The headlines from BBC Look North this Thursday night.

:00:12.:00:14.

A narrow escape for a driver as a major storm hits our area -

:00:15.:00:18.

Road and Rail services are disrupted as high winds

:00:19.:00:21.

It felt like something from a waterfall, you know when you hear

:00:22.:00:33.

buildings crashing and walls crashing. It was quite frightening.

:00:34.:00:40.

And backing for a Sugar Tax as concern grows about

:00:41.:00:43.

the increasing number of overweight youngsters.

:00:44.:00:45.

We have not seen the end of Storm Doris yet. I will have the full

:00:46.:00:49.

I will have the full forecast shortly.

:00:50.:00:56.

The impact of today's big storm has been felt

:00:57.:00:59.

across East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, as thousands

:01:00.:01:00.

of homes were left without power and trees were brought down.

:01:01.:01:03.

Strong winds of up to seventy miles per hour ripped

:01:04.:01:06.

through the area, blocking roads and disrupting public transport.

:01:07.:01:09.

One driver in Spalding had a lucky escape as a tree fell right

:01:10.:01:13.

in front of his car, while another vehicle was crushed

:01:14.:01:18.

Our reporter Jill Archbold is in Beverley, where a busy road

:01:19.:01:23.

was brought to a standstill by a fallen tree earlier.

:01:24.:01:25.

Yes, it's house. It all seems very calm this evening but there are

:01:26.:01:42.

signs of the damage from earlier. A tree trunk collapsed on this

:01:43.:01:48.

hedgerow. -- yes it is. The tree snapped in half and a few hours ago

:01:49.:01:54.

it was lying across this busy route into Beverley. That has been the

:01:55.:01:59.

story of the day, countless images of trees across roads and pavements,

:02:00.:02:05.

in some cases even uprooted from the ground. It has been a very busy

:02:06.:02:11.

afternoon for emergency services who have been trying to react to this

:02:12.:02:13.

short but powerful storm. Southern Lincolnshire

:02:14.:02:17.

bore the brunt of Doris. In Spalding this driving instructor

:02:18.:02:19.

witnessed first hand Waves whipped-up

:02:20.:02:21.

by the wind made it slow And for those crossing the river

:02:22.:02:24.

there've been safety concerns. The Humber Bridge -

:02:25.:02:31.

closed to high-sided vehicles - but that closure is only advice -

:02:32.:02:34.

and many have made the journey. At one point

:02:35.:02:40.

Lincolnshire Police said trees were falling faster

:02:41.:02:42.

than they could tweet about them. And we've been send

:02:43.:02:46.

dozens of your photos. In the centre of Lincoln

:02:47.:02:51.

the wind was strong enough to bring down a wall -

:02:52.:02:53.

damaging a car - There was a big gust of wind

:02:54.:02:56.

and we saw the wall crashing down. It all happened like slow motion

:02:57.:03:07.

and then you heard this really loud We have had strong winds before

:03:08.:03:10.

but to witness something like By late afternoon it was estimated

:03:11.:03:14.

that nearly 5,000 properties were without power across Lincolnshire -

:03:15.:03:18.

and as darkness fell around half of those homes

:03:19.:03:20.

were still waiting for repairs. At seven o'clock this evening, there

:03:21.:03:38.

were 2500 homes across Lincolnshire who were still without power. As of

:03:39.:03:45.

tonight 1600 homes are still waiting to be reconnected. Although there

:03:46.:03:48.

have been reports of windows blown in and people swept off their feet,

:03:49.:03:53.

luckily it seems there haven't been any serious injuries in our region.

:03:54.:03:58.

Thank you very much, weather forecast to fall.

:03:59.:04:00.

A motorcyclist has died following a crash in North Lincolnshire.

:04:01.:04:02.

The 37-year-old man was travelling on Holmes Lane in Bottesford

:04:03.:04:05.

yesterday evening when his bike came off the road.

:04:06.:04:07.

And a 31-year-old cyclist died last night in Lincolnshire.

:04:08.:04:10.

It was following a collision with a car on the A158

:04:11.:04:13.

It happened at about quarter to nine.

:04:14.:04:16.

Police are asking for any witnesses to come forward.

:04:17.:04:20.

Fire crews were called out to tackle a fire

:04:21.:04:22.

Six fire engines were called to a storage building

:04:23.:04:26.

for Dynex Semi-Conductors on Doddington Road.

:04:27.:04:28.

It started just after four o'clock this afternoon.

:04:29.:04:35.

A tax on sugary drinks will help to reduce the number

:04:36.:04:38.

of overweight children in North Lincolnshire.

:04:39.:04:40.

That's according to a leading diet expert from the area,

:04:41.:04:44.

where more than a fifth of children leaving primary school

:04:45.:04:50.

Families are now being given help to manage diets and lifestyles,

:04:51.:04:53.

amid concerns the country faces a diabetes epidemic.

:04:54.:04:56.

Our Health Correspondent Vicky Johnson has been looking at how

:04:57.:04:59.

The soft drinks industry levy will be introduced in 2018,

:05:00.:05:09.

allowing companies time to change their recipes.

:05:10.:05:11.

The amount of tax will depend on the amount of sugar in the drink.

:05:12.:05:14.

Pure fruit juices and milk-based drinks will be exempt.

:05:15.:05:17.

The Government says it expects to raise more than half

:05:18.:05:21.

a billion pounds from the tax in the first year alone.

:05:22.:05:24.

Much of that will fund things like breakfast clubs and sports,

:05:25.:05:27.

to encourage children to eat and be healthier.

:05:28.:05:32.

Sugar has become almost as big an enemy to our health,

:05:33.:05:34.

according to some experts, as alcohol or tobacco.

:05:35.:05:37.

Fanta, do we think that is higher or lower than the Slush Puppy?

:05:38.:05:42.

Part of the Get Going programme in North Lincolnshire aims

:05:43.:05:44.

to educate families about nutrition, especially the sugar

:05:45.:05:47.

We do a task around ketchup and also other sauces and people don't

:05:48.:05:55.

realise how much sugar is in your sauces, your ketchups.

:05:56.:06:00.

The Volvic one really surprised me when I first did this.

:06:01.:06:03.

I used to drink quite a few of them and now I am like, what?

:06:04.:06:08.

I understand that sometimes you have got to have sugar in these things

:06:09.:06:12.

but I think the amount they put in can be a bit excessive.

:06:13.:06:15.

More than 20% of children who leave primary schools across Lincolnshire

:06:16.:06:18.

and East Yorkshire are classed as obese and the Sykes family say

:06:19.:06:22.

they wanted to tackle their weight problems together.

:06:23.:06:26.

I know the implications of the health issues, diabetes, etc,

:06:27.:06:28.

and I didn't want them, going forward,

:06:29.:06:29.

Last year, the then Chancellor weighed in with

:06:30.:06:36.

I can announce that we will introduce a new sugar levy

:06:37.:06:41.

I think fizzy drinks are a good thing to target and it's probably

:06:42.:06:46.

an initial initiative that there are going to be

:06:47.:06:48.

things which follow on from that, in other foods.

:06:49.:06:50.

Sugary drinks don't contain any other nutrients.

:06:51.:06:56.

We're now seeing companies bringing their sugar

:06:57.:07:00.

levels down by 40% which is way over what was asked

:07:01.:07:04.

so the fear of God has been put in companies saying

:07:05.:07:06.

unless you bring your sugar content down we will tax you.

:07:07.:07:11.

So the finance people are saying we're not having that and they're

:07:12.:07:14.

So in the end it will be a win-win solution for everybody.

:07:15.:07:19.

But those involved in the sugar industry doubt it

:07:20.:07:21.

Consumption per head of sugars has dropped by 15% and since 2001,

:07:22.:07:27.

Others argue that this tax will hit the poor hardest and the focus

:07:28.:07:33.

be on public health campaigns, rather than through this levy.

:07:34.:07:43.

MPs from our area are warning that jobs at a Hull-based firm could be

:07:44.:07:46.

lost as the government reviews a green energy scheme.Vivergo

:07:47.:07:51.

is the largest supplier of biofuels in the UK.

:07:52.:07:54.

Currently a percentage of fuel sold at petrol stations needs to come

:07:55.:07:57.

from biofuels but Ministers have been consulting on plans

:07:58.:07:59.

The Minister of State will recall at our meeting in December with

:08:00.:08:16.

representatives from the company, where jobs are under threat. The

:08:17.:08:22.

consultation has now closed, can the minister in light of us as to when

:08:23.:08:28.

he will make a decision and avert the threat of redundancy?

:08:29.:08:29.

Lincolnshire Police have crushed a car suspected

:08:30.:08:33.

The force have seized a number of vehicles which were used to chase

:08:34.:08:37.

It was a disappointing night for Hull FC in Super League.

:08:38.:08:42.

They were looking to go top of the table with a win

:08:43.:08:45.

over Catalan Dragons - but lost a close game a short time

:08:46.:08:48.

of the Bransholme Estate in Hull for its 50th birthday.

:08:49.:09:03.

week the team have been at the North Point Shopping Centre

:09:04.:09:07.

looking for people to feature in a new film about the estate.

:09:08.:09:10.

Filming of their stories has already begun.

:09:11.:09:15.

When we first moved in here, there was no boundary,

:09:16.:09:20.

so this room, our living room, was in Sutton, where

:09:21.:09:23.

we could have a cup of tea and then we could walk

:09:24.:09:26.

This is where we could have our dinner and our tea,

:09:27.:09:41.

And tomorrow I'll be joining the team at North Point Shopping

:09:42.:09:46.

Centre in Bransholme between 11 and one so come and say hello.

:09:47.:09:53.

It has been an unsettled day for most of us and we will be pleased to

:09:54.:10:15.

hear that Storm Doris has left us. A few showers, blustery along the

:10:16.:10:20.

coast. We could C temperatures of two or three Celsius. We could say

:10:21.:10:26.

some icy patches in rural regions further inland. What a difference 24

:10:27.:10:31.

hours make. A lot of dry and bright weather tomorrow, sunshine in the

:10:32.:10:37.

forecast. Highs of eight Celsius, the wind is much lighter. Saturday

:10:38.:10:42.

receivers were front make its way us, rain throughout the day but much

:10:43.:10:48.

more settled. That's it from us tonight, we are back in the morning.

:10:49.:10:57.

I was see you tomorrow. Either at Branscombe or hear. Good night.

:10:58.:11:01.

be much milder. I will leave you with Thomas Shelter.

:11:02.:11:11.

Good evening. It was quite a day for some of us. We get these sort of

:11:12.:11:18.

storms every couple of years also. Difficult to give an exact number,

:11:19.:11:22.

but it was certainly a nasty one. It's

:11:23.:11:23.
