That's all from the BBC News at Six so it's | :00:00. | :00:27.
Families here are pulling together to help those in the Philippines. It | :00:28. | :00:34.
will feel colder tomorrow with some strong north`westerly winds. | :00:35. | :00:48.
We are live in Shanghai where it is to 30 AM. Tonight we are the guests | :00:49. | :00:58.
of International Channel Shanghai. This is their studio. Why Shanghai | :00:59. | :01:03.
and what has got to do with us? The answer is what happens in China and | :01:04. | :01:08.
Shanghai and how it touches most of our lives every day. Everything from | :01:09. | :01:12.
the food we eat to the smartphones we buy. In a moment, three companies | :01:13. | :01:17.
making good money here but let us start by getting a feel for this | :01:18. | :01:24.
breast for this breathtaking city. This is the best`known part of | :01:25. | :01:27.
Shanghai on the banks of the River. It flows down into the Yangtze | :01:28. | :01:36.
River. This is where old Shanghai meets modern Shanghai. The buildings | :01:37. | :01:41.
behind me are in the British style and state back from the days of the | :01:42. | :01:47.
British Empire. If we look across to the other side of the river, 20 | :01:48. | :01:53.
years ago it was farmland. Now look at it. Modern and expensive | :01:54. | :01:57.
buildings. A land of opportunity and ambition. Our Chief Reporter reports | :01:58. | :02:03.
on three companies from the East doing very well in the Far East. | :02:04. | :02:14.
In a Victorian factory in Northamptonshire, skilled craftsmen | :02:15. | :02:22.
at work. They have been making shoes since 1886 and do it the | :02:23. | :02:27.
old`fashioned way. A pair of shoes would cost you ?300. That sort of | :02:28. | :02:32.
price isn't putting off a new breed of well`heeled Chinese consumer. The | :02:33. | :02:37.
Chinese are buying into our heritage and buying into the fact that it is | :02:38. | :02:41.
made in England and with it comes a confidence that is high`grade and | :02:42. | :02:47.
well crafted for wear. Two years ago, they didn't sell in China at | :02:48. | :02:52.
all but the company hopes it will be one of their biggest export markets. | :02:53. | :02:56.
Sales have shot up and they have taken on more staff. In | :02:57. | :03:01.
Cambridgeshire, a very different company is looking east. Ten macro | :03:02. | :03:06.
designs that clever bits for computers and mobile phones. `` | :03:07. | :03:11.
Mohammed Safdar `` ARM. China is crucial. There are a lot of | :03:12. | :03:20.
businesses there. We have 150 people in China and it is about being close | :03:21. | :03:25.
to the business opportunity and being close to our Chinese partners. | :03:26. | :03:31.
It can feel like one`way traffic. Containers come to Britain packed | :03:32. | :03:34.
with consumer bids and too often they return full of fresh air. The | :03:35. | :03:40.
picture is changing. Imports to the East of England from China were down | :03:41. | :03:44.
6% over the previous 12 months. We export less but the numbers are | :03:45. | :03:50.
improving. 8% up year on year. Another 50 miles down the road is | :03:51. | :03:58.
this recycling company in Ipswich. This is scrap aluminium heading to | :03:59. | :04:02.
Shanghai to be melted down. China takes more than 40% of the world's | :04:03. | :04:07.
aluminium and copper so the economies of scale are huge. There | :04:08. | :04:14.
will come a point where they will consume and produce their own | :04:15. | :04:18.
material. You are looking at 15 to 20 years. In the meantime, we fill | :04:19. | :04:25.
our boots. Cheap Chinese imports have taken their toll on British | :04:26. | :04:29.
industry but as these three companies show, we are learning how | :04:30. | :04:35.
to export. One of the companies we heard from was ARM. It is a big | :04:36. | :04:43.
success story and the company has a base in Shanghai. They were selling | :04:44. | :04:48.
24 million computer ships in China and this year it will be more than a | :04:49. | :04:54.
billion. According to the President of ARM, the company is serious about | :04:55. | :05:00.
being a force around the world. If you look at our business, it is a | :05:01. | :05:05.
global business. You have got to be able to understand what the customer | :05:06. | :05:08.
needs and make sure you understand how the model is to be developed, | :05:09. | :05:14.
especially in a fast market. Give me an idea as people will have no idea | :05:15. | :05:24.
what ARM does. Where will we find your products? One good analogy is | :05:25. | :05:30.
they are like the parts of an engine. You could be using it for | :05:31. | :05:35.
your boat, your car, your trucks or your aeroplanes. You may not see ARM | :05:36. | :05:40.
being stamped across the aeroplanes but what is running it is running on | :05:41. | :05:46.
us. We are becoming the factor standard for the Electra stash for | :05:47. | :05:51.
the industry. ARM is powering one third of every electronic device in | :05:52. | :05:56.
the world when now. I know you have worked in many different parts of | :05:57. | :06:02.
the world. How does working in China compare? China is trying to comprise | :06:03. | :06:09.
a development into a 20 year cycle. Everything is on a faster pace. The | :06:10. | :06:14.
challenge for a company like us is how do we make sure we are | :06:15. | :06:19.
responsive to responding to the market and making sure we help the | :06:20. | :06:27.
customer to fall knocked into the traps of running too fast? The | :06:28. | :06:30.
second challenge is the culture is different. I do find the culture | :06:31. | :06:39.
aspect is very positive for ARM. The role we play is enabling these | :06:40. | :06:48.
Chinese products to run faster and better. Looking forward, do you see | :06:49. | :06:55.
ARM as always being based in Cambridge or make it move to | :06:56. | :07:00.
somewhere else? My belief is it will always be in Cambridge for several | :07:01. | :07:06.
reasons. It is the tradition and heritage part but today, it is a | :07:07. | :07:11.
global business. It is not so much so your headquarters of physically | :07:12. | :07:18.
located, it is the mentality. Looking at the opportunities coming | :07:19. | :07:23.
in the future, 75% of consumption will be coming from the emerging | :07:24. | :07:30.
countries rather than the established world. It is important | :07:31. | :07:35.
that when we look at our future strategy, we make sure we take | :07:36. | :07:40.
advantage of that and make sure ARM continues to be the standard for our | :07:41. | :07:45.
New World. It is the number`1 thing for. Thank you. The best way to | :07:46. | :07:54.
appreciate Shanghai by night is to come to the roof of the television | :07:55. | :07:57.
studios and looked down on the traffic around the roads. In the | :07:58. | :08:03.
distance, we can see some of the best`known buildings. The one with | :08:04. | :08:06.
the spheres on it is the Oriental Pearl, a television and radio tower. | :08:07. | :08:13.
Past those banks, past the one with a crown are sitting on the top and | :08:14. | :08:18.
you will come round to the building with the dome on the top. The | :08:19. | :08:27.
building means gold prosperity. The blue one is sometimes called the | :08:28. | :08:31.
bottle opener and that is the world financial Centre. That gives you an | :08:32. | :08:36.
idea of the skyline of Shanghai. Early in the programme I told you | :08:37. | :08:40.
about the amount of Chinese investment into businesses in our | :08:41. | :08:43.
region. Everything from British water companies to household names | :08:44. | :08:49.
like Weetabix. They are based in Northamptonshire and 80 months ago | :08:50. | :08:53.
they were brought by a company based here in Shanghai. | :08:54. | :09:04.
Every week of every year, half a million boxes of Weetabix roll off | :09:05. | :09:09.
the production line in Northamptonshire. The company has | :09:10. | :09:13.
come a long way since it was set up as the British and Africa cereal | :09:14. | :09:17.
company 81 years ago. For most of that time, it was a family business | :09:18. | :09:23.
taking its wheat from a 50 mile area around the factory. These days it is | :09:24. | :09:27.
a global business, exporting to 80 countries around the world. It is | :09:28. | :09:33.
owned by the Chinese. What the Chinese have brought to us is they | :09:34. | :09:37.
are great partners and are able to help us take our brands to China. We | :09:38. | :09:41.
are working with them and getting the brands like Weetabix and open | :09:42. | :09:48.
established in the local market. There is the challenge. The | :09:49. | :09:52.
traditional breakfast in China is hot noodles and dumplings. At this | :09:53. | :09:55.
trade fair company owners believe habits can be changed. TRANSLATION: | :09:56. | :10:04.
many access these products when they are studying abroad. Our habits are | :10:05. | :10:09.
changing. They are trying to eat healthily and don't just want to | :10:10. | :10:15.
feel for. If they succeed 70 million biscuits won't be enough. They will | :10:16. | :10:19.
need a factory in China but that doesn't mean the end of the road for | :10:20. | :10:24.
Northamptonshire. We will continue to make Weetabix and the UK brands | :10:25. | :10:29.
in the UK for the UK market. That is where our farmers are, are consumers | :10:30. | :10:34.
are and our customers. Our customers are incredibly important. As long as | :10:35. | :10:38.
our business is healthy in the UK, we will continue to make the brands | :10:39. | :10:42.
here. For now, these production lines will continue to work flat | :10:43. | :10:47.
out. It is the figure is here that are staggering. 1000 biscuits every | :10:48. | :10:52.
minute will go into these others and it will take them 20 minutes to be | :10:53. | :10:59.
baked fully and they will come out. The process and the recipe have | :11:00. | :11:04.
changed very little down the years. It is the business model that is | :11:05. | :11:10.
changing. That is it from showing how `` Shanghai for now. We will be | :11:11. | :11:16.
back with another moneyspinner from the eastern is education. Thousands | :11:17. | :11:21.
of Chinese students come to our region bringing millions of pounds | :11:22. | :11:23.
with them. We'll have the details on that after the news from your part | :11:24. | :11:25.
of the region. Hello. More now on the aftermath of | :11:26. | :11:32.
the typhoon in the Philippines. The region's Filippino community are | :11:33. | :11:34.
organising fundraising events to help family and friends whose lives | :11:35. | :11:38.
have been devastated. Lily Matthews from Norfolk finally managed to make | :11:39. | :11:42.
contact with a relative in the Philippines today. The news she | :11:43. | :11:52.
heard wasn't good. My brother was missing. Lily's family were caught | :11:53. | :11:57.
in the typhoon and devastated their lives and probably killed her | :11:58. | :12:01.
brother. Today, she finally got through to her cousin. She told me | :12:02. | :12:09.
that people are going on the top of the rocks to survive. My brother, | :12:10. | :12:19.
no. He could not climb. You don't think he has survived? No. I am sure | :12:20. | :12:25.
he did not survive. Her great nephews and nieces are still busy. | :12:26. | :12:29.
They were in one of the worst affected areas. There is no way you | :12:30. | :12:36.
can get hold of your family? There is no communication at all. For now, | :12:37. | :12:45.
Lily and her granddaughter can watch events unfold half a world away. Is | :12:46. | :12:52.
there anything you can do? I ask for help from somebody. Yesterday, my | :12:53. | :13:08.
neighbour gave me some money. I have had money from the neighbours and I | :13:09. | :13:12.
have sent money to the Philippines. There is a strong Filipino community | :13:13. | :13:19.
here in the East of England. Ie finding support from each other? | :13:20. | :13:24.
They are very supporting. They are very friendly. At the moment, it is | :13:25. | :13:32.
a waiting game? It is a waiting game. It is very hard, very | :13:33. | :13:36.
difficult. The parents of a missing teenage | :13:37. | :13:39.
girl from Colchester say they just want to know she's safe. Ella Hysom, | :13:40. | :13:43.
who's 15, vanished on Monday from a hospital near London where she was | :13:44. | :13:51.
being treated for depression. She has been missing for more than two | :13:52. | :13:55.
days and Ella Hysom's parents are growing desperate. Ella, please get | :13:56. | :14:04.
in contact. We love you so much. You are so loved by all friends and | :14:05. | :14:09.
family. This was the last image of her walking out of a hospital in | :14:10. | :14:13.
Essex on Monday afternoon. She was later seen heading towards the | :14:14. | :14:19.
cinema but then vanished. If anyone who she is with can contact any of | :14:20. | :14:23.
the helpline is with can contact any of the helplines anonymously and let | :14:24. | :14:28.
us know she is safe. Ella is deputy head girl at her school in | :14:29. | :14:31.
Colchester but for the last six weeks she has been treated for | :14:32. | :14:36.
depression. I appeal for anyone who knows her to have any information | :14:37. | :14:40.
about any places she frequents or goes to. The hunt for Ella has been | :14:41. | :14:46.
intensified and for her parents, it only brings more anguish. | :14:47. | :14:49.
A witness has told a jury in Chelmsford how she heard a fellow | :14:50. | :14:52.
airline passenger threaten to kill a flight attendant. Mohammed Safdar | :14:53. | :14:55.
and Tayyab Subhani deny a charge of endangering an aircraft. The flight | :14:56. | :14:59.
from Lahore to Manchester was diverted to Stansted after the | :15:00. | :15:07.
alleged threats were made. Firefighters across our region were | :15:08. | :15:11.
on strike again today. It's the fourth time they've taken action in | :15:12. | :15:14.
their dispute with the government over changes to their pensions. | :15:15. | :15:19.
Lowestoft Fire Station, 10am. The crews here were taking part in a | :15:20. | :15:24.
four hour stoppage forcing the brigade to make contingency plans to | :15:25. | :15:29.
provide cover. The dispute is over fire `` retirement age. The | :15:30. | :15:33.
government wants them to work up to 60 years old but they say that is | :15:34. | :15:37.
too old for what they have to do. We protect what we have. It is our duty | :15:38. | :15:43.
to do that. We are legally entitled to take industrial action to protect | :15:44. | :15:49.
our pay and conditions. The Fire Minister says that is not fair on | :15:50. | :15:52.
the taxpayer and says union fears member crew `` members could lose | :15:53. | :15:57.
their jobs if they fail fitness tests. They have a great pension of | :15:58. | :16:02.
a ?29,000 salary with a ?19,000 pension. It is one of the most | :16:03. | :16:10.
generous out there. Control rooms took fewer than 20 calls during | :16:11. | :16:14.
today's stoppage and none of the incidents were described as serious. | :16:15. | :16:18.
That's all from me. Now it's back to Stewart in Shanghai. | :16:19. | :16:31.
Welcome back to China where we are the guests of International Channel | :16:32. | :16:39.
Shanghai. We've talked about business, now education. Like almost | :16:40. | :16:52.
all of our universities, the University of East Anglia attracts | :16:53. | :16:55.
students from China. We'll hear from two of them in a moment. But first | :16:56. | :16:59.
let's take a closer look at the numbers. In East Anglia, they have | :17:00. | :17:08.
1300 students out of a total student population of 15,000. The fees they | :17:09. | :17:18.
pay add up to ?18 million a year. If you add what they spend on living | :17:19. | :17:21.
here, that's about ?30 million going into the local economy. The numbers | :17:22. | :17:25.
of Chinese students studying in this region has been rising steadily. | :17:26. | :17:30.
Just over 3,500 in 2002, up to almost 6,000 in 2012. | :17:31. | :17:40.
Jesse's English is so good because you studied in England. What did you | :17:41. | :17:48.
study? Economics. I didn't have many Chinese friends with me in economic | :17:49. | :17:53.
school because most of them are gathered in business school and | :17:54. | :17:57.
doing business`related subjects like banking and finance. I believe they | :17:58. | :18:01.
are going for broader choices like media related and environment | :18:02. | :18:06.
related. You had a good time? I had a very good time. What is life like | :18:07. | :18:16.
the students? We have been to meet two of them at the University of | :18:17. | :18:17.
East Anglia. I am 21 years old and doing science | :18:18. | :18:34.
at the University of East Anglia. She arrived here in September and | :18:35. | :18:37.
was homesick at first but is now settling in. This is my room. The | :18:38. | :18:44.
room seemed on the small side but the combination is a step up from | :18:45. | :18:48.
the University in Shanghai. She studied there for two years and will | :18:49. | :18:59.
now do two years here. The UK had experience. It is successful and I | :19:00. | :19:11.
can learn some basic knowledge and advanced technology here. I am | :19:12. | :19:23.
studying science. The subject is still in its infancy in China and | :19:24. | :19:27.
she believes she can benefit from our experience. She talks to her | :19:28. | :19:43.
mother, a judge in the city. Problems for the Chinese students | :19:44. | :19:47.
appear to be few but language can be an issue. Can you understand the | :19:48. | :19:55.
lectures OK? At the beginning, no. I knew some keywords that now it has | :19:56. | :20:03.
improved a lot here. They are making friends and enjoying life in 04 was | :20:04. | :20:10.
`` in Norfolk. They are thinking about many careers. Both believe two | :20:11. | :20:15.
years as an English university is going to be good for their futures. | :20:16. | :20:25.
One of those students started at the University of... The two | :20:26. | :20:28.
universities have built up strong links. This man here, Professor | :20:29. | :20:32.
Trevor Davies has played a part in that. Let us have a quick look at | :20:33. | :20:41.
the University here. It has about 50,000 students and it is one of the | :20:42. | :20:46.
top five universities in China. On one campus, the product of a tie`up | :20:47. | :20:54.
between universities in Shanghai and East Anglia. This specialist is | :20:55. | :21:03.
looking into low Carbon buildings. Low turbine that wind turbines and | :21:04. | :21:09.
solar energy is strong in this area. We can share some opinions and | :21:10. | :21:14.
achievements in the low Carbon buildings. For Professor Davies, | :21:15. | :21:19.
this is a work in process `` progress. The links between the two | :21:20. | :21:26.
very different universities look set to grow stronger. Professor Davies | :21:27. | :21:33.
is here now. Thank you for getting up in the middle of the night. How | :21:34. | :21:38.
did this link upstart? We wanted to raise our profile for the | :21:39. | :21:44.
recruitment of students and a link and partnership at a top class | :21:45. | :21:49.
university here would be useful. Also, because China is such an | :21:50. | :21:53.
important player in climate change, we wanted to develop a deep | :21:54. | :21:57.
partnership around climate change research. How receptive have the | :21:58. | :22:05.
Chinese bean? The `` the Chinese are aware of the role it is plain. It is | :22:06. | :22:10.
the largest of the carbon dioxide global warming gases. The emissions | :22:11. | :22:16.
are increasing at the rate of 9% a year. At the same time, it is doing | :22:17. | :22:26.
a lot with renewable energy. It's renewable energy capacity is the | :22:27. | :22:30.
greatest in the world and it is going to spend something like ?250 | :22:31. | :22:37.
billion on renewable electricity generation in the next 20 years. | :22:38. | :22:42.
That growth will exceed that of the United States, Japan and Europe | :22:43. | :22:47.
combined. The emissions are growing because the economy is going | :22:48. | :22:53.
straight up. It is. The rate of urbanisation and industrialisation | :22:54. | :22:58.
in this country is tremendous. We should remember that 30% of China's | :22:59. | :23:04.
carbon dioxide emissions are actually consumed in the West | :23:05. | :23:10.
through the goods that China makes here but are brought and consumed in | :23:11. | :23:16.
Europe and the US. They are using a lot of power. It is very | :23:17. | :23:25.
spectacular. Not as spectacular as it was five years ago. They have | :23:26. | :23:32.
toned it down. Your students, they are coming over to study in East | :23:33. | :23:36.
Anglia as well. What is the ambition there? The ambition is to increase | :23:37. | :23:46.
the capacity of Chinese universities, Chinese students in | :23:47. | :23:52.
the area of climate change. Education is increasingly | :23:53. | :23:56.
international anyway. Though students will be coming back from | :23:57. | :23:59.
the University of East Anglia and will spread the message here. They | :24:00. | :24:06.
will take over your role. Education is increasingly international. | :24:07. | :24:09.
Research on climate change is international. If our students have | :24:10. | :24:15.
had a good time in East Anglia, they come back here and they would be | :24:16. | :24:21.
excellent ambassadors and they are excellent ambassadors. Economic | :24:22. | :24:25.
league, it is a very important part of university life. It is, very | :24:26. | :24:32.
important economically. It is the fact that university education is | :24:33. | :24:37.
international. You like living here, do you? It is a very exciting city | :24:38. | :24:45.
and changes daily. As long as you don't get in a taxi cab and go for a | :24:46. | :24:50.
ride. It is scary. Thank you for being with us. Now for the weather. | :24:51. | :25:00.
Temperatures got to 17 Celsius in Shanghai today but is colder here | :25:01. | :25:07.
after a frosty spot `` frosty start. The temperatures climbed to 10 | :25:08. | :25:14.
Celsius. After all the sunshine we have experienced today, things are | :25:15. | :25:22.
starting to change. This evening, for most of us, it is dry but | :25:23. | :25:26.
gradually this weather front will bring us some outbreaks of rain. | :25:27. | :25:30.
This looks like it will be mainly light and patchy. There will be some | :25:31. | :25:36.
showers following on behind and some clear skies developing. There is a | :25:37. | :25:40.
good deal of cloud and a strong wind developing which will mean it is | :25:41. | :25:44.
unlikely to be frosty tonight. Temperatures will be higher than | :25:45. | :25:52.
last night. We start tomorrow with quite a strong wind. It will be | :25:53. | :25:55.
coming from a north`westerly direction as this weather front | :25:56. | :25:58.
pulls away. That will make it feel quite a bit colder. Temperatures | :25:59. | :26:03.
will be similar to where they get today and we will notice the | :26:04. | :26:07.
difference. A little bit of cloud to clear first thing but what a lot of | :26:08. | :26:12.
sunshine expected. Parts of the north`east corner of North and | :26:13. | :26:15.
coastal parts will be vulnerable to one or two coastal showers. Across | :26:16. | :26:21.
the region, quite a bit of cold weather. Top temperature of nine | :26:22. | :26:26.
Celsius. The strength of that wind will continue, gradually easing into | :26:27. | :26:29.
the evening and overnight with some fierce guys developing. High | :26:30. | :26:32.
pressure develops and that will mean a colder night for tomorrow. We are | :26:33. | :26:44.
into high`pressure and it will mean a fine day foot Friday `` a fine day | :26:45. | :26:54.
for Friday. We have a cold night for tomorrow night with the risk of | :26:55. | :26:58.
frost. Into the weekend, it is looking largely dry. We are | :26:59. | :27:03.
vulnerable to one or two showers but those temperatures are slightly | :27:04. | :27:11.
milder overnight. That is the weather from me. Back to Stewart in | :27:12. | :27:13.
Shanghai. That is a fortnight our sincere | :27:14. | :27:23.
thanks to everybody here for their hard work tonight and from looking | :27:24. | :27:31.
after us so well during our stay. Tomorrow, we have tips for people | :27:32. | :27:35.
wanting to build a close relationship with China. From all of | :27:36. | :27:38.
us here in Shanghai, goodbye. | :27:39. | :27:42. |
