Welcome to Look North. Tonight: Turbulence ahead. Fierce | :00:05. | :00:09.
for the future of Durham Tees Valley Airport as it's put up for | :00:09. | :00:13.
sale. Alcan emergency. A power cut halts | :00:13. | :00:17.
most production at the aluminium smelter. Workers are battling to | :00:17. | :00:20.
restart it. Winter hits the high ground. | :00:20. | :00:23.
Hundreds of home without electricity and schools closed too. | :00:23. | :00:27.
And what's this time of year really all about? Look North goes in | :00:27. | :00:30.
search of the true spirit of Christmas. | :00:30. | :00:36.
It is all about endurance tonight in sport. We the radio commentator | :00:37. | :00:42.
gearing up for his 1 thousth match and Sharon planning to take on the | :00:42. | :00:52.
:00:52. | :00:58. | ||
The future of Durham tease valley airport is in serious doubt after | :00:58. | :01:02.
its owners, Peel Airports, announced they were putting it up | :01:02. | :01:05.
for sale. The airport's seen a big fall in passengers. There are | :01:05. | :01:09.
concerns today's announcement could see it close. Our Political Editor | :01:09. | :01:16.
Richard Moss is at the airport now. You can see the problem here at | :01:16. | :01:19.
Durham Tees Valley Airport. I haven't seen hide nor hair of a | :01:19. | :01:24.
passier for a good hour now. There have been times today where there | :01:24. | :01:27.
have been more journalists than passengers here. You can put it | :01:27. | :01:34.
down to the economy struggling, airport taxs have gone up. Even you | :01:34. | :01:39.
pay a 6 fee for limited facilities here. But the company had a runs | :01:39. | :01:42.
this airport is not doing enough business and it's put it up for | :01:42. | :01:46.
sale. There were some passengers checking | :01:46. | :01:50.
in here today. But the simple fact is there's not enough of them. For | :01:50. | :01:54.
that reason, Peel Airports is puting it up for sale. We are at a | :01:54. | :02:00.
scale which doesn't feet part of the Peel Airports portfolio going | :02:00. | :02:04.
forward. We feel there will be a different owner who will have the | :02:04. | :02:08.
capability to turn this airport around and take it back to where it | :02:08. | :02:13.
should be. Crunching the statistics shows this is an airport suffering | :02:13. | :02:19.
more than most. Newcastle Airport has had a relatively gentle descent | :02:19. | :02:23.
in passenger numbers to around 4.3 million today. For Durham Tees | :02:23. | :02:28.
Valley, it has been more of a nose dive from 900,000 in 2006 to just | :02:28. | :02:33.
200,000 this year. But some do want to see this | :02:33. | :02:37.
airport survive and revive for the sake of the region's economy. | :02:37. | :02:40.
Ultimately, the question is what might replace it? We wouldn't want | :02:40. | :02:44.
to see it become an industrial estate or housing estate. Not just | :02:44. | :02:48.
because of the impact on the economy but impact on nearby | :02:48. | :02:51.
communities who have a live with the airport and wouldn't want to | :02:51. | :02:56.
see further housing, more traffic. Isn't this yet further evidence | :02:56. | :03:00.
that the loss of infrastructure and jobs in the North East, that this | :03:00. | :03:06.
Government's economic plan is a catastrophic failure? The key thing | :03:07. | :03:10.
about the future of Durham tease airport is not necessarily who owns | :03:10. | :03:16.
it but is it being invested in, expanded, is it working well? That | :03:16. | :03:21.
is the key question and the one I know the Transport Secretary easing | :03:21. | :03:28.
at N stkpwhrl is the prospect of finding a buyer realistic? We have | :03:28. | :03:30.
officially told the public we are selling today. Already we've been | :03:30. | :03:34.
talking to a few interested parties who have express add keen interest | :03:34. | :03:40.
to look at the options of acquiring this business. There is interest | :03:40. | :03:45.
out there. Some hope. But there's no doubt something needs to be done | :03:45. | :03:51.
here to pre vent decline becoming, if you forgive the pun, terminal! | :03:51. | :03:56.
What flights there are from Durham tease airport will continue while | :03:56. | :04:00.
they attempt to try to find a buyer. It is not the news the 100 staff | :04:00. | :04:04.
here wanted just before Christmas. The good news is they do find a | :04:04. | :04:08.
buyer they may invest in here, bring it back to somewhere where it | :04:08. | :04:11.
was before. It is a tough market out there at the moment. If there | :04:11. | :04:16.
isn't a buyer, the future for Durham Tees Valley Airport looks | :04:16. | :04:22.
pretty bleak. Part of the Alcan aluminium smelter | :04:22. | :04:25.
at Lynemouth in Northumberland has been put out of action after a mass | :04:25. | :04:30.
yir power cut. Electricity went off in part of the plant this morning. | :04:30. | :04:34.
It still has not been restored. It is the latest blow for workers at | :04:35. | :04:39.
the facty. The owners want to close the smelter next year with the loss | :04:39. | :04:46.
of 500 jobs. It has its own power station but | :04:46. | :04:51.
ironically power is what this place desperately needs tonight. Own e | :04:51. | :04:56.
Rio Tinto Alcan say parts of this place have been without electricity | :04:56. | :05:03.
today. Why has this had such a big impact? Power went off at the plant | :05:03. | :05:05.
just before midnight. Aluminium's produced in pots inside the factory. | :05:05. | :05:09.
Production needs to happen at very high temperatures. But when the | :05:09. | :05:15.
power was cut, part of the plant started to cool making aluminium | :05:15. | :05:21.
production impossible. It is a major operational problem. It needs | :05:21. | :05:26.
a continuous supply of electricity. When the electricity is loss it is | :05:26. | :05:31.
a major incident. We didn't suffer any injuries. No environmental | :05:31. | :05:35.
incidents as a result. Our priority now is to restore the site as soon | :05:35. | :05:37.
as possible. All of this is happening at | :05:37. | :05:40.
possibly the worst time. Last month, the factory owners announced they | :05:41. | :05:45.
wanted to close the smelter with the loss of 500 jobs. There have | :05:45. | :05:49.
been campaigns to find a buyer. Could the big power kout finish | :05:49. | :05:53.
this place off? It is too soon to consider the long-term impact. We | :05:53. | :06:00.
need to restore power as quickly as possible in the safest way. | :06:00. | :06:05.
Tonight, Alcan managers say part of the factory still has no power. The | :06:05. | :06:09.
other is running at reduced capacity. They are still | :06:09. | :06:14.
investigating the cause of the power cut. | :06:14. | :06:19.
It is not clear if last night's weather had anything to do with the | :06:19. | :06:23.
Alcan power cut. But the gales and snow left thousands of people | :06:23. | :06:28.
across Cumbria without power this morning. Cabe bls came town in and | :06:28. | :06:35.
around Alston. Mark Macal indone reports from the worst-hit area in | :06:35. | :06:40.
the north pin Ian's. In.$$TRANSMIT -- North Pennines. | :06:40. | :06:44.
Winner has well and truly arrived in the North Pennines. With it, | :06:44. | :06:48.
downed powerlines leaving homes and businesses without electricity. | :06:48. | :06:54.
can see the wires there, they are a small wire. With the frost and snow, | :06:54. | :06:58.
the build-up on the wire makes the wires really heavy. It stops the | :06:58. | :07:01.
wires. It has brought the wires down from right down the valley up | :07:01. | :07:06.
to the top. Once we get it isolated and get permission to start we can | :07:06. | :07:13.
knock all the ice off the wires. These men are working round the | :07:13. | :07:18.
clock to keep people connected. The linesmen have isolated a number of | :07:18. | :07:22.
faults in the region around Alston. They believe they can get the power | :07:22. | :07:26.
restored. The problem is, with the weather like this, it won't be long | :07:26. | :07:31.
before there are problems elsewhere. Later, I met had this local farmer | :07:31. | :07:35.
who had to dig sheep out of deep drifts and move them to lower lying | :07:35. | :07:41.
land. Electricity north-west has something like 2000 affected | :07:41. | :07:45.
customers N Alston today, people are delighted with linesmen's | :07:45. | :07:52.
efforts to keep power on. It's been off from 64.30 to 9.156789 both | :07:52. | :07:56.
schools were closed. There was no heating. Had had ta to make a | :07:56. | :08:03.
decision. A few phone calls around. The guys have worked hard to try to | :08:03. | :08:08.
get power restored? They got it on pretty qiblg. Within four or five | :08:08. | :08:13.
hours. The way the weather was, it was horrendous. The gritters and | :08:13. | :08:23.
snow plou ughs they do a tremendous jobs job. This afternoon, only some | :08:23. | :08:27.
houses around Alston and Garrigill were without power. But winter has | :08:27. | :08:37.
:08:37. | :08:42. | ||
Unemployment has risen again in the region. 148,000 people were without | :08:42. | :08:46.
a job in the North East in the three-month period from August to | :08:46. | :08:52.
October. That's a rise of 12,000 on the previous quarter. 11.7% of the | :08:52. | :08:57.
work yors is without a job. In Cumbria, just over 8,700 people | :08:57. | :09:01.
claimed jobseeker's allowance last month. Youth unemployment has risen. | :09:01. | :09:06.
Which has led to many 16 to 26- year-olds looking to start their | :09:06. | :09:11.
own business and escape the jobless ranks. | :09:11. | :09:15.
When jewels Quinn finished her degree she refused to countenance | :09:15. | :09:20.
unemployment. She started TeaShed from her home in Northumberland. | :09:20. | :09:25.
Her tea-selling business is just six months old but on course to | :09:25. | :09:29.
turn over8,000 in its first year. Her advice to those without a job, | :09:29. | :09:33.
follow her example. Definitely say give it a government you don't | :09:33. | :09:38.
really need a start -up investment if you have a good idea. Buy and | :09:38. | :09:44.
sell. Get a market stall. Sell online. You've eBay or Amazon and | :09:44. | :09:47.
places like that. It is not always that easy, of | :09:47. | :09:52.
course. But with another rise in youth unemployment today, it is | :09:52. | :09:57.
becoming an option. Self-employment figures have hit a record high. | :09:57. | :10:00.
More than four million people now work for themselves. There are | :10:00. | :10:05.
other ways of getting a foothold in the jobs market. Since leaving | :10:05. | :10:10.
school at 16 four years ago, Shaun has had just over one month of work. | :10:10. | :10:14.
That was temporary Christmas work in a greetings card shop. He is | :10:14. | :10:18.
though, doing something that should enhance his employ ability. | :10:18. | :10:22.
Volunteer work in a furniture exchange shop in Middlesbrough. | :10:22. | :10:31.
Since I worked last Christmas, I got a bit of experience. I'm saying | :10:31. | :10:34.
that should, cos most shops are looking for experience. That should | :10:34. | :10:38.
be taken into consideration. So, hopefully I have a bit of luck. | :10:38. | :10:43.
Every time I apply for a job in the shops. Even if Shaun doesn't find a | :10:43. | :10:47.
job soon, experience of volunteering will have been | :10:47. | :10:53.
invaluable. It gives him the ability to work in a team of other | :10:54. | :10:58.
workers in a similar situation. Volunteering has kept Shaun upbeat | :10:58. | :11:03.
when applications are rejected or not even acknowledged. It has shown | :11:03. | :11:07.
him what real work is like. I've tried my best to get one. That's | :11:07. | :11:16.
all I can do. Try my best. Sunderland could soon have a | :11:16. | :11:24.
record-breaking bridge. The Government is giving 8666 million | :11:24. | :11:29.
-- 86 million. It will be the tallest bridge in England and Wales | :11:29. | :11:32.
with the highest tower reaching more than 600 feet. If remaining | :11:32. | :11:36.
land deals are finalised, work should start towards the end of | :11:36. | :11:41.
necks year with the bridge completed in 20156789 another 5 56 | :11:41. | :11:47.
million has been allocated to a northern by Passat Morpeth in north | :11:47. | :11:51.
urm eh um ber land. And Bedale in North Yorkshire. | :11:51. | :11:57.
Peter Race has resigned after seven months in office. Mr Race announced | :11:57. | :12:02.
his departure due to a potential conthribgt of -- conflict of | :12:02. | :12:11.
interest. He is the second Chief Constable to resign this year. | :12:11. | :12:15.
The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation has funded a new 600,000 hi-tech | :12:15. | :12:19.
machine to be used for Cancer Research. The biomarker generator | :12:20. | :12:23.
is only the second of its type in the world. It is hoped it will help | :12:23. | :12:30.
with the diagnosis of treatment in cancer, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's | :12:30. | :12:33.
disease. A mother whose son is being kept | :12:33. | :12:38.
alive by regular blood transfusions is urging people to give blood. | :12:38. | :12:43.
Leon has a rare illness which means his body cannot make red blood | :12:43. | :12:48.
cells. He has to have transfusions every three woox. There has been a | :12:48. | :12:51.
fall in the number of people giving blood this year. | :12:51. | :12:58.
As a baby, Leon's parents were told he was unlikely to live jond his | :12:58. | :13:05.
13th birthday. He was only tiny at the time. To be told he had this | :13:05. | :13:09.
illness that they didn't have a name for it was so rare and his | :13:09. | :13:14.
life span was expected to be 12 or 13 years, it was horrendous. | :13:14. | :13:20.
Leon is now 23, a keen football fan, he's studying at the local college. | :13:20. | :13:23.
He needs blood transfusions every three weeks as his condition | :13:23. | :13:28.
deteriorates and he becomes lethargic. But he's living a full | :13:28. | :13:33.
life. I need people to give blood to keep me alive. If people don't | :13:33. | :13:42.
give blood, I would not be here today. I'm trying to get that | :13:42. | :13:50.
message across today to them. Keep me alive. The NHS says just 4% of | :13:50. | :13:55.
the eligible population are blood donors. Every Christmas, blood | :13:55. | :13:59.
stocks go down. Already 15tkhous fewer people have given blood this | :13:59. | :14:04.
year. A lot of people think blood in the blood bank is just there | :14:04. | :14:08.
constantly. We'll never run out of it and it's mainly for people | :14:08. | :14:13.
who've had an accident or surgical procedure. It isn't. For Leon and | :14:13. | :14:18.
other people with different illnesses, blood is their lifeline. | :14:18. | :14:22.
Leon literally is dependn't on their donation of their blood to | :14:22. | :14:29.
stay alive. Still to come: We go in seven of | :14:29. | :14:34.
the real spirit of Christmas. And, a seasonal warning from the rescue | :14:34. | :14:38.
teams who don't want to find you stuck on the Fells in conditions | :14:38. | :14:40.
like these. As December continues to dish up | :14:40. | :14:44.
that wintry mix, the frosty nights could cause us problems. A warning | :14:44. | :14:47.
tonight for ice I roads and pavements. I'll have a full | :14:47. | :14:56.
forecast shortly. Hundreds of cancer survivors | :14:56. | :14:59.
gathered at Newcastle Civic Centre today to pay tribute to a surgeon | :14:59. | :15:04.
and his team from the St's RVI Hospital. The oesophagus and | :15:05. | :15:11.
gastric unit is the biggest in Europe. Our region has among the | :15:11. | :15:16.
highest rates in the world of these types of disease. | :15:16. | :15:21.
We have to remember they have had the bravery, sprepbgt and | :15:22. | :15:25.
determination to get through that. It is a huge feeling of | :15:25. | :15:29.
satisfaction to see so many people so well and so grateful. Today is a | :15:29. | :15:34.
wonderful day for all of us. Everybody involved in our unit this | :15:34. | :15:39.
provides that help to these patients. I had stomach cancer. I | :15:39. | :15:44.
would not be here if it wasn't for him and his team. It is wonderful. | :15:44. | :15:48.
We're his surviving team. I've met grandchildren I wouldn't have met. | :15:48. | :15:53.
I have met great grandchildren I wouldn't have met. The day before | :15:53. | :16:01.
yesterday was my 15th birthday. I'm just a slip of a girl really, | :16:01. | :16:04.
aren't I? We've already seen winter's certainly arrived on the | :16:04. | :16:09.
high ground at least. Rescue teams in the Lake District are renewing | :16:09. | :16:12.
warnings to people planning on going walking over the holiday | :16:13. | :16:20.
season. If He may look like just another walker but this man is the | :16:20. | :16:25.
eyes and ears for thousands of people who take to the hills of the | :16:25. | :16:31.
Lake District in winter. Starting here in Glenridding. Going up... | :16:31. | :16:38.
Every day, wherever the weather., a fell top assessor heads for the top | :16:38. | :16:42.
of Helvellyn. We measure the wind speeds, wind chill and temperatures. | :16:42. | :16:49.
A wind sensor could do that but it can't look at the snow, feel it. | :16:49. | :16:56.
What is this snow like? Soft, powdery, solid? A human can do that | :16:56. | :17:02.
and put it on the website. It is down to minus 12 wind chill. | :17:02. | :17:06.
hours later, in severe winter conditions, John is at the summit, | :17:06. | :17:11.
just over 3,000 feet above sea level. When you gets up into these | :17:11. | :17:14.
beautiful snow-covered mountains, it is easy to see why so many | :17:14. | :17:18.
people are attracted to this scenery here to go for a walk at | :17:18. | :17:22.
this time of year. But Mountain Rescue in Cumbria say still too | :17:22. | :17:26.
many people are heading into the hills ill-equipped and then end up | :17:26. | :17:34.
needing their help. People go out with their sat navs from their cars, | :17:34. | :17:38.
holding it in their hands. People will print out from their sat navs. | :17:38. | :17:43.
They will not have a map. It is very easy to get to the top of the | :17:43. | :17:50.
a mountain. Once you get to the top in mist, there are 36 0 ways off. | :17:50. | :17:54.
John is now on the return leg from assessing conditions on the | :17:54. | :17:58.
mountain tops. Tomorrow, he'll head upwards again with the aim of | :17:58. | :18:03.
keeping people safe in this beautiful national park. | :18:03. | :18:08.
Ten days to gorbgs are you fed up with Christmas already? Or are you | :18:08. | :18:12.
really looking forward to the big day? For some, shopping and | :18:12. | :18:16.
presents are what it is all about. For others, the festive season | :18:16. | :18:20.
means something else altogether. We are are trying to look for the true | :18:21. | :18:24.
meaning of Christmas. Here's Peter Harris with the first | :18:24. | :18:34.
:18:34. | :18:42. | ||
This is what it's all about, the shopping, the crowds, the garish | :18:42. | :18:46.
lights. You can't beat the lights. This truly is the spirit of | :18:46. | :18:52.
Christmas. Or maybe not! You see, the trouble with Christmas is it | :18:52. | :18:56.
too often seems to be more trouble than it's worth. Family rows, | :18:56. | :19:00.
boozing, all the debt which we are still paying off when next | :19:00. | :19:05.
Christmas comes around. We on Look North will find the true spirit of | :19:05. | :19:10.
Christmas. I don't like Christmas. That's a | :19:10. | :19:16.
bad start. Getting drunk! That's worse. Good will really, bringing | :19:16. | :19:21.
society together. That's better. Generally family. That's the spirit | :19:21. | :19:26.
of Christmas for me. This lad has it right. You've probably seen the | :19:26. | :19:36.
:19:36. | :19:38. | ||
advert. Here's the punchline coming Not sure that would actually happen | :19:38. | :19:44.
in real life. But maybe it's the real Christmas spirit. He he just | :19:44. | :19:48.
twoopbts give to other people. Some spend their Christmas actually | :19:48. | :19:52.
doing just that. We have people who take foreign students away from | :19:52. | :19:57.
home, take them home at Christmas time. We have various Carol | :19:57. | :20:01.
services in which we ask people to bring little gifts for children who | :20:01. | :20:06.
are less fortunate. We have the scouts and scanned snaifian society. | :20:06. | :20:11.
Different people joining together. -- Scandinavian society. These | :20:11. | :20:16.
people are students in Newcastle. We've raised lots of money, gone | :20:16. | :20:23.
out and got shoeboxs and made up gifts for under-prif lijed children. | :20:23. | :20:27.
Its as been really good getting people involved, giving money and | :20:27. | :20:33.
gifts.. We've made a start. The real spirit of Christmas is out | :20:33. | :20:42.
there. And the lights and the shops can just fade away. | :20:42. | :20:46.
And in tomorrow's Look North, we'll meet more people who embody the | :20:46. | :20:51.
real spirit of Christmas. In sport, we're meeting a man who's | :20:51. | :20:55.
busier than Father Christmas. Nearly busier! It is the job many | :20:55. | :20:58.
football-mad youngsters dream of doing. Being a commentator. This | :20:58. | :21:03.
weekend, BBC Newcastle's Sunderland commentator nick barns will cover | :21:03. | :21:11.
his 1 thous th math -- 1,000th match..he began with Carlisle, | :21:11. | :21:18.
moved on to Newcastle before moving on to the Black Cats. | :21:18. | :21:28.
:21:28. | :21:30. | ||
COMMENTATOR: Larsson with his right foot. In The 99 9th match Nick's | :21:30. | :21:34.
comentaited for the BBC. COMMENTATOR: Larsson's surely won | :21:34. | :21:40.
it. He began with Carlisle United covering 335 matches with Newcastle | :21:40. | :21:43.
United there were over 250. Sunderland, almost 400. Then, | :21:43. | :21:48.
there's national radio as well. someone had said to me when I was a | :21:48. | :21:53.
young boy this is what you'll do one day, I'd have felt they were | :21:53. | :21:57.
living in fantasy world. It is more than just a one-day a | :21:57. | :22:01.
week job. Nick's known for his meticulous planning. His big book | :22:01. | :22:07.
of notes is looked on in awe by other journalists. You have to know | :22:07. | :22:11.
the teams, the players. You have to edit your interviews, do them. | :22:11. | :22:16.
Prepare a lot of stuff for sports bulletins, sports programmes. | :22:16. | :22:22.
covered more games than I've in. Nick is a professional. Very | :22:22. | :22:28.
knowledgeable. A gentleman. With Carlisle United I went to Wembley | :22:28. | :22:32.
twice. With Newcastle United champion league. With Sunderland, | :22:32. | :22:39.
it's been a rollercoaster, I conic manager, Roy Keane, Mick McCarthy, | :22:39. | :22:47.
Steve bruise and now Martin O'Neill. Nick's 1 ,000th match will be this | :22:47. | :22:51.
weekend. In I've always tried to be objective in the commentary. I've | :22:51. | :22:55.
never tried to dress it up. If Carlisle, Newcastle, Sunderland | :22:55. | :22:59.
have been playinging poorly, I don't see the point. There's not | :22:59. | :23:06.
point trying to predend a bad game is a good game if it's not. Tell it | :23:06. | :23:15.
as it is and you can't go far wrong. She's a world record runner. She's | :23:15. | :23:22.
completed 900 races covering 18,000 miles. But now ultra distransrunner | :23:22. | :23:29.
Sharon Gayter from Guisborough is atempting to break the men's | :23:29. | :23:37.
disstance on a treadmill. Counting down to an epic challenge. | :23:37. | :23:41.
Go on Sharon! Sharon Gayter is aiming to spend the next seven days | :23:41. | :23:46.
on this treadmill. The existing record is 468 miles. To beat it, | :23:46. | :23:52.
she'll have to run for 18 hours aa day. I've never run indoors. Never | :23:52. | :23:57.
been stationary. It is because everybody means at me. The races | :23:57. | :24:03.
are abroad. For once I'm stationary and everybody can command see me. | :24:03. | :24:07.
Now a lecturer at Teesside University, Sharon's completed over | :24:07. | :24:13.
300 marathons. In 2006, she ran from Land's End to John O'Groats in | :24:13. | :24:19.
12 days. That record still stands today. She's raising money for two | :24:19. | :24:28.
look charities, Zoe's Place and the Charlotte Wren Forget Me Not Fund. | :24:28. | :24:31.
Sharon's making history. She's a fantastic person. I will be running | :24:31. | :24:35.
into the sea for the Boxing Day dip on Boxing Day. That will be the | :24:35. | :24:39.
only running I'm doing. Unbelievable the amount of miles | :24:39. | :24:43.
and times she'll do. Can't believe it. Brilliant. This attempt may be | :24:43. | :24:47.
different but the Guisborough's determined to add another world | :24:47. | :24:53.
record to the list. It makes it worthwhile when the record goes. | :24:53. | :25:01.
The idea is to aim high. Sharon's marathon of marathons willfully end | :25:01. | :25:07.
that world record next Tuesday lunch time N Good job she's running | :25:07. | :25:10.
indoors than out with all the indoors than out with all the | :25:11. | :25:13.
wintry conditions. We saw proper wintry weather | :25:13. | :25:18.
earlier on in the programme. Over the next few days, it continues to | :25:18. | :25:21.
dish up a December mix. It will stay cold. Some snow showers at | :25:21. | :25:25.
times. There are frosty nights which will cause most of the | :25:25. | :25:30.
problems in the short-term. Today, we had a rash of showers. They put | :25:30. | :25:35.
down some fresh snow on the Cumbrian Fells. Largely dying away | :25:35. | :25:39.
this evening. As the skies clear and the winds ease, it is ice to | :25:39. | :25:43.
watch out for. Warning for icy roads and pavements anywhere which | :25:43. | :25:49.
hasn't been treating -- treated through the coming nights. | :25:50. | :25:53.
Temperatures dropping away. Even with patchy cloud, temperatures | :25:53. | :26:00.
could fall to sub-zero. Anywhere that had showers could ice | :26:00. | :26:05.
over. Cumbrian coast escapes a frost with | :26:05. | :26:10.
an on-shore wind. Anywhere else at risk from icy stretches. A cold | :26:10. | :26:14.
start tomorrow morning. A few mist and fog patches to wap watch out | :26:14. | :26:19.
for. It could take a good part of the morning to clear. Elsewhere, | :26:19. | :26:23.
decent sunny spells before cloud thickens up again. It could produce | :26:24. | :26:27.
more showers in western parts of Cumbria. Temperatures in the west a | :26:27. | :26:34.
shade up on today. More like 4 or 5 Celsius east of the Pennines. With | :26:34. | :26:38.
much lighter winds it won't feel as cold as it did today. Tomorrow | :26:38. | :26:43.
evening and overnight, we're keeping an eye on cloud, rain and | :26:43. | :26:48.
hill snow to the south of us. It could extend towards us. There's | :26:48. | :26:51.
some doubt about where the low pressure area goes. It looks like | :26:51. | :26:55.
it is clearing to the south of us. We might just see overnight sleet | :26:55. | :26:59.
and snow tomorrow night. After that, we pick up cold northerly winds. | :26:59. | :27:03.
For Friday and Saturday, temperatures struggle. There will | :27:03. | :27:10.
be some wintry showers around. Final yirbgs, a look at tonight's | :27:10. | :27:14.
main headlines: Unemployment rises to its highest level for 17 years. | :27:14. | :27:17.
With women and young people bearing the brunt of it. | :27:17. | :27:22.
The future of Durham Tees Valley Airport is in serious doubt tonight | :27:22. | :27:27.
after its owners announced they are putting it up for sale. | :27:27. | :27:30. |
