Hello and welcome to Friday's Look North. Tonight: On the edge of | :00:09. | :00:11.
disaster - a woman narrowly escapes death when her patio collapses | :00:11. | :00:13.
during Cumbria's storms. Under fire - the 81 year-old | :00:14. | :00:17.
coroner being urged to resign over inquest delays. | :00:17. | :00:20.
Hitting the buffers - why one of the world's most historic railway | :00:20. | :00:24.
lines could be at risk. The great summer getaway begins, as | :00:24. | :00:30.
thousands fly off to the sun. And on a wing and a prayer - we | :00:30. | :00:33.
look forward to this year's Sunderland Air Show. | :00:33. | :00:35.
In sport, can Wembley success provide the springboard for | :00:35. | :00:39.
Darlington's return to the Football League? | :00:39. | :00:42.
And talking of springboards - how did this North Yorkshire teenager | :00:42. | :00:52.
:00:52. | :00:56. | ||
First tonight, the horrifying moment a pensioner's back yard | :00:56. | :00:59.
collapsed and plunged 40 feet into a river below. Pat Howe's garden | :00:59. | :01:06.
shed went with it. And she says she's lucky to be alive because she | :01:06. | :01:10.
was in the shed earlier in the day. Pat, from Wetheral in Cumbria, is | :01:10. | :01:13.
now facing a massive repair bill and a wrangle with her insurers. | :01:13. | :01:20.
Mark Macalindon has the story. Pat Howe fell in love with Howard | :01:20. | :01:24.
Cottage, her dream home, when she first saw it. But last Sunday was | :01:24. | :01:27.
to become a nightmare as storms which flooded homes in nearby Great | :01:27. | :01:37.
:01:37. | :01:38. | ||
Corby brought destruction to within inches of her back door. It was a | :01:38. | :01:43.
dreadful afternoon. The water came down vertically. There was what are | :01:43. | :01:53.
:01:53. | :01:54. | ||
pouring out of the gutterings. I was in that shed every day. It was | :01:54. | :01:57.
terrifying. I was shaking with fright. | :01:58. | :02:01.
Pat can still get to her shed, but it means walking the riverbank | :02:01. | :02:03.
below, where the view of what happened gives a disturbing insight | :02:04. | :02:13.
:02:14. | :02:17. | ||
into how lucky she's been. It comes not long after a dispute with her | :02:17. | :02:22.
insurance company. She contacted her insurance company after seeing | :02:22. | :02:27.
at crack a few months ago. Be said they were not liable and could not | :02:27. | :02:32.
pay for repairs. Now look at how has a big financial headache that | :02:32. | :02:37.
she says she is determined to rebuild her home. The people who | :02:37. | :02:41.
did the work on the tower at the church last year have looked at it. | :02:42. | :02:45.
They look at it before this happened, but they know this has | :02:45. | :02:50.
happened. They would be prepared to rebuild it. But there will be a | :02:50. | :02:59.
cost will there not? Yes, there will be a high cost. The surveyor | :02:59. | :03:07.
said they are not happy and it will cost a lot of money. There is | :03:07. | :03:13.
always the money problem. Bereaved families on Teesside are | :03:13. | :03:16.
facing an average wait of ten months before inquests into the | :03:16. | :03:19.
death of their loved ones take place. And some are blaming the 81 | :03:19. | :03:24.
year-old local coroner for the long delays. Now, MPs are urging Michael | :03:24. | :03:28.
Sheffield to consider his position. But he says he won't resign. Our | :03:28. | :03:33.
Political Editor, Richard Moss, has this report. | :03:33. | :03:37.
Mandi Blake collapsed and died in 2001 aged just 32. Her death a | :03:37. | :03:42.
complete mystery. And the grief of her family compounded by having to | :03:43. | :03:51.
wait 14 months for Michael Sheffield to conduct an inquest. | :03:51. | :03:56.
The whole family was devastated. None of us could move on until we | :03:56. | :04:00.
found out. 10 years on and Margo is appalled | :04:00. | :04:02.
that Mr Sheffield is still Teesside's Coroner and still | :04:02. | :04:11.
presiding over long delays. He is 81 years old. He should have let | :04:11. | :04:15.
when he was known for being a good person. But now he has kept all | :04:15. | :04:21.
these people waiting again why their loved ones have died. It is | :04:21. | :04:25.
awful that he knew were going through not knowing. If it was one | :04:25. | :04:30.
of his children would you like it to go on for 14 months? | :04:30. | :04:33.
The average wait in England for an inquest is 27 weeks. But in | :04:33. | :04:36.
Teesside it's risen from 33 in 2009, to 43 weeks last year. The | :04:36. | :04:39.
neighbouring Hartlepool Coroner takes an average of just 20 weeks | :04:39. | :04:47.
to complete an investigation. Michael Sheffield has said that the | :04:47. | :04:52.
delays are down to cuts in the number of police officers dedicated. | :04:52. | :04:57.
Police have denied that. Some say excuses should stop and action | :04:57. | :05:03.
should be taken. If my concern is for the families of loved ones who | :05:03. | :05:09.
have lost relatives. We need to get something done about it. It is no | :05:09. | :05:15.
good blaming someone else. He needs to be so do his position. | :05:15. | :05:18.
And Michael Sheffield does have form. In 2003, MPs called on him to | :05:18. | :05:20.
form. In 2003, MPs called on him to resign after he built up a two-year | :05:20. | :05:29.
backlog. In 2004 he was severely reprimanded by the Lord Chancellor. | :05:29. | :05:33.
While we were filming here Michael Sheffield came out. I asked him for | :05:33. | :05:37.
an interview. He said he could not. I asked him would you resign. He | :05:37. | :05:44.
said, why should he. And with that he left. MPs say the facts are | :05:44. | :05:47.
clear. Bereaved families are waiting too long. Mr Sheffield | :05:47. | :05:52.
should get a grip or get out they say. | :05:52. | :05:55.
Meanwhile, a date's finally been set for the inquest into the | :05:55. | :05:58.
Grayrigg train crash in Cumbria Grayrigg train crash in Cumbria | :05:58. | :06:01.
which happened four and a half years ago. | :06:01. | :06:04.
84 year-old Margaret Masson, from Glasgow, died when an express train | :06:04. | :06:08.
derailed on the West Coast line in February, 2007. Officials said | :06:08. | :06:10.
faulty points had gone unreported because of failures in routine | :06:10. | :06:20.
:06:20. | :06:21. | ||
checks. The inquest is due to start Built by George Stephenson, and the | :06:21. | :06:25.
only one of its kind in the world. Yet the Bowes Railway, which lies | :06:25. | :06:27.
between Sunderland and Gateshead, survives largely because of the | :06:27. | :06:32.
dedication of one man and his band of volunteers. And they're warning | :06:32. | :06:35.
we could be in danger of losing this incredibly important part of | :06:35. | :06:38.
our history - because not enough of us bother to visit. Our Chief | :06:38. | :06:44.
Reporter, Chris Stewart, has the story. | :06:45. | :06:49.
It's dirty. It's smelly. It's hard work. It's exactly the way it was | :06:49. | :06:53.
when it was a real colliery. With its own real railway taking coal to | :06:53. | :06:57.
the River Tyne. The region owes everything to places like this - | :06:57. | :07:07.
:07:07. | :07:09. | ||
and yet visitors can be down to four or five a week. Does it heard | :07:09. | :07:17.
that people do not come here in their droves? It can do. I look at | :07:17. | :07:21.
other places that have a big advertising budget. Some places are | :07:21. | :07:25.
like a family day out. This place is real history. We want people to | :07:26. | :07:31.
come in and support us. If you do not use it you will lose it. | :07:31. | :07:35.
So this Sunday is a big day. It's an open day. The engines will be | :07:35. | :07:38.
fired up and taking passengers on the mile and a half of track. The | :07:38. | :07:45.
coal for those engines has just been delivered. Guess what? It is | :07:45. | :07:49.
from up Russia. Generations of British miners must be spinning in | :07:49. | :07:53.
their graves. They would spend a faster still if they knew how tough | :07:53. | :07:57.
it was to keep this museum going. The only regular funding is 18,000 | :07:57. | :08:02.
per year from Sunderland City Council. Everything extra has to be | :08:02. | :08:06.
begged and borrowed. If we are not visiting enough is it really worth | :08:06. | :08:13.
saving? Very much so. We are losing all other industry and heritage. | :08:13. | :08:17.
This place could have apprentices in it. It could up all sorts. It is | :08:17. | :08:23.
not just asked at the museum. It is the real deal. It is the last | :08:23. | :08:30.
colliery site left. What cannot be measured in pounds and pence is the | :08:30. | :08:37.
passion of John and his volunteers. Perhaps that is priceless. | :08:37. | :08:40.
Still to come on Look North - Friday's sports desk. | :08:40. | :08:44.
Plus: All set for summer - 55,000 people get ready to jet off from | :08:44. | :08:53.
the North this weekend in search of sunnier skies. We are in for a | :08:53. | :08:58.
drier weekend and who will not be breaking any temperature records. | :08:58. | :09:03.
The Fool forecasts later. It's been a big success in London. | :09:03. | :09:06.
Now a cheap and easy cycle-hire scheme has been launched in | :09:06. | :09:14.
Newcastle. Branded bikes can be hired for up to two hours, from 15 | :09:14. | :09:18.
sites across the city centre. And more are planned in the suburbs, to | :09:18. | :09:21.
encourage city commuters to get on their bikes. Adrian Pitches saddled | :09:21. | :09:29.
up to find out more. First Paris, then London, now Newcastle. Two | :09:29. | :09:37.
hours by bike for 20p. Does that appeal? The yes it does. You need | :09:37. | :09:42.
exercise. It is fantastic. It will keep people healthy and get them | :09:42. | :09:52.
out. Hopefully it will not mean. Would you hire a bike? Half I not. | :09:52. | :09:57.
We expect and hope that all sorts of people will want to do this. | :09:57. | :10:04.
There will be plenty of racks around the city centre. We expect | :10:04. | :10:09.
that tourists and students will be interested. Do you think the bikes | :10:09. | :10:13.
were get stolen? Back is always a possibility, but if you look at | :10:13. | :10:16.
them they're not particularly cool looking bikes so they will not be | :10:16. | :10:20.
attractive to thieves, but equally this scheme has been running on | :10:20. | :10:24.
university campuses and outlying parts of the city centre for nine | :10:24. | :10:29.
months and none of the bikes have been stolen. The mastermind behind | :10:29. | :10:33.
the scheme are to engineering graduates. You can find a bike on | :10:33. | :10:37.
our website or walking around the stations are clearly marked. You | :10:37. | :10:47.
:10:47. | :10:47. | ||
can download hour at. You can also rent a bike through the eye phone. | :10:47. | :10:52.
The it is time to take the bike for us then that but first I must tuck | :10:52. | :10:58.
my trousers into my socks. Who used his bicycle clips nowadays? Urban | :10:58. | :11:08.
biking. Trousers in the socks - what a | :11:08. | :11:11.
great look. And the great summer getaway has | :11:11. | :11:16.
begun. Thousands of people across the North are heading for the Sun. | :11:16. | :11:24.
Spain, and the Canary Islands are their most popular destinations. We | :11:24. | :11:30.
will now go live to Newcastle Airport. | :11:30. | :11:35.
There is nothing worse than being in an airport all day. I am the | :11:35. | :11:39.
only one not going anywhere. All day we have seen people with | :11:39. | :11:49.
impressive tans, smiles, sombreros. No donkey's I am glad to report. | :11:49. | :11:53.
The schools have broken at and already the family's first year for | :11:53. | :11:58.
their holidays. It is not just their airports that benefit. There | :11:58. | :12:04.
are amazing facts for the past and the cafes. Over the next week 3494 | :12:04. | :12:14.
:12:14. | :12:23. | ||
The people we have been speaking to today are impressed by the figures | :12:23. | :12:29.
but they are thinking mostly of their holidays. I am excited. | :12:29. | :12:35.
excited. Ready for two weeks of relaxation. Tenerife. We are | :12:35. | :12:40.
relieved. It will be a nice break. What kind of mood are you in? | :12:40. | :12:47.
Excited. It is all the time. We are looking forward to having a seat | :12:47. | :12:55.
for a couple of hours. This is the calm before the storm. And the | :12:55. | :12:59.
innings and has come on. Already we have had at 80 flights leaving | :12:59. | :13:05.
today. Over the next two days there will be 130 holiday flights leaving. | :13:05. | :13:08.
The airport managers say they have been practising and preparing for | :13:08. | :13:14.
this all year. They say they are more than prepared. We are | :13:14. | :13:18.
expecting 55,000 customers from this morning at until Sunday. It is | :13:18. | :13:22.
the busiest period within our calendar. The most popular routes | :13:22. | :13:28.
are to Spain, the Canaries and to Turkey. We have got all our teams | :13:28. | :13:32.
all queued up to offer the customer or an exceptional journey and also | :13:32. | :13:42.
:13:42. | :13:43. | ||
The fifth a lot of people will be staying at home. Few places will be | :13:43. | :13:46.
busier than the Lake District. They're already impressed by the | :13:46. | :13:50.
number of people -- the number of bookings they have received. They | :13:50. | :13:57.
are confident of having a number -- another record year. People are a | :13:57. | :14:01.
bit wary about spending a lot of money. There being a bit cautious. | :14:01. | :14:05.
But we have a lot of loyal customers. They are coming back | :14:05. | :14:08.
because they know they can get a value for money holiday in | :14:09. | :14:13.
absolutely stunning surroundings. We are quite optimistic and we are | :14:13. | :14:19.
ready and waiting for the summer holiday to begin. But the one | :14:19. | :14:23.
important thing I have learnt today, the most important lessons, | :14:24. | :14:27.
spending a day at an airport is a lot more relaxing when you have not | :14:27. | :14:31.
got to children. The people who seem to be smiling at the most | :14:31. | :14:34.
other people are you travelling without. It is quite tempting to | :14:34. | :14:37.
join them! Well, if you are staying at home, | :14:37. | :14:41.
you might be among the crowd of around a million people expected to | :14:41. | :14:43.
attend next weekend's Sunderland International Airshow. There'll be | :14:44. | :14:47.
displays by jets, helicopters and classic planes. And also among the | :14:47. | :14:50.
attractions will be a wing-walking team, which includes a young woman | :14:50. | :14:58.
who's just graduated from Newcastle University. | :14:58. | :15:01.
The Breitling Wingwalkers have held crowds spellbound before at the | :15:01. | :15:04.
Sunderland International Airshow. This year, they're appearing on | :15:04. | :15:08.
both days. And one of the professional wingwalkers is | :15:08. | :15:10.
Charlotte Vose, who has just graduated with a geography degree | :15:10. | :15:20.
from Newcastle University. I was looking for a job. My mum find it, | :15:20. | :15:25.
actually. I love roller-coaster as and being outdoors and meeting | :15:25. | :15:29.
people, so it is a really great opportunity. You normally in a | :15:29. | :15:33.
cockpit, but when you're up there, the force of the wind is shocking. | :15:34. | :15:38.
When she gets used to it, it is an amazing experience. | :15:38. | :15:41.
The acrobatics are performed on the wings of the classic bi-plane as it | :15:41. | :15:44.
flies at more than 100 miles an hour. Lottie will appear at 90 | :15:44. | :15:47.
shows this year all over the UK and Europe. As an airshow preview, | :15:47. | :15:57.
volunteers could experience it for themselves. | :15:57. | :16:01.
You'd expect me to have a go. As an intrepid reporter, David expect me | :16:01. | :16:06.
to have a go. He did not really expect me to do that, did you?! | :16:06. | :16:09.
Joanne Moore from Sunderland Council did agree. She's worked on | :16:09. | :16:15.
the last seven airshows. Like thousands of other people, I have | :16:15. | :16:19.
looked up and really admired them. If I ever got the opportunity, I | :16:19. | :16:24.
wanted to do it. There is a few nerves around, but I am excited. | :16:24. | :16:29.
After a whirlwind five minutes, Joanne was back on the ground. | :16:29. | :16:36.
Absolutely amazing. I am glad I had the Opera it makes you appreciate | :16:36. | :16:39.
what a skill it is to be against that wind. | :16:39. | :16:45.
The Sunderland airshow takes place over the last weekend in July. | :16:45. | :16:47.
There's been an overwhelming response from people wanting to | :16:47. | :16:50.
adopt the slightly nervous Northumbria police dog who was too | :16:50. | :16:55.
soft on crime. Earlier this week, we told you about Vegas, the young | :16:55. | :16:57.
German Shepherd who failed her training course because she didn't | :16:57. | :17:03.
like biting. A police spokesman said they've received more than 300 | :17:03. | :17:07.
calls and emails from people offering her a new home. So no more | :17:07. | :17:13.
calls, please. They'll decide shortly on a new owner for Vegas. | :17:13. | :17:16.
From dogs to birds, and last night we began telling the incredible | :17:16. | :17:19.
story of two rare peregrine falcons who've set up home in the middle of | :17:19. | :17:24.
the huge noisy SABIC chemical works on Teesside. But what happened to | :17:24. | :17:28.
them next? In true soap opera style, our correspondent left the story on | :17:28. | :17:38.
:17:38. | :17:41. | ||
a cliff hanger! But she's back now for the final instalment. | :17:41. | :17:46.
A cliffhanger in many ways. Back in February, are birds were starting | :17:46. | :17:51.
to nest 90 metres up one of those Chenies behind me. Did they manage | :17:51. | :17:55.
to raise a family in that precarious spot and did our | :17:55. | :18:00.
wildlife camera trap managed to catch any of the action? Suffice to | :18:00. | :18:04.
say, it was not plain sailing. This was the last time we saw our | :18:04. | :18:08.
bird. Perched next to his nest 90 metres up a chimney. It's now May. | :18:08. | :18:11.
Hopefully any eggs have hatched and ornathologist Chris Brown is back | :18:11. | :18:16.
on site. He wants to ring any peregrine falcon chicks so they can | :18:16. | :18:20.
be monitored once they fly the nest. But when we arrive, we learn all | :18:20. | :18:27.
has not gone according to plan. It's been 70 days since we were | :18:28. | :18:30.
last here and unfortunately in that time, the peregrines have switched | :18:30. | :18:35.
nesting site. Now, it's not necessarily bad news for the birds | :18:35. | :18:42.
- we just need to find them. This is what we were hoping to see. Last | :18:42. | :18:47.
year, the same birds raised two chicks in their chimney-top nest. | :18:47. | :18:52.
These are the shots taken when Chris ringed those chicks. But this | :18:52. | :18:55.
time around, it appears the birds have been spooked by essential site | :18:55. | :19:04.
work at the base of the chimney. have a lot of work going on at the | :19:04. | :19:08.
moment. We have been putting a lot of | :19:08. | :19:11.
scaffolding up in the last couple of months. Possibly one reason we | :19:11. | :19:15.
think the birds have moved on. Chris climbs up to check the | :19:15. | :19:18.
abandoned nest. When he's there, he retrieves footage from the wildlife | :19:18. | :19:22.
camera trap. The images it has captured give us hope. The adult | :19:22. | :19:25.
birds are still using the chimney as a perch so the nest must be | :19:25. | :19:31.
close. But try as we might, we just can't | :19:32. | :19:41.
:19:42. | :19:42. | ||
find it. There are a lot of stacks, pylons and man-made cliffs. A lot | :19:42. | :19:44.
of places to look! Finally, three weeks later, we're | :19:44. | :19:48.
back. Two fully grown chicks have been spotted in a nest within a | :19:48. | :19:56.
restricted area of the plant. can see a dark semi-circle ship on | :19:56. | :19:59.
the country itself. That is the nest. | :19:59. | :20:07.
But sadly the workers who spotted the chicks think we're too late. | :20:07. | :20:11.
You have missed the chicks fledging. That is one thing you have missed. | :20:11. | :20:14.
There is two of them. From a crane, Chris confirms it. | :20:14. | :20:18.
Our chicks have flown the nest. What did you see up there? | :20:18. | :20:24.
Unfortunately nothing. The main thing is that they have fledged | :20:24. | :20:28.
successfully. I'm not too concerned about ringing them. I might get | :20:28. | :20:38.
:20:38. | :20:40. | ||
them next year. Since those chicks have fled, they | :20:40. | :20:45.
have been seen flying over these fields to the land you can just see | :20:45. | :20:49.
in the distance, which is brilliant news. That land is owned by the | :20:49. | :20:55.
RSPB, so anyone can watch those birds hunt. Given a little bit of | :20:55. | :21:01.
luck and quite a lot of patients. Just head down to the RSPB and ask | :21:01. | :21:04.
the staff to help you spot them. What a brilliant thing to do with | :21:04. | :21:12.
the kids. And now the sport. | :21:12. | :21:15.
At the World Aquatic Championships in Shanghai, double World Junior | :21:15. | :21:20.
Champion Jack Law found himself in the spotlight today. 16-year-old | :21:20. | :21:23.
Jack, from Harrogate, certainly didn't look out of place and seemed | :21:23. | :21:27.
to be completely unaffected by nerves. He finished eighth in the | :21:27. | :21:30.
three metre springboard final on his World Championship debut - a | :21:30. | :21:33.
sign that British teammate Tom Daley might soon have to share the | :21:33. | :21:38.
media attention. Our Premier League clubs continue | :21:38. | :21:41.
their overseas pre-season tours this weekend. Sunderland complete | :21:42. | :21:44.
their three match stint in Germany tomorrow afternoon with a friendly | :21:44. | :21:47.
at one of the former powerhouses of the Bundesliga, Borussia | :21:47. | :21:49.
Monchengladbach, while Newcastle, who've been enduring an American | :21:49. | :21:57.
heatwave, take on Orlando City in the early hours of Sunday morning. | :21:57. | :22:01.
Back home two months ago, they were celebrating Wembley glory. Now | :22:01. | :22:04.
Darlington are hoping to carry that feelgood factor into the new season | :22:04. | :22:08.
with a return to the Football League high on the agenda. Four new | :22:09. | :22:11.
faces have come into the squad ahead of tomorrow's visit to the | :22:12. | :22:16.
Arena of near neighbours Middlesbrough. | :22:16. | :22:20.
They were scenes Darlington fans will always remember. Now the | :22:20. | :22:23.
Quakers are hoping last season's cup glory will be a springboard for | :22:23. | :22:33.
:22:33. | :22:33. | ||
a promotion push. We finished the season really well last year. We | :22:33. | :22:37.
have to keep that going and keep the belief, keeps the spirit going | :22:37. | :22:42.
amongst the players, the supporters, the staff, the guys that for hear | :22:42. | :22:50.
from last year. Wembley is a constant reminder for us. The four | :22:50. | :22:54.
lads that we have brought in have blended into the grip effortlessly. | :22:54. | :22:56.
The FA Trophy victory over Mansfield brought wild celebrations | :22:56. | :22:59.
for the 9,000 who went to London. Season ticket sales, though, have | :22:59. | :23:02.
been modest - around 1,300. The club had targetted 2,000. But | :23:02. | :23:04.
Cooper is hoping crowds will improve this time, and hopefully | :23:04. | :23:11.
with some much-needed stability off the pitch. We certainly got it at | :23:11. | :23:16.
Wembley. I do not see any reason why we cannot get another 400 or | :23:16. | :23:21.
500 people coming to the Games. I understand the only way to | :23:21. | :23:24.
guarantee that is to keep winning games. You should keep winning on a | :23:24. | :23:28.
consistent basis and people will start to come. | :23:28. | :23:30.
Last week's defeat against Newcastle was overshadowed by crowd | :23:30. | :23:32.
trouble, but Darlington are optimistic there'll be no repeat | :23:32. | :23:42.
when Boro visit the Arena tomorrow. In cricket, relegation-threatened | :23:42. | :23:44.
Yorkshire are making a gallant bid to beat their oldest rivals | :23:44. | :23:53.
Lancashire in the county championship. After bowling the | :23:53. | :23:57.
visitors out for 194 in their second innings, they are doing well | :23:57. | :24:03.
at 80-1, but denied 118 for 4, still needing another 166 runs to | :24:03. | :24:07.
win. Victory for second place like this should not be good news for | :24:08. | :24:11.
Durham, but they have started well in reply to Somerset's's imposing | :24:11. | :24:21.
:24:21. | :24:25. | ||
And now the weather. Will we see any sunshine back here? | :24:25. | :24:29.
I think you will. You could head off to one of the local beaches if | :24:29. | :24:35.
you're not heading off overseas. Maybe even this man made temporary | :24:35. | :24:43.
base -- Beach on Newcastle's quayside. Why go abroad?! You might | :24:43. | :24:47.
notice that virtually everybody on this beach is wearing a hippy, a | :24:47. | :24:53.
jumper, or a cardigan. It is maybe not as warm as it is in many of the | :24:53. | :24:57.
more exotic resorts! How do be fair compared to places across the | :24:57. | :25:07.
:25:07. | :25:07. | ||
Continent? Benidorm is slightly warmer than last! Keswick made 17 | :25:07. | :25:15.
today, will while it was 30 in the Greek islands. 14 Celsius on the | :25:15. | :25:19.
North East coast doesn't really compare very well to Naples - 30 | :25:19. | :25:25.
degrees. As we head through the weekend, closer to home that we can | :25:25. | :25:28.
expect some sunshine. It will be mostly dry, but a better weekend | :25:28. | :25:32.
than the last couple. The winds coming down from the North will | :25:32. | :25:35.
mean we will not break any temperature records on Saturday or | :25:35. | :25:39.
Sunday. This evening and over night, there is a fair amount of cloud | :25:39. | :25:45.
around. One a two showers, but they will drive away. -- die away. It | :25:45. | :25:49.
will be dry for most of us and Chile. Temperatures will dip into | :25:50. | :25:54.
single figures again. Quite a few places will see seven Celsius. One | :25:55. | :25:58.
or two spots in Cumbria will be a bit colder still. Tomorrow will | :25:58. | :26:02.
start off Chile, but mostly drive. You can see good sunny spells | :26:02. | :26:07.
through the morning. One a two showers possible, but most places | :26:07. | :26:12.
stay fine and dry. Find conditions for the Penrith show and for a lady | :26:12. | :26:19.
stay at Newcastle races. Carlisle sees 19 Celsius with a bid of | :26:19. | :26:23.
shelter from the northerly wind. It becomes a bit cooler as you come | :26:23. | :26:26.
further East. There will be some cloud around the North East coast, | :26:26. | :26:29.
and with a northerly wind, you're more likely to stick around about | :26:30. | :26:35.
the 14 Celsius mark at the seaside. It will feel colder in that wind as | :26:35. | :26:39.
well. The reason for the wind is the steep area of low pressure out | :26:39. | :26:43.
to the East. Most of the rain is associated with that and stays out | :26:43. | :26:46.
over the North Sea. It does feed down as cold northerly winds | :26:46. | :26:50.
through the weekend. On Monday, we stay between weather systems and | :26:50. | :26:54.
stay largely drive. The outlook for the North East for the next few | :26:54. | :26:57.
days, mostly dry but some brightness, but temperatures will | :26:57. | :27:03.
struggle in that brisk wind. Cumbria fares a bit better than | :27:03. | :27:06.
everyone else and might actually hit the heady heights of 20 Celsius | :27:06. | :27:12.
Now, a final look at the main national and local headlines. | :27:12. | :27:16.
A massive explosion has rocked Oslo. At least two people died and | :27:17. | :27:20.
several injured in the Norwegian capital. | :27:20. | :27:23.
And on the verge of disaster - a Cumbrian woman's lucky escape when | :27:23. | :27:30. |
