And now the news for the East Midlands, I'm Emily Anderson. | :00:16. | :00:17.
First tonight, one of the region's most colourful characters says | :00:18. | :00:21.
being beaten up and robbed by two men on his rounds | :00:22. | :00:23.
David Bartram from Nottingham is one of the UK's few | :00:24. | :00:29.
Medical checks after the attack revealed something | :00:30. | :00:34.
David didn't know - that he had cancer. | :00:35. | :00:36.
Our health Correspondent Rob Sissons has been finding out | :00:37. | :00:41.
how being mugged has given him the chance | :00:42. | :00:43.
to get the crucial medical treatment he needs. | :00:44. | :00:45.
I'm called the Cockle Man or the Fish Man by everybody in Nottingham! | :00:46. | :00:48.
But recently, walking between pubs in Nottingham city centre, | :00:49. | :00:53.
he says he was punched and pushed to the ground. | :00:54. | :00:56.
If they had been in front of me, I could have done | :00:57. | :00:59.
Rib injuries and they still hurt now. | :01:00. | :01:03.
Even in pain, he has kept up the job. | :01:04. | :01:09.
He says, in a strange way, the attackers have | :01:10. | :01:12.
His medical check revealed bowel cancer. | :01:13. | :01:16.
I didn't want it, I could have done without the pain, | :01:17. | :01:20.
Now 70, David is determined to keep working, to take his mind not only | :01:21. | :01:26.
off the disease but also continue a pub tradition. | :01:27. | :01:31.
I've got a dog myself, and four walls. | :01:32. | :01:34.
Nottingham people wanted me to do it. | :01:35. | :01:40.
I do it for Collecting for Rainbows charity. | :01:41. | :01:43.
David has not yet reported the attack to the police. | :01:44. | :01:46.
He believes his cancer has been caught early but is awaiting | :01:47. | :01:48.
He's struggling to make sense of why he was targeted. | :01:49. | :01:53.
Because Nottingham people wouldn't do that to me. | :01:54. | :02:00.
Well, tonight, Dave's back at work here at | :02:01. | :02:02.
He says this has been a really strange way to find out | :02:03. | :02:07.
because he had no symptoms of the disease. | :02:08. | :02:11.
He says anyone who is offered a test should take it up. | :02:12. | :02:19.
There's been an armed raid on a Leicestershire | :02:20. | :02:20.
Police say two men threatened staff and customers at the Shepshed branch | :02:21. | :02:27.
of the Nottingham Building Society, with what appeared to be a shotgun. | :02:28. | :02:31.
It happened at around one o'clock this afternoon. | :02:32. | :02:33.
No one was hurt but the robbers escaped with cash. | :02:34. | :02:38.
Severn Trent says a major route in Derby will remain closed | :02:39. | :02:41.
until next Tuesday after a major water main burst. | :02:42. | :02:46.
It happened on Mansfield Road in Chester Green last weekend - | :02:47. | :02:50.
There have been long traffic delays across the city as a result. | :02:51. | :02:55.
Severn Trent says the road closure's lasted longer than expected | :02:56. | :02:58.
Next tonight, fire services across the East Midlands are urging | :02:59. | :03:06.
Firefighters say they're having to deal with hundreds | :03:07. | :03:11.
Derbyshire Fire Service training in Alfreton today. | :03:12. | :03:19.
But at any moment, these officers may have to rush to an emergency, | :03:20. | :03:22.
It's frustrating that some fires aren't accidents | :03:23. | :03:30.
Fire officers hope people will be on the lookout | :03:31. | :03:33.
We stand ready to respond 24 hours a day. | :03:34. | :03:38.
Clearly we can't be in two places at once. | :03:39. | :03:40.
So whilst we are dealing with the deliberately ignited car | :03:41. | :03:43.
or pile of rubbish or a disused building, then we're not | :03:44. | :03:46.
immediately available for house fires and the like, | :03:47. | :03:49.
Arson can be just pointless destruction. | :03:50. | :03:55.
People also set fires to illegally claim on insurance. | :03:56. | :04:00.
Since April last year, Derbyshire Fire Service had to deal | :04:01. | :04:02.
There were more than 950 in Leicestershire. | :04:03. | :04:08.
And in Nottinghamshire, close to 1500. | :04:09. | :04:10.
That means there are around nine deliberate fires | :04:11. | :04:13.
The authorities are also keen for people to spot situations that | :04:14. | :04:18.
As well as the potential loss of life, 60% of businesses never | :04:19. | :04:28.
recover or close within three years of being deliberately set on fire. | :04:29. | :04:35.
The ?2 million renovation of one of our finest churches | :04:36. | :04:38.
The parish church of St Mary's in Melton Mowbray closed | :04:39. | :04:43.
When it re-opens later this year, one of the centre-pieces will be | :04:44. | :04:48.
as James Roberson's been finding out. | :04:49. | :04:58.
At his studio in Medbourne in East Leicestershire, | :04:59. | :05:00.
Derek Hunt is at work on his latest commission, a new stained-glass | :05:01. | :05:03.
window he has designed force and Mary's Church in Melton. | :05:04. | :05:05.
It is currently closed while a ?1.9 million | :05:06. | :05:07.
renovation takes place including relaying the floor. | :05:08. | :05:13.
The church currently has this plain window and Derek has created | :05:14. | :05:15.
a modern design but the working method is anything but. | :05:16. | :05:18.
Basically, stained-glass is a medieval process and we're | :05:19. | :05:20.
making it the same way medieval craftsmen made it centuries ago. | :05:21. | :05:24.
It's a system that was devised in the 12th century and it has | :05:25. | :05:27.
The colour is in the glass itself and then the paint is put | :05:28. | :05:37.
onto the surface of the glass and then fired in the kiln. | :05:38. | :05:40.
Those behind the church's restoration are delighted | :05:41. | :05:43.
with the way the new window is shaping up. | :05:44. | :05:45.
It is in memory of John Plumb, who left money for the refurbishment. | :05:46. | :05:58.
the benefactor wanted us to update to the history of Melton Mowbray, so | :05:59. | :06:06.
we have Jerusalem here. You have a fox, relating to fox hunting and | :06:07. | :06:10.
Stilton cheese and pork pie. You have the bird, that is lower down | :06:11. | :06:13.
with a paintbrush, indicating painting the town red, which comes | :06:14. | :06:18.
from Melton Mowbray. Derek and the congregation | :06:19. | :06:20.
at Saint Mary's are looking forward to the church and the new window | :06:21. | :06:22.
being completed this autumn. I'll leave you with Rebecca Wood who | :06:23. | :06:25.
has the weekend's weather forecast. Well, the clocks are going for this | :06:26. | :06:29.
weekend and it's Mothering Sunday. Well, the clocks are going | :06:30. | :06:35.

skies, our temperatures Some mist and fog patches developing | :06:51. | :06:52.
here and there but we are looking at our temperatures dipping down | :06:53. | :06:57.
to two or three Celsius. We start the day with that | :06:58. | :06:59.
high-pressure still sitting The wind is dropping out, | :07:00. | :07:02.
though, so that's going A little bit of mist and fog | :07:03. | :07:05.
lingering through the morning but eventually the sun will come up, | :07:06. | :07:09.
burning that off, and it will be a dry and bright day | :07:10. | :07:12.
with lots of lovely sunshine. Still a bit of a breeze | :07:13. | :07:14.
along the coast, so that will affect temperatures, | :07:15. | :07:17.
just 10 Celsius there, but we should see them climbing | :07:18. | :07:19.
to 13 Celsius further inland. More sunshine to come | :07:20. | :07:21.
as we head through the day on Mothering Sunday and, | :07:22. | :07:24.
