to British coastlines, with winds of up to 80 mph. That's all from | :00:00. | :00:07.
Hello and welcome to programme`macro. Up to 2`macro | :00:08. | :00:14.
inches of rain and winds gusting up to 60 mph, increasing. The | :00:15. | :00:21.
sentencing begins Joanna Dennehy and the man dash`macro the men who | :00:22. | :00:26.
helped her. We will be here later with the Tornado jets in the Thames | :00:27. | :00:31.
Valley, how the RAF is helping to map the floods. The highs and lows | :00:32. | :00:36.
of professional sport, why fans in Northampton do not know whether to | :00:37. | :00:45.
laugh or cry. First tonight, the weather warnings in place for wind | :00:46. | :00:48.
and rain as the latest storm affects the region. The Met Office has | :00:49. | :00:51.
issued amber and yellow warnings saying there could be up to two | :00:52. | :00:56.
inches of rain and gusts of up to 60 miles an hour. Tonight is usually | :00:57. | :00:59.
one of the busiest travel nights of the year as most schools have | :01:00. | :01:03.
started half term. Ben Bland has the latest on the weather and joins me | :01:04. | :01:14.
now. The rain has been falling steadily through the afternoon and | :01:15. | :01:17.
the early part of the evening and the wind at the minute is not too | :01:18. | :01:22.
bad, but we are expecting it to pick up from 8pm. This, people are still | :01:23. | :01:36.
dealing with the aftermath from last week as another storm sweeps across | :01:37. | :01:41.
are part of the country. Exactly one week ago, this woman walk up to find | :01:42. | :01:46.
her home flooded, the day her house was being sold. She looked out to | :01:47. | :01:52.
find her street had become a river. Everything was in boxes, it has all | :01:53. | :02:00.
been ruined. Worse was to come. By 10am I should have exchange | :02:01. | :02:05.
contracts, but the people buying my house found out what had happened, | :02:06. | :02:10.
so they came down, came in on Saturday afternoon and they said, it | :02:11. | :02:18.
is not too bad. Then they did ring and say they were backing out. A few | :02:19. | :02:24.
doors down, her neighbour showed us how badly his home had been | :02:25. | :02:30.
affected. The flood water may have gone, but look at the furniture | :02:31. | :02:35.
which was damaged. He was not just affected, look over the fence, in | :02:36. | :02:40.
the front garden, hundreds of pounds worth of furniture which was | :02:41. | :02:47.
damaged. As the resident still tried to dry out their homes, more heavy | :02:48. | :02:51.
rain and strong winds are arriving this evening. The winds will | :02:52. | :02:58.
continue to increase tonight. Not quite as strong in | :02:59. | :03:01.
Northamptonshire, but Cambridge will get the worst. Given how saturated | :03:02. | :03:07.
the grounders, trees could come down and cause disruption. This Friday, a | :03:08. | :03:14.
busy time on the roads, PA 14 was already slow moving this afternoon | :03:15. | :03:18.
as the highways agency braces itself for disruption. We have increased | :03:19. | :03:25.
staff levels and we are ready to do with anything that happens. If there | :03:26. | :03:30.
is debris, we can deal with that we will monitor the traffic situation, | :03:31. | :03:35.
if we get a lot of congestion, we can inform travellers and they can | :03:36. | :03:40.
perhaps delay their journey. In Luton, a desperate attempt to stop | :03:41. | :03:43.
the pitch getting waterlogged in the hope that the match tomorrow go | :03:44. | :03:49.
ahead. We have had a couple of postponements and at the end of the | :03:50. | :03:52.
day, we want to play football, so we have brought in this cover, brought | :03:53. | :03:58.
it down from Glasgow yesterday. Other parts of the country may be | :03:59. | :04:03.
hit harder, but there is no shortage of rainfall here. The winds are | :04:04. | :04:10.
expected to pick up as the evening and the night goes on, are parked | :04:11. | :04:16.
dash`macro across parts of the country, gusts of up to 60 mph are | :04:17. | :04:21.
expected. One of the big concerns is the effect it will have on | :04:22. | :04:26.
transport, on the roads, police are telling us that a tree has fallen | :04:27. | :04:32.
down on one road in Cambridge. No injuries, but it is causing | :04:33. | :04:40.
congestion. Another stretch of road has been closed due to an accident. | :04:41. | :04:44.
On the railways, ticket restrictions have been lifted. Airports are | :04:45. | :04:51.
operating as normal, but check with your airline. This is one of the | :04:52. | :04:56.
busiest nights for travel, the start of half term, if you're venturing | :04:57. | :05:04.
out, take it easy, go a bit slower. Serial killer Joanna Dennehy | :05:05. | :05:06.
appeared in court today for the beginning of her sentencing hearing. | :05:07. | :05:10.
In the dock alongside her were the three men who helped her. At one | :05:11. | :05:13.
point, Dennehy told the court she was not sorry for having killed | :05:14. | :05:16.
three men. Our Home Affairs Correspondent Sally Chidzoy was at | :05:17. | :05:27.
Cambridge Crown Court. This was the first time Joanna Dennehy has been | :05:28. | :05:31.
seen in court since she pleaded guilty last November to the three | :05:32. | :05:35.
murders in Peterborough and 2`macro at attempted murders in Hereford. | :05:36. | :05:39.
Brought to the court for sentencing, her barrister said his client | :05:40. | :05:46.
'spos`macro offending was that the high`end of the criminal scale. | :05:47. | :05:49.
Joanna Dennehy sat at the back of the dark away from her accomplices | :05:50. | :05:56.
who were all on the front row, surrounded by security officers She | :05:57. | :06:01.
appeared calm, relaxed and often smiled as she and Gary Stretch | :06:02. | :06:05.
leaned towards each other and exchanged words. The court was told | :06:06. | :06:11.
that she accepted she had behaved in a volatile way and she had | :06:12. | :06:15.
manipulated men. Her barrister said it was her case that she was not in | :06:16. | :06:20.
sexual relationships with the men, she stabbed to death her friend | :06:21. | :06:24.
Lukasz Slaboszewski, John Chapman and landlord Kevin Lee, who she made | :06:25. | :06:30.
where a black dress before he died. Then unexpectedly, Joanna Dennehy | :06:31. | :06:34.
spoke out about Kevin Lee. In a raised voice, she told the court | :06:35. | :06:39.
there was no sexual interference, it is hearsay. I was going to assault | :06:40. | :06:43.
him in a dress, I put him in a dress, it was humiliation, pure and | :06:44. | :06:48.
simple, there was nothing sexual about it. Just as she was leaving | :06:49. | :06:55.
the court in handcuffs, that was the second outburst. In the presence of | :06:56. | :06:58.
victims's relatives, she said she wanted everyone to know, I am sorry | :06:59. | :07:01.
for the attempted murders, but I am not sorry for the murders. | :07:02. | :07:05.
Sentencing will be later this month at the Old Bailey. A man has been | :07:06. | :07:11.
convicted today of the murder of a Northampton coin collector last | :07:12. | :07:14.
July. Mark Ellson, who's 41 and of no fixed address, was found guilty | :07:15. | :07:17.
of the killing of Guiseppe Micheli, who was known as Joe. He was found | :07:18. | :07:21.
dead at his home in Bants Lane in Duston. He'd suffered head injuries. | :07:22. | :07:29.
A driver has been left with a fractured skull after a road rage | :07:30. | :07:32.
attack in Bedfordshire. The incident happened on Wednesday afternoon on | :07:33. | :07:35.
the slip`road at Junction 11 of the M1. Both drivers got out of their | :07:36. | :07:38.
cars after stopping at the traffic lights, where a fifty four year old | :07:39. | :07:48.
man was hit over the head. It appears that this was a random | :07:49. | :07:53.
attack, possibly done out of road rage and the victim was just on his | :07:54. | :07:58.
way home. The next thing you know, he is being attacked and has an | :07:59. | :08:03.
nasty head injury. Look East has learnt that the police have been | :08:04. | :08:06.
called in to investigate allegations of fraud within the Luton South | :08:07. | :08:09.
Labour Party. It comes just a fortnight after the party launched | :08:10. | :08:12.
an enquiry into allegations of membership irregularities. Our | :08:13. | :08:15.
political correspondent, Andrew Sinclair is in our newsroom and | :08:16. | :08:25.
joins me now. So what's the latest? Bedfordshire police confirmed today | :08:26. | :08:28.
that they are investigating what they call historical allegations of | :08:29. | :08:32.
electoral fraud relating to postal voting. I understand that this | :08:33. | :08:37.
relates to the 2011 local elections in Luton, but sources in the party | :08:38. | :08:42.
had said that the allegations may stretch back over many more years. | :08:43. | :08:46.
The police started working on this yesterday, they have been handed | :08:47. | :08:50.
documents and are going through them to assess the strength of the | :08:51. | :08:55.
allegations. How did this all come to light? We reported that Labour | :08:56. | :09:01.
had launched an enquiry following a Sunday Politics programme which | :09:02. | :09:05.
discovered there was an ease in the local party about membership | :09:06. | :09:08.
packing, were a couple of members get dozens more members to join the | :09:09. | :09:12.
party so they can influence candidate selections. Labour say | :09:13. | :09:17.
that as a result of that enquiry, a small number of members alleged | :09:18. | :09:20.
potential criminal activity and we told them to So, is this linked to | :09:21. | :09:26.
the previous allegations about membership irregularities? Go to the | :09:27. | :09:31.
police. No. That is an internal party member. We understand that | :09:32. | :09:35.
that enquiry has concluded that there was no wrongdoing in Luton | :09:36. | :09:38.
South. That will supply is a few people in the local party, what we | :09:39. | :09:42.
are talking about today is an allegation of fraud. Staying with | :09:43. | :09:51.
politics and the region's oldest and longest`serving MP has been | :09:52. | :09:54.
re`selected to stand at the next General Election. Members of the | :09:55. | :09:56.
Saffron Walden Conservative Assoication decided by an | :09:57. | :09:59.
overwhelming majority last night to back Sir Alan Haselhurst. He'll be | :10:00. | :10:02.
77 at the next election. Some members had suggested it might be | :10:03. | :10:11.
time for someone younger. And there's more on our Sunday Politics | :10:12. | :10:14.
show, looking at the future of Surestart children's centres and | :10:15. | :10:17.
council cuts. That's Sunday, BBC One at 11 o'clock. Choosing the | :10:18. | :10:24.
healthiest items to go in your shopping trolley isn't always | :10:25. | :10:26.
straightforward. Now Cambridge researchers have been involved in | :10:27. | :10:28.
developing a smartphone app that reveals how good a product is for | :10:29. | :10:32.
you. It comes as the government is trying to improve the clarity of | :10:33. | :10:35.
food labelling. Louise Hubball reports. But it comes to choosing | :10:36. | :10:49.
the healthiest option, the supermarket can be a confusing | :10:50. | :10:52.
place. There seems to be so many labels, so many choices and so | :10:53. | :11:00.
little time. Imagine an app were a quick scan of the bar code can | :11:01. | :11:05.
reveal not only add nutritional breakdown, but suggestions of what | :11:06. | :11:13.
may be better for you. The food switch app has been developed with | :11:14. | :11:18.
the Cambridge `based government funded research centre. What it does | :11:19. | :11:23.
is offer you a quick and easy way of reading the food labels and offering | :11:24. | :11:29.
you a really quick solution to finding those healthier | :11:30. | :11:35.
alternatives. Around 80,000 supermarket products are stored on | :11:36. | :11:38.
the database and it is already a success in Australia and New Zealand | :11:39. | :11:41.
and developers hope it will take off here. Is this a black`and`white | :11:42. | :11:49.
issue? What do shoppers make of it? I would not use it personally. I | :11:50. | :11:58.
like junk food! I do not like people telling me what I should and | :11:59. | :12:04.
shouldn't eat. It is a good idea. When you pick things up, you forget | :12:05. | :12:09.
what is in it. I would like to know what is in my food. The app is free | :12:10. | :12:14.
and the team responsible say it is impartial. We wanted to make clear | :12:15. | :12:21.
that the developers behind it have been developing labelling in the UK | :12:22. | :12:24.
and we are doing this for the benefit of customers. While the app | :12:25. | :12:32.
compares healthier options, in these challenging times, it does not | :12:33. | :12:46.
compare price. Later Dan is here with the weather and that | :12:47. | :12:48.
an officer had accidentally turned on a back`up system which left the | :12:49. | :12:56.
main controls useless. The ferry was holed below the water line. No one | :12:57. | :13:00.
was injured in the crash. Covers have now been put over back`up | :13:01. | :13:03.
control buttons so they can't be pressed by mistake. | :13:04. | :13:06.
Still to come: From M S to the NHS. One of the biggest names in | :13:07. | :13:09.
retailing helps out our hospitals. Plus the town that's top of the | :13:10. | :13:13.
table and bottom of the league at the same time! | :13:14. | :13:22.
This region has been doing its bit to help parts of the country like | :13:23. | :13:25.
Somerset and the Thames which have been hit hardest by the flooding. | :13:26. | :13:29.
Our Fire Services have sent rescue teams, farmers have sent animal feed | :13:30. | :13:32.
and troops have been filling sandbags. Now though, the help has | :13:33. | :13:37.
turned hi`tech. It came in the shape of a Tornado jet from RAF Marham in | :13:38. | :13:40.
Norfolk. It has been taking high resolution aerial pictures of the | :13:41. | :13:43.
flooding on the River Thames. Very recently those same cameras have | :13:44. | :13:47.
been used to monitor the Taliban in Afghanstan. These photographs are | :13:48. | :13:49.
being used by the emergency services to plan the relief operations. This | :13:50. | :14:03.
photo of the Thames Valley was taken by an RAF jet at 15,000 feet. It was | :14:04. | :14:12.
out for three hours and managed to cover 150 square kilometres. It's | :14:13. | :14:18.
used very rarely in the UK but is used extensively in Afghanistan. The | :14:19. | :14:27.
differences are minimal. It operates in the same way. RAF Marham usually | :14:28. | :14:34.
fly these jets over warzones, taking photos and gathering intelligence. | :14:35. | :14:43.
This week its mission has been over home territory. We can see where's | :14:44. | :14:49.
flooded, where's not flooded, and where is at risk. We can pass that | :14:50. | :14:54.
down to the ground, or civilian authorities. The photos show the | :14:55. | :15:04.
extent of the flooding around the Thames Valley. The water is at its | :15:05. | :15:08.
highest level in 60 years. The information will be used to move | :15:09. | :15:16.
sandbags and other resources. The operation has involved more than 100 | :15:17. | :15:27.
RAF personnel. It was a real effort but everybody's very invested in | :15:28. | :15:35.
trying to assist wherever we can. We were doing that alongside our other | :15:36. | :15:42.
operations. The base will continue to analyse the photos over the | :15:43. | :15:45.
weekend. It could be used in future flooding operations. | :15:46. | :15:56.
One of the biggest names in British retailing has been brought in by the | :15:57. | :16:00.
NHS to help some of our struggling hospitals. Sir Stuart Rose turned | :16:01. | :16:03.
around the fortunes of Marks Spencer but now he'll be offering | :16:04. | :16:05.
leadership advice to the 14 hospitals across England which are | :16:06. | :16:11.
in "special measures". Here in the east there are three ` King's Lynn, | :16:12. | :16:14.
Colchester and Basildon, where the Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt | :16:15. | :16:16.
launched the programme with Sir Stuart. The man who ran M has a | :16:17. | :16:25.
lot to learn about hospitals. Sir Stuart Rose met staff yesterday in | :16:26. | :16:34.
Basildon. Alongside the Health Secretary, he heard about changes | :16:35. | :16:39.
being made. The hospital is one of those put into special measures | :16:40. | :16:43.
after concerns about care. It's a world away from his retail | :16:44. | :16:48.
background. But he says he can bring people skills to the table. You | :16:49. | :16:56.
depend on people every day to do their job properly, do their job | :16:57. | :17:01.
skilfully... In the case of customers in a store, it's about | :17:02. | :17:04.
goods and services. Here, it's about the right service, prompt service. | :17:05. | :17:12.
Sir Stuart is someone who uses the NHS. He doesn't have private health | :17:13. | :17:19.
insurance. He's committed. But turning round hospitals is a huge | :17:20. | :17:28.
task. It's not a gimmick. I'll be judged on my success in turning them | :17:29. | :17:32.
around. Leadership comes up time and again as one of the critical issues. | :17:33. | :17:38.
Basildon has hired more staff, and care is improving. The hospital is | :17:39. | :17:42.
now run by a former nurse, who believes the NHS faces different | :17:43. | :17:48.
challenges from businesses. Sometimes we have less freedom than | :17:49. | :17:58.
an independent business. Our priority is not about the bottom | :17:59. | :18:01.
line ` important though that is, it's about the health and safety of | :18:02. | :18:04.
patients. The health union UNISON warned the NHS is fundamentally | :18:05. | :18:07.
different to retail, with patients turning to the health service when | :18:08. | :18:17.
they were at their most vulnerable. Sport now, and there can't be many | :18:18. | :18:21.
places with a club at the top of the league and another at rock bottom. | :18:22. | :18:25.
With a tale of one town and two teams... Here's Tom. | :18:26. | :18:28.
Yes, if you're a Saints fans you're on top of the world. If it's the | :18:29. | :18:31.
Cobblers for you, then Saturday afternoons have been rather gloomy. | :18:32. | :18:34.
Northampton's rugby players are fighting to be crowned Premiership | :18:35. | :18:36.
champions. The football team scrapping to stay in the Football | :18:37. | :18:39.
League. Every point will matter to both sides in the closing stages of | :18:40. | :18:43.
the season as our Sports Editor Jonathan Park reports. Northampton | :18:44. | :18:47.
has a rich and varied sporting landscape. In fact, no other town in | :18:48. | :18:50.
England contains professional rugby, football and cricket teams. But if | :18:51. | :18:55.
you're a Saints or Cobblers fan, your viewing experience has been | :18:56. | :19:00.
very different this season. Northampton Town have sacked a | :19:01. | :19:03.
manager, are bottom of the league and their status as a Football | :19:04. | :19:07.
League club is in doubt. But everything is going to plan for | :19:08. | :19:10.
Northampton Saints. They're top of the Premiership, in a cup semifinal | :19:11. | :19:13.
and supplying England with a number of players. I've followed many ups | :19:14. | :19:22.
and downs. We've fallen at the final fence before. But we're growing in | :19:23. | :19:33.
confidence. We're going well. It's depressing following the football at | :19:34. | :19:38.
the moment. We win so few. We don't score. We concede bucketloads. It's | :19:39. | :19:45.
a disaster. Awful season. Saints have powered their way to the top of | :19:46. | :19:49.
Rugby Union's top flight. The Cobblers are football's basement | :19:50. | :19:54.
boys ` 92 out of 92. But a crucial midweek win against Torquay has | :19:55. | :20:07.
fired them up. Goal! It was new manager Chris Wilder's first victory | :20:08. | :20:12.
in charge. 17 cup finals to go. Whether it goes into the last ten | :20:13. | :20:18.
seconds of a game... So long as we're still in there... We'll give | :20:19. | :20:26.
it all. Saints' loss is England's gain. They're still on for a treble. | :20:27. | :20:34.
Something the Cobblers can only dream of. We want them to stay up, | :20:35. | :20:38.
obviously. It's great having them about. This town is a good sporting | :20:39. | :20:42.
town, with football, rugby and cricket. Top or bottom, different | :20:43. | :20:50.
battles lie ahead. The audience awaits for the final episodes of | :20:51. | :21:01.
this Northampton drama. In football, no game for Norwich | :21:02. | :21:05.
this weekend so there's some respite for boss Chris Hughton whose job is | :21:06. | :21:08.
coming under mounting pressure. The club's Chief Executive David McNally | :21:09. | :21:11.
told BBC Radio Norfolk he's watching the situation carefully and is aware | :21:12. | :21:15.
of the fans' concerns. He admits performances have been encouraging | :21:16. | :21:18.
despite the club boasting just one win in 11 Premier League games. He | :21:19. | :21:22.
also insists Hughton has their support with the manager still | :21:23. | :21:25.
positive he can keep them up. Norwich are one point clear of the | :21:26. | :21:31.
drop`zone. Now one team who'd dearly love to | :21:32. | :21:34.
trade places with Norwich are Ipswich. Town are just three points | :21:35. | :21:40.
off the play`offs with 16 games to go. They're at home to Blackpool | :21:41. | :21:44.
tomorrow knowing that with the top five looking nailed on, there's | :21:45. | :21:47.
going to be quite scrap to finish sixth. It's that type of league ` as | :21:48. | :21:51.
easy as you win three, you can lose three. We just keep plugging away | :21:52. | :21:55.
and try to be consistent. Hopefully by May we'll have done enough to be | :21:56. | :22:01.
in the top six. And there's some football tonight in | :22:02. | :22:21.
League One. Here are the fixtures. Olympic champion Greg Rutherford | :22:22. | :22:24.
makes his first appearance of the season indoors in Birmingham | :22:25. | :22:26.
tomorrow. The long jumper from Milton Keynes is joined by Bedford's | :22:27. | :22:29.
Nigel Levine, Andrew Osagie from Harlow, hurdler Will Sharman and | :22:30. | :22:33.
Robbie Grabarz in the high jump. For Rutherford, no chance to ease | :22:34. | :22:35.
himself into competition. He's up against the three medallists from | :22:36. | :22:38.
last summer's World Championships. He's been out with injury. That's | :22:39. | :22:52.
it. Check out the website. Let's go back to our main story now | :22:53. | :22:56.
` the strong wind and rain which have been sweeping across most of | :22:57. | :22:59.
the region today. It's the weekend and the start of the half`term | :23:00. | :23:03.
holidays, so what can we expect over the next few days? A question I put | :23:04. | :23:06.
to Adrian Gosling from the Environment Agency headquarters in | :23:07. | :23:09.
Peterborough. The rain's started to come through already. People have | :23:10. | :23:14.
seen a band of rain already. The rivers are going to react. We advise | :23:15. | :23:20.
people near the big rivers to be aware and log on to the websites. We | :23:21. | :23:29.
have a big region with a lot of rivers in it. Is Essex the main | :23:30. | :23:38.
trouble spot? What other areas are you concerned about? Everybody needs | :23:39. | :23:45.
to be aware. Those people who experienced high levels last Friday | :23:46. | :23:49.
will experience similar levels. They need to be aware and alert. Are you | :23:50. | :23:57.
expecting things to calm down after the weekend? After tonight. But | :23:58. | :24:09.
people shouldn't relax. It can take three to five days for water to go | :24:10. | :24:14.
through certain river systems. People need to be alert to that. | :24:15. | :24:24.
Especially when they're out. Take care. We're talking about the water | :24:25. | :24:30.
but there will be high winds too. Does that have a knock`on effect? | :24:31. | :24:38.
Yes. People near the coast need to be aware. There will be big waves at | :24:39. | :24:50.
the coast and slightly higher than normal tides. I advise people to be | :24:51. | :24:53.
cautious and careful. Thank you. Time for the weather. Here's the | :24:54. | :25:28.
radar picture. The Met Office have an amber warning out. Gusts of 50, | :25:29. | :25:37.
60, even 70 miles an hour. Trees could be uprooted. Inland, we are | :25:38. | :25:47.
widely covered by a yellow warning. The winds increase. Midnight to 3am | :25:48. | :26:03.
will be the wildest. Temperatures are actually rising. Eventually down | :26:04. | :26:16.
to six or seven Celsius. Tomorrow will still be windy. Saturday will | :26:17. | :26:28.
be windy, with a mixture of sunny spells. Gusts of 40 to 50 miles an | :26:29. | :26:38.
hour. They'll ease down progressively. Quite mild, actually. | :26:39. | :26:48.
Showers gradually pull away to the east. Tomorrow night it will be dry. | :26:49. | :27:00.
Perhaps a touch of frost on Sunday. Much better day then overall. The | :27:01. | :27:11.
next weather front eventually comes in. It may take till late in the day | :27:12. | :27:26.
till it reaches our region. Here's the projection. | :27:27. | :27:31. |
