Tonight - suicide or murder? for news where you are.

:00:00.:00:07.

A Government minister demands answers over the death in Italy

:00:08.:00:11.

The Italian authorities believe Claire Marten's fatal knife wounds

:00:12.:00:26.

were self-inflicted. To close the case and say it was suicide is

:00:27.:00:30.

clearly not true and so we have to do all in our power to challenge

:00:31.:00:37.

that verdict. Also, the heart disease test that could mean

:00:38.:00:39.

patients are having operations they don't need. Plus, how to teachers

:00:40.:00:47.

recreated a safeguarding document days after the death of a

:00:48.:00:52.

seven-year-old pupil. And meet at the clock tower for

:00:53.:00:58.

Claudio, Foxes fans paying tribute to their sacked manager.

:00:59.:01:05.

Good evening and welcome to Monday's programme

:01:06.:01:06.

with Anne Davies and me, Dominic Heale.

:01:07.:01:10.

First tonight, a Government minister is insisting that the police

:01:11.:01:14.

in Italy reopen their investigation into the death of a woman

:01:15.:01:17.

Claire Martin died from multiple stab wounds five years ago.

:01:18.:01:23.

The Italian authorities ruled she'd probably taken her own life.

:01:24.:01:27.

But a Home Office pathologist has told the BBC's East Midlands

:01:28.:01:30.

Inside Out programme he suspects she was murdered.

:01:31.:01:34.

This week marks the fifth anniversary

:01:35.:01:38.

The 30-year-old from Sutton in Ashfield died in Italy

:01:39.:01:43.

from multiple stab wounds to her throat.

:01:44.:01:46.

Italian police later closed the case as a suicide.

:01:47.:01:49.

It has caused such lasting effects that I don't know

:01:50.:01:54.

You know, this is where some of the anomalies of the case are.

:01:55.:02:04.

On tonight's Inside Out, her parents meet retired

:02:05.:02:07.

detective Tony Blockley, who's taken a fresh look

:02:08.:02:09.

He shows photographs from Claire's autopsy

:02:10.:02:15.

The simple fact is that stabbing oneself in the neck is

:02:16.:02:22.

There are no obvious defensive injuries on the hands or forearms

:02:23.:02:30.

where somebody has warded off or grasped at an assailant

:02:31.:02:34.

but if you were taken by surprise or overcome from behind,

:02:35.:02:38.

you wouldn't necessarily expect to see them.

:02:39.:02:42.

While it would be physically possible to do it to yourself.

:02:43.:02:45.

Looking at this, if I was briefing a Senior Investigating Officer

:02:46.:02:49.

at this autopsy, I would be suggesting that you need to go

:02:50.:02:54.

Claire's parents have also met the Minister for Europe,

:02:55.:03:02.

who has added his backing for the case to be reopened.

:03:03.:03:05.

This just looks wrong and there's a smell about it which is not nice.

:03:06.:03:10.

And just to close the case and say it was suicide

:03:11.:03:13.

And therefore, I think we have to do all in our power

:03:14.:03:18.

I feel as though maybe we're going to the next step

:03:19.:03:24.

The next step is to ask the Italian authorities to reopen the case

:03:25.:03:32.

and if they don't, the Martins will consider taking it to

:03:33.:03:35.

And you can see more on this story on tonight's Inside Out,

:03:36.:03:45.

Still to come - a parade in praise of Claudio Ranieri

:03:46.:03:51.

just days after he was sacked as Leicester City manager.

:03:52.:04:00.

Yes, fans have come together in celebration, one that has been

:04:01.:04:08.

organised by an 11-year-old boy in tribute to his hero.

:04:09.:04:14.

And those fans are headed to the King Power Stadium to see how the

:04:15.:04:20.

players respond against Liverpool to Claudio Ranieri's sacking.

:04:21.:04:23.

Next, though, research being carried out here in the East Midlands

:04:24.:04:26.

suggests a flawed exercise test could be leading to patients

:04:27.:04:30.

needlessly undergoing open heart surgery.

:04:31.:04:33.

A team at the University of Leicester says the

:04:34.:04:35.

internationally-recognised bike test - used to diagnose a narrowing

:04:36.:04:40.

of the aortic heart valve - is "highly inaccurate".

:04:41.:04:45.

Our health correspondent Rob Sissons has more.

:04:46.:04:54.

Professor Gerry McCann is a cardiologist. His research at the

:04:55.:05:01.

University of Leicester is into an internationally recognised bike

:05:02.:05:05.

tests and suggest it's not reliable when it comes to selecting patients

:05:06.:05:11.

for aortic valve replacement. It's possible to many people are having

:05:12.:05:15.

an operation but it's likely that most of them will require an

:05:16.:05:21.

operation at some point, perhaps an elderly group, you may send a

:05:22.:05:25.

patient to surgery who would never have developed symptoms. Mike has a

:05:26.:05:32.

good level of fitness. It's looking at lung function and heart function

:05:33.:05:36.

while we are stressing them on the bike. The concern is breathlessness

:05:37.:05:42.

in-patients may be down to the fact they don't exercise much, so

:05:43.:05:47.

thousands of operations may be done to early, putting patients at risk

:05:48.:05:53.

of complications. The beauty of this test is it takes a few minutes and

:05:54.:05:58.

you get instant results, so hardly surprising it is popular among the

:05:59.:06:02.

medical fraternity and these findings are controversial and cry

:06:03.:06:09.

out for more research. Across the UK around 10,000 valve replacements are

:06:10.:06:15.

carried out each year. The typical cost, ?15,000 each and patients

:06:16.:06:19.

usually stay in hospital between seven and ten days. Postponing

:06:20.:06:25.

surgery could save the NHS millions of pounds a year. Some people really

:06:26.:06:31.

believe the bike test is good and results question that. The National

:06:32.:06:35.

Institute for health research paid for this study. The hope that

:06:36.:06:38.

:07:01.:07:03.

more than 50 injuries when she died. Her aunts and grandmother

:07:13.:07:15.

into its third week. The director of education

was not in school. Six members of staff later came

:07:46.:07:49.

forward to speak to a doctor supporting the school

The former Nottinghamshire social worker who uncovered widespread

:10:28.:10:29.

abuse of British children sent to Australia says horrific stories

:10:30.:10:32.

Margaret Humphreys will give evidence about the child migration

:10:33.:10:35.

scheme to the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse.

:10:36.:10:38.

Our Social Affairs Correspondent, Jeremy Ball is here.

:10:39.:10:40.

Today's been a real milestone in this inquiry, hasn't it?

:10:41.:10:49.

Yes, it's going to take several years.

:10:50.:10:50.

And today they heard the first evidence.

:10:51.:10:55.

That was evidence about a huge scandal that originally

:10:56.:10:58.

Thousands of children from broken homes were sent

:10:59.:11:05.

to Australia, where many ended up being physically

:11:06.:11:07.

We can show you pictures today of how the inquiry was formally opened

:11:08.:11:16.

in London this morning. It's begun hearing emotional

:11:17.:11:17.

accounts of what happened in the years after World War Two,

:11:18.:11:19.

that children were "forcibly deported" without their parents'

:11:20.:11:22.

consent, that some were wrongly told they were orphans, and survivors

:11:23.:11:24.

are being represented by a West Bridgford-based charity

:11:25.:11:26.

called the Child Migrants Trust. Some left year when they were four

:11:27.:11:39.

or five years of age and I think over the next few weeks we are going

:11:40.:11:46.

to hear the most horrific stories of their times in these residential

:11:47.:11:51.

institutions overseas. We're going to hear the voices for the first

:11:52.:11:56.

time and I would just say, let's pause, let's just listen.

:11:57.:12:03.

It's not just about the Australia side of things.

:12:04.:12:06.

We're also going to hear about allegations

:12:07.:12:08.

of historical abuse here in the East Midlands, aren't we?

:12:09.:12:11.

Yes, because although it's a national inquiry, two of its 13

:12:12.:12:13.

topics are about what happened in this region.

:12:14.:12:15.

One strand's looking into the former MP, Greville Janner.

:12:16.:12:17.

That'll hear from several men who say he abused them,

:12:18.:12:20.

while they were growing up around Leicester.

:12:21.:12:21.

And another strand of this inquiry's going to look

:12:22.:12:23.

at hundreds of complaints about Nottinghamshire

:12:24.:12:30.

You'll remember that abuse first emerged at Beechwood in Mapperley.

:12:31.:12:33.

So what's it all going to achieve after all this time?

:12:34.:12:37.

Put very simply, it's looking for institutional failings

:12:38.:12:40.

and whether there were cover-ups, and finding ways to make sure

:12:41.:12:46.

Jeremy, thanks very thanks very much.

:12:47.:12:54.

Tributes continue to be paid to the BBC Radio Derby

:12:55.:12:56.

presenter Andy Potter, who died yesterday only a month

:12:57.:12:59.

Andy, who was 55, was part of the Radio Derby presenter line-up

:13:00.:13:03.

His family have paid their own tribute, praising

:13:04.:13:08.

the "tremendous courage" with which he fought his illness.

:13:09.:13:11.

And despite their "unbelievable sadness," they've asked

:13:12.:13:14.

people to remember him - and simply smile.

:13:19.:13:20.

It was only a month ago that Andy publicly announced

:13:21.:13:25.

He spent his final days surrounded by family and friends

:13:26.:13:31.

in the Macmillan ward of the Royal Derby hospital.

:13:32.:13:34.

Today, colleagues have been paying tribute to him

:13:35.:13:37.

and to his passionate support of culture in Derby and Derbyshire.

:13:38.:13:42.

He is one of the people who's fundamental to the support

:13:43.:13:45.

for Derby artists and has been for however long.

:13:46.:13:50.

It is just a shock to think about what will be left after this,

:13:51.:13:54.

for him personally but also for the arts and what he loved.

:13:55.:13:58.

Andy had also established a regular spot each year

He would interview them, some difficult ones but he'd manage

to get things out of them perhaps other people couldn't get out

:14:13.:14:15.

of them and by the end, they used to shake his hand

:14:16.:14:18.

and said, thank you for a great interview and they would find him

:14:19.:14:23.

the next year at Chelsea and do the same again

:14:24.:14:25.

Tributes on social media have flooded in both since and even

:14:26.:14:30.

The listeners were with Andy all the way.

:14:31.:14:41.

he had been getting on, we were getting messages

:14:42.:14:45.

all the time, how's Andy, what's the latest?

:14:46.:14:46.

Andy kept in touch with people as much as he could but the interest

to arrange this. What made you decide to do this? I wanted to show

my point that Ranieri, best manager we have ever had and a thank you

from 40 has done. Your big sister is behind you. The two have you heard

tribute. Jack was hard working, he was in tears and for Leicester last

year it was the most incredible experience. I'm not a mass of

football fans but for what Claudio has brought to the city, how could

we not paid tribute to such an incredible man? All of you are here

to say thank you, and this evening is the game against Liverpool, the

remarkable 72 hours. It was the weekend for farewells.

Claudio Ranieri taking his leave of the players and sharing a final

:19:15.:19:20.

moment with us. What we achieved in Leicester, I hope it will happen

:19:21.:19:25.

again but it will be difficult. Was it a emotional with the players? No.

:19:26.:19:32.

He had gone by the time the owners flew in. They will be wondering

:19:33.:19:38.

about the response from fans, and the players who eventually took to

:19:39.:19:43.

social media to say goodbye and in one case to deny any role in

:19:44.:19:48.

Ranieri's sacking, apart from the performance that must be fixed. We

:19:49.:19:54.

have to. The unthinkable is going down. It's come to this and it is

:19:55.:20:01.

sad it has come to this but it's because we haven't performed as

:20:02.:20:04.

players and we have to take responsibility. Part of the issue

:20:05.:20:10.

will be how the men and women of the press were swept away by Ranieri.

:20:11.:20:17.

Journalists who went to deliver a letter found themselves saying a

:20:18.:20:22.

fond farewell. We knocked on the door and he answered it with a smile

:20:23.:20:27.

and shook our hands and invited us in for coffee. Claudio gave them and

:20:28.:20:32.

their supporters the biggest possible moment. How fast will

:20:33.:20:37.

everyone leave that and their feelings for him behind?

:20:38.:20:43.

This is Arlo White of the American network NBC. Last time we spoke,

Leeming Mayday but it has all changed. I got back from Seville to

:20:50.:20:56.

get the news on Thursday, I was shocked at the timing but then it

:20:57.:21:00.

sunk in and you look at the league table and their form and the owners'

:21:01.:21:07.

money they have put in to restore the title last year and it began to

:21:08.:21:13.

make more sense. I've never seen her stereo like we experienced last

:21:14.:21:18.

Friday and Saturday in the statement from Claudio was a tear-jerker but I

:21:19.:21:24.

think it was the right decision, though I still think you can want a

:21:25.:21:27.

statue outside the ground for what he did. As someone who looks at it

:21:28.:21:33.

from America, what has to Leicester's image? It hasn't helped

:21:34.:21:41.

that. Words like the trail, discussed, treachery are being used

:21:42.:21:45.

but I think there's more to this story than people realise. Claudio

:21:46.:21:52.

did a fantastic job but he was part of something bigger. It was

:21:53.:21:56.

wonderful confluence of events that led to Leicester City winning the

:21:57.:22:04.

title. He was vital to it. People in America see the fairy tale and

:22:05.:22:07.

Leicester City were trapped in a fairy tale. If they kept the status

:22:08.:22:13.

quo they would have gone down, no doubt, but if they fired that

:22:14.:22:16.

they've looked like the bad guys and that is how they are perceived. It's

:22:17.:22:21.

up to the players and Craig Shakespeare and the staff to prove

:22:22.:22:27.

it was the right decision. Let's wrap everything else up now.

:22:28.:22:29.

Away from Leicester - Derby County's play-off hopes took

:22:30.:22:31.

And it's there where Mark Shardlow starts his round-up.

:22:32.:22:36.

It's been a dreadful Bradbury Derby, in contrast for Villa, their fifth

:22:37.:22:50.

win since 2016. A stonewall penalty, said manager Steve McClaren, but it

:22:51.:22:54.

was turned down. In the two, Mansfield town fought back from a

:22:55.:23:00.

goal down against Newport to take them to eighth, just outside the

:23:01.:23:03.

play-offs but only on goal distance, their winner going from a penalty

:23:04.:23:11.

given for handball. Meanwhile, Notts County had a goalless draw.

:23:12.:23:16.

In other sport, good news coming out of Leicester for rugby's Tigers -

:23:17.:23:20.

who hammered Harlequins on Friday night and for basketball's Riders -

:23:21.:23:23.

who've seen both their men's and women's teams qualify

:23:24.:23:25.

for their respective BBL Trophy Finals.

:23:26.:23:27.

Tigers' win was the first home defeat for Harlequins all year.

:23:28.:23:29.

Meanwhile, this will be the third Trophy final in a row

:23:30.:23:32.

In ice hockey, two games, two close defeats for Nottingham Panthers.

:23:33.:23:42.

And in Motorsport a fantastic fourth place in Australia

:23:43.:23:44.

in the World Supersport for Jacksdale's Kyle Ryde.

:23:45.:23:46.

Now, back here at Leicester let's hear from more fans.

:23:47.:23:51.

Their response tonight to the owners, to the players,

:23:52.:23:54.

to the absent Claudio Ranieri will be really interesting.

:23:55.:23:56.

Colin, they have had a few days to digest this news of Claudio

:23:57.:24:10.

Ranieri's sacking but how do they feel? Robert, you said you were

:24:11.:24:17.

disappointed. It's a bit gutting after what he did for us last season

:24:18.:24:21.

and every fan would like to say thank you. Sunni Tech, you have a

:24:22.:24:29.

sign there saying he will be missed. He will be missed after what he did,

:24:30.:24:33.

he brought us up in the premiership, he helped us with relegation,

:24:34.:24:40.

achieving a premiership which Leicester has never done, how could

:24:41.:24:44.

we do this to him? I feel so sad about it. Charles, would you get

:24:45.:24:51.

behind the team tonight despite this? I will, very distant pointed

:24:52.:24:58.

about Claudio, but I will be behind the team. That's what fans feel

:24:59.:25:05.

ahead of kick-off which will be at 8pm. You can follow it all on BBC

:25:06.:25:13.

Radio Leicester with full commentary and we will report on our late

:25:14.:25:18.

bulletin, and match of the day will have highlights later.

:25:19.:25:23.

Yes, you can hear it here at 10:30pm.

:25:24.:25:28.

What will happen at the match? I'm of two minds. It's been raining

:25:29.:25:35.

heavily in Leicester and elsewhere. We had a bit of everything, some

:25:36.:25:40.

wintry showers, some sunshine, this was the satellite picture over the

:25:41.:25:45.

East Midlands and the rest of the UK, heavy showers at times. We had

:25:46.:25:52.

this picture sent in with this angry bank of cloud coming towards Rutland

:25:53.:25:59.

and even some mum clouds spotted over Derbyshire, so thank you to

:26:00.:26:02.

Weather Watchers for sending those in. Tomorrow it a similar picture,

:26:03.:26:09.

showery rain but bright spells, because this barony area of low

:26:10.:26:14.

pressure is throwing fronts towards us in the next few days. Tonight we

:26:15.:26:19.

have a yellow weather warning in force for Derbyshire and

:26:20.:26:24.

Nottinghamshire so take care on untreated routes. Overnight, a few

:26:25.:26:29.

touches of wintriness as we go across the East Midlands, lots of

:26:30.:26:34.

patchy showers tonight, some drier spells in between and lows around 0

:26:35.:26:42.

Celsius so be aware of the ice risk. Tomorrow we will start off on a

:26:43.:26:46.

bright note, you may see some sunshine but cloud will build over

:26:47.:26:52.

the course of the afternoon, highs around 8 degrees with lots of

:26:53.:26:56.

showers later in the day. As we look towards the middle of the week, we

:26:57.:27:02.

will see cloudy conditions, a little uncertainty about how far this rain

:27:03.:27:06.

will move north that do take your brollies out in the next few days

:27:07.:27:10.

because we still have low pressure in charge. I will eat you with the

:27:11.:27:16.

hope that, a mixture of sunshine and blustery showers in the next few

:27:17.:27:21.

days. It stopped being very nice. Cold and wet. Don't forget that

:27:22.:27:28.

result, 10:30pm, see you then. Goodbye.

:27:29.:27:55.

To be in the Lords, you have to be punctual...

:27:56.:27:57.

literally have to slam the door in somebody's face.

:27:58.:28:02.
