It's almost 6.30 - you're watching East Midlands Today.

:00:09.:00:11.

Tonight: Following in his mother's footsteps -

:00:12.:00:12.

Prince Harry returns to a Leicester charity visited by Princess Diana.

:00:13.:00:37.

His visit rekindled memories of 1991. Also, dramatic pictures of an

:00:38.:00:47.

explosion and fire at an edge city substation. Plus health chiefs hold

:00:48.:00:50.

a second consultation over plans to rush in IVF treatment. And the

:00:51.:00:53.

finest of things, will take a look at a new exhibition exploring five

:00:54.:00:56.

centuries of fashion at Chatsworth house.

:00:57.:01:05.

Good evening and welcome to Tuesday's programme

:01:06.:01:06.

with Dominic Heale and me, Anne Davies.

:01:07.:01:09.

First tonight - Prince Harry followed in his mother's footsteps

:01:10.:01:11.

today as part of a Royal tour of Leicester.

:01:12.:01:13.

He's visited LASS, the HIV charity which Diana visited in 1991.

:01:14.:01:19.

As part of his visit the Prince also found out about a project

:01:20.:01:22.

in Hamilton which helps schoolchildren reach

:01:23.:01:23.

their full potential. Victoria Hicks reports.

:01:24.:01:35.

Rural support for the yes they can project at this community college in

:01:36.:01:42.

Leicester, a chance for Prince Harry to find out about this charity's

:01:43.:01:47.

work, raising aspirations among young people across the city. I

:01:48.:01:53.

thought he would be formal but he was relaxed and making jokes, he was

:01:54.:01:57.

so funny and was genuinely interested in people individually.

:01:58.:02:03.

It was so amazing, meeting Prince Harry, not a lot of people can say

:02:04.:02:08.

that, it's fantastic. Today's visit, real coup for this project. It's a

:02:09.:02:15.

huge thing, because we are very small charity, a small team of

:02:16.:02:21.

individuals but we have got huge aspirations in terms of the work

:02:22.:02:23.

were trying to do so this was a great opportunity to place a

:02:24.:02:30.

spotlight on our project but on the young people of Leicester, we're

:02:31.:02:34.

trying to work as hard as we can to make a difference in their lives.

:02:35.:02:40.

From here his Royal Highness visited LASS, the HIV charity for Leicester,

:02:41.:02:44.

Mr Shea and Rutland which is mother visited 26 years ago. The Princess

:02:45.:02:53.

of Wales came here to see the LASS panels, and commemorated the lives

:02:54.:02:57.

of those who died was eight. I did manage to show him this, when she

:02:58.:03:05.

came, she opened the front door, she was just so lovely. What does it

:03:06.:03:12.

mean that her son is now carrying on that work? I think that's super, it

:03:13.:03:17.

means he has the heart of his mother. Prince Harry unveiled a

:03:18.:03:24.

plaque to commemorate 30 years after charity's work supporting people

:03:25.:03:25.

living and affected by HIV. Well, this afternoon the Prince

:03:26.:03:31.

visited another project in Leicester where he saw how getting active

:03:32.:03:35.

is boosting the confidence of youngsters from more

:03:36.:03:38.

deprived areas of the city. Pink Lizard is an

:03:39.:03:41.

organisation project which makes learning fun

:03:42.:03:42.

and uplifting and the Prince was keen to get stuck

:03:43.:03:45.

in as Jo Healey reports. Being Prince Harry, couldn't resist

:03:46.:03:59.

joining in. On the head. What do you think of his ball skills? He was

:04:00.:04:05.

quite good. They came in and said he didn't want to but he has got good

:04:06.:04:11.

skills. Good technique. He knows what is going on even in communities

:04:12.:04:16.

and kids nowadays, they find it hard to grow up in areas like this. It

:04:17.:04:20.

was great fame to come down here. It means a lot. And he is a humble guy,

:04:21.:04:27.

very nice guy. A lot of kids get in trouble, when you have got nothing

:04:28.:04:31.

to do, so something like this, it was so good because we got straight

:04:32.:04:37.

in here and made friends, it keeps you fit as well. He is just one of

:04:38.:04:42.

thousands of young people that have been helped over the past six years.

:04:43.:04:46.

We have different projects, to get people into work, make them feel

:04:47.:04:52.

good about themselves. Is it successful? It a lot about having

:04:53.:04:58.

fun. And Prince Harry was game again with an impromptu photo call. He's

:04:59.:05:03.

just like one of us, thought he would be more charming. He is

:05:04.:05:10.

down-to-earth, though! He may be a real prince but as far as they are

:05:11.:05:13.

concerned he has still got his eye on the ball.

:05:14.:05:16.

Still to come - villagers in Derbyshire pitch in to improve

:05:17.:05:19.

Eight years ago a taxi driver was murdered

:05:20.:05:24.

outside Cromford station - now work's being carried out to make

:05:25.:05:27.

the area feel safer and more welcoming.

:05:28.:05:37.

A massive plume of black smoke could be seen for miles around

:05:38.:05:41.

Leicester today after an electricity sub station exploded

:05:42.:05:44.

45,000 properties lost power for a time.

:05:45.:05:48.

Our reporter Simon Ward was there at the height

:05:49.:05:50.

Could even in, the good news is, the fire is out, you might just be able

:05:51.:06:11.

to make out some white smoke coming out from that part of the

:06:12.:06:15.

electricity substation which is completely destroyed. If you smell

:06:16.:06:19.

the air this evening you can smell smoke even though there is rain will

:06:20.:06:25.

stop the Fire Service had just returned, they have mainly pulled

:06:26.:06:29.

out of here, they are coming back every couple of hours to make sure

:06:30.:06:33.

things remain safe here. Thanks to the quick work of Leicestershire

:06:34.:06:37.

Fire Service and the Western fire company it's only the substation

:06:38.:06:42.

that has been destroyed. Acrid smoke drifts across the Leicester skyline.

:06:43.:06:48.

At its source is a high-powered electricity substation, now well

:06:49.:06:54.

alight. On onlookers come and take pictures to stop Gerry Burke lives

:06:55.:06:59.

next to the substation. We do cross and we saw a great ball of fire

:07:00.:07:03.

across the substation and it started going up. All we saw was this big

:07:04.:07:09.

plume of smoke and then this fire kept going up, obviously we had all

:07:10.:07:13.

the fire engines and thought, right, something is go to happen, it kept

:07:14.:07:18.

getting bigger and bigger. Almost 9000 litres of oil are part of the

:07:19.:07:22.

substation. The Fire Service kept it contained but had to allow the fire

:07:23.:07:27.

to burn itself out. We know the apparatus is live until we have it

:07:28.:07:31.

confirmed in writing that it is isolated then we can safely make,

:07:32.:07:37.

commit firefighters with an element of safety. From the flames were out

:07:38.:07:41.

Leicestershire Fire Service allowed us to film much closer to the source

:07:42.:07:46.

of the fire. The transformer that could a and exploded looked exactly

:07:47.:07:50.

like this one, if we move across here, we can see that a foam blanket

:07:51.:07:54.

is now being put on the transformative cool it down now the

:07:55.:07:57.

fire is out. Homes and businesses lost power for a short time before

:07:58.:08:05.

supplies were restored. There was a bang, the power went off for about

:08:06.:08:10.

two minutes. Then they got it back on again really quick, fair play to

:08:11.:08:15.

them. Just went up in smoke, we have had to evacuate and move on, let's

:08:16.:08:20.

see what happens from here. As the smoke reduced the Fire Service

:08:21.:08:23.

monitored the scene to make sure it's safe. And fire officers here

:08:24.:08:31.

tonight out of me that there are still very high temperatures inside

:08:32.:08:35.

the fire station so it's likely to be smouldering for some time and

:08:36.:08:39.

they will be returning overnight. We have had a statement from the power

:08:40.:08:43.

company who say everyone now has their electricity supply back on and

:08:44.:08:45.

forensic investigations will take place.

:08:46.:08:49.

A woman has been sentenced to life in prison for dousing her

:08:50.:08:52.

The police described Katie Leong's attack on Daniel Rotariu as "utterly

:08:53.:08:59.

wicked" and say he's lucky to have survived.

:09:00.:09:02.

He suffered burns to 32 per cent of his body and lost

:09:03.:09:05.

A jury at Leicester Crown Court found her guilty of attempted murder

:09:06.:09:11.

Council leaders say they have "serious concerns"

:09:12.:09:18.

about major changes planned for Lincolnshire's hospitals.

:09:19.:09:21.

As part of a five year plan set out by NHS bosses,

:09:22.:09:24.

Grantham's A could be downgraded and some

:09:25.:09:26.

Lincolnshire County Council have responded, saying they're concerned

:09:27.:09:31.

the plans won't improve services for everyone.

:09:32.:09:32.

Managers say no decisions have been made.

:09:33.:09:41.

The NHS is to consult again over controversial changes to the funding

:09:42.:09:45.

of fertility treatment in parts of the East Midlands.

:09:46.:09:48.

Bosses want to reduce the age limit at which women in

:09:49.:09:51.

mid-Nottinghamshire can access IVF treatment on the health service.

:09:52.:09:54.

Our health correspondant Rob Sissons can tell us more.

:09:55.:10:01.

This is a bit of an obstacle being placed in the wake of these plans,

:10:02.:10:11.

why is that? It is because the health scrutiny committee of

:10:12.:10:14.

Nottinghamshire aren't happy with the consultation that is being

:10:15.:10:17.

carried out. I'm standing outside the headquarters of the Mansfield

:10:18.:10:21.

and Ashfield clinical commissioning group that decided this

:10:22.:10:25.

controversial policy, they have been out to consultation once, let's take

:10:26.:10:30.

a look at the current age range. These apply across the East Midlands

:10:31.:10:32.

for women wanting to undergo IVF. The decision had been taken here to

:10:33.:10:49.

go to this number, 25-34. Let's take a look at the current situation with

:10:50.:10:50.

men. But the plan was to bring it down to

:10:51.:11:07.

a maximum of 40 years old. This was due to come into place by April. The

:11:08.:11:14.

health scrutiny committee, made up of councillors in Nottinghamshire,

:11:15.:11:17.

was worried would lead to more of a postcode lottery for funding in

:11:18.:11:23.

Nottinghamshire. Personally I think it's rather low, a lot of women are

:11:24.:11:27.

only starting to look at planning a family they have been working for

:11:28.:11:31.

buying their own house, a lot of women have wanted to do that burst,

:11:32.:11:35.

and for some people it may be around the age of 35, it would be too late

:11:36.:11:40.

for them to access any IVF treatment on the NHS. How did the NHS feel

:11:41.:11:50.

about having a second consultation? Who spent months on it, money on it,

:11:51.:11:54.

they're going to have to do more of it after the local elections, they

:11:55.:12:00.

say they are frustrated. We are disappointed because we followed due

:12:01.:12:03.

process in the consultation, we tried to come up with a compromise

:12:04.:12:09.

that we thought would take into account a wide range of views that

:12:10.:12:15.

we heard, and also the clinical evidence as well, that is our role,

:12:16.:12:21.

to balance all postings. I think what this shows is it is a sensitive

:12:22.:12:25.

area, very controversial, perhaps one reason why other parts of the

:12:26.:12:29.

East Midlands so far haven't gone down this route.

:12:30.:12:32.

It's an exhibition of five centuries of fashion -

:12:33.:12:37.

as worn by the Devonshire family at the Palace of the Peaks.

:12:38.:12:49.

Scientists at the University of Leicester are trying to develop

:12:50.:12:52.

a new reliable test to help people with serious breathing problems

:12:53.:12:54.

The study - the biggest of its kind in the world -

:12:55.:13:00.

involves a thousand patients - all recruited from

:13:01.:13:03.

Leicester's hospitals. Giles Taylor reports.

:13:04.:13:12.

I'm going to take you... Clive was rushed into clinical hospital with

:13:13.:13:20.

breathing problems. There's been talk about me having seasonal

:13:21.:13:24.

asthma, whether something is triggered that off, they're trying

:13:25.:13:27.

to investigate now Melissa is my first asthma like attack, I'm being

:13:28.:13:33.

investigated. He is grateful for the research which the Saint involve

:13:34.:13:40.

needles. I'm a total needle phobic, so this is great for me. He's the

:13:41.:13:45.

perfect candidate for this unique project. What they call your breath

:13:46.:13:52.

signature is unique, with thousands of possible compounds and samples of

:13:53.:13:56.

breath. A huge task is to make sense of the patterns. We know that it

:13:57.:14:02.

contains a rich mixture of a number of thousands of different chemicals,

:14:03.:14:06.

but we're not quite sure yet about which patterns of chemicals linked

:14:07.:14:12.

to different diseases. The goal is to develop a simple breath test but

:14:13.:14:17.

can suggest best possible treatment of individual treatments. I think

:14:18.:14:22.

Clive signifies the need for this research, he has a label of asthma

:14:23.:14:28.

but most not have regular asthma treatment can he get symptoms of it

:14:29.:14:32.

and get it for many years but this is the first he has come to hospital

:14:33.:14:36.

a severe and life-threatening flare-up of this asthma. The

:14:37.:14:42.

researchers expected to take up to four years but it is hoped it will

:14:43.:14:43.

make an improvement to care. Police are investigating

:14:44.:14:46.

the attempted robbery of a cash A JCB was used in a ramraid

:14:47.:14:49.

on the Co-op store in Great Glen Witnesses reported seeing four

:14:50.:14:55.

men load the machine onto the back of a truck,

:14:56.:14:58.

but both were later abandoned. It's not believed that

:14:59.:15:01.

any cash was taken. CCTV footage has been released

:15:02.:15:08.

showing the moment a Nottinghamshire police officer dived

:15:09.:15:10.

in to the River Trent PC James Patterson swam 50 metres

:15:11.:15:12.

in February's icy waters Officers, including PC Paul Easter,

:15:13.:15:19.

pulled them to safety PC Patterson and Easter had been

:15:20.:15:25.

on duty at a Nottingham Forest game Four officers involved have been

:15:26.:15:31.

recommended for a commendation. Volunteers in a Derbyshire

:15:32.:15:41.

village are coming together to improve the image

:15:42.:15:43.

of their local railway station. In 2009, a taxi driver was killed

:15:44.:15:45.

outside Cromford Station. Now, the parish council has adopted

:15:46.:15:47.

it - and work's being carried out to make it feel safer

:15:48.:15:50.

and more welcoming. Another hard day 's work. Today

:15:51.:16:06.

these volunteers are clearing bark from recently cut down trees around

:16:07.:16:12.

Cromford station. It's where in 2009 local taxi driver Stuart Little was

:16:13.:16:17.

killed, a moment in the site's history that hasn't been forgotten

:16:18.:16:22.

by those living nearby. Now Cromford parish Council has adopted the

:16:23.:16:26.

station, work is being carried out to transform its image. Different

:16:27.:16:31.

councillors have been individual volunteers for some time but we get

:16:32.:16:34.

involved at the start of this year because if we adopted the station,

:16:35.:16:39.

we could then access grant through the parish council in order to carry

:16:40.:16:47.

out the project. It's in partnership with Network Rail, East Midlands

:16:48.:16:49.

Trains and the county council to make sure the station has a bright

:16:50.:16:53.

future. The Derwent Valley line community rail partnership is also

:16:54.:16:57.

supporting the volunteers work, they could then I've grown trees to make

:16:58.:17:00.

the station lighter and more welcoming. -- cutdown overgrown

:17:01.:17:06.

trees. They have been working here twice a month for five years, in

:17:07.:17:11.

that time they have planted more than 1000 bulbs. They approached the

:17:12.:17:14.

station is now decorated with plants and herbs. It's a matter of caring

:17:15.:17:21.

for your community. The station used to win awards in the days of British

:17:22.:17:26.

rail and we want to restore the station to something like its former

:17:27.:17:30.

glory. The summit may already look transformed but they said they not

:17:31.:17:31.

finished yet. First football and the Leicester

:17:32.:17:38.

City striker Jamie Vardy's been Vardy, who was training

:17:39.:17:41.

with Egland this morning, has revealed he's had death threats

:17:42.:17:46.

after Leicester sacked Vardy feels the threats

:17:47.:17:48.

are as a result of reports that he, and other senior players

:17:49.:17:53.

at Leicester, played a role in the Italian

:17:54.:17:54.

being sacked last month. The striker is adamant

:17:55.:17:58.

he had nothing to do Onto rugby, and Aaron Mauger says

:17:59.:18:00.

he's devastated after being sacked as head coach of the Leicester

:18:01.:18:12.

Tigers. He was given the news yesterday -

:18:13.:18:13.

but asked to stay on for one final week as the team prepares for a key

:18:14.:18:17.

game with local rivals Northampton. So 24 hours after being told

:18:18.:18:20.

he was no longer wanted - today he was back on the training

:18:21.:18:23.

field. Aaron Mauger has been in temporary

:18:24.:18:36.

charge for three months. He wanted the top job, anticipated seeing the

:18:37.:18:39.

season out but in a brief conversation with the ball

:18:40.:18:41.

yesterday, he was told he was no longer wanted. I would have loved to

:18:42.:18:47.

have stayed for the rest of the season, a few more Games, I thought

:18:48.:18:50.

I would get the opportunity and the right to do it but it's not my

:18:51.:18:55.

decision, I have to just hope the team get it right. There was little

:18:56.:18:58.

time to celebrate winning this, the first trophy in four years on

:18:59.:19:04.

Sunday. It came as a shock, he said doesn't want any sympathy, wants to

:19:05.:19:08.

put the team in the best position to play at the weekend, as players, we

:19:09.:19:12.

want to go out this weekend and went for our own, he has put a lot into

:19:13.:19:16.

the club and we want to repay him with a good win against the Auld

:19:17.:19:19.

enemy. Jordan Murphy coached alongside him for the last 18 months

:19:20.:19:24.

and both played together as Tigers. But a lot of fun, he is a very good

:19:25.:19:29.

friend of mine, very good coach, one of the best I've worked with, the

:19:30.:19:36.

board have made a decision,. Despite a recent upturn in results, heavy

:19:37.:19:40.

defeats in Europe counted against him and the club have opted for a

:19:41.:19:44.

restructure with Matt O'Connor written in next month to take

:19:45.:19:49.

charge. I was given the opportunity to leave yesterday or see the weak

:19:50.:19:52.

outcome I'm committed to the script for as long as I can, unfortunately

:19:53.:19:56.

it's only four more days but it's not really about me this week, it's

:19:57.:20:00.

about applying group in getting the team right for the performance at

:20:01.:20:04.

the weekend. A turbulent 48 hours but the quest for more prestigious

:20:05.:20:07.

trophies then this has led to another sacking.

:20:08.:20:12.

Now I am feeling rather short - like a little smurf to be honest

:20:13.:20:15.

because with me now are three victorious Leicester Riders

:20:16.:20:18.

At the weekend in Glasgow the Riders showed their utter dominance

:20:19.:20:28.

They retained the BBL Trophy crown with a 91-58 victory over

:20:29.:20:32.

the Plymouth Raiders in a one sided final.

:20:33.:20:35.

So with us tonight is most valuable player Taylor King,

:20:36.:20:38.

captain Tyler Bernardini and British forward Andy Thomson.

:20:39.:20:48.

Thank you all for coming in. What is it mean to get your hands on this

:20:49.:21:05.

trophy? Very proud. This is a goal, to come here and win has been picked

:21:06.:21:11.

for the club. You were the most valuable player, the man of the

:21:12.:21:15.

match, getting 20 points, which was incredible, we can see some of the

:21:16.:21:19.

celebrations. I think you were a bit emotional. I was overwhelmed with

:21:20.:21:26.

emotion for sure. It's my first trophy I have one as a professional,

:21:27.:21:32.

to do it with a group of guys is very special and I fortunately had a

:21:33.:21:36.

good game but we all did. It was a collective team effort. To do it by

:21:37.:21:44.

33 points was amazing, you are on a 16 game winning streak, can you go

:21:45.:21:48.

on to win the league? That's our main goal, we set out to win

:21:49.:21:53.

trophies and we have got one now, we have a tough run of Games coming up,

:21:54.:21:59.

ten Games in the next 20 days, our main goal is to win the league. Some

:22:00.:22:08.

more pictures of you in the celebrations, how pleased you for

:22:09.:22:12.

the coach? What is it mean to you for him? It was huge, it is about

successful suffer him to get that win shows the preparation and gain

plenty put together. Getting 2000 fans each week, is British

basketball growing and are you getting more exposure? I think we

:22:38.:22:43.

have seen this year average fan base continue to grow, we're only a year,

:22:44.:22:50.

the profile of the sport in this tissue has been massive, with rugby,

:22:51.:22:55.

football, that has really helped us in our growth and fan base and

:22:56.:23:00.

becoming a bigger part of the community. Another huge game at the

weekend on Mother's Day, get down if you can, the trade they will be

From elaborate gowns to ornate brooches -

:23:17.:23:18.

a new exhibition showcasing five centuries of fashion

:23:19.:23:20.

at Chatsworth House in Derbyshire is soon to open.

:23:21.:23:22.

Hundreds of garments have been restored and put on display,

:23:23.:23:28.

Each tells the story of the men and women who have lived

:23:29.:23:32.

From the pomp and splendour of a Royal commission to address fit for

:23:33.:23:49.

a catwalk, they are putting the spotlight on the mini outfits and

:23:50.:23:53.

objects with generations of the family. These elaborate costumes

:23:54.:23:59.

were made especially for the Devonshire ball in 1897 to celebrate

:24:00.:24:04.

Queen Victoria's to believe. It became known as the century. It

:24:05.:24:17.

must've been an amazing occasion. And to wear some of these close, I

:24:18.:24:22.

can't believe... They were huge and heavy. When it comes to fashion, the

:24:23.:24:27.

Devonshire women have made their mark. Hamish Bowles, curator and

:24:28.:24:37.

editor at large at American Vogue, has tried to capture the different

:24:38.:24:43.

personalities. You have someone like Joe Gianna, who was really the most

:24:44.:24:49.

fashionable woman of her period, and even influenced the French queen and

:24:50.:24:54.

the French court in her style. And then you have someone like Duchess

:24:55.:24:57.

even who is much more frugal and thrifty and dressed in a very

:24:58.:25:04.

correct way. This is a dinner table you won't forget. This room has been

:25:05.:25:09.

filled with clothes worn by more recent members of the family and

:25:10.:25:14.

they represent some of the biggest names in contemporary fashion,

:25:15.:25:17.

ranging from the likes of Chanel, the euro and Vivienne Westwood. And

:25:18.:25:22.

then there are the likes of wedding dresses from the Dowager Duchess to

:25:23.:25:27.

her granddaughter, the supermodel Stella 20. The exhibition brings

:25:28.:25:34.

together garments that have been hidden in storage, now taking centre

:25:35.:25:37.

stage. It opens to the public this Saturday.

:25:38.:25:41.

It looks truly stunning. Such elegant! It's like your section in

:25:42.:25:48.

the dressing room! Time for the weather.

:25:49.:25:53.

Feeling noticeably cooler today, add in that wind and not too pleasant at

:25:54.:26:02.

all but it was a mixed today, sunny spells and showers as we move

:26:03.:26:07.

through this afternoon. Some of those showers were quite heavy, they

:26:08.:26:16.

even fell as Hale. "Country There. This is what's going on in the

:26:17.:26:19.

bigger picture, this band of rain coming up from the West as we move

:26:20.:26:23.

into tomorrow, those isobars squeezing, so also quite breezy. As

:26:24.:26:30.

we move through this evening and overnight, a few showers to look out

:26:31.:26:33.

for, they could be quite heavy points and we will see it becoming

:26:34.:26:37.

increasingly drier into the early hours of a variable amount of cloud,

:26:38.:26:43.

turning cloudy into the early hours, it will be told again, overnight

:26:44.:26:46.

lows of four degrees, this band of rain sitting out in the wings,

:26:47.:26:49.

making its way in as we move into making its way in as we move into

:26:50.:26:57.

tomorrow. A fairly cold start the day, some brightness around,

:26:58.:26:59.

particularly further west, quite showery with heavy

:27:00.:27:06.

pulses with hail and sleet, temperatures still not doing too

:27:07.:27:13.

well. "Breezy. In the Thursday, that band of rain still with us, starts

:27:14.:27:16.

to clear towards the south. We will to clear towards the south. We will

:27:17.:27:22.

start to see high pressure building as we move into Friday and the

:27:23.:27:26.

weekend, temperatures not doing too badly by day but chilly at night.

:27:27.:27:32.

Do they know you have got this? I am worried you're going to drop it!

:27:33.:27:39.

They can have it back if they win the league! She will fill it with

:27:40.:27:42.

wine later!
