Hello. Welcome to Look North. In the programme tonight: Calls for a ban

:00:10.:00:15.

on hands`free phones in cars, after research here suggests they cause

:00:16.:00:20.

drivers to lose concentration. Multitasking at the wheel and doing

:00:21.:00:25.

anything that distracts you from the road is potentially fatal.

:00:26.:00:28.

"Thank you for saving my life." The 13`year`old plucked from a West

:00:29.:00:30.

Cumbrian harbour is reunited with his rescuer.

:00:31.:00:34.

The plot of derelict land that could hold the key to thousands of new

:00:35.:00:40.

jobs. And don't try this at home ` the

:00:41.:00:43.

stunt bike spectacular coming to Tyneside in the new year, hoping to

:00:44.:00:47.

win new fans for the sport of motocross.

:00:48.:00:49.

In sport, the Eagles are flying high as they reach basketball's cup

:00:50.:00:52.

semifinal again, and is the honeymoon over for Carlisle's new

:00:53.:00:55.

boss, as the Cumbrians drop yet more points at home?

:00:56.:01:11.

We know it's against the law and dangerous to drive while holding our

:01:12.:01:15.

mobile phone, but isn't it OK to drive hands`free? Well, not

:01:16.:01:20.

according to scientists at Newcastle University. They say their research

:01:21.:01:23.

shows even using hands`free can seriously reduce our ability to

:01:24.:01:28.

drive safely. The findings coincide with National Road Safety Week, and

:01:29.:01:31.

the charity Brake is now calling for a ban on using hands`free phones in

:01:32.:01:37.

cars. Driving while using a hand`held

:01:38.:01:40.

mobile phone has been illegal in the UK for a decade now. But it isn't

:01:41.:01:46.

against the law to drive while talking hands`free. Researchers,

:01:47.:01:50.

though, have now discovered that using our phones hands`free can

:01:51.:01:53.

significantly reduce our ability to drive safely. Well, I've come down

:01:54.:02:00.

to Newcastle University to find out exactly what they've discovered in

:02:01.:02:05.

the research. They have given me this strap, which is going to go

:02:06.:02:08.

underneath here and monitor my heart rate and breathing. They have also

:02:09.:02:14.

given me a set of goggles with two small cameras, and that's going to

:02:15.:02:17.

monitor my eye movements and see what I am looking at on the road.

:02:18.:02:22.

Whilst at the wheel, the researchers called me. I answered hand`held and

:02:23.:02:27.

hands`free. They asked increasingly complex questions, whilst recording

:02:28.:02:30.

my heart rate, breathing, and driving ability. Overall, their

:02:31.:02:35.

tests show drivers taking calls on hands`free phones saw their ability

:02:36.:02:38.

to maintain speed and their steering performance decline 37%. We can see

:02:39.:02:48.

when people start talking on the phone, they didn't even recognise

:02:49.:02:51.

the hazard they've been through, and they didn't even stop for a stop

:02:52.:02:54.

line, and missed a red traffic light. And even on the hands`free,

:02:55.:02:59.

when they're in a conversation that demands a lot of thinking, they can

:03:00.:03:06.

be incredibly distracted. We're looking at the point where you start

:03:07.:03:09.

answering the phone... We're all getting busier and multitasking

:03:10.:03:12.

more, and mobile phones mean we can be contacted anywhere, at any time.

:03:13.:03:21.

But beware, say the scientists, as their evidence shows that talking to

:03:22.:03:24.

someone on the phone hands`free is more dangerous than talking to a

:03:25.:03:27.

passenger. When you're talking to a passenger, they are context aware.

:03:28.:03:30.

They know what's happening on the road, and they may be quiet when

:03:31.:03:34.

they see you doing a difficult manoeuvre or they may change if they

:03:35.:03:37.

recognise there is danger on the road. When you're talking to someone

:03:38.:03:41.

remotely at the end of the phone, who doesn't know what the driving

:03:42.:03:44.

conditions are, they will continue the conversation, and you will try

:03:45.:03:47.

and maintain it, even though you're getting more dangerous. The research

:03:48.:03:51.

coincides with the start of National Road Safety Week, and the charity

:03:52.:03:54.

Brake has now called for the use of hands`free phones to be banned in

:03:55.:03:56.

cars. Sharon joins me now. Sharon, Brake's

:03:57.:04:07.

stance is certainly uncompromising ` as far as they're concerned phones

:04:08.:04:11.

should be banned completely? But not everyone shares that view? Brake say

:04:12.:04:22.

that the use of mobile phones increases the risk of having

:04:23.:04:24.

accidents, but there are contradictions. Research in

:04:25.:04:27.

Australia claims to show that children in cars causing

:04:28.:04:30.

distractions are twelve times more dangerous than mobile phones. That's

:04:31.:04:32.

something we put to Brake's representative Rich Andrew. I think

:04:33.:04:37.

there is an important message, and we do work closely with educators

:04:38.:04:40.

from nursery schools upwards, to try and get that message out to children

:04:41.:04:44.

as well as to parents and to drivers, about the importance of

:04:45.:04:47.

kind of being sensible and knowing your responsibilities of being in a

:04:48.:04:51.

car, whether as a driver or as a passenger. Brake is using academic

:04:52.:04:57.

research, as we saw. It wasn't carried out in real driving

:04:58.:05:00.

situations ` so is it valid? That's right, more people than ever now use

:05:01.:05:04.

mobile phones, and more and more cars are using hands`free

:05:05.:05:07.

technology. But there's no evidence of an increase in accidents caused

:05:08.:05:10.

by phones, that's something else we put to Brake. What the research

:05:11.:05:18.

shows today, and I think the really important message that has come out

:05:19.:05:22.

of today is that this simulation and the research that backs it up shows

:05:23.:05:25.

that conversation can be a huge distraction, especially if it is a

:05:26.:05:28.

work`related conversation, where you really have to concentrate. It's

:05:29.:05:38.

certainly a contentious subject, and you can join the debate on the Look

:05:39.:05:40.

North Facebook page. A West Cumbrian man who saved a

:05:41.:05:56.

teenager from drowning has told Look North he was just in the right place

:05:57.:06:00.

at the right time. Ryan Lowery's day out fishing at Maryport harbour

:06:01.:06:03.

almost ended in tragedy when he slipped and fell from a pier. He was

:06:04.:06:07.

in the water for almost 20 minutes, before being hauled to safety by

:06:08.:06:10.

Brian Pattinson. Graham Moss reports.

:06:11.:06:13.

Reliving the events of an afternoon that nearly ended in tragedy.

:06:14.:06:17.

13`year`old Ryan Lowery was fishing on the North Pier when he slipped

:06:18.:06:23.

and lost his footing. I tried to grab something, but I kept sliding.

:06:24.:06:30.

When I got into the water, I had a tiny burst of energy to push myself

:06:31.:06:38.

to the sea wall and cling onto it. I had told onto a tiny ledge for about

:06:39.:06:46.

15 minutes until Brian came. Brian Pattinson always carries overall in

:06:47.:06:50.

his car boot just in case. He was on the opposite side of the harbour

:06:51.:06:55.

when he heard someone in the water. I ran along with the rope and tied a

:06:56.:07:00.

knot in it, threw it out over the side, and luckily, Brian was still

:07:01.:07:08.

conscious and could put it over his head and his arms, and I was able to

:07:09.:07:13.

pull him back towards the steps, which are I knew with the local

:07:14.:07:21.

knowledge I had. The police and the close card have praised Brian's

:07:22.:07:25.

quick thinking. They have said if he had not acted in the way he did,

:07:26.:07:27.

things could have been very different. It is terrifying. It was

:07:28.:07:35.

a near death experience. It is horrible. I couldn't stop him from

:07:36.:07:40.

shaking. That was my worry, that he was shaking badly. But obviously, he

:07:41.:07:48.

is here today, and thankfully is OK. I would be dead, it's as simple as

:07:49.:07:52.

that. There is no good way to put it. I was in the right place at the

:07:53.:07:59.

right time, and I had enough time to get to him. Ryan is recovering well,

:08:00.:08:04.

and him and his mother cannot thank Brian enough.

:08:05.:08:12.

A new development in York could create thousands of jobs, according

:08:13.:08:15.

to the city council. ?10 million is to be spent on what is, at the

:08:16.:08:19.

moment, derelict land behind York railway station. And even more jobs

:08:20.:08:22.

are in the offing. 200 fresh posts are being advertised at the new John

:08:23.:08:26.

Lewis store in the city. Dave Edwards reports.

:08:27.:08:30.

At Monk's Cross on the outskirts of York, construction is well underway.

:08:31.:08:34.

In the spring, this building will host one of the biggest names in

:08:35.:08:39.

British retail ` John Lewis. 100 posts have already been filled, and

:08:40.:08:42.

200 more were advertised this morning. The interest in the jobs

:08:43.:08:48.

when we advertised the 100 roles has been fantastic. We had 500 people

:08:49.:08:52.

from the local area wanting to come and join John Lewis, and we're

:08:53.:08:55.

really hoping and expecting a similar number of people apply for

:08:56.:08:58.

the 200 selling and catering roles that we've advertised today.

:08:59.:09:03.

Meanwhile, over in the centre of York, another major announcement.

:09:04.:09:07.

This land behind the railway station has been derelict for years. Plans

:09:08.:09:12.

to develop it and build thousands of homes and offices were put on hold

:09:13.:09:15.

in 2009 at the height of the recession. But today, the City

:09:16.:09:20.

Council has announced it's spending ?10 million on a new bridge to allow

:09:21.:09:25.

access to the site. It says that will kick`start development and help

:09:26.:09:33.

create thousands of jobs. And those jobs will be much`needed here in

:09:34.:09:35.

Yorkshire, where last week's official figures showed unemployment

:09:36.:09:41.

rose by 4000. There are now 248,000 people in the region without a job.

:09:42.:09:46.

It is hoped today's two announcements will help that figure

:09:47.:09:53.

start to fall. Police investigating the mysterious

:09:54.:09:56.

death of a solicitor found stabbed on a footpath can't rule out the

:09:57.:10:00.

possibility he killed himself. It's more than two months since the body

:10:01.:10:04.

of 56`year`old Peter Maine was discovered in Durham, but still

:10:05.:10:07.

there have been no arrests and no weapon has yet been found. Today, a

:10:08.:10:12.

coroner was told nobody saw the incident take place. Our News

:10:13.:10:14.

Correspondent, Peter Harris, reports.

:10:15.:10:18.

Captured on CCTV on a morning run, yet minutes after these pictures

:10:19.:10:24.

were taken, Peter Maine was dead. Stabbed, we do know, but why and by

:10:25.:10:29.

whom remains a mystery. And now, say the police, they can't rule out the

:10:30.:10:32.

possibility he'd inflicted the wounds himself. On the morning of

:10:33.:10:38.

September the first, the solicitor had been running near Maiden Castle

:10:39.:10:42.

in Durham. At 8am, he was found on a path and later died We know he was

:10:43.:10:46.

being investigated over fraud allegations. Durham Police launched

:10:47.:10:50.

a murder`style inquiry But there the trail appears to run cold. We know

:10:51.:10:58.

Peter Maine died of stab wounds, but a pathologist's report was

:10:59.:11:01.

inconclusive as to how exactly those wounds were inflicted. Durham Police

:11:02.:11:06.

say many witnesses have come forward, though there still may be

:11:07.:11:10.

some who have not been contacted, and a further difficulty for the

:11:11.:11:13.

police is that there is no CCTV or witnesses of the moment the wounds

:11:14.:11:20.

were actually inflicted. And so, since nobody saw it and nobody has

:11:21.:11:23.

been arrested, the police say they can't rule out the option that Mr

:11:24.:11:27.

Maine stabbed himself. One further puzzle ` if that theory was true,

:11:28.:11:31.

then what happened to the implement which killed him? It's never been

:11:32.:11:36.

found. Today, the police updated the Durham coroner on the investigation

:11:37.:11:43.

at a pre`inquest review. That was adjourned for further enquiries. All

:11:44.:11:46.

possibilities in this case are open ` but two months on, the death of a

:11:47.:11:50.

runner stabbed at a beauty spot remains a mystery.

:11:51.:12:00.

A man's been given a five`year prison sentence at Newcastle Crown

:12:01.:12:02.

Court today, following a fatal collision in Prudhoe, in

:12:03.:12:05.

Northumberland, last July. David Robinson ` who's 26 and lives in

:12:06.:12:09.

Woodhead Road in the town ` pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous

:12:10.:12:12.

driving, failing to stop and report an accident and two other driving

:12:13.:12:16.

offences. His victim ` 65`year`old Kathleen Heslop ` was crossing a

:12:17.:12:20.

road and was hit by Robinson's car. She died at the scene.

:12:21.:12:24.

Refurbishment work on the Tyne pedestrian and cyclist tunnels was

:12:25.:12:27.

halted temporarily today, after a fire broke out at nearby C Marine

:12:28.:12:31.

Services in Wallsend. Workers were cleared from the area, after the

:12:32.:12:35.

flames took hold in a small factory unit an acetylene cylinder exploded.

:12:36.:12:40.

There were fears other substances on the site could explode.

:12:41.:12:49.

One of Carlisle's main tourist attractions will lose ?250,000 in

:12:50.:12:52.

city council funding from 2015. Despite this, the Tullie House

:12:53.:12:56.

Museum and Art Gallery has drawn up a ?16 million redevelopment plan.

:12:57.:12:58.

It's hoped Lottery funding will cover some of the cost.

:12:59.:13:02.

A seafaring charity has said the crew of a ship detained on Tyneside

:13:03.:13:06.

for health and safety reasons could still be here over Christmas. The

:13:07.:13:09.

Mission to Seafarers in South Shields is visiting the 16`strong

:13:10.:13:12.

crew of the bulk carrier Donald Duckling. They were so poorly fed on

:13:13.:13:18.

the ship's voyage from Las Palmas to Tyneside, they were forced to fish

:13:19.:13:21.

from the vessel, and cook on fires set on deck. Our business

:13:22.:13:27.

correspondent Ian Reeve reports. The ship that could be with us for

:13:28.:13:30.

some time yet. Taiwanese`owned Donald Duckling, detained on the

:13:31.:13:35.

Tyne last week. It'll be here until its owner puts right many safety

:13:36.:13:39.

issues. Its Filipino and Romanian crew are at least getting some

:13:40.:13:44.

comforts. We've given them free phone cards, so that they can make

:13:45.:13:48.

contact at home. And obviously, they've used the internet, so they

:13:49.:13:51.

can get... All of them are wanting to find out what's happening back

:13:52.:13:55.

home, and a lot of them haven't been able to get in touch with their

:13:56.:14:00.

families. This is the gallery itself, the burner. Deep fat

:14:01.:14:04.

fryers... It's thought the ship may even be here until Christmas. We can

:14:05.:14:09.

offer them the use of the galley, because obviously, they want to cook

:14:10.:14:12.

their food their way, and they tend to like spicy food. Not like our

:14:13.:14:16.

traditional Christmas dinners. So, yes, they'll have the use of this,

:14:17.:14:20.

and this place is their home. Well, the ship is currently docked at

:14:21.:14:24.

Whitehead Point on the north bank of the River, but it could be moved

:14:25.:14:27.

offshore while its problems are rectified. But there is a risk in

:14:28.:14:32.

that, in that it could merely sail away. But while she's still here,

:14:33.:14:36.

Mission to Seafarers, such as Geoff and Richard, are able to visit the

:14:37.:14:41.

crew. As soon as you got up the gangway, you could see the rust and

:14:42.:14:46.

scale all over. It hadn't been maintained at all. Not for years, I

:14:47.:14:51.

don't think. The crew, they looked all right. They looked quite happy.

:14:52.:14:55.

The Filipinos are very happy race, anyway. Quite resilient. Quite,

:14:56.:15:02.

erm... Boisterous, in a way. And they may need that resilience. At

:15:03.:15:05.

least one Filipino crew member knows that back home, many miles from

:15:06.:15:09.

North Shields, members of his family are still missing in the aftermath

:15:10.:15:12.

of the typhoon that has so devastated his homeland.

:15:13.:15:21.

Police are becoming increasingly concerned for a man who's been

:15:22.:15:24.

missing from his home in County Durham for a week. Peter Jackson `

:15:25.:15:28.

who's 38, and from Weybourne Lea in Seaham ` hasn't been seen since

:15:29.:15:31.

leaving for work last Monday morning. Officers say it's out of

:15:32.:15:35.

character. They're urging people to contact them if they see him.

:15:36.:15:40.

850 jobs have been safeguarded at the Pirelli tyre plant in Carlisle,

:15:41.:15:44.

after plans to extend it were backed by councillors. The company plans to

:15:45.:15:48.

invest ?2 million in the plant. An extension will house new machinery,

:15:49.:15:51.

giving the firm the capacity to produce more

:15:52.:15:56.

environmentally`sustainable tyres. Lumiere ` the spectacular raft of

:15:57.:15:58.

lighting installations and projections which have been

:15:59.:16:00.

illuminating Durham's buildings and streets ` is over. At least, for

:16:01.:16:05.

another couple of years. Last night saw the end of the four`day

:16:06.:16:08.

festival, which again proved hugely popular and attracted big crowds.

:16:09.:16:12.

Organisers say around 175,000 people turned up and Durham Police say

:16:13.:16:15.

crowd control was much better than last time.

:16:16.:16:21.

Coming up next in tonight's Look North` a sneak preview of a truly

:16:22.:16:24.

spectacular show coming to the region early next year.

:16:25.:16:27.

And give yourselves a slap on the back. Our region helps Children In

:16:28.:16:36.

Need to a record`breaking total. And after a mild weekend, things turned

:16:37.:16:40.

colder. Join me later for the details.

:16:41.:16:49.

A venue more used to holding concerts will be turned into an

:16:50.:16:52.

indoor motor racing track next year. Tonnes of earth will be used to

:16:53.:16:56.

create a dirt bike course when the Arenacross tour comes to the

:16:57.:16:58.

MetroRadio Arena in Newcastle in February. It's hoped the excitement

:16:59.:17:01.

of races and daredevil motorbike stunts will encourage families to

:17:02.:17:04.

become fans of the sports, as Alison Freeman reports.

:17:05.:17:10.

Terrifying to watch, but throwing yourself in the air on a few hundred

:17:11.:17:14.

pounds of speeding metal, isn't apparently as mad as it looks. I

:17:15.:17:23.

like to think I'm pretty calculated. I hate roller coasters is, Juno.

:17:24.:17:30.

Everything we do is very well rehearsed. We are able to do things

:17:31.:17:32.

because we repeat. Dan is one of a number of freestyle

:17:33.:17:45.

motocross riders who'll be entertaining crowds at the O2 Arena

:17:46.:17:52.

in Newcastle in February. `` MetroRadio Arena. It's part of the

:17:53.:17:55.

Arenacross tour, which will also feature indoor dirt bike racing `

:17:56.:17:59.

some competitors are as young as seven. Among them will be Wallsend

:18:00.:18:02.

brothers 10`year`old Buster and Joel, who's 15. Both have been

:18:03.:18:11.

riding since they were toddlers. When you are on the track, what are

:18:12.:18:15.

you thinking about? It's a frightening? You want to think hard,

:18:16.:18:22.

because I always think I have to think one step ahead. You have to

:18:23.:18:26.

think about the cones and think about the next jumps. That's what I

:18:27.:18:34.

do. It makes me a better writer. `` better rider. And transforming the

:18:35.:18:38.

shiny floors of the arena is surprisingly quick. Over a 24`hour

:18:39.:18:41.

period, 560 trucks will carry in 6000 tonnes of dirt to turn the

:18:42.:18:45.

arena into a race track And then there's the 18`ton truck on which

:18:46.:18:48.

they're going to land these heart`stopping jumps. The tour is

:18:49.:18:54.

taking in seven venues, but a win home win for local competitors is a

:18:55.:19:02.

priority. It's really important for my friends and family to come to

:19:03.:19:06.

this one, because I am local. I want them to get the hang me and I will

:19:07.:19:11.

put on a good show and come out with a win. It's hoped the tour will

:19:12.:19:16.

attract new fans to motocross. And if these gravity`defying stunts are

:19:17.:19:19.

anything to go by, it should keep the audience on the edge of their

:19:20.:19:28.

seats. That was amazing! Now, Dawn's here, and she'll have

:19:29.:19:32.

the sports news in a moment. First though, we have to say a big thank

:19:33.:19:36.

you to everybody who took part in this year's BBC Children In Need

:19:37.:19:39.

appeal. Yes, a very big thank you, because yet again, the national

:19:40.:19:43.

appeal has set a new record. And of the ?31 million pledged on the

:19:44.:19:46.

night, almost ?1.4 million came from the North East and Cumbria. The Look

:19:47.:19:50.

North team were out and about in Hexham on Friday night, and more

:19:51.:19:53.

than ?16,000 came from donations at the Outside Broadcast alone. Here's

:19:54.:19:57.

a reminder of the sort of things people got up to.

:19:58.:19:58.

Attention! # I could lift you up. # I could

:19:59.:20:16.

show you what you want to see and take you where you want to

:20:17.:20:18.

# Even if the sky is falling down I know that we'll be safe and sound.

:20:19.:20:28.

# You know my river won't evaporate, this world will still appreciate.

:20:29.:20:42.

# Even in a hurricane I know that we'll be safe and sound.

:20:43.:20:52.

Yes, that was me claiming! I quite enjoyed it when I got to the top. As

:20:53.:21:15.

long as you don't look down! No Premier league or Championship

:21:16.:21:18.

action over the weekend, of course, because of the internationals, but

:21:19.:21:21.

there was plenty of action further down the leagues. Gateshead with

:21:22.:21:24.

probably the result of the weekend, but we start our round`up in League

:21:25.:21:27.

one and a draw for Carlisle United. Young on`loan Man Utd keeper Ben

:21:28.:21:31.

Amos made his debut for the Blues in a much`changed starting line`up at

:21:32.:21:34.

Brunton Park. The game didn't spark into life until the second half `

:21:35.:21:38.

Prince Buaben forcing a save from Phil Jones before Max Ehmer was

:21:39.:21:42.

brought down by Joe Walsh to force a penalty. Liam Noble, back from

:21:43.:21:45.

suspension, thumped the ball in from the spot to give Carlisle the lead.

:21:46.:21:48.

But with just two minutes of normal time left, Billy Clarke broke down

:21:49.:21:52.

the win to fire in the equalizer from 25 yards. Carlisle now six

:21:53.:21:55.

games without a win. We've been a bit of a sticky patch at the moment

:21:56.:21:59.

and the pressure was starting to build. You could sense a little bit

:22:00.:22:03.

of tension around the ground, and when you get one goal up, you think

:22:04.:22:07.

you're going to get the three points. It didn't happen today, and

:22:08.:22:10.

one mistake has cost us. York City will play Crawley in the second

:22:11.:22:14.

round of the FA Cup if they beat Bristol Rovers tomorrow night. On

:22:15.:22:17.

Saturday, though, they had to settle for a draw. Ryan Bowman headed in

:22:18.:22:21.

this cross from Luke O'Neill to put them ahead, the first goal Plymouth

:22:22.:22:24.

have conceded in almost 500 minutes. But substitute Tope Obadeyi levelled

:22:25.:22:27.

the score to make sure the League two strugglers shared the points. It

:22:28.:22:33.

was a disapopinting Friday night for Hartlepool United, who played their

:22:34.:22:36.

third game in six days. A goal in each half secured all three points

:22:37.:22:39.

for Newport County, who move into the League two playoff zone. Former

:22:40.:22:43.

Carlisle keeper Lenny Pidgeley had a great game. The only time he was

:22:44.:22:49.

beaten was by Andy Monkhouse, whose shot hit the post. Gateshead

:22:50.:22:52.

stretched their unbeaten run in the Conference to five matches against

:22:53.:22:55.

Salisbury on Saturday. Josh Walker put them ahead after less than a

:22:56.:22:58.

minute, with a close`range strike. Then, a minute into the second half,

:22:59.:23:01.

James Curtis floated the ball into the path of James Marwood to extend

:23:02.:23:06.

the lead. It looked like it was game over when Walker headed in his

:23:07.:23:09.

second goal and Gateshead's third, and although there was a slightly

:23:10.:23:12.

nervy end to the game when Salisbury came back with two late goals, the

:23:13.:23:16.

result puts Gary Mills side just two points off the playoff places.

:23:17.:23:24.

On to basketball, and a weekend when Glasgow Rocks were reduced to rubble

:23:25.:23:27.

by both our top`flight teams. Durham Wildcats beat them by 85 points to

:23:28.:23:31.

72 in the League on Saturday, before losing to Cheshire Phoenix last

:23:32.:23:33.

night. And after thumping Manchester Giants at Sports Central on Friday,

:23:34.:23:36.

Newcastle Eagles knocked the Scots out of the BBL Cup 48 hours later.

:23:37.:23:40.

The Eagles won their quarterfinal tie 81 points to 69 ` Malik Cooke

:23:41.:23:44.

top`scoring with 27. And there could be a North East derby in the

:23:45.:23:47.

semifinal, with Newcastle up against the winners of next weekend's

:23:48.:23:50.

showdown between the Wildcats and Sheffield Sharks.

:23:51.:23:54.

And in rugby union, Newcastle Falcons' hopes of making it beyond

:23:55.:23:57.

the group stage of the Anglo`Welsh Cup suffered a setback, with a heavy

:23:58.:24:01.

defeat at Gloucester. They went down by 20`3, with the Falcons' only

:24:02.:24:04.

score coming from a Rory Clegg penalty. It's Northampton who now

:24:05.:24:11.

look to qualify for the semi`finals. Thanks, Dawn, Now, just before the

:24:12.:24:13.

weather, congratulations to Teesside actor Mark Benton, who survived the

:24:14.:24:17.

dreaded dance`off for a second week running, to remain in this year's

:24:18.:24:23.

Strictly Come Dancing competition. He was in the bottom two with former

:24:24.:24:26.

Bond girl Fiona Fullerton, but he and partner Iveta Lukosuite received

:24:27.:24:30.

three votes to one to stay in the competition. Mark told Look North he

:24:31.:24:34.

never dreamed he'd make it this far and said he was absolutely amazed by

:24:35.:24:38.

the support he's received from the public. Well done, Mark! What a

:24:39.:24:48.

fabulous outfit, nothing compared to this man!

:24:49.:24:54.

I had to cover up, because people were having to adjust the contrast,

:24:55.:24:56.

because my legs were having to adjust the contrast,

:24:57.:25:02.

because were quite! The weather has been nice and mild recently, but

:25:03.:25:07.

it's all change, as we head through the coming week. Things will be

:25:08.:25:12.

noticeably colder. Don't believe everything you believe in the

:25:13.:25:15.

papers, I don't think it will be completely snowy, but it will be

:25:16.:25:21.

noticeably colder. This weather front will bring in cold air, and

:25:22.:25:28.

introduce a fresher sense for it this evening. Overnight it will

:25:29.:25:34.

mostly be dry, then maybe the odd shower on the coasts, but most

:25:35.:25:39.

places will be dry with long clear spells and a bit of shelter.

:25:40.:25:45.

Temperatures easily sub zero, down to about minus two Celsius. There

:25:46.:25:52.

will be ice patches to watch out for to enter tomorrow morning, so frosty

:25:53.:25:57.

start for most of us, but again, most places will stay dry and fame,

:25:58.:26:04.

with the odd wintry shower. Most places will have blue skies, and it

:26:05.:26:08.

will never feel warm, because the sun is weak, but we will have by the

:26:09.:26:18.

end of the day, some cloud in the north`west, and some rain and sleet

:26:19.:26:22.

and snow in Scotland. That heads are we tomorrow night and into

:26:23.:26:26.

Wednesday. It comes from this weather system from the North, and

:26:27.:26:33.

brings out mixture of snow `` a mixture of snow and sleet. It will

:26:34.:26:41.

quite indent by Friday when the high`pressure tries to build, so if

:26:42.:26:45.

you are writing about the next few days, Cumbria will see the rain

:26:46.:26:49.

clear on Wednesday, and it will stay mostly died on Wednesday and

:26:50.:26:53.

Thursday, but temperatures will only recover a little bit. The north`east

:26:54.:27:00.

again will see more showers on Thursday, with the north`easterly

:27:01.:27:07.

wind coming in, cold north`easterly wind making it colder than number

:27:08.:27:15.

suggest. `` than the numbers suggest.

:27:16.:27:17.

seriously reduce our ability to drive safely.
