Welcome to Friday's Look North. Coming up. | :00:03. | :00:07.
Jailed for ten years. The disgraced former councillor sentenced for sex | :00:07. | :00:12.
offences against three boys. Also, no pets here. The advice to | :00:12. | :00:16.
dog owners after three deaths at a nature reserve. | :00:16. | :00:19.
The man who helped make the Tyne the best salmon river in England | :00:19. | :00:28.
accuses scientists of putting the river at risk. | :00:28. | :00:33.
I am at one of the biggest free events in Europe at the Sunderland | :00:33. | :00:38.
Airshow. There are more be 1 million people here this weekend. | :00:38. | :00:41.
In sport, we talk to the Brazilian legend Juninho about his Riverside | :00:41. | :00:51.
:00:51. | :00:59. | ||
return ahead of Boro's friendly He was a pillar of society. A | :00:59. | :01:03.
former council chairman. He sexually abused young boys. This | :01:03. | :01:06.
afternoon, Tony Brunskill, a former Eden district councillor, was | :01:06. | :01:11.
jailed for ten years. He preyed on three boys over three decades. Two | :01:11. | :01:14.
were pupils at a school in Lancashire where he was a teacher | :01:14. | :01:18.
in the 1970s. The third was a Cumbrian boy he assaulted between | :01:18. | :01:28.
:01:28. | :01:29. | ||
2008 and 2010. Tony Brunskill sat with his head | :01:29. | :01:33.
bowed as the verdict was read out at Carlisle Crown Court. The | :01:33. | :01:38.
details of the offences against the boys aged between eight and 17 were | :01:38. | :01:46.
harrowing, leaving no doubt about the devastating effect on victims. | :01:46. | :01:52.
Over a period, particular with the Cumbria incident, he knew the | :01:52. | :01:57.
mother. She thought he was acting as a father figure. She is | :01:58. | :02:04.
disgusted by his actions. To see him use his position of trust. | :02:04. | :02:09.
Thankfully, he is now behind bars. It was hard to listen to the | :02:09. | :02:15.
evidence. Yes, even going back to the incidence in the early 1970s. | :02:15. | :02:21.
They were horrific. I could not put myself in place of what the boys | :02:21. | :02:29.
went through. The judge told him your offences are disgusting and | :02:29. | :02:33.
you instigated two campaigns of sustained sexual abuse on two boys | :02:33. | :02:37.
who regarded you as a father figure. The boys will have to live with | :02:37. | :02:43.
what you did to them for the rest of their lives. | :02:43. | :02:46.
Police in Cumbria are looking for a 15-year-old boy who has been | :02:46. | :02:49.
missing for two days. Connor Gordon, from the Appleby area, was last | :02:49. | :02:51.
seen in Carlisle on Wednesday lunchtime. Police ask anyone with | :02:52. | :02:56.
information to contact them. Today is St Olave's Day, the patron | :02:56. | :02:58.
saint of Norway, and at churches throughout the region, tributes | :02:58. | :03:04.
have been paid to those who died in the bombings and shootings. A book | :03:04. | :03:07.
of condolence has been opened at the Norwegian Consulate in | :03:07. | :03:10.
Newcastle for people to express their sympathy. In York, prayers at | :03:10. | :03:17.
St Olave's Church on Mary Gate, for the families of those who died. 76 | :03:17. | :03:21.
candles were lit. One for each of those killed in Oslo and on Utoya | :03:22. | :03:31.
:03:32. | :03:33. | ||
Island. The priest in charge says today is a poignant day. It is St | :03:33. | :03:38.
Olave's Day today, the patron saint of Norway. It is difficult because | :03:38. | :03:42.
the world moves on and the people of Norway are stuck one week later | :03:42. | :03:47.
with their deep grief. Anybody who has grieved knows what that is like. | :03:47. | :03:54.
To have national grief is truly beyond comprehension. | :03:54. | :03:57.
Keep your dogs away is the advice to pet owners near Scarborough | :03:57. | :04:02.
after a number of suspicious deaths at a nature reserve. Yorkshire | :04:02. | :04:06.
Wildlife Trust have stepped in and are investigating. In the meantime, | :04:06. | :04:14.
they have warned dog owners to stay away. | :04:14. | :04:18.
They are neighbours and dog lovers. They have both seen their animals | :04:18. | :04:23.
die within 20 minutes of being walked here at the nature reserve | :04:23. | :04:29.
near Scarborough. Colin Richardson's dog died in 2007. Now | :04:29. | :04:35.
a German shepherd has also died. It happened at the end of June. It was | :04:35. | :04:40.
an horrific experience. He had been in the water and when he came out | :04:40. | :04:47.
he collapsed. He convulsed and was foaming at the mouth. My wife | :04:47. | :04:52.
brought the car down and I managed to carry him. He was alive at that | :04:52. | :04:56.
point. We have the short journey back home. By the time we got there, | :04:56. | :05:01.
he had died. Following the deaths, notices have been put up warning | :05:01. | :05:05.
owners there might be a danger. Testing will be done by Yorkshire | :05:05. | :05:10.
Wildlife Trust. Both men are worried their dogs could have been | :05:10. | :05:15.
poisoned after strychnine was found across hills near Keith Lee, where | :05:15. | :05:23.
16 dogs have died recently. I did some research into how my dog died | :05:23. | :05:28.
and the only conclusion I can come to, with the speed that they were | :05:28. | :05:32.
killed, is strychnine poisoning. I think somebody is putting | :05:32. | :05:36.
strychnine down here, without a doubt. Water samples have been | :05:37. | :05:41.
taken for analysis. Scarborough Borough Council is monitoring the | :05:41. | :05:45.
situation. Dog owners are warned to be vigilant while investigations | :05:45. | :05:50.
are carried out. Until there are test results, the mystery | :05:50. | :05:57.
surrounding the deaths of the dogs remained very worrying. | :05:57. | :06:00.
It is one of the biggest free events in Europe and around a | :06:00. | :06:03.
million people are expected to turn out. Sunderland's International Air | :06:03. | :06:06.
Show takes place tomorrow and Sunday, with more than eight hours | :06:06. | :06:11.
of flying displays and plenty more. The preparations are almost | :06:11. | :06:21.
:06:21. | :06:23. | ||
complete. Our reporter joins us live. | :06:23. | :06:27.
We can hear over my head one of the aircraft going off. People are here | :06:27. | :06:34.
already. Some of the aircraft are here. And cross your fingers, the | :06:34. | :06:39.
sunshine is here. This is one of the biggest events in the North | :06:39. | :06:44.
East. It attracts thousands of people. They have been here since | :06:44. | :06:49.
11am, waiting to see the action over the weekend. I have been | :06:49. | :06:59.
:06:59. | :07:23. | ||
taking a look at what has happened Final preparations today for one of | :07:23. | :07:29.
the biggest free events in Europe. It started as a small event in 1988, | :07:29. | :07:34.
and now 1 million people visit every year. What are they looking | :07:34. | :07:41.
forward to? It gets bigger every year. It takes your breath away. It | :07:41. | :07:51.
:07:51. | :07:54. | ||
is fantastic. Big aeroplanes? Everything. It is a get together. | :07:54. | :07:58.
People like the crowds. There are shops and it is marvellous. You are | :07:59. | :08:05.
excited already. I am shaking! Although RAF jets and the Red | :08:05. | :08:08.
Arrows will not fly because of operational reasons, there is | :08:08. | :08:16.
plenty to do. We have a fun packed arena entertainment. We have Royal | :08:16. | :08:22.
Marine commandos and sea cadets. We have the RAF, the army on site, | :08:22. | :08:29.
doing ground displays. We have about 120 exhibitors. There are | :08:29. | :08:35.
treats for children of all shapes and sizes. I feel like a small boy | :08:35. | :08:41.
is sitting in here. Give us some basic facts about this aircraft. | :08:41. | :08:48.
can be deployed on a full spectrum of air operations, from air | :08:48. | :08:51.
policing to peace support to intensity of conflict. Where are | :08:51. | :08:59.
the keys? LAUGHTER I never could find the | :08:59. | :09:04.
ignition. This is a big operation. It takes a long time to organise. | :09:04. | :09:12.
The woman who has been organising this is the director of the event. | :09:12. | :09:21.
Give us an idea of what we can see. We have eight hours of flying. We | :09:21. | :09:25.
have an Arena programme. We start tonight with 10CC and the band of | :09:25. | :09:29.
the RAF. The Red Arrows are not here but there is a lot of other | :09:29. | :09:36.
things. We have two other displayed teams in the skies. We have the | :09:36. | :09:43.
Vulcan, which is magnificent. is huge. You see it coming from | :09:43. | :09:51.
miles away. How much is it worth to the region? It is a free event, but | :09:51. | :09:56.
it brings money into the economy. It brings a huge amount into the | :09:56. | :10:02.
economy, it into the region as well as Sunderland. We estimate 12 | :10:02. | :10:08.
million of additional income. crucial question about the event is | :10:08. | :10:14.
will the weather stay like this? This is fantastic. We could not | :10:15. | :10:21.
have asked for a better start. Will it last? I will have a forecast | :10:21. | :10:25.
later in the programme. The man credited with turning the | :10:25. | :10:28.
Tyne into the best salmon river in the country says the Government is | :10:28. | :10:31.
leaving the river at risk. Peter Gray says the risk comes because | :10:31. | :10:33.
his former employer, the Environment Agency, is under- | :10:33. | :10:39.
utilising its famous Kielder salmon hatchery. The agency says the river | :10:39. | :10:44.
is largely self-sustaining. A book written by Mr Gray, published | :10:44. | :10:54.
tomorrow, is likely to cause controversy among conservationists. | :10:54. | :11:01.
Our reporter has the story. Peter Gray is the first to admit he | :11:01. | :11:08.
caused problems for his own -- old bosses. 50 years ago, not a single | :11:08. | :11:13.
salmon was caught on the River Tyne, and now, look at this video shot by | :11:13. | :11:20.
a viewer. What is the problem? have got a healthy river Tyne, but | :11:20. | :11:28.
it is not perfect. If we have a summer like 2003, there is a risk | :11:28. | :11:33.
of disasters happening. If you have Kielder hatchery, you have the | :11:33. | :11:38.
back-up to repair the damage immediately. We can cope with | :11:38. | :11:42.
anything like that on the River Tyne, only if the hatchery is | :11:42. | :11:48.
running at capacity. He is the man who made this place work. The | :11:48. | :11:51.
process he perfected for rearing young salmon is the model for the | :11:51. | :11:57.
rest of the world. The idea was to make up for spawning grounds lost | :11:57. | :12:03.
when Kielder dam was built. But he says the hatchery success has been | :12:03. | :12:08.
underplayed by the Environment Agency. The reason I was given is | :12:08. | :12:13.
that if we reported the success we were having on the River Tyne, | :12:14. | :12:20.
every other region in England and Wales, it would demand a hatchery | :12:20. | :12:28.
as we have. I was told we are not having that. The agency says the | :12:28. | :12:32.
river is self-sustaining, a reflection of hard work from all | :12:32. | :12:36.
quarters. Peter Gray says that while the criticism will not be | :12:36. | :12:40.
welcomed, he hopes it will be listened to. | :12:41. | :12:43.
It was back in 1987 when Japanese excavating company Komatsu opened a | :12:44. | :12:49.
factory at Birtley in Gateshead. In 1991, Gateshead twinned with the | :12:49. | :12:59.
:12:59. | :13:00. | ||
company's namesake, the town of Komatsu. It is an important | :13:00. | :13:06.
employer, providing several jobs for the area. 20 years later, the | :13:06. | :13:12.
towns are celebrating their blossoming friendship. | :13:12. | :13:18.
The new friendship garden at park macro in Gateshead is a gift from | :13:18. | :13:24.
Komatsu and a place of tranquillity and calm -- Saltwell Park. Except | :13:24. | :13:34.
:13:34. | :13:36. | ||
for today. It is about understanding our cultures and | :13:36. | :13:41.
appreciating each other. There is a friendship garden in both places | :13:41. | :13:46.
and that has to be worthwhile. design team have members from | :13:46. | :13:55.
Gateshead and the town of Komatsu. TRANSLATION: This garden and will | :13:55. | :14:00.
make our friendship stronger and in 20 years' time I am sure it will | :14:00. | :14:09.
help our friendship be much stronger. The opening of the | :14:09. | :14:13.
friendship garden coincides with Gateshead Flower Show, which is on | :14:13. | :14:23.
:14:23. | :14:29. | ||
this weekend. And the Japanese theme continues there. | :14:29. | :14:34.
We are heading back to the Sunderland International Airshow. | :14:34. | :14:42.
Our reporter is there. I think we are ready for take-off. | :14:43. | :14:48.
There are many events going on. There will be many pilots up in the | :14:48. | :14:53.
skies today. One in particular will be part of the displays. It is a | :14:53. | :14:56.
homecoming. It is something of a homecoming for | :14:56. | :14:59.
one man who will be flying this weekend. Lieutenant David Fleming | :14:59. | :15:02.
from the Royal Navy is a pilot in the Black Cats helicopter display | :15:02. | :15:04.
team. He is from Bedlington, Northumberland. He went to | :15:04. | :15:14.
:15:14. | :15:15. | ||
Newcastle's Royal Grammar School. Earlier, he took off from Newcastle | :15:15. | :15:22.
Airport to give us a pilot's eye view from the sky. Newcastle. I | :15:22. | :15:29.
have been away for a while, but it is good to be back home. We fly | :15:29. | :15:34.
Lynx helicopters on the displays with two people on board. Myself as | :15:34. | :15:44.
pilot and an observer. The Lynx has the world speed record for a | :15:44. | :15:51.
helicopter. It travels at 170 miles per hour. Within moments of taking | :15:51. | :15:57.
off from Newcastle Airport, we can see the River Tyne. We will follow | :15:57. | :16:01.
the river to the mouth of the River Tyne. It looks different from this | :16:01. | :16:11.
:16:11. | :16:24. | ||
point of view. Next, we head for Sunderland. We can already see the | :16:24. | :16:28.
beaches of the seafront. They will be packed when we return tomorrow | :16:28. | :16:31.
and Sunday. There are a lot of people working to get things ready. | :16:31. | :16:36.
Let's hope for good weather. This is Lieutenant David Fleming for BBC | :16:36. | :16:45.
Look North. It is not only aircraft in the | :16:45. | :16:50.
skies this weekend. The event kicks off in 15 minutes with music from | :16:50. | :16:56.
the band of the Royal Air Force Regiment. The director of the band | :16:56. | :17:04.
is with me now. What is on the programme? The weekend is about a | :17:04. | :17:08.
celebration of everything in the sky so we will have the Spitfire | :17:08. | :17:13.
Prelude. We will do the best of the Royal Air Force, Those magnificent | :17:13. | :17:18.
men in the Flying Machines. And, dam Busters. Classics to get the | :17:18. | :17:23.
crowd. We will let you get off and prepare. There are different types | :17:23. | :17:29.
of music tonight. And one of my favourite bands was at 10CC in my | :17:29. | :17:35.
youth. Graham Gouldman is here. You will be playing today. Many people | :17:35. | :17:39.
will be watching this. Many romantic encounters were brought | :17:39. | :17:48.
together from your tracks! We will definitely be doing I am andy, Fly | :17:48. | :17:58.
:17:58. | :18:04. | ||
Have you played an Airshow before? No. Last week we played at | :18:04. | :18:10.
Silverstone. We were competing with cars, which was fun. But, we do | :18:10. | :18:16.
play unusual venues. It is always interesting to do. It looks like it | :18:16. | :18:21.
will be a great evening. You never get bored with the music business? | :18:21. | :18:27.
No. I do not know why. If I did not enjoy it, I would not do it. | :18:27. | :18:33.
will be back here in a few minutes' time with more from the Airshow, | :18:33. | :18:41.
including live music. I cannot wait for that. I used to | :18:41. | :18:51.
:18:51. | :18:52. | ||
love 10CC. That shows my age. Many more thrills to be had. Yes. | :18:52. | :18:54.
In his three spells on Teesside, Middlesbrough footballer Juninho | :18:54. | :18:57.
was hailed a legend. Tonight, the Brazilian is back, aged 38, playing | :18:57. | :19:00.
in a friendly against PSV Eindhoven. The little fella, as Teesside knew | :19:00. | :19:04.
him, is likely to come off the bench in the second half. Ian Reeve | :19:04. | :19:11.
is at Middlesbrough's Riverside Stadium. | :19:11. | :19:15.
It has been a canny move of Middlesbrough to bring back a | :19:15. | :19:18.
legend to shift many thousands of tickets that would not have been | :19:18. | :19:24.
sold had he not been playing. There are many fans in the stadium for a | :19:24. | :19:29.
game that kicks off at 7:30pm. They are keen to see him in the red and | :19:30. | :19:33.
white of Middlesbrough again. Incredible as it may seem, not | :19:33. | :19:39.
everybody thinks it is a great idea. Osvaldo Giroldo Junior, better | :19:39. | :19:49.
:19:49. | :19:52. | ||
known as Juninho. Signed three times by Middlesbrough, in 2007 | :19:52. | :20:00.
voted the club's best ever. He is back to play in a friendly. It is | :20:00. | :20:07.
marvellous. One of the best moments of my career. The title of the | :20:07. | :20:12.
Carlingcott, there are many things to remember ables stock and to a | :20:12. | :20:22.
:20:22. | :20:22. | ||
still remember you. I hope so. I remember them. He is a | :20:22. | :20:31.
legend. It is nice for the fans. He has the opportunity to say goodbye, | :20:31. | :20:36.
which he did not have before. everybody thinks his appearance is | :20:36. | :20:42.
a good idea. Another legend says it is a PR stunt. We have one week | :20:42. | :20:50.
before we play Portsmouth. And to turn it into a carnival, I think it | :20:50. | :20:55.
is not professional. Not a good idea. The idea of his return is | :20:55. | :20:59.
thought to have come from Middlesbrough's commercial | :20:59. | :21:04.
department, not the manager and coaches. If it was me and Tony | :21:04. | :21:10.
Mowbray said Juninho had flown in, I would not install him. Will fans | :21:10. | :21:17.
care about such things? Will it be enough to see a returning hero. The | :21:17. | :21:23.
turnout tonight will probably tell us. The club says they have sold | :21:23. | :21:28.
15,000 tickets in advance and more thousands are turning up to play on | :21:28. | :21:33.
the turn style. It is a reasonable 10 to say goodbye for a fourth | :21:33. | :21:42.
time to the silky skills of Juninho. You have 40 minutes if you want to | :21:42. | :21:45.
get to that match. More visa trouble for Newcastle | :21:46. | :21:49.
United. It is understood that instead of flying back with the | :21:49. | :21:52.
rest of the squad from the Magpies' tour of the US, midfielder Cheik | :21:52. | :21:56.
Tiote flew to Ghana to sort out a visa issue. He will miss Sunday's | :21:56. | :22:00.
friendly at Leeds. In athletics, Teesside's Chris | :22:00. | :22:02.
Tomlinson, the newBritish long-jump record holder, is competing | :22:02. | :22:06.
tomorrow. He goes head to head with his long-term rival Greg Rutherford | :22:06. | :22:10.
at the Aviva UK Trials and Championships in Birmingham. | :22:10. | :22:13.
Between them, they have shared the national title for the past seven | :22:13. | :22:17.
years and Tomlinson regained it two weeks ago. He will be looking to | :22:17. | :22:20.

India are 24-1. But, a dramatic victory for Sri Lanka et al for | :22:44. | :22:54.

Excellent. That is all from us in the studio for tonight. We can go | :22:58. | :23:05.
back to Sunderland. The success of the Airshow depends on the weather. | :23:05. | :23:13.
What will it be like? It is really important, the weather | :23:13. | :23:18.
for an event like this. We have beautiful blue skies on the | :23:18. | :23:23.
seafront. Crucially, we are expecting them to last most of the | :23:23. | :23:30.
weekend. We can look across the region. We have bright spells to | :23:30. | :23:37.
look forward to. Generally, a fine forecast. Through this evening and | :23:37. | :23:43.
overnight it will stay clear. Some evening sunshine in Sunderland and | :23:43. | :23:50.
across the North East and Cumbria. Tomorrow morning, dry everywhere. | :23:50. | :23:55.
It will be a nice morning across the Pennines and Cumbria will see | :23:55. | :24:00.
the best of the sunshine, with some great blues skies across the Lake | :24:00. | :24:05.
District and Cumbrian coast. On the Sunderland coast it could be cloudy | :24:05. | :24:13.
at times, but generally find and dry. -- fine. The top temperature | :24:13. | :24:18.
tomorrow will be 20 degrees. It will feel like summer and it will | :24:18. | :24:25.
feel warm. It will be cooler on the Northumbrian coast. Over the next | :24:25. | :24:30.
few days, we can look at the forecast for Sunday and Monday, and | :24:30. | :24:35.
it turns unsettled for a time on Sunday. Maybe some showers in | :24:35. | :24:41.
Cumbria. In the North East, staying fine through much of Sunday. We hit | :24:41. | :24:49.
21 degrees. And Magic 70 in Fahrenheit. On Monday, more | :24:50. | :24:55.
unsettled. There is a lot going on this weekend. We have the Airshow | :24:55. | :25:02.
and the lifeboat event in Northumberland. We expect that to | :25:02. | :25:07.
beat dry for the lifeboat displays. The top temperature will be no more | :25:07. | :25:13.
than 17 degrees. In the West, we have the agricultural show. A | :25:13. | :25:16.
have the agricultural show. A beautiful day for this event at the | :25:16. | :25:26.
:25:26. | :25:26. | ||
Showground. And let's look at the important forecast for the | :25:26. | :25:33.
Sunderland International airshow 2011. We are not expecting the | :25:33. | :25:39.
North Sea fog that can drift in at this time of year. It could be | :25:39. | :25:43.
cloudy at times on Sunday. Probably the best of the sunshine will be | :25:43. | :25:53.
:25:53. | :25:56. | ||
tomorrow. At times, it could feel cool. We are not expecting any of | :25:56. | :26:01.
the awful sea fog that rolls in. It happens when warm air roles in over | :26:01. | :26:06.
the cold North Sea. The air rises and forms the mist that you can see | :26:06. | :26:12.
over the coast. It will not happen. Beautiful where that at the Airshow | :26:12. | :26:14.
at the moment and much of the at the moment and much of the | :26:14. | :26:20.
weekend. We like the sound of the forecast. | :26:20. | :26:26.
In a few minutes, we will give you a special musical treat to play out | :26:26. | :26:30.
to night's Look North. Please try to get down for the | :26:30. | :26:36.
Airshow tomorrow and Sunday. If you cannot, it will be on BBC Radio | :26:36. | :26:41.
Newcastle all weekend, the official radio station of the Airshow. We | :26:41. | :26:46.
will bring you traffic and weather Updates and we will put photographs | :26:46. | :26:54.
on the website from the event. There are lots of ways to get | :26:55. | :26:58.
involved. We have had a great time. Do come | :26:58. | :27:04. |
