Welcome to Monday's Look North. In tonight's headlines - saved from

:00:02.:00:05.

the sand - a warning from rescuers, after a two-hour operation to help

:00:05.:00:14.

a man, trapped after digging on the beach.

:00:14.:00:19.

He was very frightened but he remained calm throughout. We had 45

:00:19.:00:21.

people here digging away. Campaigners battling to save

investor. We'll have the latest. And how a company in Dover could

:00:28.:00:31.

throw a lifeline to this once- famous floating nightclub.

:00:31.:00:35.

Turned out nice today. Some extra sunshine for this couple - with a

The emergency services have today issued a new warning about the

:01:17.:01:23.

dangers of digging on beaches after a man became trapped in a sand dune

:01:23.:01:29.

on a Northumberland beach. It happened on Druridge Bay. 40

:01:29.:01:33.

rescuers spent two hours digging him out. He was buried up to his

:01:33.:01:40.

neck and at one point, he had to be given oxygen.

:01:40.:01:47.

On such a beautiful evening, it is hard to believe that this was the

:01:47.:01:54.

scene of such frantic activity at about this time last night. This is

:01:54.:01:58.

where the tragedy started to unfold. It seems incredible when you hear

:01:58.:02:02.

about how many people were involved and how long they talk to get him

:02:02.:02:08.

out, that he wasn't more seriously injured. In a split-second, the

:02:08.:02:12.

fund in the sunshine turned to a desperate battle to save a man's

:02:12.:02:16.

life. The tons of sand which collapsed on to him had pinned him

:02:16.:02:22.

up to his neck. Rescuers say only his head was visible and the

:02:22.:02:25.

enormous weight of sound packed around his body meant he could

:02:25.:02:29.

hardly breathe. Paramedics had to give him oxygen throughout his

:02:29.:02:35.

ordeal. For the first few seconds, they probably laughed and then

:02:36.:02:40.

realised they were stuck and in a dangerous situation. Fortunately,

:02:40.:02:44.

they called 999 early and we were able to get here soon after they

:02:44.:02:50.

called. The growing army of rescuers frantically dug at this

:02:50.:02:55.

sand around him but as fast as they kept digging it out, more kept

:02:55.:03:05.
:03:05.:03:05.

tonnes before we could get to the sand around him. Two people have

:03:05.:03:12.

been digging a hole, we don't know why. It is a constant worry for us

:03:12.:03:20.

because the nature of sand is it is unstable. If we York, if I did a

:03:21.:03:24.

little hole here, see how that sound runs down. It will keep on

:03:24.:03:31.

running. Eventually, they managed to haul him free and the ambulance

:03:31.:03:36.

took him to hospital where he was found to be none the worse for his

:03:36.:03:40.

ordeal. Craig Curran wasn't so lucky. He died on a beach in Wales

:03:40.:03:44.

five years ago when the sand tunnel he did with his family collapsed on

:03:44.:03:52.

top of him. Some have made light of what has happened here but it

:03:52.:04:00.

really was a potentially a very John Whitehall. It wasn't a joke,

:04:00.:04:05.

was it? It certainly wasn't a joke. It could have been a lot worse than

:04:06.:04:11.

it was if it hadn't have been for the dedication and professionalism.

:04:11.:04:21.
:04:21.:04:21.

up to his neck and his lips had gone blue, yes? He was in a

:04:21.:04:25.

crouched position and the sound was up to his armpits, his shoulders.

:04:25.:04:30.

The paramedics were concerned about his breathing and he was starting

:04:30.:04:37.

to turn blue. They were very concerned and it got oxygen to him.

:04:37.:04:43.

It was potentially very dangerous. I can imagine it being quite

:04:43.:04:51.

frantic. It wasn't, it was very professionally done. Everybody

:04:51.:04:57.

worked very well together. The fire brigade, the Coast Guard, the

:04:57.:05:03.

ambience, the police. There wasn't any panic at all. -- the ambulance.

:05:03.:05:09.

Everybody did what they were asked to do. You can see the guy was

physically frightened that he Five people from Northumberland

:05:38.:05:42.

:05:42.:05:47.

Further arrests were made in North Seaton and Newbiggin where never

:05:47.:05:55.

firearm and ammunition were found. The court case against Sunderland

appeared before Newcastle magistrates two weeks ago but was

in court today. His case has been adjourned until 16th April.

:06:11.:06:16.

It is that what would you do moment. When someone wins the lottery and

:06:16.:06:21.

you think, wouldn't it be nice? That is what happened to a retired

couple from South Shields. -- Railston and file at Watkins are

:06:29.:06:34.

celebrating a windfall of 1.2 million. -- Violet.

:06:34.:06:38.

It is the traditional way to celebrate success. The champagne

lifestyle we would all love but few can contemplate. Railston and

:06:43.:06:49.

Violet Watkins can now if they want. They won 1.2 million on the

:06:49.:06:57.

lottery last Wednesday. You are stunned and you check and check.

bought was a new lawn mower as their old one broke the day of the

winner. What is it like to be rich? It hasn't sunk in. It is a relief

that you are not going to be wanting for anything for the rest

of your life. I can afford things now. I can play guitar now. I have

sport in Team Talk. A Yorkshire's heritage will be celebrated in a

new tourist attraction. And after a day of blue sky and unbroken

sunshine across the region, join me for the forecast to find out if it

:10:41.:10:42.

How many of you remember dancing the night away on board this? The

:10:42.:10:47.

tuxedo Royale and the Tuxedo Princess were iconic on Tyneside

:10:47.:10:55.

and Teesside in the 19 eighties and nineties. Now only the tuxedo real

-- Tuxedo Royale remains. Now they want to repair the ship.

:11:01.:11:06.

For many, she is synonymous with Pewsey weekends on Teesside and

:11:06.:11:13.

Tyneside but they -- this one's entertainment palace stands listing,

save this icon stranded at the Port of Tees. We hope to make

:11:44.:11:51.

the disco lights, she is no ordinary vessel. She is their last

:11:51.:12:00.

surviving steam car ferry. She is important to Dover as the Bronze

:12:00.:12:06.

Age boat. The Tuxedo Princess was towed away a few years ago but the

TSS Dover, stands helpless and partly sunken in Middlesbrough,

:12:10.:12:20.
:12:20.:12:20.

with no apparent owner. We wish to base the restoration around an

:12:20.:12:28.

apprenticeship and regeneration vessel, the hall and the heavy

:12:28.:12:31.

machinery up on Teesside and when a certain amount has been achieved,

:12:31.:12:39.

we want to bring it to Dover to carry out the lighter tasks. A will

:12:39.:12:43.

cost 15 million to restore her and once seaworthy, she will return

:12:43.:12:50.

back to water as a pleasure vessel. A stage production isn't normally

:12:50.:12:52.

considered a success if the cast and crew were outnumbered the

:12:52.:12:57.

audience. That rule of thumb won't apply to York this year as 1500

:12:57.:13:07.
:13:07.:13:20.

people are involved in a production This here, it is going to be rather

:13:20.:13:30.
:13:30.:13:37.

Walked down the street and you will almost certainly bump into someone

:13:37.:13:42.

who has gone a bit biblical. Do know why is a great part, he

:13:42.:13:46.

gets to save humanity from the flood.

:13:46.:13:51.

The cast list is approaching 600, however, Mary must be a bigger

:13:51.:13:54.

role? A bit like to think so.

:13:54.:13:58.

But she is old. There are I am the mother of God.

:13:58.:14:06.

Sometimes Mary does not get much of a mention.

:14:06.:14:16.
:14:16.:14:20.

I don't think anyone of us have really massive, Hamlet parks. G de

:14:25.:14:26.

Gabriel, we will be working together.

:14:26.:14:36.
:14:36.:14:38.

Time for Team Talk now, and we have a pretty good weekend of football

:14:38.:14:43.

in a moment, but first the team so far, their kings of British

:14:43.:14:48.

basketball, at the Newcastle Eagles. Their second Cup win of the season,

:14:48.:14:54.

this time the BBL Trophy. They did it the hard way. Nine points down

:14:54.:15:01.

against the Plymouth Raiders. They won at the return by 96-80,, the

:15:01.:15:08.

Eagles on course for a clean sweep of major honours.

:15:08.:15:14.

A real thrill, winning on your home court in front of your home fans,

:15:14.:15:20.

or becoming a deficit of nine points. It was stacked against us a

:15:20.:15:26.

little bit. We got it back. Redemption, however many years it

:15:26.:15:33.

took, redemption. We put ourselves in a good position to win all four,

:15:33.:15:38.

but we have to take it that at a time -- won at a time.

:15:38.:15:45.

Next stop is the lead. A ensure they will win, as well.

:15:45.:15:48.

Newcastle is focusing on the Europa League, possibly the Champions

:15:48.:15:52.

League, mainly due to the French Connection. We're not talking about

:15:52.:15:59.

these guys. They were watching yesterday's stunning 3-1 win. The

:15:59.:16:03.

Magpies are only just behind the Chelsea on goal difference. And one

:16:03.:16:09.

French guy doing particularly well at the moment is he dumb Ben Arfa.

:16:09.:16:15.

If that is clear you were looking for is this man. -- one man is Ben

:16:15.:16:21.

Arfa. He set up the first goal, scored

:16:21.:16:26.

the second and laid on this one. He scored five goals in six games

:16:26.:16:36.
:16:36.:16:37.

and almost had a hat-trick, except Ben Foster managed to keep him out.

:16:37.:16:42.

There was a bit of a defensive mix- up between Mike will come since and

:16:42.:16:46.

10 Croxall. Ben Arfa and nearly got a fourth

:16:46.:16:52.

near the end. Even the manager is making the French Connection.

:16:52.:16:59.

We showed some real champagne stuff, they were a real handful today. I

:17:00.:17:09.

was pleased the way we saw the game out, because this year it was 3-0.

:17:09.:17:18.

We have been a phenomenal all here. The players have worked so hard.

:17:18.:17:22.

When was the last time both Newcastle and Sunderland finished

:17:22.:17:25.

in the top 10? They must have been some time back

:17:25.:17:33.

in the 1950s. 1955, even before I was born.

:17:33.:17:36.

Newcastle are back up there, Sunderland are moving back up with

:17:36.:17:40.

a great win over QPR. James Maclean, the star of the

:17:40.:17:45.

shoal signed a new contract this week, as well. He set up the first

:17:46.:17:54.

goal, scored the second and had a part to play in the third, as well.

:17:54.:18:00.

That goal was enjoyed by this young lady, who is apparently Morley, his

:18:00.:18:09.

number young fan. -- Molly. Not quite so bright was this two-

:18:09.:18:15.

footed challenge on Fraser Campbell. He threw a bit of a hissy fit.

:18:15.:18:25.
:18:25.:18:27.

And what about this, from Bobby some honour? -- Zamore.

:18:27.:18:33.

And the final, the captain Joey Barton lost his place. Sunderland

:18:33.:18:38.

and James McLean have the last laugh. Up it has been a great week,

:18:38.:18:44.

not had too many of them, to be honest, to be awarded a new

:18:44.:18:47.

contract. This win today takes two to 40

:18:47.:18:52.

points. If I had said that to you in December what would you have

:18:53.:18:55.

said? Are I would have taken it, every

:18:55.:19:00.

single day of the week. 40 points looked a long way off in December

:19:00.:19:04.

for us. In the championship, and draw with

:19:04.:19:07.

Bristol City means Middlesbrough have won just two of their last

:19:07.:19:10.

seven games but they are still in the promotion list.

:19:10.:19:15.

That is because everyone else is dropping points, as well. They

:19:15.:19:20.

dropped a goal to Hogan Ephraim. A fabulous equaliser from Malaury

:19:20.:19:25.

Martin. He came on as a half-time substitute and has scored all three

:19:25.:19:30.

of his Middlesbrough goals. We keeper Scott Flinders had some do

:19:30.:19:39.

terrific saves to keep out Yeovil Town. They have gone -- they had

:19:39.:19:43.

gone 475 minutes without a goal against them, just short of eight

:19:43.:19:51.

hours, but Ryan Noble be scored. Also it looks like a fight between

:19:51.:19:55.

Notts County, Stevenage and Carlisle, who drew at Colchester

:19:55.:20:02.

thanks to a goal from James Berrett. Carlisle and Sunderland can still

:20:02.:20:10.

follow them to Wembley this season. One the same weekend in the FA, we

:20:10.:20:16.

could have done all Northern League clash. At Herne Bay and kept -- at

:20:16.:20:26.
:20:26.:20:27.

her MBE in Kent Stevenage have moved up. Dunstan will also fancy

:20:27.:20:31.

their chances of reaching Wembley, probably not one of their best

:20:31.:20:38.

displays, but a late strike in a 1- 0 against Stavely could prove

:20:38.:20:44.

crucial in the next leg. A reminder that late kick-off is

:20:44.:20:48.

back tonight after one week off, and the boys are looking at all

:20:48.:20:52.

things medical in the wake of a heart attack that nearly claimed

:20:52.:20:58.

the life of Bolton's Fabrice Muamba. They'll be talking to the father of

:20:58.:21:04.

David Longhurst, who died at Heverlee 22 years ago.

:21:04.:21:13.

He collapsed on the pitch, no contact with anyone else. They used

:21:13.:21:16.

mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and whatever they had available, but

:21:16.:21:21.

they could not get him back to consciousness.

:21:21.:21:29.

He a terribly sad story there. All late kick-off at 11:35pm.

:21:29.:21:32.

Another blow for Newcastle Falcons as they tried to seal their place

:21:32.:21:37.

in the Premiership. The director of rugby Gary Gold admitted there was

:21:37.:21:46.

no we provide for his side as they lost 19 have the nine -- 19-9.

:21:46.:21:53.

Worcester's Alex Grove went over with the only try of the game.

:21:53.:21:57.

They were even denied a losing Boris point. They are still eight

:21:57.:22:00.

points adrift at the bottom of the lead.

:22:00.:22:05.

Away from sport, a treat for lovers of Alston's suite of the star Bjork

:22:05.:22:11.

is famous for confectionery and turns are the stuff is still

:22:11.:22:16.

produced in the city today. -- a treat for lovers of all things

:22:16.:22:26.
:22:26.:22:29.

The there is something in chocolate Coldfield bromide. If you smell it

:22:29.:22:35.

and do not beat it makes you grumpy. The first thing visitors get to do

:22:35.:22:39.

is eat chocolate, but only after some top tasting tips.

:22:39.:22:43.

The is is where we taste for chocolate, first of all with

:22:43.:22:48.

looking at it, then the snap, then we have the smell. And of course,

:22:48.:22:58.
:22:58.:22:58.

the taste. Let it waft around your tongue. You immediately feel happy,

:22:58.:23:03.

contented and relaxed. That is the way to taste chocolate.

:23:03.:23:07.

It's is the only visitor attraction where you can eat exhibit.

:23:07.:23:11.

We have been 25 years creating this visitor attraction.

:23:11.:23:14.

I know this is what you have been waiting for, getting down and dirty

:23:14.:23:19.

with the chocolate. Here is that chief chocolate here will be

:23:19.:23:25.

teaching me to hand-rolled truffles. We have some people did truffles

:23:25.:23:34.

Phil de Nash. He put them in your hand and roll them with chocolate.

:23:35.:23:41.

-- full of ganache. The idea is to make them a nice and rustic. It is

:23:41.:23:45.

thicker than expected. That is the gold or butter, it will give a nice

:23:45.:23:52.

shine. -- the cork or butter. I could certainly eat them at a

:23:52.:23:56.

quick rate, but the beauty of this place is that it understands the

:23:56.:24:06.
:24:06.:24:09.

attraction intimately. Chocolate would definitely have

:24:09.:24:15.

melted today, wouldn't it? It is boiling. A lovely day, cycled to

:24:15.:24:18.

boiling. A lovely day, cycled to work for the first time. Can we do

:24:18.:24:22.

that for the rest of the week? A well, it has been remarkable

:24:22.:24:26.

today. This is the sort of whether we would be happy with at the

:24:26.:24:29.

height of some her. The temperatures are really out of the

:24:29.:24:36.

ordinary. Today we hit 21 Celsius inland, Keswick hitting that magic

:24:36.:24:41.

70 degrees Fahrenheit for the second day in a role. This is the

:24:41.:24:44.

senior study of that dramatic rescue operation, this evening it

:24:44.:24:48.

is a lot quieter you add Bootham Crescent, a family's making the

:24:48.:24:53.

most of the Sun's raised this evening. It is nice to have

:24:53.:24:56.

sunshine this evening thanks to the clock change to British Summer Time

:24:56.:24:59.

at the weekend. A quick look ahead tells us nothing will change very

:24:59.:25:06.

quickly. The next few days are fine and dry, later things will start to

:25:06.:25:12.

grunt louder and cooler, as well. We can see a big anticyclone, high

:25:12.:25:17.

pressure stays with us. Over the next few days the centre and drifts

:25:17.:25:20.

from east to west and eventually introduces a north-westerly wind.

:25:20.:25:26.

That will cool things don't over the tale of the week and may be

:25:26.:25:30.

some rain by the weekend. Between now and then it is essentially

:25:30.:25:36.

bone-dry. You will be lucky to spot any cloud in the sky at all. More

:25:36.:25:40.

of the same this evening, clear skies and light winds, and all the

:25:40.:25:45.

heat building up in the ground today just radiates away and at the

:25:45.:25:50.

temperatures drop a wave. Most places down to two or three Celsius.

:25:50.:25:56.

Low-lying areas close to freezing, a touch of frost. Some mist patches

:25:56.:26:01.

in the river valley bottoms. In the morning, early morning mist should

:26:01.:26:06.

lift quickly and temperatures will climb quickly, because like today

:26:06.:26:16.

it is unbroken broken -- unbroken sky. Highs tomorrow, in London
