Welcome to Friday's Look North. Tonight, calls for a quick | :00:10. | :00:12.
investigation into the arrest and suspension of Cleveland's top two | :00:12. | :00:15.
police officers. After three days of questions, the force reveals | :00:15. | :00:18.
who's now running operations. We've lost two top people from the | :00:18. | :00:22.
force. We are hurting. That doesn't affect the way we all do the job. | :00:22. | :00:24.
The growing problem of post- traumatic stress among soldiers and | :00:24. | :00:31.
the domestic violence it leads to. I am here at the river with the | :00:31. | :00:35.
biggest cargo ship which has ever sailed into the Port of Tyne. | :00:35. | :00:38.
And senior service - how old commandos have once again responded | :00:38. | :00:43.
to the call of duty, but like you've never seen before. | :00:43. | :00:46.
In sport, May seems like only yesterday, but the new Football | :00:46. | :00:49.
League season kicks off tomorrow. And we'll hear from the managers, | :00:49. | :00:52.
including this man who wants to add a promotion campaign to Wembley | :00:52. | :01:02.
:01:02. | :01:09. | ||
Three days after the two top officers at Cleveland Police were | :01:09. | :01:12.
arrested and suspended, the force has revealed how it's running | :01:12. | :01:19.
operations without its senior figures. Sean Price and Derek | :01:19. | :01:21.
Bonnard were questioned on Wednesday over allegations of | :01:21. | :01:24.
corruption and bailed. Tonight, one Teesside MP called for a quick | :01:24. | :01:31.
investigation. Mary Askew has been following developments and is in | :01:31. | :01:37.
Middlesbrough tonight. We have been asking this question for three days | :01:37. | :01:41.
but who is in charge tonight? interesting thing is that nobody is | :01:41. | :01:45.
allowed to stand in as a Chief Constable when there is already a | :01:45. | :01:49.
Chief Constable on the pay roll. Kevan's chief, Sean Price, is | :01:50. | :01:54.
getting paid quite handsomely by the force. So the police a body has | :01:54. | :02:02.
got round this to light by promoting acting, Assistant Chief | :02:02. | :02:05.
Constable Dave Pickard and bringing in people behind him to help him | :02:05. | :02:09.
out. It is little surprise that the pace of Broady has been at pains to | :02:09. | :02:15.
say that amid the turmoil the force is still in safe hands. | :02:15. | :02:21.
I have absolute confidence in the team, David Pickard, where Shaun | :02:21. | :02:24.
White and Ann Hall, will lead the team through this quite difficult | :02:24. | :02:29.
situation we are in, probably unprecedented situation. People | :02:29. | :02:33.
need to know out there that, despite all the turmoil, despite | :02:33. | :02:43.
:02:43. | :02:43. | ||
all the terrible things that appear to be happening the 1500 or so of | :02:43. | :02:46.
police people out there doing the job has not changed and their | :02:46. | :02:50.
commitment has not changed. We have lost two top people from the force. | :02:50. | :02:55.
We are hurting. That doesn't affect the way we all do the job. | :02:55. | :03:00.
All this is costing money, isn't it? It is, and thankfully it is | :03:00. | :03:04.
money that Cleveland Police has not got. Even before this all kicked | :03:04. | :03:09.
off, the force was Hamid to make cuts to the tune of 70 million to | :03:09. | :03:13.
make its books balance. With those -- for those of fear with long | :03:13. | :03:18.
memories will remember Operation Lancet, another investigation into | :03:18. | :03:22.
corruption more than a decade ago. It cost millions of pounds and it | :03:22. | :03:27.
is the prospect of another Bill like that that is causing concern. | :03:27. | :03:30.
We know it is a difficult time. Police budgets are under pressure. | :03:30. | :03:34.
It is important at this operation doesn't get out of hand and does | :03:34. | :03:38.
not start to look like Operation Lancet which cost millions of | :03:38. | :03:42.
pounds and took far too long. Every pound spent on this investigation | :03:42. | :03:47.
is a pound they should be spent on von unpoliced intimate Teessider | :03:47. | :03:51.
safer place. Everybody would agree we won this over and done with as | :03:51. | :03:56.
soon as possible. Everybody is waiting to see whether or not | :03:56. | :03:59.
prevent's top two police officers appeal against their suspension, | :03:59. | :04:05.
and they have until Wednesday to do that. | :04:05. | :04:08.
Is enough being done to help soldiers traumatised by their time | :04:08. | :04:11.
in battle when they get home? Linda Adams thinks not. She was attacked | :04:11. | :04:14.
by her husband Dave after he served in Iraq. One night, he caused | :04:14. | :04:17.
35,000 worth of damage to their home at Bedale in North Yorkshire. | :04:17. | :04:20.
A recent study suggests domestic violence by former soldiers is | :04:20. | :04:28.
increasing. More on that in a moment, but first Linda's story. | :04:28. | :04:34.
She says those returning from duty need more help. | :04:34. | :04:44.
:04:44. | :04:44. | ||
He went to Iraq in 2003, came back in 2004. September of that year, we | :04:44. | :04:52.
were due to go out with friends and when I returned, I am was met by a | :04:52. | :04:56.
hint saying you can't go home, the police have been called and | :04:57. | :05:06.
basically he had obliterated our home. And then Christmassy, -- | :05:06. | :05:13.
Christmas Eve, he actually got physical with me and punched me. So | :05:13. | :05:20.
I had facial damage and teeth knocked out. It was a shock. And | :05:20. | :05:25.
the thing is, I didn't hit him back, I didn't throw anything, I didn't | :05:26. | :05:30.
go for him. I just looked him straight in the face and said, you | :05:30. | :05:38.
should not have done that. And I turned my back and walked away. I | :05:38. | :05:41.
have only just recently, in the last few months, found that some of | :05:41. | :05:46.
the things that he had seen and that had happened. Seen children | :05:46. | :05:54.
blown up. That must be enough to get to anybody, with the loss of | :05:54. | :05:58.
two or like army personnel hard. Some psychiatrists and people have | :05:58. | :06:02.
been to see him, but I don't think they understood exactly what was | :06:02. | :06:09.
wrong. Every time there has been an incident and I have had to call the | :06:09. | :06:17.
police and had him taken away, it has been hard. But on the end of | :06:17. | :06:21.
the restatement, I have always put, it is not punishment that he needs, | :06:21. | :06:26.
it is mental health. We have got a long struggle ahead of us. But he | :06:26. | :06:31.
has given me so much in the past. I am not prepared to back down or | :06:31. | :06:35.
give up on him now. That was Linda's experience, and it | :06:35. | :06:38.
seems she's not alone. A new report from the National Association of | :06:38. | :06:40.
Probation Officers shows more than 8,000 ex-members of the military | :06:40. | :06:44.
are in prison. And half of veterans given community service suffer from | :06:44. | :06:50.
post-traumatic stress disorder. Well, the Ministry of Defence says | :06:50. | :06:53.
it operates a range of measures to tackle mental health issues among | :06:53. | :06:55.
the armed forces. And according to the Royal British Legion, | :06:55. | :06:57.
psychological problems among ex- service people are becoming more | :06:57. | :07:07.
:07:07. | :07:08. | ||
common. We are seeing considerably more people coming to us with | :07:08. | :07:13.
really complex needs now, as a charity, and those needs are often | :07:13. | :07:15.
aggravated by psychological problems, things like sleep | :07:15. | :07:20.
disorder, alcohol and drug disorder, perhaps anxiety order person. But | :07:20. | :07:24.
also we are seeing an increasing number of people who are showing | :07:24. | :07:28.
signs of post-traumatic stress disorder. | :07:28. | :07:32.
A body has been found in undergrowth in Tynemouth. The body, | :07:32. | :07:36.
which is believed to be of a man in his 50s, was found in Priors Haven | :07:36. | :07:39.
off Priors Road last night. The police are treating the death as | :07:39. | :07:42.
unexplained. The brother of Sunderland | :07:42. | :07:45.
footballer Titus Bramble has been jailed for four and a half years | :07:45. | :07:50.
after being convicted of rape. Tesfaye Bramble, who's 31, attacked | :07:50. | :07:53.
a 19-year-old woman at the Vermont Hotel in Newcastle following a | :07:53. | :07:57.
night out. Around 100 were evacuated from | :07:57. | :08:01.
their homes after a gas explosion in Hartlepool this lunchtime. Fire | :08:01. | :08:04.
crews were called to the derelict house in Sheriff Street at around | :08:04. | :08:09.
1pm this lunchtime. The explosion happened after they arrived. A 50- | :08:09. | :08:11.
metre cordon was placed around the property and three neighbouring | :08:11. | :08:20.
streets were closed. One woman is being treated in hospital. | :08:20. | :08:24.
Upon arrival, we were talking to residents in the street and, | :08:24. | :08:28.
unfortunately, a gas explosion occurred and one of the residence | :08:28. | :08:32.
was covered in glass from the explosion. She was treated by the | :08:32. | :08:35.
ambulance on scene and taken away for precautionary treatment in | :08:35. | :08:39.
hospital. It is more than the length of two | :08:39. | :08:43.
football pitches and is the biggest cargo vessel ever to berth at the | :08:43. | :08:46.
Port of Tyne. The Alam Penting arrived here last night with his | :08:46. | :08:53.
huge load of, guess what, coal. Damian O'Neill is at the Port of | :08:53. | :08:56.
Tyne. Welcome to a really lovely evening | :08:56. | :09:02.
down here at the river. There she is. A very impressive -- impressive | :09:02. | :09:07.
sight. Fresh from her voyage from America. All day, the cranes have | :09:07. | :09:12.
been unloading the Skacel cargo of coal, which if memory serves me | :09:12. | :09:21.
correctly, is something we used to produce here and reasonable amounts. | :09:21. | :09:26.
It represents a significant milestone for the Port of Tyne. | :09:26. | :09:33.
She is the Alam Penting and at 229 metres long, well over two football | :09:33. | :09:38.
pitches, the biggest ever cargo vessel to berth at the Port of Tyne. | :09:38. | :09:44.
Those with a sense of irony or notes her cargo, 75,000 tonnes of | :09:44. | :09:47.
Wood from New Orleans. It is the biggest volume of a single cargo | :09:47. | :09:52.
ever handled on this river, coal that is bound for power stations in | :09:52. | :09:56.
Yorkshire. It requires about 40 ft depth of water to get any year, | :09:56. | :10:00.
another record for the Tyne for stock but it is not just for this | :10:00. | :10:03.
reason they have been investing millions in dredging the river | :10:03. | :10:10.
recently. It now means the Port of Tyne is capable of handling 80% of | :10:10. | :10:16.
the world's carrier fleet. The Tyne saw some of the biggest ships in | :10:16. | :10:19.
our maritime history. This one might not stir the soul, but the | :10:19. | :10:29.
:10:29. | :10:30. | ||
port believes thinking ever-bigger will secure its future. | :10:30. | :10:34.
This is the best you you're going to get off this vessel. But if you | :10:34. | :10:38.
want to see her in full effect, she is expected to leave her birth, | :10:38. | :10:42.
Sale back down the river and out to see some time on Monday afternoon. | :10:42. | :10:49.
So if you are in the area and you get the chance, as well worth it. | :10:49. | :10:54.
Plenty still to come tonight. Jo Jackson on her Olympic dreams, plus | :10:54. | :10:58.
the artist determined to continue painting despite losing the use of | :10:58. | :11:05.
his hands. And in the forecast, the weather's | :11:05. | :11:08.
timings are all wrong. Gorgeous at the moment but a wet weekend coming | :11:08. | :11:17.
Come riposte but problems with a tin are well-documented. Millions | :11:17. | :11:20.
of pounds has been spent in the county on flood prevention in | :11:20. | :11:25.
places like Carlyle and West Cumbria. Today, a 5.5 million | :11:25. | :11:28.
scheme to protect hundreds of homes and businesses in Penrith was | :11:28. | :11:35.
officially unveiled. A new wetland nature reserve. A | :11:35. | :11:40.
haven for wildlife and people. But it is really a huge reservoir which | :11:40. | :11:44.
will hold a lot of excess water when the Cumbrian rain does its | :11:44. | :11:50.
worst. In 2005, there was serious flooding in parts of town. It is | :11:50. | :11:55.
hoped that will not now be repeated. We can never say that budding will | :11:55. | :12:00.
not happen, but we will reduce the risk in Penrith significantly. | :12:00. | :12:04.
Behind me you can see the fun storage reservoir we have great it | :12:04. | :12:12.
up river. Throughout the town, we have repaired and replaced 675 | :12:12. | :12:17.
metres worth of coal but through the town centre itself. People were | :12:17. | :12:21.
out enjoying the Reserve today. is absolutely brilliant. We are | :12:21. | :12:25.
helping the people of Penrith not to be flooded and at the same time | :12:25. | :12:29.
we are making this fantastic nature reserve, so people in Penrith are | :12:29. | :12:32.
winning twice over. A quarter is great as long enough as it is not | :12:32. | :12:41.
damaging your home. Be determined artist left unable to | :12:41. | :12:44.
use his hands as it battles multiple sclerosis is holding his | :12:44. | :12:49.
first exhibition after learning to paint again with his mouth. As a | :12:49. | :12:53.
teenager, Norman Hirst studied at art college block -- before working | :12:53. | :12:57.
as a professional photographer. Now, after just three years of mouth | :12:57. | :13:01.
painted, the 65-year-old boss man work is going on display at | :13:01. | :13:04.
Victoria Lodge Care home in Sunderland. | :13:04. | :13:08.
Hundreds and thousands of tiny brushstrokes, the remarkable and | :13:08. | :13:16.
patient wait -- work of Norman Hurst. I have the paintings I did | :13:16. | :13:19.
when I produce my hands on the wall over there. Once they would have | :13:19. | :13:24.
all been painted by hand. But MS made that impossible. The on the | :13:24. | :13:33.
other wall are paintings using a brush in my mouth. Sir it hasn't | :13:33. | :13:39.
stopped him. There has always been a longing to be able to do it again. | :13:39. | :13:43.
So when the opportunity came, I thought I would have a go with my | :13:43. | :13:48.
mouth. A after a highly creative career that included taking some of | :13:48. | :13:52.
the last photographs of Donald Campbell before his historic Blue | :13:52. | :13:57.
boat crash, this is now Norman's way of expressing himself. It is | :13:57. | :14:06.
very difficult to hold a brush steady enough, so I could quite | :14:06. | :14:10.
easily ruin the painting. paintings are going on display at a | :14:10. | :14:16.
care home on Friday, 26th August. think it will provide an | :14:16. | :14:20.
inspiration to people in Norman's situation. If you have MS or any | :14:21. | :14:27.
other illness, you still have the ability to create something. Other | :14:27. | :14:32.
people can get satisfaction and even inspiration to do it | :14:32. | :14:42.
:14:42. | :14:46. | ||
themselves. Then it has done the Another thing incredible is the | :14:46. | :14:50.
start of the Football League season! It seems like just | :14:50. | :14:55.
yesterday. Let's start in the Championship. For Middlesbrough it | :14:55. | :14:59.
is the earliest they have ever kicked off. They finished last | :14:59. | :15:03.
season strongly after flirting with relegation before Tony Mowbray | :15:03. | :15:09.
arrived. With 13 fewer players, the fans can be excused for feeling a | :15:09. | :15:19.
:15:19. | :15:24. | ||
Middlesbrough finished last season on a high. They won their last four | :15:24. | :15:30.
games. Fans are expecting great things this season, but a baker's | :15:30. | :15:35.
dozen of players have left. The latest was Julio Arca. The | :15:35. | :15:39.
financial reality means Tony Mowbray face is what he calls a | :15:39. | :15:48.
very competitive and unpredictable league with a leaning, young squad. | :15:48. | :15:51.
We hope to be key -- we hold the key the fitness as good as it is, | :15:51. | :15:57.
add one or two players as we go along, promotion is not a word we | :15:57. | :16:05.
need to talk about. We will get a feel-good factor at the Riverside | :16:05. | :16:10.
Stadium. Tony Mowbray is delighted that Marvin Emnes has extended his | :16:10. | :16:15.
contract. He hopes that others will do the same. He is a real talent, | :16:15. | :16:21.
with the ball at his speech he can do things other players cannot. We | :16:21. | :16:24.
are delighted he sees this as the place where he wants to continue | :16:24. | :16:28.
his development. Middlesbrough will kick off with a game against | :16:28. | :16:38.
:16:38. | :16:43. | ||
Portsmouth, at team that was in A solid mid-table finish in League | :16:43. | :16:48.
One only tells half the story of Carlisle's last campaign. There was | :16:48. | :16:52.
the Wembley victory in the Trophy final. No wonder there is a | :16:52. | :16:58.
shortage -- no wonder there is no shortage of optimism. I am really | :16:58. | :17:04.
optimistic. In the shadow of their stadium, the team make preparations, | :17:04. | :17:12.
watched over by their manager who is quietly confident. We have some | :17:12. | :17:19.
good players, players we not out, players we hope will give us more | :17:19. | :17:25.
strength in depth. They will give us the consistency we are looking | :17:25. | :17:28.
for to make us got little better than we did last year. That was not | :17:29. | :17:34.
bad, but with these additions hopefully we have a bit more | :17:34. | :17:40.
strength in depth. Outside of Greg Abbott's control, a series of | :17:40. | :17:44.
costly break-ins, with a thief making off with diesel fuel and | :17:44. | :17:50.
equipment. The value of it is a concern to the club, but also a lot | :17:50. | :17:53.
more work for us to do at the beginning of the season, Saturday | :17:53. | :17:58.
is almost upon us and we could do without this work. The money it | :17:58. | :18:04.
will cost to process the claim, it makes it almost impossible. How can | :18:04. | :18:07.
we buy players and spend money Updating the facility when we face | :18:08. | :18:16.
these problems? Hartlepool warmed up for the new season with a | :18:16. | :18:20.
midweek testimonial match for Ritchie Humphries. It is another | :18:20. | :18:26.
veteran who is exciting the fans. Nearly 6,000 have snapped up season | :18:26. | :18:32.
tickets at just 100. Nobby Solano signed in the summer, he has played | :18:32. | :18:36.
in the Premier League, Champions League, and captained his country | :18:36. | :18:43.
in World Cup qualifiers. I am very lucky, I did not get any injuries | :18:43. | :18:49.
during pre-season. I am fine. first team coach believes he has a | :18:49. | :18:55.
team that will surprise many. The former Newcastle winger will be a | :18:55. | :18:59.
major influence. He brings fantastic experience and technical | :18:59. | :19:03.
ability and has also been a big influence on our players. Anyone | :19:03. | :19:08.
who has been in the game and get the chance to play with someone | :19:08. | :19:13.
like him get a great opportunity. He is a very talented player. On | :19:13. | :19:23.
:19:23. | :19:25. | ||
many levels it is fantastic. All the action on your local BBC | :19:25. | :19:29.
radio station. Elsewhere, there has been a lot of new faces at the | :19:29. | :19:34.
Stadium of Light, so much so that Steve Bruce is now at women -- is | :19:34. | :19:41.
now trimming his squad, with Steed Malbranque leaving. George | :19:41. | :19:47.
McCartney is in talks with another club. There is two other boys who | :19:48. | :19:53.
need to go and play. We will see what develops. There is a long way | :19:53. | :20:03.
to go. Certainly, with some of them, we are listening to offers. Players | :20:03. | :20:07.
need to play and some of our players will be restricted. | :20:07. | :20:12.
cricket, Yorkshire drew their four- day game with Hampshire. Michael | :20:12. | :20:22.
Carberry was unbeaten on 300. Durham who take on Hampshire drew | :20:22. | :20:25.
their match with Nottinghamshire after Paul Collingwood signed a | :20:25. | :20:32.
three-year deal. That ends speculation about Paul | :20:32. | :20:37.
Collingwood's future. If the London Olympics had taken place just after | :20:37. | :20:41.
Beijing, then swimmer Jo Jackson would have been a shoo-in for a | :20:41. | :20:49.
wedding -- for a medal. But just as she was hitting the heights of her | :20:49. | :20:55.
career in 2009, she had problems with her health. She is however | :20:55. | :21:00.
determined to keep her dream alive. It was at the Beijing Olympics that | :21:00. | :21:07.
Jo Jackson burst onto the world stage. Her bronze medal was no | :21:07. | :21:14.
flash-in-the-pan. The year after, she won three freestyle medals. She | :21:14. | :21:23.
smashed that two world records. Brawn was the biggest meat with | :21:23. | :21:33.

medals I have done. -- Rome was the biggest meet. I came off so happy. | :21:33. | :21:38.
Back home, the family followed the success, and they supported the | :21:38. | :21:46.
swimmer when her future came under threat. About two years ago, the | :21:46. | :21:52.
asthma started to deteriorate. She had problems with her breathing she | :21:53. | :22:02.
could not shift will stop training was not possible. Her ribs kept | :22:02. | :22:09.
popping out. She could not train at all. It was frustrating because in | :22:09. | :22:19.
:22:19. | :22:19. | ||
her magic to the good -- in her mind she wanted to continue. | :22:19. | :22:24.
there a point where she thought about quitting? There was, and it | :22:24. | :22:32.
is her decision, but I am ready to support her again. The training is | :22:32. | :22:38.
so disheartening when she cannot get the results. She has had a lot | :22:38. | :22:45.
of bad times, but a lot of good as well. Us parents will celebrate | :22:45. | :22:53.
with her when she succeeds. past two years have been a struggle. | :22:53. | :23:02.
Now her career appeared so be on the mend. -- appears to be. 2012 is | :23:02. | :23:10.
firmly in her sights. All Olympics do not have done -- having Olympics | :23:10. | :23:14.
in Britain does not happen very often and knowing there will be | :23:14. | :23:20.
thousands of people watching us, it is really great. Hopefully I can go | :23:20. | :23:28.
to the trials and qualify. After next year, whatever happens, that | :23:28. | :23:33.
will be it. She will be 25 next year, coming to the end of her | :23:33. | :23:39.
swimming career. To finish at the Olympics in her home country would | :23:39. | :23:49.
put the icing on the cake, it would be a really nice end to her career. | :23:49. | :23:59.

Good luck. Once you are Marine -- or once a marine, always a Marine. | :24:02. | :24:06.
That is the motto of the Royal Marine Commandos. And a group of | :24:06. | :24:11.

are in for a rough weekend? I am afraid so. It is a beautiful | :25:49. | :25:53.
evening. I cannot tell you it will last into the weekend because if | :25:53. | :25:58.
you look at Headline, there are bake heavy showers, which will make | :25:58. | :26:08.
their presence well and truly felt. Look at the pressure, you can see | :26:08. | :26:14.
from Saturday the showers will push up from the south. On Sunday, just | :26:14. | :26:24.

sunshine. There will be a dry night tonight. A lot of cloud will be | :26:37. | :26:44.
coming in. You will see the ominous blue blobs by the end of the night. | :26:44. | :26:49.
