power cuts to thousands of homes. Now we can join the news | :00:00. | :00:00.
Welcome to Monday's Look North. The headlines. It has ruined my life. | :00:00. | :00:16.
The woman who leaked details about Cumbria | :00:17. | :00:22.
the travel delays continue this evening. Many trains are cancelled. | :00:23. | :00:29.
We're live with the latest. . She lost her daughter. Now a mother | :00:30. | :00:35.
is going to Downing Street to campaign for changes to the organ | :00:36. | :00:46.
donor register. The call never came. And the hidden prison sentence being | :00:47. | :00:54.
faced by many children. In sport, what does it mean to win a | :00:55. | :01:01.
derby match, well when you haven't won a match all season it looks like | :01:02. | :01:12.
this. It ruined my life, but I would do it | :01:13. | :01:18.
again. The words of Ree Brown, who has spoken publicly for the first | :01:19. | :01:23.
time about being suspended by Cumbria Police. In April she leaked | :01:24. | :01:27.
details to journalists of two chauffeur driven trips taken by the | :01:28. | :01:31.
county's Police and Crime Commissioner. The journeys cost a | :01:32. | :01:37.
total of ?700. They led to widespread criticism of Richard | :01:38. | :01:42.
Rhodes. She worked as a civilian for Cumbria | :01:43. | :01:48.
Police for more than a decade. But when Ree Brown highlighted what she | :01:49. | :01:51.
thought was inappropriate spending, she found herself under arrest. | :01:52. | :01:55.
Officers searched her home and removed electrical equipment. She | :01:56. | :01:59.
and her husband or question four hours. I was treated like a | :02:00. | :02:09.
criminal. It felt like my life was unravelling. I can't believe they | :02:10. | :02:20.
didn't. Ree Brown was working as the union representative. A colleague | :02:21. | :02:26.
notified of that Richard Rhodes had taken two chauffeur driven journeys | :02:27. | :02:30.
costing hundreds of pounds. He hadn't declared the expenses. So she | :02:31. | :02:36.
contacted the papers anonymously. Richard Rhodes has since apologised | :02:37. | :02:39.
for his mistake and repaid the money. This was at a time when the | :02:40. | :02:48.
force was making redundancies. I was spending most of my working life | :02:49. | :02:51.
working with people who were getting made redundant. Most people have | :02:52. | :02:57.
congratulated me. They said they thought I would get a slap on the | :02:58. | :03:06.
wrist. Ree Brown is suspended from work. She now takes antidepressants. | :03:07. | :03:15.
It has totally changed my life. I have been isolated. It has been the | :03:16. | :03:28.
worst 61 six months of my life. Do you regret doing it? I would try to | :03:29. | :03:35.
ensure the only person who went through everything I have gone | :03:36. | :03:43.
through as just me. What have Cumbria Police had to say? They have | :03:44. | :03:50.
said that there are processes that can be followed by whistle`blowers. | :03:51. | :03:56.
But Ree Brown said she believed those processes only applied to the | :03:57. | :04:01.
police force itself and not those involving the Police and Crime | :04:02. | :04:07.
Commissioner. Ree Brown remain suspended from work well the | :04:08. | :04:19.
investigation continues. We have escaped the extreme weather | :04:20. | :04:23.
that has battered much of southern England, but its effect are still | :04:24. | :04:27.
being felt here. The biggest problems have been on the railways. | :04:28. | :04:31.
Dozens of East Coast services to and from London were cancelled or | :04:32. | :04:35.
severely delayed. No services were running any hour out of King's | :04:36. | :04:40.
Cross. Services from Carlisle on the West Coast were also hit. Let's go | :04:41. | :04:50.
over to Darlington station. It has been a north`south divide | :04:51. | :04:54.
weather`wise for the past 24 hours. For anybody travelling, it has been | :04:55. | :05:07.
a real day of disruption. In York, I have been speaking to East Coast | :05:08. | :05:09.
Trains about how they have been coping. We we have been advising | :05:10. | :05:22.
passengers today not to travel if they are going to London. We are | :05:23. | :05:27.
working very hard to get everything back up and running. We normally run | :05:28. | :05:40.
156 services every day. It is having a big impact. We are sorry for the | :05:41. | :05:44.
disruption but I'm sure people will understand. The storm started at the | :05:45. | :05:53.
beginning of the half term break, so this affected many different people. | :05:54. | :06:00.
Business people. I have been speaking to people here who arrived | :06:01. | :06:09.
here only to be disappointed. I was travelling to a conference, but any | :06:10. | :06:15.
train south of Peterborough have been cancelled. I don't think I am | :06:16. | :06:21.
going anywhere today. I can see a lot of people are leaving. I'm | :06:22. | :06:24.
expecting bad news. It has been pretty bad. Farther south, there | :06:25. | :06:32.
have been tragic consequences. In the last couple of hours, we have | :06:33. | :06:37.
been hearing about how a Newcastle to Amsterdam fairy had to return to | :06:38. | :06:45.
say before it entered port. Anybody who has been delayed today as a | :06:46. | :06:50.
result of the trains, can use the tickets tomorrow. | :06:51. | :06:57.
A woman has told a court how she screamed and try to fight off a man | :06:58. | :07:00.
as she was been sexually assaulted on Teeside. Wayne Anthony Scott is | :07:01. | :07:05.
accused of rape, attempted rape and sexual assault. | :07:06. | :07:12.
The charges relate to two incidents involving one woman. In 2006 Wayne | :07:13. | :07:21.
Anthony Scott was kissing a woman and then wanted to take things for | :07:22. | :07:28.
the. The woman told the man now, but he continued. She schemed. She | :07:29. | :07:41.
thought neighbours would hear her. But he continued. He started | :07:42. | :07:47.
laughing. Eventually he stopped what he was doing. The woman said she | :07:48. | :07:53.
felt angry and scared. The second incident happened a short time | :07:54. | :08:01.
later. Wayne Anthony Scott to cover to cover in his car. When Anthony | :08:02. | :08:09.
Scott faces the separate charges of rape, attempted rape and sexual | :08:10. | :08:14.
assault. He denies all the charges. The case is expected to last five | :08:15. | :08:20.
days. The former Newcastle United | :08:21. | :08:24.
footballer Nile Ranger has denied raping a woman at a hotel in the | :08:25. | :08:30.
city. Ranger, 22, was accused of the attack in January. He attended court | :08:31. | :08:36.
today to formally denied the allegation. | :08:37. | :08:43.
A current Newcastle United midfielder has avoided prison but | :08:44. | :08:46.
was handed a seven`month suspended sentence today. The Ivory Coast | :08:47. | :08:54.
international pleaded guilty and has been ordered to complete 180 hours | :08:55. | :09:00.
of community work. Police have praised the behaviour of | :09:01. | :09:04.
football fans after yesterday 's Wear`Tyne derby. Double 120 arrests. | :09:05. | :09:13.
A canoeist who died after his vessel capsized has been named as Andrew | :09:14. | :09:22.
Poole on. Her baby daughter Miley died last | :09:23. | :09:28.
year after waiting for a heart transplant. Her mother has now | :09:29. | :09:32.
launched a campaign to see morning spit on the organ donor register. | :09:33. | :09:36.
Sharon Eckert is taking a petition to Downing Street. It calls for the | :09:37. | :09:46.
system to change. Holding onto the memories of her | :09:47. | :09:51.
baby daughter. Miley died last November. She was just 14 weeks old. | :09:52. | :09:59.
Miley was born with a heart defect. Her only hope of surviving was a | :10:00. | :10:10.
heart transplant. We have to create. Despite an urgent appeal, doctors | :10:11. | :10:18.
could not trace a donor. She was at the top of the list. It was a case | :10:19. | :10:29.
of waiting. It was horrendous. We were always waiting for the phone to | :10:30. | :10:37.
ring. But it never came. Although it was too late to save Miley, Sharon | :10:38. | :10:45.
Eckert has told her anger `` anguish into productivity. She once | :10:46. | :10:51.
everybody automatically enrolled on the organ donor register. Nobody | :10:52. | :11:01.
wants to lose their child. If people can help then they should do. This | :11:02. | :11:08.
change to the system would help so many people. On November the 12th, | :11:09. | :11:18.
she is planning to travel to Downing Street with the petition. It has | :11:19. | :11:23.
already been signed by 1500 people. She wants to present it to the Prime | :11:24. | :11:27.
Minister, in the hope that others needing a donor might have a greater | :11:28. | :11:40.
chance than Miley dead. `` dead. Coming up. Why this man's latest | :11:41. | :11:49.
adventure may prove to be one too many. And I will be here with the | :11:50. | :12:02.
weather. Having a family member sent to | :12:03. | :12:04.
prison is a difficult time for anybody. But what effect does it | :12:05. | :12:10.
have on children. More than 9000 children in the North East will | :12:11. | :12:14.
experience it. It is often be a mum or dad. In our region, a large | :12:15. | :12:21.
percentage of children with relative serving eight prison sentence from | :12:22. | :12:29.
Middlesbrough. I can spend a lot of time trying. It | :12:30. | :12:37.
is hard. Raising her daughter as a single parent, this woman does not | :12:38. | :12:44.
want to be identified. She is not believed or widowed. Her partner is | :12:45. | :12:52.
in prison. It is hard. Day`to`day life is hard. Going to visit dad in | :12:53. | :13:00.
prison is a mix of upsetting experience for mother and daughter. | :13:01. | :13:08.
Once we get there we do not want to leave. It is heartbreaking. I | :13:09. | :14:13.
remember sitting by the television and waiting by the phone. It was | :14:14. | :14:27.
very difficult. They both support others to have drink and drug | :14:28. | :14:41.
addictions. She helped me with my here. She was sat with me and we | :14:42. | :14:54.
were having fun. It made a big difference. They hope that this | :14:55. | :15:07.
story will provide inspiration. There will be a see is of reports | :15:08. | :15:17.
about this story. He ran from John O'Groats to lands | :15:18. | :15:21.
end in 40 days. But if that wasn't enough, he wore a fridge on his | :15:22. | :15:27.
back. This is the latest in a string of brutal challenges. This time he | :15:28. | :15:32.
may have done himself some serious damage. Medical experts are trying | :15:33. | :15:40.
to find out why the morning after the great North run they couldn't | :15:41. | :15:46.
walk. This man is a endurance runner. He | :15:47. | :15:50.
has become famous for completing impossible challenges. His most | :15:51. | :15:59.
recent challenge may have been one too far. The day after the Great | :16:00. | :16:05.
North Run, Tony walked up to find out that he could not walk. He now | :16:06. | :16:12.
faces the possibility that his efforts have resulted in serious | :16:13. | :16:22.
damage. The outcome will be that I cannot run for a while. As he | :16:23. | :16:29.
underwent an emergency scan he reflected on a schedule that by his | :16:30. | :16:34.
own admission is not sensible. Just think for a moment about what he has | :16:35. | :16:39.
done. 30 Great North Run is on the 40 days. 40 marathons. And a run | :16:40. | :16:48.
that has now left him unable to walk. Even his supporters tried to | :16:49. | :16:53.
call a halt on his very first challenge. It was on the Great North | :16:54. | :17:05.
Run. I was trying to pull him out. It was raining, he was wearing | :17:06. | :17:09.
trainers that help you get on the front foot. So far Tony has raised | :17:10. | :17:20.
?90,000 for charity. But why does he put himself through such punishment. | :17:21. | :17:31.
It was about a burden, the people that I have lost to cancer. I felt | :17:32. | :17:44.
that burden, I still do. Tony has learned but whatever the problem, it | :17:45. | :17:48.
was not his back. Is this the end? And you can see that exclusive | :17:49. | :17:51.
report on Inside Out tonight at 7.30 here on BBC One. Now, though ` it's | :17:52. | :18:00.
time for Team Talk. Always plenty to talk about, after a North East | :18:01. | :18:04.
derby. And while Sunderland fans are no doubt still celebrating, they | :18:05. | :18:07.
should really see it as just a start? Yes ` their first win of the | :18:08. | :18:13.
season, against their biggest rivals, they'll obviously enjoy | :18:14. | :18:16.
that. But even more importantly, it lifted them off the bottom of the | :18:17. | :18:21.
Premier League table. And if they can take something from next week's | :18:22. | :18:25.
trip to Hull ` and their old boss Steve Bruce ` they'll have a chance | :18:26. | :18:28.
of catching the rest. A win was long`overdue, wasn't it? | :18:29. | :18:31.
And if they're going to stay up, they'll need to keep Steven Fletcher | :18:32. | :18:41.
fit for the rest of the season. The strikers linked up quite well. They | :18:42. | :18:47.
will need that partnership to work. The truth of it is that Sunderland | :18:48. | :18:52.
simply had to win to stave off relegation fears. They wanted it | :18:53. | :18:58.
more. But it did not look like they would get the second goal until that | :18:59. | :19:02.
substitution was made. Adam Johnson not very happy. And this is the | :19:03. | :19:10.
winner. Was that a free kick? It looked soft. Was the ball moving? I | :19:11. | :19:19.
think it probably was. But not many people complaining. The referee let | :19:20. | :19:24.
them get on with it, and what a finish! Superb! He has now got to be | :19:25. | :19:30.
in the starting line`up for next week. And what about Newcastle? Well | :19:31. | :19:36.
a second successive derby defeat ` and home games against Man City and | :19:37. | :19:40.
Chelsea this week ` certainly cranks up the pressure on manager Alan | :19:41. | :19:43.
Pardew ` although the fact his squad's a bit thin is probably more | :19:44. | :19:47.
down to the Director of Football, Joe Kinnear. He certainly missed his | :19:48. | :19:58.
two key central defenders. Newcastle seemed to be surprised by the temple | :19:59. | :20:02.
that Sunderland started the game at. For all their possession and the | :20:03. | :20:08.
fact that they were on top for large periods of the game, they were | :20:09. | :20:15.
restricted to long`range efforts. Sunderland are generally managed to | :20:16. | :20:21.
keep them at arms length. Eventually, Newcastle got the | :20:22. | :20:25.
equaliser. Obviously enjoyed on the bench. Most people thought there | :20:26. | :20:30.
would only be one winner after that. But they could not find it. | :20:31. | :20:37.
And not a happy camper, the club have banned the local newspapers for | :20:38. | :20:45.
the coverage. But the fans, most of them, unhappy. You cannot lose two | :20:46. | :20:52.
games against Sunderland in a calendar year and keep your job. He | :20:53. | :20:58.
must resign. Not enough heart for me. I disappointed for the | :20:59. | :21:05.
supporters and the team. We deserved win. But we switched off a little | :21:06. | :21:14.
bit, professionalism has cost us. If anybody needed that, we did. A long | :21:15. | :21:24.
time overdue! Off the bottom, that is something. Defeated our biggest | :21:25. | :21:29.
rivals, even bigger. Now we must keep it up. From now on, no excuses. | :21:30. | :21:35.
A fantastic win for Middlesbrough on Friday under caretaker boss Mark | :21:36. | :21:38.
Venus who was in the hot`seat after Tony Mowbray was sacked last Monday. | :21:39. | :21:41.
Venus made six changes to the starting line up and it seemed to | :21:42. | :21:45.
have an immediate impact. In front of almost 22,000 ` their biggest | :21:46. | :21:48.
home crowd of the season ` Middlesbrough pulled out all the | :21:49. | :21:51.
stops. Albert Adomah lobbing former Boro keeper Ross Turnbull for the | :21:52. | :21:54.
opener. The Ghana international headed in his second goal of the | :21:55. | :21:57.
night in a period they totally dominated to send Boro into the | :21:58. | :22:02.
break two up. When the Teessiders had the ball they looked | :22:03. | :22:08.
unstoppable. Kei Kamara tapping in Grant Leadbitter's free kick midway | :22:09. | :22:11.
through the second half. Like watching a completely different side | :22:12. | :22:14.
from the one that lost to Barnsley last weekend. Marvin Emnes did | :22:15. | :22:17.
everything except score ` but from the resulting corner new loan | :22:18. | :22:20.
signing Daniel Ayala headed in Boro's fourth to end an impressive | :22:21. | :22:23.
night at the Riverside and boost Mark Venus' chances of getting the | :22:24. | :22:26.
job full time. Well, before the weekend, Bristol City's last league | :22:27. | :22:29.
win came against Middlesbrough when they were still in the Championship. | :22:30. | :22:33.
And with City now struggling at the bottom of League One Carlisle must | :22:34. | :22:36.
have thought it was three points in the bag when Sean O'Hanlon's bullet | :22:37. | :22:40.
header put them ahead. But a second half hat`trick from Jay | :22:41. | :22:42.
Emmanuel`Thomas and a fabulous goal from Scott Wagstaff ensured City got | :22:43. | :22:45.
their first league victory in 22 games ` Liam Noble's powerful drive | :22:46. | :22:53.
unfortunately just a consolation. In League Two, Hartlepool's five match | :22:54. | :22:57.
winning run came to an end at Scunthorpe. Pool looked the most | :22:58. | :23:03.
likely to make the breakthrough but keeper Sam Slocombe pulled out some | :23:04. | :23:06.
top drawer saves before Sam Winnall capitalised on a defensive slip up | :23:07. | :23:14.
to fire home the winner. And it continues to be a struggle for York | :23:15. | :23:18.
City. Manager Nigel Worthington praised his players for their | :23:19. | :23:21.
fighting spirit but a goal in each half saw third top Fleetwood pick up | :23:22. | :23:29.
their first win in four games. And just before we leave football, we | :23:30. | :23:33.
had to show you this great goal from County Durham's Jordan Nobbs. The | :23:34. | :23:36.
Arsenal and ex`Sunderland midfielder opened the scoring as England made | :23:37. | :23:39.
it three wins out of three in their latest 2015 World Cup qualifier | :23:40. | :23:45.
against Wales. It finished 2`0. In basketball, Newcastle Eagles | :23:46. | :23:53.
suffered their defeat of the season. `` second defeat. The Eagles took | :23:54. | :23:56.
the lead in the third quarter but table topping Worcester Wolves | :23:57. | :23:59.
fought back in the final period to win 80`71. The Eagles are now fourth | :24:00. | :24:02.
in the BBL. And in rugby union Newcastle Falcons | :24:03. | :24:06.
are up to eighth in the Premiership after their first home win of the | :24:07. | :24:10.
season. In difficult conditions at Kingston Park Adam Powell sealed a | :24:11. | :24:14.
try for the Falcons after good work from the forwards to put Newcastle | :24:15. | :24:16.
on level terms. Phil Godman's conversion gave them a narrow lead. | :24:17. | :24:20.
But the game ended in high drama when Shane Geraghty lined up a | :24:21. | :24:24.
penalty to win the match for Irish only for the ball to be blown off | :24:25. | :24:32.
the tee twice. In his panic to take it before time ran out his kick feel | :24:33. | :24:35.
short and the Falcons celebrated their third win of the campaign. The | :24:36. | :24:39.
real nailbiter. Finally, the Rugby League World Cup reaches our region | :24:40. | :24:44.
tomorrow. That's right and I'll be live at Derwent Park in Workington | :24:45. | :24:47.
as Scotland ` seen here training in nearby Whitehaven ` take on Tonga. | :24:48. | :24:52.
It should be a great atmosphere, and to whet the appetite BBC Radio | :24:53. | :24:55.
Cumbria's breakfast show is coming live from Derwent Park with Mike | :24:56. | :25:01.
Zeller from 6.30 tomorrow morning. And now the weather. | :25:02. | :25:08.
It will be quite showery across Cumbria tonight. Here is a photo | :25:09. | :25:15.
showing some of the instability associated with the storm which did | :25:16. | :25:23.
affect our region. Thank you very much to Paul. The headline tomorrow, | :25:24. | :25:30.
