A woman from Hull, who successfully campaigned for better safety aboard

North Sea Trawlers in the late 1960s, has died at the age of 79.

Mary Denness was one of a group of women from the city dubbed

"The Headscarf Revolutionaries", who started lobbying the Government

after three trawlers sank with the loss of 58 lives.

They captured the public's attention with a determined

and hard fought campaign, as Victoria Holland reports.

She was the skipper's wife who changed lives.

Mary Denness joined three other women on a revolution in the 60s,

to make their men's lives safer on North Sea Trawlers.

That build build-up of anger, of frustration, and then two

territory - it was very misogynistic in those days.

also inspired other artists, authors and Hull campaigners.

Today, flowers had been left at a bench which had

been unveiled in her honour two years ago.

Mary became a very eloquent spokesman then and later.

It is quite apt that we are here remembering this remarkable

without whom countless thousands of lives would have been lost.

The campaign meant the industry was regulated, with a trained radio

A man has been charged following a series of car thefts

in Hull and East Yorkshire on Friday morning.

One attempted theft took place in Hedon.
