Hello, welcome to Look North. In the programme tonight: The latest on the | :00:00. | :00:09.
birthday horror in Turkey. Three members of a North East family | :00:09. | :00:13.
shot. One is dead. Police arrest the gardener from | :00:13. | :00:16.
their luxury villa after he goes berserk with a pump—action shotgun. | :00:16. | :00:20.
Also tonight, Nissan unveils the luxury car it'll be building on | :00:21. | :00:26.
Wearside creating nearly 300 jobs. And the rise of the tattoo. Why are | :00:26. | :00:31.
more and more people in our region getting themselves inked? | :00:31. | :00:36.
In sport. As football's "Entertainers" prepare to take on | :00:36. | :00:39.
the "Invincibles" we talk to goalkeeper Steve Harper about his | :00:39. | :00:53.
big charity match at St James' Park. And we counted down to the great | :00:53. | :00:54.
North run. They were enjoying a holiday in a | :00:54. | :01:12.
luxury villa in Turkey. They were preparing for a birthday | :01:12. | :01:14.
celebration. Then the shooting started, and three generations of | :01:15. | :01:22.
the same family were gunned down. Anne Bury was killed. She was 56, | :01:22. | :01:29.
and lived in the North Yorkshire village of Swainby. Her 24—year—old | :01:29. | :01:33.
son, Alex, was shot and remains in a Turkish hospital tonight. His | :01:33. | :01:39.
grandmother, Cecille, from Marton, near Middlesbrough, was also hurt. | :01:39. | :01:42.
The family were in Turkey celebrating Anne Bury's birthday. | :01:42. | :01:45.
They were staying at the villa in the popular holiday resort of | :01:45. | :01:47.
Dalyan. It's understood the shootings happened after an argument | :01:47. | :01:50.
with the local gardener employed at the villa. | :01:50. | :01:52.
We'll be going live to Swainby shortly for reaction in the village. | :01:52. | :01:56.
But for the latest news on the situation we're joined by BBC | :01:56. | :01:58.
Correspondent James Reynolds, who's in Istanbul. James, is it clear yet | :01:58. | :02:02.
what exactly happened? We are still trying to piece | :02:02. | :02:07.
together the sequence of events. There seems to have been an argument | :02:07. | :02:12.
over the weekend. The police were called in. They teamed the | :02:12. | :02:18.
46—year—old gardener, a local Turkish citizen. He was then | :02:18. | :02:21.
released. We understand that he returned to develop and began | :02:21. | :02:26.
shooting. He killed one person and injured two others. He was captured | :02:26. | :02:37.
shortly afterwards. A statement says that the chief suspect has been | :02:37. | :02:42.
arrested and is in custody while an investigation is underway. We | :02:42. | :02:44.
understand that that suspect appeared in court earlier today. The | :02:44. | :02:51.
judge ordered him to be arrested and held in custody. We do not know if | :02:51. | :02:56.
he pleads innocent or guilty. We do not know when a child will be | :02:56. | :03:02.
carried out. We understand the Foreign Office is providing support | :03:02. | :03:07.
to the family. We understand that Cecille has been discharged from one | :03:08. | :03:14.
hospital, and Alex is said to be out of intensive care and in a stable | :03:14. | :03:19.
condition in a separate hall —— in a separate hospital. | :03:19. | :03:24.
The reaction in the village of Swainby has been a mixture of shock | :03:24. | :03:27.
and disbelief. Our reporter Stuart Whincup has been speaking to friends | :03:27. | :03:31.
of the Bury family and joins us now. Stuart. | :03:31. | :03:39.
People have been telling us this is usually a quiet village. All day | :03:39. | :03:49.
there has been a police presence around the family home. They have | :03:49. | :03:53.
been talking of the difficulty they have been facing. They have been | :03:53. | :04:00.
desperately trying to find out news from Turkey. | :04:00. | :04:13.
Catherine Bury was described as the best neighbour anyone could have. | :04:13. | :04:19.
This afternoon there was shock that such a popular family would be | :04:19. | :04:23.
caught up in such a violent attack. These people have lives next door | :04:23. | :04:31.
for 30 years. She has been such a good neighbour | :04:31. | :04:34.
to us. I do not think we can ever replace her. It is unbelievable. I | :04:34. | :04:48.
have got over the shock of it now, but at the start I could not see | :04:48. | :05:08.
anything. Because I have a family of my own, it's just really broke my | :05:08. | :05:13.
heart. For a family to go through that. I never saw her get angry or | :05:13. | :05:22.
edited in her life how this happened I cannot imagine. | :05:22. | :05:34.
Here at the Hotel where Alex worked managers have released a statement | :05:34. | :05:37.
saying they are shocked and saddened by what has happened. They say their | :05:37. | :05:49.
thoughts go to his family. Back at the village friends and | :05:49. | :05:53.
neighbours are awaiting anxiously for any news. It is a shocking thing | :05:53. | :05:57.
to happen anywhere, but because it is such a shocking contrast to this | :05:57. | :06:03.
city —— to this village, it makes it seem even worse. It is unbelievable. | :06:03. | :06:13.
Prayers for the family will be said of the service in the village | :06:14. | :06:19.
tomorrow. Some good news this afternoon. Cecille, in her 80s, was | :06:19. | :06:25.
released from hospital. Alex is said to be in a stable | :06:26. | :06:31.
condition in hospital. The family is receiving support from the Foreign | :06:31. | :06:41.
Office. We will have more later. Nissan's unveiled the car it says | :06:42. | :06:44.
will help continue its Wearside factory's success story. The company | :06:45. | :06:50.
hasn't said yet what it will cost, but it'll carry the company's luxury | :06:50. | :06:54.
Infiniti brand. Chris Stewart reports. | :06:54. | :07:04.
Two things now roll out regularly from this plant. Cars and good news. | :07:04. | :07:10.
This, The Sun hopes, will be both. It is on display for the first time | :07:10. | :07:19.
at the Frankfurt motor show. The company is convinced the journalists | :07:19. | :07:24.
will love it. They are convinced the public will buy it. 300 new workers | :07:24. | :07:29.
are being recruited to build it. A further 700 jobs will be created in | :07:29. | :07:34.
the supply chain. It will be the fifth model N production on | :07:34. | :07:39.
Wearside. This is now comfortably the most productive car plant in | :07:39. | :07:45.
Europe with more than 6000 employees turning out more than 500,000 cars | :07:45. | :07:50.
per year. The new car will go into production in 2015. | :07:50. | :07:55.
The Labour leader Ed Miliband has repeated calls on the Government not | :07:55. | :07:58.
to privatise the East Coast Main Line rail service. | :07:58. | :08:00.
The business was re—nationalised four years ago when National Express | :08:00. | :08:04.
pulled out, and makes profits of around £3 million a week. | :08:04. | :08:07.
Mr Miliband told the TUC Conference in Bournemouth that the service | :08:07. | :08:18.
should be kept in public hands. East Coast has been successful in | :08:19. | :08:23.
public hands. The question is do you, on the basis of..., send it | :08:23. | :08:29.
back into the private sector or, or do you keep it in public ownership, | :08:29. | :08:35.
and we see a cheeky kept in public ownership. | :08:35. | :08:41.
Bidders hoping to run local TV stations in Middlesbrough, | :08:41. | :08:44.
Scarborough and York have until the end of tomorrow to lodge their | :08:44. | :08:47.
interest. They're part of the second wave of a roll—out of 65 stations | :08:47. | :08:50.
that will cover the country.They're being part—funded by £40 million of | :08:50. | :08:54.
BBC money. But, according to media experts, the local stations will | :08:54. | :08:57.
have to fight hard to attract advertising revenue. Our Business | :08:57. | :09:07.
Correspondent Ian Reeve reports. Now I want to introduce a local | :09:07. | :09:12.
port. This is local TV from the 1970s. The | :09:12. | :09:16.
modern—day offering of course will be rather different. | :09:16. | :09:18.
The website of the company that's won the Newcastle franchise boasts | :09:18. | :09:22.
of being a mirror that reflects the local zeitgeist. | :09:22. | :09:23.
Middlesbrough, Scarborough and York are all ready to join Tyneside in | :09:23. | :09:27.
the second wave of franchises. Tomorrow is the deadline for | :09:27. | :09:29.
companies interested in transmitting local TV in those areas. | :09:29. | :09:40.
Of course we've seen local TV in the region before. Teesside had a cable | :09:40. | :09:42.
Channel dedicated to Middlesbrough Football Club for seven years. | :09:42. | :09:47.
Its main presenter is now at the BBC, but says the channel's owner | :09:47. | :09:51.
thought there was a market for a broader offering. It began in one | :09:51. | :10:02.
programme Perry. It became a fully fledged Channel. There were toxic at | :10:02. | :10:10.
taking place —— a conversation that is to place that looked at the | :10:10. | :10:15.
possibility. Boro TV had the plug pulled in 2005. | :10:15. | :10:19.
Funding it had became an issue. And that according to industry experts | :10:19. | :10:22.
is the challenge facing local TV — fighting for advertising revenue. | :10:22. | :10:31.
They cannot understand how competitive that local advertising | :10:31. | :10:39.
market is. That is the markets that the news franchises will have to | :10:39. | :10:44.
survive in. And of course what the channels | :10:44. | :10:47.
show, their content, will also determine their success or failure. | :10:47. | :10:49.
Although this polished Channel in newsworthy Manchester closed after | :10:49. | :10:53.
12 years. Maybe the hyperlocal content of the | :10:53. | :10:57.
1970s is the way to go. We'll soon be able to judge, with the channels | :10:57. | :11:08.
coming on air next year. Still to come in tonight's | :11:08. | :11:11.
programme, we'll be hearing from Mo Farah ahead of Sunday's Great North | :11:11. | :11:12.
Run. And talking to this extraordinary | :11:12. | :11:15.
lady, who's fought back from a broken back to take part in the Run. | :11:15. | :11:25.
I will have the latest weather information. | :11:25. | :11:54.
It is estimated that one in five of us now boasts at a too. Academics | :11:54. | :12:09.
are now taking an interest. Whether you call them graffiti body at their | :12:09. | :12:12.
is no getting away from the fact that tattoos are everywhere. One in | :12:12. | :12:21.
five of us now has a tattoo. It is a trend that has not escaped academic | :12:21. | :12:33.
curiosity. People might get a tattoo to represent a trip. Song lyrics | :12:33. | :12:44.
which capture a moment. Very personalised symbols. | :12:44. | :12:49.
So what's caused our change in attitudes towards something that | :12:49. | :12:52.
only a couple of decades ago was the preserve of sailors, bikers and | :12:52. | :12:56.
convicts? Best ask a man who's been creating tattoos for a quarter of a | :12:56. | :13:00.
century. I have tattoo solicitors and accountants. Doctors, nurses, | :13:00. | :13:11.
policemen, even the odd MP has been tattooed. Now it is definitely | :13:11. | :13:18.
working class through to middle—class. I lost my mother to | :13:18. | :13:28.
cancer, so I am getting a piece to her. There will be a script with a | :13:28. | :13:50.
date of birth and date of death. A lot of females were struggling for | :13:50. | :14:00.
a tattoo design. My idea was to create a new tattoo magazine for | :14:00. | :14:05.
females that would combine the new fashion and trends. | :14:05. | :14:12.
Now, you still might not like them, but with everyone from Cheryl Cole | :14:12. | :14:14.
to the Prime Minister's wife sporting them, it's maybe inevitable | :14:15. | :14:18.
that we will all have to accept body ink as the new norm. Because let's | :14:18. | :14:22.
face it, one thing about tattoos is they won't go away. | :14:22. | :14:27.
And you can hear more personal tattoo stories on BBC Newcastle's | :14:27. | :14:29.
Breakfast show with Alfie and Charlie all this week. | :14:29. | :14:42.
The great North run is just a few days away. Today we meet a racehorse | :14:43. | :14:54.
trainer who broke her back. But she is back on her feet. She is ready | :14:54. | :15:03.
for the challenge. Horses played a huge part in her | :15:03. | :15:09.
road to recovery. She is ready for the great North run. Initially I was | :15:09. | :15:24.
paralysed. I had to major operations. I spent a lot of time in | :15:24. | :15:35.
a wheelchair. The inspiration for me was doing something for assistance | :15:35. | :15:41.
dogs. I've gradually started walking again. I started on a frame, | :15:41. | :15:48.
sticks, ended up walking on my own. Over the years I got stronger. The | :15:48. | :16:01.
more I did the better I got. Her love of horses helped get back in | :16:01. | :16:04.
the saddle almost before she was on her feet. I was able to get ack | :16:04. | :16:13.
riding very early, almost before I could walk. | :16:13. | :16:22.
Her family are proud of her recovery and will be cheering her on this | :16:22. | :16:28.
weekend. It is amazing. She has never actually been a runner. Her | :16:28. | :16:32.
sister was always a better runner than she was. I think she will do | :16:32. | :16:39.
it. It is a long way, but she is | :16:39. | :16:47.
determined to run every last mile I am determined not to walk. The only | :16:47. | :16:51.
thing that concerns me is being overtaken by somebody who is | :16:51. | :16:55.
walking. As long as that does not happen I will be happy that I have | :16:55. | :17:00.
set out —— that I have done what I set out to do. | :17:01. | :17:08.
Well, the elite athletes are also counting down to the big race. | :17:08. | :17:12.
Olympic, World and European Champion Mo Farah would love to add the Great | :17:12. | :17:16.
North Run to his list of victories and as part of his preparations he's | :17:16. | :17:19.
been training at high altitude in the French Pyrenees. But he knows he | :17:19. | :17:31.
faces some tough competition. Hopefully having my track speed will | :17:31. | :17:34.
give me more confidence. It will not be an easy race. It will be tough. | :17:34. | :17:47.
He is a great athlete. What he has achieved is amazing. | :17:47. | :17:57.
It would be good to have that title the great North run is a big race. | :17:57. | :18:03.
Well, you can watch the action from the Great City Games here on BBC One | :18:03. | :18:07.
at 1pm on Saturday. And the Great North Run is live from 9.30am on | :18:07. | :18:17.
Sunday — also on BBC One. On to football, and tomorrow | :18:17. | :18:20.
evening, at St James's Park, Newcastle fans have the chance to | :18:20. | :18:23.
say farewell, again, to a local lad who gave them 20 years' fabulous | :18:23. | :18:26.
service. A Newcastle Legends team will take on Italian greats AC | :18:26. | :18:29.
Milan, in goalkeeper Steve Harper's charity match. Steve joined me in | :18:29. | :18:32.
the studio earlier this afternoon, and I asked him how much he's | :18:32. | :18:40.
looking forward to his big night. I am looking forward to it. It has | :18:41. | :18:49.
been very stressful organising it. I am looking forward to the whistle | :18:49. | :18:52.
going tomorrow night and raising a lot of money. You have managed to | :18:52. | :19:10.
get Paolo di Canio. The charities are not exclusive to | :19:10. | :19:20.
Newcastle United fans. Fantastic to have him along. Hopefully he will | :19:20. | :19:32.
get a decent reception. He will get a bit of stick. It all adds to | :19:32. | :19:42.
hopefully a special day. An emotional day. It looks like it will | :19:42. | :19:53.
be your final farewell. This game was an opportunity to use my time | :19:53. | :19:57.
served to raise as much money as possible. Hopefully there will be a | :19:58. | :20:04.
carnival atmosphere. The key of the night is to raise as much money as | :20:04. | :20:18.
we can. We will get this one out of the way. It has sold 40,000 tickets | :20:18. | :20:28.
already bet you can pay at the door. | :20:28. | :20:31.
The flag that'll start the Cumbrian stage of The Tour of Britain next | :20:31. | :20:35.
week has been revealed. Designed by 11—year—old Hannah Atkinson as part | :20:35. | :20:37.
of a county—wide competition, the flag will start the race in Carlisle | :20:37. | :20:40.
on Monday. Cumbria is hosting a full stage of | :20:40. | :20:44.
the Tour, with the likes of Sir Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish | :20:44. | :20:47.
tackling the event's own mountain stage. | :20:47. | :20:51.
Now, Look North is once again looking for our regions' Sports | :20:51. | :20:53.
Kids. The youngsters can be talented, dedicated or simply great | :20:53. | :20:58.
triers. But they must be no older than fifteen. Last year, we featured | :20:58. | :21:02.
seven year—old Archie from Newcastle, who's a real Diamond. A | :21:02. | :21:04.
speedway fanatic, he impressed Newcastle Diamonds so much they made | :21:04. | :21:10.
him their official mascot. Then there was five year—old footballer | :21:10. | :21:13.
Dylan from County Durham who trains at the Martin Gray Academy. And | :21:13. | :21:17.
14—year—old Ellie from Carlisle, who's already one of the country's | :21:17. | :21:21.
top young cycle racers — and is on the British Cycling Talent Team. | :21:21. | :21:26.
So if you know a youngster who has a passion for a particular sport — | :21:26. | :21:30.
drop us a line at Sports Kids, Look North, BBC, Barrack Road, Newcastle, | :21:30. | :21:33.
NE99 2NE or e—mail us at [email protected]. | :21:33. | :21:43.
It's been a fantastic summer and if our e—mail inbox is anything to go | :21:43. | :21:49.
by, you've been making the most of the extra hours of sunshine to get | :21:49. | :21:52.
out with your cameras. Paul, you've got the proof. | :21:52. | :21:56.
To pick our winning August picture for our 2014 calendar, we asked a | :21:56. | :21:59.
photographer who specialises in outdoor shots. Alison Leddy went | :21:59. | :22:03.
back to studying in her 40s to follow her passion. Hannah Bayman | :22:03. | :22:08.
went to meet her on a shoot in her hometown of Blyth. | :22:08. | :22:21.
It is a scene which inspires countless photographers. I am down | :22:21. | :22:33.
here to three days a week. There is always something to see and to | :22:33. | :22:36.
photograph. When you are doing photography you are documenting the | :22:36. | :22:42.
moment that lasts for a lifetime. Our sun—soaked August made for a | :22:42. | :22:47.
stunning short list. From golden afternoons spent in wild flower | :22:47. | :22:49.
meadows, to blood—red sunsets, as temperatures rose higher than they | :22:49. | :22:52.
had done since 2006. Stargazers were treated to the | :22:52. | :22:55.
clearest skies for years as the annual Perseid meteor shower reached | :22:55. | :22:58.
its peak. With a faint glow of the Northern Lights to top off the | :22:58. | :23:00.
night. Our first ever Ashes Test stayed | :23:00. | :23:03.
mostly dry, allowing England to secure an outright victory in the | :23:03. | :23:06.
series against Australia, despite threatening clouds. They are | :23:06. | :23:15.
stunning images. So which is Alison's runner—up? I | :23:15. | :23:24.
have chosen this one. It is a beautiful sunrise to look at. | :23:24. | :23:27.
Her winner? Ashley Corr's misty morning | :23:27. | :23:34.
reflections at Buttermere, Cumbria. That is a perfect photo in my | :23:35. | :23:37.
opinion. The composition is outstanding. I will be happy to look | :23:38. | :23:47.
at this all year. This photograph will now become the oldest page on | :23:47. | :23:51.
the 2014 calendar. —— the August. Once those showers had been and gone | :23:51. | :24:16.
they worked their way out over the North Sea. Today there are not so | :24:16. | :24:31.
many under storms. —— thunderstorms. There were quite a range of | :24:31. | :24:42.

a birthday party at their luxury villa on Sunday when their gardener | :26:42. | :26:45.
opened fire with a pump—action shotgun. Catherine Bury was killed. | :26:45. | :26:52.
Her mother Cecille, 87, and son Alex, 24 were also shot. | :26:52. | :26:58.

We have heard how her son Alex is now in a stable condition. Her | :27:20. | :27:26.
mother has been discharged from hospital this afternoon. | :27:26. | :27:37.
