Hello and welcome to the Look East late news. | :00:00. | :00:00.
In the programme tonight: An early morning wake-up call for residents | :00:00. | :00:11.
of a flat in Norwich in the war against drug dealers from London. | :00:12. | :00:17.
A jewel in the crown of the region's economy is sold to America. | :00:18. | :00:22.
And just like Forest Gump - the charity fundraiser | :00:23. | :00:25.
I'm Vanessa Baffoe with the late edition of Look East. | :00:26. | :00:39.
Police in Norfolk have carried out their biggest raid yet | :00:40. | :00:41.
Operation Gravity was set up three months ago. | :00:42. | :00:48.
136 people have been arrested and Class A drugs with a street | :00:49. | :00:51.
This morning, Alex Dunlop joined police | :00:52. | :00:58.
for two raids in the centre of Norwich. | :00:59. | :01:00.
An inspector and his team come to call, but for the people in these | :01:01. | :01:04.
flats it is anything but a gentle door knock. | :01:05. | :01:10.
The search for heroin, cocaine and cash. | :01:11. | :01:13.
Within seconds they find evidence of drug abuse - | :01:14. | :01:16.
needles, syringes, pipes and pills and evidence of chaotic lifestyles. | :01:17. | :01:25.
Criminal gangs are migrating north from London preying on teenagers | :01:26. | :01:33.
This machete was found near the front door. | :01:34. | :01:38.
This is common that they use these weapons. | :01:39. | :01:45.
After just an hour, police have found enough to arrest six people, | :01:46. | :01:48.
You are under arrest on suspicion of intent to supply class a drugs. | :01:49. | :01:58.
A common practice for drug dealers who move into an area | :01:59. | :02:08.
is so-called cuckooing, which is what has happened here. | :02:09. | :02:12.
They befriend a vulnerable person and then take over the property | :02:13. | :02:15.
and use it as a base from where they can deal drugs. | :02:16. | :02:19.
More often than not the occupant is too afraid to tell them to leave. | :02:20. | :02:24.
If I phone the police they will put the windows | :02:25. | :02:26.
Violence, prostitution, shoplifting, burglaries, | :02:27. | :02:42.
all our crime is generally because people are trying | :02:43. | :02:45.
They come from London, other major cities. | :02:46. | :02:52.
Operation Gravity intends to stifle that market for drug dealers, | :02:53. | :02:58.
but that means these teams are in for the long haul. | :02:59. | :03:05.
The man leading Operation Gravity is Chief Superintendant Dave Marshall | :03:06. | :03:07.
Earlier, I asked him about the change in pattern | :03:08. | :03:10.
Drug dealing goes in phases. At the moment we have lots of people, | :03:11. | :03:24.
groups based in London coming out to Norfolk. They will befriend local | :03:25. | :03:30.
drug users, to use their premises to deal drugs from and that causes | :03:31. | :03:35.
quite a lot of tension so we will not only get violence and | :03:36. | :03:38.
competition between the dealers themselves, but we get people | :03:39. | :03:46.
receiving disproportionate violence. ?36,000 worth of drugs, that is a | :03:47. | :03:51.
small amount. Are you finding that you were singing against the tide? | :03:52. | :03:57.
The people coming up to Norfolk to deal drugs only carry small | :03:58. | :04:01.
quantities. They don't want to get lots of drugs seized off them if | :04:02. | :04:05.
caught, but we are taking those dealers out. We are taking those | :04:06. | :04:10.
drugs of the market but we're finding out who those people are and | :04:11. | :04:14.
reducing violence and gives an obituary to to safeguard those | :04:15. | :04:19.
impacted. Talking about those impacted by it, as well as looking | :04:20. | :04:23.
at the criminals bringing the drugs here to Norfolk, it is also about | :04:24. | :04:28.
the victims. What are you doing to help them and make sure they come | :04:29. | :04:33.
forward? Automatically what we are trying to do is reduced violence, so | :04:34. | :04:40.
it is about getting the community to come forward with information. It is | :04:41. | :04:44.
also about supporting those people who of honourable, people who want | :04:45. | :04:50.
to change their lifestyle, because by reducing the number of people who | :04:51. | :04:56.
want drugs, we reduced the market and safeguard people. We're working | :04:57. | :05:00.
with a whole range of partners to give that support to people. | :05:01. | :05:02.
The leader of the UK Independence Party on Norfolk County Council | :05:03. | :05:06.
Party sources say Toby Coke stood down following | :05:07. | :05:11.
He was a leading member of the so called rainbow alliance, | :05:12. | :05:17.
which ran the County Council in Norfolk for four years. | :05:18. | :05:24.
Another of the region's leading high-tech firms | :05:25. | :05:25.
E2V in Chelmsford is being bought by an American company | :05:26. | :05:29.
Well, our business correspondent Richard Bond has | :05:30. | :05:36.
It's one of the jewels in the crown of the region's economy. | :05:37. | :05:40.
E2v of Chelmsford might not be a household name, but Nasa, | :05:41. | :05:45.
Boeing and Airbus use its sensors and semiconductors and now this | :05:46. | :05:49.
British high-tech star is about to fall into foreign hands | :05:50. | :05:54.
thanks to a ?600 million takeover by an American firm. | :05:55. | :05:58.
It grew out of Marconi and for many years was known | :05:59. | :06:04.
It's the latest British high-tech firm from this region to fall | :06:05. | :06:11.
under foreign ownership, but should we care? | :06:12. | :06:15.
Quite a few people cared when Cambridge -based Arm Holdings | :06:16. | :06:19.
The chip designer was bought by the Japanese. | :06:20. | :06:31.
Does it matter if our high-tech firms are bought | :06:32. | :06:33.
If you look at the companies that are acquiring our local businesses, | :06:34. | :06:37.
they are major multinationals with huge resources, | :06:38. | :06:39.
so that gives a big opportunity for further investment | :06:40. | :06:41.
The American company buying E2v is called Teledyne. | :06:42. | :06:45.
It specialises in defence electronics, aerospace | :06:46. | :06:48.
It's a great compliment to E2v and all it has achieved | :06:49. | :06:53.
over its various incarnations that we have this American | :06:54. | :06:58.
We want to see it remain in Chelmsford, we want to see | :06:59. | :07:06.
investment continued in developing the company, developing products | :07:07. | :07:08.
there and we are hopeful that it will be good news for E2v | :07:09. | :07:11.
as an organisation and Chelmsford as a city. | :07:12. | :07:13.
While a small number of head office jobs are expected to be lost, | :07:14. | :07:16.
the vast majority of staff are likely to be kept on. | :07:17. | :07:20.
The company's strength in growing high-tech markets should see to | :07:21. | :07:23.
As a mark of respect to those killed and injured | :07:24. | :07:29.
in the Westminster attack, City Hall in Norwich is being lit up | :07:30. | :07:33.
The tribute will continue until early next week. | :07:34. | :07:40.
Three years ago, Dave Reading smoked 60 a day | :07:41. | :07:43.
and now he's hoping to beat the world record | :07:44. | :07:53.
for running the 837 miles from Lands End to John O'Groats. | :07:54. | :08:00.
In just three years, Dave has become a running machine. | :08:01. | :08:04.
Pounding the pavements at steady speed. | :08:05. | :08:07.
For him it really is much, much more of a marathon than a sprint. | :08:08. | :08:12.
I was a heavy smoker and gave up and running helped with the craving. | :08:13. | :08:21.
Trouble is I did not know where to stop. | :08:22. | :08:24.
He is now taking on a truly epic challenge running all the way | :08:25. | :08:28.
from Lands End to John O'Groats raising money for the charity | :08:29. | :08:32.
You are trying to run 837 miles in eight and half days, | :08:33. | :08:40.
It is a long way so we will see what happens. | :08:41. | :08:54.
At home, his wife and eight children keep him busy. | :08:55. | :08:59.
He could barely make it up the stairs. | :09:00. | :09:04.
I thought he was stupid but it is inspiring. | :09:05. | :09:12.
We have a toilet on-board, cooking facilities, a small bed | :09:13. | :09:25.
for Dave to have a rest on if he needs to have a lie down. | :09:26. | :09:33.
I will run four marathons a day so that is the equivalent of 33 | :09:34. | :09:42.
The record stands at just over nine days. | :09:43. | :09:50.
His attempt to beat it already makes him a hero. | :09:51. | :09:56.
Alex is next with the weather but it's goodnight from me. | :09:57. | :10:08.
Good evening. It is a pretty settled outlook with fine spring weather on | :10:09. | :10:17.
the way. At the moment there is some cloud coming in from the North sea. | :10:18. | :10:21.
A slightly brisk north-easterly breeze continuing meaning | :10:22. | :10:26.
temperatures not dropping as low as they could. Along the coast six or 7 | :10:27. | :10:32.
degrees. Further inland, four or five Celsius. High-pressure | :10:33. | :10:38.
dominating the scene. Cloud around first thing but good spells of | :10:39. | :10:41.
sunshine through the day. That wind will still be present so it will be | :10:42. | :10:46.
cooler on the coast, but it should feel warmer in the shelter, around | :10:47. | :10:51.
ten or 11 Celsius. The outlook- another fine day on the way for | :10:52. | :10:58.
Saturday. More cloud and cooler for Sunday | :10:59. | :10:59. |
