Much more throughout the evening on the BBC News channel. We are | :00:00. | :00:12.
Hello. I'm Tom Williams. Part of the centre of Bedford was | :00:13. | :00:20.
sealed off today as crews tackled a big fire. It broke out in an office | :00:21. | :00:24.
block and took firefighters nearly ten hours to put out, as Ben Bland | :00:25. | :00:26.
reports. 30 firefighters worked through the | :00:27. | :00:30.
night to tackle this fire in the old town hall in Bedford. They were | :00:31. | :00:33.
called at 3am. By then, it had spread across three floors. Some | :00:34. | :00:36.
surrounding streets remained closed into this afternoon. The fire was | :00:37. | :00:40.
fairly quickly knocked down from the outside of the building but because | :00:41. | :00:44.
of the size and complexity of the building, and the fact that it | :00:45. | :00:47.
presents some risk to us because it is under demolition, progress was | :00:48. | :00:50.
then slow and cautious to make sure the fire was fully out. The 1960s | :00:51. | :00:57.
office block is derelict and due to be demolished. But if the fire had | :00:58. | :01:03.
not been brought under control, it could have damaged neighbouring | :01:04. | :01:06.
buildings. Yes, I mean either side of this building we have really | :01:07. | :01:08.
important buildings that we are keeping, they're not being | :01:09. | :01:11.
demolished. And thank God for the firefighters who put their lives on | :01:12. | :01:14.
the line and put themselves in harm's way to make sure that it was | :01:15. | :01:19.
put out safely and no one was hurt. These buildings were protected. The | :01:20. | :01:22.
building has no electricity or gas connected. An investigation will now | :01:23. | :01:25.
look at whether this fire was started deliberately. | :01:26. | :01:30.
A man wanted over the shooting of a traveller near Stevenage has been | :01:31. | :01:33.
arrested in Denmark. The victim, Thomas Ward, died from a gunshot | :01:34. | :01:36.
wound to the chest at a caravan site in Dyes Lane last April. His second | :01:37. | :01:40.
cousin, John Boy Ward, was arrested near Copenhagen on suspicion of | :01:41. | :01:47.
conspiracy to commit murder. There are still 25 flood warnings in | :01:48. | :01:51.
force in the region, with the prospect of more rain to come | :01:52. | :01:54.
overnight. Rivers in several areas, including here on the Suffolk`Essex | :01:55. | :01:57.
border, are still swollen. The Environment Agency says it's keeping | :01:58. | :02:02.
an eye on water levels. The Suffolk MP Tim Yeo says the | :02:03. | :02:05.
Conservative party is increasingly dominated by activists with extreme | :02:06. | :02:09.
views on Europe and gay marriage. The member for South Suffolk was | :02:10. | :02:12.
deselected by his local party this week. He's told the Daily Telegraph | :02:13. | :02:17.
that the Tories should not be letting UKIP dictate their agenda. | :02:18. | :02:21.
And there'll be more on this in Sunday Politics tomorrow morning on | :02:22. | :02:26.
BBC One at 11am. In the football today, an unexpected | :02:27. | :02:29.
but excellent point for Norwich against Manchester City. It ended | :02:30. | :02:33.
goalless at Carrow Road. Gary Hooper had a first half goal disallowed for | :02:34. | :02:37.
Norwich and while the visitors dominated possession, the Canaries | :02:38. | :02:40.
had two phenomenal chances to win it late on. But neither Ricky van | :02:41. | :02:42.
Wolfswinkel nor Anthony Pilkington could convert. Norwich remain two | :02:43. | :02:47.
points clear of the Premier League drop`zone. We are playing a team | :02:48. | :02:51.
that can score goals as readily, almost, as what they want to. But | :02:52. | :02:56.
also, I think it's the manner in which we finished the game. It | :02:57. | :03:00.
wasn't one where we sat back didn't look for opportunities ourselves. We | :03:01. | :03:03.
ended up getting into two very good positions very, very late in the | :03:04. | :03:07.
game and of course, positions that could have seen us win the game. | :03:08. | :03:12.
In the Championship, Ipswich scored twice in the last ten minutes to | :03:13. | :03:16.
earn a draw at Barnsley. Christophe Berra on 81 then David McGoldrick's | :03:17. | :03:19.
free`kick three minutes later means Town close the gap on the play`off | :03:20. | :03:24.
places to just three points. Result of the day in League One for | :03:25. | :03:27.
Peterborough. Britt Assombalonga and Tommy Rowe scored twice in the final | :03:28. | :03:31.
three minutes to claim a 2`1 win. Posh back in the play`offs. | :03:32. | :03:34.
Colchester and Stevenage's games were off. | :03:35. | :03:37.
While MK Dons claimed a much needed win at Walsall. Izale McLeod scored | :03:38. | :03:40.
twice. Not a good day in League Two. | :03:41. | :03:43.
Defeats for Southend and Northampton. Ryan Leonard scored the | :03:44. | :03:46.
Blues' goal. The Cobblers now cut adrift at the | :03:47. | :03:50.
bottom, seven points from safety. Just underway in the rugby ` | :03:51. | :03:53.
Northampton playing Exeter. Saints could go top of the | :03:54. | :03:56.
Premiership tonight after leaders Saracens slipped up at home to | :03:57. | :03:59.
London Irish. No score just yet. Bedford lost in the Championship, | :04:00. | :04:07.
going down 32`19 against Bristol. Time for the weather, with Georgina | :04:08. | :04:09.
Burnett. Good evening. I'm afraid it's going | :04:10. | :04:13.
to be a wet and windy night for some of us tonight. We have got some of | :04:14. | :04:17.
those heavy showers but also a strong south`westerly wind | :04:18. | :04:19.
continuing. So these showers pushing north eastwards through the night. | :04:20. | :04:23.
For some of us not so bad but fairly heavy in parts. In those strong | :04:24. | :04:26.
winds not particularly pleasant, with temperatures down to four or | :04:27. | :04:31.
five Celsius. Now tomorrow, not so much in the way of sunshine. We are | :04:32. | :04:35.
fairly spoiled in some parts today. The best of the sunshine will be in | :04:36. | :04:39.
the afternoon. We've also got some more showers and the strong winds | :04:40. | :04:42.
continue. Temperatures reaching six or seven Celsius tomorrow. Now, | :04:43. | :04:48.
Monday morning ` ice may be an issue as it is going to be a cold start to | :04:49. | :04:52.
the day, particularly with saturated ground. Tuesday and Wednesday, we | :04:53. | :04:56.
have got some more wet and windy weather on the way. | :04:57. | :04:59.
That's it from me. We're back tomorrow at 5:50pm and 10:15pm. Till | :05:00. | :05:00.
then, have a good night. Good evening. Unfortunately I don't | :05:01. | :05:17.
have much good news in this forecast. There may be a brief | :05:18. | :05:21.
respite later tomorrow with the wind and the rain but it will not be long | :05:22. | :05:24.
enough and we have today's storm withers, pounding many coastlines in | :05:25. | :05:29.
the south and west, hence the Amber wind warning from the Met Office. It | :05:30. | :05:33.
is a windy day across the board and it is not just the wind that is a | :05:34. | :05:35.
concern. | :05:36. | :05:37. |
