And now the news for the East Midlands, I'm Dominic Heale.

:00:12.:00:14.

First tonight, a seven-year-old died after communication between care

:00:15.:00:18.

The words of a coroner today after hearing the latest

:00:19.:00:25.

evidence into the death of Shanay Walker in 2014.

:00:26.:00:28.

Shanay's aunt and grandmother are currently serving prison

:00:29.:00:31.

terms for cruelty to her, after she was found to have

:00:32.:00:33.

The inquest into her death is into its second week,

:00:34.:00:39.

and today heard from care professionals that despite concerns

:00:40.:00:41.

for Shanay's welfare, her abusers were too readily

:00:42.:00:43.

It's thought at least ten safeguarding referrals were made

:00:44.:00:47.

But the inquest into her death is hearing about the missed

:00:48.:00:50.

opportunities for the professionals involved to work together.

:00:51.:00:52.

She was in the care of her aunt, Kay-Ann Morris, who was jailed

:00:53.:00:55.

for cruelty to Shanay, along with Shanay's

:00:56.:00:57.

1.5 weeks into this inquest, and we continue to hear that

:00:58.:01:04.

concerns were raised about Shanay Walker,

:01:05.:01:07.

The coroner, Mairin Casey, said there is evidence that

:01:08.:01:12.

information was withheld from the local authority

:01:13.:01:13.

Shanay's aunt, Kay-Ann Morris, was said to have dominated

:01:14.:01:19.

interviews with professionals, and persuaded them that the injuries

:01:20.:01:22.

were accidental, or even self-inflicted by Shanay.

:01:23.:01:28.

Shanay went to Southglade Primary School in Nottingham.

:01:29.:01:31.

Whilst safeguarding referrals were made, staff have been

:01:32.:01:34.

questioned about how effective procedures were at the school.

:01:35.:01:39.

Dr Emma Fillmore gave evidence in the criminal case,

:01:40.:01:41.

and spoke again today at the inquest.

:01:42.:01:44.

She is a consultant paediatrician, who wasn't involved with Shanay,

:01:45.:01:48.

but gave an overview for the inquest.

:01:49.:01:51.

She agreed there was a lot of significant information

:01:52.:01:53.

about Shanay that should have been acted upon.

:01:54.:01:58.

Referring to the aunt, Kay-Ann Morris, she said,

:01:59.:02:00.

"It's very concerning that Shanay does not feel she can talk to Kay

:02:01.:02:03.

about how she feels, when Morris is the person

:02:04.:02:06.

who is supposed to be carrying for her."

:02:07.:02:09.

The coroner said, "Communication channels failed miserably

:02:10.:02:11.

between the school, the local authority and health professionals."

:02:12.:02:16.

Giving evidence today was incontinence nurse Stephanie Joiner.

:02:17.:02:19.

She had concerns, and said, "On reflection, I should have

:02:20.:02:22.

She could not explain why she didn't.

:02:23.:02:28.

The aunt, Kay-Ann Morris, was allowed to bring

:02:29.:02:30.

so-called spiritual guardians to meetings with professionals.

:02:31.:02:33.

They were her friends who backed up what she said.

:02:34.:02:37.

Simon Ward, BBC East Midlands Today, Nottingham.

:02:38.:02:43.

The number of people out of work in the East Midlands has gone up again.

:02:44.:02:47.

That's despite figures nationally showing an overall fall.

:02:48.:02:50.

Statistics from October to December show that a 114,000 people

:02:51.:02:54.

That's 6,000 more than the previous quarter across the East Midlands,

:02:55.:03:01.

though the Government points out that more than two-and-a-quarter

:03:02.:03:04.

million people are in work - nearly a record figure.

:03:05.:03:09.

A mystery donor has given ?10,000 to a young girl who needs

:03:10.:03:12.

an operation after thieves stole a collection tin for her appeal.

:03:13.:03:19.

Nine-year-old Kareena Hayes from Long Eaton in Derbyshire has

:03:20.:03:21.

cerebral palsy and needs an operation to help

:03:22.:03:23.

A charity box raising funds for her was stolen from a caf

:03:24.:03:31.

Now an anonymous businessman's put up the money so that Kareena's

:03:32.:03:36.

A nursery had to be evacuated after a digger broke through a gas

:03:37.:03:44.

Firefighters set up a 50-metre cordon in Sneinton, and up to 50

:03:45.:03:49.

Morning rush-hour, and traffic's brought to a standstill.

:03:50.:03:58.

A digger hit a low pressure gas main, causing a severe leak.

:03:59.:04:02.

Emergency services were called to deal

:04:03.:04:05.

with the possibility of an explosion.

:04:06.:04:07.

There was a very pungent, strong gas smell.

:04:08.:04:09.

First priority is, how dangerous is it?

:04:10.:04:11.

Because potentially I've got an explosion, and the explosion

:04:12.:04:15.

range could have been anything up to 80 metres.

:04:16.:04:18.

So my first priority was to evacuate the surrounding area.

:04:19.:04:20.

We have been working closely with the other emergency services,

:04:21.:04:23.

so it's been a joint emergency service project.

:04:24.:04:25.

About 50 homes and businesses were evacuated.

:04:26.:04:29.

So once we'd realised what we'd got, that's when the chaos started.

:04:30.:04:32.

And it was arranging that chaos to make it calm.

:04:33.:04:34.

And that's what we've done successfully.

:04:35.:04:37.

A sports session was due to take place on the playing fields over

:04:38.:04:41.

the road for around 90 children who are off school for half term.

:04:42.:04:44.

Among the first businesses to be evacuated was the nursery next

:04:45.:04:49.

It was breakfast time for around 25 children

:04:50.:04:54.

I literally left with no bag, nothing.

:04:55.:04:59.

I nearly walked out with my slippers on!

:05:00.:05:01.

So it was just getting the children out.

:05:02.:05:03.

We just put them into pushchairs and a cot, and we took them

:05:04.:05:09.

to a youth centre around the corner who kindly opened up

:05:10.:05:12.

for us so we could go in there and use the hall.

:05:13.:05:16.

Residents were allowed to return to their homes by mid-afternoon.

:05:17.:05:19.

The nursery should be open as normal tomorrow.

:05:20.:05:23.

The National Grid, which is responsible for the gas supply,

:05:24.:05:25.

said a temporary repair was done straightaway, and it has now carried

:05:26.:05:28.

Steve Orme, BBC East Midlands Today, Nottingham.

:05:29.:05:39.

A stretch of the A52 in Nottinghamshire is closed in both

:05:40.:05:42.

directions this evening after a serious collision.

:05:43.:05:44.

It's happened between the A46 near Saxondale and the A1 near Grantham.

:05:45.:05:49.

Police are currently at the scene, where a light column

:05:50.:05:52.

Both directions are closed, and drivers are being advised

:05:53.:05:57.

East Midlands Airport's had a 15% rise in the number of passengers

:05:58.:06:04.

Last month nearly 220,000 people travelled through the airport

:06:05.:06:07.

In the previous January, about 190,000 people used it.

:06:08.:06:15.

Airport managers hope new destinations and more flights

:06:16.:06:17.

on popular routes will deliver the airport's busiest ever summer.

:06:18.:06:25.

A Nottinghamshire MP's visiting Jordan, where she's gone to see how

:06:26.:06:27.

millions of Syrian refugees are living in freezing camps.

:06:28.:06:29.

Broxtowe MP Anna Soubry's travelling with a charity that's using British

:06:30.:06:33.

aid donations to keep victims of the war alive.

:06:34.:06:39.

She's gone to a large camp called Zaatari with the charity Oxfam.

:06:40.:06:44.

She spoke to us from there via internet link.

:06:45.:06:47.

This is basically like a great big piece of rubble.

:06:48.:06:51.

There is no vegetation - there's no trees, there's no

:06:52.:06:53.

But at the moment, the reality is it's going to be I think many

:06:54.:07:06.

Finally tonight, Sean Fitzpatrick from Loughborough barely

:07:07.:07:13.

He was too worried to go because of his health.

:07:14.:07:18.

But now, a new invention is enabling Charnwood's youngest diabetes

:07:19.:07:20.

For Sean Fitzpatrick, this monitor has changed his life.

:07:21.:07:30.

The device prompts him to press a button to show he's well.

:07:31.:07:34.

And if he misses a prompt, a family member or a warden are alerted.

:07:35.:07:39.

Hello, you are through to Emma at Charnwood Lifeline,

:07:40.:07:41.

Hello, I'm just checking my activity button and making

:07:42.:07:46.

Yes, that's come through perfectly fine.

:07:47.:07:49.

But if Sean needed help, an ambulance could be called.

:07:50.:07:56.

Sean has heart problems and type-one diabetes.

:07:57.:08:00.

He can fall unconscious if his blood sugar levels get too low.

:08:01.:08:05.

Before he had the device installed, life was very different.

:08:06.:08:08.

It's just made me more confident that I'm going to be found

:08:09.:08:11.

I'm not scared, I'm not petrified, which I used to be.

:08:12.:08:15.

The checks to make sure Sean is OK come from here -

:08:16.:08:19.

Sean, who is 41, is the only person in Charnwood with diabetes

:08:20.:08:23.

Normally, people think that this scheme is for older people,

:08:24.:08:29.

and it's more an emergency response service, you know, for falls

:08:30.:08:32.

And Sean's quite different because he's younger.

:08:33.:08:37.

But it shows that the service can be used for people

:08:38.:08:39.

1,700 people have signed up to the Lifeline Project in Charnwood.

:08:40.:08:45.

The Council offers a 24/7 response, 365 days per year.

:08:46.:08:48.

Just under ?4 per week for each household.

:08:49.:08:55.

It gives him a bit more lease of life.

:08:56.:08:57.

Because we haven't got to keep checking up on him,

:08:58.:09:00.

and he hasn't got to ring us and say, oh, I'm going out.

:09:01.:09:03.

A big change, because he's outgoing now and suchlike.

:09:04.:09:05.

I feel comfortable knowing that somebody will find me

:09:06.:09:11.

I feel that I can try and keep my sugars as low as I possibly can.

:09:12.:09:15.

It just makes me feel happy, it makes me feel

:09:16.:09:18.

Sean is now looking forward to spending more time out

:09:19.:09:21.

of his flat, with his family and his new baby niece.

:09:22.:09:25.

Helen Astle, BBC East Midlands Roday, Leicestershire.

:09:26.:09:31.

But with your weather now, here's Lucy.

:09:32.:09:39.

Thank you, and good evening. Well, it was a grey and wet and to the

:09:40.:09:45.

day-to-day. Our weather watchers still went out though and sent us

:09:46.:09:50.

this photo, sent by Pete in Leicestershire, lots of cloud and

:09:51.:09:55.

rain. The good news, as we go into tomorrow, we will see brighter

:09:56.:09:59.

spells. It will be largely dry, but we could see world to show us. Here

:10:00.:10:03.

is what is good going on in the bigger picture. We have high

:10:04.:10:09.

pressure building income it will be increasingly settled as we move

:10:10.:10:15.

towards Friday. Through tonight, we have cloud around, that front is

:10:16.:10:19.

clearing out to the east. Clearer spells in the mix, largely dry,

:10:20.:10:23.

temperatures falling to an overnight low of around 5-6 C, a bit chilly of

:10:24.:10:29.

an last night, but mild enough not to have a frost first thing. We

:10:30.:10:34.

could see patches of mist and fog, which left quickly. Turning slightly

:10:35.:10:41.

cloudy in the afternoon, temperatures in double figures, with

:10:42.:10:44.

a south-westerly breeze. Into Friday, that is the high pressure

:10:45.:10:49.

building up from the south. It looks like it will be a largely settled

:10:50.:10:53.

and dry day, with one or two patches of fog first thing. The best the

:10:54.:10:58.

sunny spells the further east you going. It will be mild towards the

:10:59.:11:01.

weekend. Up the weekend. Wouldn't promise you

:11:02.:11:04.

two dry days but you never know, here is Nick with the national

:11:05.:11:06.

picture. Hello. We put that cold weekend well

:11:07.:11:11.

behind us now. Temperatures edging upwards and our weather watchers are

:11:12.:11:15.

seeing plenty of signs of spring. Spending more time looking down than

:11:16.:11:19.

looking up at the skies, we see these early blooms. They are set to

:11:20.:11:22.

continue as we are set to stay mild for several more days to come.

:11:23.:11:26.

Average daytime temperature this time of year around eight, but

:11:27.:11:29.

getting into double figures all the way through the weekend. The start

:11:30.:11:36.

of next week into the mid-teens potentially, very mild indeed. It

:11:37.:11:40.

was 14 in Lincolnshire today. A lot of heavy rain to end the day. That

:11:41.:11:43.

clearing from Yorkshire to the North Sea. A few showers in the west and

:11:44.:11:46.

the odd one may continue into the night. Many becoming dry, just this

:11:47.:11:54.

rain still into western parts of Scotland gusty winds. Lighter winds

:11:55.:11:57.

to the south, a few fog patches and the coldest rural spots may pick up

:11:58.:12:01.

a touch of frost. For Thursday, low

:12:02.:12:02.
