Welcome to Look North. In the programme tonight: They are | :00:10. | :00:17.
losing their jobs but not their generosity. Alcan workers are done | :00:17. | :00:21.
Nateing 30,000 to local charities. It shows good things can come out | :00:21. | :00:25.
of a bad situation. Framed by his own colleagues and | :00:25. | :00:29.
sent to jail. Former Cleveland police officer, Sultan Alam, talks | :00:29. | :00:34.
about the impact on his life. always wanted to leave my mark on | :00:34. | :00:38.
the police service. Many people will say I have. But it is not the | :00:38. | :00:43.
mark I wanted to leave. This man owns this year's grand | :00:43. | :00:47.
national favourite. Find out why he's giving his horse awhich on the | :00:47. | :00:51.
day of the wig race. And running for gold, the couple entering the | :00:51. | :00:57.
London Marathon to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. They know | :00:57. | :01:05.
who to expect. I was overtaken by five people running in step! It was | :01:05. | :01:09.
a bit unfair! Middlesbrough and Carlisle enter the home straight in | :01:09. | :01:13.
the play-off places. But it was a bad night for Sunderland as Everton | :01:13. | :01:23.
:01:23. | :01:29. | ||
ended their FA Cup dream for this We start with a remarkable story. | :01:29. | :01:35.
It comes courtesy of the 500 plus workers at the Alcan aluminium | :01:35. | :01:39.
plant in Northumberland. The plant begins its close-down tomorrow. | :01:39. | :01:43.
They'll all lose their jobs. Over the years, the workers have built | :01:43. | :01:48.
up their own social fund. It has reached 30,000. As our reporter | :01:48. | :01:53.
tells us, they've decided to give it all way away. It is the sort of | :01:53. | :01:57.
story we don't often get the chance to tell.. The news brought us this | :01:57. | :02:02.
and this and this. So let's cheer ourselves up with this and this and | :02:02. | :02:06.
this. Three charities, three cheques, | :02:06. | :02:10.
each for 10,000. The money's been saved over the years for things | :02:10. | :02:14.
like Christmas parties and when their jobs went, this lot decided | :02:14. | :02:19.
they'd like to help not themselves but others. You've restored faith | :02:19. | :02:24.
in human nature for a lot of people, you and your pals here. Frplt it | :02:24. | :02:28.
just goes to show out of a bad situation that some good things can | :02:28. | :02:35.
come. This is one of them. You're terrific. Thank you. Among those to | :02:35. | :02:40.
benefit, five-year-old Archie Anderson who has cerebral palsy. | :02:40. | :02:44.
He's off to the United States where surgeons will operate to improve | :02:44. | :02:49.
his mobility. You're going to America now? Yes. Are you looking | :02:49. | :02:55.
forward to is the it? No. Why not? The answer was supposed to be yes! | :02:55. | :02:59.
When we got a phone call we were overwhelmed. I was in floods of | :02:59. | :03:05.
tears. It was amazing. It means we've hit our target and we can go. | :03:05. | :03:11.
We can get the physiotherapy and everything Archie needs when he | :03:11. | :03:14.
comes back. I can't thank people enough. It is just sensational. It | :03:14. | :03:19.
makes such a huge difference. People can keep the money for | :03:19. | :03:23.
themselves. To give it to a local charity that's trying to save | :03:23. | :03:27.
children's lives every day, it is just a huge, huge gesture. These | :03:27. | :03:31.
are people, of course, who could do with that money themselves? This is | :03:31. | :03:38.
it. It is so much appreciated more so for that reason. For people in | :03:38. | :03:44.
this situation to be thinking of charities, it's something else in | :03:44. | :03:47.
itself. You just can't believe that's going to be something on | :03:47. | :03:50.
their mind when there are so many other things on their mind, whether | :03:50. | :03:55.
they can get other jobs etc. A lot of people worked here. Now it's | :03:55. | :03:59.
coming to an end it seemed the just thing to do. Pass it down to good | :03:59. | :04:05.
causes. Were you not tempted to keep it? No, never. There was a few | :04:05. | :04:09.
options but everybody seemed to agree this is the best thing. It | :04:09. | :04:14.
has put a real feel good factor across the place. And I think for | :04:14. | :04:19.
years to come, people will feel proud of what they've done. Do you | :04:19. | :04:23.
know what, you've put the biggest smile on my face I've had for aged. | :04:23. | :04:29.
The applause was for the Ben fisheries. They should have been a | :04:29. | :04:35.
-- applauding themselves. What a fabulous gesture. | :04:35. | :04:39.
He was a former police officer. He was sent to jail for a crime he | :04:39. | :04:43.
didn't commit. Sultan Alam was framed by his own colleagues at | :04:43. | :04:48.
Cleveland Police were and convicted of handling stolen goods. He was | :04:48. | :04:58.
:04:58. | :04:58. | ||
later freed and after a 17-year fight was awarded 400,000 in kofrp | :04:58. | :05:04.
saigs. He's been talking to our reporter Stuart Whincup. | :05:04. | :05:09.
It destroyed pretty much every facet of my life. None of this | :05:10. | :05:15.
should have happened. It was deliberate. It was malicious. | :05:15. | :05:22.
Sultan Alam was the as the court heard stitched up by his own fellow | :05:22. | :05:26.
police officers. Jailed for a crime he didn't commit. His two young | :05:26. | :05:30.
daughters saw their father branded a criminal. They have suffered | :05:30. | :05:35.
things no children should have to go through really. That's probably | :05:35. | :05:39.
the most painful part of it. Parents can tolerate pain, but when | :05:39. | :05:46.
it comes to their children, it is on a whole different level. | :05:46. | :05:50.
case made headlines but he was eventually cleared of handling | :05:50. | :05:55.
stolen goods. After a 17-year legal fight he was awarded 400,000 in | :05:55. | :06:02.
composition. -- compensation. He'll find out how much he'll receive in | :06:03. | :06:08.
loss of earnings next month. I have no idea where my career would have | :06:08. | :06:14.
gone. Not knowing is very, very painful. Now, Sultan Alam's taking | :06:14. | :06:19.
legal action against the Police Federation. He says it abandoned | :06:20. | :06:24.
him just three weeks before his compensation hearing leaving him to | :06:24. | :06:28.
defend itself. The federation cannot comment because of the | :06:28. | :06:32.
ongoing investigation. But Alam says the way he was treated was | :06:32. | :06:38.
appalling. I can only describe it as victimisation. Each time I've | :06:38. | :06:44.
felt as if I'm not only fighting for my rights and for justice with | :06:44. | :06:47.
Cleveland police, I've also been fighting the Police Federation. | :06:48. | :06:52.
altogether of money, he says, will compensate him and his family for | :06:52. | :07:02.
:07:02. | :07:04. | ||
the pain and suffering they've endured. | :07:04. | :07:09.
Parts of Tyneside and Teesside are in the top ten in a list of local | :07:09. | :07:13.
authorities with the biggest truancy problems. Almost 9% of | :07:13. | :07:17.
pupils in Newcastle and Middlesbrough are persist tently | :07:17. | :07:23.
absent from school making them the 5th and sixth worst areas in | :07:23. | :07:29.
England. Areas of North Yorkshire are now | :07:29. | :07:31.
officially in drought. The Environment Agency says the public | :07:31. | :07:34.
water supply should not be affected but it is concerned about the | :07:35. | :07:39.
levels of the River Derwent and its catchments in the Ryedale and | :07:39. | :07:42.
Scarborough districts. Staying in North Yorkshire, it is | :07:42. | :07:47.
not somewhere you'd expect to catch the Tour de France. Officials could | :07:47. | :07:56.
make a bid to stage the bike race in 2016. The hills, Dales and | :07:56. | :08:03.
scenic coastline would present an awesome challenge for the cyclists. | :08:03. | :08:09.
Officials from the committee are to be in Veited over to assess the bid. | :08:09. | :08:13.
We know how highly Yorkshire things of itself. But today's conference | :08:13. | :08:18.
at the Barbican in York was about sharing God's County with others. | :08:18. | :08:22.
Tourism is Yorkshire's biggest industry employing a quarter of a | :08:22. | :08:26.
million people and earning about 7 billion a year. Today, saw the | :08:26. | :08:30.
official launch of the county's promotional video which aims to | :08:30. | :08:35.
build on the 200 million plus annual visits already being made. A | :08:35. | :08:38.
five-year business plan aims to grow the Yorkshire brand worldwide. | :08:38. | :08:43.
But the big news was the county is bidding to bring home one of the | :08:43. | :08:48.
most prestigious events in the sporting calendar. For Tour de | :08:48. | :08:54.
France read Tour de Dales. Can you imagine the cyclists racing in | :08:54. | :08:59.
their tense and twenties through the North York Moors Nash mal park. | :08:59. | :09:04.
Leyburn, through the Dales. It doesn't get more stunning than that. | :09:04. | :09:08.
That iconic scenery of Yorkshire will go global. Tour organisers are | :09:08. | :09:12.
expected over in May to consider a possible route. But a final | :09:12. | :09:22.
decision on the 2016 tour isn't expected for a couple of years. | :09:22. | :09:25.
Catching up with a story we brought you on Tuesday's Look North. A | :09:25. | :09:30.
house in Ferryhill in County Durham which was up for auction with a | :09:30. | :09:37.
starting price for just 1 sold for 2,850. Standing next to the main | :09:37. | :09:41.
line of the east coast railway it has been standing empty for nearly | :09:41. | :09:49.
a decade. The winner bid bought the house for a family. | :09:49. | :09:56.
The pasty tax have been cut in half by Ladbrokes. George Osborne was | :09:56. | :10:01.
asked when he last bout a Greg's pasty. He couldn't remember. The | :10:01. | :10:08.
plan to fight charge on freshly made sievery products. Gregs say it | :10:08. | :10:10.
a tax on people who are already hard-pressed. | :10:11. | :10:16.
The man who's giving away the grand national favourite and an Easter | :10:16. | :10:21.
egg hunt with a difference. We meet The Artist who created these little | :10:21. | :10:24.
treasures. And a beautiful evening here on the | :10:24. | :10:29.
town moor in Newcastle and across the north-east and Cumbria. Will | :10:29. | :10:32.
this great weather hold? I'll be back with a forecast at the end of | :10:32. | :10:40.
the rest of tonight's news. As we heard at the top of the | :10:40. | :10:45.
programme, one of the Ben fisheries of today's generosity by the | :10:45. | :10:51.
workers of Alcan is the Freeman Hospital, the heart unit. It was | :10:51. | :10:55.
the charity of Graham Wylie. His two-year-old daughter Keira is a | :10:55. | :11:00.
patient there. Graham owns the favourite for next month's grand | :11:00. | :11:04.
national nal. He handed over ownership of the horse for the day | :11:04. | :11:11.
to raise  2000. Some men spend a lifetime dreaming | :11:11. | :11:16.
of owning the grand national favourite. And former Sage owner | :11:16. | :11:22.
Graham Wylie is that lucky man. And, he's giving it away. The horse is | :11:22. | :11:26.
Prince de Beauchene. He's 8-1 favourite with the bookies. On | :11:26. | :11:32.
grand national day, he'll be owned by Newcastle Falcons owner Semore | :11:32. | :11:35.
Kurdi after a charity auction to raise thousands of pounds for the | :11:35. | :11:39.
children's heart unit fund. When the auction took place last year, | :11:39. | :11:44.
the prize on offer was merely the ownership of a horse for a day. It | :11:44. | :11:49.
was only when the two men met last week that Graham told see more he | :11:49. | :11:53.
was giving him the favourite for the grand Nash in a nal and if | :11:53. | :12:00.
Prince de Beauchene wins, it will be Semore's name not Graham's which | :12:00. | :12:05.
goes on the grand national role of honour. No, I'm not mad. I'm doing | :12:05. | :12:08.
it for the charity. My daughter was there, had three operations. What | :12:08. | :12:14.
can I do to say thank you. This is the best way, to raise as much | :12:14. | :12:19.
money as I can and using my horse is a great way of doing it. Good | :12:19. | :12:23.
luck to Semore and the charity. After the operation last December, | :12:24. | :12:29.
doctors at the Freeman told Graham his own jockey-sized stature might | :12:29. | :12:35.
be the key to Keira's future well- being. They said as long as she | :12:35. | :12:43.
stays pet eat then this may be her last operation. That's great news. | :12:43. | :12:49.
Great also paid tribute to the workers at Alcan for their | :12:49. | :12:53.
generosity in handing over 10,000 from their own social fund to help | :12:53. | :12:58.
the heart unit's cause. It is a very sad situation. Everyone | :12:58. | :13:01.
doesn't want to see people losing their jobs. But for them to make | :13:01. | :13:04.
such a gesture, given the circumstances they face, is | :13:04. | :13:14.
:13:14. | :13:16. | ||
tremendous. What brave men. What generous gesture. | :13:16. | :13:22.
Poor diet et, not enough exercise and lack of respect sums up some | :13:22. | :13:27.
people's opinions of young people nowadays N York, she are trying to | :13:27. | :13:30.
tackle all these problems in vegetables. A scheme is turning | :13:30. | :13:36.
unused land in the heart of the city's estates into veg gardens. | :13:36. | :13:41.
Vandalised, unloved and eventually unused. This was a play area which | :13:41. | :13:45.
is now going back to the community as a garden. It is the first of | :13:45. | :13:48.
then which will appear in York in the next three years of the | :13:48. | :13:53.
All will be on estates like this. All will be looked after by the | :13:53. | :13:57.
people who live nearby. The kids are crucial. | :13:57. | :14:02.
I guess a stereotype is the children coming along in an evening | :14:02. | :14:06.
and will destroy it. By working with them, we make them feel it is | :14:06. | :14:10.
theirs. Building that ownership and hopefully they'll wanted to protect | :14:10. | :14:15.
it. The steel fence will become a living wall, branches instead of | :14:15. | :14:20.
bars. The green space is being turned into vegetable beds. The | :14:20. | :14:24.
best possible food for anyone prepared to grow it. For the moment, | :14:24. | :14:30.
there's enthusiastic support. like doing all the willow and stuff. | :14:30. | :14:35.
I'm really enjoying it. It's really fun. You get to take time off | :14:35. | :14:38.
school. I really enjoy doing the digging. The local secondary | :14:38. | :14:43.
school's providing the muddle. These are the kids who live here | :14:43. | :14:48.
and they'll be the ones who benefit. So will the school. It helps with | :14:48. | :14:52.
improvement in behaviour. Some of our children are not keen on being | :14:52. | :14:56.
stuck in class all day. It is not to get out and get hands on, get | :14:56. | :15:02.
involved in something physical. Not every child's academic they've | :15:02. | :15:07.
something to offer. It has been really beneficial. They are | :15:07. | :15:11.
planning for the long-term. Maybe life-long. Planting seeds and trees | :15:11. | :15:21.
:15:21. | :15:27. | ||
that will bear many different What a good idea a? If most of us | :15:27. | :15:31.
were lucky to make it through 50 years of marriage, we might | :15:31. | :15:41.
celebrate by taking a cruise. Not for one couple. Chris and Charm | :15:41. | :15:47.
Robson have marked their milestone by entering a marathon. | :15:47. | :15:53.
A gentle jog out of their warm marks the start of their daily | :15:53. | :16:00.
routine. The couple vow and last year to run the London Marathon for | :16:01. | :16:07.
special reasons. It was Chris's idea. He has run the London | :16:07. | :16:16.
Marathon twice. He suggested it. The problem is getting a place. | :16:16. | :16:26.
:16:26. | :16:27. | ||
Twyman inch to get one. From that moment on, that was the schedule. | :16:27. | :16:31.
This is what they will face. Tens of thousands of runners on the | :16:31. | :16:41.
:16:41. | :16:45. | ||
streets of London. Chris and Charm are raising money for a charity. | :16:45. | :16:52.
People dress up as pantomime horses. I was overtaken last time by a | :16:52. | :17:00.
Centipede. Five people were running instep which I thought was unfair. | :17:00. | :17:09.
It is unlikely to be easy. Last week, I ran six miles. It made me | :17:09. | :17:19.
:17:19. | :17:21. | ||
tired. I was going to say you would never catch my wife doing that. She | :17:21. | :17:30.
hasn't started training for her marathon yet. | :17:30. | :17:40.
:17:40. | :17:43. | ||
The Wembley dream is over for another year. | :17:43. | :17:49.
He started arriving They started arriving early for what the | :17:49. | :17:52.
majority of a 43,000 crowd hoped would be one of those famous FA Cup | :17:52. | :17:55.
nights. The Sunderland team coach dropped the players off well before | :17:55. | :17:59.
kick-off, which is more than can be said of the Everton bus - held up | :17:59. | :18:01.
in traffic to the fury of boss David Moyes. | :18:01. | :18:04.
But roared on by nearly 7,000 visiting supporters in a proper | :18:04. | :18:06.
cup-tie atmosphere that only seemed to galvanise the visitors, who | :18:06. | :18:09.
seemed hell bent at booking a Wembley semi-final against | :18:09. | :18:11.
Merseyside neighbours Liverpool. And by the end, that's exactly what | :18:11. | :18:13.
they'd achieved leaving the Sunderland boss understandably | :18:13. | :18:14.
dejected. Everton dominated the first half | :18:14. | :18:17.
with first Sunderland's nemesis Tim Cahill and then Nikica Jelavic | :18:17. | :18:19.
bringing the best out of Simon Mignolet. | :18:19. | :18:22.
It was no surprise when Everton took the lead - a beautifully | :18:22. | :18:24.
worked goal finished by the dangerous Jelavic. A I thought we | :18:24. | :18:31.
were ready for the Game. From that viewpoint, it is hard to take. It | :18:31. | :18:41.
:18:41. | :18:49. | ||
is such a big incentive. It was no surprise when Everton took the lead. | :18:49. | :18:51.
Keith This was about the closest the home | :18:51. | :18:55.
side came to a first-half equaliser. And it only got worse in the second | :18:55. | :18:58.
half with the Merseysiders going 2 up courtesy of an own goal from | :18:58. | :19:01.
substitute David Vaughan - who'd only been on the pitch for 4 | :19:01. | :19:03.
minutes. The well-shackled Sessegonon did | :19:03. | :19:06.
manage to hit the post and and after Jelavic went close again, | :19:06. | :19:13.
Fraizer Campbell threatened a late consolation but it wasn't to be. | :19:13. | :19:15.
In truth Everton, dangerous in attack and solid in defence, | :19:15. | :19:19.
deserved their comfortable win. For Sunderland, there's a league trip | :19:19. | :19:24.
to Man City to look forward to or maybe not. Wembley will have to | :19:24. | :19:33.
wait for another year. We didn't perform well enough. That is | :19:33. | :19:43.
:19:43. | :19:44. | ||
disappointing. To see me at my Spear just before the Game, the | :19:44. | :19:54.
:19:54. | :19:55. | ||
noise level. It was a great evening. Again night for football and we | :19:55. | :20:04.
disappointed. There was better news for the Quorn Carlisle and | :20:04. | :20:14.
