Welcome to Monday's Look North. In tonight's headlines - saved from

the sand - a warning from rescuers, after a two-hour operation to help

a man, trapped after digging on the beach.

He was very frightened but he remained calm throughout. We had 45

people here digging away. Campaigners battling to save

Darlington Football Club turn down thousands of pounds from a mystery

investor. We'll have the latest. And how a company in Dover could

throw a lifeline to this once- famous floating nightclub.

The emergency services have today issued a new warning about the

dangers of digging on beaches after a man became trapped in a sand dune

on a Northumberland beach. It happened on Druridge Bay. 40

rescuers spent two hours digging him out. He was buried up to his

neck and at one point, he had to be given oxygen.

On such a beautiful evening, it is hard to believe that this was the

scene of such frantic activity at about this time last night. This is

where the tragedy started to unfold. It seems incredible when you hear

about how many people were involved and how long they talk to get him

out, that he wasn't more seriously injured. In a split-second, the

fund in the sunshine turned to a desperate battle to save a man's

life. The tons of sand which collapsed on to him had pinned him

up to his neck. Rescuers say only his head was visible and the

enormous weight of sound packed around his body meant he could

hardly breathe. Paramedics had to give him oxygen throughout his

ordeal. For the first few seconds, they probably laughed and then

realised they were stuck and in a dangerous situation. Fortunately,

they called 999 early and we were able to get here soon after they

called. The growing army of rescuers frantically dug at this

sand around him but as fast as they kept digging it out, more kept

tonnes before we could get to the sand around him. Two people have

been digging a hole, we don't know why. It is a constant worry for us

because the nature of sand is it is unstable. If we York, if I did a

little hole here, see how that sound runs down. It will keep on

running. Eventually, they managed to haul him free and the ambulance

took him to hospital where he was found to be none the worse for his

ordeal. Craig Curran wasn't so lucky. He died on a beach in Wales

five years ago when the sand tunnel he did with his family collapsed on

top of him. Some have made light of what has happened here but it

really was a potentially a very John Whitehall. It wasn't a joke,

was it? It certainly wasn't a joke. It could have been a lot worse than

it was if it hadn't have been for the dedication and professionalism.

firearms without certificates. It comes after armed officers stopped

a car on the A189 near the debt dead -- near the North Sea to the

area of Ashington on Saturday. A man and a woman were detained.

Further arrests were made in North Seaton and Newbiggin where never

firearm and ammunition were found. The court case against Sunderland

footballer need -- Lee Cattermole has been adjourned again. He

appeared before Newcastle magistrates two weeks ago but was

in court today. His case has been adjourned until 16th April.
