Welcome to Friday's Look North. In tonight's headlines...

:00:06.:00:09.

"I" of the storm. Controversy as councillors in North Yorkshire vote

:00:09.:00:13.

to give themselves iPads. Inside one of the largest cannabis

:00:13.:00:18.

farms ever found in the North. Faith in the future. This man has

:00:18.:00:23.

bought the home of the Bishops of Durham. Now he plans to make it a

:00:23.:00:28.

major tourist attraction. And there's only one St James's.

:00:28.:00:33.

But it is not in Newcastle. And the club that plays at this more modest

:00:33.:00:36.

ground is after the famous sign. Away from the name changing and

:00:36.:00:40.

name calling, we look ahead to the best of the weekend sports action.

:00:40.:00:44.

And we turn the clock back 20 years to the African tour which warmed

:00:44.:00:54.
:00:54.:00:55.

Durham up for their first cricket Here is a vote that has just come

:00:55.:01:01.

in. 37 in favour. 67,000 against. Councillors in Scarborough have

:01:01.:01:06.

voted tonight to give themselves iPads. That is despite a poll by

:01:06.:01:08.

the town's newspaper that showed overwhelming public opposition to

:01:08.:01:13.

the plan. Although the newspaper poll was not scientific, the

:01:13.:01:15.

response from the public was unlike anything the newspaper has seen

:01:15.:01:20.

before. Since their launch nearly two years

:01:21.:01:26.

ago, iPads have sold in their millions, becoming a must-have for

:01:26.:01:33.

many, with multiple functions. The year -- their usefulness has been

:01:33.:01:38.

noticed by Scarborough council. One councillor urged fellow councillors

:01:38.:01:42.

to support a plan to give themselves the gadget, paid for by

:01:42.:01:47.

the public purse. The council estimates this could save thousands

:01:47.:01:51.

per year, because paper could be sent electronically rather than

:01:51.:01:57.

printed and posted. But in these austere times, the proposal has

:01:57.:02:02.

proved controversial. Scarborough's local paper, the Evening News,

:02:02.:02:07.

carried out a survey with staggering results. 67,000 people

:02:07.:02:15.

responded, extraordinary for this town. Just 44 were in favour. It

:02:15.:02:21.

means that 99.9% of responses were against the idea. I should point

:02:21.:02:28.

out that this iPad is my own, what with private money. One of eight

:02:28.:02:33.

councillors to vote against his this woman, using her own computer

:02:33.:02:37.

Borough Council business. Other councillors have council laptops.

:02:37.:02:45.

She believes those are adequate. The iPad, in her opinion, is too

:02:45.:02:51.

far. Public money should not be used in this way. We either have

:02:51.:02:56.

our on computers or a laptop from the council. This is all over

:02:56.:03:03.

indulgent. If we want them, we can buy them. I think this is an

:03:03.:03:09.

excessive waste of money. There are other things this could be spent on.

:03:09.:03:12.

The councillors already have laptops and I think it is a step

:03:12.:03:18.

too far. We need the money for other things. It is a good idea,

:03:18.:03:23.

going with the times. Everyone else has them. In the same meeting,

:03:23.:03:30.

there were budget cuts of 2.2 million voted upon with no council

:03:30.:03:35.

tax rise. There were also calls for councillors to make a donation to

:03:35.:03:40.

their iPads. If the newspaper report is a good indication of

:03:40.:03:45.

feeling, that is likely to not be popular.

:03:45.:03:48.

The building was so dangerous, it took two days before police

:03:48.:03:52.

officers could safely enter. And when inside, detectives discovered

:03:52.:03:57.

one of the largest cannabis farms ever found in the North. More than

:03:57.:04:00.

a thousand plants valued at about 200,000 were discovered in the

:04:00.:04:04.

industrial unit at Haltwhistle in Northumberland.

:04:04.:04:09.

From the outside, it looked like a rundown industrial unit. Inside

:04:09.:04:12.

there was a sophisticated and professional cannabis farm. More

:04:12.:04:16.

than 1,150 plants on three levels. 750 had flowering heads, making

:04:16.:04:21.

them more valuable. Northumbria Police, who discovered the drugs

:04:21.:04:25.

after a tip off from a member of the public, estimate their value to

:04:25.:04:29.

be more than 200,000. But the building on the Hadrian Enterprise

:04:29.:04:33.

Park in Haltwhistle was unsafe. There was asbestos, bare live wires

:04:33.:04:41.

and running water. Sections of the roof and floors were dangerous.

:04:41.:04:45.

There were three levels in an industrial unit of cannabis plants.

:04:45.:04:50.

It was dangerous, we had to make the gas and electricity supply safe

:04:50.:04:55.

and the building was also unsafe to enter initially. It took dedicated

:04:55.:05:02.

search teams two days to look in the premises. Most of the equipment

:05:02.:05:04.

and plants have been destroyed, although some have been kept for

:05:04.:05:07.

forensic evidence and potential court proceedings. Detectives are

:05:07.:05:13.

confident arrests will be made soon. This is one of the largest cannabis

:05:13.:05:17.

farms officers working on this case have Abba found in the Northumbria

:05:17.:05:27.
:05:27.:05:30.

Police area Anne. -- ever found in the area.

:05:30.:05:32.

The redevelopment of Auckland Castle, historic home of the

:05:32.:05:37.

Bishops of Durham, will transform Bishop Auckland. That is the claim

:05:37.:05:39.

of the philanthropist who saved the castle's 17th-century Zurbaran

:05:39.:05:43.

paintings and the castle from being sold off. Now he wants to develop

:05:43.:05:46.

the site as a tourist attraction, bringing hundreds of thousands of

:05:46.:05:48.

visitors. Thanks to Jonathan Ruffer spending

:05:48.:05:51.

15 million, the famous paintings of Old Testament characters by the

:05:51.:05:55.

Spanish artist Zurbaran are staying in Auckland Castle. The cash-

:05:55.:06:00.

strapped church commissioners had wanted to sell them off. But the

:06:00.:06:03.

millionaire investment manager has also bought the castle, home of the

:06:03.:06:07.

Bishops of Durham for the last 900 years. It will become a tourist

:06:07.:06:10.

attraction telling the story of Christianity in Britain, as well as

:06:10.:06:18.

the history of the castle. Money and jobs could follow. And actually,

:06:18.:06:21.

what we want to have his apprenticeships, so that the work

:06:21.:06:27.

is done will be done by people learning how to do it. We would

:06:27.:06:33.

like to be involved in the Prince's Trust in that. And certainly,

:06:33.:06:39.

Bishop Auckland, if Auckland Castle becomes a major visitor attraction,

:06:39.:06:44.

which I eat in very much intend that it will, it will transform

:06:44.:06:49.

butchered Auckland. -- which I very much intend. Rowena Hackwood runs

:06:49.:06:52.

the trust overseeing the project and charged with raising funds. But

:06:52.:06:55.

how popular will a Christian-based attraction be in an ever more

:06:55.:07:02.

secular society? The real challenge is to think about how to make

:07:02.:07:07.

Auckland Castle a great day out, not just for people interested in

:07:07.:07:12.

architecture or work in the history at the castle has to tell, or the

:07:12.:07:16.

exhibitions it may have, we would certainly want to do things like

:07:16.:07:21.

walking with the dish -- working with the British Library to bring

:07:21.:07:26.

manuscripts together here. But the cost of realising those plans,

:07:26.:07:32.

opening up the castle and the park, will be expensive. It will cost

:07:32.:07:42.
:07:42.:07:47.

Health bosses in Hartlepool have been criticised for charging

:07:47.:07:49.

disabled war veterans to park at hospitals, but not disabled people

:07:49.:07:53.

on benefits. Derek Hall from Wingate suffers from several

:07:53.:07:58.

conditions after working as a surgeon during the first Gulf War.

:07:58.:08:00.

The changes were introduced at the University Hospital of Hartlepool

:08:00.:08:04.

at the start of the year as part of essential cost saving measures. But

:08:04.:08:07.

Derek says he is angry war veterans are being treated with such a lack

:08:07.:08:11.

of respect. I just feel that, in an age when the Prime Minister is

:08:11.:08:14.

currently making a lot of statements referencing the need to

:08:14.:08:19.

treat service veterans better with respect to health, education,

:08:19.:08:24.

housing and so on, that this was an evil way of treating service

:08:24.:08:28.

veterans. The North Tees and Hartlepool NHS

:08:28.:08:31.

Foundation Trust has now apologised to Mr Hall and promised to review

:08:31.:08:38.

its parking provision. Traders in West Cumbria are hoping

:08:38.:08:41.

to get their hands on up to 100,000 of government money to

:08:41.:08:45.

revive their high streets in the style recommended by Mary Portas.

:08:45.:08:49.

The shopping expert produced a report for the government. It said

:08:49.:08:52.

town centres need to be reinvented with cheaper parking, open-air

:08:52.:08:54.

markets and fewer regulations. Retailers in Maryport want to be

:08:54.:08:59.

one of the 12 towns to win the competition.

:08:59.:09:04.

Maryport in West Cumbria. With its maritime history and Roman Heritage,

:09:04.:09:07.

the town has plenty to offer tourists. But the high street has

:09:07.:09:13.

seen better days. We used to have various clothes shops, lots of

:09:13.:09:20.

bakers, individual because, newsagents, which we still half.

:09:20.:09:27.

Woolworths, all of being replaced by a charity shops. Or the shops

:09:27.:09:36.

are empty. One surviving specialist says it is more than just

:09:37.:09:43.

appearances. We needed back to when people had much to spend.

:09:43.:09:49.

upturned will not happen fast, so the town is bidding for money after

:09:49.:09:56.

a scheme suggested by Mary Portas to help revive high streets.

:09:56.:10:05.

will be fantastic to win this. We need it, and it would really work.

:10:05.:10:11.

The figures make it clear that something needs to be done. In

:10:11.:10:15.

Maryport, almost a third of all shops are empty, making it one of

:10:15.:10:17.

the worst-performing high streets in Cumbria. In the North East,

:10:17.:10:20.

Stockton is also faring badly, with over a quarter of its shops

:10:20.:10:23.

standing empty. And the picture is only slightly better in Sunderland

:10:24.:10:30.

and Gateshead. The loss of national chains has led to better times on

:10:30.:10:37.

the high street. -- bitter times. Only this week, four Peacocks

:10:38.:10:45.

stores in Cumbria closed down. So for small traders like Debbie,

:10:45.:10:49.

winning Mary Portas' support for Maryport Would be small consolation.

:10:49.:10:52.

And MPs will be discussing what can be done about our high streets on

:10:53.:10:55.

this weekend's Sunday Politics at noon on BBC One.

:10:55.:11:00.

She will not be walking down that famous red carpet. But a former

:11:00.:11:02.

nurse will be watching this weekend's Oscars ceremony closer

:11:02.:11:07.

than most. A film that she worked on is up for an Academy Award.

:11:08.:11:10.

Carol Grayson from Newcastle became a prominent campaigner for victims

:11:10.:11:13.

of infected blood transfusions after her husband and his brother

:11:13.:11:16.

both died. Her struggle was one of the reasons why she became

:11:16.:11:20.

executive film producer on the documentary Incident in New Baghdad.

:11:20.:11:26.

Nurse, HIV activist, and now producer of an Oscar-nominated film.

:11:26.:11:28.

Carol Grayson lost her husband Peter Longstaff and her step-

:11:29.:11:33.

brother Stephen to HIV. Both were haemophiliacs infected by HIV-

:11:34.:11:38.

contaminated blood transfusions. She says she saw similarities in

:11:38.:11:46.

her fight for justice and the film's anti-war sentiments. I lost

:11:46.:11:51.

my husband and my husband was, in a sense, collateral damage, because

:11:51.:11:56.

he lost his life because of Government incompetence. The film

:11:56.:12:06.
:12:06.:12:07.

is about collateral damage. I had a lot of empathy. She helped fund the

:12:07.:12:10.

film, about a US helicopter attack of Iraq civilians, with 3,000 she

:12:10.:12:13.

received from the government for Peter's death. I thought I might as

:12:13.:12:18.

well do something useful with some of this. And, in a sense, it gave

:12:18.:12:24.

me great satisfaction, because I was using Government money, so they

:12:24.:12:28.

were inadvertently finding a film that is actually very strongly

:12:28.:12:34.

anti-war. Carol will not be going to the Oscars. She says she cannot

:12:34.:12:37.

afford the trip. But she does believe her husband would be

:12:37.:12:42.

rooting for the film's success. would be delighted. I think he

:12:42.:12:47.

would be surprised. He would expect me to carry on campaigning, but it

:12:47.:12:53.

would put his limits and beliefs in what I might achieve to the test. I

:12:53.:13:03.
:13:03.:13:05.

think he would be very, very Now we all have different ways of

:13:05.:13:11.

saying thank you. Some say it with flowers or chocolates. But one

:13:12.:13:14.

Tyneside dad is going to extreme lengths to express his gratitude to

:13:15.:13:18.

all the nurses and doctors who have been looking after his daughter in

:13:18.:13:21.

hospital. Dave Gullane from North Shields is about to tramp 379 miles

:13:22.:13:25.

across a frozen Siberian lake. And he will be raising thousands of

:13:25.:13:27.

pounds for the Children's Foundation Great North Children's

:13:27.:13:30.

Hospital along the way. Jim Knight has been to meet him and his

:13:30.:13:37.

daughter Emily. A rare break from training for Dave

:13:37.:13:41.

and a chance to catch up with some quality time with Emily. Emily was

:13:41.:13:45.

born with an extremely rare condition called cloacal anomaly.

:13:45.:13:48.

It has meant, just in the first six years of her life, she has already

:13:49.:13:55.

had to endure all manner of hospital operations and procedures.

:13:55.:14:00.

We owe and insurmountable a mite of banks to the hospital. Myself and

:14:00.:14:06.

my family will always be in debt to them. Dave is a man of action. Not

:14:06.:14:10.

one to shirk a challenge. A Lance Corporal in the Territorial Army,

:14:11.:14:14.

he has already served two tours in Afghanistan. To all the staff who

:14:14.:14:18.

have helped Emily, he knew he wanted to make a grand gesture of

:14:18.:14:21.

thanks. And through a fundraising website, he would raise some money

:14:21.:14:25.

for the Foundation and the children's hospital in the process.

:14:25.:14:29.

So most days, this is where you will find Dave. Building up his

:14:29.:14:33.

stamina, ready for that fearsome Siberian marathon next month. It is

:14:33.:14:38.

pretty bracing on the beach here, but nothing compared to the

:14:39.:14:43.

temperatures he will ensure on that Siberian Lake. Temperatures of

:14:43.:14:49.

minus 40 at night and winds of up to 100 miles per hour. So this is a

:14:49.:14:58.

piece of cake. Do you think your father can run 379 miles? Yes.

:14:58.:15:02.

Hopefully I will get through it with the determination that Emily

:15:02.:15:09.

has shown. I can take that away and come out smiling. Do you think it

:15:09.:15:19.
:15:19.:15:26.

will be an adventure? Yes. Would When work men Crowbarred the St

:15:26.:15:28.

James' Park sign off the wall outside Newcastle United's ground,

:15:28.:15:31.

it caused outrage among the fans. But another football club in the

:15:31.:15:35.

region saw it as an opportunity, both to save the iconic sign and to

:15:35.:15:38.

give their own ground which shares the name an update.

:15:38.:15:42.

So Alnwick Town put in a cheeky bid for it, United said no, but the

:15:42.:15:52.
:15:52.:15:55.

tale has a happy ending. And the North East, if you want to watch

:15:55.:15:58.

football at St James' Park, there is one place to go off.

:15:58.:16:01.

The Northern League club has a long and proud history dating back to

:16:01.:16:04.

1879, long before Newcastle United. It has spent thousands upgrading

:16:04.:16:07.

its ground and when its chairman saw this happening, he saw it as a

:16:07.:16:15.

chance to upgrade it a little bit more. I thought, I have just the

:16:15.:16:20.

place where I could put that sign, outside hour ground. We will give

:16:20.:16:26.

it a good home. Wind it rather than a line in the storage room or a

:16:26.:16:32.

scrap heap, which would have been a shame, we would put it there.

:16:32.:16:36.

But the Newcastle turned down the request, saying while it was a nice

:16:36.:16:44.

idea, it planned to keep the sign in storage. I can understand. It

:16:44.:16:48.

was such a controversial move, that I did not want to come across as a

:16:48.:16:52.

pest. But after hearing the story on BBC

:16:52.:16:55.

Newcastle, a couple of local lads offered to make one for them and

:16:55.:17:03.

this afternoon just 24 hours later it arrived. A it is absolutely

:17:03.:17:06.

great. Fantastic. Would a big cash sponsorship deal

:17:06.:17:14.

ever persuade him to change the name of Alnwich St James' Park?

:17:14.:17:18.

would not dream of it. Maybe my cash layers wishing he had not

:17:19.:17:28.

Over at what used to be called St James' Park, Newcastle play their

:17:28.:17:31.

last Saturday afternoon game for about six weeks, so make the most

:17:31.:17:34.

of it! In fact, it is the North East

:17:34.:17:37.

against the West Midlands this weekend, as Sunderland go to West

:17:37.:17:40.

Bromwich Albion, while the Magpies are at home to Wolves.

:17:40.:17:43.

Alan Pardew has already said he hopes the row over the renaming of

:17:43.:17:46.

the ground does not distract from the job in hand, which is pushing

:17:46.:17:50.

for a European place. Last time out, the Magpies were

:17:50.:17:54.

hammered 5-0 by Tottenham. But they have been strong in front of their

:17:54.:17:58.

own fans and both Chelsea and Arsenal have hit a bit of a wobble.

:17:58.:18:01.

A Champions League spot is not beyond them.

:18:01.:18:05.

You will not catch the manager saying that, but you will hear it

:18:05.:18:12.

from someone who has been there and done it. It would be a disaster if

:18:12.:18:20.

they did not do it now. They have just got to keep the concentration.

:18:20.:18:22.

By sold well as against West Brom and they were absolutely terrible.

:18:22.:18:31.

There cannot be better time to be playing them. It is not the finish

:18:31.:18:39.

of the season. We have still got games that we have to win. Okay, we

:18:39.:18:43.

had a bad game against Tottenham, but I am determined to prove that

:18:43.:18:48.

we will not get worse. Wolves assistant boss Terry Connor

:18:48.:18:51.

is in charge for the rest of the season, following the sacking of

:18:51.:18:52.

former Sunderland manager Mick McCarthy.

:18:52.:18:55.

The Black Cats' current chief Martin O'Neill has expressed his

:18:55.:18:57.

dismay at the departure of Niall Quinn. The former chairman, who

:18:57.:19:01.

left the club earlier this week, had played a major role in luring

:19:01.:19:08.

O'Neill to the Stadium of Light. am very disappointed that he has

:19:08.:19:12.

decided to go at this stage. From my own point of view, I still

:19:12.:19:17.

thought he had a lot of work to do here. But people should not forget

:19:17.:19:27.
:19:27.:19:29.

what he did for this club. I am hoping that when he gets the time

:19:29.:19:33.

he will come back here and he is or be so held in great esteem by

:19:33.:19:38.

people here, including myself. Now here is a little challenge for

:19:38.:19:42.

you. The first four celebrities may be tricky if you are under 30, but

:19:42.:19:44.

older viewers will fondly remember Hank the lead guitarist, Lee the

:19:44.:19:48.

hard man actor, boxing great Hagler and soul legend Gaye. Then there is

:19:48.:19:50.

Dutchman Emnes, the Middlesbrough footballer. What have they all got

:19:50.:19:52.

in common? They're all called "Marvellous Marvin"! Mark Tulip

:19:52.:20:02.
:20:02.:20:11.

He really was "Marvellous" Marvin Emnes in the early weeks of the

:20:11.:20:14.

season. Eight league and cup goals by mid-September.

:20:14.:20:18.

They dried up a bit after that, but three goals in the last two matches

:20:18.:20:21.

have suggested a storming finish to the season for the Flying Dutchman,

:20:21.:20:31.
:20:31.:20:34.

who eventually put Millwall to the but I thought we would get other

:20:34.:20:44.
:20:44.:20:50.

chances, as we were playing so well. It was a good feeling. I was going

:20:50.:20:55.

to say he is very much a confidence player, but all footballers are

:20:55.:21:01.

confidence players. But I think he is very much in that moored at the

:21:01.:21:04.

moment. With promotion rivals Reading at

:21:04.:21:06.

the Riverside tomorrow, a repeat showing from Emnes would be welcome

:21:06.:21:16.
:21:16.:21:17.

both on Teesside - and back home in People are always asking me how I'm

getting on in English football in telling me to keep going. But we

:21:23.:21:30.

just need to keep winning here. Hopefully, we can make it into the

Premier League. Elsewhere tomorrow, Carlisle could

:21:34.:21:38.

climb back into a League One play- off spot if they beat Yeovil at

:21:38.:21:42.

Brunton Park. And Hartlepool could also move up

:21:42.:21:44.

the table. They are away at the bottom club Wycombe.

:21:44.:21:47.

Outside the League, we have got plenty of interest in the FA Trophy.

Two of our teams are in tomorrow's quarterfinals.

:22:03.:22:07.

But it was actually 20 years ago this month, that they went on their

first foreign tour. For the whole of February 1992, the

first-class cricket, Durham jetted off to Zimbabwe. Four weeks of

almost non-stop action - on and off the field. It was the excitement

everybody had. We were very keen to get Durham off to a good start. The

general amnesty and there was created on the tour, between the

players and the supporters, gave us a real feel of excitement about

:23:08.:23:14.

what was in store for everybody. It was a strange cocktail of talent.

:23:14.:23:17.

Young lads, fresh out of the local leagues, rubbing shoulders with

Test players, like Paul Parker and Wayne Larkins. That was one of the

:23:24.:23:31.

big hurdles they came across. Once things got on, we lost these two

:23:31.:23:38.

guys, and we had to replace them. But the likes of Ian Botham came in.

:23:39.:23:47.

But it became a whole new adventure for them and it was a tough thing,

:23:47.:23:54.

and I think that's why Durham help to get through that transition

:23:54.:23:57.

period so well. And with the help of Geoff Cook,

:23:57.:24:01.

one of the survivors from the tour of '92, Durham are now a major

:24:01.:24:03.

force in English cricket, with a international stadium to match.

:24:03.:24:13.

Could anyone have expected that? Certainly not. It was incredible

vision and incredible ambition. To Katie Durham team and then to

:25:39.:25:43.

and some bright spells. This evening and through the night, it

will stay dry, with the odd bit of patchy cloud. There is a brisk

north to north-westerly breeze and that is keeping it temperatures

and as I said, and nice day for many of us tomorrow, with the odd

between 7 and 10 degrees Celsius. The further east you are, the
