The headlines from BBC Look North this Wednesday night: | :00:00. | :00:08.
There's been a sharp rise in hate crimes reported to Humberside | :00:09. | :00:11.
and Lincolnshire Police since the Brexit vote. | :00:12. | :00:15.
I have been a victim of hate, victimised, | :00:16. | :00:18.
people have called me names, called terrorist. | :00:19. | :00:21.
You kind of get used to it but sometimes, | :00:22. | :00:24.
when you are on your own, you get frightened. | :00:25. | :00:27.
A hospital trust is told that it must improve following an inspection | :00:28. | :00:32.
A Lincolnshire MP adds his voice to calls for the House | :00:33. | :00:38.
Record levels of hate crime have been reported by police | :00:39. | :01:00.
in East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire since the EU referendum in June. | :01:01. | :01:05.
A hate crime is any attack which the victim, or anyone else, | :01:06. | :01:08.
thinks is based on someone's prejudice towards them | :01:09. | :01:12.
because of their race, religion, sexual orientation, | :01:13. | :01:15.
disability or because they're transgender. | :01:16. | :01:18.
Humberside Police recorded 140 hate crimes between July | :01:19. | :01:22.
An increase of 34% compared to the same period in 2015. | :01:23. | :01:28.
Lincolnshire Police recorded 78 hate crimes during the same period. | :01:29. | :01:33.
Nationally, 14,000 hate crimes were reported between July | :01:34. | :01:39.
Our correspondent Vicky Johnson reports from Scunthorpe. | :01:40. | :01:46.
In the days since the EU referendum, some members of our community have | :01:47. | :01:50.
been telling Humberside Police about the abuse they face. | :01:51. | :01:54.
Stuff that we are seeing after Brexit, things like, | :01:55. | :01:58.
we voted for leaving the EU, wy are you still here? | :01:59. | :02:02.
Basic things along the lines of there's no place in society | :02:03. | :02:07.
for your community, go back to your country. | :02:08. | :02:10.
Frodingham Road, Scunthorpe, one of the most multicultural | :02:11. | :02:13.
People of different nationalities and religions seem to rub along | :02:14. | :02:19.
for the most part quite well together, however, some | :02:20. | :02:22.
of those we spoke to have suffered racial abuse. | :02:23. | :02:25.
Abid Khan says the abuse can be deeply offensive. | :02:26. | :02:29.
People call me names, I have been called a terrorist, | :02:30. | :02:32.
You name it, lots of things under the sun, I have been called. | :02:33. | :02:39.
For Husna and her family the taunting can prove intimidating. | :02:40. | :02:45.
They just tell you to take the niqab off, the scarf | :02:46. | :02:49.
You kind of get used to it but, you know, | :02:50. | :02:55.
sometimes when you are on your own, you get frightened, | :02:56. | :02:57.
Chido, who moved from Zimbabwe 12 years ago, thinks people have become | :02:58. | :03:05.
At the beginning it was kind of difficult but as the years have | :03:06. | :03:10.
gone by, things are starting to get easier because not many people | :03:11. | :03:15.
comment or they are adjusting to the difference that we can | :03:16. | :03:20.
But that's not always the case in Lincolnshire where there's | :03:21. | :03:26.
been great uncertainty since the Brexit vote. | :03:27. | :03:28.
This service of friendship was meant to help heal divisions. | :03:29. | :03:32.
And the police say they're encouraging all victims of hate | :03:33. | :03:35.
As much as it's terrible that these incidents occur at all, | :03:36. | :03:41.
it is good news that people are feeling that Lincolnshire Police | :03:42. | :03:45.
can be trusted with that information and that we will do something | :03:46. | :03:48.
While there has been an increase in the number of hate crimes | :03:49. | :03:53.
reported to both the Humberside and Lincolnshire Police forces, | :03:54. | :03:56.
the number of cases is still relatively low compared | :03:57. | :04:00.
Unemployment figures have reduced in Yorkshire. | :04:01. | :04:09.
In the Yorkshire and the Humber region, 137,000 people were out | :04:10. | :04:12.
of work and claiming benefit in the last quarter of 2016. | :04:13. | :04:16.
But in the East Midlands, which includes Lincolnshire, | :04:17. | :04:21.
Police activity has continued at a Lincolnshire firing range | :04:22. | :04:32.
after officers began seizing weapons from the site on Monday. | :04:33. | :04:36.
It's after the Home Office revoked a firearms licence held by an arms | :04:37. | :04:40.
dealer on the Skydock site at Faldingworth. | :04:41. | :04:44.
Lincolnshire Police has said it's working with military experts | :04:45. | :04:48.
to seize the weapons to ensure public safety. | :04:49. | :04:52.
Ambulance and fire crews based in Louth are to share a station. | :04:53. | :04:56.
It's part of a long-term plan for emergency services | :04:57. | :04:59.
to collaborate more closely, save money and provide | :05:00. | :05:02.
The Louth station will be on Eastfield Road and will be | :05:03. | :05:07.
the first in Lincolnshire to be run this way. | :05:08. | :05:11.
Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals Trust has been criticised | :05:12. | :05:15.
because of a shortage of nurses and has been told that it has | :05:16. | :05:18.
The Care Quality Commission also said that A standards | :05:19. | :05:24.
needed to get better, but noted some improvements | :05:25. | :05:27.
after previous claims that staff were bullied. | :05:28. | :05:30.
Our reporter Katy Austin is at Hull Royal Infirmary. | :05:31. | :05:33.
Well, it says the trust requires improvement. | :05:34. | :05:39.
Now, that is the same rating it got in 2014, | :05:40. | :05:43.
when criticisms were made of a bullying culture | :05:44. | :05:46.
Emergency care's better, the staff culture is better. | :05:47. | :05:53.
But there aren't enough nurses and A waiting | :05:54. | :05:56.
However, the man in charge says he's confident things are on the up. | :05:57. | :06:03.
It is disappointing but we need to recognise the CQC have | :06:04. | :06:08.
raised the bar in terms of what they are looking | :06:09. | :06:11.
for and there has been a huge amount of work going on to get us pointed | :06:12. | :06:15.
in the right direction so I am confident we are now in a place | :06:16. | :06:18.
where we can move to good and then beyond. | :06:19. | :06:21.
Now, this trust serves a population of more than 600,000 people | :06:22. | :06:24.
Its main bases being the Hull RI and Castle Hill Hospital. | :06:25. | :06:31.
And out of five categories looked at by the inspectors, | :06:32. | :06:36.
including safety and effectiveness, just one, the caring of staff, | :06:37. | :06:41.
So there's optimism at the top but there's clearly work to be done. | :06:42. | :06:50.
A Lincolnshire MP has called on his colleagues to pass a motion | :06:51. | :06:54.
of no confidence in the Speaker of the House of Commons. | :06:55. | :06:58.
Lincoln's Karl McCartney says that John Bercow's position is untenable | :06:59. | :07:02.
after he made comments critical of the US President Donald Trump. | :07:03. | :07:07.
But others say that the Speaker has every right to voice his opinions. | :07:08. | :07:11.
Our Political Editor Tim Iredale has more. | :07:12. | :07:14.
He is the man charged with keeping order in the House of Commons | :07:15. | :07:22.
but at least one of our MPs believes John Bercow is out of order | :07:23. | :07:25.
after he said President Trump would not be welcome to address | :07:26. | :07:28.
parliament when he arrives in the country later this year. | :07:29. | :07:31.
I would not wish to issue an invitation to President Trump. | :07:32. | :07:36.
Lincoln MP Karl McCartney has e-mailed fellow MPs urging them | :07:37. | :07:40.
to support a motion of no-confidence in Speaker Bercow, saying | :07:41. | :07:43.
that he is not politically impartial and that his position | :07:44. | :07:47.
The role of the Speaker of the House of Commons is meant to be | :07:48. | :07:52.
By speaking out on such a politically divisive issue, | :07:53. | :07:57.
he has broken the terms of the contract of which his | :07:58. | :08:00.
job is and I believe, fully supportive of Karl, | :08:01. | :08:03.
But another MP called Karl disagrees. | :08:04. | :08:07.
He said in his opinion he would not want him to be | :08:08. | :08:10.
He is entitled to have that opinion because it is the Speaker | :08:11. | :08:15.
of the House of Commons, together with the Speaker | :08:16. | :08:17.
of the Lords and the Lord Great Chamberlain who will decide | :08:18. | :08:21.
John Bercow is entitled to have that opinion. | :08:22. | :08:25.
This is Speakers' Corner in Lincoln where people come to have their say | :08:26. | :08:29.
So what's the verdict here on whether the House | :08:30. | :08:34.
of Commons Speaker was right or wrong to speak out | :08:35. | :08:37.
Donald Trump is segregating people so I think it is the right | :08:38. | :08:43.
thing for him to say, for John Bercow to say. | :08:44. | :08:46.
His views are bad but they will strike more people to put their foot | :08:47. | :08:50.
I think a lot more people will make a stand. | :08:51. | :08:55.
If Donald Trump wants to come to the UK, let him come to the UK. | :08:56. | :08:59.
It is not John Bercow's right to speak out and talk | :09:00. | :09:04.
Parliament isn't sitting this week but when MPs return | :09:05. | :09:09.
to Westminster next week, we will know whether Karl McCartney | :09:10. | :09:12.
has been successful in persuading his colleagues to support a motion | :09:13. | :09:15.
of no-confidence against the Speaker. | :09:16. | :09:18.
Tim Iredale, BBC Look North, Lincoln. | :09:19. | :09:22.
Luke Campbell has held an open training session in Hull tonight | :09:23. | :09:26.
ahead of his fight at Hull Ice Arena on February 25th. | :09:27. | :09:30.
He will take on Mexican Jairo Lopez in a lightweight bout. | :09:31. | :09:35.
Luke has lost just one of his 15 fights and this bout could be | :09:36. | :09:39.
a stepping stone to a world title fight in the near future. | :09:40. | :09:50.
Time for the weather now with Paul Hudson. | :09:51. | :09:54.
It has been pretty wet in places so far this evening. | :09:55. | :09:59.
Bright and breezy with a variable amount of cloud. | :10:00. | :10:03.
So we get rid of that rain fairly shortly and then overnight | :10:04. | :10:09.
just one or two showers possible, otherwise it is going to be | :10:10. | :10:13.
Lowest temperatures around five Celsius. | :10:14. | :10:17.
As for tomorrow, it looks as though it is going to be bright and breezy. | :10:18. | :10:22.
There could be the odd shower but there will be some sunny breaks. | :10:23. | :10:28.
Quite a windy day with top temperatures around 10 Celsius. | :10:29. | :10:30.
Some low cloud on Friday morning, otherwise it brightens up | :10:31. | :10:35.
And the weekend is looking mostly fine. | :10:36. | :10:45.
That is it from us tonight. Thank for watching. Goodbye. | :10:46. | :11:03.
the weekend. Wouldn't promise you two dry days but you never know, | :11:04. | :11:06.
here is Nick with the national picture. | :11:07. | :11:10.
Hello. We put that cold weekend well behind us now. Temperatures edging | :11:11. | :11:14.
upwards and our weather watchers are seeing plenty of signs of spring. | :11:15. | :11:19.
Spending more time looking down than looking up at the skies, | :11:20. | :11:20. |
