from the west That

:00:00.:00:16.

Hello, welcome to Look North. In the programme tonight.

:00:17.:00:21.

"You know what you did". The message from police to the driver of the car

:00:22.:00:25.

that killed three year old Danny Wake.

:00:26.:00:27.

A tuberculosis scare for parents of babies born at this hospital ` their

:00:28.:00:30.

infants are being recalled for checks.

:00:31.:00:32.

Please don't ignore us. The plea from students at a special college

:00:33.:00:35.

who fear potential employers are ignoring them.

:00:36.:00:36.

And Middlesbrough X`Factor winner James Arthur reveals there's a down

:00:37.:00:40.

side to winning the talent show. In sport ` we're live at the Stadium

:00:41.:00:44.

of Light as Sunderland prepare to take on Southampton in the League

:00:45.:00:45.

Cup. And a couple of crackers from

:00:46.:00:49.

Carlisle on bonfire night hold high flying Wolves to a draw.

:00:50.:00:58.

It's two days since three year old Danny Wake was killed in a hit and

:00:59.:01:04.

run incident. Today, police sent this message to the driver of the

:01:05.:01:07.

car that killed him: "You know what you did." Danny died after he was

:01:08.:01:12.

struck in Darlington. The moments leading up to that collision were

:01:13.:01:17.

filmed on CCTV. A local man had been arrested on suspicion of causing

:01:18.:01:20.

death by dangerous driving. Last night police released him without

:01:21.:01:23.

charge. Our reporter Alison Freeman has been following the story.

:01:24.:01:29.

They were on their way home to start choosing Christmas presents.

:01:30.:01:31.

Three`year`old Danny Wake, seen here in the green jacket, was going to

:01:32.:01:35.

pick out what he wanted from a catalogue they'd collected together

:01:36.:01:38.

in town. Moments later he was hit by a car

:01:39.:01:52.

and died. That is tragic. They will probably not have a Christmas. We

:01:53.:01:59.

need people to come forward and tell us exactly what happened.

:02:00.:02:03.

Danny, his mum, and brother Georgie had walked back from Darlington town

:02:04.:02:07.

centre along Neasham Road. But when they turned into Falmer Road, Danny

:02:08.:02:10.

somehow strayed away from his mother and into the path of the oncoming

:02:11.:02:12.

vehicle. The person driving did not stop.

:02:13.:02:16.

Police have spoken to a vast number of people and are combing hundreds

:02:17.:02:20.

of hours of CCTV footage. But they still want to trace anyone else who

:02:21.:02:23.

saw anything suspicious. In particular passengers on two

:02:24.:02:26.

Arriva buses passing along Neasham Road at the time. I ask those

:02:27.:02:38.

individuals on that bus to come forward and tell us what they saw. I

:02:39.:02:43.

also feel to the person who was driving the vehicle that morning. ``

:02:44.:02:52.

I also appealed to the person. It is important you tell us what happened

:02:53.:02:57.

so the family can understand what happened that morning. Officers

:02:58.:03:03.

investigating the crash arrested a 24`year`old local man on Monday

:03:04.:03:07.

afternoon and a car was taken from a nearby street to be examined, hours

:03:08.:03:10.

after the accident. The man cooperated fully and has since been

:03:11.:03:12.

released without charge. Police say they now want people in

:03:13.:03:15.

this close`knit community to think hard about what they saw that day to

:03:16.:03:19.

help find the driver of that vehicle.

:03:20.:03:28.

Alison's with me now. So, from what the police are saying there's no

:03:29.:03:31.

chance the driver did not know what happened?

:03:32.:03:39.

At a press conference they said the driver would know what happened.

:03:40.:03:43.

They did say it was an accident but said he should come forward. The

:03:44.:03:57.

crash happened on Monday morning. Durham police seek every piece of

:03:58.:03:59.

information could prove vital. 41 babies, who were treated in a

:04:00.:04:08.

Sunderland hospital neo`natal unit, have been called back to be tested

:04:09.:04:13.

for tuberculosis. The infants were in the Sunderland Royal Hospital

:04:14.:04:16.

unit between May one and August seven this year. Dedicated clinics

:04:17.:04:23.

have been set up for the babies to be assessed and tests will be

:04:24.:04:26.

carried out next week. Obviously a great concern for the

:04:27.:04:29.

parents of those babies. Earlier, the Health Trust's Medical Director,

:04:30.:04:33.

Ian Martin joined me in the studio. I asked him how rare an incident

:04:34.:04:39.

like this is. It is a rare condition. On average

:04:40.:04:47.

in Sunderland we get 12 admissions per year. It is not common. It is

:04:48.:04:55.

not easy to pass that infection on either. If anybody did get it the

:04:56.:05:04.

treatment is simple. It is antibiotics for a few weeks.

:05:05.:05:14.

Babies are vulnerable. There are age makes them vulnerable parents are

:05:15.:05:27.

concerned. We have put in place a helpline. There are a dedicated team

:05:28.:05:33.

of professionals to answer questions. They have all been

:05:34.:05:37.

offered an appointment with a consultant if they want to talk

:05:38.:05:41.

about it in more detail. We understand their concern. We are

:05:42.:05:45.

sorry it has happened to them. It is one of those things. There is

:05:46.:05:50.

nothing that could have been done to prevent it. I fully understand they

:05:51.:05:59.

will be concerned. The chance of any baby being infected is remote. If

:06:00.:06:04.

that happens to cover the treatment is simple. We do not expect any baby

:06:05.:06:13.

to come to harm as a consequence. As Mr Martin said, the Trust has set

:06:14.:06:16.

up a helpline for concerned parents to call. It's open between 8am and

:06:17.:06:27.

8pm daily on 07810 637 810. People in a County Durham village

:06:28.:06:30.

say closing their local school would rip the heart out of their

:06:31.:06:36.

community. Durham County Council's considering shutting Roseberry

:06:37.:06:38.

College and Sixth Form in Pelton near Chester`le`Street because of

:06:39.:06:41.

low pupil numbers. But campaigners say even though some students could

:06:42.:06:44.

be transferred to a brand new academy, children's education will

:06:45.:06:47.

be damaged in the upheaval. Here's our Political Correspondent Mark

:06:48.:06:54.

Denten. I geography lesson. Today's topic is

:06:55.:07:04.

the birth rate. That is rather at because Durham County Council says

:07:05.:07:07.

they are closing the school because animal birth rate has left it with

:07:08.:07:16.

low pupil numbers. `` because a low birth rate. It is the beating heart

:07:17.:07:29.

of the community. Generations have been educated here. That is why this

:07:30.:07:39.

school is festooned with protest banners. The concern is that the

:07:40.:07:44.

school is shut people will end up the miles up the road.

:07:45.:07:52.

While Durham County Council has not said where the children would go of

:07:53.:07:54.

that school close, parents are convinced they would end up here.

:07:55.:08:02.

Parents are worried that the upheaval could damage the education

:08:03.:08:10.

of their children. At the moment we live two minutes away from the

:08:11.:08:16.

school. But the other school might be to bus journeys away.

:08:17.:08:22.

Durham County Council emphasises that no decisions have been made

:08:23.:08:25.

yet, but with a significantly falling roll the school's

:08:26.:08:28.

sustainability has to be questioned. Mark Denten, BBC Look North, Pelton,

:08:29.:08:31.

County Durham. It was a reasonably busy bonfire

:08:32.:08:34.

night for fire crews across the North East and Cumbria. Thousands of

:08:35.:08:38.

people chose to go to organised displays like this one in Stockton

:08:39.:08:43.

last night. But one brigade, the Tyne and Wear Fire service, attended

:08:44.:08:46.

more than 400 incidents ` mainly bonfires. The crew of Blue Watch at

:08:47.:08:52.

Byker Fire Station in Newcastle got called to a range of incidents.

:08:53.:08:57.

It's a dilemma facing many councils. Charges for car parking bring in

:08:58.:09:01.

much needed revenue ` but do they drive shoppers away which could then

:09:02.:09:04.

lead to shop closures and ultimately the loss of business rates? In

:09:05.:09:07.

Middlesbrough you can now park for free for the first two hours. But in

:09:08.:09:11.

Cumbria shop owners are angry over consultation plans to abolish some

:09:12.:09:14.

free parking zones and introduce charges.

:09:15.:09:21.

Traders are warning it could force them out of business.

:09:22.:09:23.

The County Council has to make savings of ?24 million, but it says

:09:24.:09:27.

this idea is just at the consultation stage. Graham Moss has

:09:28.:09:30.

been to two West Cumbrian towns where feelings are running high.

:09:31.:09:37.

The town centre has recovered from the floods of four years ago.

:09:38.:09:41.

Neither is a new threat to their livelihood. Car parking is one of

:09:42.:09:47.

the principal reasons that high streets decline. For the County

:09:48.:09:53.

Council to proposed a scheme whereby they will charge for parking on the

:09:54.:09:56.

streets of our market towns is the most stupid idea I have heard in

:09:57.:09:59.

ages. It is a broadly similar arrangement

:10:00.:10:08.

here. Display one of these desks and that gives you 30 minutes free

:10:09.:10:11.

parking. There are concerns that this is going to change. It will

:10:12.:10:17.

have a heavy impact. Shoppers would move away. They would go to where

:10:18.:10:22.

they will get free parking. It would hit shops. I did not come into

:10:23.:10:32.

politics to start charging for people that are traditionally the.

:10:33.:10:42.

But we had to recuperate some of the costs. It is not going to encourage

:10:43.:10:56.

shoppers. I have never been in agreement with paying for parking.

:10:57.:11:08.

The consultation runs until the end of January.

:11:09.:11:11.

In a region with the highest unemployment level in the country

:11:12.:11:14.

finding a job is tough for many. But it's being claimed people with

:11:15.:11:17.

serious vision problems and learning difficulties are facing a two`fold

:11:18.:11:19.

battle. Henshaws College, near Harrogate, caters for people with a

:11:20.:11:23.

wide range of learning and sensory disabilities, and says it's seen a

:11:24.:11:26.

steady decline in offers of work placements and employment. Phil

:11:27.:11:38.

Chapman reports. This man wants to live and

:11:39.:11:45.

meaningful life and work hard. But his gene could be harder to reach

:11:46.:11:52.

than ever. `` his dream could be harder to reach. My dream would be

:11:53.:12:07.

to hold my own `` to own my own restaurant. If people realise what

:12:08.:12:17.

they could do it would open their eyes. This man would like a job

:12:18.:12:38.

sorting mail somewhere. I have seen a decline in the opportunities for

:12:39.:12:52.

our students. But it then affects the employer and our students. It

:12:53.:13:06.

benefits everybody. For the students here the dream is

:13:07.:13:17.

to find a little independence. Saltburn singer and X Factor winner

:13:18.:13:21.

James Arthur says his rapid rise to stardom left him struggling with

:13:22.:13:27.

depression and anxiety. And we will have the full weather

:13:28.:13:43.

forecast later. James Arthur says his rise to

:13:44.:13:47.

stardom left him struggling with depression and anxiety. The

:13:48.:13:51.

25`year`old who's already had a number one and sold more than a

:13:52.:13:55.

million singles, is this evening in Middlesbrough signing copies of his

:13:56.:13:58.

debut album. Our reporter Stuart Whincup joined

:13:59.:14:03.

the crowds. He's gone from being an unemployed

:14:04.:14:06.

musician to one of Britain biggest artists. But James Arthur says he's

:14:07.:14:10.

struggled with his sudden rise to fame. And in the last year has

:14:11.:14:20.

battled anxiety and depression. You constantly feel like you are doing

:14:21.:14:24.

positive things and certain sections of the media want to drag the

:14:25.:14:36.

success story down. We have someone who achieves success and immediately

:14:37.:14:45.

we want to tear them down. His first single Impossible sold

:14:46.:14:48.

more than a million copies. He was nominated for a Brit award and

:14:49.:14:51.

supported Justin Timberlake. But his hightlight of the year, was

:14:52.:15:00.

something closer to home. I performed on the pitch of my beloved

:15:01.:15:09.

team. He admits he was never going to be

:15:10.:15:13.

the shiny pop star who was popular with all. And he says he owes much

:15:14.:15:17.

of his success to the people of Teesside. A lot of people from

:15:18.:15:26.

Middlesbrough probably voted for me to win the X factor. It is important

:15:27.:15:30.

for me to come here to appreciate those people.

:15:31.:15:40.

Not quite fireworks but there was plenty of Bonfire Night

:15:41.:15:42.

entertainment at Brunton Park last night. Carlisle United twice came

:15:43.:15:47.

from behind in League One to earn a well deserved draw against high

:15:48.:15:51.

flying Wolves. After losing three of their last

:15:52.:15:54.

four games Carlisle boss Graham Kavanagh was looking for a response

:15:55.:15:57.

from his players and the bonfire night encounter turned out to be a

:15:58.:16:05.

real cracker. A win for the once mighty Wolves would have seen them

:16:06.:16:08.

move joint top of the League and early on they were on fire as Bakary

:16:09.:16:12.

Sako sent a shot fizzing past Mark Gillespie to take the lead. But the

:16:13.:16:17.

Blues were in no mood to let Kenny Jackett's men have their own way and

:16:18.:16:20.

their new Ghanaian international Prince Buaben scored his first goal

:16:21.:16:24.

for the club with a regal chip to put them back on level terms. But

:16:25.:16:28.

Wanderers went into half time 2`1 up ` Leigh Griffiths' header hitting

:16:29.:16:30.

both posts before somewhat fortuitously going in. Carlisle

:16:31.:16:34.

burned brightest after the break and when Buaben was brought down by Lee

:16:35.:16:38.

Evans in the box. Liam Noble stepped up to send the keeper the wrong way

:16:39.:16:42.

from the spot. Both sides had chances to win it but a point a fair

:16:43.:16:46.

result and the manager delighted to be back on track. We asked a great

:16:47.:16:57.

deal of the group. I am really pleased that they produce that the

:16:58.:17:07.

home fans. To put it a performance like that was special.

:17:08.:17:12.

On the day it was revealed that club legend Niall Quinn is to be awarded

:17:13.:17:16.

the Freedom of the City of Sunderland, another welcome

:17:17.:17:18.

distraction for fans dismayed by their team's start to the season.

:17:19.:17:21.

The Black Cats take on Southampton in the League Cup for the right to

:17:22.:17:25.

host Chelsea in the quarterfinals. Our sports reporter Mark Tulip is

:17:26.:17:28.

already at the Stadium of Light. Definitely some changes tonight

:17:29.:17:31.

Mark? Well three have been forced on new

:17:32.:17:35.

head coach Gus Poyet, Dawn. Both Lee Cattermole and Andrea Dossena begin

:17:36.:17:39.

their three match bans after being sent off in the defeat at Hull last

:17:40.:17:42.

weekend. And Kieron Westwood suffered a neck injury in the same

:17:43.:17:44.

game. I think Poyet would have wanted to

:17:45.:17:48.

freshen things up anyway and he'll have one eye on the daunting league

:17:49.:17:52.

game here against Manchester City. But the Uruguayan knows that victory

:17:53.:17:55.

tonight could restore some of the momentum Sunderland enjoyed briefly

:17:56.:17:57.

after their derby success, although Southampton are playing some great

:17:58.:18:00.

football this season and are sixth in the Premier League. They are a

:18:01.:18:09.

difficult team to beat. They are fit. A former Sunderland goalkeeper

:18:10.:18:33.

is a funeral on the south coast although by his own admission he

:18:34.:18:37.

does not enjoy a happy spell on Wearside. The home fans will be

:18:38.:18:43.

hoping it stays that way tonight. Full commentary on BBC radio

:18:44.:18:47.

Newcastle. Well in 24 hours time, the attention

:18:48.:18:51.

turns from the Stadium of Light to the Sunderland Aquatics Centre next

:18:52.:18:55.

door. It's staging its first international tournament as the

:18:56.:18:58.

Great Britain water polo team continues its quest to qualify for

:18:59.:19:00.

the European Championships in Hungary.

:19:01.:19:08.

The GB men's water`polo team didn't win any matches at London 2012, but

:19:09.:19:12.

this new`look squad has reaped the benefits of the higher profile

:19:13.:19:14.

enjoyed by the sport. Sunderland's also experiencing a higher profile,

:19:15.:19:17.

thanks to its state`of`the`art aquatic centre attracting this four

:19:18.:19:19.

nation qualification tournament, which it's hoped will bring a

:19:20.:19:22.

significant boost to the local economy. This is what the team have

:19:23.:19:29.

been working towards for a lot of years. We are over the moon with it.

:19:30.:19:45.

The aquatics centre is on the map. It helps us show the world what we

:19:46.:19:53.

have as a facility. We have been over the moon with the facilities.

:19:54.:19:57.

It is almost tailor`made for water polo. It is a good atmosphere for

:19:58.:20:03.

the players and the fans. If GB can beat Israel and Moldova

:20:04.:20:07.

ahead of their final match against Russia, that might be good enough to

:20:08.:20:10.

reach the final qualifying round ahead of next July's European

:20:11.:20:17.

Championships in Budapest. The European Championships would be

:20:18.:20:22.

amazing stop. Tickets are still available and the tournament, which

:20:23.:20:25.

begins tomorrow, runs until Sunday. Mark Tulip, BBC Look North,

Time for Sportskids now and this week we meet a youngster from
