Good food production in the region be hampered by Brexit? | :00:15. | :00:27.
And Storm Doris is expected to bring strong winds across the region | :00:28. | :00:31.
tomorrow. Join me at the end of the programme for the details. | :00:32. | :00:34.
Police said he preyed on a wealthy widow and lied to everyone, | :00:35. | :00:42.
and today Ian Stewart was found guilty of killing Royston | :00:43. | :00:44.
During a six-week trial at St Albans Crown Court, | :00:45. | :00:48.
the jury heard how Mr Stewart reported his fiancee missing, | :00:49. | :00:51.
when in fact he had drugged her, smothered her and hidden her body | :00:52. | :00:54.
It took them just six hours to find him guilty of her murder. | :00:55. | :00:59.
The moment the police caught up with Ian Stewart. | :01:00. | :01:09.
Anything you do say may be given in evidence... | :01:10. | :01:11.
Arrested early in the morning in dressing gown, slumped | :01:12. | :01:13.
on the stairs in the home he shared with Helen Bailey. | :01:14. | :01:20.
My partner has been missing since Monday. | :01:21. | :01:28.
This the voice of a killer as he calmly reported Helen Bailey | :01:29. | :01:31.
I think Ian Stewart is a particularly wicked and cynical man. | :01:32. | :01:48.
He has lied to us, his own family and the family of Helen Bailey | :01:49. | :01:51.
throughout this enquiry and made it very challenging for us | :01:52. | :01:54.
All along Helen's body was here, beneath the garage | :01:55. | :01:57.
Sedated, suffocated, possibly still alive, | :01:58. | :01:59.
Ian Stewart drop her and Boris, her much-loved dog, down inside. | :02:00. | :02:02.
At their home officers questioned him about the day Helen disappeared. | :02:03. | :02:06.
After weeks of drugging her with his sleeping pills he killed her. | :02:07. | :02:18.
After weeks of drugging her with his sleeping pills he killed her. | :02:19. | :02:24.
Just hours after the murder, CCTV captured Ian Stewart | :02:25. | :02:31.
This is a man Helen Bailey called her gorgeous grey-haired widower, | :02:32. | :02:39.
she fell for him after her husband of 23 years, John Sinfield, | :02:40. | :02:42.
She first wrote a blog and then the book about her grief. | :02:43. | :02:50.
My name is Helen Bailey and I would like to introduce | :02:51. | :02:53.
you to my new book, which is called When Bad Things Happen | :02:54. | :02:56.
Subtitled, Life After Death And A Dog Called Boris. | :02:57. | :03:02.
In the summer of 2013 she moved to Royston | :03:03. | :03:04.
When she was reported missing, her neighbour frantic with worry... | :03:05. | :03:09.
Words can't convey what I feel about him. | :03:10. | :03:28.
You know, I look at her house and the garage where she was found | :03:29. | :03:33.
everyday and instead of seeing Helen that I used to see, knowing | :03:34. | :03:38.
when she finished writing and went to bed at night, | :03:39. | :03:41.
I'm now just have these awful memories of what | :03:42. | :03:48.
Police today confirmed they will be examining the death | :03:49. | :03:55.
of Stuart's late wife, Diane. | :03:56. | :03:56.
She died after having an epileptic seizure in the garden of their home. | :03:57. | :04:01.
There is no suggestion that she died of anything other | :04:02. | :04:04.
than natural causes, but of course it will be part | :04:05. | :04:07.
of our enquiries moving forward from this conviction. | :04:08. | :04:12.
After a six-week trial the jury took just six hours | :04:13. | :04:17.
to convict Ian Stewart of betraying his new partner's love | :04:18. | :04:22.
and trust in the most brutal way possible. | :04:23. | :04:28.
So what drives an outwardly loving fiance like Ian | :04:29. | :04:30.
Earlier I asked criminal psychologist, Dr Samantha Lundrigan, | :04:31. | :04:35.
if this kind of partner killing is particularly rare. | :04:36. | :04:37.
Cases unfortunately of female partners being killed by their male | :04:38. | :04:39.
I think in 2015 50% of women who were killed | :04:40. | :04:45.
were killed by partners or ex-partners. | :04:46. | :04:46.
a very premeditated and planned instrumental crime where in fact | :04:47. | :04:53.
the murder was kind of instrumental or incidental to the goal, | :04:54. | :04:55.
which it seems, to all intents and purposes, to have | :04:56. | :04:58.
Police described him a narcissistic and selfish. | :04:59. | :05:05.
Obviously being after someone's money is a selfish act, | :05:06. | :05:09.
but what more will they mean by that term narcissistic? | :05:10. | :05:15.
Well, right from the start it is clear there was only one | :05:16. | :05:18.
person that mattered in this, from the investigation starting, | :05:19. | :05:20.
There was no regard for his victim, his victim's family, his own family, | :05:21. | :05:24.
other people involved, right the way up until today | :05:25. | :05:27.
when the verdict came out, Stewart was claiming to be innocent | :05:28. | :05:29.
and giving us this elaborate story that it was somebody else's | :05:30. | :05:32.
fault and with no regard for anybody else's killings. | :05:33. | :05:47.
He put her body in a cesspit, a horrible thing, at the | :05:48. | :05:49.
It may be to the individual but more likely is that was | :05:50. | :05:54.
thought of in terms of not being discovered and he may well have | :05:55. | :06:04.
thought that environment may have helped destroy any forensic evidence | :06:05. | :06:06.
that might have been there that would have linked him to the crime. | :06:07. | :06:16.
What will he be thinking now he has been found out, found guilty? | :06:17. | :06:19.
I wonder if he may actually be thinking he is the victim. | :06:20. | :06:22.
The role he was playing in this, he has convinced himself in some | :06:23. | :06:25.
ways he may have been entitled to that money and even though | :06:26. | :06:30.
he created the story and ruse to get away with it, | :06:31. | :06:34.
actually, it is not fair he did not, and actually he is the victim. | :06:35. | :06:41.
I know in court today there was a bit of the shake | :06:42. | :06:44.
of the head when the verdict was read out. | :06:45. | :06:46.
Again, that does not strike me as someone filled with remorse | :06:47. | :06:49.
and regret for what they have done but, again, only Ian Stewart | :06:50. | :06:52.
Next tonight - a warning that the region's farmers | :06:53. | :06:55.
could struggle to produce enough food if Brexit leads | :06:56. | :06:58.
Today landowners and farmers have been to Westminster, | :06:59. | :07:01.
urging MPs to safeguard the supply of migrant labour. | :07:02. | :07:03.
A rainy day on this Cambridgeshire farm. | :07:04. | :07:11.
But even today Svetoslav is hard at work. | :07:12. | :07:16.
He is one of eight Eastern Europeans employed | :07:17. | :07:18.
permanently here, up to 20 others join them over the summer months. | :07:19. | :07:21.
The falling value of the pound is already making a difference. | :07:22. | :07:25.
I don't know how much exactly but I know | :07:26. | :07:33.
The same amount of work and you are going to take less money. | :07:34. | :07:39.
His crops, including potatoes and onions, | :07:40. | :07:52.
The industry is already struggling to recruit in this | :07:53. | :07:56.
country, so teams of seasonal migrant labourers | :07:57. | :07:58.
success, and he is already considering other options, just in | :07:59. | :08:01.
It does worry us and I believe, from the farming | :08:02. | :08:09.
perspective, we have got to invest in new | :08:10. | :08:11.
technology and particular in | :08:12. | :08:12.
We need to make use of more labour-saving and the use of | :08:13. | :08:17.
robotics in the field and our warehouses. | :08:18. | :08:19.
This afternoon the Government was asked for | :08:20. | :08:21.
confirmation about the status of both permanent and temporary foreign | :08:22. | :08:25.
The NFU, which represents farmers and rural | :08:26. | :08:38.
businesses, says they are critical to the industry's success and want | :08:39. | :08:41.
the Government to take note, given current recruitment problems. | :08:42. | :08:43.
Because we are already seeing and have evidence | :08:44. | :08:45.
through our surveys, we are seeing a shortfall in people | :08:46. | :08:48.
That was massively exacerbated after the | :08:49. | :08:50.
referendum, with the exchange rate and people feeling less welcome. | :08:51. | :08:53.
That ask has been in for some time now and we really do need an answer. | :08:54. | :08:56.
A Government spokesman told us supporting farmers will form an | :08:57. | :08:59.
important part of our exit from the EU and | :09:00. | :09:03.
the Prime Minister says she | :09:04. | :09:08.
wants to protect the status of EU national already living here. | :09:09. | :09:11.
We definitely do need the seasonal supply | :09:12. | :09:15.
of labour and access from | :09:16. | :09:19.
Europe and indeed also we need a seasonal agricultural workers | :09:20. | :09:22.
scheme, which is a scheme that used to exist | :09:23. | :09:24.
four years ago, which will give us global access to labour as well | :09:25. | :09:27.
Svetoslav remains positive and says he has a good life | :09:28. | :09:34.
The home of the Formula 1 British Grand Prix in Northampton | :09:35. | :09:42.
is no longer for sale, its owner has announced. | :09:43. | :09:44.
The British Racing Drivers Club said it has decided to | :09:45. | :09:47.
"shelve discussions about a sale" of Silverstone Circuit. | :09:48. | :09:48.
Potential investors including the Jaguar Land Rover group | :09:49. | :09:50.
and MotorSport Vision had previously shown interest. | :09:51. | :09:54.
The statement added the move is "not without risk". | :09:55. | :09:57.
And that's the late news from Look East. | :09:58. | :09:59.
I'll leave you with the weather from Alex. | :10:00. | :10:04.
Some fairly lively weather conditions over | :10:05. | :10:07.
At the moment, rather cloudy with further outbreaks | :10:08. | :10:15.
of rain through the night, with the wind picking up | :10:16. | :10:17.
from the south-west but remaining relatively mild with temperatures | :10:18. | :10:19.
only down to around Eight Celsius tonight. | :10:20. | :10:21.
Tomorrow, we start already quite windy. | :10:22. | :10:22.
Storm Doris moving in is expected to bring some damaging wind | :10:23. | :10:25.
gusts in the afternoon and we are in the amber | :10:26. | :10:28.
weather warning zone for the strength of winds, | :10:29. | :10:29.
with gusts of between 60-70 mph from about 3pm. | :10:30. | :10:32.
We start the day with some outbreaks of rain, some drier interludes | :10:33. | :10:34.
with the wind really picking up around the middle of the day coming | :10:35. | :10:38.
from the south-west initially but turning round to the north-west, | :10:39. | :10:40.
and this is when they will particularly be at their strongest. | :10:41. | :10:43.
So those are our average wind speeds, but gusts between 60-70 | :10:44. | :10:45.
miles an hour are possible during the evening rush hour. | :10:46. | :10:51.
The national weather is coming up here is the outlook, | :10:52. | :10:54.
and much calmer conditions by the end of the week. | :10:55. | :11:04.
some sunshine around and light winds. For more on Doris and its | :11:05. | :11:07.
impact, here is the national weather. | :11:08. | :11:11.
Good evening, a rough patch weather on the way. Time to fasten your seat | :11:12. | :11:18.
belt. A high wind warning from the Met office, an amber one, so pretty | :11:19. | :11:24.
severe. Let's see where Storm Doris is right now, only just developing | :11:25. | :11:27.
to the west of the UK, in its early stages which is not good because it | :11:28. | :11:31.
will be at its peak when it crosses the UK. You can see this hook of | :11:32. | :11:37.
cloud which is where the twisting is starting to happen, which is where | :11:38. | :11:40.
the big mid-latitude cyclone is starting to develop and it will slam | :11:41. | :11:44.
into the centre of the UK during the morning and move across the country | :11:45. | :11:48.
through the morning and into the afternoon. Two rounds from this | :11:49. | :11:51.
storm, we will see some snow across southern and central parts of | :11:52. | :11:53.
Scotland first | :11:54. | :11:54. |
