Now, time for the news where you are. | :00:00. | :00:00.
Foul play - the Peterborough men convicted of selling | :00:00. | :00:09.
Short-changed by the Budget - why little will have to go | :00:10. | :00:13.
a long way for Luton, Bedford and Northampton. | :00:14. | :00:17.
The four year old boy stuck under ultra-violet | :00:18. | :00:19.
Two men from Peterborough have been found | :00:20. | :00:33.
guilty of conspiring to commit fraud by telling businesses | :00:34. | :00:37.
they were selling them halal lamb meat when it was actually turkey. | :00:38. | :00:40.
Mahmudur Rohman and Kamal Rahman imported | :00:41. | :00:45.
They sold it to dozens of customers for almost double the price, | :00:46. | :00:50.
making a profit of hundreds of thousands of pounds. | :00:51. | :00:57.
Mahmudur Rohman and Kamal Rahman today found guilty of committing | :00:58. | :01:01.
They pocketed up to half a million pounds. | :01:02. | :01:05.
It was in a flat above this parade of shops that | :01:06. | :01:09.
Mahmudur Rohman ran his business. | :01:10. | :01:11.
Throughout 2013 until the end of October 2014, he bought | :01:12. | :01:16.
hundreds of tonnes of Turkey then resold | :01:17. | :01:18.
it to outlets across the country as lamb. | :01:19. | :01:20.
Not only was it not lamb, it was also not halal. | :01:21. | :01:29.
Meaning it was not slaughtered according to the Islamic faith. | :01:30. | :01:35.
So eating it was deeply offensive for Muslims. | :01:36. | :01:36.
For people, they felt angry, they know, it is not my fault. | :01:37. | :01:40.
We supply to restaurants, they are still with us, | :01:41. | :01:43.
they still buy from us but they even felt, how can somebody do this? | :01:44. | :01:50.
The company imported the turkey from Germany. | :01:51. | :01:54.
As it was vacuum packed it was not easy to tell the difference, | :01:55. | :01:57.
especially as the company used fake certificates to con customers into | :01:58. | :02:02.
believing it was a certified halal meat business when it was not. | :02:03. | :02:06.
This scam only came to light after extra | :02:07. | :02:08.
checks were carried out following the horse meat scandal. | :02:09. | :02:13.
It started when a courier was sampled and to everyone's amazement | :02:14. | :02:16.
the analyst said it was nothing but Turkey. | :02:17. | :02:23.
The reaction was to say check again, it cannot be turkey but it was. | :02:24. | :02:36.
It started from there and a referral from the Food Trading | :02:37. | :02:38.
This butcher shop sells both halal and non-halal meat | :02:39. | :02:43.
and says this case highlights the importance of knowing where your | :02:44. | :02:45.
We are very strict on traceability here. | :02:46. | :02:50.
We know exactly where the meat comes from. | :02:51. | :02:52.
All our beef is traceable back to the farm. | :02:53. | :02:54.
The halal meat is all traceable back to the source. | :02:55. | :03:01.
In total, 116,000 kg of Turkey was falsely sold. | :03:02. | :03:08.
Today the judge told the men their crime was a serious one. | :03:09. | :03:11.
They will be sentenced at Leicester Crown Court later this month. | :03:12. | :03:19.
Next the government pledge to invest millions of pounds | :03:20. | :03:23.
to boost our region's economy following yesterday's Budget. | :03:24. | :03:26.
It's part of a ?392 million package for the so-called | :03:27. | :03:28.
'Midlands Engine' - an attempt to improve connectivity, | :03:29. | :03:30.
Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire will get | :03:31. | :03:38.
?59 million of that over the next four years. | :03:39. | :03:40.
It'll be spent on improving roads, creating jobs and developing skills. | :03:41. | :03:44.
But some say the money is simply not enough. | :03:45. | :03:50.
The venue, Silverstone Racing Circuit, the subject - roads and | :03:51. | :03:53.
As council and business leaders met to discuss | :03:54. | :04:00.
improvements, the Chancellor Philip Hammond announced ?59 million in | :04:01. | :04:04.
funding for Northamptonshire, Bedfordshire and Bucks as part of | :04:05. | :04:09.
8 million will go towards completing the Northhampton, north-west relief | :04:10. | :04:17.
The bid we needed was considerably more than 59 | :04:18. | :04:21.
I appreciate the situation the government is in, they can | :04:22. | :04:27.
only give us a certain amount of money and the money announced today | :04:28. | :04:30.
It will allow us to get on with the planning | :04:31. | :04:34.
of the route but when it comes to actually constructing the northern | :04:35. | :04:37.
ring road around Northampton, we will need multimillions to be | :04:38. | :04:41.
The funding will set the wheels in motion for the M1-A6 | :04:42. | :04:49.
link road north of Luton which will receive ?22 million. | :04:50. | :04:53.
The town will also benefit from a ?4 million | :04:54. | :04:55.
If you look round the whole area, they have | :04:56. | :05:03.
done up the station, the area around the cultural | :05:04. | :05:07.
entire area and make it a cultural quarter for the town. | :05:08. | :05:14.
While some argue our share of the cash could | :05:15. | :05:16.
be greater, others say it will make a big difference. | :05:17. | :05:20.
This comes on top of ?206 million of investment into the | :05:21. | :05:28.
A further 59 million will enable us to work on | :05:29. | :05:32.
the infrastructure which is needed to benefit communities and it is of | :05:33. | :05:37.
According to the Chancellor there will be more government investment | :05:38. | :05:43.
This is not a one-off, this is part of a programme | :05:44. | :05:48.
to galvanise this economy to allow it to achieve its full potential and | :05:49. | :05:52.
make the greatest possible contribution to Britain's future. | :05:53. | :06:00.
That is what council leaders here are hoping for. | :06:01. | :06:08.
Earlier I spoke to our political reporter Tom Barton who explained | :06:09. | :06:11.
why parts of this region are affected by growth | :06:12. | :06:13.
Of course, Luton is practically in London. | :06:14. | :06:20.
People who live there do not look towards Birmingham. | :06:21. | :06:26.
Because of local enterprise partnerships, government | :06:27. | :06:33.
funding for the Midlands is spread over a huge area. | :06:34. | :06:36.
All the way over to the Welsh border in the West and | :06:37. | :06:41.
all the way to the Lincolnshire coast in the opposite direction. | :06:42. | :06:46.
Just as from the previous Chancellor we heard about the 'northern | :06:47. | :06:51.
powerhouse', it seems that Philip Hammond's priority | :06:52. | :06:54.
Those parts of our region which find themselves in that area | :06:55. | :07:03.
could well find more money coming their way. | :07:04. | :07:10.
But on the day after a budget which has seen very little | :07:11. | :07:13.
other money for the rest of the East of England, | :07:14. | :07:16.
themselves feeling a little short-changed tonight. | :07:17. | :07:23.
It's been a day of chaos for rail passengers using | :07:24. | :07:25.
the Virgin East Coast services through Stevenage and Peterborough. | :07:26. | :07:28.
Overhead power line problems between Retford and Newark meant | :07:29. | :07:30.
many services were either severely delayed or cancelled. | :07:31. | :07:32.
Network Rail says it's working to repair the cables and a normal | :07:33. | :07:35.
service will be in place in time for tomorrow morning's rush hour. | :07:36. | :07:41.
Cereal farmers in our region say they have been badly hit | :07:42. | :07:44.
after a major grain merchant went into administration. | :07:45. | :07:46.
Cambridgeshire Wellgrain stopped trading at the end of last month. | :07:47. | :07:50.
Many farmers are still owed thousands of pounds | :07:51. | :07:52.
and have no idea if they'll get any of it back. | :07:53. | :08:05.
Now four year old boys can rarely sit still - | :08:06. | :08:07.
still for 20 hours every day in an area the size of a single bed? | :08:08. | :08:12.
That's what life's like for Ishmail Ali from Luton. | :08:13. | :08:14.
He's one of only a hundred people across the world who has a liver | :08:15. | :08:18.
disease called "lifetime jaundice" and needs to stay under ultra-violet | :08:19. | :08:20.
Four-year-old Ishmail has spent almost his entire life like this. | :08:21. | :08:26.
A rare liver condition called Crigler-Najjar means he eats, | :08:27. | :08:28.
phototherapy lights for a minimum of 20 hours a day. | :08:29. | :08:37.
Because he's missing an enzyme in his liver to | :08:38. | :08:42.
break down what we call jaundice, he hasn't got that at all, so | :08:43. | :08:45.
unfortunately because it builds up, it's like a toxin in the blood and | :08:46. | :08:51.
as a toxin, if it goes to the brain, first thing they've said is it | :08:52. | :08:56.
will go past the ears etc, he will become deaf, | :08:57. | :08:59.
he will get some sort of brain damage, maybe permanent. | :09:00. | :09:02.
He has to be cooped up in his medical phototherapy bed. | :09:03. | :09:05.
because we have a seven-year-old sister, so he just wants to run | :09:06. | :09:09.
around like a normal four-year-old boy and just run around the house | :09:10. | :09:11.
and play around with her, but it is almost like a prison for him. | :09:12. | :09:16.
The family have a carer that comes for six hours a | :09:17. | :09:25.
week, but they're hoping to raise money through a crowdfunding page | :09:26. | :09:28.
Our little sister, the seven-year-old, she's | :09:29. | :09:32.
not getting any quality of life either because she says, you know, | :09:33. | :09:35.
we're basically spending all the time with him, in and out of | :09:36. | :09:38.
hospital, so we don't ever get to play with her so if | :09:39. | :09:43.
someone can be with him, we can at least get a bit of a break, | :09:44. | :09:47.
a little bit of a rest and then be able to | :09:48. | :09:50.
concentrate on caring for him even more. | :09:51. | :09:52.
It is very likely that Ishmail will spend the rest of his life | :09:53. | :09:56.
Frustrating for an energetic and cheeky little boy, but his family | :09:57. | :10:04.
say they will do everything they can to make sure he has the best quality | :10:05. | :10:08.
Just time to leave you with the weather and Alex. | :10:09. | :10:18.
After plenty of fine weather today, a cold night | :10:19. | :10:22.
Through the evening and night temperatures | :10:23. | :10:25.
could go down to two or three degrees. | :10:26. | :10:30.
More cloud coming in from the West so the temperature should recover. | :10:31. | :10:33.
Tomorrow, we have this weather system coming in from the West. | :10:34. | :10:35.
High-pressure holding on so looks like fine weather in the morning. | :10:36. | :10:38.
A bit of a fresh start after the chilly night, we should | :10:39. | :10:41.
see good spells of sunshine in the morning. | :10:42. | :10:45.
Into the afternoon, more cloud coming from the West. | :10:46. | :10:47.
Remaining dry but the odd spot of light drizzle and colder because | :10:48. | :10:50.
National weather coming up and here is the outlook. | :10:51. | :11:01.
Turning unettled for the weekend, cooler and | :11:02. | :11:03.
day. On Sunday, cloudier, maybe spots of rain. | :11:04. | :11:11.
Good evening, in the spring sunshine we saw temperatures as high as 17.5 | :11:12. | :11:18.
Celsius. Not as warm or Sonning on Friday. Still a lot of dry, settled | :11:19. | :11:22.
weather in the forecast for the next few days. This was the sunset | :11:23. | :11:26.
captured by one of our Weather Watchers. Clear skies there. We have | :11:27. | :11:29.
had increasing amounts of cloud moving in from the West. Through the | :11:30. | :11:33.
remainder of tonight we will continue to see that cloud across | :11:34. | :11:36.
the south-west of England, the Channel Isles, weaving in across | :11:37. | :11:39.
Wales, Northern Ireland and western Scotland. Bringing with it some | :11:40. | :11:43.
outbreaks of drizzly rain, particularly around the coast and | :11:44. | :11:47.
the hills. Further east, clear skies and the coldest temperatures. We are | :11:48. | :11:50.
likely to see frost across eastern | :11:51. | :11:52. |
