of the moment. He said he as a football coach and it is | :11:40. | :11:47.
similar to street talk. I wanted to put the word out that this incident | :11:48. | :11:54.
took place. I wanted to find out more information about what | :11:55. | :12:00.
happened. Joe Naitta represents eight want in Derby. `` a ward. I | :12:01. | :12:11.
ascertain if he was considering his position but he said absolutely not. | :12:12. | :12:23.
After a fire that killed four people earlier this week, we're being | :12:24. | :12:28.
encouraged to have an escape plan for our homes. That's the advice | :12:29. | :12:31.
from safety officers visiting homes in Derbyshire. They want us to make | :12:32. | :12:35.
a plan, discuss it with each other and even practice it. They also want | :12:36. | :12:39.
us to check we have working smoke detectors. The fire that claimed | :12:40. | :12:42.
four lives earlier this week will be difficult to move on from for this | :12:43. | :12:45.
tight`knit community. But the Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service | :12:46. | :12:48.
are trying to ensure it doesn't happen again. Since the fire, the | :12:49. | :12:55.
service has sent safety officers like Kate to hundreds of homes in | :12:56. | :12:58.
the area to check they're well`equipped in case of a fire. | :12:59. | :13:03.
When a fire happens in somebody's local area, it brings it home that | :13:04. | :13:06.
fires can happen in the safest of homes. They realise they need | :13:07. | :13:14.
protection, so we take the opportunity to come out and reassure | :13:15. | :13:22.
people. I only had one smoke alarm at the top of the stairs. I thought | :13:23. | :13:26.
it would be safe with just the one. Now there are two fitted. I feel | :13:27. | :13:30.
more secure. You have to get into the habit of testing them. Over 80% | :13:31. | :13:36.
of households in the country own a smoke alarm. But the Fire Service | :13:37. | :13:41.
says that unless you check it's working, it's just a lump of plastic | :13:42. | :13:45.
on the ceiling. I recommend that people test their alarms. Check it | :13:46. | :13:54.
after this programme. Check you have a working one on each level of the | :13:55. | :13:59.
house. Sit down as a family and create a plan. The Fire Service | :14:00. | :14:15.
hopes their advice will be heeded. People living in a historic village | :14:16. | :14:19.
mentioned in the Domesday Book are campaigning to move the route of HS2 | :14:20. | :14:22.
further away from their homes. They claim the line will blight their | :14:23. | :14:25.
properties and a businessman says a ?1 million office building will have | :14:26. | :14:29.
to be demolished. High speed rail officials say no final decisions | :14:30. | :14:34.
have been made. This couple say their lives have been blighted by | :14:35. | :14:39.
the plans for High Speed Rail. The line is due to pass within 100 | :14:40. | :14:43.
metres of their home, which is also a bed breakfast business. It will | :14:44. | :14:47.
be in the field next door. They had planned to sell up and retire to a | :14:48. | :14:51.
part of the building that's been newly renovated at a cost of around | :14:52. | :14:58.
?100,000. We're not sure where the line's going to be. There's been no | :14:59. | :15:04.
sign of compensation. It has blighted us. The Walkers want HS2 to | :15:05. | :15:08.
move the line to the other side of the M1, or to use the exisiting line | :15:09. | :15:12.
` across the countryside and about a mile away. The village of Strelley | :15:13. | :15:16.
is mentioned in the Domesday Book. Strelley Hall ` now a business | :15:17. | :15:25.
centre ` dates back to the 1200s. The owner has invested nearly ?1 | :15:26. | :15:28.
million in this office building on the grounds. HS2 means it will have | :15:29. | :15:34.
to be demolished. He also wants the line to move further away from | :15:35. | :15:38.
Strelley. The other one would be a much better route. It's more than a | :15:39. | :15:41.
mile away from here. There's been a railway line there for over 150 | :15:42. | :15:48.
years. It's almost all open country. HS2 says it's already rejected the | :15:49. | :15:51.
idea of keeping the line away from this historic village. It says the | :15:52. | :15:55.
other line has old mining problems and more people live along that | :15:56. | :15:59.
route. But it says nothing yet had been finally decided. HS2 says it | :16:00. | :16:03.
wants to hear the views of the public, throughout a consulation | :16:04. | :16:13.
period that ends in January. Still to come tonight: Anna's here | :16:14. | :16:20.
with the weekend weather. And I must have been a good girl... Because | :16:21. | :16:22.
I've got 116 Santas! I bet they're noisy! It's a noisy | :16:23. | :16:51.
sport tonight, too! Fight night is nearly here, as | :16:52. | :16:54.
Nottingham's Carl Froch takes on cocky Londoner George Groves | :16:55. | :16:56.
tomorrow night at the Manchester Arena. On the eve of this fight, | :16:57. | :17:07.
everybody is here... And you only have to look at this pair once to | :17:08. | :17:11.
see that they really don't like each other! | :17:12. | :17:21.
I'm sharp. I'm fit. I'm fast. I'm healthy. He's had a lot to say. | :17:22. | :17:31.
We've all heard it. It's been quite embarrassing. I think he believes | :17:32. | :17:36.
I'm going to get in there and run. But Carl, you're wrong. I'm going to | :17:37. | :17:41.
meet him. Ridiculous. Pathetic. What's pathetic? You are. He's | :17:42. | :17:47.
fighting for himself. And he's losing. Saturday is going to be very | :17:48. | :17:53.
pleasurable. Not just for me, but for the fans and the viewing public. | :17:54. | :17:57.
This is where I belong. I'm going to be World Champion. You're getting | :17:58. | :18:08.
annhilated. Everybody knows it. You're getting absolutely flattened. | :18:09. | :18:11.
I can't wait. Look at the crowd. There must be | :18:12. | :18:24.
over 1,000 here for the weigh`in. Sparks were flying yet again between | :18:25. | :18:36.
the two. One man who has covered Carl Froch's career for well over a | :18:37. | :18:39.
decade is this guy. He's been catching up with him. This is | :18:40. | :18:44.
brilliant. Much better than years ago, when I used to weigh`in in | :18:45. | :18:47.
front of about ten people! This is all part of it. The verbals. It's | :18:48. | :18:55.
the first time I've talked to him without a microphone attached. So | :18:56. | :18:59.
every time I've talked to that idiot, they've known what I've said. | :19:00. | :19:03.
I'll watch my words... But I told him what I really think of him. I'm | :19:04. | :19:12.
going to flatten him. A lot worse than that if the referee gives me | :19:13. | :19:19.
the chance. You're very confident? Is that a trick question? You know I | :19:20. | :19:29.
am. I'll do the business. Carl is a huge Nottingham Forest fan and it's | :19:30. | :19:36.
a big weekend for them. They take on top of the table Burnley. Derby | :19:37. | :19:46.
County travel to Bournemouth, and the big talking point there this | :19:47. | :19:50.
week is whether starlet Will Hughes is staying put. Eventually he'll go | :19:51. | :19:54.
to a top club. No doubt. He's got the talent. But he still has a lot | :19:55. | :20:01.
to learn. We want him to do that here. The Foxes are still smarting | :20:02. | :20:07.
after their defeat by Forest, but they say they were simply unlucky. | :20:08. | :20:13.
We've played worse and won. I can think of certain games. That's the | :20:14. | :20:20.
nature of this division. We'll keep things in perspective. We've had a | :20:21. | :20:27.
decent start. The players are in a positive frame of mind. Up against | :20:28. | :20:32.
the league leaders, a Forest side depleted by injuries. It's a massive | :20:33. | :20:35.
weekend for The Reds, but they're still ready to wish one of their | :20:36. | :20:39.
biggest fans all the best! COME ON CARL! You've got the support of | :20:40. | :20:46.
everybody at Forrest. `` Forest. We wish you the best. Hopefully we'll | :20:47. | :20:49.
be celebrating alongwith you. Go and do it! One man who knows Carl Froch | :20:50. | :20:59.
very well is heavyweight legend David Haye. Is this hatred genuine? | :21:00. | :21:12.
They dislike each other. They've been digging at each other for a | :21:13. | :21:17.
while. Now they have a fight, the world can see. It's a genuine grudge | :21:18. | :21:26.
match. Carl is Britain's best at the moment. George Groves hasn't lost a | :21:27. | :21:30.
professional fight. What can we expect? Fireworks. These guys have | :21:31. | :21:37.
the ability to beat each other. Carl is one of our best exports. He's | :21:38. | :21:43.
gone to other people's back yards and fought the best. George hasn't | :21:44. | :21:49.
yet but this is his opportunity. He believes he's better than Carl. He | :21:50. | :21:54.
wants to prove it. That's why it's so interesting. Thanks. You've seen | :21:55. | :22:04.
lots of fights. What about that reception. It's an all`British fight | :22:05. | :22:09.
but we know who they're supporting? Definitely. We know. There's only | :22:10. | :22:14.
one person to support! Fantastic. He's a massive superstar. Brilliant | :22:15. | :22:22.
ambassador for the sport. He's going to smash Groves to bits. It's | :22:23. | :22:36.
brilliant. Groves is in deep water. He can look at the belts but he | :22:37. | :22:41.
isn't getting his hands on them. Carl and his wife Rachel can't wait. | :22:42. | :22:49.
Just time for me to wish the Leicester Tigers good luck against | :22:50. | :22:52.
London Irish tomorrow. All the best to the Nottingham Panthers as well, | :22:53. | :22:58.
who have a European adventure. But it's going to be huge here in | :22:59. | :23:04.
Manchester tomorrow. Tickets sold out in 11 minutes. 17,000 fans will | :23:05. | :23:12.
be there as Carl Froch puts his two world titles on the line. Exciting! | :23:13. | :23:26.
And finally ` golfers have traditionally been known for their | :23:27. | :23:29.
rather colourful clothing... But how about this? 116 of them turned up in | :23:30. | :23:34.
Leicestershire today, all wearing identical red outfits. Why? Well, | :23:35. | :23:38.
Carolyn Moses caught up with them ` getting into their seasonal swing! I | :23:39. | :23:45.
don't know about you, but it always gets pretty busy for me around | :23:46. | :23:48.
Christmas. I thought I'd have a day off at the golf course. A bit of | :23:49. | :23:52.
rest and relaxation. Hopefully I've got the green to myself. Did I miss | :23:53. | :23:57.
something? No, there wasn't just one... But more than 100 Santas | :23:58. | :24:00.
today, preparing to get their own swing in. What do you call a whole | :24:01. | :24:08.
load of Santas? A SLEIGHFUL! They're ho`ho`hoping to do some good! In | :24:09. | :24:14.
fact, this sleighful was ready to get playful ` raising cash for the | :24:15. | :24:19.
Rainbows Children's Hospice. Organisers were thrilled that so | :24:20. | :24:21.
many Santas swopped pressies for putting. It originates from Santa | :24:22. | :24:27.
fun runs. People raise a lot of money for charity and it is a great | :24:28. | :24:31.
day to do it. 116 people all dressed up as Santa, attempting to play | :24:32. | :24:34.
golf. DRIVING HOME FOR CHRISTMAS PLAYS. | :24:35. | :24:52.
And who do we have here? It's snooker legend Willie Thorne! Why | :24:53. | :24:58.
are you here today? It is great to be here. I've been a patron of the | :24:59. | :25:02.
charity for seven years. We've got 116 people dressed as Santa. And | :25:03. | :25:06.
this time I'm going to try to get the white ball in the hole... Unlike | :25:07. | :25:07.
snooker! It should be good fun. Thousands of pounds have been raised | :25:08. | :25:20.
by this pre`festive fun. Afterwards, it was time for the good rest. They | :25:21. | :25:32.
have another big day next month. Merry Christmas! Slightly surreal... | :25:33. | :25:46.
