Tonight, five years on from the Grayrigg train crash, an inquest | :00:10. | :00:14.
finally opens into the death of this 84-year-old passenger. | :00:14. | :00:18.

Newcastle at the top and Sunderland Almost five years on from the | :01:00. | :01:04.
Grayrigg rail crash in Cumbria, an inquest has finally opened into the | :01:04. | :01:09.
death of an elderly who was a passenger on the train. The London | :01:09. | :01:16.
to Glasgow express with over 100 people on board derailed in remote | :01:16. | :01:21.
country side in February 2007. All nine carriageways careered off the | :01:21. | :01:27.
rails. Margaret Masson died and nearly 30 others, including the | :01:27. | :01:33.
driver, were injured. Alison, why has it taken nearly | :01:33. | :01:38.
five years for this inquest to be held? Well, as the inquest opened | :01:39. | :01:42.
this morning, the coroner apologised to Mrs Masson's family | :01:42. | :01:48.
for it taking so long for it to get here. He pointed out similarities | :01:48. | :01:52.
to the Grayrigg crash and the crash which happened in Potters Bar in | :01:52. | :01:56.
2002 which claimed seven lives. He said those inquests had to be | :01:56. | :01:59.
completed before this one could begin. The families of both sets of | :01:59. | :02:03.
victims had called for the inquests to be held together because of the | :02:03. | :02:07.
similarities. Both were caused by problems with track maintenance. | :02:07. | :02:10.
But the Government ruled that couldn't happen. Better scrutiny | :02:10. | :02:13.
would occur if they were held separately. | :02:13. | :02:18.
Stphr it has finally started. What evidence have we heard today? Today, | :02:18. | :02:23.
we've heard about what it was like to be on that train and why Mrs | :02:23. | :02:26.
Masson was on there in the first place. Her daughter, Margaret | :02:26. | :02:31.
Langley, described the family hadn't intended to travel north to | :02:31. | :02:35.
Scotland until the following day but decided to take that evening | :02:35. | :02:38.
train instead. Mrs Langley could remember nothing of the crash apart | :02:38. | :02:42.
from waking up in hospital the next day. We heard a statement from her | :02:42. | :02:46.
now late husband Richard, who died not as a result of the crash. He | :02:46. | :02:49.
said he remembered being caught upside down in that carriage seeing | :02:49. | :02:53.
his wife and mother-in-law lying together, calling out each other's | :02:54. | :02:57.
names. We know Mrs Masson died soon after. We also heard from the drain | :02:57. | :03:03.
driver, Iain Black. Who, despite being thrown from the driver's seed | :03:03. | :03:07.
seat into the nose cone of the train and losing consciousness at | :03:07. | :03:11.
times, he called ahead to ensure know others trains were sent down | :03:11. | :03:16.
the tracks and into that wreckage. That's day one. What do we expect | :03:16. | :03:20.
to hear tomorrow? Tomorrow, we'll hear further evidence from those | :03:20. | :03:24.
first on the scenes from the rail accident investigation board. We'll | :03:24. | :03:30.
here hear more about the problems about where the derailment happened. | :03:30. | :03:33.
The inquest's expected to last two weeks. | :03:33. | :03:37.
They've endured huge budget cuts and made scores of staff redundant. | :03:38. | :03:42.
Now, Durham Police are starting to recruit frontline officers again. | :03:42. | :03:47.
They are the first in the region to lift a recruitment freeze. It has | :03:47. | :03:51.
been made possible by savings in the back office. Elsewhere, it | :03:51. | :03:55.
looks bleak with tens of millions of pounds being slashed from police | :03:55. | :03:58.
budgets across the North East and Cumbria. | :03:58. | :04:02.
They are cuts the police described as savage. But now Durham says it | :04:02. | :04:06.
can finally start bringing in fresh frontline bobbies like these once | :04:06. | :04:10.
again. All those officers will be moving into the neighbourhood | :04:10. | :04:15.
policing teams. So, there will be 20 communities that will see an | :04:15. | :04:21.
extra officer walking their streets and making the community safer. | :04:21. | :04:25.
Like many others, Durham Police has had a recruitment freeze. Recent | :04:25. | :04:32.
times have certainly been chilling. A 20% budget cut over four years. | :04:32. | :04:37.
139 staff made redundant in a 12 month period. The Police Federation | :04:37. | :04:40.
says once Durham had 1700 police officers, the new target strength | :04:40. | :04:46.
is more than 300 less than that. But the federation agrees the end | :04:46. | :04:50.
of the recruitment freeze is clearly good news. 20 new officers | :04:50. | :04:55.
is better than none, it says. The Police Authority says restructuring | :04:55. | :04:59.
done, it's good housekeeping, like trimming the back office and | :04:59. | :05:04.
anticipating the cuts in advance which means it can now move forward | :05:04. | :05:07.
again. It wasn't a pleasant experience for us. We could see | :05:07. | :05:12.
what was going to occur. We took these decisions very early on. | :05:12. | :05:17.
We've had to restructure the force. There's been no view expressed to | :05:17. | :05:21.
me or anyone imsee aware of that any member of the public has seen a | :05:21. | :05:26.
change in the delivery of service. Durham says the first of its 20 new | :05:26. | :05:29.
bobbies, who've already been assessed, will areef before | :05:29. | :05:35.
Christmas. -- will arrive before Christmas. | :05:35. | :05:39.
Peter joins me now. What's happening with the rest of the | :05:39. | :05:42.
region's forces? Nothing's happening. That's reality problem. | :05:42. | :05:46.
They are not reciting police officers. If you don't recruit, | :05:46. | :05:50.
when people retire, you don't have people replacing them. Your numbers | :05:50. | :05:53.
will fall. This is all because of the police force's financial | :05:53. | :05:58.
situation. We can show you the figures now. You will' see the | :05:58. | :06:03.
extent of the cuts. Cleveland are losing 24 million over four years. | :06:03. | :06:07.
Northumbria, 17 million this financial year. Cumbria, 18 | :06:07. | :06:11.
million over four years. North Yorkshire are telling us they are | :06:11. | :06:16.
making 61 redundancies. They will be civilian staff. You cannot make | :06:16. | :06:20.
police officers redundant. It is complex but clearly lots of change | :06:20. | :06:24.
ahead for our police forces. Thank you. | :06:24. | :06:28.
The operator of a Tyneside scrap yard which was engulfed by fire | :06:28. | :06:32.
earlier this year could face prosecution. The blaze in the Byker | :06:32. | :06:35.
district of Newcastle was seen from miles around as firefighters | :06:35. | :06:39.
battled to bring it under control. There have been many other fires at | :06:39. | :06:46.
scrap yards froplts -- prompting fierce about health and | :06:46. | :06:50.
environmental risks. The fire broke out at the scrap | :06:50. | :06:55.
yard in Byker about 45 minutes ago. The smoke can be seen from several | :06:55. | :07:05.

May this year, and Tyne and wear fire service is tested to the limit | :07:06. | :07:13.
tack alg huge blaze in Byker. Dbg tackling a huge blaze in Byker. | :07:13. | :07:19.
It was black. God knows how these people suffered living here. It is | :07:19. | :07:26.
only 50 or 100 yards away. It was really bad. I had to put me card | :07:26. | :07:30.
began over me nose an mouth. The police were telling everyone to get | :07:30. | :07:37.
in their houses and shut doors and windows cos it was toxic. This is | :07:37. | :07:45.
one of the a number of scrap yard fires recently. You're looking at | :07:45. | :07:51.
carbon fibres from fuels and oils. There are polymers. Plastics. It is | :07:51. | :07:58.
difficult to say what is in the smoke plume from a scrap yard fire | :07:58. | :08:02.
but you can say with a fair degree of accuracy, none of it you should | :08:02. | :08:06.
be breathing. The Byker blaze started by accident. Clearing the | :08:06. | :08:10.
site operator of any blame. But that's not the end of the matter. | :08:10. | :08:13.
The Environment Agency completed its investigation. We can reveal | :08:13. | :08:19.
that court action could follow. The yard operator's been questioned | :08:19. | :08:22.
under caution about the amount and type of waste stored there. I | :08:22. | :08:25.
understand they've been ordered to change the way they operate the | :08:25. | :08:29.
site. Particularly the way waste is stored and handled. A decision on | :08:29. | :08:37.
charges is expected in December. You can see more on that story in | :08:37. | :08:47.

tonight's Inside Out on BBC One at 7.30pm. | :08:47. | :08:52.
Five months ago, the Prince of Wales visited Teesside and saw | :08:52. | :08:57.
first-hand the grim reality of the mothballing of the Redcar blast | :08:57. | :09:03.
furnace. Since then. Complex has been bought. Its new Thai owner, | :09:03. | :09:10.
SSI, has promised to create 1900 jobs. The Prince was back again | :09:10. | :09:15.
today. As you would expect, Prince of | :09:15. | :09:20.
Wales met the bosses of steel company SSI today. But at the end | :09:20. | :09:24.
of the line, a more human touch. The widow and son of the union | :09:24. | :09:27.
leader Geoff Waterfield. His lobbying, including that of the | :09:27. | :09:31.
Prince himself, is in part to thank for the return of steel to Teesside. | :09:31. | :09:36.
This is where it will be made. The very heart of the blast furnace. | :09:36. | :09:40.
Here to help make it, will be Graham Dunn. Last time we met him, | :09:40. | :09:44.
he'd lost his job. The blast furnace was mothballed and the | :09:44. | :09:52.
future was grim. You met the Prince. What did he say to you? He asked if | :09:52. | :09:57.
I'd worked here before. I said for 36 years. He asked if the wife was | :09:57. | :10:01.
happyed aide come back. He said very happy. I was happy to be back. | :10:01. | :10:07.
We were built on iron. Been making iron and steel since the mid-19th | :10:07. | :10:11.
century. Let's get it going again. How close are we to seeing steel | :10:11. | :10:17.
being made once more? The date is 8th December. We are working hard | :10:17. | :10:22.
towards that. We are in the process of reviewing everything and making | :10:22. | :10:27.
sure the suppliers are delivering on time. The Prince said he was | :10:27. | :10:31.
extremely impressed with what he saw in the blast furnace. With the | :10:31. | :10:35.
royal diversion now over, working start again on trying to get it | :10:35. | :10:44.
back online by December 8th. Still to come tonight: Monday's | :10:44. | :10:50.

After her acclaimed performance in the musical earlier this summer, | :14:56. | :15:03.
former Atomic Kitten singer Liz McClarnon returns as Pollet. She is | :15:03. | :15:06.
described as the ultimate tarred with a heart. She is so endearing. | :15:06. | :15:12.
When I saw her on the West End, a friend of mine said so that I | :15:12. | :15:19.
should play the part. I have had my heart set on it for a while. It is | :15:19. | :15:25.
bright, clever, it has everything. The cast are amazing. There are 29 | :15:25. | :15:30.
of them, nine in the orchestra and four dogs. They flog themselves to | :15:30. | :15:39.
death. My character is the only person in the show he has a | :15:39. | :15:43.

Well, Team Talk comes round once again. Top of the agenda this week, | :16:32. | :16:35.
Newcastle United, who aren't that far from being top of the Premier | :16:35. | :16:37.
League! Fantastic, isn't it? They probably | :16:37. | :16:40.
wont win it, but they closed the gap on Chelsea and Manchester | :16:40. | :16:45.
United, who both lost yesterday. The Magpies are now joint third, | :16:45. | :16:48.
and only a point behind Manchester United in second. Newcastle, | :16:48. | :16:51.
leaders Man City and Huddersfield are the only unbeaten teams in the | :16:51. | :16:55.
country. 48,000 watched them beat Wigan at | :16:55. | :17:00.
the weekend. They're hoping to push back over that 50,000 mark. | :17:00. | :17:03.
That's right - this afternoon they launched a new season ticket drive. | :17:03. | :17:07.
Hundreds of fans turned up to take advantage of the offer, and it has | :17:07. | :17:10.
giving them plenty to sing about. Current season ticket holders can | :17:10. | :17:13.
buy additional half price season tickets for the rest of the | :17:13. | :17:19.
campaign. Some of the players turned up to help out as well. The | :17:19. | :17:22.
offer means children can get to see matches for just over 2.50 - and | :17:22. | :17:30.
there's not much you can buy for that these days! | :17:30. | :17:34.
As we said, a win for Newcastle at the weekend, and for Sunderland. | :17:34. | :17:38.
Both clubs left it a bit late! Just nine minutes left when Johan | :17:39. | :17:45.
Cabaye broke the deadlock against lost any of the last 24 games he's | :17:45. | :17:48.
played for club or country. And he's been threatening his first | :17:48. | :17:52.
goal for the club for some time. But do you know why he ran to | :17:52. | :17:54.
celebrate with the club masseur, Micky Holland? It's because every | :17:54. | :17:57.
week Micky's been telling him he'd score a goal. This week, Cabaye | :17:57. | :18:01.
said, "Don't say it and I might score". And he did! One piece of | :18:01. | :18:05.
bad news for Newcastle, though - Shola Ameobi is out for up to six | :18:05. | :18:07.
weeks with a hamstring injury. Elsewhere, a crucial win for | :18:07. | :18:10.
Sunderland. They'd have slipped into the relegation zone if they'd | :18:10. | :18:13.
lost at Bolton. Still goalless, with eight minutes to go, Stephane | :18:13. | :18:16.
Sessegnon with his first goal of the season. You can see what it | :18:16. | :18:19.
meant to the manager! Yes, Aston Villa and Darren Bent at | :18:19. | :18:22.
the Stadium of Light next Saturday - you can imagine how the pressure | :18:22. | :18:25.
would have been cranked up if they hadn't won this one. But here's | :18:25. | :18:29.
another good stat - Niklas Bendtner has either scored or set up a goal | :18:29. | :18:30.
in every game he's played this season! | :18:30. | :18:34.
We're full of them this week, aren't we? If they hadn't picked up | :18:34. | :18:37.
only their second win of the campaign, do you think Steve Bruce | :18:37. | :18:47.
:18:47. | :18:48. | ||
I never said I wouldn't. I worry about the people around me, not me. | :18:48. | :18:53.
They get edgy and nervous. But thankfully, today is one of the | :18:53. | :18:58.
reasons why I came. Were 1,500 came down. There are not many clubs to a | :18:58. | :19:03.
fourth bottom of the league who can produce 4,500 people. We give them | :19:03. | :19:07.
something to shout about today. And just as pleasing as those goals | :19:07. | :19:10.
for both Newcastle and Sunderland, some important savesat the other | :19:10. | :19:11.
end? Some absolutely vital ones. | :19:11. | :19:19.
Again, late on in the Sunderland the Black Cats were trying to hold | :19:19. | :19:22.
on to a one-goal lead. In the 89th minute, Simon Mignolet, with his | :19:22. | :19:25.
feet blocking a shot from Darren Pratley. How important was that? | :19:25. | :19:30.
His first clean-sheet since the 4-0 win over Stoke last month. And for | :19:30. | :19:33.
that, he can also thank John O'Shea, captaining the side, with Lee | :19:33. | :19:34.
Cattermole dropped. Former Middlesbrough defender, David | :19:34. | :19:37.
Wheater, looked odds-on for an equaliser at the back post, but | :19:37. | :19:41.
O'Shea just got up there to knock the ball away. | :19:41. | :19:44.
And this is the reason why Newcastle could afford to let Steve | :19:44. | :19:47.
Harper join Brighton on loan for the next month. He's been kept out | :19:47. | :19:51.
of the team by Tim Krul, who pulled off this fabulous save from Victor | :19:51. | :19:53.
Moses. Couldn't quite believe it, could | :19:53. | :19:58.
he? Deflected off Steven Taylor. Great reactions from Krul. No | :19:58. | :20:08.

of his game. That is one he can put in his little DVD collection. | :20:20. | :20:23.
Into the Championship, and Middlesbrough are back up to second | :20:23. | :20:26.
place, after a long-overdue win at the Riverside - their first since | :20:26. | :20:30.
the middle of August. Yes, they'd drawn four in a row | :20:30. | :20:34.
since then. And Derby were level on points with them at the start of | :20:34. | :20:38.
play. Two goals either side of half-time won it for the Boro. The | :20:38. | :20:40.
first from Rhys Williams turning in Justin Hoyte's shot, and then | :20:40. | :20:44.
Marvin Emnes got back on the score sheet after a few lean weeks with a | :20:44. | :20:52.
fantastic header and his sixth goal of the season. | :20:52. | :20:56.
17,000 fans, but could still do with a few more. Nigel Clough's | :20:56. | :21:01.
Derby didn't make it easy, though. 15-year-old Mason Bennett hitting | :21:01. | :21:05.
the bar with this shot on his debut - the youngest player in the club's | :21:05. | :21:15.

Into League One, now. Last week, we were saying how Carlisle had hit | :21:18. | :21:21.
form while Hartlepool were on a slump. A complete turn around this | :21:21. | :21:24.
week - Carlisle thumped at Charlton, while Pools came from behind at | :21:24. | :21:28.

header, from Paul Murray, launching himself at the ball from the edge | :21:34. | :21:37.
of the box. The Poolie fans enjoyed it, cos you don't see many of | :21:37. | :21:39.
those! Or these! Although James Poole has | :21:39. | :21:42.
scored some beauties already this season. Andy Monkhouse had a go | :21:42. | :21:46.
from 40 yards - worth a try! And then Poole's second of the | :21:46. | :21:51.
afternoon wrapped it up. Hartlepool once again on the edge of the play- | :21:51. | :21:53.
off zone. And they're back above Carlisle, | :21:53. | :21:56.
who crashed 4-0 away at the League One leaders, Charlton - it wasn't | :21:56. | :22:00.
really their day! They gave goals away, had Matty Robson sent off, | :22:00. | :22:05.
and managed to miss a penalty as well! And to cap it all, this one | :22:05. | :22:15.

Everything that went wrong for us when from today, so hopefully we | :22:25. | :22:29.
will be fine after this. Let's change sports now. In rugby | :22:29. | :22:32.
union, Newcastle Falcons lost at London Irish in the second round of | :22:32. | :22:35.
pool games for the Anglo-Welsh Cup. Meanwhile, Cumbria staged a | :22:35. | :22:36.
prestigious Rugby League challenge match. | :22:36. | :22:39.
Yes, Whitehaven's Recreation Ground was the venue for Cumbria against | :22:39. | :22:41.

12 months ago, the England senior team were held 18 to 18 here. Most | :22:54. | :23:01.
for anticipating a decent contest. The fixture had come about when | :23:01. | :23:04.
Samoa's tour of the UK was cancelled. There are some who would | :23:04. | :23:07.
like to see a combined county side eventually bid for a Super League | :23:07. | :23:09.
franchise. But that debate's for another day. | :23:09. | :23:11.
Despite putting England under sustained pressure, Cumbria went | :23:11. | :23:17.
into the half-time break four advantage - a move started and | :23:17. | :23:20.
finished by Luke Gale. Captain Kyle Amor finally got Cumbria on the | :23:20. | :23:22.
scoresheet, with Workington's Darren Holt converting. After two | :23:22. | :23:24.
more tries from the Knights, England academy captain Brad | :23:24. | :23:27.
Singleton touched down for the home side. And, although England had the | :23:27. | :23:37.

two divisions above most of us. But we did ourselves proud. It is | :23:45. | :23:48.
bringing the Cumbrian League to Cumbria and we are given the chance | :23:48. | :23:52.
to play at that level. That is when we can see if we can get a Super | :23:52. | :24:02.

on how the seas are looking and our coastlines. The North Sea first - | :24:13. | :24:17.
this picture is full of promise and serenity at the start of the | :24:17. | :24:23.
weekend. The other face of it was seen today implies. You can see the | :24:23. | :24:29.
waves really picking up. The lifeboat is chasing an abandoned | :24:29. | :24:34.
jet-ski apparently! Luckily, nobody was hurt. The seas are really | :24:34. | :24:38.
picking up at the moment. Through the rest of the week, we will see | :24:38. | :24:44.
the breeze easing down. It will be a bit cooler. 16 or 17 Celsius | :24:44. | :24:48.
today and a bit wet at times in good autumnal fashion. The wet | :24:48. | :24:53.
weather starts tonight, coming up from the south-west. It is the | :24:53. | :24:56.
North East coast there will be most affected. It clears through the day | :24:56. | :25:00.
tomorrow. Wednesday - one a two showers particularly in the West. | :25:00. | :25:04.
On Thursday, things start to settle down, although rain will come up | :25:04. | :25:09.
from the south later on in the day. Or Friday, it does look like a good | :25:09. | :25:13.
end to the week. You see this ridge of high pressure coming up and you | :25:14. | :25:19.
can see Friday, it does not look bad. A bit of sunshine in the North | :25:19. | :25:23.
East. Closer to home tonight, we have this cloud in place already. | :25:23. | :25:29.
It is moving its way right the way across the region. You can escape | :25:29. | :25:32.
the rain through the night in Cumbria, and it will concentrate on | :25:33. | :25:36.
the North East flank. That rain just makes one or two inroads into | :25:36. | :25:40.
north-central areas. Mostly, it will be the coast and there could | :25:40. | :25:44.
be quite heavy by the end of the night. The cloud T -- keeps | :25:44. | :25:49.
temperatures of than double figures. Tamara, a miserable start to the | :25:49. | :25:54.
day in the North East. It could be wet. That will improve. You have | :25:54. | :25:57.
dry weather across Cumbria for most of the day and it will push its way | :25:58. | :26:02.
slowly northwards and Easter Sunday could end up with a bit of sunshine. | :26:02. | :26:05.
The best of that will be in the West. Cumbria will have the best of | :26:05. | :26:10.
the sunshine and temperatures. South-easterly breeze with a high | :26:10. | :26:15.
of 15 Celsius. Through the rest of the week, into Wednesday, it looks | :26:15. | :26:20.
a little unsettled and the West. Some showers in the West, but the | :26:20. | :26:24.
North East is largely unaffected. Temperatures slide towards the end | :26:24. | :26:29.
of the beak. Thurso, a bit more cloud, but the weather comes three | :26:29. | :26:34.
Thanks, Trai. Now a look at tonight's headlines. | :26:34. | :26:37.
David Cameron is facing a backbench revolt over whether a referendum | :26:37. | :26:40.
should be held on Britain staying in the European Union. | :26:40. | :26:44.
And the inquest has opened into the Grayrigg train crash in Cumbria - | :26:44. | :26:47.
which killed an elderly woman passenger. | :26:47. | :26:50.
Before we go tonight, news of a series of special reports this week | :26:50. | :26:53.
